  • Educational achievements must impact on society— Prof. Obosu-Mensah

The St Francis College of Education (FRANCO) at Hohoe in the Volta Region has conferred Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) on 448 graduating students of the college at its 12th congregation.

Read: Relationship debate: Education not key in choosing a husband

It was on the theme: “Essential elements of quality teacher education in Ghana: The role of stakeholders”.

    Impact on society

Fourteen of the graduates had first class, with 157 second class upper division, while 162 had second class lower division. Third class graduates numbered 77, with 38 passes.

Addressing the congregation, a Professor of Sociology at the Lorain County Community College in the USA, Prof. Kwaku Obosu-Mensah, said educational achievements were meaningless if society did not feel their impact.

He, therefore, called on graduates to let their educational achievements impact the lives of the people in society.

Prof. Obosu-Mensah likened the urgent need for graduates to start addressing issues and problems in society to how people meted out instance justice to suspected criminals.

    Performance

In his address, the Principal of the college, Mr Raphel Kodzo Kwashie, said this year’s congregation recorded the highest number of first class students in the history of the college.

He said the sacrifices and hard work of staff and management of the college were what resulted in the improvement in the academic performance and discipline among the students.

    Projects

Touching on some of the projects carried out by the management, the principal said the fence wall of the college was extended by 310 metres.

He said the auditorium of the college had also been secured with burglar proof metal protection, while the lecture halls had been converted into departmental offices for Heads of Department (HODs) of the college.

Those, he said, were all done with the college’s internally generated funds (IGF).

Mr Kwashie, however, mentioned that the college faced financial challenges, and that due to inadequate funds, the college engaged students to do grounds work instead of hiring labourers.

Master Obed Odoom was adjudged the Overall Best Graduating Student.

  • AFCON 2019: Benin stun Morocco on penalties to reach quarter-finals

Benin produced a major surprise to beat Morocco 4-1 on penalties and book a quarter-final spot at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.

Mama Seibou hit the winning penalty to send 10-man Benin through after Khaled Adenon had been sent off in extra time.

In an incident-packed tie in Cairo, Moise Adilehou put Benin ahead before Youssef En-Nesyri equalised.

Morocco wasted a chance to win it with the last kick of normal time but Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech’s penalty struck a post.

Read: AFCON 2019: Jordan Ayew named Man-of-the-Match after Benin holds Ghana

Benin scored all their penalties in the shootout through Olivier Verdon, David Djigla and Tidjani Anaane before Seibou’s effort sparked wild celebrations on and off the pitch inside the Al Salam Stadium.

In what is only their fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, Benin will face the winners of Friday’s late last-16 tie between Uganda and Senegal in the quarter-finals on 10 July.

    Wasteful Morocco pay the price

Morocco had progressed from the group stage with three wins and without conceding a goal.

Despite peppering Benin’s goal with 22 shots during the 120 minutes, they lacked cutting edge and are now on their way home from a tournament they were expected to do well in.

En-Nesyri and Ziyech both forced saves from keeper Saturnin Allagbe before Benin took the lead through Adilehou’s close-range volley following a corner.

Morocco were gifted their equaliser, an horrendous mistake by Jordan Adeoti allowing Mbark Boussoufa to set up En-Nesyri to fire under Allagbe.

In the dying moments of normal time, Morocco were awarded a penalty when former West Brom and Sunderland midfielder Stephane Sessegnon fouled Achraf Hakimi.

However, Ziyech’s attempt hit a post and rebounded to safety.

Benin, who advanced to the last-16 as one of the best four third-placed teams in the group stage, played the final 23 minutes of extra time with 10 men when Adenon was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Morocco struggled to make the extra-man advantage count and paid the price as they lost the shootout.

Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal fired over the bar after Oussama Idrissi had scored Morocco’s opening penalty before En-Nesyri’s attempt was brilliantly diverted on to the bar by Allagbe.

  • CAF General Secretary hails FIFA chief Samoura role in African football reforms as ‘great opportunity’

The General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mouad Hajji, has strongly defended the decision to appoint Fatma Samoura as ‘Fifa General Delegate for Africa’ insisting its a ‘great opportunity’ for African football to improve its governance structures.

CAF approached football’s world governing body FIFA last month to help the beleaguered body improve its administration after coming under scrutiny on several issues relating to both governance and administration.

Read: No match fixing investigation in Zimbabwe-DRC match CAF chief Hajji

FIFA subsequently appointed its secretary general Samoura to take charge of the committee to be put in place to help Africa’s governing body to conduct a review of its systems for implementation.

Samoura, from Senegal, will take charge for six months from 1 August, with the relationship “renewable with the agreement of both organisations”.

The 56-year-old will remain secretary general of Fifa but will delegate various functions to others but her appointment has been criticised in certain quarters with claims that the move is ceding control of African football to Europeans.

However, Hajji told a press conference in Egypt on Friday that the Samoura-led body will conduct the review needed to put African football in a sound footing for the future.

“The arrival of Samoura is a great opportunity. She arrives with a group of experts and their role will help accelerate the reforms within CAF,” Hajji said at the press conference on Friday.

CAF President Ahmad proposed the idea of seeking Fifa’s expertise to help assess CAF’s current situation and speed up reforms aimed at ensuring the organisation operates with “transparency and efficiency”.

The notion was unanimously approved by CAF’s executive committee, and Samoura and a group of experts will work in tandem with Ahmad and his team to cover a number of areas, in an agreement that can be renewed with the agreement of both parties.

These areas include overseeing operational management of CAF, ensuring the “efficient and professional organisation of all CAF competitions”, and supporting the growth and development of football in all African regions.

Samoura, a Senegalese former diplomat, will remain as secretary general of Fifa but will delegate her functions within the administration, according to a joint statement from Fifa and CAF.

African football’s leading club competition was thrown into disarray in the run-up to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after the announcement that its showpiece game will have to be replayed.

CAF said that the Champions League final between Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco would be replayed at a neutral venue after the Cup of Nations, which runs from June 21 to July 19.

  • Accra High Court throws out George Lutterodts injunction on GAA Congress

An Accra High Court has dismissed Ambassador George Lutterodt and 14 others application for an injunction on Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) elective General Assembly which was scheduled for December 15, 2018 in Tamale last year and has awarded a cost of GHS 3,000 against the Plaintiffs.

