  • Pep Guardiola hails Brighton as one of the top clubs in football ahead of clash

Pep Guardiola hails Brighton as one of the top clubs in football ahead of clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts ahead of their upcoming match against Brighton this weekend.

Following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last game, Guardiola is eager for his team to return to winning ways. Meanwhile, Brighton is in great form, having won their last six matches.

Speaking at a press conference, the Spanish coach praised Brighton for their smart approach to signing players and managers, as well as their impressive style of play. A victory in this match could help City climb into the top four.

“I think Brighton are one of the best clubs working on and off the pitch,” said Guardiola.

“I think they started with Graham Potter, they made a step forward again under Roberto De Zerbi, and now with this exceptional young manager who’s doing incredibly good things.

“It’s not a surprise I’d say, because they’re doing really, really well in the transfer market and the way they play.

“They’re absolutely one of the toughest opponents and in the past there are many teams who were in the middle positions or bottom or whatever, but they make an incredible step up in terms of organisation and consistency for many, many years, that’s the reality.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJQWKFoL1u8

“It’s not a secret what they’ve been doing. They’re in this position because they’re doing good things, they deserve to be (where they are) in the table.”

He next spoke about the rise of Brighton and other teams from the middle of the league who are challenging for European spots this season. Guardiola named five sides who he thinks could rival City until the end of the season.

“And Bournemouth, and Aston Villa, and Newcastle, and maybe Fulham. Fantastic teams,” he said. “Not a surprise. I had the feeling that they deserve it. They are really good, consistent, they have incredible weapons in the way they play.

Guardiola has admitted that he is not upset about Manchester City’s elimination from the Champions League after their defeat to Real Madrid. He acknowledged that his team is no longer in the competition and has accepted the outcome.

He also shared his thoughts on Atletico Madrid’s controversial exit, where Julian Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out because he made two touches before the ball went in.

“It doesn’t hurt. I don’t have any disappointment. We don’t deserve to be there,” he said. “I Enjoy football for the fantastic games. I am just a spectator to learn and enjoy. I don’t have any feeling that it’s a pity to be out.

“There are incredible teams like Atletico, Liverpool who are out. This competition, what happened with Julian (Alvarez) and Atletico – the margins. Can you imagine you are out of the Champions League for that reason? Atletico were brilliant with the style they played against Madrid but look at that and seasons being good or bad are judged on that.

  • Brighton chairman Tony Bloom acquires shares in Melbourne Victory

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom acquires shares in Melbourne Victory

Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom has expanded his football investments by acquiring a 19.1% stake in Australian club Melbourne Victory.

Bloom, who also owns a share in Belgian team Union Saint-Gilloise, now has interests in three football clubs. His investment in Melbourne Victory could increase over time.

Since becoming Brighton’s chairman in 2009, Bloom has played a key role in the club’s rise to the Premier League, earning a reputation for using data and analytics to build a strong team. Reports suggest he may also be considering investing in Scottish club Hearts.

The 54-year-old, known for his success in sports betting and professional poker, attended the recent Christmas Derby between Melbourne Victory and their rivals, Melbourne City. His wife, Linda, is from Melbourne, and the family visits Australia frequently.

“As a passionate football supporter, I am excited to have the opportunity to become a shareholder in Melbourne Victory, one of the most successful clubs in A-League history,” Bloom said in a statement.

“My investment reflects my confidence in the club’s vision and leadership, and I see tremendous potential in the club for further growth and success, both on and off the pitch.

“My wife is from Australia and, whenever possible, the two of us and our children enjoy spending time there each year. I am especially delighted that we now have a ‘home club’ in Australia to support.
“The club’s leadership know that I am available to them whenever needed to help in driving continued progress and success for Melbourne Victory.”

Bloom’s investment comes just a week after Melbourne Victory cut its final ties with 777 Partners, a failed investment firm that once considered buying Everton. The club announced that it had reached a deal with creditors A-Cap to fully separate from the 19.9% stake that 777 Partners previously held.

  • Chelsea come from behind to beat Brighton thanks to Cole Palmer

Chelsea come from behind to beat Brighton thanks to Cole Palmer

Chelsea climbed to third in the Premier League table after coming from behind to beat Brighton 6-2, with Cole Palmer making history by becoming the first player to score four first-half goals in a Premier League game.

In an exhilarating match at Stamford Bridge, Palmer, 22, was the star of the show. The young forward also hit the post and had a goal ruled out for offside before delivering a stunning individual display. Brighton, despite scoring twice early on, were undone by their high defensive line, which Chelsea’s rapid attack exploited.

Brighton’s goals came from errors by Chelsea’s former Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but Chelsea quickly regained control. After Georginio Rutter’s header put the visitors in front, Palmer equalized with a clinical finish from Nicolas Jackson’s pass.

Palmer, after narrowly missing out on two earlier chances, converted a penalty for his 10th consecutive successful spot-kick after Jadon Sancho was fouled in the box. He then completed a hat-trick in just 10 minutes with a brilliant 25-yard free kick into the top corner.

Palmer’s fourth goal, fired in from a Sancho pass, came shortly after Brighton had briefly reduced the deficit when Carlos Baleba capitalized on another Sanchez error. “Chelsea were superb going forward,” but Brighton’s refusal to adjust their tactics left them vulnerable, as young manager Fabian Hurzeler suffered his first defeat.

The second half was quieter, and Palmer missed an opportunity to add a fifth goal, firing wide late on. Nonetheless, Chelsea’s dominant performance secured a crucial victory, adding to their impressive recent form after thrashing Wolves last month.

  • Ian Wright slams Partey after draw against Brighton

Ian Wright slams Partey after draw against Brighton

Arsenal legend Ian Wright expressed his disappointment with Thomas Partey’s performance during the Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Wright was especially critical of Partey for not tracking a Brighton player in the buildup to their equaliser.

He argued that if Partey had followed the player more closely, he could have been in position to clear the rebound after David Raya’s initial save.

“When you look at the play, you look at Thomas Partey. He’s literally run past him,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“Thomas Partey has to recognise in that instant he has to go all the way with Pedro and at least make a challenge. Pedro blasts past him and he’s just kind of jogging back.

“Those are the things that, when you look back at that, you will say, well, that could have been avoided.”

Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2024/2025 Premier League season was halted after a 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

The Gunners took the lead in the first half when German forward Kai Havertz expertly lobbed the ball over the Brighton goalkeeper.

However, the match took a turn early in the second half when Declan Rice received a red card, forcing Arsenal to play defensively for much of the remaining time.

Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage and eventually found the equaliser through winger Joao Pedro.

  • “Mudryk is not okay” – Pochettino

“Mudryk is not okay” – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Mykhailo Mudryk “is not okay” after the Chelsea star was substituted due to a concussion during their match against Brighton.

Chelsea secured a 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku.

However, the triumph was marred by an injury to Ukrainian winger Mudryk just before halftime and a red card for captain Reece James with only two minutes left in regulation time.

Mudryk’s night ended early following a clash with Tariq Lamptey.

Despite receiving initial medical attention, he was unable to continue, and Chelsea used a concussion substitute to bring in Nkunku.

The concussion substitution rule allows both teams an extra substitution under these circumstances after consulting with the match referee and the club’s medical staff.

The rule also mandates a seven-day cooling-off period for the affected player, meaning Mudryk will miss the final Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.

In his post-match press conference, Pochettino confirmed Mudryk’s condition, stating that the player was not in good shape.

Pochettino stated: “No, he is not OK, we are checking. He was a little bit dizzy but we used the concussion substitution and the rule is seven days, so he is not going to be available for the next game, but I hope it is nothing wrong.”

Chelsea need just a single point from their final match of the season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge to secure European football for next season.

This marks an impressive turnaround for the Blues, who have won four league games in a row after a dismal start to the season.

  • This Reece James tackle landed him a straight red card in Chelsea-Brighton clash

This Reece James tackle landed him a straight red card in Chelsea-Brighton clash

Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, who has been grappling with injuries throughout the season, made headlines by setting a somewhat bizarre record when he was shown a red card in the match against Brighton on Wednesday.

James, who has struggled with hamstring issues, limiting him to only 10 Premier League appearances this season, entered the game as a substitute against Brighton.

However, his return to the pitch was short-lived as he was sent off for kicking out at striker Joao Pedro following a foul. The referee promptly brandished a straight red card after a VAR review.

With this red card, James now shares the distinction of having the most red cards in the Premier League this season.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that he has played only 422 minutes, equivalent to less than five full games.

Two other players, Yves Bissouma of Tottenham and Oli McBurnie of Sheffield United, have also received two red cards each this season.

Additionally, James is not the sole Chelsea player to be sent off; Conor Gallagher and Malo Gusto have also been shown red cards.

As a consequence of his suspension, James will miss Chelsea’s final game of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the possibility of the ban extending into the next season.

Currently placed sixth in the league, Chelsea could climb to fifth if they defeat Bournemouth, but this depends on Sheffield United defeating Ange Postecoglou’s side.

  • Chelsea beat Brighton to boost their European qualification hopes

Chelsea beat Brighton to boost their European qualification hopes

Cole Palmer’s impressive season with Chelsea continued as his goal helped secure a crucial win against Brighton in the Premier League, boosting their hopes for European qualification.

