Three-time Grammy-nominee, Rocky Dawuni, discusses the forthcoming Grammy Awards and applauds the positive strides in acknowledging African music on the global stage.
During a recent interview on Y 107.9 FM’s Y Lounge with Akosua Hanson, Dawuni shared insights, stating, “The Grammy is coming, and around that time, there’s a lot of events not necessarily around it, but there’s certainly a lot of events.”
This year, Dawuni celebrates a major achievement for African music, the introduction of an African category at the Grammy Awards.
Expressing his excitement about the expanded opportunities for African artists, Dawuni emphasised the significance of leveraging this platform to showcase African musical talents on a global scale.
“For me, any attention that comes to African music, wherever it may be, is a good thing for collectively ourselves. So we need to support,” Dawuni asserted.
As a longstanding advocate for the recognition of African music, Dawuni acknowledged the progress made, reflecting on earlier days when the push for recognition faced challenges. He noted, “When we even started pushing for the recognition of African music, most people didn’t know, and now we are seeing it really bear fruits. I’m really happy.”
Dawuni’s optimism and commitment align with the sentiments of numerous artists and industry professionals who perceive the increasing visibility of African music as a positive stride towards a more inclusive and diverse music landscape.
