Tom Cruise is preparing to return for a third installment of the iconic “Top Gun” franchise.
A script for another chapter in the high-flying aviation series is currently in development at Paramount, according to a source close to the project.
While the film is still in its early stages, plans are being made for the sequel to follow the 2022 release of “Top Gun: Maverick” and the original “Top Gun” from 1986.
Although no deals have been finalized, the goal is to reunite the original film’s producers – Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Joseph Kosinski. Additionally, it is expected that Miles Teller and Glen Powell, Cruise’s younger co-stars from “Maverick,” will also return.
The script is currently undergoing development by writer Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote “Top Gun: Maverick.”
Paramount has chosen not to comment on the news, and representatives for Cruise have not responded to requests for comment from CNN.
The decision to develop another sequel comes as no surprise, considering the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The film became Cruise’s most successful film to date, earning nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and receiving six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, ultimately winning an Academy Award for sound.
