Kylian Mbappe has made a decision to remain with PSG for the upcoming 2023–24 season, according to reports.
This development marks a new turn in the ongoing Mbappe saga. Despite previously indicating to PSG that he didn’t plan to extend his contract beyond 2024, he now seems set to stay for at least one more season.
The club had attempted to offload Mbappe to avoid losing him without compensation.
However, a recent report from Le Parisien states that the 24-year-old has communicated his intention to remain with PSG and not make a move to Real Madrid or any other club this summer.
This decision is likely to disappoint PSG, which was aiming to avoid losing him as a free agent next year. Initially left out of the squad for the Asian tour, Mbappe’s plans to leave seemed evident.
Nevertheless, he has now informed PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, of his commitment to stay and fulfil the final year of his contract.
Mbappe’s choice to stay for another year means that he will potentially join Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer of 2024.
PSG had paid a substantial €180 million to acquire him from Monaco in 2017, so not securing a transfer fee for his departure raises concerns both in terms of prestige and financial implications.
It remains to be seen how PSG will react to this news. The question arises whether they will reintegrate him into the squad or keep him isolated, considering his potential contributions to the team.
There have been reports suggesting that Luis Enrique’s team might even be willing to bench him for the entire 2023–24 season. The impact of these latest revelations on the situation is yet to be determined.
