‘I don’t think Tony Yeboah wanted to be captain at all cost’- MND Jawula

Former Ghana Football Association Chairman, Alhaji MND Jawula seems to disagree with the notion that two of Ghana’s former players, Abedi Ayew Pele and Anthony Yeboah were fighting over the captaincy.

After almost three decades when Ghana failed to extend its African Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles from four to five, the discussion about the captaincy saga between three times African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele and two times Bundesliga top scorer Anthony Yeboah does not seem to be ending.

Anthony Yeboah, some weeks ago, revealed that he was hurt when the Black Stars handlers made Anthony Baffoe the captain in the absence of Abedi Pele in the 1992 AFCON final against Cote d’Ivoire but insisted that he had no problem with Abedi Pele.

Wadding in on the discussion, the new Chairman for the Ghana Premier League Board in an interview on GTV sports+’s ‘Beyond The Pitch’ said there was nothing like a rift between the two.

“People used to say these things but I never saw it. Both Tony Yeboah and Abedi Pele told me that their wives were very good friends and it’s true; their wives were good friends.”

“People have a way that they put things but I don’t think Tony Yeboah wanted to be captain at all cost because he had a lot of respect for Abedi Pele and everyone played their style. One was a tremendous striker and the other was a tremendous midfielder.” MND Jawula said.
