Today, GhanaWeb revisits a compelling story from the life of Jojo Mills-Robertson, the Ghanaian actor famed for his role as ‘Sofo Joe’ in the beloved ‘Efiewura’ series. Exactly one year ago, Mills-Robertson shared a harrowing tale of betrayal and deceit from his first trip to the United States.
On May 22, 2023, Mills-Robertson recounted how a close friend betrayed him during his initial visit to the US. Without the required documents, Mills-Robertson entrusted his savings to his friend’s account.
However, he soon discovered that his friend had spent $1,200 of his money.
Despite his friend’s advice to avoid carrying cash, the friend continually depleted the funds. When confronted, the friend repeatedly assured Mills-Robertson that he would return the money.
“One day, he called me and asked me to come with him to the bank to get my money. Excitedly, I sat in the car. When we got to a traffic light, despite the red light being on, my friend still crossed at a high speed, and I wondered why,” Mills-Robertson narrated in Twi.
As a police vehicle began chasing them, Mills-Robertson’s friend instructed him to put his hands on the dashboard, citing the strict discipline of the police. Upon being stopped, the police questioned the friend about running the red light.
The friend handed over his driver’s license, but when the police asked about the car’s records and any illegal items, the friend pointed at Mills-Robertson, accusing him of being undocumented.
The police officer, however, questioned the relevance of Mills-Robertson’s status to the traffic violation. When Mills-Robertson admitted he had no documents, the friend labeled him a criminal.
The officer responded that immigration issues were not his jurisdiction and reprimanded the friend for the traffic violation.
The policeman advised that if the friend truly believed Mills-Robertson was a criminal, he should report him to the appropriate authorities. He then issued a citation to the friend and let them go.
Upon returning home, Mills-Robertson decided to visit his nephew in Virginia, leaving his friend’s house and never returning.
This poignant story highlights the challenges and treacheries Mills-Robertson faced during his first US visit, offering a stark reminder of the difficulties immigrants often endure.
