Jarred Gillett’s every move will be captured by a “RefCam,” marking the Premier League’s debut of this technology during Monday night’s game between Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
Gillett will sport a head-mounted device that integrates seamlessly with the standard referee communications system.
This innovative setup aims to offer viewers the referee’s perspective on decision-making processes and interactions with players throughout the match.
The video will not be broadcast live but will be used later in the year as part of a show that the Premier League hopes will offer “further insight and education into the demands of officiating in the Premier League.”
In one of its matches this season between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg, the Bundesliga utilised a “RefCam” to offer viewers insights into the referee’s viewpoint and the Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) role in a 26-minute documentary.
Before transitioning to English football, Jarred Gillett assumed a similar role five years ago during his last Australian A-League match between Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar, garnering widespread acclaim.
His performance was documented, and pivotal segments highlighting his game management and decision-making were subsequently broadcast.
