Nigerian police apprehend Onyeabuchi Okafo and Jasmine Okekeagwu, the son and adopted daughter of renowned comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu.
The duo faces accusations of stealing 55 million naira ($60,700; £47,800) earmarked for Mr. Ibu’s medical expenses.
The alleged theft involved the illicit acquisition of the actor’s phone, with the culprits purportedly hacking into his banking details.
The funds, contributed by fans and well-wishers during Mr Ibu’s health struggles, were intended for his treatment following a prolonged illness last year that led to the amputation of one of his legs.
The Nollywood star had undergone five surgical procedures, as confirmed by his family.
Reports indicate that authorities have successfully recovered 50 million naira.
Mayegun Aminat, spokesperson for the police’s criminal investigation department, revealed the suspects’ plan to flee to the UK.
Although a Lagos court has granted the accused duo a $56,000 bail, investigations persist, with the court setting their next appearance for March.
Mr. Ibu has been discharged following a successful amputation of his legs.
