Youth of Sefwi Akontombra in the Western Region took to the streets in protest, targeting Chinese-led mining activities that have plagued their community.
The situation escalated as protesters set fire to mining equipment and structures on-site, venting their frustration over environmental degradation and water pollution they attribute to these activities.
The protest, which initially started peacefully, quickly turned chaotic as tensions mounted.
Reports indicate that six gunshots were fired, leading to the injury of three individuals involved in the demonstration.
The injured were swiftly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, with their conditions reported as stable.
The youth’s anger stems from the extensive damage caused by illegal mining activities, particularly by foreign operators.
They argue that the land degradation and pollution of water bodies not only harm the environment but also endanger the well-being and future prospects of the community.
Local authorities have been urged to intervene and address the grievances raised by the youth, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to curb illegal mining practices while safeguarding the community’s interests and environment.
The incident has sparked discussions about the regulation and oversight of mining activities, highlighting the challenges faced in balancing economic development with environmental conservation in resource-rich regions.

If the Government had been bold enough to give the supervision of the Mining to the Youth of each District it would have been more Profitable to the country.
Such Groups would collect the Mining Levies and take a percentage instead of the Party thieves who call themselves Party Faithfuls.