Palmer scored his 22nd league goal of the season, heading in Marc Cucurella’s cross in the 34th minute to put Chelsea ahead. The visitors doubled their lead in the second half when Christopher Nkunku calmly finished Malo Gusto’s assist.

Despite their dominance, Chelsea faced a setback when Reece James, making only his second appearance in 2024 after returning from injury, was sent off for a kick on Joao Pedro, giving Brighton a chance to get back into the game.

In the 97th minute, Danny Welbeck scored for Brighton, tapping in a Pedro cross to reduce the deficit. However, Chelsea held on for the win.

With this victory, Chelsea moved up to sixth in the table, securing a Europa League spot. They will ensure European qualification next season with a draw against Bournemouth on the final day.

Brighton, on the other hand, suffered their seventh defeat in nine matches but remain in 10th place in the league standings.

  • Man City mauls Brighton in 4-0 win in the race for the Premier League title

Man City mauls Brighton in 4-0 win in the race for the Premier League title

Manchester City secured another significant victory in their pursuit of a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Phil Foden, enjoying his best scoring season yet, netted twice in a dominant 4-0 win over Brighton on Thursday.

Foden’s brace in the first half was complemented by goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Julián Álvarez, as City stretched their unbeaten league run to 18 games.

The win narrowed the gap to league leaders Arsenal to just one point.

“I don’t know if it was statement, obviously every game is a lot of pressure but the only thing we can do is try to perform as well as we did today,” De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

With five games remaining, Manchester City, holding one more than Arsenal, are displaying unwavering form as they approach the final stretch of the season.

Their upcoming fixtures include trips to Nottingham Forest, Fulham, and Tottenham, along with home matches against Wolverhampton and West Ham.

Securing victories in all five encounters would crown City as champions once more, a feat unprecedented in English soccer history.

Since their goalless draw with Arsenal on March 31, City have been on a rampant winning streak, triumphing in four consecutive league matches and netting an impressive 17 goals along the way.

Despite the absence of injured Erling Haaland, who shares the league’s top scorer title with 20 goals, City maintained their momentum, allowing Phil Foden to potentially enter the race for the Golden Boot.

Foden, with 16 league goals this campaign and 24 in 48 appearances across all competitions, delivered yet another clinical performance in front of England coach Gareth Southgate at Amex Stadium, a mere seven weeks before the commencement of the European Championship.

City took the lead in the 17th minute courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne’s diving header from Kyle Walker’s right-wing cross. Foden doubled the advantage in the 26th minute, his free-kick shot deflecting off Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross and finding the back of the net.

“It doesn’t happen too much, does it? I think the only way I could reach it was jumping to the ball, and it goes in like a little lob, but it’s obviously not something I’m really good at,” De Bruyne said after netting his first headed goal in the Premier League.

Foden added a third in the 34th by curling home a low finish from just inside the area after Brighton lost possession attempting to play out from the back.

Alvarez, starting up front in place of Haaland, slotted in for 4-0 in the 62nd after Walker was given space to roam down the right wing and cut inside before sliding in to challenge goalkeeper Jason Steele and get the ball across to the Argentina striker.

  • Haaland to miss Man City-Brighton trip due to injury

Haaland to miss Man City-Brighton trip due to injury

Manchester City will be without striker Erling Haaland for their upcoming match against Brighton on Thursday, as he continues to recover from injury.

Erling Haaland is set to receive his award at the FWA Footballer of the Year 75th anniversary dinner in London on May 25

Haaland’s absence follows his injury during the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid, which also caused him to miss the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that Haaland remains unavailable for the upcoming fixture at the Amex Stadium.

“Erling is not ready for tomorrow, the other two, they are ready,” Guardiola told reporters on Wednesday. “I know it is not a big issue, but he is not allowed for this game.”

  • Ansu Fati needs to do better – Brighton’s coach De Zerbi

Ansu Fati needs to do better – Brighton’s coach De Zerbi

Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi has emphasised the need for more from Ansu Fati as the forward enters the latter part of his season-long loan from LaLiga outfit Barcelona.

Ansu, 21, arrived in Brighton amid considerable excitement at the beginning of the season but has faced challenges meeting expectations in the English league.

The Spanish international endured a two-month injury spell earlier in the year, restricting him to just 23 appearances across all competitions, with 14 of those outings coming off the bench.

“Ansu is a sensitive guy, he’s a good player,” De Zerbi said in a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s game against Brentford.

“The expectations from him are always very high. And he has to understand and accept the expectations. The first part of his career has been very tough to accept and understand [with injuries].

“But for the great players, the more important [thing] is to adapt to the expectations. We are helping him. He has to give something more because that’s not enough what he’s doing.

“But he’s a good guy. When you work with good guys, you are happy if you can help them and for him it’s the same.”

Ansu was handed the No. 10 shirt at Barça after Lionel Messi’s departure in 2021 but a string of injuries put the brakes on his career at the Catalan club.

He joined Brighton at the start of the season in search of regular football and scored four goals in his first 14 outings for the club before getting injured at the end of November.

Since returning in February, he has failed to score in nine appearances and was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Brighton can climb to seventh in the Premier League with a win at Brentford on Wednesday as they target qualification for Europe for the second consecutive season.

  • Brighton announces a $154 million profit for 2022/2023 season

Brighton announces a $154 million profit for 2022/2023 season

Premier League club, Brighton, announced a remarkable after-tax profit of £122.8 million ($154.4 million) for the 2022-23 season.

This substantial increase from the previous year’s profit of £24.1 million ($30.3 million) was attributed to the sale of key players like Alexis Mac Allister, Yves Bissouma, and Marc Cucurella, as well as compensation received for former manager Graham Potter, who joined Chelsea in September 2022.

It’s worth noting that the reported figures do not include significant transfers such as Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez, as their moves to Chelsea were finalised after the reporting period.

Caicedo’s transfer fetched up to $146 million, while Sanchez’s transfer reportedly brought in $32 million.

Furthermore, Brighton’s financial success was bolstered by their achievement of their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing sixth place, and reaching the semifinals of the FA Cup.

“We now have a very solid platform to continue to make significant progress on the pitch, by investing in our squad,” Brighton deputy chairman and chief executive Paul Barber said.

Brighton reported a record turnover of £204.5 million ($257 million), indicating significant financial growth for the club.

However, this success has attracted attention to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is being considered for several high-profile coaching positions expected to become available this summer.

Vacancies at top clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Liverpool, where Thomas Tuchel, Xavi Hernandez, and Jurgen Klopp are set to depart, have been linked to De Zerbi.

Despite the speculation, De Zerbi stated last week that he intends to hold discussions with Brighton’s owners before making any decisions about his future.

“It’s [future] not a problem, it’s a part of my work. At the moment, I want to be focused and to keep my eyes on the target we have. I have the contract at the moment. The focus is on the pitch,” he said.

“I’m very relaxed. The problems are the injured players and the preparations for the next game. These are the problems not the contract or my future.”

De Zerbi’s contract with Brighton expires in 2026.

Two Brighton fans receiving medical treatment in Rome after being stabbed

Two Brighton supporters are hospitalised in Rome after being stabbed on the eve of their team’s Europa League match against AS Roma.

Reports from Italian media indicate that a restaurant employee alerted police shortly after midnight on Wednesday, reporting that two fans had entered seeking assistance after being stabbed nearby.

One of the fans sustained three wounds to his left thigh, while the other was stabbed in the right thigh.

Additionally, they reportedly had a backpack stolen, containing a wallet and documents.

The injured fans, aged 28 and 29, were transported to different hospitals in Rome for treatment.

AS Roma is set to host Brighton in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.

  • Brighton sign 19-year-old left-back Valentin Barco

Brighton sign 19-year-old left-back Valentin Barco

Brighton & Hove Albion has signed 19-year-old left-back Valentin Barco from Boca Juniors on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Barco, who made 35 appearances for Boca Juniors, played a key role in helping the team reach the Copa Libertadores final last season.

He is also an Argentina Under-23s international. The addition of Barco strengthens Brighton’s squad with a talented young player, adding to their contingent of South American players, including Pervis Estupinan from Ecuador and Joao Pedro from Brazil.

Brighton technical director David Weir said: “We have been aware of Valentin for a long time and have been impressed with the progress he has made at domestic and international level.

“We’re delighted to welcome him to the club and we are looking forward to seeing how he progresses and develops under Roberto [De Zerbi].

“He has played predominantly on the left side, as a full-back, wing-back or winger but also shown his versatility with Boca, playing across the midfield.

“He is an exciting prospect but it’s also important we give him the time as he needs to settle and adapt to new surroundings and the Premier League.”

Valentin Barco is the first new addition to Brighton & Hove Albion’s squad in January. The left-back has joined the Seagulls from Boca Juniors on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

This signing reflects Brighton’s ongoing strategy of recruiting talent from South America.

The club has previously enjoyed success with players like Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo, who were acquired from South American clubs and later sold for substantial profits.

Barco’s arrival adds depth to Brighton’s squad as they prepare for a busy period following the winter break, with upcoming league and cup fixtures.

