Wake up if you think NPP will win December polls – NDC

An aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has critiqued the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) approach to the upcoming 2024 elections, suggesting it resembles a strategy of self-amusement.

Her remarks came in response to Joseph Osei Owusu’s claim that available research shows the NPP is poised to win the election.

Madam Mogtari countered this assertion, stating that only the NPP’s self-generated polls and research support the idea of their victory.

Highlighting the disparity in polling data, she noted that reputable polls consistently favor Mahama for the presidency and project a significant parliamentary majority for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a social media post, she expressed her skepticism, stating, “tickle yourself and laugh.” If not, why would their party’s leading figures be on a deliberate self-serving run across the country, spreading inaccurate and fake research outcomes to tickle themselves and their followers?

Mogtari further emphasized the facts: since 2022, Dr. Bawumia has consistently lagged behind Mahama in credible research studies, including two conducted by the National Identification Bureau (NIB).

She also pointed out that the NDC holds a substantial lead over the NPP in parliamentary seats, with districts like Atwima Mponua, Offinso North, and Dome posing significant challenges for the ruling party.

  • You can’t define me as a one term president, I know my worth – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

You can’t define me as a one term president, I know my worth – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reacted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s characterization of him as a “one-term president.”

The president’s comments were made during a period of increasing political tension, particularly as Mahama opted out of a debate with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a governance forum in Accra, Mahama defended his record, asserting that his influence on Ghana’s progress extends far beyond the duration of his presidency.

He rejected the idea that a single term diminishes his significance, stating, “This is not a quest for witch hunting, but it is a genuine desire by Ghanaians to see public officers held to account for the public trust that was placed in them. Fighting corruption requires courage and principle. I will ensure meritorious appointments and allow the systems of transparency and accountability and fated space to work.

Mahama settles for Q&A interview after snubbing IEA debate

Former President John Dramani Mahama has declined to participate in the upcoming IEA Presidential Debate, opting instead for a solo interview with the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

The IEA, recognized for organizing presidential debates, had announced plans several months ago to host a debate featuring the leading candidates from Ghana’s two major political parties: Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While Dr. Bawumia expressed his willingness to participate in the debate, the NDC firmly rejected the invitation. Mahama has publicly stated his refusal to engage in the debate, despite pressure to do so.

According to reliable sources, Mahama has reached an agreement with the IEA for a Question and Answer (Q&A) session, which will take place without Dr. Bawumia.

A flyer circulating on social media appears to confirm that this session is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, November 6.

In the meantime, Vice President Bawumia has reiterated his challenge to Mahama for a one-on-one debate in advance of the December 7 elections.

  • Akufo-Addo undermining independent institutions -Mahama

    Akufo-Addo undermining independent institutions -Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised alarm about what he perceives as the deliberate undermining of independent institutions in Ghana by the Akufo-Addo administration.

He specifically pointed to the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Judiciary during his address at the Good Governance Forum on October 31.

Mahama expressed grave concern about the erosion of institutional integrity and its implications for the country’s democracy. He warned that the ongoing weakening of these vital institutions presents a significant threat to good governance and accountability.

Highlighting the importance of an independent judiciary and a credible electoral body, Mahama argued that these components are essential for guaranteeing fair elections and justice for all citizens.

If elected in the upcoming elections, Mahama pledged to prioritize the restoration of good governance, emphasizing his commitment to working alongside civil society and the media to strengthen transparency and accountability within government institutions.

In his concluding remarks, he called upon Ghanaians to unite in the pursuit of a stronger democratic framework, insisting that the country deserves leadership that upholds the principles of good governance.

“For almost eight years, the government has deliberately and systematically worked to weaken and undermine the independence of the Judiciary, the electoral commission, and the Audit Service for their own parochial purposes.”

“Our human rights record including press freedom has suffered just as the fight against corruption has. Journalists have been hounded and cowered into silence and self-censorship.”

“But I can assure you that there’s hope. The NDC, under my leadership, is ready and willing to work with Ghanaians, our key stakeholders, civil society, our traditional leaders, and our development partners to restore good governance to our beloved country,” he stated.

  • Your questions are a distraction – Mahama replies Bawumia

Your questions are a distraction – Mahama replies Bawumia

Flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has reacted to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 50 questions.

Mahama stressed that the primary focus of the 2024 elections must be the condition of the Ghanaian economy, rather than the questions posed by Bawumia.

While addressing supporters at a rally in the Savelugu constituency during his campaign tour on Wednesday, Mahama urged the Vice President to address his five questions directly instead of dodging them.

“In 1992, there was an election in America, it was between Bill Clinton and George Bush Senior, at that time, the American economy was in recession, like the way the Ghanaian economy is in crisis today and people were talking about immigration, talking about all kinds of useless things.

