Bawumia to introduce local streaming platform for better revenue, royalties management for creatives

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced that Ghana is set to introduce its inaugural local music streaming platform in November.

While speaking to key players in the creative arts industry, Dr. Bawumia underscored the importance of developing a local solution that would enable Ghanaian artists to earn fairer financial compensation for their efforts.

“Spotify and other platforms are externally owned, so it’s not surprising that the payments to our musicians are very little,” he said, stressing that current platforms don’t provide substantial returns for artists in Ghana.

“The issue for us has been to ensure we have a local streaming platform where we can put all the catalogues from A to Z that we can find in Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the collaborative effort between MUSIGA, the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), music producers, and the private sector to make this platform a reality.

He explained that the platform is designed to help manage revenue, track royalties, and maximise opportunities for content creators.

“I’m very happy to let you know that the work has been completed,” Dr. Bawumia shared with enthusiasm.

“We are ready to launch the first local streaming platform for Ghanaian musicians and film producers next month, in November.”

This new platform is expected to provide a more equitable revenue model for Ghanaian creatives, allowing them to better track and collect royalties while creating opportunities for sustainable growth in the industry.
