Bournemouth have reportedly placed a £70 million valuation on forward Antoine Semenyo, amid growing interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United, and other Premier League giants, according to the i Paper.
The 25-year-old has been in outstanding form this season, becoming a key player for the Cherries and a fan favorite at the Vitality Stadium.
His impressive performances have seen him register nine goals and five assists across all competitions, attracting the attention of clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is said to be an admirer of Semenyo and is keen on exploring the possibility of signing him. However, Bournemouth’s strong campaign has positioned them for a potential European qualification, making them determined to hold onto their top talents.
Despite interest from multiple clubs, Bournemouth are firm on their stance and will not entertain offers below their valuation.
On the international stage, Semenyo recently made an impact for the Black Stars.
He was instrumental in Ghana’s victories over Chad and Madagascar, scoring the opening goal in Ghana’s 5-0 win against Chad on March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, before earning a starting spot in the match against Madagascar three days later.
Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third-round clash against AFC Wimbledon, set for Tuesday, has been postponed due to flooding at the League Two club’s stadium.
AFC Wimbledon reported that heavy overnight rain caused “extensive” flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, making the stadium unfit for the 19:45 BST kickoff.
The match will now be rescheduled. AFC Wimbledon reached the third round after beating Bromley and Premier League side Ipswich Town on penalties.
Newcastle, last season’s finalists, entered the competition in the second round, where they also required a penalty shootout to defeat Nottingham Forest.
Anthony Gordon’s late equaliser salvaged a 1-1 draw for Newcastle United against Bournemouth, dampening the hosts’ 125th-anniversary celebrations in the Premier League on Sunday.
Bournemouth initially took the lead through Marcus Tavernier in the first half, but Gordon struck in the 76th minute, converting a cross from substitute Harvey Barnes at the back post to ensure Newcastle earned a well-deserved point.
With this draw, Newcastle advanced to four points from their opening two matches of the season, while Bournemouth followed up their opening draw at Nottingham Forest with another stalemate.
Bournemouth nearly secured a dramatic late victory when Dango Ouattara found the back of the net in stoppage time.
However, his effort was ruled out for handball after a VAR check, much to the frustration of the home fans.
Ouattara had risen powerfully for the header, but the review revealed the ball had made contact with the top of his arm, nullifying the goal.
Despite Bournemouth’s spirited effort, it was Newcastle who looked more likely to grab a winner in the closing stages.
Bournemouth’s goalkeeper, Neto, made several crucial saves to deny Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and Dan Burn’s header.
Bournemouth’s lead came after Antoine Semenyo dispossessed Joelinton in midfield and weaved past three defenders before setting up Tavernier for a tap-in.
Semenyo, who struck the crossbar earlier in the first half, almost registered another assist in the 64th minute, but his pass was misfired by a sliding Evanilson at the back post.
Evanilson, Bournemouth’s record signing, was making his debut as one of five changes from the previous week’s lineup.
However, his contributions were limited, with two other shots on goal comfortably handled by Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope. Evanilson was substituted after 72 minutes.
Founded in 1899,Bournemouth have enjoyedtheir best period in the last decade, with their initial Premier League promotion coming in 2015.
Newcastle Unitedhave announced that midfielder Sandro Tonali may make his return to competitive play for their match against Tottenham on September 1, following the end of his 10-month suspension for violating gambling regulations in Italy.
Tonali, 24, received a ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October 2023.
After transferring to the Premier League, he also faced a two-month suspended ban from the English Football Association (FA) for breaching betting rules.
Newcastle shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that, “Sandro Tonali will be available for selection on Wednesday, August 28, following the end of his ten-month suspension from competitive football.”
As part of a plea deal with the FIGC, Tonali will undergo treatment for gambling issues and participate in educational talks about his experience over the next eight months.
His cooperation with the investigation by the FIGC and the Italian prosecutor’s office helped reduce his potential suspension from three years.
In England, Tonali’s ban was suspended due to his cooperation and self-reporting, as determined by an independent FA regulatory commission.
Signed from AC Milan in July 2023 for a fee of approximately €70 million ($74.7m), Tonali has not played forNewcastle since shortly before his suspension began.
Before the ban, he featured in 11 matches and scored once.
The 22 year old is reported injured and would likely miss Southampton’s opening game of the season on Saturday, August 17 against Newcastle at the St. James’ Park.
Sulemana picked up an undisclosed injury at the time of writing in Southampton’s 2-0 loss to Oxford United and Southampton manager Martin Russell spoke about Sulemana’s situation.
“Kamaldeen will be out for three weeks” Russell stated after the loss with the news coming ahead of Southampton’s preseason game against Lazio on Wednesday, August 9.
Southampton will face Spanish La Liga team Getafe on Saturday, August 10, following their match against Lazio, before kicking off their new Premier League season against Newcastle.
The Saints are set to make their return to the Premier League after being relegated at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
This latest update comes amid a series of injury issues for Sulemana, who has struggled with health problems during his time with both French Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes and Southampton.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reaffirmed his commitment to the club despite speculation linking him to the role of England manager.
The speculation comes in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s resignation following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Howe, who has been touted as a top contender for the England position, expressed his dedication to Newcastle United, highlighting his satisfaction and support at the club.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle from the Magpies’ training camp in Germany, Howe emphasized his contentment and the strong bond he shares with the club.
“It is an unbelievable football club. I’m very, very proud to be the manager,” Howe stated. “I love the supporters, I love the players, I love the staff. So really, there has been no thought in my mind on anything else and I have been very committed to the job here.”
Howe, appointed in November 2021 after the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise, steering them clear of relegation and achieving a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, securing a Champions League spot. He signed a “multi-year” contract extension last summer, which underscored his long-term vision for the club.
Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, has indicated that the club is resolute in keeping Howe, further solidifying the manager’s position amidst the England speculation.
Regarding the upcoming season, Howe expressed confidence about starting as Newcastle’s manager. “Of course that is my expectation because I am the manager of Newcastle and I am very proud to be,” he said. “But as I said, it is all about the environment I am working in. As long as that is one where I feel I can give my best, then absolutely, we will crack on and I am looking forward to next season.”
Newcastle’s first match of the 2024-25 season is scheduled against Southampton on August 17. Howe’s commitment remains unwavering, with a clear goal to win trophies and bring joy to the supporters.
The England Football Association (FA) will need to appoint a successor for Southgate, with an interim manager taking charge for England’s Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.
“My commitment is unwavering. I am determined to win a trophy for the football club – that is in my psyche every day. I want to see joy in the supporters. I want to bring that to them, hopefully,” Howe added.
Liverpool hasset their sights on Anthony Gordon, the winger from Newcastle United, as one of their initial signings for the post-Jurgen Klopp era, according to the Daily Star.
Gordon, aged 23, has consistently dazzled with his performances under Eddie Howe’s management, earning his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
With a potential Euro 2024 appearance on the horizon, Gordon’s displays have piqued the interest of Liverpool, despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part ways with the player they acquired from Everton for £45 million last August.
However, Newcastle is anticipated to offload a couple of their key players during the transfer window to adhere to profit and sustainability regulations.
Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimarães have already been linked with lucrative moves, heightening the pressure on Howe, especially given Gordon’s impressive record of 10 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.
Newcastle’s resolve to retain Gordon would be severely tested with an offer approaching £100 million.
Despite this, Newcastle’s current sixth position in the Premier League standings and their aspirations for European football next season provide a strong foundation for their efforts toretain Gordon’s services.
West Ham United winger Kudus Mohammed has revealed that his debutPremier League goal holds a special place in his heart.
