Former Asante Kotoko defender Eric Donkor has disclosed that he was once approached to participate in match-fixing during his tenure at the club.
Donkor revealed that the club involved was struggling to avoid relegation and sought to manipulate a match result in their favor.
However, he firmly rejected the offer. Speaking to Akoma FM, Donkor emphasised his integrity by refusing to engage in any form of match-fixing.
“During my playing days, I recall being asked to personally fix a match. It involved a team that was in the relegation zone and was an away game for Kotoko but I declined it. Based on the results I received, I’m sure they called a few other players as well.
I told them I wasn’t ready, so I didn’t interact with them too much. I did that because I value my integrity so much and those who know me personally know that.” Eric Donkor explained.
Eric Donkor contends that the involvement of betting companies with local teams inevitably influences outcomes. Additionally, he believes that inadequate player compensation increases susceptibility to match-fixing proposals.
