Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, made this announcement while embarking on a three-day inspection tour of the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Western Regions.

Honour Busia by voting for Bawumia – Napo tells Wenchi residents

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO has urged the people of Wenchi in the Bono Region to honour the legacy of former Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia by supporting the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.

During a campaign visit to Wenchi, NAPO paid tribute to the late Dr. Busia, laying a wreath in his memory and calling on the community to secure a victory for the party.

Wenchi, a town with deep ties to the NPP’s political tradition, holds historical significance as the birthplace of Dr. Busia, a key figure in the formation of the Progress Party, which later evolved into the NPP.

NAPO emphasized that voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, would be a fitting tribute to Dr. Busia’s contributions to the nation and the party.

Engaging with local chiefs, the clergy, Muslims, and residents during his tour, NAPO urged them to pray for the NPP and to provide guidance to the party in its service to the people.

He reminded the Wenchi constituency, traditionally an NPP stronghold until it was won by the NDC in 2020, of the need to reclaim the seat as a continuation of Dr. Busia’s legacy.

NAPO encouraged the residents to reflect on the achievements of the NPP government and to vote decisively for Dr. Bawumia and the party’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Kojo Frempong, in the December elections.

Mr. Frempong, in turn, expressed his dedication to reclaiming the seat for the NPP and called for the support of the chiefs and the people to ensure a resounding victory.

The Omanhene of Wenchi, Nana Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, praised NAPO for his contributions during his tenure in government and highlighted the challenges facing the community, appealing for continued government support to address these issues.

Drivers warned to adhere to traffic laws

Head of the Orthopaedic Unit at Wenchi Methodist Hospital in the Bono region, Emmanuel Denteh, urges road users to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent fatal accidents during the Easter holidays.

He emphasizes that the festive season sees increased travel, with drivers sometimes prioritizing profit over safety by speeding, overloading vehicles, and driving recklessly.

“I want to remind all road users, especially commercial drivers, of the need to be cautious on the road and strictly observe road traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents during and after the festivities,” he added.

Addressing JoyNews in Wenchi, Mr. Denteh voiced concern about the influx of accident casualties admitted to the Orthopaedic Unit with fractures, twists, and joint dislocations.

He attributed this surge to the festive season’s celebrations, during which many drivers indulge in alcohol consumption, leading to speeding and reckless overtaking.

“Alcohol and driving are never compatible and leads to destruction, so drivers and motorbike riders shouldn’t be intoxicated before driving.

“The thing is if you drink, do not drive, if you drive, do not drink,” he stressed.

Mr Denteh said, “There is a new practice where motorbike riders push their mobile phones into the crash helmet on the chin to keep conversing over the phone while riding, but this is very dangerous”.

He urged motorbike riders to be extra careful on the roads and use crash helmets to escape head injuries or even death during accidents.

He further stressed the importance of road signs and implored road users to let it be their priority, adding without knowledge of road signs, one cannot call him or herself a good driver.

He said road safety is a shared responsibility, calling on all stakeholders to play their roles to prevent the carnage on the roads in the country.

Wenchi cashew buying to pay levies, rates to Municipal Assembly

The Wenchi Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Wenchi Traditional Council in the Bono Region, has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with cashew-buying companies to pay rates and levies on every bag of Raw Cashew Nuts (RCNs).

This initiative was unveiled during an engagement with stakeholders in the cashew value chain aimed at enhancing cashew production, marketing, and transportation within the Wenchi municipality.

The gathering, which included representatives from the Cashew Buyers Association, Processors, and their agents, focused on devising strategies to boost revenue generation for the assembly.

Key topics discussed during the meeting included the framework for rate payment, registration procedures for cashew buyers and companies, calibration standards for cashew weighing scales, and transportation logistics managed by the Wenchi Cargo Transport Union and Cashew Buyers.

Chaired by the Paramount Chief of Wenchi, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoanpong Tabrako III, the stakeholders unanimously agreed on the necessity for all cashew weighing scales to be calibrated and certified by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

Additionally, it was decided that all cashew companies and affiliated agents must undergo registration and obtain a business operating permit from the municipal assembly.

Furthermore, cashew buying companies are mandated to obtain certification from the Tree Crop Development Authority.

In his address, Osagyefo Tabrako pledged to eradicate the menace of nomadic herdsmen and their cattle, which have been responsible for the destruction of cashew farms, thereby impeding cashew production and agricultural development in the Municipality.

He assured stakeholders of the Wenchi Traditional Council’s collaboration with the Wenchi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to address this issue effectively.

“The traditional council and MUSEC are serious about this cattle-herdsmen issue, so we will find a way to peacefully get them removed from our land immediately to protect crops,” he stated.

The Paramount Chief reiterated the importance of adding value to cashew production to enhance export earnings and generate employment opportunities for residents in the Wenchi municipality.

He pledged to allocate land for the construction of cashew warehouses, aiming to establish an industrial hub dedicated to cashew processing in the region.

Bono East Regional Verification Officer for the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Eric Akoto, provided insights into the calibration process for weighing scales and emphasized the importance of adhering to standards to ensure accurate results in the weighing of Raw Cashew Nuts (RCNs).

James Kwasi Oduro Asare, the Presiding Member of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, called upon cashew purchasing companies and agents operating within the area to collaborate with the assembly to foster growth in the cashew industry.

He urged all stakeholders in the cashew value chain to uphold the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, emphasizing its significance in advancing the cashew sector and increasing revenue generation for the assembly.

Your cattle are causing destruction in Wenchi; you have 7 days to relocate them – Chiefs tell herdsmen

The Traditional Council of Wenchi in the Bono region has issued a seven-day ultimatum to herdsmen, directing them to relocate their cattle.

This directive, endorsed by the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area, involves collaboration with chiefs, the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, and other authorities.

The decision stems from recent grievances raised by crop farmers and residents regarding the destruction of farms by the herdsmen’s cattle.

In an interview with Citi News, Nana Anye Amoanpong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief, expressed his concern over the matter.

The Paramount Chief stressed that coordinated efforts with the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, community leaders, and local farmers are underway to prevent the continued disruption caused by the cattle.

He emphasized the importance of finding effective solutions to protect the community from harm and preserve their agricultural activities.

“It is not something I am going to allow during my reign. They destroy the crops and farmlands. Wenchi is a farming area, and that is what the people mostly depend on. We boast of cashew, and it is this cashew that the cattle swallow. So, if the animals destroy our cashew, what are we going to boast of?”

“We are going to be in contact with the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, Nananom, and MuSec. We are in talks to see how best we can prevent them. The farmers are also included because most of them have their ways, so it does not affect anyone or soul. We need to have a way to prevent them from entering our community and harming anyone.”