The former Ajax player considers this goal his favourite, emphasising its significance as it opened the door for many more goals to follow.
“The first one is always special. It’s like the key to the lock because it opens everything. So yeah, the first one was really special, and getting a point for the team was also more important. So I’ll go for the first one,” he told the Premier League media.
Kudus made a memorable entrance into the Premier League with a spectacular volley in West Ham’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in November 2023.
His goal, alongside Lucas Paqueta’s impressive strikes, earned him the club’s goal of the month accolade.
Since then,Kudus hasmaintained his form, adding six more goals and five assists in 31 Premier League appearances, bringing his total contribution to 7 goals and 5 assists.
Ghanaian striker Mohammed Kudus showcased his scoring prowess once again for West Ham United, netting his 7th league goal of the season in a thrilling match against Newcastle United.
Kudus, known for his lethal left foot, scored just before halftime to give West Ham a 2-1 lead.
The momentum continued in the second half as Kudus set up Jarrod Bowen, extending West Ham’s lead to 3-1.
However, Newcastle mounted a remarkable comeback, with Harvey Barnes scoring twice, including the winning goal, to secure a stunning 4-3 victory.
Despite the loss, Kudus’ performance was noteworthy, bringing his total goals for the season to 13.
The defeat keeps West Ham in 7th place in the league table.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing charges from the English Football Association (FA) for alleged misconduct related to breaches of the federation’s betting regulations.
“It’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023,” the FA said in a statement.
The Football Association (FA) has set a deadline of April 5 for Tonali to respond to the charges brought against him.
Tonali, who transferred to Newcastle from AC Milan in July last year, faced a 10-month ban from football in October 2023 after being found guilty of betting on matches in Italy, following an inquiry by prosecutors in Turin.
His agent, Giuseppe Riso, had previously stated that Tonali struggles with a “gambling addiction.”
In an official statement, Newcastle acknowledged the charges against Tonali and affirmed that the player continues to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations, receiving unwavering support from the club.
Despite the allegations, Tonali has featured in 11 matches forNewcastle across various competitions this season, finding the net once.
Newcastle United is eyeing Benfica’s sports director, Rui Pedro Braz, as a potential successor for Dan Ashworth, according to reports from The Times.
Manchester United has reportedly made a formal offer for Ashworth as part of their ongoing restructuring led by new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave by Newcastle after expressing his desire to join Old Trafford.
Reports suggest that Ashworth’s gardening leave could last up to 20 months, although Newcastle may consider shortening it for an additional fee, estimated to be between £15m and £20m.
Meanwhile, Braz has gained attention for his successful tenure at Benfica, where he led the club to win the Portuguese title in his first full season in charge.
Notably, Braz orchestrated significant transfer deals, including Enzo Fernández’s move to Chelsea for €121million and Darwin Núñez’s transfer to Liverpool for €100million.
Other candidates being considered to replace Ashworth include formerTottenham, Monaco, and RB Leipzig sporting director Paul Mitchell, West Ham technical director Tim Steidten, and Tiago Pinto, who recently left his position at Roma.
Eddie Howe expressed his concern after Anthony Gordon sustained a knee injury during Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat at Chelsea.
Gordon, who has contributed 10 goals and five assists across all competitions this season, has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers and is being considered for an England call-up ahead of Euro 2024.
With Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate present at Stamford Bridge, Gordon was forced off the pitch after just 36 minutes. Howe appeared downbeat when asked about the 23-year-old’s condition and did not provide much optimism regarding his injury.
He said: “It was strange. There was no mechanism or moment when he felt it, it was just there in the game.
“According to Anthony at half-time, he was in quite a bit of pain. We don’t quite know how bad that is yet.
“I think it was quite early in the game but there was no moment where he felt the injury, just a pain was there.
“So we sent someone over because he didn’t look like he was moving right. And then eventually he succumbed to the injury.
“He’s in a bit of pain but it’s not looking too good. We’ll wait and see.
“It was a huge moment to lose him, given what he has done this season. It was a psychological blow.”
After Alexander Isak cancelled out Nicolas Jackson’s early strike just before half-time to level the score, the Blues began to dominate proceedings in the second half. Goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk sealed the three points for Chelsea, despite Jacob Murphy’s spectacular consolation goal.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, 46, accepted that his side could have no complaints about their seventh loss in nine Premier League away outings, conceding 24 goals in that run.
He added: “It’s a similar feeling over the last few months on the road.
“We know with the quality of players to defend better than that. It was not a bad performance, just inconsistent at times.
“There’s promise that we can hit the heights but we’re not doing it enough.”
Mykhailo Mudryk scored a stunning solo goal as Chelsea kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe via the Premier League alive with a 3-2 victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
With the score at 2-1 late in the second half, the result was still in the balance. However, a moment of brilliance from substitute Mudryk tilted the game decisively in Chelsea’s favor.
He intercepted Conor Gallagher’s pass at top speed, dribbled past defender Fabian Schar, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly finished to secure the win for Chelsea.
The victory marked a significant step forward for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who have struggled to close out balanced games in the past.
Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea with a clever backheeled goal, before Alexander Isak equalized for Newcastle at the end of the first half.
Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead with a brilliant strike from distance, before Mudryk’s goal looked to have sealed the win. Jacob Murphy’s superb 90th-minute goal made for a nervy ending, but Chelsea held on for a deserved victory.
Chelsea, currently in 11th place, are still in the running for European qualification through the league. Victory over Newcastle took them to within four points of seventh-place West Ham with a game in hand. However, consistency has been a challenge for Chelsea this season under Pochettino.
Premier League team Newcastle United has released a touching documentary chronicling the life of the late Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu.
Atsu tragically lost his life in the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey on February 18, 2023.
A year after his passing, Newcastle United, where Atsu made a significant impact during his career, travelled to Ghana to document the life of their former player.

His former manager, Hay Yartey, shares stories of Atsu’s resilience, highlighting how he overcame challenges and earned a move abroad to Porto in Portugal.
The documentary delves into Atsu’s personal life, capturing intimate moments between him and his wife, Marie-Claire Rupio.
Marie-Claire recounts their love story, from their initial encounter in Portugal to the cherished memories they created together.
She reflects on the depth of the loss and how she is navigating life after the passing of her beloved husband.
The narrative tragically shifts to Atsu’s untimely death and the lasting impact he made through his philanthropic efforts.
Although Atsu passed away at the age of 31, he left an enduring legacy on the global stage, representing the Black Stars in 65 international matches.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and claimed the lives of over 50,000 including Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu.
In honouring his memory, Newcastle FC, a club Atsu used to play for, has paid tribute to the fallen hero.
In a post on X on February 6, 2024, Newcastle noted that the actions of Christian Atsu continues to linger in the heart of many he came in contact with.
According to the club, Atsu was an incredible person and will forever be in their thoughts.
“One year ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. An incredible person who is fondly remembered by everyone at Newcastle United. Our thoughts are forever with Christian’s family and friends. Oh he is so wonderful.”
In May 2017, Atsu signed a four-year deal to join Newcastle permanently for £6.2 million from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has revealed to UK outlet The Athletic that she still sends WhatsApp messages to her deceased husband.
She admitted to questioning Atsu at times about why he is no longer alive and also mentioned messaging him when their children inquired about him.
Rupio, who is Portuguese, expressed that she does not have a specific coping mechanism and emphasised the mental challenges she faces, stating that she simply tries to navigate through each day.
“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” says Claire. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.
“Sometimes I message Christian on WhatsApp; I just need to let it out,” she says. “‘Why are you not here?’ or maybe one of the kids needs him.”