Read: Ghana athletics is dying — Lutterodt

The Court, presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensa Datsa of Criminal Court 4 of the Accra High Court, also dismissed a second application which prayed the Court to order for an Interim Management Committee to be set up to oversee the leadership of the Association untill new executives are elected.

Judge Mensah Datsa in her ruling on Friday July 5, 2019 said the Plaintiffs did not provide “compelling case to warrant” the grant of an interlocutory injunction on the General Assembly, before adding that granting their “application will have serious negative consequences on other stakeholders.”

Read: Athletics Association open nomination for elections

She noted that Ghana could be suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), should such demands by Ambassador George Lutterodt and his team are granted.

She explained that; “For an injunction to be granted, the applicants must establish a legal right respectable by law”, and that, the “applicants have not presented a compelling case to warrant the court to grant an interlocutory injunction on the GAA General Assembly.”

Mrs Mensa Datsa also noted that, “the setting of up of an Interim Management Committee this court is being invited to do is alien to the Constitution of the GAA and will amount to undue interference in the activities of the GAA.”

The Learned Judge added that; “It must be stressed that the GAA is an independent body with its own Constitution and governed by an international association, IAAF and any act of interference by an outside body will lead to the suspension of Ghana from international competitions.”

“The implications of granting their application will have serious negative consequences on the other stakeholders including Ghana, thus those applications are refused or dismissed,” she announced before asking Counsels for both parties if they had any other concerns.

Counsel for the defendant, Nana Aba Ama Acquah, prayed the Court to award damages of GHS 10,000 against the Plaintiffs for dragging the image of her clients into the mud with allegations of manipulating the Constitution to favour some delegates.

She said the GAA as a body have been hit with negativity over the past eight (8) and the Plaintiffs must be made to pay for the damages.

Mr Geoffrey Quist, the Counsel for the lead Plaintiff, told the Court his client was not in “court for fun, but for the betterment of Athletics in the Country” and prayed to the court that they will pay GHS 2,000.

After listening to both parties, Judge Mensah Datsa awarded a cost of GHS 3,000 for damages against Mr. George Lutterodt and the 14 others.

Whilst Secretary General Bawah Fuseini was in Court representing the 1st (Prof Francis Dodoo, President of the GAA) and Second Defendant (Bawah Fuseini, Secretary General, GAA) and Christopher Darko-Amankrah for the 5th defendant (GAA), five members of the Plaintiffs, Albert Nukpezah, George Doe, Anslem Nyavadzi, Issac Lamptey, and Priceworth Anane Asare were in Court for the ruling.

  • No match fixing investigation in Zimbabwe-DRC match – CAF chief Hajji

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) says it is not investigating allegations of match fixing involving Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations following their 4-0 defeat to DR Congo but insists the governing body has zero tolerance for graft in the game.

Mouad Hajji, the General Secretary of CAF, says no official complaint has been received over the group stage game despite media reports in Zimbabwe that the continental governing body is investigating the match.

Read: China extends US$60 million grant to Zimbabwe for cyclone relief efforts

Zimbabwean newspaper The Herald reported that DR Congo could be kicked out of the tournament by CAF for trying to influence the result of the match against The Warriors on June 30 after a report by the Zimbabwe FA.

According to the report the match was being investigated by a CAF emergency committee, who could remove DR Congo from the tournament and ban the country from the continental tournament for three years as well as issue a hefty fine.

Read: AFCON 2019: Uganda move closer to last 16 with 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe

The newspaper alleged that wealthy DR Congo politician and businessman Moise Katumbi was involved in a plot to sway Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze to underperform in the 4-0 loss.

However Hajji says it has not received any complaint from the Zimbabwe FA but insists any serious information on any match fixing on any game will be seriously investigated by CAF.

“At the level of the CAF, there is no suspicion,” the Moroccan said at a press conference in Cairo on Friday when asked about the media reports of CAF investigating the match between Zimbabwe and DR Congo.

“There is no hint of corruption about the Zimbabwe-DRC match in the third Group A match played on June 30, in Cairo.

“But if it turned out that there was anything, and not only for this match, I remind you that our policy is a zero tolerance policy on corruption. As of today, there is no correspondence or issue.”

Baroka FC keeper Chipezeze only played in the match after first-choice George Chigova picked up an injury during the warm-up but did not cover himself in glory, conceding some soft goals.

Hajji was moved to comment about the issue after the newspaper reported that “a large sum of money was supposed to be transferred into the bank of the Zimbabwean goalkeeper but the transaction was not completed after an Egyptian bank raised the red flag and reportedly declined to handle the issue”.

The author of this article claimed to have taken the information from “Alh Sports Cairo”, a newspaper that is supposed to be Egyptian but a thorough verification has revealed that this newspaper does not exist.

DR Congo are due to play Madagascar in the last 16 of the tournament being played in Egypt.

  • 25% of Ghanaians earn GH¢400 or less – SSNIT explains low pensions

Director-General of the Social Security National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, the often-cited low pension payment is because Ghanaians earn low salaries.

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang revealed on the business edition of the PM Express on Thursday that some 25% of Ghanaian workers who contribute to the SSNIT scheme make as little as GHS400 Ghana cedis or less.

Read: Manager granted bail for defaulting in SSNIT payments

The monthly salary for a person earning the minimum wage of GHS8.8 is GHS264, meaning a quarter of Ghana workers earn a little above the daily minimum wage.

“50% of all the contributors said they were earning gross salaries of 1,000 Ghana cedis or less In the formal sector. 71% of people in the formal sector say they are earning 1,800 or less,” the SSNIT boss read from a chart showing the distribution of monthly pensions versus salaries for February 2019.

Read: SSNIT asked to redouble efforts to capture workers in informal sector

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang said for Ghanaian workers to earn higher pension during retirement, allowances should be added to the basic salary.

According to him, that will increase the total income on which pension are deducted.

That, therefore, will require the amendment of the law regulating pensions but the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) does not back the proposal for a review of the pension laws.

CEO of the NPRA, Hayford Atta Krufi, said on PM Express on MultiTV that there can be a national conversation about the proposal but the current law must be made to work.

“I believe that we need to get the law to work a little bit…because 2020 is actually where the first batch of those who came under Act 766 as amended will be going on mandatory retirement,” he said.

He said if pension payments become the result of agitations about low payouts, growth and sustainability becomes an issue

Proceedings in Parliament were disrupted briefly Friday when the convener of the Economic Fighters League, Mr Ernesto Yeboah, unexpectedly shouted “Drop that Chamber. Drop that Chamber” from the public gallery.