“Do you know what the Clinton people said? ‘It is about the economy, stupid.’ Today, I’m repeating those words, this election is about the economy, stupid. It is not about all those other useless things about who built how many compost plants. Answer the five simple questions,” he challenged the NPP Flagbearer.

Mahama said Dr Bawumia’s questions looked like “he has just learnt those things in the 50 questions the way we used to learn ‘blah blah black sheep’, ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall’”.

He pointed out that he had posed specific questions to the Vice President regarding the economy, but instead received irrelevant inquiries in response.

“I asked you five simple questions on the economy, that’s all. You go and respond with how many compost plants did you build, how many this did you build, that is not what the issue is in Ghana today” he noted.

Mahama stated that the Vice President could simply answer those five questions without requiring a debate.

“And you can’t hide behind the debate, you don’t need a debate to answer the five questions. When you asked Amissah Arthur 170 questions, you did not agree to go and debate for him to answer them” he added.

While addressing a gathering in Tatale, former President Mahama posed five specific questions to Vice President Bawumia concerning the Ghanaian economy. These inquiries focused on critical issues such as the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar, the country’s debt stock, soaring inflation rates, the debts of the Central Bank, and Bawumia’s earlier lectures on economic matters.

In reply, Dr. Bawumia countered with a set of 50 questions, highlighting various events that occurred during Mahama’s administration.

  • Rawlings told me Mahama can never be president – Ernest Owusu-Bempah

Rawlings told me Mahama can never be president – Ernest Owusu-Bempah

A Deputy National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has revealed that the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings, expressed strong doubts about John Dramani Mahama’s chances of ever becoming president again. According to Owusu-Bempah, Rawlings shared this sentiment with him just months before his passing.

In a video shared by Onua FM on X, Owusu-Bempah recounted being invited by the former president for a private conversation.

He said, “Former President Rawlings, two to three months before his death, told me that Mahama will never be president of this country. Rawlings, and I’m saying it. I can’t sit here and say what I don’t know about a dead person. Never, because he is my father.”

He further said “One afternoon, I was in Ghana Gas and he sent for me and I went. One afternoon; it was about 4:15. He asked me – he usually ask me what is going on in the country, the grassroots. He asked, do you believe Mahama will ever be the president of this country again? Due to what Mahama has done, his personality, and what Rawlings said behind the scenes which I cannot say here, He Rawlings didn’t believe that John Mahama can ever become president ever again in Ghana. I am telling you, I, Owusu-Bempah, everybody knows I was very close to the former president. It was between me and him.”

These revelations follow a prophecy by Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, during a meeting organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, on October 1, 2024. During the event, titled “Mahama Fellowships with Clergy,” Rev. Owusu-Bempah prophesied that God had placed the future of Ghana in Mahama’s hands, owing to his good heart.

“When the prayers were ongoing, the Lord revealed to me that because of Mahama’s good heart, He has entrusted the country to him once more. Nothing can stop this,” Rev. Owusu-Bempah declared.

My govt will not promote LGBTQ+ activities – Mahama assures

The National Democratic Congress’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, received an enthusiastic response during his meeting with Christian community leaders on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

This gathering, aimed at fostering a time of prayer, worship, and fellowship with pastors and church leaders, exceeded expectations for the former president.

While addressing the attendees, Mahama spoke candidly about same-sex relationships, affirming his Christian beliefs and asserting that LGBTQ+ practices have no place in the church.

He pointed out that the current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has not significantly contributed to addressing the issue, particularly by not signing the anti-gay bill into law.

Reassuring the clergymen, Mahama emphasized that, should he regain the presidency, there would be no tolerance for such practices in any form.

Read exactly what he said that got the entire room of religious leaders on their feet below:

“My fathers and mothers in Christ, the current legal impasse created by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration on the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act, which was passed by Parliament, has set a dangerous precedence for our governance. The constitutional directive for action by the president are quite clear and need not have resulted in this stalemate.

“As I’ve publicly stated, I’m a proud member of the Assemblies of God Church and my faith does not support same-sex marriages or relationships (loud applause for over 20 seconds) nor does it support human-animal relationships, or does it allow people to change their gender as they wish. This is a fundamental belief that I hold and is grounded in my faith. I, therefore, assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+++++ and all the pluses will have no place in our schools and communities under my administration,” he said, followed by the entire room of pastors standing to their feet in great and loud applause.

  • Spiritual barriers against Mahama’s presidency have been lifted – Charles Owusu

Spiritual barriers against Mahama’s presidency have been lifted – Charles Owusu

The former Head of the Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission, Rev. Charles Owusu, has announced that a spiritual ban on former President John Dramani Mahama, which hindered his chances of returning to the presidency, has now been lifted.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on September 27, 2024, Rev. Owusu emphasized that while the ban has been removed, the outcome of the upcoming 2024 elections will ultimately decide Mahama’s political future.

He further revealed that these insights regarding Mahama’s situation were divinely communicated to him.