Narrating how she received the news of her husband’s passing, she said Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, informed her at 3 a.m. while sobbing.
“It was around 3 am on Saturday, and when I saw Nana’s name come up on my phone.
“I picked up and he was just crying. He said, ‘I’m so sorry’, and he couldn’t say anything more.”
On Friday, March 17, former Black Stars player, Christian Atsu was laid to rest.
The funeral service was held at the forecourt of the State House. Several personalities were in attendance as well as members of the general public.
Atsu’s death continues to affect the lives of many who he positively had an impact on.
Newcastle handed Aston Villa their first home Premier League defeat in almost a year, securing a remarkable 3-1 victory.
Fabian Schar scored twice in a span of four first-half minutes, and an own goal from Alex Moreno in the second half sealed the Magpies’ win.
Ollie Watkins managed a consolation goal for Villa, who suffered their first league loss at Villa Park since February of the previous year.
Despite remaining in fourth place, Villa has played more games than league leaders Liverpool and rivals Manchester City. Tottenham could catch up if they win against Brentford on Wednesday. The Magpies, on the other hand, had faced a slump with six losses in their last seven league games but climbed to seventh with this crucial win, although they still trail Villa by 11 points.
Newcastle had initially dominated Villa in the season opener with a 5-1 win, but the fortunes of both teams changed since then. Emery’s side had been strong at home, with only Sheffield United previously managing to secure a point at Villa Park this season. In contrast, the Magpies had struggled away from home, securing only one victory.
The visitors took control early in the match, creating chances, and exposing gaps in Villa’s defense. Jacob Murphy’s precise delivery found Anthony Gordon, but Emi Martinez made a crucial save. The Magpies capitalized on their dominance, with Schar scoring two goals in quick succession from corners.
Villa failed to recover after the break, and Miguel Almiron, who replaced the injured Alexander Isak, set up Murphy for a third goal with an unfortunate own goal from Moreno. Despite Newcastle’s apparent control, Villa fought back, and Watkins scored his 50th Premier League goal with a header. However, a VAR decision denied him another goal shortly after, allowing Newcastle to hold on for the victory.
The win lifted Newcastle to seventh place, while Villa, in fourth, faces the risk of being overtaken by Tottenham in the standings.
Another Premier League player has fallen victim to a burglary, as Newcastle star Joelinton was robbed during Saturday’s match against Manchester City.
The Brazilian, recovering from a thigh problem, and his family were in the stands at St. James’ Park witnessing the Magpies’ heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the reigning champions.
However, their ordeal worsened after the match.
According to The Daily Mail, Joelinton received an alert during the game indicating that intruders were entering his home. Police were immediately notified, and a helicopter was dispatched to address the situation.
In a statement, Northumbria Police confirmed that the thieves had fled Joelinton’s residence in Darras Hall.
They said in a statement on Sunday: “Shortly before 7.30 p.m. yesterday [Saturday], police received a call from a concerned homeowner who reported that three men were inside their home in Darras Hall.
Police were deployed to the scene; however, those alleged to be involved had fled the scene. Enquires remain ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact us via 101 or the ‘Report’ pages of our website, quoting log NP-20240113-0835.”
Contrary to Joelinton’s case, he and his family were fortunately not at home during the burglary, as highlighted in the statement. However, Saturday’s opponent, Jack Grealish, wasn’t as fortunate.
On Boxing Day, the City winger experienced a burglary at his Cheshire home, resulting in the theft of £1 million ($1.27 million) worth of jewelry. Unfortunately, Grealish’s fiancée and family were present during the raid.
This incident adds to a series of burglaries targeting Premier League players in recent months, with Kevin De Bruyne, Victor Lindelof, and Joao Cancelo (during his time at City) all falling victim within the past year.
While Joelinton’s family was spared the ordeal of facing a terrifying break-in, investigations will persist to identify the alleged culprits.
On the field, Joelinton will be focused on regaining full fitness, as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side, following a defeat to City, finds itself just one point away from the bottom half of the Premier League.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Djordje Petrovic emerged as the heroes for Chelsea, propelling the team to the Carabao Cup semi-finals in a match filled with late drama at the Bridge.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Mudryk equalized Callum Wilson’s opener, forcing the tie into penalties. Kieran Trippier’s miss had already given Chelsea an advantage, and Petrovic’s exceptional save against Matt Ritchie secured the victory, with Chelsea flawlessly converting all their penalties.
The outcome was well-deserved for Chelsea, dominating the game despite falling behind when Wilson capitalized on defensive errors to put Newcastle ahead in the 16th minute. Before the break, Conor Gallagher had hit the crossbar, and Raheem Sterling had two close chances to level the score.
The trend continued in the second half, with Nicolas Jackson missing a shot and Sterling testing Martin Dubravka with a strong attempt.
Debutant Christopher Nkunku came on, but it was another substitute, Mudryk, who sent the match to penalties in stoppage time. Mudryk capitalized on a Kieran Trippier mistake with composure and precision.
As Mudryk converted the fourth spot-kick for Chelsea, Ritchie needed to score, but Petrovic, making his third Chelsea appearance, had different plans.
Chelsea will discover their semi-final opponents after the Liverpool vs. West Ham match tomorrow evening. Middlesbrough and Fulham also advanced tonight.
AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has firmly stated that he had no prior knowledge of Sandro Tonali’s involvement in sports betting last season.
The defensive midfielder was transferred to Newcastle United from Milan for a significant fee during the summer window.
However, it was later disclosed that Tonali had been placing bets on football games, including those in which he was directly involved. In October, he received a ten-month ban, leading to some accusations that AC Milan may have been aware of his issues.
Pioli told reporters, “No I didn’t know anything about Sandro’s problem.
“He was polite, respected, gave respect to others and was a sensible boy. Even if I think I have a close, open relationship with a player, I don’t only talk about football. But what they do outside, I don’t know everything about them.”
“Well, at the moment they signed him, it was a good deal; they signed a great deal and what happened after was something no one could have expected.
“Tonali, I am very close to him. When he was with us, he was a positive lad, always showing good will and application. He has fallen within something delicate. We are close to him and I hope this experience can be useful for him.
Everton showcased yet another impressive team performance, securing a 3-0 victory against Newcastle United at Goodison Park.
Dwight McNeil’s skillful left foot, described as a “paintbrush,” opened the scoring 11 minutes from the end, setting the stage for Everton’s triumph. Abdoulaye Doucouré added a second goal seven minutes later, marking his fifth strike of the campaign.
In stoppage time, substitute Beto sealed the win with a third goal.
This victory propelled Everton past Luton Town, lifting them out of the relegation zone. Without the contested 10-point deduction, the win would have seen Sean Dyche’s side climb into the top half of the Premier League table. The Club has officially appealed the deduction.
Manager Sean Dyche made strategic changes, with Seamus Coleman returning from injury and Dominic Calvert-Lewin rejoining the lineup. Despite missing James Garner due to illness and placing Beto on the bench, Everton’s altered lineup showcased a successful shift in shape and strategy.
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has been sidelined for four months due to a shoulder injury sustained during the match against Manchester United.
The 31-year-old England goalkeeper injured himself while diving for a shot in the second half of the 1-0 victory at St James’ Park. As a result of this setback, Pope will be unable to play for the next four months.
His absence adds to the existing list of injured players for Newcastle, which includes Callum Wilson and Dan Burn, among others.
Toon boss Eddie Howe said: “We anticipate he’ll be operated on — there’s no doubt he needs an operation — so he will be out for a period of time, we think around four months.
“It is the same shoulder [as his previous injury] but a different part of the shoulder. There was no reason for that happening.
