I was going to misbehave but my wife saved me – Ken Agyapong speaks on aftermath of NPP primaries

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has disclosed that it was his wife who prevented him from delivering a potentially confrontational speech following his defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary last year.

Speaking candidly on the KSM Show on February 23, 2024, Agyapong admitted that he had initially planned to express his grievances on stage upon witnessing individuals who had previously offended him at the event to announce the winner of the race at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Recalling the pivotal moment, Agyapong recounted how he had decided to gracefully concede defeat and even went as far as congratulating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the eventual winner of the primary. However, he acknowledged feeling deeply aggrieved upon seeing certain individuals in attendance.

Agyapong attributed his restraint to the presence and intervention of his wife, whom he had brought along to a public gathering of that magnitude for the first time. He credited her for persuading him to conduct himself in a gentlemanly manner and refrain from making potentially inflammatory remarks.

Expressing gratitude for his wife’s influence, Agyapong admitted that he had struggled to control his emotions and refrain from expressing his frustrations publicly. He emphasized the importance of considering the broader implications of his actions, not only for himself but also for the party and the nation as a whole.

In the NPP primaries held on November 4, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious with 118,210 votes, representing 61.47% of the total votes cast. Kennedy Agyapong secured the second position with 71,996 votes, accounting for 35.52% of the total valid votes.

Other contenders in the race, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh, garnered 1,459 votes and 781 votes, respectively.

Agyapong’s revelation sheds light on the internal dynamics and personal struggles experienced by political figures during moments of defeat, highlighting the importance of composure and leadership in such circumstances.
