Prominent member of the Movement for Change (M4C) and husband of gospel musician Empress Gifty, Hopeson Adorye was arrested by the police on May 22, 2024.

The arrest follows statements Adorye made during a May 10 interview on Accra FM, where he claimed involvement in a plot to scare voters in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold by detonating dynamite in parts of the Volta Region during the December 2016 elections.

This action, he asserted, was intended to ensure a victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Adorye recounted, “Prior to the elections, we blasted dynamite in parts of the Volta Region, and that scared a number of people. When I finished casting my ballot in Tema, I drove to the Volta Region, and when I asked for the number of people who had voted and the expected number of voters, it turned out people did not come out to vote.”

According to myjoyonline.com, Adorye is currently assisting the police with their investigation into these claims.

M4C Supporters Protest Adorye’s Arrest

Following Hopeson Adorye’s arrest, supporters of the Movement for Change (M4C), aligned with Alan Kyerematen, gathered at the Ministries Police Station on May 22 to demand his release.

The supporters alleged that Adorye’s arrest was politically motivated.

One protester, captured on camera, questioned the legality of his detention and suggested political interference.

“Are we still in military rule or civilian rule? What is democracy about? We are here today; we are going to sleep with Hopeson Adorye here. If they are detaining Hopeson, then they have to detain every supporter of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen,” she said. She further claimed the government was trying to silence Adorye to prevent further damaging revelations about the party’s tactics.

Buaben Asamoa accuses government of political witchhunt

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, former Member of Parliament for Adentan, has accused the government of conducting a political witchhunt with Adorye’s arrest.

In an interview on Joy FM, Asamoa confirmed Adorye’s detention at the Ministries Police Station on charges of publishing false information.

“Hopeson Adorye is not about to run away from Ghana or from his home because the police intend to charge him with the publication of false information. So, to go to the extent of keeping him all day in the police station and bringing him over to the Ministries to detain him, you point fingers backward at yourself that there is something political at play and it’s not fair,” he argued. Asamoa emphasized, “This is obviously politically motivated, there is no doubt about that.”