“He’s had a couple of appointments, visited specialists. I am awaiting final news on what is going to happen.
"Nick has had a couple of appointments visiting specialists, we are awaiting final news on what’s going to happen with him. There's no doubt he will need an operation so he will be out for a period of time. It is a big blow to us." pic.twitter.com/7cYp2gtrQI
“The operation hasn’t happened yet but we are thinking roughly around four months. So it is a big blow to us but one that we expected after the game. As soon as you see the dislocation, we were fearing the worst.”
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, who joined the team in the summer of 2022, has been a key player, making 62 appearances and featuring in all 14 Premier League games this season. Pope has been impressive, keeping six clean sheets in the current campaign.
He said: “I think he is going to be a massive loss, no matter how long he is out.
“In some matches this season, he has single-handedly kept us in games.
“When a team goes one-on-one he will pull off a ‘worldie’ save and we will end up winning the game. He is that difference you need sometimes at the back.
“But that is not to say our other goalkeepers can’t step up now. It is their opportunity to shine and that is what football is all about.”
Newcastle take on Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday as they look to stay within touching distance of the top four.
Eddie Howe asserted that Newcastle must adopt a mindset of being up against the odds, particularly in the wake of an unfortunate VAR decision against Paris Saint-Germain.
In a determined tone during his pre-match press conference, Howe criticised the perceived injustice of a VAR call penalising Tino Livramento for handball when a cross from Ousmane Dembele made contact with his elbow via his torso.
The subsequent penalty, dispatched by Kylian Mbappe, resulted in an equalizer for PSG.
Looking ahead to their Premier League encounter against Manchester United at St James’ Park on Saturday, Howe issued a rallying cry to both the Newcastle players and fans.
The manager emphasised the need for resilience in the face of adversity, framing the situation as a collective challenge that requires unity and determination from the entire team and its supporters.
Howe said: “We have to try and use it as motivation. I don’t know if that feeling has to be injustice, but if that helps certain players reach their full potential for this game, I’m all for that. I always want the sense that we are against everybody outside of Newcastle.
“That helps us. It’s a good mentality to have, that we are competing against everybody else. It has certainly served us well to this point so if it helps the players, great. I don’t think I had to develop [that attitude] strategically. I think it has happened [naturally].”
In the aftermath of their Champions League misfortune, Eddie Howe has once again endeavoured to rally his team and its supporters, urging them to adopt a siege mentality.
It is important to acknowledge that, despite their recent challenges, Howe’s side has experienced favourable refereeing decisions in the Premier League this season, notably against Wolves and Arsenal.
Looking forward to their upcoming clash against Manchester United, both teams aim to put aside the disappointments of midweek Champions League encounters.
Newcastle, currently one point behind their opponents, aspires for a performance reminiscent of their earlier 3-0victory at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.
The match holds the promise of an intense battle as both sides seek to rebound from recent setbacks and secure a positive result in the Premier League.
VAR official Tomasz Kwiatkowski, who suggested a contentious penalty review during Paris St-Germain’s Champions League match against Newcastle United, will not be included in the officiating team for Wednesday’s game between Real Sociedad and Salzburg.
In the 1-1 draw on Tuesday, PSG players contested a handball as the ball rebounded off Newcastle defender Tino Livramento’s chest and onto his elbow.
Referee Szymon Marciniak, urged by the VAR, checked the pitchside monitor.

Despite rejecting a more plausible penalty earlier, Marciniak awarded a penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time, leading to Kylian Mbappe’s goal that secured a draw for PSG.
Tomasz Kwiatkowski will be replaced by Marco Fritz.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe criticised the penalty decision, contending that Livramento’s hand was not in an unnatural position.
Newcastle secured an impressive victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park with second-half goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon.
Lascelles’ header from Gordon’s cross put Newcastle in the lead on the hour mark, followed by Joelinton capitalizing on a Thiago Silva error just 90 seconds later.
Anthony Gordon sealed the win with his fifth goal of the season, as Chelsea finished the match with 10 men after Reece James received a second yellow card.
The victory moves Newcastle within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham, while Chelsea remains on 16 points.
Levi Colwill will be in the Chelsea squad when they travel to Newcastle on Saturday, however the Blues are still without summer signings Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia.
Colwill had experienced a shoulder injury and wasn’t engaged with the legendary 4-4 draw with Manchester City before the worldwide break.
The protector is back and accessible in front of the excursion to St James’ Park on Saturday evening, however both Nkunku and Lavia stay out.
The two men are as yet holding back to make their Chelsea debuts, and keeping in mind that Nkunku is nearer than Lavia to doing as such, neither one of the wills be on the pitch this end of the week.
‘Colwill indeed, he will be in the crew yet Lavia Nkunku actually out,’ Pochettino told a pre-match public interview on Friday. ‘It is challenging to say since we want to survey them step by step.
‘They are in a great shape. Nkunku a smidgen in front of Lavia, he was getting things done with the gathering last week yet not full recuperation to be important for the crew.’
Wesley Fofana stays out with a serious knee injury and isn’t near a return yet, yet has been out on the grass of the preparation pitch this week.
‘It was ideal to see him run on the grass and to contact the grass,’ said the Chelsea supervisor. ‘Gigantic inspiration for him to be there and for us likewise to see him after quite a while off the pitch, it’s really great for him to feel the grass.’
Nkunku was quite possibly of Chelsea’s greatest giving up the late spring, however Pochettino has cautioned the forward that he faces rivalry to get into the principal group in any event, when he is fit to do as such.
‘He is a phenomenal player that was top scorer in Bundesliga and he can play in various positions,’ he said. ‘Truly misfortune to lose him for the start of the time.
‘Yet, bit by bit we will track down the most ideal way for him to fit in the group. He will find huge contest since his partners are in front of him. He wants to fabricate his structure and be in his best level and afterward contend to with players, it’s a major detriment for him.’
Pep Guardiola accepts Liverpool, Arms stockpile and Tottenham are the three leaders to challenge Manchester City for the Chief Association title this season.
City, who are holding back nothing continuous Head Association title, at present lead the way in the table with 28 focuses from 12 games.
Liverpool, who travel to the Etihad Arena to confront City in Saturday’s initial start up, are a point behind in runner up.
Arms stockpile right now sit third, level on 27 focuses with Liverpool, while Tottenham are fourth with 26 places.
When inquired as to whether he figures Liverpool will be City’s nearest title challengers this season, Guardiola answered: ‘Totally.
‘I figure Armory will be as well. They are so strong. Spikes, even the two losses they have had as of late, I figure they will be there.
‘Chelsea have one game seven days… so four or five competitors are there.
‘Newcastle will perhaps join. Manchester Joined will perhaps join. Numerous things can occur.’
Guardiola added on the Head Association title race: ‘What I realized when I showed up here, the Chief Association goes on and on forever.
‘You thoroughly consider it’s with 10 games to play, yet you can’t unwind in light of the fact that you could be consigned with such countless focuses [to play for].
‘It’s so lengthy. Numerous things will occur. Pose me the inquiry in Spring or April. Numerous things can occur, extraordinary things.
‘Liverpool last season had a ton of issues with regards to injury. They have no Bosses Association this season. Liverpool have forever been there. Perhaps they can make it happen.
‘Liverpool will be competitors 100%. The two groups in last seven eight years have been there.
‘We need to win it on the field and with our kin who will perform.’
The Football Association (FA) has charged Arsenal manager Mikel Artetawith making insulting comments about match officials, as announced on Thursday.
Arteta expressed his frustration, labelling the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on November 4th as embarrassing and disgraceful.