  • ‘Kuduless’ West Ham draw with Brighton

‘Kuduless’ West Ham draw with Brighton

The clash between West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion concluded with a scoreless deadlock.

The Hammers hosted the Round 20 match in the ongoing English Premier League campaign at the London Stadium on January 2, 2024.

Mohammed Kudus was absent from West Ham United’s matchday squad as he had been released to join Ghana in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In Kudus’ absence, West Ham felt the void of his skills but managed to field an equally competent replacement.

Despite both teams creating numerous opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, neither side could find the back of the net, resulting in a goalless draw.

At 23 years old, Mohammed Kudus is anticipated to miss a minimum of three West Ham matches while representing Ghana in the 2023 AFCON.

If the Black Stars progress to the AFCON final, the prominent forward may be absent for additional games.

Chris Hughton declines West Ham’s request for Kudus to play Brighton game

Ghana’s national team head coach, Chris Hughton, reportedly turned down a request from West Ham for Mohammed Kudus to join the Black Stars after their game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to the gathered reports, the coach declined the request to avoid risking injury to his key player.

In compliance with FIFA regulations, players are to be released on New Year’s Day for travel to training camps beginning on January 2, ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Consequently, Mohammed Kudus will be unavailable for selection in West Ham United’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday, January 1.

The Black Stars forward is expected to travel to Ghana to join the national team’s camp, initiating preparations for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The camp will open in the afternoon, following an announcement of the final AFCON squad by Ghana’s head coach, Chris Hughton, during a morning press conference in Ivory Coast.

Brighton put four past slow Tottenham

Tottenham’s bid for a Premier League comeback was abruptly halted as injury-plagued Brighton secured a resounding 4-2 victory, featuring two Joao Pedro penalties and a spectacular strike from Pervis Estupinan.

Spurs, aiming for a fourth consecutive top-flight win to reclaim fourth place from Manchester City, faltered against Brighton’s offensive onslaught.

Despite late goals from Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies, Tottenham faced the possibility of a more significant defeat, with Brighton hitting the woodwork twice and having a Facundo Buonanotte effort disallowed.

This loss raises doubts about Tottenham’s Champions League qualification aspirations under manager Ange Postecoglou.

Danny Welbeck’s late header secured a 1-1 draw for Brighton against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Jordan Ayew opened the scoring for Palace just before halftime, capitalizing on a mistake by Seagulls goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

The first half was largely uneventful, with few scoring opportunities.

Eberechi Eze made a second-half return from injury and had chances to extend Palace’s lead, but Brighton dominated the late stages.

The draw marked the fifth consecutive 1-1 result between the rivals at Selhurst Park. Overall, the match featured little excitement in the early stages, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Verbruggen’s mistake led to Ayew’s goal, but Brighton responded in the second half. Welbeck, introduced as a substitute, headed home the equalizer late in the game.

Despite opportunities for both teams, the match ended in a draw, with Palace still searching for a second league victory at home.

  • If injured Tariq Lamptey is not playing for Brighton, how can he play for Ghana – Brighton boss

If injured Tariq Lamptey is not playing for Brighton, how can he play for Ghana – Brighton boss

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi has questioned the inclusion of Tariq Lamptey in Ghana’s 55-man provisional AFCON squad.

Lamptey is currently recovering from an injury sustained in Brighton’s game against Nottingham Forest. In November, Roberto de Zerbi had mentioned that Lamptey would be out for an extended period due to his latest injury.

“We have lost Ansu for a long time. Same for Lamptey, they will be out for long time,” he said.

But Chris Hughton has unveiled a 55-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with notable inclusions such as Thomas Partey, Tariq Lamptey, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, despite ongoing injury concerns.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the list on December 20, just 24 days before the tournament kicks off.

Reacting to this, Roberto wondered if Hughton was up to speed on the current status of Tariq Lamptey.

“Maybe the coach of Ghana doesn’t watch the Premier League because I don’t know how much time we have playing without Tariq Lamptey and he wants to play with Lamptey. He is not able to play with Brighton, how can he play with Ghana,” he said.

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto de Zerbi has questioned Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, over the inclusion of Tariq Lamptey in Ghana’s 55-man provisional AFCON squad.

Lamptey is recovering from an injury suffered in Brighton’s game against Nottingham Forest. In November of this year, Roberto de Zerbi said Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey would be out for a long time with his latest injury.

Man City pledges to haunt down fans behind ‘offensive’ Sir Bobby Charlton chants

Manchester City has strongly condemned the “offensive” chants that were directed at the late Sir Bobby Charlton during their match against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The football legend, who represented England and Manchester United, passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday, prompting clubs throughout the English Football League to pay their respects in the latest round of fixtures.

Regrettably, a section of Manchester City fans engaged in derogatory chants aimed at the 1966 World Cup winner during City’s 2-1 victory over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium.

In response, as reported by BBC Sport, Manchester City has issued an official statement expressing their disappointment and their commitment to identifying and banning the individuals responsible for these offensive chants.

“The club condemns these chants in the strongest terms and apologises unreservedly to the family and friends of Sir Bobby, and to all those at Manchester United,” the statement reads.

“On this day of all days, when the stadium stood to pay tribute to our own legend in Francis Lee, Manchester City supporters should understand and appreciate as keenly as anyone the need for respect in our game.

“Our security team are studying CCTV footage of the concourse areas. We are thankful to those who have already come forward to report this matter.

“We continue to appeal for any information that can help us identify the individuals involved so that we can take the appropriate action to issue banning orders.”

In the upcoming Manchester derby of the 2023-24 Premier League season, which will be hosted by Charlton’s former club, Manchester United, City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has confirmed that his team will participate in a special pre-match tribute.

This tribute will honor Sir Bobby Charlton, a footballing legend who scored an impressive 249 goals in 758 appearances for the Red Devils.

  • ‘It’s about choice’ – Pochettino on Noni Madueke exclusion from Carabao Cup squad in Brighton clash

Noni Madueke was absent from the Chelsea squad for their Carabao Cup triumph against Brighton, and Mauricio Pochettino has provided an explanation for this decision.

Pochettino made five changes to his starting lineup compared to their previous Premier League match against Aston Villa, affording opportunities to Cole Palmer, Ian Maatsen, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Marc Cucurella.

Despite his previous goal in the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon, Madueke was not named in the matchday squad.

Although Madueke has only played 44 minutes in the Premier League this season, Pochettino has clarified that the winger is not sidelined due to injury.

Following Chelsea’s victory at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino was questioned about Madueke’s absence: “It’s about choice, it’s about choice. Election.”

Chelsea secured a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, with Nicolas Jackson scoring the decisive goal in the second half.

In the upcoming fourth round of the Carabao Cup, Pochettino’s team will play host to Blackburn Rovers.

Chelsea, who have faced difficulties at the beginning of the season, are set to face Fulham next on Monday, October 2nd.

Tariq Lamptey earns the MOTM award in Brighton-Hove Albion’s triumph against Man Utd

Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey received the Man of the Match award following Brighton’s impressive 3-1 victory against Manchester United.

Lamptey displayed sensational form for the Seagulls as they travelled to Old Trafford, securing a win as the English Premier League resumed after the international break.

Notably, Lamptey had been omitted from Ghana’s recent matches against the Central African Republic and Liberia due to his recent return from injury. His return to action took place in the game against Newcastle United just before the international break.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi entrusted the talented 22-year-old right-back with a starting role against Manchester United, and Lamptey delivered brilliantly by providing two assists during the 3-1 triumph.

Brighton initiated the scoring in the first half, courtesy of English-born Ghanaian Danny Welbeck, before Lamptey contributed with an assist for the second goal after halftime, which was expertly finished by Pascal Gross.

Lamptey continued to make his mark by setting up Joao Pedro’s goal, securing Brighton’s third as De Zerbi’s team dismantled Manchester United in front of their own supporters.’

Man United suffer home defeat against Brighton

Brighton achieved a remarkable 3-1 victory against Manchester United, adding to the woes of Erik ten Hag’s team following a tumultuous two weeks marked by controversies.

Jadon Sancho was excluded from the first-team squad, and Antony was granted a leave of absence due to assault allegations that emerged after their disappointing last-minute defeat to Arsenal.

On Saturday afternoon, Brighton compounded Manchester United’s misery on the field, with goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross, and Joao Pedro, offset only by Hannibal Mejbri’s consolation effort.

This defeat marked the end of Manchester United’s 31-game unbeaten streak at home in all competitions and occurred against the very team that last defeated them at Old Trafford during Erik ten Hag’s inaugural match in charge.

Welbeck, a former United player, opened the scoring, while Marcus Rashford’s strike struck the woodwork and Rasmus Hojlund’s first goal for the club was disallowed by VAR.

Gross, who netted both goals in last season’s win at Old Trafford, extended Brighton’s lead early in the second half, and substitute Pedro added another goal.

Despite Hannibal’s goal, there was no dramatic comeback akin to United’s recent home game against Nottingham Forest. Attention now shifts to Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Brighton, on the other hand, can look forward to a historic Europa League match against AEK Athens after securing only their second victory at Old Trafford in their history.

De Zerbi made six surprising changes, while Ten Hag made three and opted for a midfield diamond that initially troubled the visitors.