When he was being whisked out of the public gallery by security officers, Mr Yeboah, who is leading the social media campaign ‘Storm Parliament Now’, shouted “We don’t want any discussion on that matter.”

Mr Yeboah, who is a former Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and two of his colleagues, whose names had not been provided, had been taken to the Parliament Police Station for interrogation.

He shouted in Parliament when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, Mr K.T. Hammond, was making a submission on the new chamber.

Mr Hammond had indicated that the discussion of the new chamber was as if the new chamber would be for only MPs.

He said the proposed new chamber would be an important symbol of the country’s Parliamentary democracy.

Mr Hammond wondered whether the public wanted “MPs to work under trees”.

He, therefore, suggested that the issue of a new chamber should be brought to Parliament for a discussion.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, first raised the issue of the new chamber in Parliament stressing the need for the leadership of Parliament to table the issue for discussion.

He said MPs were being bashed for taking a decision to construct a new chamber and indicated that the impression had been created as if members had met and taken the decision.

Mr Ablakwa said most of them [MPs] had subscribed to the hashtag “Drop that Chamber”, and that he wanted MPs to be briefed on the matter as indicated by the Majority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Responding, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said a joint caucus meeting would be held next week Tuesday to discuss the issue of the new chamber.

Meanwhile, the Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, had broken his silence on the new chamber and indicated that the issue was discussed in principle at the Board meeting.

He said the financials, procurement or terms of the contract for the project had not been concluded.

Mr Iddrisu said the Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Michael Quaye, had requested to meet him and Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu last Friday for 15 minutes to present the concept of the new chamber.

He said he was a member of the six-member Parliamentary Service Board (PSB) chaired by Prof Oquaye, that considered the issue in principle and he was not ready to breach that confidence.

  • Multiple abortions leading cause of ectopic pregnancy Expert

A Senior Medical Officer at the Police Hospital, Dr. Faisal Ayembillah has said multiple abortions have been identified as the major cause of ectopic pregnancy cases in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Johnnie Hughes on TV3 New Day, Dr. Ayembilla revealed that women who suffer infections for over a period of 5-years, or those who have engaged in repeated abortions have been identified to suffer the condition most during pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus which causes blood loss and injuring of the organs around the uterus is left to grow.

Read:7,575 girls drop out of school over pregnancy

Dr. Ayembillah said the dangerous aspect of this condition is that half of the women who suffer this, are not aware of this condition since the signs develop two months after conception.

Ectopic pregnancy, he added, is not hereditary and termed it as a condition that should receive a lot of medical attention.

“Yes as rightly mentioned, there are some risk factor, particularly, this one is not one of those that has anything to do with the hereditary conditions”

According to the doctor, aside the multiple abortions, the condition can occur due to the result of previous or not well treated infections.

Read:Queen mothers consider reintroduction of puberty rites to fight teenage pregnancy

“We know very well that when women get infections, and they do not know particularly the symptoms, and so let say you had an infection five years ago, it predisposes you to getting an ectopic pregnancy”.

Ectopic pregnancy is believed to affect women from the ages of 18-35years.

A damaged fallopian tube, use of fertility drugs, scarring from previous pelvic surgeries, pelvic inflammation diseases (PID) amongst a few others also cause ectopic pregnancy.

Treatments for this condition include medication and surgery to remove the tissue because the fertilized egg cannot survive outside the uterus.

  • Police save mentally unstable man from being killed over alleged kidnapping

A 25-year old man was nearly lynched Thursday after he was accused of kidnapping four children at Ejisu in the Ashanti region.

The man, whose name was not given, was arrested with four children under a strange circumstance, causing some residents to raise kidnapping alert.

Read: The mentally ill 29-year-old helped to die by Dutch doctors

He was beaten to the point of being lynched but the swift intervention by the police saved the suspect and was immediately taken to the Ejisu Divisional Police Command for interrogation.

Police investigators concluded after a thorough interrogation that the suspect is mentally unstable.

Divisional Police commander, ACP Stephen Tane Ngissah, said they have also established the four children the man was said to have kidnapped were actually his nephews.

“After realising one of the children was in a school uniform with Tikrom M/A primary stamp on it, we contacted the Assembly woman for the area to assist in identifying the families of the children. She came, identified them, and called their grandmother. The grandmother of the children, Ama Agyapomaah, confirmed that the suspect too is her son but is suffering from mental illness” ACP Ngissah said.

Recent incidents of kidnapping in the country have put residents on high alert.

But the police chief is cautioning the public against instant justice.

“The public should not be quick in taking the law into their hands when they suspect a crime else innocent lives will be lost”

A Virgin Atlantic flight has made an emergency landing in Boston after a fire broke out on board.

The plane was travelling from New York to London on Thursday night when the fire started, forcing the crew to divert the flight.

No major injuries were reported and all 217 passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft at Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Bomb disposal officers inspected the aircraft after it landed and found a device between the cushions of the seat where the blaze started.

“Preliminary investigation suggests it is a battery pack consistent in appearance with an external phone charger,” a police spokesman told reporters.

While no-one suffered major injuries, one passenger refused treatment for a “smoke related complaint”.

Virgin Atlantic confirmed in a statement that the flight had been diverted to Boston “due to reports of smoke in the cabin”.

  • ModernGhana journos, Peace FM editor charged with theft

Two journalists working with the online news portal, Modernghana.com, Emmanuel Adjafor Abugri and Emmauel Britwum, have been slapped with conspiracy to commit crime, stealing and unauthorised access to electronic records.

Also charged with the offense is editor of Peace FM, Yaw Obeng Manu, following their arrest and interrogation by officers from the National Security and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service.

Read: I was never beaten, tortured ModernGhana reporter contradicts editor

The journalists were picked up from their offices last week in connection with alleged hacking claims but were later released by the National Security.

According to National Security, initial investigations suggested that the attacks, which were being deployed by associates of the online portal, are targetted at other media houses.

The state security said the suspects have been hacking into the emails and servers of popular competing websites and newsrooms.

By so doing, they intercept emails and stories being filed by correspondents for their own use.

PeaceFm editor, Yaw Obeng Manu was subsequently invited and questioned over the same matter.

One of the journalists Emmanuel Adjafor Abugri has since levelled allegations of torture against the National Security, a claim the state security agency has vehemently denied.