This criticism followed the goal, despite a triple VAR assessment.
“Mikel Arteta has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following comments that he made in media interviews after Arsenal’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday, November 4,” the FA statement said.
“It’s alleged that his comments constitute misconduct as they are insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute.”

Newcastle United is reportedly considering a January move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to sources close to ESPN’s Rob Dawson.
City is anticipating offers for England midfielder Phillips in the upcoming January transfer window, as he has only started one game for the club this season.
Newcastle, looking to reinforce their midfield after the suspension of Sandro Tonali, is among the interested clubs, with Juventus and Bayern Munich also in the mix.

Phillips, a £43 million ($53.6 million) acquisition from Leeds United in 2022, is eager for regular playing time before the Euros in Germany next summer.
Despite his competition, he has struggled to secure a spot in Pep Guardiola’s lineup, starting just four games last season and one this season in the Carabao Cup.
If he remains at City into the new year, he will face increased competition with the return of Kevin De Bruyne from a hamstring injury.
Mikel Arteta expressed his clear dissatisfaction when evaluating Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal.
In the match at St. James’ Park, the Magpies secured a 1-0 victory, with Anthony Gordon scoring in the 64th minute. However, the goal was surrounded by controversy.
VAR spent four minutes reviewing various aspects of the goal, including whether Joe Willock had carried the ball out of play, a potential foul committed by Joelinton on Gabriel Magalhaes, and whether Gordon was in an offside position.
Ultimately, the officials concluded that there was insufficient evidence to disallow the goal, leading to an impassioned outburst from Arteta.
After the game, the Arsenal boss told the BBC: “I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is — there are many reasons for that.
“If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal. Embarrassing what happened, how this goal stands in the Premier League, this league we say is the best in the world.
“I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week.
“When we’re not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.
“The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”
Following the match, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who was unable to clear Willock’s initial cross towards Gordon, also commented on the matter.
He said: “We are all frustrated. My point of view is I saw the ball going out of play. I think it is a foul on Gabriel, he [Joelinton] pushes him on the back and the decision was it wasn’t a foul.
“I don’t think it was supposed to go that way. And in my opinion it was offside. We are very, very disappointed.”
Arsenal experienced their first Premier League defeat of the season at St. James’ Park as Newcastle United secured their fourth consecutive home league victory.
Anthony Gordon, scoring his fourth goal of the campaign and impressing England manager Gareth Southgate, sealed the three points for United. Additionally, it marked the eighth clean sheet in all competitions for the Magpies, solidifying their victory.
Before the match, both teams paid tribute to service personnel, past and present, with a minute’s silence, and both squads donned poppies on their shirts.
In a heated first half that had limited goal-scoring opportunities but plenty of incidents, Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba saw their shots deflected off target for the Gunners. In the 29th minute, a cleverly executed free kick resulted in a header across the goal by Dan Burn, but Callum Wilson fired over, albeit with the flag raised against Burn.
Tempers flared on several occasions during the opening 37 minutes, culminating in a confrontation between players and the two dugouts when Kai Havertz made a reckless challenge on Sean Longstaff, who was left in pain. Referee Stuart Attwell showed a yellow card and subsequently booked Longstaff, Gordon, and Fabian Schär for protesting.
After the incident, Gordon set up Bruno Guimarães, whose shot from outside the box missed the target. Shortly before halftime, Gabriel Martinelli maneuvered into the box, eluding a desperate tackle from Kieran Trippier but shot directly at Nick Pope.
Burn, with an apparent lower back injury, had to be substituted at halftime, replaced by Tino Livramento. The second half continued in a similar manner, with limited scoring opportunities but a tense atmosphere. However, in the 60th minute, Newcastle took the lead.
Joelinton muscled his way through and found substitute Jacob Murphy, who delivered a cross from a tight angle on the right. Fellow substitute Joe Willock did exceptionally well to keep the ball in play near the opposite corner flag and sent it back into the box, where Joelinton deftly set up Gordon for a close-range finish.
Amidst heavy rain, a peculiar VAR check ensued, with three potential infractions – the ball out of play, a foul, and an offside – all considered and ultimately dismissed before the goal was confirmed.
Murphy had to be substituted due to a seemingly aggravated shoulder injury he sustained against Borussia Dortmund, with Matt Ritchie coming on for his 200th appearance for the Magpies.
Eddie Howe, already missing several key players, will hope that neither Murphy nor Burn faces a long-term absence. Nevertheless, he will be without Guimarães for the upcoming weekend’s trip to Bournemouth after the Brazilian received his fifth booking of the campaign late in the match. Despite these challenges, Howe celebrated a second highly impressive win in just four days.
Following Anthony Gordon’s controversial winning goal, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe responded to Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta’s post-match criticism of the refereeing decisions.
Gordon’s fourth goal of the year was initially awarded after three VAR reviews, involving a potential ball out-of-play situation, a foul by Joelinton on Gabriel, and Gordon’s potential offside.
Arteta expressed his frustration with the decision to the media after the game.
Howe disagreed with the Spaniard, as he said [via Shields Gazette]: “We’re stood by the side of the pitch, seeing VAR on the screen but with no pictures. I haven’t seen anything other than what I saw at the time. It looked like a good goal to me.
“Maybe he’s seen something I haven’t. I’ve only seen it with the naked eye, live. I had no idea what was going on with the VAR checks either so we were in the lap of the gods, really waiting like everyone else in the stadium.
“With every check it was going through, you’re thinking they’re going to find something wrong with it. It’s very bizarre to have three VAR checks but the goal was given.”
Arsenal suffered their first loss of the season, dropping them to third place in the standings.
They are currently three points behind defending champions Manchester City and two points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.
AC Milan has publicly denied any prior knowledge of Sandro Tonali’s gambling addiction amid concerns of further repercussions for the Newcastle player.
The 23-year-old Italian international recently faced disciplinary action for violating gambling regulations sanctioned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
As a consequence, he received a 10-month ban from all football-related activities, along with an additional eight months of therapy-assisted rehabilitation.
Furthermore, FIFA has officially ratified this suspension, making it applicable on a global scale.
Tonali’s transfer to Newcastle occurred earlier in the summer from AC Milan for a reported £55 million ($68 million), sparking speculation about whether the Rossoneri were aware of his gambling addiction.
In the midst of these discussions, Newcastle’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, acknowledged the possibility but emphasised that confirming such knowledge is “really difficult.”
“It’s really difficult for me to get into what other clubs do or don’t know,” said Ashworth. “All we can do is look at our own internal investigation and internal process. It’s a really difficult question for me to answer; I just don’t know.”
This prompted the Lombardy Club to release an official statement as a response to Ashworth’s statement.
“We first learned about Tonali’s addiction through media reports and what we know is only what we read. We don’t know anything else.”
The FA have also reportedly started a separate investigation to find out if Tonali continued with his habit after shifting base to the shores of England, as his agent, Giuseppe Riso, admitted that the player was struggling with a gambling addiction.
Tonali will not be available for selection for Newcastle until the end of August 2024 and the club is mulling over bringing in a replacement in the winter transfer window for the midfielder.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed concern about Antony’s recent performances, stating that the Brazilian winger’s levels have noticeably declined.
Antony played the full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup match against Newcastle, following a criticised cameo appearance against Manchester City, where he was involved in an incident with Jeremy Doku.
United suffered a 3-0 loss to Newcastle, and Antony struggled to make an impact.
Ten Hag suggested that external distractions might be influencing Antony’s performance on the pitch.
Ten Hag said: “That is also team, first, and the team is not playing well when we don’t bring him the balls and I am also responsible for that.