Rashford’s skill and determination led to a low shot saved by Jason Steele, and Hojlund headed over. The two nearly combined when the newcomer stretched for Rashford’s cross.

However, Brighton remained composed and took the lead in the 20th minute through a well-executed move. Welbeck surged toward the box after playing wide to Simon Adingra, whose low cross from the right was cleverly left by Adam Lallana for the 32-year-old to score.

The goal injected energy into Brighton fans, but United responded five minutes before halftime. Rashford’s stepovers allowed him to reach the byline and pull back for Hojlund, who turned and poked the ball into the net for what seemed like his first United goal.

However, VAR intervened, and referee Jarred Gillett was informed by VAR Chris Kavanagh that the ball had gone out of play before Rashford made the pass.

United tried to rally, with Rashford looking dangerous, but Brighton remained determined to secure a second goal.

Gross capitalized on a pass from Tariq Lamptey just inside the box, sending Lisandro Martinez tumbling with a shoulder feint before scoring in front of the away fans.

United struggled to recover from that 53rd-minute blow, and Ten Hag made a change, replacing Hojlund with Martial, a decision that was met with audible disapproval.

Rashford’s free-kick was saved as the hosts desperately sought a goal, but Brighton struck again in the 71st minute.

Lamptey sprinted down the left, cut the ball back to substitute Pedro, who opened his body to fire a right-footed shot past Onana.

United managed to pull one back immediately, courtesy of young Hannibal, who unleashed a shot from 25 yards that beat Steele.

Victor Lindelof headed over, but intelligent Brighton controlled the game, exploiting the gaps left by the desperate hosts.

Kaoru Mitoma, substitute Evan Ferguson, and debutant Ansu Fati saw their shots saved as the clock ran down, with Onana stopping the latter again in stoppage time.

  • Brighton defeat is a warning to Newcastle, Howe admits

Brighton defeat is a warning to Newcastle, Howe admits

Eddie Howe concedes that Newcastle’s defeat at Brighton serves as a stark reminder that they cannot afford to let their Champions League campaign divert attention from the demanding Premier League.

The Magpies are making their return to the group stage of European football’s premier competition after a two-decade absence.

They have been drawn to face formidable opponents in AC Milan, Paris St Germain, and Borussia Dortmund.

However, the anticipation surrounding these upcoming clashes was quickly dampened by a string of three consecutive Premier League defeats, with 18-year-old Evan Ferguson’s hat-trick sealing a 3-1 victory for Brighton.

Manager Eddie Howe, whose team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against 10-man Liverpool the previous weekend and a 1-0 loss to Manchester City, acknowledges his responsibility for this recent downturn in form but emphasizes that he will approach the situation with measured perspective.

“It’s never been lost on me how difficult the Premier League is,” he said.

“I know how tough a league it is, it’s ruthless, so if you get your focus swayed, you’re going to have big problems – I don’t think our focus has been.

“We’ve tried to very much concentrate on our next match, that will always be our focus and we’re determined to be successful in the league this year and win as many games as possible.

“But we know the demands placed upon us are going to be extreme so this is a warning, I think, that we can’t be swayed and the Premier League is a very tough division.

“We’ve lost three in a row and we have to take responsibility for that. It’s important that I don’t over-react.”

Newcastle initially enjoyed the advantage in the early chances of the match on the south coast. However, they found themselves trailing after Evan Ferguson’s 27th-minute goal, a result of defensive lapses.

The Republic of Ireland striker then added to his tally with a remarkable long-range strike. He went on to achieve a rare feat by becoming only the fourth teenager in Premier League history to score a hat-trick, with one of his goals taking a deflection off Fabian Schar.

Manager Eddie Howe, who disclosed that midfielder Joe Willock would be sidelined for an additional six weeks due to a hamstring injury compounded by a fresh Achilles problem, is eager for a swift return to action as his team heads into a two-week international break.

“I’d like a game pretty quickly, if I could,” said Howe, whose team host Brentford on September 17.

“We have some great games to come and we’re looking forward to that challenge.

“I think the challenge to me is to lift everybody and keep our confidence levels because we are a very good team and we have to always have that in the back of our minds as we go into the next two weeks.

“The lads are very disappointed. Collectively we’ve got an outstanding group of individuals, great mentalities and we know what we’ve got to do.”

Ferguson’s first senior hat-trick, which was followed by Callum Wilson’s consolation, was the third in the Premier League on Saturday after trebles for Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min.

“It’s a good day,” he told Brighton’s website. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.

“It’s not bad company to be in; Haaland’s record last season (52 City goals in all competitions) and Son’s been doing it for a number of years, so it’s good company to be in.”

Ahead of kick-off, the Seagulls paraded 20-year Spain forward Ansu Fati following his deadline-day loan switch from Barcelona.

“He’s going to be great for the squad, especially as competition,” said Ferguson.

“It’s tough up that area of the pitch and he’s going to be another one chucked in there and I reckon he’ll be very good for it.”

  • Brighton boss appears ‘disgruntled’ over Caicedo move, says he’s ‘already forgotten’ about him

Brighton boss appears ‘disgruntled’ over Caicedo move, says he’s ‘already forgotten’ about him

Brighton’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, indicated that he had moved on from midfielder Moises Caicedo after Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, confirmed that an agreement had been reached for the Ecuadorian international.

Reportedly, the Seagulls have accepted a fee of £110 million ($140 million, 127 million euros), potentially setting a British record, for the 21-year-old player. Nevertheless, according to Sky Sports, Caicedo is yet to finalise his decision about his future, with Chelsea also displaying interest.

Brighton has followed a successful business model that involves signing lesser-known players and later selling them for substantial fees.

This approach has seen Argentina’s World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister move to Anfield earlier in this transfer window.

Additionally, players like Ben White and Leandro Trossard of Arsenal, Marc Cucurella of Chelsea, and Yves Bissouma of Tottenham have left Brighton for ‘larger’ Premier League clubs over the past two years.

But Seagulls boss De Zerbi, whose side start the new season at home to promoted Luton on Saturday in a campaign that will also include Europa League football, said Friday: “I’ve already forgotten Moises. I’m really proud of the players we have in the squad. We have to complete the squad.”

The Italian added: “We want to improve the squad because we lost Mac Allister, we lost (Levi) Colwill (on loan from Chelsea last season), and maybe we lose Caicedo.

“We have to be ready because when the players leave, it’s because they played well, but the credit is for the club, for the players, and for us, the coaches.

“The big clubs can buy the players, but they can’t buy our soul and our spirit. That’s not on the market, and this is more important than the players leaving.

“The money is not my work, is not my job. I can answer only about the transfer market in general. Moises is leaving and is not important for me now.”

Klopp confirms Liverpool- Brighton deal for Caicedo, acknowledges wrongs about transfer spendings

Liverpool has come to an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of Moises Caicedo (21), an Ecuadorian midfielder, as confirmed by manager Jurgen Klopp on Friday. This move is aimed at addressing Liverpool’s midfield depth issues.

Caicedo’s notable performances at Brighton have sparked speculation about his potential departure from the Amex Stadium.

He made 37 appearances for the club in the previous season, contributing significantly to their sixth-place finish and their qualification for European football for the first time.

Various clubs, including Chelsea, have shown interest in the Ecuadorean midfielder during the current transfer window. However, recent reports in the British media indicate that Liverpool has secured a deal with Brighton, amounting to £111 million.

“I can confirm the Caicedo deal with the club is agreed, whatever that means in the end. Of course, we want the player and not just the agreement,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Sunday’s season-opener at Chelsea.

“We don’t have endless resources. We didn’t expect a couple of things to happen over the summer, but when they did, we gave it a go. Let’s see what happens, and we go from there.”

Caicedo’s reported transfer fee would make him the most expensive player signed by a British club, surpassing the 107 million pounds Chelsea paid for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez earlier this year.

In 2016, when speaking about Manchester United’s then-world record signing of Paul Pogba for 89.3 million pounds, Klopp said he would approach transfer spending differently if he had the same resources at his disposal.

When asked how he felt about those words following the agreement for Caicedo, the German said, “Everything changed. Do I like it? No. Did I realise I was wrong? Yes.

“I’m not blaming anyone, but it’s just the market. In the end, we as a club have to make sure that, with our resources, we get the best possible player.

“We aren’t in a dreamland and can’t just point at a player and get them to come in. Sometimes one door closes and another opens up.”

  • Chelsea mull bid for PSG’s Marco Verratti as PSG star snubs Saudi move

Chelsea mull bid for PSG’s Marco Verratti as PSG star snubs Saudi move

Chelsea is contemplating the possibility of pursuing Verratti as an option, especially following their unsuccessful attempt to secure Moises Caicedo from Brighton, a deal that ultimately went to Liverpool, as reported by Footmercato.

Furthermore, Verratti has shifted his preference away from the Middle East and is now keen on remaining in Europe.

This change in stance has captured the interest of Chelsea, who are now displaying a keen desire to bring the seasoned midfielder on board to strengthen their midfield lineup.

An additional factor that makes Verratti an appealing prospect for the Blues is his familiarity with Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical strategies.