“Just like in football, a red card means they’ve placed a ban on you. When the ban is lifted, you can join your team to play, but whether you’ll score depends on the match.

“I had said here in the past that there was a ban on Mahama and that he would not be able to become president again, and that ban was spiritual, not physical. Now the ban has been lifted, but whether he can become president or not, the elections will determine that,” he said.

“I am not afraid of what I am saying because I am a prophet of God, so whatever God says is what I re-echo.”

Vote for me and I’ll serve you 24/7 – Mahama vows

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to tirelessly work to improve the lives of Ghanaians if elected as President in the 2024 general elections.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, September 28, after his visits to Ablekuma North, Central, West, and South constituencies the previous day, Mahama also promised to prioritize transparency and honesty with the people of Ghana.

“I made two solemn pledges to the people: First, as President, I will work 24/7 for you. This is not just a promise but a commitment I take to heart. Your aspirations, needs, and concerns you shared during my interactions will guide my actions, and I will be there for you, always.

“Secondly, I will always tell you the truth. Transparency will be my guiding principle in good times and challenging times. When things go well, I will celebrate with you. And when we face difficulties, I will be honest about the situation.”

Mahama also reaffirmed his commitment to implementing a 24-hour economy policy, aimed at creating jobs, stimulating economic growth, and addressing the rising costs of essential goods such as food and fuel.

  • NPP shying away from “breaking the 8” because of my number 8 position – Mahama

NPP shying away from “breaking the 8” because of my number 8 position – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has confidently proclaimed himself as the bearer of the number 8, urging those who intend to “break the 8” to substantiate their assertions.

During his campaign tour, Mahama addressed artisans at the Konkonpe Spare Parts Line in the Ablekuma North Constituency of Greater Accra.

He highlighted his newfound connection to the number 8, which has become a significant symbol in the current political discourse.

“They are now shying away from breaking the 8 because I hold the eight,” he said

Mahama’s statements serve as a direct challenge to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is seeking to “break the 8” by securing a third consecutive term in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“If they say they want to break the 8, let them try and do so for me to see, because I am now the holder of the number 8,” Mahama asserted.

Alongside his symbolic message, Mahama assured the artisans that the next NDC government would implement a fixed-rate system at Ghana’s ports.

He emphasized that this measure would create a transparent and efficient process for importing goods, ultimately benefiting both local businesses and importers.

Your second coming is unnecessary, God has blessed you enough – Fmr Minister tells Mahama

Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who previously served as the Minister for Zongo and Inner-Cities Development, has provided an advice to former President John Dramani Mahama regarding his intention to run for re-election.

While speaking to Imams, Zongo Chiefs, and settler communities in Donkro Nkwanta, located in the Nkoranza South Constituency of the Bono East Region, Dr. Abdul-Hamid shared his perspective that if he were in Mahama’s position, he would have opted for retirement by now, given the many blessings he has received from God.

He highlighted that among the 32 million Ghanaians, Mahama is unique in having held a variety of high-level public roles, including Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and President.

“If the former President were a good Christian, he would have retired by now because the good Lord has been very good to him,” he added.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid remarked, suggesting that Mahama should be thankful for his extensive service rather than pursue another presidential term.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid also pointed out the remarkable opportunity the 2024 Presidential election presents, as it could lead to a president from Northern Ghana.

He expressed his support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, arguing that Bawumia is a preferable choice, as he has the potential to serve two full terms, unlike Mahama, who is constitutionally limited to just one more term.

Furthermore, he stressed the significance of accountability in leadership, suggesting that Dr. Bawumia would be more effective as he would be incentivized to seek re-election, whereas Mr. Mahama, lacking that option, might not be as motivated to govern effectively.

  • Stone me at Independence Square if Mahama wins December polls – Pastor

Stone me at Independence Square if Mahama wins December polls – Pastor

Founder of the Hezekiah Apostolic Prayer Ministry, Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei, has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face defeat in the 2024 elections.

According to him, the NDC has spiritually fallen out of favor with God, and as a result, will lose the upcoming election.

During a panel discussion on Top TV, Apostle Adjei emphasized that if his prophecy fails, he would willingly offer himself to be stoned. He boldly stated, “You see, every year when we are going into an election, I write a book and predict whoever would win the election. And whoever I project is the one that wins.”

He also warned that unless the NDC repents and changes its ways, they will continue to lose elections. Furthermore, he urged the party to reconsider its leadership, suggesting that John Dramani Mahama should be replaced if the NDC intends to win future elections.

When asked what would happen if the NDC manages to win, Apostle Adjei remained steadfast in his prediction, saying, “They should stone me. I will volunteer and come and stand at Independence Square for Ghanaians to stone me because it is impossible… I am saying if the NDC is able to enter the Jubilee House to change its name again from Jubilee House, stone me.”

  • Be measured in your language, 2024 election is just a competition – Bawumia tells Mahama

Be measured in your language, 2024 election is just a competition – Bawumia tells Mahama

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to adopt more respectful language in his public statements.