But obviously, there was also a lot of noise and that dropped his levels. He can do better but all the players can do better.
“Antony is also a fighter; he has the confidence, he is brave and I am confident he will bring the performance that he is the right player for us.”
Newcastle United secured an impressive Carabao Cup fourth-round victory on Wednesday night at Old Trafford, defeating Manchester United for the first time since 2013. The goals from Miguel Almirón, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock sealed their triumph.
Substitute Almirón scored the opening goal, finishing a well-crafted move initiated by Tino Livramento. Teenager Hall then volleyed in a superb second goal, giving Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable lead at half-time.
Although the hosts made a brief attempt to rally, Willock’s brilliantly taken third goal, in his first start since May, secured Newcastle’s spot in the quarter-finals. They convincingly eliminated the defending champions, who had defeated Newcastle in the 2022/23 final.
Newcastle faced an early setback when Matt Targett was forced off within four minutes, and Almirón was brought on as his replacement. Eddie Howe’s team has been dealing with a series of injuries in recent weeks.
While Casemiro had an early attempt saved by former Manchester United loanee Martin Dúbravka, Newcastle dominated possession early on. Almirón’s delicate touch and precise finish into the far corner extended their lead.
Mason Mount had a chance for a quick response but failed to find the target. Newcastle then added a second goal through Chelsea loanee Hall, who volleyed the ball beautifully into the bottom right-hand corner.
Manchester United made changes at half-time, showing more vigor in the second half. However, just after the hour mark, Willock sealed the victory with a magnificent goal. Despite his recent return from a six-month injury layoff, he showcased his skills by striking a powerful and precise shot into the bottom corner.
Newcastle came close to adding another goal when Sean Longstaff, captaining the team on his 150th appearance for the club, narrowly missed the target. Their place in the quarter-finals was all but confirmed by then.
Sandro Tonali has been handed a 10-month ban for violating betting regulations in Italy, which would typically rule him out for the rest of the 2023–24 Premier League season and Euro 2024.
However, the suspension is still pending final approval, keeping Tonali eligible to play until it is officially ratified.
This approval process might conclude before Newcastle’s match against Wolves on Saturday, and as of now, the 23-year-old midfielder is still part of Eddie Howe’s plans.
Magpies boss Howe told reporters prior to receiving confirmation of Tonali’s ban: “We’ve not had official confirmation as a football club.
We’ve not had anything from the Italian authorities so we are waiting for that official confirmation to come through. There’s a high chance he could be available for us. A few things need to happen before the ban is imposed so let’s see. You saw from the Dortmund game he did very well. He’s been bright and he’s trained.
“The only way I can judge him is on that. He’s been good around the group and the training ground. From how I can see, he’s handling himself in the right way.
“I think I said in the press conference the other day that I can’t work with hindsight. We didn’t know this was even a possibility. There’s a frustration that we won’t have him now, as I liked him as a footballer.”
Tonali made a high-profile move to Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer transfer window for a fee of £55 million ($67 million).
Despite having only played in 12 matches this season, he is now expected to remain unavailable for competitive matches until August 2024.
However, he will retain the ability to train with his Newcastle teammates and participate in any friendly matches.
Sandro Tonali, while facing a looming 10-month ban due to alleged illegal betting activity, received a warm welcome from Newcastle United fans.
Earlier this month, Newcastle confirmed that the 23-year-old midfielder was under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation for reportedly placing bets on his former team, AC Milan.
He has since admitted to these wagers, which could lead to a 10-month suspension.
In the meantime, ahead of any potential disciplinary action, Tonali was warmly embraced by the Magpies’ supporters at St James’ Park when he came off the bench during his team’s 1-0 loss to Dortmund on Wednesday.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55 million ($66.6 million) deal in July, has made a positive impact on the North East club so far.
However, his impending ban is a significant setback for Eddie Howe’s team, which aspires to advance in the Champions League and climb the Premier League table.
Should Tonali face a suspension, Newcastle is likely to seek another midfielder during the January transfer window.
Interestingly, Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli has already been banned for seven months in connection with the ongoing betting scandal.
Tonali and Newcastle will soon learn the midfielder’s fate, but they have a forthcoming game against Wolves on Saturday.
Their nextChampions League match is scheduled for November 7, when they face Dortmund in Germany.
Newcastle United has come to terms with the fact that Sandro Tonali is potentially facing an extended ban due to his violation of gambling regulations in Italy, according to a report from Football Insider.
Consequently, the club is now poised to enter the transfer market in the upcoming January window.
Sandro Tonali, a 23-year-old who made a £55 million switch from AC Milan to Newcastle during the summer, has been a significant asset to the Magpies.
His potential absence is a considerable setback, especially as the team aims to manage both domestic commitments and their return to the Champions League.
Beppe Riso, the agent of the Italy international, holds out hope that his client won’t face excessively severe penalties.
“Sandro will pay for what he did wrong but he won’t be punished for what he didn’t do,” Riso told Dazn Italia. “I’ve already read too many sentences around this. I hope the correct sanction is given for what he represents for our football, he is an Italian asset.”
Dan Burn described his goal in Newcastle’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain as a dream come true.
This momentous achievement followed a challenging period in his mid-20s when he found himself without a club after being turned down by Fulham.
Newcastle currently occupies the leading position in Group F in their first Champions League campaign since the 2002–03 season.
They achieved this feat by securing an impressive victory over the French champions PSG at St. James’s Park, with goals contributed by Miguel Almirón, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and Fabian Schär.
And Burn, who grew up in nearby Blyth as a Newcastle supporter, said the goal and performance left him waiting for somebody to “wake me up” from his dream.
“It has not sunk in; I am a bit speechless,” Burn told TNT Sports. “It is like dream and I am waiting for someone to wake me up. I am waiting for the bubble to pop.
“Amazing [to score]. When the flag went up, I was gutted. I was so angry for Bruno [Guimaraes] shooting, but it comes back and as soon as it got hung in the air, I just went for it.
“I can’t believe it, obviously. The home games are the ones we can go and attack and Dortmund is next. I cannot believe I am saying Dortmund is next!”
Having spent much of his career in English football’s lower leagues at clubs including Yeovil, Wigan and Birmingham, Burn said he has had a tough route to the Champions League.
“I just tried to survive at that apprentice level and you try to work your way up,” he said. “I was released by Fulham at 25 years old; to come back and play Champions League football, I am very proud.”
Two years afterNewcastle were bought by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, Wednesday’s win was the biggest of their new era.
“I remember when the takeover happened,” Burn said. “I was out with my dad and I thought, ‘I think that’s me done now; I’ll never get to Newcastle.’ Three months later, I was signed on deadline day and it’s been straight up from there.”
The scorers on one of the great nights at St. James’s Park were players who are far from the “galácticos.” Many thought Newcastle might be signing under the richest owners in soccer.
Like Burn, Longstaff was a lifelong supporter of the team who was raised in the neighbourhood.
“For me and Burny to score is unreal,” Longstaff said. “There’s a few here who probably thought we were out the door. I’m so proud to be from Newcastle; I’m over the moon.”
Newcastle winger Harvey Barnesis facing an extended spell on the sidelines due to a foot injury suffered during the match against Sheffield United.
The 25-year-old was forced to leave the game after just 12 minutes during Newcastle’s 8-0 victory at Bramall Lane.
Manager Eddie Howe is concerned that Barnes, whose transfer cost £38 million, may be unavailable for a significant period.
Barnes has already undergone a scan, and the next step is consulting a specialist to determine whether surgery is necessary for the injury.
Ahead of facing Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, Howe said: “Yes, we’re fearing it’s going to be [a long-term injury].