His other colleague, Emmanuel Britwum, in a statement issued on his behalf Wednesday, says he was neither tortured nor brutalised.

But his statement is, however, now being challenged.

  • Venezuela’s rulers accused by UN of death squads and policy of fear

The UN has accused Venezuela of a strategy of instilling fear in its population to retain power, removing opponents with a “shocking” number of alleged extrajudicial killings.

Read: Venezuela death squads kill young men, stage scenes

Victims are arrested and shot, with crime scenes manipulated to suggest they resisted police, a report says.

The UN urges Venezuela to end the “grave violations of economic, social, civil, political and cultural rights”.

Nicolás Maduro’s administration has not yet officially responded to the report.

Venezuela has in the past dismissed human rights allegations as “lies”.

Mr Maduro is locked in a political battle with opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

Mr Guaidó, head of the country’s National Assembly, declared himself interim president in January and has the backing of more than 50 countries, including the US and most of Latin America. Mr Maduro retains the loyalty of most of the military and important allies such as China and Russia.

Some four million people have fled Venezuela since 2015, according to the UN, amid a severe economic crisis that has resulted in high unemployment and chronic shortages of food and medicine.

What is the UN report and what does it allege?

The report is scheduled to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council on Friday.

It is based on “558 interviews with victims and witnesses of human rights violations and the deteriorating economic situation” from January 2018 to May 2019.

Its most damning findings relate to the number of deaths the Venezuelan government has ascribed to resisting arrest.

That figure for last year was 5,287, with another 1,569 up to 19 May this year.

Referring to these figures as “unusually” and “shockingly” high, the report says: “Information analysed by Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights suggests many of these killings may constitute extrajudicial executions.”

The UN says witnesses reported how the Special Action Forces (FAES) “manipulated the crime scene and evidence. They would plant arms and drugs and fire their weapons against the walls or in the air to suggest a confrontation and to show the victim had ‘resisted authority’”.

It adds that the UN “is concerned the authorities may be using FAES and other security forces as an instrument to instil fear in the population and to maintain social control”.

The BBC’s Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says the report report paints a dark picture of Venezuela, in which unmarked black vans arrive in poor neighbourhoods, masked officers get out, round up young men and shoot them.

    What are the other allegations?
The lengthy report also covers areas such as economic and social rights, and social programmes and policies.

Problems of access to justice – which the report says the government has asked for help with – are also tackled.

The UN concludes it believes “there are reasonable grounds to believe that grave violations of economic and social rights, including the rights to food and health, have been committed in Venezuela”.

On accusations of torture it says detainees have been subjected to “one or more forms of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including electric shocks, suffocation with plastic bags, water boarding, beatings, sexual violence, water and food deprivation, stress positions and exposure to extreme temperatures”.

    Wasn’t there a recent high-profile case?

Yes. A navy captain arrested over an alleged plot to assassinate President Maduro died in custody with his lawyer alleging it was as a result of torture.

The death sparked outrage, coming just days after the visit to Venezuela by UN human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet.

Local media say the official autopsy reported that the body of Rafael Acosta, 49, had showed signs of having been subjected to extreme force, had been starved of oxygen and had suffered severe beatings and electrocution.

Two men, Lt Ascanio Tarascio and Sgt Estiben Zarate have been charged with murder.

    What’s the current political situation?

President Maduro has intensified a crackdown on the opposition since a failed military uprising against him in April led by Mr Guaidó.

Since the failed rebellion, described by Mr Maduro as part of a US-orchestrated coup, many opposition MPs have lost their parliamentary immunity and some have been arrested.

While Mr Guaidó’s parliamentary immunity has been lifted, he has so far not been jailed, even though he recently said he did not rule out the use of military force to oust Mr Maduro from power.

  • Somalia cuts diplomatic ties with Guinea over Somaliland

Somalia has announced the severing of diplomatic ties with West African country Guinea. The decision was announced in Mogadishu today after a cabinet meeting.

The development is linked to relations between Guinea and Somaliland the semi-autonomous region of Somalia. Somaliland continues to increase its bid for international recognition, much to chagrin of Mogadishu.

Leader of Somaliland flew to Conakry earlier this week according to officials on official invitation from the president of Guinea, Alpha Conde.

Foreign Minister of Somalia Ahmed Isse Awad whiles announcing the decision also cautioned other countries against violating the sovereignty and unity of Somalia.

Formerly a British protectorate, Somaliland merged with former Italian Somaliland in 1960 to create Somalia.

But it seceded and declared itself independent in 1991 as Somalia plunged into chaos after the fall of autocrat Siad Barre. Somaliland has been pushing for independence ever since.

It has its own government based in the self-appointed capital of Hargeisa, its own army and prints its own currency.

It is also considered much more stable than the rest of Somalia, which is plagued by clan disputes, corruption and a violent insurgency waged by the Al-Shabaab militant group.

  • Dozens of migrants feared dead after boat capsizes off Tunisia

A boat carrying at least 86 refugees and migrants has capsized off the coast of Tunisia with most feared drowned.

Some of the four initial survivors told the Tunisian coastguard on Thursday the boat sank off the town of Zarzis, Tunisian Red Crescent official Mongi Slim told Reuters news agency.

Read: Ghana aim to maintain dominance over Tunisia

Tunisian fishermen came across the sinking boat and were able to pull four survivors out on Wednesday night, but could not find any of the other passengers, said Lorena Lando, head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tunisia.

Eighty-two people remain missing in the incident, which comes a day after a deadly air attack on a Libyan detention centre killed at least 44 migrants.

Al Jazeera’s Sarah Khairat, reporting from a refugee camp in Zarzis where the survivors were brought, said the vessel was heading from the west of Libya to Europe when it capsized. The four survivors were all men – three from Mali and one from the Ivory Coast.

The Ivory Coast national later died and two of the others are in hospital.

Slim told dpa news agency the boat set sail from Libya on Monday.

Earlier this week, another boat from Libya made it to the Tunisian port of Sfax with 65 people on board.

Libya is one of the main transit countries for migrants and refugees fleeing war and poverty as they try to reach Europe.

The war-torn country has become a hubfor human trafficking rings that often send migrants off to Europe in vessels that are not seaworthy.

Between January and June this year, 555 migrants died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, according to the IOM.

Last year, there were 924 deaths. The peak came in 2016 when 2,911 people died in the crossing.