Addressing a campaign rally in Accra on September 16, Dr. Bawumia criticized Mahama for allegedly referring to clergy, civil society organizations (CSOs), and traditional leaders as “hypocrites” due to their perceived silence on national issues.

He expressed concern that such rhetoric diminishes the dignity associated with Mahama’s previous presidential role.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of respecting these groups, which he believes play a vital role in national unity and development.

He noted that Mahama’s recent comments, including insults directed at religious leaders and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), are inappropriate for someone who once held the highest office in the land.

“You all know I am competing with the former president to win this election. I think he has realised that he will lose the elections so he is always angry. I heard he insulted some pastors, chiefs, imam and CSOs saying they are hypocrites. He even insulted the ECG.”

“Today he said the NPP is a foolish government. Why would a former president say something like this? We must have some level of decency in the language we speak as politicians.”

  • NDC Demo: Don’t join us if you are violent – Mahama

NDC Demo: Don’t join us if you are violent – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama Dramani, has urged calm and non-violence as the party embarks on nationwide protests today over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) management of voter register discrepancies.

Ahead of the demonstrations, Mahama stressed that the protest is intended to be peaceful, calling on participants to refrain from violence.

“This is a peaceful demonstration. It is not a violent demonstration. It is a peaceful demonstration. And so if you know you cannot be peaceful, don’t come.

“We want only the people of peace to join us,” the NDC flagbearer said, underscoring the party’s commitment to ensuring order throughout the protest.

The NDC’s concerns stem from what they allege are serious flaws in the voter register, discovered during a recent exhibition exercise. Although the party has demanded a forensic audit of the register, the EC has declined to undertake one, prompting the NDC to mobilize protests across the country.

Protesters will march to the EC offices in all 16 regional capitals, while party leaders will present petitions at the EC headquarters and Parliament in Accra.

During his address, Mahama urged protestors to cooperate with the police and avoid any confrontations. “The police are here to protect us; they are our friends. We have no reason to attack them,” he noted, urging demonstrators to go home peacefully after delivering the petitions.

The NDC hopes this demonstration will lead to electoral reforms ahead of the elections, with thousands expected to participate nationwide in defense of what they see as the integrity of the electoral process.

  • Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has defended the party’s decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC), citing concerns about the voters’ register.

The NDC has voiced apprehensions regarding potential discrepancies in the register, warning that inaccuracies could jeopardize the credibility of the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking during a community engagement as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mahama urged Ghanaians to back the NDC’s push for a credible and transparent voters’ register, emphasizing that this would ensure a fair electoral process.

Mahama clarified the party’s stance, saying, “And I just want to make a point that our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issue with the Electoral Commission is that we want peace during and after the election.

“So when we raise issues about the electoral process, it is because we want the EC to sit up and do its job so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process.

He further elaborated, “And the only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it. And that is why on the 17th of this month, that is next Tuesday, we are doing a demonstration at the EC office. And that demonstration is not only NDC, it is all Ghanaians who are willing to join the demonstration so that we go and tell EC to sit up and do its work properly so that we have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of that demonstration.”

Mahama also announced an upcoming demonstration, saying, “On the 17th of this month, next Tuesday, we will demonstrate at the EC office.

This protest isn’t just for the NDC—it’s for all Ghanaians who want to join. Our aim is to demand that the EC steps up and does its job properly, ensuring a peaceful election. That’s the sole purpose of the demonstration.”

  • I will provide stable power to support 24-hour economy – Mahama

I will provide stable power to support 24-hour economy – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to create a robust and reliable power infrastructure to underpin his proposed 24-hour economy policy if elected.

This initiative aims to foster a business-friendly environment where services and operations are available around the clock, driving economic growth and enhancing productivity.

Addressing energy sector stakeholders in Accra, Mahama reiterated his commitment to advancing clean energy as part of a broader energy transition strategy.

He assured that his administration would focus on expanding clean energy sources and ensuring that power generation aligns with anticipated demand while meeting reserve requirements for a stable and uninterrupted power supply.

Mahama also promised to increase the proportion of clean energy in the national power mix to 10%. This goal will be supported by fiscal and regulatory incentives designed to promote non-hydro renewable energy sources.

Additionally, he proposed implementing a time-of-use tariff system, which would offer businesses reliable and affordable power for round-the-clock operations.

Mahama committed to transparent management of revenues from the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) and strict adherence to the cash waterfall mechanism to ensure accountability in the energy sector. He also pledged to collaborate with local entrepreneurs to minimize technical and commercial losses in the energy system, aiming to boost overall efficiency and reliability.

“We will systematically align power generation with forecasted demand and address reserve requirements. My administration will increase clean energy consumption in line with our energy transition agenda and provide the necessary fiscal and regulatory incentives to reach a 10% share of non-hydro renewable energy in our generation mix,” Mahama stated.

