Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew, has issued a heartfelt apology for the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Despite being in Group B, the Black Stars failed to advance to the round of 16, managing only two points from three games.
The team suffered a 1-2 defeat to Cape Verde and secured 2-2 draws against Mozambique and Egypt, leading to an early exit from the competition for the second consecutive edition.
The lacklustre performance sparked criticism from Ghanaians, who expressed frustration over the team’s perceived lack of drive and patriotism.
In response to the backlash, veteran forward Ayew took to video to express a sincere apology for the Stars’ AFCON 2023 campaign.
He assured fans that the team is committed to restoring Ghana’s pride, promising to elevate the national flag to its rightful place.
“I would like to apologise for the results in the AFCON that we just exited. We know that we should have done better and that we should have brought better results to the nation. As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch.”
“For the playing body , we should have done better,” he added to the apology released exactly a week after Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 AFCON was confirmed.