    Sea rescue

Meanwhile, a sailboat belonging to Italian charity Mediterranea rescued 54 people, including pregnant women and children in distress off the Libyan coast, the charity said on Thursday.

“All 54 survivors have been rescued and are now aboard,” Mediterranea tweeted. “Among them 11 women [three pregnant] and 4 children … Happy to have rescued 54 lives from the hell of Libya. Now we need a safe port.”

Italy’s far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini – who has tried to close Italian ports to migrant rescue vessels – swiftly tweeted that Mediterranea’s 18-metre sailboat Alex should take those rescued to Tunisia.

“Otherwise we will activate all procedures to prevent Italy being a port of arrival for human traffickers,” Salvini said.

Italian authorities last week seized a vessel belonging to German aid group Sea-Watch and arrested its captain after it entered Lampedusa port in Sicily unauthorised with dozens of rescued migrants on board.

  • UN reports Libyan guards shot at migrants fleeing air raids

The United Nations says it has information that Libyan guards opened fire on migrants and refugees trying to flee air strikes that killed at least 60 people and wounded 77 others at a detention centre near the capital, Tripoli.

But security guards at the bombed-out facility interviewed by Al Jazeera denied the accusations on Thursday.

Read: Libyan coast guard says it has intercepted 15,000 migrants in 2018

Two attacks hit an unoccupied garage and a hangar holding about 120 people in the centre in Tajoura, east of Tripoli, late on Tuesday, a report from the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

“There are reports that following the first impact, some refugees and migrants were fired upon by guards as they tried to escape,” it said.

Bodies were still being recovered from the rubble, the report added, suggesting the death toll from the unclaimed air raids could rise. At least six children were among those killed.

About 500 people are still being held at the Tajoura detention centre, with four Nigerians set for release to the Nigerian embassy on Thursday and a plan for 31 women and children to be sent to the UN refugee agency’s departures facility in Tripoli.

Libya is one of the main departure points for African migrants and refugees fleeing poverty and war to reach Europe by boat, but many are intercepted at sea and brought back by the Libyan coastguard – with the approval of the European Union.

    Weapons workshop

Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from the detention centre, said guards at the facility refuted the claims made in the UN’s report.

“Supervisors here said we are not allowed to speak to the migrants because they have been hearing so many stories made up by them … so that humanitarian organisations can come and take them to Europe,” Abdelwahed said.

One person held at the facility told The Associated Press it was unclear if the guards fired at the migrants or in the air.

Others told the AP that they were conscripted by a local militia to work in a weapons workshop inside the detention centre, alleging they were sent day and night to toil in the adjacent facility.

They requested their names and nationalities not be published, fearing reprisal.

“We clean the anti-aircraft guns. I saw a large amount of rockets and missiles, too,” said one person held for nearly two years.

Abdelwahed said the guards denied any weapons or ammunition were stored on the site, however.

“We know that this detention centre is not far from unused military camps, but it is not close to any ammunition depots and is far from the front line,” he added.

    GNA pins blame on Haftar

Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) blamed renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar’s forces for the air raids, which UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame said “could constitute a war crime”.

Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) denied the accusations, saying it targeted a nearby militia’s position but did not attack the hangar where the migrants were being held.

The LNA in April launched an offensive to capture Tripoli from the GNA, which is supported by an array of armed groups.

The 60 killed in the bombing of the detention facility marked the highest reported death toll from an aerial bombardment or shelling since Haftar’s forces launched their offensive.

“The number of civilian casualties caused by the conflict has almost doubled as the result of this single attack,” the OCHA report said.

Interior Minister Fathi Ali Bashagha said the Tripoli government was considering closing all detention centres for migrants and releasing them.

    ‘This hell of Libya’

Despite the international outrage following the air raids, aid groups said there were no plans to evacuate the migrants, however, and nowhere in Tripoli is safe.

“We are not aware of plans to relocate the migrants that remain in Tajoura,” said Safa Mshli, a spokeswoman for the International Organization of Migration.

“Migrants intercepted or rescued at sea should not be returned to Libya, where they will face the same inhumane conditions,” Mshli added.

What can be done about the refugees trapped in Libya’s fighting?

An estimated 6,000 migrants and refugees are held in detention centres across Libya, despite the UN repeatedly warning the sprawling North African country is not a safe place for them and calling for their release.

One of the migrants recounted a nearly two-year odyssey in which he fled war in his native country and was passed from one trafficker to another until he reached the Libyan coast.

He boarded a boat that was intercepted by the coastguard, which later transferred him to Tajoura, where he was wounded in Tuesday’s bombings.

“I fled from the war to come to this hell of Libya,” he said. “My days are dark.”

  • David Nicholls: Writing new novel ‘completely terrifying’

It’s 10 years since David Nicholls’ novel One Day became a publishing phenomenon – a word of mouth sensation that has sold more than five million copies around the world. Five years later came Us and now five years after that, he’s back with a new novel. But can he repeat the success with Sweet Sorrow – a story of falling in love for the first time?

Nicholls is under no illusion that whatever he does next, a book he wrote a decade ago “will always be the most popular and successful thing” he is known for.

One Day was a phenomenon that not only sold five million copies around the world but was also made into a movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

But its story that followed two characters from their graduation to their early 40s by visiting them every St Swithin’s Day, cast a long shadow, says the author.”The success of One Day made it very hard to write,” he tells BBC News.

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess took on One Day’s star roles Emma and Dexter “Every time I sat at my desk I thought, well this isn’t as good, this isn’t as funny… it isn’t going to sell as many copies.

Finally though, he thinks he has written a “better” book. It is called Sweet Sorrow and it is a coming of age story about finding one’s first love. It’s Nicholls’ fifth novel. The others, along with One Day, are Starter For Ten, The Understudy and Us.

But despite his considerable experience, he found writing Sweet Sorrow “completely terrifying”.

“It doesn’t get easier with each book. I don’t feel any more confident now than when I started.

“You’re revealing part of yourself. You’re drawing on something from deep inside and that’s exposing.”

Sweet Sorrow is narrated by Charlie, a man in his 30s looking back on a single, life-changing summer, when he was 16.

Nicholls said he wanted to “try and remember how it felt at 16, try and capture that on the page, the kind of dizzying excitement and confusion of it all”.

But Nicholls is 52 and admits he was “anxious about authentically portraying what it feels like to be 16”.

“I mean it’s a long time ago and I’ve always thought the further you get away from your childhood, maybe the more distant you feel.”