“Other key interventions will include implementing a time-of-use tariff system to offer affordable and stable power for businesses to operate around the clock,” he added.

  • DRIP has potential but is poorly executed – Mahama

DRIP has potential but is poorly executed – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has promised that a future NDC government will revamp the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) started by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He criticized the present implementation of DRIP, claiming it is poorly executed and lacks proper planning.

During a media event in Sunyani, Bono region, on Wednesday, 11th September 2024, Mahama expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of roads in the region.

He pointed out that many roads are either inadequately constructed or remain incomplete, reflecting the shortcomings of the government’s approach to improving road infrastructure.

“You just don’t go and bring that number of road equipment; you haven’t employed operators, so many of the districts do not have grader operators or roller operators to operate the machines, so the machines are still standing there. Aside from that, they didn’t make a budget for fuel,” he said.

“It is a good idea but not well thought through. They hurriedly brought in the equipment for political gimmicks without doing the necessary organisation, so when we come we will take the concept, but we will advertise and recruit the operators, we will train them on how to maintain it, and we will make sure that the district assemblies have the budget to run those equipment.

…We will identify the roads; every district will have to identify the emergency roads to be worked on, and the government will budget for it so that we can give them the money to go out and work on those roads,” he emphasised.

Sit up and fix ‘faulty’ voter register – Mahama tells EC

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Electoral Commission (EC), to uphold its values to avert potential violence in the upcoming December polls.

In a recent gathering, Mahama expressed disappointment over the EC’s just concluded Voters’ Exhibition Exercise, which was intended to allow eligible voters request updates, challenge entries, and remove the names of deceased individuals, among other tasks.

The exercise was also to give voters the opportunity to locate their designated polling stations.

However, Mahama has alleged that the EC‘s exercise lacked the necessary attention and proper motive, citing corrupt activities during the process.

He cited instances where certain individuals could not locate their names, while others had their names transferred without the individuals’ consent.

“The Electoral Commission opened the register for people to inspect their names I am sorry to say there is a lot wrong with that register. The EC has to sit up so that we don’t have any confusion on election day. The EC is an important institution in us having peaceful elections in this country, so if the EC is listening to me, you better wake up,” he added.

He mentioned that the recent actions by the Commission undermine the country’s democracy, as it is gradually failing to fulfill its mandate as key institution.

Mahama further emphasized that a peaceful general election dependent on the EC’s professionalism and credibility.

The flagbearer of the NDC encouraged the Commission to work tirelessly and rectify any anomalies that could hinder the success of the election.

“You are not doing your jobs properly. A lot of people cannot find their names, other people’s names have been transferred without their knowledge. People have registered for proxy without using their biometric cards, people who have done multiple registration still have their names on the register,” he stated.

Bawumia is practically promoting Mahama – NDC

Former Greater Accra Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of assuming the role of an opposition leader.

According to Mr Coker, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Bawumia, is actively criticizing and vowing to dismantle the policies of the Akufo-Addo government, of which he is a prominent member.

In his remarks on XYZ TV on August 15, 2024, Mr Coker suggested that by attacking the policies of his own administration, Bawumia is effectively positioning former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s candidate, as a more capable leader compared to the current government.

“Now that Bawumia has become the opposition leader, he doesn’t say anything about his government. He says, ‘I would cancel E-Levy when I am voted into office,’ but his government is implementing it now; he says he would abolish the betting tax, but the tax is being taken by this government.

“He says he would reduce electricity tariffs, but they are going up now under his government. When he comes, the dollar rate will go down, but the rate is going up now. So, Ghanaians must listen carefully. Here is somebody in the government who has now denounced his government, so the first thing he is saying is don’t vote for my government, and then don’t vote for me because the government I am part of is a failure,” he said.

He added, “Because if you are denouncing, if you are not able to tout the things your government has done, how can you come and seek the mandate of the people? So, he has shot himself in the foot. He is virtually telling Ghanaians to vote for Mahama.”

Mahama should not be given another chance to govern Ghana – Sir John to Ghanaians

The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Atwima Nwabiagya, John Kwame Duodu, (Sir John), has voiced strong objections against the re-election of former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Duodu, who also serves as the Ashanti Regional TESCON Patron and Deputy National Organizer for the Friends of Bawumia, 2008 Foundation (FoB-’08), argues that Mahama’s return to power would hinder Ghana’s development.

Duodu criticized Mahama’s tenure, asserting that his administration’s economic management was poor, leaving Ghana in a worse state.

“I can confidently tell you that the John Mahama administration would receive an F9 on any academic grading system for his performance as the president of Ghana”, Sir John argued.

He expressed concern that if Mahama were re-elected, the progress achieved under the NPP’s Akufo-Addo and Bawumia leadership would be undone.

Sir John emphasized that Mahama should acknowledge his past mistakes and apologize to Ghanaians for his previous economic mismanagement.

