Amorim rejects moves to Liverpool and West Ham, opting to stay with Sporting

Ruben Amorim reassured Sporting CP fans of his commitment to coaching the club for the upcoming season.

Despite being linked with Liverpool following Jürgen Klopp’s departure announcement, the Portuguese tactician also engaged in discussions with West Ham last month.

Speaking after Sporting clinched the Portuguese league title with two games to spare on Sunday, Amorim said, “I stay, I have a contract with Sporting.

I dedicate it [the league title] to all the Sporting fans. Now we will try to go for a third [domestic] league crown since he took over].”

Amorim, aged 39, previously expressed uncertainty about his future at Sporting, stating that he couldn’t guarantee his continuation at the club for the next season.

Leading Sporting since March 2020, he is under contract with the Lisbon-based team until June 2026, with a €20 million ($21 million) release clause applicable for foreign clubs.

Meanwhile, Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres, despite only being at the club for one season, cannot assure his stay beyond the upcoming summer.

The Sweden international has garnered interest from both Premier League and La Liga clubs, having scored 27 goals and provided nine assists in 31 league appearances since his €21 million transfer from Coventry City last summer.

“Stay next season? This is football; it’s normal; I can’t promise anything,” Gyökeres said. “I would like to stay, I really like being here; I wouldn’t mind, but in football, everything happens very quickly and we have to adapt. I can’t make so many predictions; it’s difficult. There are still games left this season; then we’ll see.”

Gyökeres, 25, under contract with Sporting until June 2028, has a €90 million release clause.
