Nigerians have voiced their displeasure on social media, that the Headies Awards, the largest music awards show in the nation, were held in the United States rather than their home country.
For the second consecutive year, the 16th annual Headies Awards were held on September 3, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Since its inception in 2006, the event has been held annually in Lagos, Nigeria. It has now been relocated to the United States.
Rema, a Nigerian star, won four trophies for Best Male Artist, Digital Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Pop Single at the event’s conclusion in 2023, making him the biggest winner.
Asake and Burna Boy each received two trophies.
The Best West African Act award went to the popular Ghanaian musician Black Sherif instead of his contemporaries Camidoh and Gyakie.
Nevertheless, some Nigerians have questioned why the awards ceremony was held in the US rather than its native Nigeria, despite the noteworthy achievements.
Some of these critics asserted that there was an effort to cover up the scheme, while others charged that the organisers were making an attempt to win over the international community.
