The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Tamale Technical University has instructed students to boycott all academic activities with immediate effect.
This forms part of efforts by the Council to get management of the school to address the exorbitant fees that have been imposed on students.
In a press statement dated March 17, 2023, the SRC noted that students would not participate in teaching and learning “until our legitimate concerns are met.”
According to the SRC President, Seidu John-Paul, the Council’s “intentions are not to disrupt academic works but rather improve on our facilities to enhance teaching and learning in the University.”

Parliament recently approved a 15% maximum increment in university fees from the previous academic year. Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) urged public universities to adjust their fees in this regard.
Students of Tamale Technical University, displeased by the decision, which they say was taken on the blind side of the Student Representative Council boycotted lectures on Friday, March 10, 2023.
They argued that the increment is not justified, considering that there are so many challenges in the school that have not been addressed.
The majority leader of the student’s Parliament, Abdul Razak Aziz said “management took this decision without us, which makes the outcome invalid. Per our laws, the SRC is supposed to be involved in such decisions. We thus do not recognise whatever decision they have taken.”
They resumed academic work hoping for a favorable decision but this has not been the case.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Yaw Adutwum, has directed the University of Ghana to comply with the 15 percent fee increment as approved by Parliament and not charge beyond the threshold.
