Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reaffirmed his commitment to the club despite speculation linking him to the role of England manager.
The speculation comes in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s resignation following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Howe, who has been touted as a top contender for the England position, expressed his dedication to Newcastle United, highlighting his satisfaction and support at the club.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle from the Magpies’ training camp in Germany, Howe emphasized his contentment and the strong bond he shares with the club.
“It is an unbelievable football club. I’m very, very proud to be the manager,” Howe stated. “I love the supporters, I love the players, I love the staff. So really, there has been no thought in my mind on anything else and I have been very committed to the job here.”
Howe, appointed in November 2021 after the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise, steering them clear of relegation and achieving a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, securing a Champions League spot. He signed a “multi-year” contract extension last summer, which underscored his long-term vision for the club.
Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, has indicated that the club is resolute in keeping Howe, further solidifying the manager’s position amidst the England speculation.
Regarding the upcoming season, Howe expressed confidence about starting as Newcastle’s manager. “Of course that is my expectation because I am the manager of Newcastle and I am very proud to be,” he said. “But as I said, it is all about the environment I am working in. As long as that is one where I feel I can give my best, then absolutely, we will crack on and I am looking forward to next season.”
Newcastle’s first match of the 2024-25 season is scheduled against Southampton on August 17. Howe’s commitment remains unwavering, with a clear goal to win trophies and bring joy to the supporters.
The England Football Association (FA) will need to appoint a successor for Southgate, with an interim manager taking charge for England’s Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.
“My commitment is unwavering. I am determined to win a trophy for the football club – that is in my psyche every day. I want to see joy in the supporters. I want to bring that to them, hopefully,” Howe added.