Pochettino is currently working on shaping a new-look midfield at Stamford Bridge, with Enzo Fernandez positioned as the central figure of this project.

Given this context, Verratti’s experience at the age of 30 could prove valuable, as it would provide valuable guidance for emerging talents like Connor Gallagher, Andre Santos, and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Having received information from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) that he does not figure into their plans for the upcoming season, Verratti is now free to explore new opportunities elsewhere.

This is evident from PSG’s decision to exclude him from open media day activities, alongside contract dispute-embroiled Kylian Mbappe and other players who are no longer part of their immediate plans.

  • Mohammed Kudus’ move to Brighton in limbo

Mohammed Kudus’ move to Brighton in limbo

Brighton & Hove Albion, a team in the English Premier League, is encountering challenges in reaching an agreement on personal terms with Mohammed Kudus for his potential signing.

Over the recent weekend, the club successfully negotiated a deal with Dutch giants for the acquisition of the prominent Black Stars player.

Since Monday, officials from Brighton have been in discussions with Mohammed Kudus and his representatives, aiming to finalize the agreement within this week.

Presently, the situation appears to be unfavorable for the English Premier League team.

According to Footballghana, Mohammed Kudus has requested the inclusion of a release clause in his contract.

However, Brighton & Hove Albion is uncomfortable with this request and is unwilling to comply.

This particular point of contention has become a major obstacle in the negotiation process, with reports suggesting that the much-anticipated transfer is now in a state of uncertainty and might ultimately fall through.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus remains focused on his plans to participate for Ajax on Saturday, August 12, as the team kicks off the new Eredivisie season.

The opening weekend will see Ajax hosting Heracles.

  • Kudus move to Brighton has delayed, find out why

Dutch media reports suggest that a potential transfer involving Ajax midfielder Kudus Mohammed and Premier League team Brighton and Hove Albion has hit a roadblock due to a release clause.

Allegedly, Kudus is requesting the inclusion of a release clause in the deal, a demand that Brighton has declined to accommodate.

This refusal by the club to agree to a release clause has caused delays in discussions over personal terms, leading to uncertainty about the transfer’s current feasibility.

As previously noted by Dutch journalist Tim van Duijn, Ajax has given the player a 48-hour timeframe to reach an agreement with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Brighton has already reached an arrangement with Ajax to secure Kudus for a transfer fee amounting to 40 million euros.

At present, both Ajax and Brighton are awaiting the player’s approval to proceed and finalize the transaction.

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs reached an accord back in July, with the player’s decision now being the decisive factor.

Despite interest from notable clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund, no formal bids have been presented to Ajax for Mohammed Kudus.

The Ghanaian midfielder still has two years remaining on his contract, having initially signed a five-year deal with Ajax in 2020 following his transfer from Nordsjaelland.

Chris Hughton speaks on why ex club, Brighton is being lackadaisical in selling Caicedo to CHelsea

Moises Caicedo, the midfielder who has attracted interest from Chelsea and holds a valuation of 100 million Euros, might not be swiftly departing from his current club, Brighton and Hove Albion, according to former manager Chris Hughton.

The 64-year-old Hughton commented that the Seagulls have been making impressive moves in the ongoing transfer market, even though they recently bid farewell to Alexis MacAllister for 42 million Euros and Robert Sanchez to Chelsea for 23 million Euros.

In contrast, Brighton has made significant acquisitions, including Jao Pedro for 32 million Euros, Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht for 20 million Euros, and Brazilian defender Igor from Fiorentina for 17 million Euros.

Hughton, speaking on TalkSport, expressed that in his tenure, the club might have allowed Moises Caicedo to depart, but under the current direction, Brighton is not eager to part ways with the Ecuadorian midfielder.

“Brighton as a club at this moment has done incredibly good business and I would imagine they are not desperate to sell”.

“I think the circumstances have changed because the Brighton I know a few years ago would have accepted this offer. But they are in a very good position and I think they will sell when the value is correct”, he added.

Caicedo had a standout 2022–23 season, helping Brighton and Hove qualify for the European Europa League for the first time after placing sixth the previous year. Brighton & Hove will be eager to keep him.

Ghanaian youngster, Ernest Nuamah to replace Kudus at Ajax – Report

Renowned Dutch club Ajax is actively searching for a successor to Mohammed Kudus as he prepares to depart this summer, according to reports.

The Ghanaian striker has been the subject of various transfer speculations in recent months.

Despite significant interest from clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Borussia Dortmund, Kudus remains an integral part of Ajax.

Over the weekend, news emerged that Brighton & Hove Albion from the English Premier League have secured an agreement with Ajax to acquire Kudus.

While the possibility of losing the prominent Ghanaian player is acknowledged, Ajax is proactively scouting potential candidates to fill his shoes.

Among the prospects being considered is young Ghanaian talent Ernest Nuamah. Ajax perceives Nuamah as an ideal replacement for Kudus and is reportedly ready to present an offer to FC Nordsjaelland in the event of Kudus’s departure this summer.

Aged 20, Nuamah has already made a name for himself in the Danish Superliga since last season. Impressively, he has tallied four goals and contributed one assist in just three appearances this season.

Kudus set for Brighton medicals on Tuesday to finalize Ajax exit

Ghanaian football sensation, Mohammed Kudus, is set to undergo a medical evaluation on Tuesday, August 8, in connection with his imminent transfer to the English Premier League outfit, Brighton & Hove Albion.

The highly promising young player has been the subject of numerous speculations linking him to various clubs ever since the summer transfer window opened.

Earlier on Monday, reports emerged that Ajax had given Mohammed Kudus a 48-hour window to make a decision about his future.

Recent sources have informed Footballghana that the prominent figure in Ghana’s national team has chosen Brighton & Hove Albion for the next phase of his career.

It is anticipated that he will make the journey to England tomorrow to undergo the obligatory medical examination.

Pending successful completion of the medical tests, the gifted forward will finalise the deal by signing a contract to officially join Brighton.

Upon investigation, it has been revealed that Brighton will pay Ajax a fee of £38 million for the transfer and also commit to a 15% share of any potential future transfer involving Mohammed Kudus.

  • Brighton close to signing Kudus

    Brighton close to signing Kudus

Brighton appears to be on the verge of outpacing Arsenal and Chelsea in securing the signing of Ajax winger Mohammed Kudus.

The 23-year-old Ghanaian talent has swiftly garnered recognition as one of global football’s most promising attacking prospects, impressing both at Ajax and on the international stage.

Reportedly turning down a contract extension offer from his current club in April, Arsenal and Chelsea have both been vying to entice Kudus to London.

Yet, according to David Ornstein from The Athletic, it’s Brighton that has now taken the lead, having agreed upon a £34.5 million transfer fee to bring him to the Amex Stadium.

Discussions between the player and the club are currently underway, aiming to finalize what could be a standout addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, which is set to compete in the Europa League.

Kudus, who is also versatile enough to play as an attacking midfielder or a central striker, impressively netted 18 goals across 42 matches for Ajax in the previous season, including four goals in six Champions League appearances.

Kudus also received praise for his performances at the Qatar World Cup, notably scoring two goals in Ghana’s thrilling 3-2 victory over South Korea.

His current manager, Maurice Steijn, recently shared his perspective on Kudus’ future, advising the young talent to remain with the team.

Steijn said: “I feel that when Kudus decides to stay for one more year, the real top clubs will then come for him.

“If we win the league and he scores 20 goals, clubs will pay double for him. This is what we are trying to tell him now.”

However, the 49-year-old’s plea appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

Tariq Lamptey returns to field after injury

Black Stars defender, Tariq Lamptey, has made a remarkable comeback after a lengthy injury spell in Brighton and Hove Albion’s Premier League Summer Series match against Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old right-back had not played since March due to his injury sustained during a game against West Ham.

However, after undergoing an intense recovery and training program, Lamptey finally returned to the field.

Despite Brighton’s 2-1 pre-season defeat to Newcastle United, Lamptey’s return brought optimism to the team.

The elated defender took to social media to express his gratitude, saying, “Thank God always! Enjoyed being back out there, now time to push on.”

His comeback is a significant boost for Brighton and Hove, especially with their busy season ahead following their qualification to Europe.

Despite speculations about a potential move to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, it seems that Lamptey remains an essential part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.

Moreover, his return is good news for the Black Stars as they prepare for the AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic in September.

In the match, Danny Welbeck scored the first goal for Brighton, but Newcastle came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory.

  • Newcastle’s Eddie Howe lauds team’s comeback after narrow defeat of Brighton

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe lauds team’s comeback after narrow defeat of Brighton

Eddie Howe expressed admiration for his Newcastle players after they secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton in the Premier League Summer Series.

The Magpies had been intensifying their pre-season preparations, following a 1-1 draw against Chelsea earlier.

Against their domestic rivals, they managed to clinch a win.

Elliot Anderson’s quick-fire two goals in just six minutes stunned the Seagulls, and Howe was pleased with how his team executed everything he had asked of them during the match.

He said: “It was a really tough game today, we always know that when we play Brighton.

“I felt defensively we were excellent, it was more in possession that we really struggled.

