High expectations and family – Alfred Duncan explains why he snubbed return to Black Stars

Former Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan has disclosed that he rejected offers to return to the Black Stars, despite being approached by the team’s last two head coaches.

Duncan, who currently plays for Venezia, made his debut for Ghana in 2016 during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique. However, in 2019, he decided to retire from international football.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Duncan explained that he had already made up his mind about stepping away from the national team and found it difficult to change his decision

“Yes, I think for the past two years, the two new coaches both reached out to me and wanted to work with me. But for me, it was very difficult to go back to the national team because the expectations were really high. I had already made a decision, and I was stable with where I wanted to be,” he said.

Duncan further cited personal reasons, particularly his desire to spend more time with his family, as a key factor in his decision.

“During the international break, I am able to spend more time with my family. That was one of the best decisions I ever made because I had less time with them before. Making that decision really helped me a lot, so I wasn’t willing to go back and abandon that situation,” he added.

The 30-year-old midfielder made a total of nine appearances for Ghana before retiring from international football.
