Ghanaian musician Peter Famiyeh Bozaha known popularly as Fameye revealed in a recent interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s midmorning show, a bold statement regarding the value of accolades in his career.
Reflecting on his journey from anonymity to acclaim, Fameye shared that a Ghana Music Awards trophy now holds more importance to him than a Grammy or BET award.
In the conversation with Nana Romeo on February 21, 2024, Fameye explained that his perspective had evolved over time.
While his song “Destiny” once emphasised the prestige of Grammy and BET awards, he now places greater value on national recognition, particularly from the Ghana Music Awards.
“This is where I was born and raised. This is where I work, and this is where when I perform in my native language, my fans are excited. The support that has made me who I am came from this country. And it is when you have massive support from your home country that you can rise to those desired heights,” Fameye stated.
Fameye expressed gratitude for the support he received from his home country and recalled the inspiration he drew from witnessing Highlife and Hiplife legends receive Ghana Music Awards.
He emphasized the role of local support in shaping his success and highlighted how prestigious national awards contribute to a positive impression when international organisations like the Recording Academy (Grammys) visit Ghana.
While Fameye clarified that he is not opposed to winning a Grammy or BET award, he underscored his newfound appreciation for the Ghana Music Awards.
He suggested that continuous recognition at the local level would bring joy to his fans and contribute to their pride and support.
“If I get a Grammy or BET, I’d be glad but from now onwards, I’m saying Ghana Music Awards is heavier than the Grammys. So if I continuously win Ghana Music Awards and I move on to a Grammy and BET, my fans will be delighted.
“Ultimately, these awards, embolden and arm your fans to defend your honour when someone belittles your talent or effort,” he added. “It makes them proud of us, and proud to associate with us.”
Acknowledging that awards strengthen the connection between artists and their fans, Fameye concluded by expressing contentment with his career.
Regardless of the possibility of winning a Grammy, he emphasised that winning at the Ghana Music Awards is what matters most to him.