Nonetheless, although he has never kept a diary, he says he has a “vivid recollection” of that time in his life. “It’s tough, it’s difficult, you feel lonely.” Not that he was a rebellious teenager.

“I was quite a kind of nerdy, disciplined, conservative kid. I wanted to get really good exam results. I wanted to do well. I was very rarely badly behaved. I was pretty diligent.”

The novel also explores mental illness. Charlie’s father has depression and the book examines the impact on both of them.

“The book isn’t particularly autobiographical but it’s extremely personal and heartfelt,” says Nicholls.

“You draw on things that you feel very profoundly and personally and things that affect you very strongly, without recreating anything from real life. So there’s very little in the novel that actually happened. But there are lots of things in the novel that preoccupy me, that occupy my thoughts constantly.”

Sweet Sorrow is set in 1997- a time when “no one was really prepared to name and face up to and deal with” depression. Nicholls thinks that “is many people’s experience then and now”.

“Now I think people are much more open to talking about their mental health… and there’s less of a taboo,” he adds.

Nicholls knows he is “lucky”. He has enjoyed the kind of success that most authors can only dream about. His books have been published in 40 languages. His novel Us, the follow-up to One Day, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

He is also in demand as a screenwriter. He won a Bafta for Patrick Melrose, his adaptation from the novels of Edward St Aubyn, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

He has written the screenplays for most of the film adaptations of his own novels, including One Day and Starter For Ten.

And he is currently adapting Us for a four-part BBC television series, which starts shooting later this year.

But if there is a film of Sweet Sorrow, Nicholls is determined that he will not be writing the script.

“I’m at the stage now where I’d love someone else to do it because adaptation involves a certain amount of violence… you really don’t want to take the kind of drastic action that’s required to make it work in a different medium.

“You don’t necessarily have the objectivity. Often you’re drawing on your own memories and experiences and so you can’t see clearly enough to make the kind of cuts and changes that are required.

“And so my hope is that I will never adapt another of my own books.”

He says it is also “time-consuming” and distracts him from writing novels. “I’d love to write more fiction.”

There is only one problem. “I just don’t have any ideas… I’ve said everything, there’s nothing else left to say.

“But I hope soon… there will be something else.”

  • Nii Lante slams Isaac Asiamah for using ‘tax payers money’ to fly fans to Egypt

Member of Parliament for Odododiodio constituency Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye has blasted Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah for defying the Government’s white paper on the 2014 World Cup Commission of Enquiry.

The former sports minister believes using tax payers money to sponsor fans to Egypt for the 2019 AFCON is wrong following the recommendation of the white paper.

Read: Commey will remain inspiration to budding talents Isaac Asiamah

The White Paper released by the government on the Dzamefe Commission report in 2014 stated that the nation should not commit state funds to send supporters to tournaments.

It adds: “Funding by private sponsors should be encouraged”.

In an interview with asempa fm on Thursday, Mr Vanderpuye says the move smacks of disrespect of the white paper.

“I don’t support sending supporters to football tournaments with the tax payer’s money,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have sent supporters to Egypt if I were the sports minister,I would have respected the white paper.”

Mr Vanderpuye believes the decision to send supporters to support the Black Stars at the tournament defies the recommendation of the 2014 Government white paper on.

Hon Vanderpuye spent 10 months as a sports minister under the Mahama admnistration till their NDC party got voted out in the 2016 election.

But he argues the performance of Mr Isaac Asiamah is sending Ghana “back” to it’s trouble days in sports.

“The sports minister is going to use our money to send supporters on excursion in Egypt,” he said.

“We have over 1000 Ghanaians living in Cairo alone ,so why send supporters from Ghana?

“If this is the man who took over from me then we have gone back”.

It is not known how many fans the NPP government has so far sponsored to Egypt but believes it is deliberate attempt to sponsor party footsoldiers to the tournament all in the name of supporting the Black Stars.

  • Netflix to cut back on showing smoking in its original shows

Netflix says it’s going to cut back on how often smoking is shown in its original shows.

It’s after a report said programmes on the streaming site showed “much more tobacco” than on US TV or cable.

Netflix says smoking in programmes aimed at younger people will only be allowed for “reasons of historical or factual accuracy”.

In other shows it will only be shown if “it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or character-defining”.

Netflix says it “strongly supports artistic expression”.

Read:Netflix announces dedicated UK operation at Shepperton

It added: “We also recognise that smoking is harmful and when portrayed positively on screen can adversely influence young people.”

The new rules came as report was released into cigarette use on screen by the US group Truth Initiative – which campaigns for people to lead “tobacco-free lives”.

It compared the number of times tobacco products were seen in different series of Netflix shows that are popular with 15-to-24-year-olds.

They included Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things and House of Cards.

The report found – in all the Netflix shows it studied – cigarettes were more common in the later series than the earlier series.

The report also found, on the whole, smoking is being shown more on Netflix than on popular shows on US cable TV – like The Big Bang Theory and The Walking Dead.

Even in those shows, though, the rate is still rising.

Truth Initiative does say it only focused on Netflix because it’s so popular – and shows on other streaming services, like Amazon Prime, show similar trends.

“Smoking on the small screen has gone from common to nearly unavoidable,” the report says.

“While smoking in TV programmes has not been studied as extensively as tobacco imagery in movies, it is reasonable to conclude a similar harmful impact is possible.”

Read:WWE champion, Kofi Kingston and John Cena to star in WWE/Netflix movie

In the UK, shows broadcast on TV has to follow rules put in place by an organisation called Ofcom.

They say that smoking in shows likely to be seen by under-18s “must generally be avoided and in any case must not be condoned, encouraged or glamorised”.

And even in shows designed for adults it can be controversial.

More than 70 people complained about seeing smoking on Love Island in 2017 and the issue even got raised in the House of Lords.

The show has since got rid of its on-screen smoking area.

  • Joss Stone ‘deported from Iran’ on last stop of world tour

British singer Joss Stone says she has been denied entry to Iran – the last country she had to visit as part of a five-year, 200-stop “total world tour”.

The 32-year-old posted a video from Kish Island in which she said: “We got detained and then we got deported.”

She said that she knew Iran did not allow women to perform solo concerts.

“However, it seems the authorities don’t believe we wouldn’t be playing a public show, so they have popped us on what they call the ‘blacklist’.”

