Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei recently shared his assessment of the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) governance over the past eight years.
Giving them a rating of 7 out of 10, he praised their performance in handling challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During a discussion on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Osei acknowledged the government’s commendable work but also criticised its lack of substantial support for the creative arts industry.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, I will give them 7.
“I’ve always been saying that enough attention is not being paid to the creative sector, and the ministers and the deputy ministers and the people who are part of us that we put in place of authority are not doing much,” Prince David Osei stated.
He highlighted the need for more attention and resources to be allocated to this sector, expressing disappointment in the current level of support from government officials.
“I believe the creative arts (industry) should be well-equipped. We should get more of the national cake.”
Osei emphasised that the creative arts industry plays a crucial role in Ghana’s development and should receive a larger share of national resources.
He stressed the importance of recognizing the contributions of creatives in providing entertainment and emotional relief to the public.
“Until we start respecting the creative arts and paying attention to it, we are not going to benefit as much as we are supposed to.
“This is because a lot of people tend to look down on actors and musicians, but we have the platform, and we have the numbers.
“We can convince the people, persuade the people, cause great change in governance, and also get involved in the political discourse.”
The actor called for greater respect and investment in the arts, pointing out that without proper support, the country misses out on potential benefits.
He also noted the influence of creatives in shaping public opinion and participating in political discourse, highlighting the need for their voices to be heard and valued.