“It’s difficult. I don’t want to put a time on it until we get confirmation from the specialist, but I think it will be months rather than weeks.”
Newcastle will welcome Burnley in the Premier League this Sunday, followed by a crucial Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park next Wednesday.
Unfortunately, Barnes is expected to be absent for the upcoming fixtures.
🤕 An update from Eddie Howe on the injury Harvey Barnes sustained at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
"It's an injury to his foot, just below the toe, and I think it's quite a substantial injury. We've had the scans and now we're waiting now a specialist opinion on what's next and… pic.twitter.com/BdaoD3dUfk
Revealing more on the forward’s issue, Howe added: “It’s an injury to a part of the foot just below the toe. I think it’s quite a substantial injury.
“We’ve had it scanned; we’re waiting now for a specialist’s opinion on what to do next, whether there’s surgery involved or not.
“I don’t think it was a tackle; I think it was just pushing off to run, a very unusual injury.
“I won’t go too technical because I’m not medically qualified to do so, but yes, very unusual.”
Since joiningNewcastle over the summer, Barnes has featured in seven matches. He started in two of them and had an impressive debut against Aston Villa, where he notched a goal and an assist.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his relief after his team narrowly defeated Brentford, putting an end to their three-game losing streak in the league.
Callum Wilson secured the win with a penalty kick at St James’ Park, and Howe openly acknowledged his sense of relief once the match concluded.
He said: “I think there was a lot of relief in our emotions at the end.
“It wasn’t a fantastic performance from us but it was a determined one, a gritty one. It was one that wanted to show our response from the Brighton performance.
“I think we’ve seen that, a clean sheet, a massive three points, and now we can move forward.
“When you’re manager of this football club you can’t lose games on a consistent basis, it can’t become a habit. We are determined to bounce back from the three defeats and that’s the Premier League, there’s no easy fixtures.
“Today was a tricky one for us, Brentford are a really good team. We stayed in the game and in the second half we were a lot better. I’m really pleased with the focus, we know how important the Premier League is for us.
“I only look at the next game and pick the team to win that. Whether the team changes for Tuesday night [against AC Milan] who knows.”
Wilson also expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the significance of obtaining a win following three consecutive league defeats, including a significant 3-1 loss to Brighton.
He said: “It [the win] was massive. The break probably came at a good time for us, we were on a run of defeats and needed back to winning ways.
“The break got us to regroup, we worked on a few things we had to improve. We had to win ugly and three points were the most important today.”
Leeds United supporter, identified as David Derbyshire, aged 35 and residing on Marley Street in Beeston, has reportedly been sentenced to a 12-week prison term and received a six-year football banning order by Leeds Magistrates Court for assaultingNewcastle United manager Eddie Howe during a Premier League match in May.
The incident occurred during a match on May 13 between Leeds United and Newcastle United at Elland Road.
In the 93rd minute of the game, Derbyshire left his seat in the stands and entered the pitch-side technical area, where he engaged in a verbal altercation with Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.
The situation escalated when Derbyshire pushed Howe’s left shoulder.
Security staff promptly intervened, removing Derbyshire from the area, and he was subsequently arrested by West Yorkshire Police. The assault was broadcast live on television and garnered significant public attention.
Following this incident, Leeds United have imposed a lifetime ban on Derbyshire, underscoring their zero-tolerance stance towards such misconduct.
Derbyshire entered a guilty plea to the charges on July 21.
Howe was shocked after the incident and he told BT Sport after the match: “That was a real surprise. I was concentrating on the game. It was the last thing you think could happen.”
“I can’t repeat what he said but it makes you think, What if?’. It was personal to me. I can’t remember if he pushed me or not; it was such a strange thing to happen. Moments like that make you think.”
“Criminal behaviour of this kind is completely unacceptable, particularly where club staff or players are targeted during a large-scale sports event such as this. I know that fans of the sport, regardless of their club affiliations, will join us in condemning anyone who acts in this way.
”We will always treat incidents like this very seriously and we work closely with Leeds United and visiting clubs to fully investigate any offences and take robust action against those responsible, including seeking football banning orders against them.”
Eddie Howe concedes that Newcastle’s defeat at Brighton serves as a stark reminder that they cannot afford to let their Champions League campaign divert attention from the demanding Premier League.
The Magpies are making their return to the group stage of European football’s premier competition after a two-decade absence.
They have been drawn to face formidable opponents in AC Milan, Paris St Germain, and Borussia Dortmund.
However, the anticipation surrounding these upcoming clashes was quickly dampened by a string of three consecutive Premier League defeats, with 18-year-old Evan Ferguson’s hat-trick sealing a 3-1 victory for Brighton.
Manager Eddie Howe, whose team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against 10-man Liverpool the previous weekend and a 1-0 loss to Manchester City, acknowledges his responsibility for this recent downturn in form but emphasizes that he will approach the situation with measured perspective.
“It’s never been lost on me how difficult the Premier League is,” he said.
“I know how tough a league it is, it’s ruthless, so if you get your focus swayed, you’re going to have big problems – I don’t think our focus has been.
“We’ve tried to very much concentrate on our next match, that will always be our focus and we’re determined to be successful in the league this year and win as many games as possible.
“But we know the demands placed upon us are going to be extreme so this is a warning, I think, that we can’t be swayed and the Premier League is a very tough division.
“We’ve lost three in a row and we have to take responsibility for that. It’s important that I don’t over-react.”
Newcastle initially enjoyed the advantage in the early chances of the match on the south coast. However, they found themselves trailing after Evan Ferguson’s 27th-minute goal, a result of defensive lapses.
The Republic of Ireland striker then added to his tally with a remarkable long-range strike. He went on to achieve a rare feat by becoming only the fourth teenager in Premier League history to score a hat-trick, with one of his goals taking a deflection off Fabian Schar.
Manager Eddie Howe, who disclosed that midfielder Joe Willock would be sidelined for an additional six weeks due to a hamstring injury compounded by a fresh Achilles problem, is eager for a swift return to action as his team heads into a two-week international break.
“I’d like a game pretty quickly, if I could,” said Howe, whose team host Brentford on September 17.
“We have some great games to come and we’re looking forward to that challenge.
It's definitely not our best start! We know we have to improve and we will charge ourselves for that! For the best of @NUFC ever. Time now to regroup and come back focussed on our goals! We will be together in all situations 🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣ pic.twitter.com/xG8BuQqjpi
“I think the challenge to me is to lift everybody and keep our confidence levels because we are a very good team and we have to always have that in the back of our minds as we go into the next two weeks.
“The lads are very disappointed. Collectively we’ve got an outstanding group of individuals, great mentalities and we know what we’ve got to do.”
Ferguson’s first senior hat-trick, which was followed by Callum Wilson’s consolation, was the third in the Premier League on Saturday after trebles for Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min.
“It’s a good day,” he told Brighton’s website. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.
“It’s not bad company to be in; Haaland’s record last season (52 City goals in all competitions) and Son’s been doing it for a number of years, so it’s good company to be in.”
Police investigating alleged attack on Jamaal Lascelles after gang of men ‘threatened to shoot’ Newcastle captain in city centre brawl Police are investigating a brawl inNewcastle’s city centre in which Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles and his teenage brother were allegedly attacked.
The 29-year-old defender had been on a night out with his younger brother on Saturday, August 19, during which they attended the Chinawhite nightclub, when a fight broke out in the early hours.
Footage of the incident in question has been circulated on social media.
In the video that has been released online, Lascelles and his 19-year-old brother appear to be caught up in an altercation with an angry gang. It is claimed that Lascelles’ sibling was elbowed in an “unprovoked attack” before bottles were thrown and “six to eight” men joined the argument and threw punches “from all angles”.
