A dynamic personality known for her roles as a broadcaster, event planner, and entrepreneur, Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum, recently shared her dislike for staying within her comfort zone.
Speaking to Sammy Brown, host of Accra 100.5 FM’s after-drive “Akwaaba” program, Asantewaa revealed that this characteristic inspired her to embark on a remarkable challenge in December 2023 attempting to break the Guinness World Records (GWR) for the longest singing marathon.
Over the course of 126 hours and 52 minutes, Asantewaa passionately sang only Ghanaian songs, aiming to surpass the existing record of 105 hours set by Sunil Waghmare in 2012.
Beyond personal motivation, she emphasised her goal of promoting Ghanaian music on a global scale and proving that individuals of diverse backgrounds, including Africans like herself, can achieve GWR acclaim.
The 33-year-old entrepreneur expressed her disdain for complacency, stating, “I don’t like being comfortable. I want to always be doing something impactful and very positive.”
Reflecting on her decision to focus on Ghanaian music, she explained, “When you want to do something to elevate your country, you must look at something important that a lot of people have great interest in, which is our Ghanaian music.”
Motivated by the desire to challenge stereotypes, Asantewaa observed a lack of African representation among GWR record holders and decided to take on this monumental task.
She highlighted the underrepresentation of Africans in such achievements and asserted, “I dared myself and made the attempt.”
Commencing her singing marathon on December 24, 2023, Asantewaa dedicated five days to this extraordinary feat.
As she eagerly awaits the Guinness World Records’ verdict, having expedited the assessment process through a fast-tracked submission, her story stands as a testament to breaking records and shattering barriers.