Furthermore, Mr Duodu accused Mahama of opportunism and inconsistency, citing Mahama’s 2016 statement that “four years is not enough for any president”.

Mr Duodu also suggested that Mahama’s re-election campaign is motivated by personal ambition rather than a genuine desire to serve the nation.

He highlighted various scandals during Mahama’s presidency, arguing that they continue to negatively impact Ghanaians.

To safeguard Ghana’s future, Sir John urged voters to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December elections.

He praised Dr. Bawumia as the ideal candidate to build on the NPP government’s successes and lead Ghana towards prosperity.

Sir John further defended Dr. Bawumia’s integrity, stating that he has no history of corruption, unlike Mahama.

He challenged anyone with evidence of corruption against Dr. Bawumia to come forward, noting that the NDC cannot make a similar challenge for Mahama due to his own corruption issues.

“The NDC cannot throw a similar challenge on President Mahama’s behalf because he has a history of corruption tag, he added.

I will ban mining in forest reserves – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to halt all mining activities in forest reserves if he wins the December 7 election.

Mahama criticized the practice of mining in these protected areas, emphasizing the need to preserve Ghana’s forests.

In a recent address to chiefs and elders in the Central Region, he underlined that these forests, some containing trees as old as 700 years, must be protected for future generations.

“We are going to stop all mining in forest reserves. Some of those trees existed when our ancestors were here. Some of those trees are 700 years old in those forest reserves. And our ancestors didn’t cut them. Our ancestors left them for us.

“We are going to cut them and what are we going to leave for our children? Savannah, desertification, destroyed environment. And so we must preserve the forest. Yes, it is attractive to get as much gold as we can but that is like cutting your nose to spite your face.”

Prof Opoku-Agyemang is a perfect choice for me – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has lauded his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for her exceptional legacy and leadership qualities, calling her a “worthy running mate.”

In his visit to the Central Regional House of Chiefs on July 30, Mahama praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s profound dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress.

He emphasized that her impact transcends mere achievements, deeply affecting many lives and contributing significantly to the nation’s development.

He said, “Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang’s legacy is one of unquestionable dedication, excellence and a deep commitment to the advancement of our nation. Her achievements are not just a number of projects, they represent lives that have been transformed, opportunities that have been created and a brighter future for Ghanaian youths.”

“Indeed, her achievements extend beyond these tangible milestones. Her dedication to service, her passion for education and her stoic unapologetic commitment to development make her an exemplary leader and a worthy running mate for me.”

Victims of Appiate explosion to be remembered a year on

Today, Friday, January 20, 2023, the Appiate Disaster Relief Committee will host a number of events to commemorate the victims of the mining explosion and honor the one-year milestone since it occurred.

Public Relations Officer of the Appiate Disaster Relief Committee, Thywill Quarshie, says a one-minute silence and prayers will be observed at midday today at the site of the Appiate Explosive Disaster.

Speaking to Citi News on the line-up of activities in memory of the 16 souls lost and surviving victims of the disaster, Thywill Quarshie, said the remembrance activities will begin with memorial prayers and a wreath-laying ceremony.

“At 9am today, we will move to the explosion scene where we will have experts in the mining industry, police, fire service, NADMO for lectures on safety”, he added.

The explosion occurred on January 20, 2022, after a truck carrying explosives owned by Maxam Limited got involved in an accident resulting in the explosion.

The Appiate disaster was one that destroyed a whole community. 14 persons lost their lives while hundreds sustained varying degrees of injury.

A committee was inaugurated to probe the disaster. It has subsequently presented its report to the government.

The government has fined Maxam company, which was responsible for transporting the explosives through its subcontractors $6 million.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, directed that $5 million of the amount be used in the rebuilding of the community.

The National Disaster Management Organisation with support from well-meaning Ghanaians, companies and organisations, has been taking care of the people by providing them with relief items and a temporary shelter.

Victims have over time been appealing for more relief items to cater for their needs.

Currently, the rebuilding of the community is ongoing.

The Appiate Support Fund, which was set up to mobilise adequate funds to rebuild the community destroyed by the fatal explosion, has received millions in donations so far.

  • The busiest economic week of the summer is over: Here’s everything we learned

The impact of these past seven days will reverberate for the next several weeks around the abandoned halls of Wall Street and Washington DC as politicos and investors retreat to the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard or wherever they summer.

Are we in a recession? It’s hard to say, but hopefully by September the knowledge we gleaned during this treacherous week will be fully absorbed, and our understanding of the US economy will be more clear.

So what are we working with here? Let’s recap.