“After long discussions with the most friendly, charming and welcoming immigration people, the decision was made to detain us for the night and to deport us in the morning,” she added. “Of course I was gutted. So close yet so far.”

Kish Island, which is in the Gulf off the southern Iranian coast, is the only place in Iran that foreigners can visit without needing a visa.

She said immigration officials at island’s airport had encouraged her to go to the Iranian embassy in the UK to “sort it all out and come back”.

Earlier this week, Stone posted pictures from what she said was a trip to Yemen, which has been devastated by a four-year civil war.

She said she was given permission to perform before an audience of men and women by the governor of al-Mahra province, which borders Oman and is far from the fighting between Yemeni government forces and the rebel Houthi movement.

The 198th stop on her world tour was Tripoli, Libya, where the UN-backed Libyan government is battling forces loyal to the warlord General Khalifa Haftar.

Stone set out in 2014 to visit and perform in every country in the world, and to collaborate with local musicians playing indigenous music.

The UN currently has 193 member states and two observer non-member states.

Manchester City says Spain midfielder Rodri is a “perfect fit” for the team after moving from Atletico Madrid for a club record £62.8m.

Rodri, 23, joins on a five-year deal and is City boss Pep Guardiola’s second signing of the summer after defender Angelino rejoined from PSV Eindhoven.

“Rodri has proven himself as a hugely talented, young midfielder,” said director of football Txiki Begiristain.

He added: “He works hard defensively, makes himself available to receive the ball and uses it well when in possession. We are confident he will be a success.”

Rodri will wear the number 16 for City, the same number worn by Sergio Aguero when he first moved to the Etihad from Atletico.

The fee for the Atletico academy graduate surpasses City’s previous record of £60m in signing Riyad Mahrez in 2018.

“What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad,” said Rodri.

Read:PSG stunned by controversial last-gasp Manchester United penalty

“It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times.

“It’s a style that excites me, as do the club’s ambitions.”

Rodri rejoined Atletico in May 2018 after three years at Villarreal and made 34 league appearances as they finished second in Spain’s top flight.

He made his international debut in a friendly against Germany last year and has made six senior international appearances.

City had made Rodri one of their main targets this summer, with Guardiola keen to sign a defensively minded player to bolster the Premier League champions’ squad.

  • GHC200,000 bail for cybercrime suspects

The cybercrime suspects whose arrests sparked heated debate have been granted police enquiry bail.

Two staffers of Modern Ghana an online portal were arrested by National Security operatives last week while another Yaw Obeng Manu of Peace FM was picked up on Tuesday.

The National Security is said to have handed the case over to the police and Mr. Obeng Manu is said to have been granted GH¢200,000 enquiry bail.

The National Security arrested the journalists because they suspect they are behind the hacking of some prominent media portals in the country.

Read: I was never beaten, tortured ModernGhana reporter contradicts editor

While the National Security Secretariat arrested Emmanuel Ajarfor and Emmanuel Britwum before their transfer to the police, Yaw Obeng Manu was referred to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command where notice of his arrest was relayed to him formally.

The next process was for him to be granted bail as investigations into the case continued.

    Different statements

Having earlier said he was arrested because of an opinion piece carried on Modern Ghana portal, Emmanuel Ajarfor said on Peace FM later in the evening that the security agents questioned him about how he accessed Peace FM emails.

He reportedly pointed at Obeng Manu as the source of the access to the Peace FM platform, having furnished him with the password of the channel.

Emmanuel Ajarfor the man who accused the security agents of torturing him with electric shocks and elbowing said his colleague, Emmanuel Britwum, was introduced to Modern Ghana by Obeng Manu. He added that Obeng Manu employed him as a reporter at the Publisher newspaper before he ended up at Modern Ghana online portal.

    Discredits denial

Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri said it is untrue the denial by the National Security Secretariat that he was not tortured.

    Medical examination report

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) medical examination report on suspect Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri is yet to be received.

Torture, the statement pointed out, is not part of the architecture of the National Security Council Secretariat in the current dispensation.

The statement was categorical in pointing out that the suspects were engaged in inappropriate cyber activities.

    Partisan flavour

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has jumped into the fray originating from the ongoing investigations into the hacking accusations against the suspects.

NGOs engaged in upholding media freedom have described the investigation as an attempt at gagging journalists.

    Cybercrime in Ghana

Cybercrime cost Ghana US$105 in 2018 through an assortment of extortions, hacking and others, Dr. Gustav Yankson, Director of the Cybercrime Unit of the CID, said recently.

Read: Peace FM management questioned over Modern Ghana hacking claims

“With regard to the cybercrime cases we received last year, fraud was number one constituting 60 per cent and followed by various forms of intrusion while extortion placed third,” he disclosed.

The law enforcement agency had earlier served notice of its readiness to deal with cybercrime which currently is a major issue confronting even the developed countries.

Many youths have perfected the art of hacking into servers of major entities that they appear sometimes to be ahead of the security agencies.

Many Ghanaians are watching with keen eyes how the current case is going to pan out especially against the effort to give the subject human rights and weaken it. The NDC is feasting on it with gusto.

The security agencies have not given details about developments as regards the Obeng Manu case, with yesterday being a typical example.

  • Zoomlion, Auditor-General clash in court

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has filed an appeal against the decision of the Auditor General to disallow and surcharge the private company over contracts it has executed for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) through the Ministry of Health (MoH).

After auditing the accounts of the NHIA for the period 2007-2018, the Auditor General issued a disallowance and a surcharge against Zoomlion in the sum of GH¢184,901,650.

According to the Auditor General, Zoomlion was paid the amount between 2007 and 2018 without due process.

Read: Zoomlion clashes with Auditor-General over Gh¢184 million surcharge

Not satisfied, Zoomlion went to the High Court to appeal against the decision of the Auditor General, claiming it had been denied the right to be heard before being surcharged.

The company attached numerous documents it claimed showed the existing contracts for the jobs done.

However, after perusing the documents, lawyers for the Audit Service made findings of fraud against the waste management company.

According to them, “Zoomlion intentionally added copies of activity reports and documents belonging to other contracts between the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and 10 allied companies of Zoomlion, including Meridian Waste Management Services, ABL Environmental Engineering Ltd and Volta Waste Management Ltd, among others.

“In the process, monthly reports of other contracts being executed by the appellant and its sister companies with other government agencies were intentionally added to the NAMCOP documents presented for payments and the amounts therein duly paid by NHIA as claims under NAMCOP.”

