Fan was not arrested, he only assaulted Chris Hughton verbally – GFA clarifies

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has denied allegations that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton was physically assaulted by an upset fan after Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in its opening AFCON game.

Following Ghana’s 2-1 defeat, reports on social media suggested that Hughton had been physically assaulted and that it took the intervention of diplomats to defuse the situation.

However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) clarified that the alleged incident was exaggerated and blown out of proportion.

“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach or leave the job. There was no physical confrontation and certainly no arrest was made,” Citinews wrote.

Ghana’s Black Stars currently find themselves at the bottom of Group B with no points after the opening round of matches in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Their next match is against Egypt on Thursday, January 18, 2024, as they aim to bounce back and improve their standing in the tournament.