    • The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by another 75 basis points. The market expected this move but it was still a historically large hike. The Fed’s actions increased the rate that banks charge each other for overnight borrowing to a range of between 2.25% and 2.50%, the highest since December 2018.
    • Key inflation gauges showed prices remain elevated. The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 6.8% in June — that’s the biggest 12-month move since January 1982.
    • Consumer spending was higher, which is typically a sign that the economy remains strong. This time, however, the increase is likely due to rising prices, not thickening wallets. Personal consumption expenditures increased 1.1% for the month, above the 0.9% estimate.
    • The economy shrank for the second quarter in a row. GDP contracted at an annual rate of 0.9%. That decline marks a key symbolic threshold for the most commonly used — albeit unofficial — definition of a recession as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.
    • Americans grew more pessimistic about the economy. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index decreased in July for the third straight month. About 43% of 3,000 respondents said they think there’s a greater than 50% chance that the US will fall into a recession in the next 12 months, while just 13% said that in April.
    • Home price growth slowed for the second straight month. Prices in May were still robust, clocking in 19.7% higher compared with the same month last year, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller National Home Price Index. But the market is cooling because of higher mortgage rates and concerns about inflation. In April, they grew by 20.6%.
    • Congress passed a $280 billion package to bolster the domestic chipmaking industry. The bill will increase the production of essential computer chips in the US to prevent future supply chain issues and increase competition with China.
    • Senators Chuck Schumer and Joe Manchin reached a $700 billion deal on a sweeping climate, tax and health care bill. The plan includes $370 billion in energy and climate spending, about $300 billion in deficit reduction, subsidies for Affordable Care Act premiums and tax changes.
    • 170 companies reported second-quarter results including Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), Meta Platforms (FB), Apple (AAPL), and Amazon (AMZN). Results were mixed, with many companies warning about inflation and slowing growth in the future. Still, markets managed to end the week and month higher.

That’s a lot to digest. Especially in a very persistent heat wave.

Unfortunately, we do have another data-heavy week before we get a break.

Earnings continue next week with Starbucks (SBUX), Uber (UBER) and Airbnb reporting.

We also expect the release of some important economic data: JOLTs (job openings) unemployment rates, and PMI, a key indicator of US economic activity, are all headed our way.

So hold off on the swimsuits and SPF for now. Or don’t, and bring the beach to your desk. Vacation is a state of mind right?

    Ducati takes on the world

My CNN colleague Jonathan Hawkins recently had the opportunity to sit down with Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali in Misano, Italy, where World Ducati Week drew roughly 80,000 avid fans and owners across three days.

The company, which is owned by Volkswagen, announced Friday that it brought in record revenue of €542 million ($552 million) in the first half of 2022 and boosted operating profits by about 15%.

But the chief of Ducati described a difficult mix of business conditions that have made it harder to meet a surge in demand for bikes.

Supply chain issues since the pandemic have been a “complete nightmare,” Domenicali said.

“It’s been a very complicated mix of everything,” he said, noting that the time it takes to get a container from Asia to Europe has doubled, while closures in China have made it tough to secure necessary parts.

Yet he pushed back on the idea that supply chains should become more localized, noting the pitfalls of reversing decades of globalization.

“When you do business for the whole world, you stay more connected,” Domenicali said.

Amid the uncertainty, the company does have an advantage. The cheap euro, which fell to parity with the US dollar in July for the first time in two decades, benefits exporters like Ducati, since it makes their goods cheaper for foreign customers.

“It’s a help,” Domenicali said, not a problem.

And he said the company, one of Italy’s best-known brands, hasn’t been shaken by the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government. Ducati has gotten used to executing its long-term plans without counting on the government, according to Domenicali.

  • Kim Jong-un says North Korea ready to mobilise nuclear forces

North Korea is ready to mobilise its nuclear war deterrent, its leader Kim Jong-un has claimed.

Speaking at a Korean War anniversary event, Mr Kim added that the country was “fully ready for any military confrontation” with the US, state news agency KCNA reported.

The comments come amid concern that North Korea could be preparing a seventh nuclear test.

The US warned last month that Pyongyang could conduct such a test at any time.

North Korea’s most recent nuclear test was in 2017. However, tensions have been rising on the Korean peninsula.

The US special representative to North Korea Sung Kim says it has tested an unprecedented number of missiles this year – 31 compared to 25 during the whole of its last record-breaking year, 2019.

In June South Korea responded by launching eight missiles of its own.

Although the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, North Korea claims it as a victory against the US. The annual “Victory Day” celebrations are marked by military parades, fireworks and dancing.

In his speech to mark the event, Mr Kim said nuclear threats from the US required North Korea to achieve the “urgent historical task” of beefing up its self-defence.

The US had misrepresented North Korea’s regular military exercises as provocations, he added.

Mr Kim also appeared to address reports that South Korea is moving to revive a plan to counter the North Korean nuclear threat by mounting precautionary strikes in the event of an imminent attack.

The so-called “Kill Chain” strategy, first elaborated a decade ago, calls for pre-emptive strikes against Pyongyang’s missiles and possibly its senior leadership.

Some analysts have warned it carries its own risks and could fuel an arms race.