“We had a couple of players playing out of position and that is always difficult but I was really pleased with the commitment and attitude of the players to deliver what we asked them to do.
“I don’t think they had an amazing amount of chances, I thought we were a threat in the game all the way through and delighted to win in the end.”

Anderson has been a standout performer for the Tyneside club during the summer and is looking to take his game to the next level during the upcoming campaign.

The former Bristol Rovers loanee found himself in the right positions for both of his goals and struck superbly to beat Bart Verbruggen.

On the 20-year-old, Howe added: “He was running right until the end, he came back as the fittest player in all of our tests and it’s no surprise that he is the one who got the winning goal.

“He has always been a goalscorer and creator. He has started to show with his endurance levels and physicality the quality that he has.”

Anderson made 23 appearances in the Premier League last season with most of them coming from the bench, but he could be in line for a starting spot in 2023-24.

Reflecting on last night’s match, he said: “You always want more and I could have more, I just need to tidy a few things up.

“There were a few goals I set out before coming over to America which was to score more goals.”

Brighton fortifies their defense with Igor from Fiorentina in Serie A

Brighton & Hove Albion has completed the signing of defender Igor Julio (25) from Serie A club Fiorentina.

The Premier League club announced the acquisition on Wednesday, with Igor joining on a four-year contract.

Though the transfer fee was not disclosed officially, British media reported that Brighton would pay Fiorentina 17 million euros for the Brazilian player.

Igor initially joined Fiorentina on loan from Italian club SPAL in January 2020, and after impressing during his loan spell, he signed a permanent deal with Fiorentina in May 2021.

During his time with Fiorentina, Igor showcased his talent, making nearly 110 appearances in all competitions.

He played a significant role in the team’s 2022–23 campaign, helping them reach the finals of the Europa Conference League and the Italian Cup.

Unfortunately, Fiorentina lost both finals to West Ham United and Inter Milan, respectively.

Igor’s journey in Europe began in 2016 when he moved from Brazil to join Austrian second-tier side Liefering.

He later had stints with Salzburg and went on loan at Wolfsberger and Austria Wien.

Fake Uber driver sentenced to 23 years in prison for prowling streets with rape kit

A fake Uber driver who was seen cruising Brighton‘s streets with a “rape kit in his car” was given a 23-year prison term.

Graham Head, 66, was described by the court as a “dangerous, sexual predator” while he was receiving his sentence at Brighton Crown Court.

He was only pulled down after the victim managed to keep some of his personalised licence plate.

The judge commended the woman—who cannot be identified for legal reasons—for her foresight in memorising some of the number plate details and in immediately dialling the police.

“If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t have been captured, and we wouldn’t be here today,” Judge Jeremy Gold KC said in his honour.

While stalking Brighton’s streets in search of weak, young ladies, Head kept Viagra, rubber gloves, a balaclava, and baby oil in his car.

After a police automobile pursuit across the beach city, the lewd octogenarian was apprehended.

After giving her a ride from Brighton to the park, he made an attempt to rape her.

When her phone rang, he hurried away, the jury was told.

On November 18, a 20-year-old lady reported awakening in what she thought was a cab to discover a man sexually assaulting her.

After giving Head a kick in the groyne, she was able to flee.

Around three in the morning, she dialled the police and was able to recall the first three digits of the licence plate on his silver Mercedes estate.

Police pulled Head over when he was sporting a facemask.

When police investigated his Pevensey, East Sussex residence, they discovered a retractable baton and an incapacitating spray.

Through the use of doorbell and CCTV cameras, investigators pieced together Head’s actions.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was lauded by Sussex Police for her bravery and fast thinking.

He was a “vibrant, lively, family man,” according to Head’s defence attorney Francesca Levett, but he also had significant long-term health issues.

She claimed that Head suffers from recurring meningitis and an incurable brain aneurysm.

Graham Head is a predatory offender who acquired the trust of his victims by appearing as a taxi driver, only to take advantage of helpless women in the most heinous manner, according to Detective Constable Elliott Lander of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team.

“The items found in his car demonstrate the callous, premeditated nature of his crimes as he roamed Brighton and Hove looking for potential victims.”

We were able to rapidly link Head to both incidents and bring him to justice because of the quick thinking and bravery of these two women.

I want to thank them both for their assistance with this study.

“Without them, this dangerous person might still be on the loose.”

Instead, he was brought to justice, making the streets of Brighton and Hove safer as a result.

“We suspect Head may have additional victims who have not yet come forward.”

Invoking Operation Cooper, anyone with information is urged to get in touch with the police online or by dialling 101.

Ghanaian international, Tariq Lamptey, has commenced training with Brighton and Hove Albion as they prepare for the upcoming 2023/24 English Premiership season.

Lamptey had been sidelined due to a knee injury sustained in a league match against West Ham in March, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Unfortunately, the former Chelsea right-back was also unable to participate in Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola in March.

In his absence, Kingsley Schindler, a German-born player, was selected by Black Stars coach Chris Hughton to fill the void.

Lamptey was also unavailable for Ghana’s AFCON qualifier against Madagascar on June 18, 2023, in Antananarivo.

Now, Lamptey has returned to training with Brighton and Hove Albion, aiming to regain fitness and contribute to the team’s efforts in the upcoming season.

Tariq Lamptey made 23 appearances in all competitions in the just-ended season, scoring just a goal.

The Brighton and Hove Albion man through the Tariq Lamptey Foundation, donated items including, jerseys and football boots to kids in Asamankese in the West Akim Municipal District, in the Eastern Region on Friday, May 30.

Due to worries that they would miss out on signing Mickey van de Ven, Spurs have entered the competition for the talent of Chelsea’s gifted center-back Colwill.

The young defender has a lengthy list of supporters, and this north London club is the latest.

Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on securing the services of the 20 year-old while Brighton want him on a permanent deal after he spent the last season on loan with the Seagulls.

Chelsea are adamant on keeping hold of the Southampton-born player and have reiterated the youngster isn’t for sale.

Mauricio Pochettino is set to hand him a key role for next season in a bid to keep him at the club.

Colwill played a key role in England’s Under 21 European winning campaign recently. He started five out of six games as England conceded zero goals throughout the tournament.

  • Brighton sign Anderlecht’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen

Brighton sign Anderlecht’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen

On Monday, Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion announced the signing of goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Belgian side Anderlecht.

The 20-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract with the club, although the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.

However, reports from British media suggest that Brighton paid around £16 million for the talented young goalkeeper, who was named Anderlecht’s player of the season.

Verbruggen, a Dutch goalkeeper, began his career at NAC Breda in the Netherlands before making the move to Anderlecht in 2020.

Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi expressed his belief that Verbruggen will be a great fit for the club’s playing style, which emphasizes playing out from the back.

“He is used to playing a type of football similar to ours and he will have no problem fitting into our group,” De Zerbi said.

“He has the potential to become a very important player for the club in the coming years.”

Brighton finished sixth in the table and will play in the Europa League next season.

Verbruggen is their fourth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Joao Pedro from Watford, Germany midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud from Borussia Dortmund and James Milner from Liverpool.

Man United, Chelsea racing for Brighton’s Caicedo

Chelsea is preparing to begin negotiations with Brighton regarding the potential transfer of midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues are confident that reaching personal terms with the 21-year-old will not be a problem, as Caicedo is already eager to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

During the January transfer window, Caicedo attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

However, he opted to remain at the Amex Stadium and signed a new contract, with the understanding that he would be permitted to explore a transfer if interest in his services resurfaced during the summer.

Competition is expected to arrive from Manchester United, with Sky Sports reporting that the club are also interested in the Ecuador international.

Previous reports have indicated that it would take an offer of around £80 million ($101.1m) to persuade manager Roberto De Zerbi to part ways with his star midfielder, who played in 37 of 38 Premier League matches last season.

Tariq Lamptey recounts time with De Zerbi at Brighton and Europe qualification

Ghanaian defender, Tariq Lamptey, has shed light on the reasons behind the successful first season of Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton & Hove Albion.

De Zerbi, who previously coached Sassuolo, took over the reins from Graham Potter early in the season after Potter’s departure to Chelsea.

Under De Zerbi’s guidance, Brighton & Hove Albion achieved a historic feat by securing European qualification for the first time in their history, finishing in sixth place in the recently concluded campaign.

Tariq lamptey quits England for Ghana

Lamptey attributes the team’s transformation and success to the impact of De Zerbi, who has proven to be a skillful and influential manager.

His managerial prowess has made Brighton & Hove Albion a formidable side, enabling them to achieve remarkable results and earn their spot in European competition.

“I have worked under two great coaches [Potter] and [De Zerbi] now and we have played attractive football.

We always try to be on the front foot and score a lot of goals and it is entertaining to watch, to be honest,” he told Citi Sport, as quoted by GHANA Soccernet.

He said the tendency of Brighton to pass was something practiced during training and the Italian helped bring these techniques into games.

Under De Zerbi, the Seagulls have beaten some of the best sides in England, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool.

Following their success this season, Brighton will now compete in the Europa League.

“Qualifying to play in Europe is amazing. It is the first time in the history of the club and it is very exciting to be part of this achievement,” Lamptey added.

The 22-year-old has been out of action since March after picking up an injury in the match against West Ham United, as reported by The Athletic.

