Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom has expanded his football investments by acquiring a 19.1% stake in Australian club Melbourne Victory.
Bloom, who also owns a share in Belgian team Union Saint-Gilloise, now has interests in three football clubs. His investment in Melbourne Victory could increase over time.
Since becoming Brighton’s chairman in 2009, Bloom has played a key role in the club’s rise to the Premier League, earning a reputation for using data and analytics to build a strong team. Reports suggest he may also be considering investing in Scottish club Hearts.
The 54-year-old, known for his success in sports betting and professional poker, attended the recent Christmas Derby between Melbourne Victory and their rivals, Melbourne City. His wife, Linda, is from Melbourne, and the family visits Australia frequently.
“As a passionate football supporter, I am excited to have the opportunity to become a shareholder in Melbourne Victory, one of the most successful clubs in A-League history,” Bloom said in a statement.
“My investment reflects my confidence in the club’s vision and leadership, and I see tremendous potential in the club for further growth and success, both on and off the pitch.
“My wife is from Australia and, whenever possible, the two of us and our children enjoy spending time there each year. I am especially delighted that we now have a ‘home club’ in Australia to support.
“The club’s leadership know that I am available to them whenever needed to help in driving continued progress and success for Melbourne Victory.”
Bloom’s investment comes just a week after Melbourne Victory cut its final ties with 777 Partners, a failed investment firm that once considered buying Everton. The club announced that it had reached a deal with creditors A-Cap to fully separate from the 19.9% stake that 777 Partners previously held.