At the Victory Day celebration Mr Kim said that South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol’s government and military would be “obliterated” if he carried out pre-emptive strikes.

    Presentational grey line

Is North Korea ‘on the brink of war’?

    Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, BBC News

Kim Jong-Un’s warning that the Korean peninsula is “on the brink of war” sounds extremely scary. But North Korean rhetoric is often fiery, especially on significant anniversaries.

What it indicates is just how angry the North Korean regime is about South Korea’s new President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Since taking office in May, President Yoon has laid out a new, more aggressive defence policy. It would allow South Korean forces to pre-emptively strike the North, if Seoul believes it is under imminent threat of a nuclear attack from Pyongyang.

This so-called “Kill Chain” strategy would allow South Korea to launch ballistic missiles and air strikes on North Korean targets, including taking out the North Korean command and control structures. In other words, attempting to kill Kim Jong-Un himself.

Pyongyang is also quite unhappy with the lack of engagement from Washington since President Biden replaced Donald Trump.

All of this could suggest we are headed towards some sort of deliberate escalation by the North.

Everyone now expects that Pyongyang will carry out a seventh underground nuclear test. Preparations have been underway at the Punggye-ri test site since March.

  • Climber, 82, close to completing epic Munro challenge

An 82-year-old man who set himself a challenge to climb Scotland’s 282 Munros after his wife went into full-time care is just days from reaching the final summit.

Nick Gardner, from Gairloch, in the Highlands, was devastated when Janet developed Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis.

The grandfather-of-four said he wanted something to keep him going.

He set off on his epic quest in July 2020, three months after his 80th birthday.

Two years on Mr Gardner only has eight Munros left to bag.

He said: “When Janet went into care it absolutely shattered me.

“We were incredibly close as a couple, she was the most wonderful and caring wife, mother and grandmother possible, and now she doesn’t recognise me.

“I was heading into some mental condition, so I thought I have to get myself a challenge, to pull me out.”

The former physics teacher had never climbed a Munro – a Scottish mountain that reaches a minimum of 3,000ft (914.4m).

And he gave himself 1,200 days, to complete the challenge while raising money for Alzheimer Scotland and the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS).

But, with his final summit planned for mid August, Mr Gardner is on track to finish in under 800 days.

He said: “I am so close to completing it, I really feel like a child in the run-up to Christmas. I have butterflies.”

Once he makes it to the finish line, Mr Gardner will have climbed more than 500,000ft (152,000m), the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest (8,848m) about 17 times.

He will also have walked 2,000 miles (3,218 km), a similar distance to hiking from Edinburgh to Greece.

One of his two daughters, Sally McKenzie, has nominated him to the Guinness Book of World Records for the oldest person to climb the Munros.

Mr Gardener joked: “I’ll probably cry when I make it to the end”.

With a compass in one hand and a map in the other, Mr Gardner said he loved the feeling of being on the hillside.

But he added that he was never truly on his own.

He said: “I am over 80, and I think it would be irresponsible to climb on my own at this age, so I always have people with me.

“I don’t climb in a rush, and after the first two or three Munros I just started stopping people on the hill to tell them what I was doing.

“People couldn’t believe it, and they started joining me and donating money.

“Now, when I am walking, I regularly hear, ‘Nick’ shouted.”

Image caption, The Black Cuillin is a range of high mountains, ridges and rocky pinnacles

Mr Gardner has developed immense respect for mountains.

“I have never conquered or beaten a mountain, I have climbed them,” he said. “If you start trying to conquer them, they will get their own back.”

Out of the 274 peaks he has scaled so far, Mr Gardner said completing the Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye about a month ago stuck out as his most physically challenging moment.

He said: “It’s hard for people to do in their 40s, let alone 80s. It was incredibly rewarding,” he said.

“I am not a religious person, but there is something almost biblical about it, certainly spiritual.”

Mr Gardner’s checklist for reaching Scotland’s highest peaks includes a head torch, waterproof clothing, a down jacket and a spare warm garment. But he said a map and compass were his essentials.

The remaining peaks for the intrepid grandfather are three in Knoydart: Ladhar, Mell Buidhe and Luinne Bheinn; four in Glen Dessary: Sgurr na ciche, Garbh chioche mhor, Sgurr nan coireachan and Sgurr Mor; and lastly, the 282nd summit at Cairn Gorm in the Highlands where he will be joined by friends and family for the final climb.

Mr Gardner’s target was initially to raise £10,000, but he is now on track to reaching £50,000.

He added: “I will keep walking when I’ve finished this challenge, as long as my legs can carry me.”

Craig Jones, chief executive of the ROS, will be joining Mr Gardner on the final climb and said the charity was “extremely grateful” for the fundraiser.

Kirsty Stewart, of Alzheimer Scotland, added: “His tremendous effort will help us continue to be there for people living with dementia, their families and their carers.”