Lamptey missed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and has been ruled out of the upcoming game against Madagascar in June.

    Lamptey explains Ghana switch

Previously, Sports Brief reported that ex-England youth international, Lamptey revealed why he switched nationalities to Black Stars.

Although he was born in England to Ghanaian parents and represented the country at a youth level, he changed to the west Africans in June last year.

Lamptey was eventually named in Ghana’s national squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, having made his debut against Brazil in September that year.

  • Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record during Brighton, City game

Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record during Brighton, City game

Erling Haaland, the rising star for Manchester City, kept up his remarkable Premier League form on Wednesday, May 24, when his team competed against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Pep Guardiola felt the necessity to choose a quality lineup for the EPL cracker even though the game had little relevance for City.

The match, according to The Guardian, concluded in a 1-1 draw with goals from Phil Foden and Julio Enciso for each team.

Haaland was also on target for the champions in what should have been the winner but saw his goal chalked off after a VAR review.

Foden opened the scoring for the visitors in the 25th minute of the clash before Enciso restored parity in the 38th minute with what would potentially be a goal-of-the-season contender.

    Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s record

Despite Haaland’s goal being ruled out, it was not all gloom and doom for the Norwegian star, whose contribution in the match saw him equal a record held by Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace was responsible for City’s opener, scored by Foden as he set up the Englishman for the goal.

According to Squawka, this was Haaland’s 44th goal involvement in the Premier League, having previously scored 36 goals and bagged eight assists.

The tally is enough for him to match Henry’s, with the former Arsenal star setting the record during the 2002/03 campaign.

At the time, the Frenchman scored 24 goals and bagged an incredible 20 assists.

Haaland has an opportunity to break that record and set his own, with City still yet to play two matches.

    Haaland joins fans in dance

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Haaland was once again the center of attention during Man City’s Premier League trophy presentation.

The Norwegian was involved in a heartwarming moment with City fans, leaving an on-pitch interview to join supporters in dance.

Sky Sports had managed to get hold of the striker for an interview before he rushed away to celebrate with jubilant home supporters.

Reports indicate that Liverpool is nearing the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, the talented midfielder from Brighton.

However, time is of the essence, as the summer transfer window approaches and Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, is keen to strengthen his midfield options.

Mac Allister is the top target for the Reds in their quest to reinforce their squad.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, an agreement on personal terms is “90 per cent done” between the Merseysiders and the versatile midfielder.

However, Liverpool will have to be quick as the Argentina international’s contract includes a fixed amount that can only be triggered in June.

Klopp’s side will have to act swiftly to also avoid a potential transfer war with Chelsea as their incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the 24-year-old.

Romano told his YouTube show Here we Go: “There is a fixed amount into the contract of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton.

“We could say that this is working like a release clause. Yes, there is an exit clause for Alexis Mac Allister to leave Brighton.

“Formally, it’s something that Alexis Mac Allister’s camp and Brighton decided when he signed a new contract months ago.

” In that moment they decided the fixed amount for Alexis Mac Allister to leave the club in the summer and to leave the club in June. So early in the window.

“This is why Liverpool want to be fast, the agreement on personal terms is 90 per cent done.

“So Alexis Mac Allister is really really close to Liverpool but this clause is also helpful on club side.

“Liverpool need now to complete the agreement on these details and then in that moment will be able to complete the deal.

Busquets nearly fought Espanyol fans after attempted attacks on Barca players

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets bravely confronted a group of aggressive Espanyol fans who were trying to attack him and his teammates after their match on Sunday.

The incident occurred at the RCDE Stadium, where Barcelona secured a 4-2 victory over Espanyol, securing their first La Liga title in four years.

Following the final whistle, as the Barcelona players were leaving the pitch, a group of frenzied Espanyol fans attempted to approach them with hostile intentions.

In the face of this dangerous situation, Sergio Busquets displayed remarkable courage and took a stand against the approaching fans.

Busquets, known for his composure on the field, fearlessly confronted the unruly group, ensuring the safety of himself and his teammates.

His actions showcased both his dedication to protecting his fellow players and his refusal to tolerate violence in the sport.

The match itself was significant for Barcelona, as the victory sealed their first La Liga title in four years.

Xavi and his side congregated in the centre circle to celebrate after the final whistle, but they were forced to flee after hundreds of fans invaded the pitch.

The Espanyol supporters attempted to attack the Barcelona stars, who sprinted back to the tunnel to escape the danger.

However, Busquets sensationally stood up to the mob as several fans attempted to force their way past security.

“It’s a job well done. This started in July and after months of work and sacrifice we have achieved our aim.

“The fans and the club deserve it, it gives us stability and security that things are being done well.

“We have sealed La Liga with a fantastic performance. We were brilliant tonight. The team relaxed at the end and Espanyol showed pride.”

Throughout the history of football, there have been unfortunate incidents where footballers have been attacked on the pitch by fans from the opposing side.

These incidents highlight the darker side of the sport and have had a significant impact on player safety and fan behavior.

One notable incident occurred during the European Cup final in 1985 between Liverpool and Juventus at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.
A group of Liverpool fans charged at the Juventus supporters, leading to a wall collapsing and resulting in the death of 39 people, mostly Juventus fans.

This tragic event led to English clubs being banned from European competitions for several years.

Another high-profile incident took place during an international match between Colombia and Peru in 1993.

Colombian defender Andrés Escobar scored an own goal, which contributed to Colombia’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup.

Tragically, Escobar was later shot and killed outside a nightclub, with his death believed to be a result of his own goal and the anger it incited among some fans.

In more recent times, instances of player attacks by fans have also occurred. In 2018, a fan invaded the pitch during a friendly match between Aston Villa and Birmingham City, punching Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

The incident sparked outrage and led to legal consequences for the fan involved.

Such incidents highlight the need for increased security measures, fan education, and stricter punishments for those involved in violent behavior.

Football governing bodies and clubs have implemented various measures to improve player safety, including enhanced stadium security, surveillance systems, and increased awareness campaigns to promote respect and fair play.

  • Arteta sorry for Arsenal’s crushing defeat to Brighton

Arteta sorry for Arsenal’s crushing defeat to Brighton

Following a devastating 3-0 home defeat to Brighton, Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration and issued an apology to the Arsenal supporters, as their hopes of clinching the Premier League title were virtually extinguished.

Second-half goals from Julio Enciso, Deniz Undav, and Pervis Estupinan led Brighton to a well-deserved victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City now only need one more win from their remaining three matches to secure their championship reign. Should Arsenal lose to Nottingham Forest, City could be crowned champions on Saturday night.

With a four-point gap and a game in hand, Pep Guardiola‘s team holds a significant advantage over the Gunners, who have struggled, winning only two of their last seven matches.

“A really different feeling to the feeling that we all had last Sunday (at Newcastle) when we felt proud and we felt that we really did what we needed to win in certain moments. Today is completely the opposite,” Arteta admitted.

“We have to apologise to our people, especially for the second half.

“What I have to accept first is what happened in the second half and digest it.

“After that until it’s mathematically over… the second position is secure. That’s not going to change. We have to digest and that will take a few days.

“At the moment it’s just frustration. The feeling that we gave the game away in the second half. We fought really hard to be in the position that we are in and today we were in a critical moment to keeping hoping and digging for that dream.

“When you have to play in these moments you cannot do what we did in the second half.

“Then we have to look. If a team is capable of doing that when it comes to the biggest stage, there’s a lot of things to analyse and think about because it cannot happen.”

Despite losing Gabriel Martinelli to an ankle injury early on, Arsenal started the game strongly against Brighton.

Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard had chances, with Trossard hitting the crossbar and Bukayo Saka missing the target from 14 yards.

However, Brighton capitalized on Arsenal’s missed opportunities right after halftime. Pervis Estupinan’s blocked cross led to Julio Enciso heading in his third goal of the season.

Despite making several changes, Arsenal couldn’t regain control as Brighton sealed the victory. Deniz Undav lobbed the ball past Aaron Ramsdale in the 86th minute, and Estupinan added a close-range finish in stoppage time to further extend Brighton’s lead.

A reflective Arteta added: “Obviously what the team has done over the last 10 months is very different to what anybody expected and that generates a lot of expectation as well enthusiasm, happiness and joy.

“That’s something that has to be managed in the right way and after we have the responsibility to make sure the team performs and I am responsible for that.

“So, I hate the feeling of letting people down when they are expecting something. That’s the biggest regret I have today and I have to apologise for that.”

It was a different set of emotions for Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who laughed off comparisons with Jose Mourinho after he wheeled off down the touchline to celebrate Undav’s goal.

He did insist, however, that nothing had been achieved by his sixth-placed side.

“Yes I am very delighted for the performances. I think we deserved to win but then really happy, really proud because the last five days were very difficult after the defeat on Monday (against Everton),” De Zerbi stated.

“We have 58 points and not enough to qualify for Europe.

“We have another four games, tough games, Newcastle, Southampton, City and last game Aston Villa and we have to fight to deserve to qualify because 58 points is not enough to play Thursdays next year.”

  • Dyche thinks Everton has regained upper hand relegation fight

Dyche thinks Everton has regained upper hand relegation fight

The manager of Everton,Sean Dyche, asserted that his team has regained its “edge” at the perfect time.