    Appeal

Moving the motion for appeal in court yesterday, lawyer for Zoomlion, Osafo Buabeng, said that the Auditor General breached the rule of natural justice when he went ahead to make adverse findings against the waste management company without giving it the opportunity to respond to the allegations.

According to him, there was a management letter issued by the Audit Service detailing the alleged infractions which was copied to the NHIA and the MoH but Zoomlion, being the affected company, was never given a copy.

    Contract

Mr. Buabeng argued that the basis of the relationship between Zoomlion and MoH can be found in the contract executed between these two entities, adding that the contract was in respect of malaria control mosquito spraying nationwide which was executed in August 2009 for four years and was renewable.

Read: Auditor General refused us fair hearing Zoomlion

He admitted that “after the expiration of the contract, the parties maintained their contractual relations although expressly the contract was not renewed.”

The lawyer, however, contended that “by maintaining their respective contractual relationships both the Ministry of Health and the Zoomlion impliedly renewed the contract. The appellant continued to work pursuant to the contract and the Ministry of Health acting through the NHIA also continued to verify the work and paid the appellant up to 2018.”

Relying on a Supreme Court decision, Mr. Buabeng said that by virtue of the contractual relationship between the two entities, there existed a contract which was in force from August 2012 to August 2018.

The court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, adjourned the matter to July 15 for the lawyer to conclude his argument.

Lawyers for the Audit Service would then respond on the same day.

  • Hong Kong protests: Jeremy Hunt warns China against ‘repression’

The UK foreign secretary has continued to warn China not to “repress” violent protesters in Hong Kong.

A group of activists occupied Hong Kong’s parliament on Monday over a controversial extradition bill.

Jeremy Hunt told the BBC he “condemned all violence” but said the Chinese government should listen to the “root causes” of protesters’ concerns.

It comes after China warned the UK not to “interfere in its domestic affairs” and labelled the UK “hypocritical”.

  • Russia submersible fire ‘was in battery compartment’

Russia says the main cause of the deadly fire on board a submersible which killed 14 crew on Monday was a fire in the battery compartment.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu also said the top-secret military craft was nuclear-powered but the reactor had been isolated from the fire.

Fourteen crew members died of smoke inhalation as a result of the fire on the submersible in the Barents Sea.

The craft is now at Severomorsk, the main base of Russia’s Northern Fleet.

“The main cause has been established – it was a fire in the battery compartment, and then it spread,” Mr Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin in a meeting on 4 July, according to the Kremlin website.

Read:Two killed, seven injured as Russian plane makes emergency landing

“The nuclear power unit on the vessel has been fully isolated and nobody is in that section. The crew took all the necessary measures to protect the unit, and it is in full working condition. This leads to us to hope that in quite a short time the vessel can be put back into service.”

Severomorsk was also home to the Russian Kursk nuclear submarine, which sank in 2000 killing 118 sailors.

The Kremlin had previously kept details about the vessel confidential, adding that it was in “the interests of the state and state security”.

The crew on board were involved in exploring the Arctic seabed, Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported.

In 2000, Mr Putin was heavily criticised for the way he handled the Kursk submarine disaster. Media reports at the time showed the president enjoying a holiday at a Black Sea villa as families of the victims demanded information about their relatives.

Accidents involving underwater vessels are rare. Here are some of the most serious:

The Argentine navy’s ARA San Juan submarine with 44 crew disappeared during a routine patrol in the South Atlantic in 2017. The wreckage was found a year later

All 70 crew aboard China’s Great Wall Ming-class submarine suffocated in 2003 when a diesel engine malfunctioned, consuming the vessel’s oxygen supply

Russia’s Kursk submarine sank in the Barents Sea in 2000 after a torpedo exploded during an exercise, killing all 118 on board, including 23 who survived the blast but died due to a lack of oxygen

The USS Scorpion sank in the Atlantic in 1968, possibly because a torpedo exploded, killing the 99 crew

The USS Thresher sank during diving tests in 1963, killing all 129 on board – the biggest submarine death toll in history.

  • Tutankhamun: Egypt demands auction of bust be cancelled

Egypt has called on auction house Christies to cancel the sale of a 3,000-year-old bust of ancient boy-king Tutankhamun.

The country’s foreign ministry claims that the bust was probably stolen during the 1970s from a temple.

The 28 cm (11in) bust is due to go on sale in London on Thursday and is expected to fetch more than £4m ($5m).

The brown quartzite relic comes from a private collection of ancient art that Christie’s last sold for £3m in 2016.

In a statement, Christies said: “The object is not, and has not been, the subject of an investigation.”

It said it would never auction an object over which there were legitimate concerns.

Christies has also published a chronology of the relic’s owners for the past 50 years. The bust is understood to have been acquired from German aristocrat Prinz Wilhelm von Thurn between 1973 and 1974.

The auction house also said that the bust’s existence had been known for a considerable time and it had been on display for a number of years.

Egypt’s former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass told AFP news agency: “We think it left Egypt after 1970 because in that time other artefacts were stolen from Karnak Temple.”

Egypt introduced laws in 1983 banning the removal of artefacts from the country.

  • Africa Cup of Nations: Tanzania must learn from exit – Amuneke

Tanzania’s head coach Emmanuel Amuneke says the Africa Cup of Nations has been a real “eye-opener” for the Taifa Stars following an early exit in Egypt.

Tanzania, who competed in their first tournament since 1980, failed to progress to the knock-out stages and finished bottom of the group with three defeats.

For the former Nigeria and Barcelona winger, it was a telling reminder of how much football has evolved on the continental showpiece event.

“It’s an eye-opener for Tanzanian football. We’ve not been at the tournament since 1980, a lot has happened in 39 years and the game has changed and continues to change,” Amuneke told BBC Sport.

“What’s important is to adapt to these changes and improve as a team. There are lots of lessons to pick.

“Our greatest undoing was our lack of experience. We are not experienced enough because we are used to playing football without so much pressure.

“But we’ve seen in this tournament that when you have the ball, a lot of teams put the pressure on you.”

The East Africans showed promising signs against neighbours Kenya and despite never troubling Senegal and Algeria, they were never embarrassed.

Amuneke, who coached Nigeria to the 2015 Under-17 World Cup title, said his team would take some valuable lessons from their first big-tournament experience.

“We didn’t show confidence or feel comfortable when in possession of the ball,” Amuneke said.