According to witnesses cited by the Daily Mail, the assailants targeting Lascelles allegedly threatened to “shoot” the player, a native of Nottingham, as he intervened to safeguard his brother.
Following the altercation,a companion of Lascelles required hospitalisation, with the group responsible for the physical harm having departed the scene before emergency services could respond.
Premier League club, Newcastle United, announced on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia’s men’s football team is scheduled to compete in two international friendly matches at the St James’ Park stadium in September.
Back in June, ESPN reported that discussions were underway for Newcastle to host a Saudi Arabia friendly during the September international break.
Given that the majority shareholder of Newcastle is Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the club is set to facilitate the Saudi national side’s matches against Costa Rica on September 8 and South Korea on September 12 at St James’ Park.
These two games are integral to Saudi Arabia’s preparations for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, which is slated to take place in Qatar in January 2024.
Notably,Saudi Arabia has clinched the Asian Cup title three times, with their most recent victory occurring in 1996.
Despite significant investments in the summer transfer window, Newcastle United’s managerEddie Howe emphasised the need for one more addition to bolster squad depth.
This requirement arises as the team navigates dual challenges in the Premier League and Champions League.
In the recent close season, Newcastle made substantial expenditures, amounting to £128 million, to secure the services of players like Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Tino Livramento.
Given their qualification for the Champions League, a feat not accomplished in two decades, Howe expressed his intention to enhance the squad further.
“I’d love one more player personally, and I think then we’d have the ideal depth at this moment with the injuries that we currently have. Let’s wait and see,” Howe told reporters ahead of their Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.
“Not 100% (sure of signing more players) because it depends on the deal, and I think we may have to be creative with this last player.
“But it’s difficult to make that a definite because, again, it depends on injuries between now and the window shutting.”
The manager confirmed Joe Willock, who missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury, remains sidelined at least until mid-September.
“He has just felt a little bit of discomfort in his hamstring, not necessarily another pull to the area,” the manager said.
“We will probably miss him for the first group of games before the first international break.”
Howe did receive a boost with defender Fabian Schar returning from injury, saying that he has been training well.
Newcastle moved early to bring in midfielder Tonali fromAC Milan, with the player signing in early July, and Howe said he is happy with how the Italian player settled in during pre-season.
“I think when you’re bringing players from abroad, you have to try and get them early. I have to compliment Sandro on how he has handled the move and how he is adapting to the changes,” Howe said.
“We’re pleased to get the majority of our business done early, and I think we’re in a good place.”
Allan Saint-Maximin has announced his departure from Newcastle as he prepares for a likely move to the wealthySaudi Pro League.
The French winger, who has been strongly linked with a £30 million ($38.5 million) transfer to Al-Ahli, bid farewell to the Premier League club in a heartfelt message posted on his Instagram account.
In his message, he expressed his love for the club and reminisced about their journey from battling relegation to achieving an impressive fourth-placed finish last season.
Under the management of Eddie Howe, Newcastle has been making significant investments since the club’s takeover by Saudi-backed owners in October 2021.
Saint-Maximin, 26, said: “I fell for Newcastle, I had great opportunities to leave during dark days, but that was too late. I was already in love, I wanted, I needed, I had to stay for helping my team to save the club from Premier League relegation because it meant the world for me.
“Of course during those dark days some may have had their doubts, but I always believed in this club and look where we are today, it’s just so beautiful.
I’m leaving Newcastle as it should always have been and that’s my greatest trophy because I was a part of it.” Saint-Maximin has made 124 appearances for the club and scored 13 goals since joining from Nice in 2019.
Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy have already signed for Al-Ahli, while Karim Benzema, Jordan Henderson and N’Golo Kante have also joined Pro League clubs in recent weeks.
Eddie Howe expressed admiration for his Newcastle players after they secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton in the Premier League Summer Series.
The Magpies had been intensifying their pre-season preparations, following a 1-1 draw against Chelsea earlier.
Against their domestic rivals, they managed to clinch a win.
Elliot Anderson’s quick-fire two goals in just six minutes stunned the Seagulls, and Howe was pleased with how his team executed everything he had asked of them during the match.
He said: “It was a really tough game today, we always know that when we play Brighton.
“I felt defensively we were excellent, it was more in possession that we really struggled.
“We had a couple of players playing out of position and that is always difficult but I was really pleased with the commitment and attitude of the players to deliver what we asked them to do. “I don’t think they had an amazing amount of chances, I thought we were a threat in the game all the way through and delighted to win in the end.”
Anderson has been a standout performer for the Tyneside club during the summer and is looking to take his game to the next level during the upcoming campaign.
The former Bristol Rovers loanee found himself in the right positions for both of his goals and struck superbly to beat Bart Verbruggen.
On the 20-year-old, Howe added: “He was running right until the end, he came back as the fittest player in all of our tests and it’s no surprise that he is the one who got the winning goal.
“He has always been a goalscorer and creator. He has started to show with his endurance levels and physicality the quality that he has.”
Anderson made 23 appearances in the Premier League last season with most of them coming from the bench, but he could be in line for a starting spot in 2023-24.
Reflecting on last night’s match, he said: “You always want more and I could have more, I just need to tidy a few things up.
“There were a few goals I set out before coming over to America which was to score more goals.”
By concealing the narcotics in puzzles and artwork, a woman sent drugs to her partner who was incarcerated.
After the guidelines for loved ones sending gifts to inmates were loosened during Covid, Charmaine Orange delivered Dean Wright various substances by hiding them in jigsaw and matchstick puzzles and blending them with paint.
In addition, according to evidence presented at Newcastle Crown Court, $17,000 went through her bank accounts after she chose to ignore the fact that her ex-boyfriend Wright was using her information to receive money from his drug trafficking business within HMP Northumberland.
However, after a judge was told mum-of-two Orange was in a controlling relationship with Wright, he spared her an immediate spell behind bars.
Liam O’Brien, prosecuting, said the drugs supply offences happened in April and May 2020. He told the court: ‘She did so in a couple of different ways.
‘During lockdown, the prison changed the rules so family members could send things like puzzles and jigsaws.
‘On one occasion the defendant sent a matchbox puzzle containing drugs and another time a jigsaw had drugs hidden in it.
‘There was also a painting with paint which had drugs mixed with it. Another time, blue powder was put in a bag and hidden between two pieces of paper. It leaked and went all over the post and the whole of the prison post had to be binned as it was contaminated.’
Orange, 35, of Walling Road, Blakelaw, Newcastle, was traced as the sender as her bank card had been used to pay for postage.
The 34-year-old, who has two previous convictions for an environmental and a driving matter, pleaded guilty to supplying buprenorphine, diazepam and a psychoactive substance – flualprazolam.
She was sentenced to nine months suspended for 12 months with a one-month curfew between 8pm and 6pm. She faces proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Jamie Adams, defending, said: ‘This woman was leading a very hard-working lifestyle and had two children to look after. She met Dean Wright and he was not physically abusive but intensely emotionally abusive.
‘That’s what brought her to this offending.’
Mr Adams said when Orange sought to break up with Wright, he wrote what appeared to be a suicide note blaming her and branding her a ‘murderer’ for what he was threatening to do to himself.
Mr Adams added: ‘She accepts there are monies that have gone into her account which had emanated from drugs she sent in to him when he was in custody. He was clearly making some profit out of what was sent in.
‘He was giving people her bank details. She was not profiting from it at all.’
The court heard her bank details were found in at least five prison cells occupied by inmates other than Wright.