A surprise 5-1 win at Brighton on Monday has raised hopes of escaping relegation and he knows that ability to find something extra will be crucial as they host Premier League leaders and treble-chasers Manchester City.

Dyche took over a side at the end of January that had lost eight of nine matches but after the initial bounce a new manager occasionally brings, beating Arsenal and Leeds in his first three games, results tailed off again.

The team had registered just one win in 11 before victory over the Seagulls but Dyche thinks that result – after encouraging signs in their previous outing in a 2-2 draw at Leicester – shows that much sought-after X-factor is returning.

“I looked at some of the performances, the body language, intent and meaning behind the performance and in some way, I thought some things were lacking,” he said.

“We’ve adjusted that side of it, the purposefulness of the side, some of the quality moments, some of the defensive side but the actual feel of the performance and mentality of the performance has grown.

“Watching the intent, body language and desire of a team, it’s hard to explain, but I know it when I see it, I’ve been in the game all my life.

“You get stats – our team and their team – and it can look like there’s nothing in it, but there’s a big difference in body language intent and desire from those stats.

“Compared to some of the performances since I got here, that kind of edge has improved.”

Everton’s win over Brighton was a huge morale boost but facing City, even at Goodison Park, is a daunting task for a side who probably require at least one more win from their remaining three games to extend their top-flight status into a 70th successive season.

And while time is running out to save themselves, as they did on the penultimate game of last season, Dyche is keen to change the view on the significance which has been placed on coming good when it is needed at the end of a campaign.

“The thing I’m trying to get to here is that every single game should matter. Every single game should be the most important one. We are trying to build that momentum,” he added.

“I’ve never believed in ‘the business end of the season’. The first game should be the business end of the season because that might be the one that wins you a title, gets you promoted or keeps you in a division.

“If you take big games along the way then fantastic – it’s great for you, great for the team, great for the prowess of the club and the badge, great for everything.

“But that should be the mentality on day one, not just because you’re playing Man City and it’s near the end of a season.

“We are trying to adjust that, it is a longer-term thing, but that is my belief. Of course it is a fantastic occasion to take on one of the biggest teams in terms of winning trophies, but that doesn’t make it easier.”

  • Watch how Man Utd star Antony eluded red card for kicking opponent

Watch how Man Utd star Antony eluded red card for kicking opponent

Manchester United’s winger Antony was fortunate to avoid a red card after he kicked an opponent during the Premier League game against Brighton and Hove Albion on May 4th.

The Brazilian was back in the starting line-up after being benched in United’s previous game against Aston Villa. He started on his preferred right flank and could have scored in the opening 90 seconds of the match.

The match at the Amex Stadium was a tight affair, with both sides unable to break the deadlock.

The goalkeepers on both teams were called into action to make some top-class saves. The game was also marked by some questionable decisions from referee Andre Marriner, who allowed the game to flow without making major interruptions.

However, the match’s free-flowing nature came at a cost, with both teams feeling frustrated by some of the fouls that went unpunished. Many in the South Coast felt that Casemiro should have been sent off for a second yellow card.

The frustrations were even higher after Antony aimed a petulant kick at Alexis MacAllister in the second half.

Antony’s action was prompted by his belief that he had been held back by MacAllister, and the referee had failed to spot it.

He retaliated by lashing out with a kick, which was clearly intentional. His actions were met with widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Antony’s kick could easily have resulted in a red card, which would have left United down to ten men. It would have also resulted in a significant setback for the club’s pursuit of a top-four finish.

The winger’s actions are not the first time that he has found himself at the center of controversy this season. In February, he was given a four-game ban for using discriminatory language towards an opponent during a Europa League match. The incident highlighted the need for more education and awareness around issues of racism and discrimination in football.

United’s manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was quick to condemn Antony’s actions after the match, stating that he did not condone violent behavior on the pitch. He also expressed his disappointment that the referee had not taken stronger action against some of the fouls committed during the match.

The incident has once again raised questions about the role of referees in modern football and the need for greater consistency in decision-making.

Many fans and pundits have called for the introduction of VAR in the Premier League, which would allow officials to review incidents and make more accurate decisions.

However, others argue that VAR has not been successful in reducing controversy and has led to delays in game time.

They also point out that referees should be given more support and training to help them make better decisions on the pitch.

Regardless of the debate around VAR, it is clear that players must take responsibility for their actions on the pitch.

    Antony kicks opponent

Antony’s kick was a clear example of violent behavior that has no place in football. The incident should serve as a reminder to all players of the need to show respect and sportsmanship towards their opponents.

As for Manchester United, the club will need to ensure that their players are held accountable for their actions and that they continue to promote a culture of respect and fair play. With several important matches coming up, including a Europa League final against Villarreal, there is no room for complacency.

The Video Assistant Referee was content with Marriner’s decision to award just a yellow card.

The former Ajax man was then hooked off, with Jadon Sancho taking his place. Brighton’s skipper, Lewis Dunk also got booked in the game.

Antony’s woes were compounded when Luke Shaw handled the ball inside his own penalty area deep into stoppage time, with Mac Allister stepping up to score the resultant penalty.

The defeat meant the Seagulls completed a season double over United and got their revenge for the FA Cup semi-final defeat.

    How Brighton beat Man United

Sports Brief also reported on Brighton getting revenge against United for the FA Cup semi-final loss, with Mac Allister scoring from the spot in the dying seconds.

A classy Seagulls side dominated the possession but lacked a cutting edge until Shaw’s handball deep into injury time gave them a chance to claim all three points.

The result leaves United in fourth place in the Premier League with five games to play – only four points clear of Liverpool, while Brighton are now up to sixth place.

Man Utd lose to Brighton as Mac Allister scores penalty

The Champions League aspirations of Manchester United were dashed when Alexis Mac Allister converted a thrilling extra-time penalty to propel Brighton to sixth place in the Premier League.

Nine minutes after the legal 90 had passed, the World Cup champion of Argentina confidently sent the ball into the top left corner after Luke Shaw was called for a handball following VAR intervention.

Albion’s 1-0 victory in a thrilling match at the Amex Stadium lifts them over Tottenham and Aston Villa, while United now have to keep an eye on fifth-placed Liverpool.

The Seagulls sit just four points behind Jurgen Klopp’s Reds with two games in hand thanks to the stunning late twist.

Brighton’s success partially avenges the spot-kick heartache they suffered at the hands of their opponents in the FA Cup semi-finals just 11 days ago and completes a league double over United.

The Seagulls also smashed their club-record top-flight points tally — moving on to 55, three more than they managed in the the 42-game 1981-82 season.

Antony and Anthony Martial wasted golden opportunities for United, who still have work to do to reach European football’s premier club competition next term following a painful climax.

Prior to Mac Allister’s last-gasp breakthrough, Kaoru Mitoma missed the Seagulls’ best opening of a feisty encounter, thumping the ball into the head of David De Gea during a rapid start.

United keeper De Gea was visibly dazed by the unconventional stop but was deemed fit to carry on following on-field treatment.

With plenty at stake in the battle for continental qualification, players from both sides clashed in a heated second half after Antony’s crude challenge on Mac Allister sparked a mass brawl.

United travelled to Sussex with bitter memories of Wembley still lingering in the minds of the high-flying hosts.

The frantic opening exchanges suggested there would be no repeat of that cagey 0-0 draw, with both sides passing up glorious chances.

Antony fired wide after Bruno Fernandes’ pass carved open Albion’s defence inside two minutes, before Mitoma intercepted an under-hit Victor Lindelof pass and raced clear only to thump his effort into the face of De Gea with Julio Enciso awaiting a tap-in.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi overcame the illness which led to the cancellation of his pre-match press conference to take his place on the touchline.

The Italian was his usual animated self and passionately appealed for a penalty when Mitoma went to ground following minimal contact from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s outstretched leg.

United, who were thrashed 4-0 on this ground last May, remained dangerous on the counter-attack and caused constant issues for the home defence as they created the best first-half chances.

Casemiro headed narrowly over for Erik Ten Hag’s men, while Brighton keeper Jason Steele produced smart saves to deny low efforts from Marcus Rashford and Martial.

Travelling fans had once again unveiled a ‘Glazers out’ banner ahead of kick-off as ongoing protests against their club’s ownership continue.

Yet the sold-out away end would have taken plenty of encouragement from the opening 45 minutes.

Rashford tumbled easily inside the Brighton box just after the restart before the hosts enjoyed a period of dominance, albeit initially creating little.

Casemiro, who was earlier booked for scything down Mac Allister, escaped a second yellow in the 65th minute for a foul on the same player.

Home fans then felt further aggrieved when Mitoma went down in the penalty area for a second time, before tempers flared after Brazilian Antony chopped down fellow South American Mac Allister, leading to a booking for the United man and Brighton captain Lewis Dunk.

Casemiro drilled over, while Seagulls substitute Solly March, who missed the decisive spot-kick at Wembley, lashed wide and De Gea superbly denied Moises Caicedo as an enthralling affair looked set end all square.

But Shaw inexplicably handled a corner and after referee Andre Marriner consulted the pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot, Mac Allister thumped home.
