The highly anticipated Chale Wote Street Art Festival begins in Accra today, August 21, and will bring together style, fashion, procession, and uplifting works of art in one place.
The week-long celebration, which kicks off with an all-white procession Monday evening, is anticipated by patrons as another exciting event.
All age groups will participate in the “remembrance walk,” which will leave from Christianborg Castle and travel through Osu Township and a few key streets.
Other events planned include art exhibits, local movie screenings, the theatre production “Na Wo Se Sn,” a live performance by top Ghanaian musicians, and a variety of thought-provoking engagements. On Sunday, everything will come to a head at Black Star Square.
The decision to move this year’s celebration to Osu and the Black Star Square was made because organisers anticipate a large turnout, just like in previous years.
Leading Ghanaian and international artists will present collections of their works that illustrate the Gold Coast’s long history of colonial invasion resistance as well as pieces that were influenced by the 1835 uprising of enslaved Afro-Brazilians.
Visitors can explore historic sites and buildings in addition to seeing the artistic creations of the artists to learn about the fascinating history of the Osu neighbourhood.
Chale Wote is described as “an exploration of the full spectrum of all genres of fine and performing art; giving a sunrise opportunity for less well-known art and artists” in addition to being an art and music festival.
In the coming seven days, keep an eye on this space for in-depth coverage of the Chale Wote experience.
