Phase II of Blekusu Sea Defence Project in Volta Region to check tidal waves kicks off

Government has awarded Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project to Amandi Holdings Limited to officially commence construction works aimed at protecting lives, homes, and livelihoods along the coastline.

After years of devastating tidal waves and urgent calls for intervention, residents of Agavedzi, Salakope, and surrounding coastal communities can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, made this known on Facebook.

Mr James Gunu revealed that Amandi has already arrived on site, gathering equipment and establishing an operational base at Azizadzi ahead of full-scale construction

“I’m pleased to inform you that the Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project has officially been awarded to Amandi. The company is currently mobilising and setting up its operational base at Azizadzi,” Mr. Gunu stated.

In anticipation of the project’s commencement, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), with support from Eximbank, has provided temporary housing for affected residents.

This gives residents a safe place to stay on higher ground, which helps protect them from danger and also ensures that construction works are done without interruption.

The regional minister also revealed that measures are being put in place to provide permanent accommodation for victims displaced by tidal waves

“We are working on a housing project which will serve as a permanent resettlement solution for displaced victims,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s concern for the victims, assured that food aid and medical care would continue to be provided.

News of the project’s finally taking off has sparked widespread joy among residents along the coast. The mood in Agavedzi and Salakopeis is one of excitement, with many describing the development as a breakthrough in their prolonged battle with the destructive sea.

Madam Yawo, a widow in Salakope who lost her home to tidal waves last year, expressed her joy: “We have waited too long for this. I thank God and the government. Finally, we can sleep in peace knowing help is on the way.”

Mr. Mawuli of Agavedzi added: “The sea has been eating our land every year. If this project is done well, we’ll have our lives back.”

Local leaders have entreated residents to cooperate fully with authorities and contractors to ensure smooth progress on the project. Mr Gunu also used the opportunity to express gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his consistent support of coastal protection efforts.

“On behalf of the good people of the Volta Region, I express my profound gratitude to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to the coastal protection project and for continuously standing with the people of Volta Region.”

The Blekusu Sea Defence Project, initiated during the Mahama administration, forms part of a broader government strategy to protect Ghana’s vulnerable coastal communities from rising sea levels and climate-induced disasters.

For years, lives and properties have been lost due to tidal wave activities in the southern part of the country. School activities have also been affected due to the natural occurrence. Students have in the past had to stay home to ensure their safety.

There have been calls from policymakers and stakeholders for the government to finally address the challenges.

Volta Regional Minister declares ‘state of emergency’ on coastal erosion

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has declared a state of emergency in response to severe coastal erosion that has displaced residents and destroyed properties in parts of southern Volta.

In the past week, powerful tidal waves have battered communities in the Ketu South Municipality, sweeping away homes and other structures.

Describing the situation as a national security concern, Mr. Gunu has called for immediate intervention to safeguard lives and livelihoods.

“I have actually made it a national security issue, houses have been washed away, cemeteries are gone and a lot of things and the psychological trauma that the people are going through including children and women calls for urgent action,” he emphasized.

He made the remarks at a meeting between the Volta Regional Security Council and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) at Tokor in the Ketu South Municipality.

According to Mr. Gunu, an assessment has shown that many of the affected communities are below sea level, making them highly vulnerable to further destruction.

“If nothing is done urgently and we allow the sea to cross the road continuously, the degree of devastation that we will see cannot be contained,” he warned.

As part of relief efforts, the minister distributed emergency supplies to over 510 affected individuals. He assured residents that the government was committed to addressing the crisis.

However, community members stressed that relief supplies were not a long-term solution. Instead, they called for the completion of the sea defence project to protect their homes.

“We don’t need rice or maize. All we need is for them to complete the sea defence so we can be safe and take care of ourselves,” said Makafui Atayi, a resident.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Gas shelter project, which was meant to provide 15 units of two-bedroom apartments for relocation, has stalled. Residents are hoping for its swift completion to aid a planned evacuation process.

X users react to Mahama requesting chiefs to be seated for greetings

President John Mahama’s recent gesture during his Thank You Tour of the Volta Region has sparked positive reactions from a section of Ghanaians on the X platform.

On Friday, while engaging with traditional chiefs, Mahama surprised many by requesting that the chiefs remain seated as they exchanged pleasantries, a move that contrasted sharply with the actions of his predecessor, President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The video of Mahama’s respectful interaction with the chiefs quickly gained traction on X, with users praising the president’s approach. The scene stood in stark contrast to a controversial incident involving Akufo-Addo in April 2024, which had gone viral and led to widespread criticism.

At the funeral of Alhaji Rashid Bawa in the Oti Region, President Akufo-Addo arrived to find the chiefs seated. He expressed displeasure and insisted they stand before he would engage with them, which led to a delay in their greetings. His actions were widely condemned on social media, with many questioning his respect for traditional leaders.

At the time, John Mahama, then flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had strongly rebuked Akufo-Addo, describing his behavior as disrespectful. “It was unbecoming of a president to treat traditional leaders in such a manner,” Mahama had remarked, expressing his disappointment.

In contrast, X users who saw the recent footage of Mahama’s interaction with the chiefs expressed admiration for the dignity and respect shown by the current president. Many took to the platform to highlight the differences in leadership styles, especially in terms of engaging with the country’s traditional authorities.

Here are some of the reactions from X users:

@NAkufoAddo togbe agorkorli come and see something for me.”

    “Nebuchadnezzar would have done opposite.”

“Respect. Unlike the other one that was forcing them to stand up and greet him”

Mahama’s ‘thank you tour’ to commence on Jan 24

President John Dramani Mahama is set to embark on a nationwide “Thank You Tour,” beginning this Friday, January 24, in the Volta Region.

The tour is part of the President’s initiative to personally express gratitude to Ghanaians for their overwhelming support and confidence in him during the 2024 elections.

The tour will kick off with a grand durbar in the Volta Region, where chiefs, queen mothers, opinion leaders, religious figures, labour union representatives, and key players from the informal sector will converge to welcome the President. The event aims to celebrate the collaborative spirit of the people and reaffirm their vital role in shaping Ghana’s development journey.

“This momentous event will aim to solidify the bond between the President and the citizens while celebrating their vital contributions to our nation,” a statement from the Presidency highlighted.

President Mahama’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises remains unwavering. Within two weeks of assuming office, he made history as Ghana’s first President to announce a full cabinet in record time, reflecting his resolve for effective governance.

“This swift action exemplifies his dedication to effective governance and his determination to address the pressing issues confronting the Ghanaian,” the statement added.

Ghanaians are encouraged to actively participate in the tour, which the Presidency envisions as a unifying and celebratory occasion. The Volta Region leg of the tour is expected to set the tone for vibrant engagements across the country.

“As we recognize and honour our fellow citizens’ invaluable support and trust, together, we will build the Ghana we want,” the statement concluded.

Ballot paper shortage affecting Volta, Bono and 5 other regions – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has indicated that other regions aside from Volta and Bono Regions are grappling with the shortage of ballot papers for the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Friday, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare mentioned Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West, Western, and Bono East as the regions experiencing ballot paper shortages.

“The shortfalls occurred in Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West, Western, and Bono East Regions. The Volta and Bono regions were no exceptions. As in the case of the Volta Region, the political parties were informed in writing, and the reprint was done to cover the shortfalls in those five regions.

“Why the noise about the shortfalls of only the Volta region? If the Commission has anything to hide, will it transparently call for a reprint of the ballots to make up for the shortfalls?

“The Commission urges the general public, especially political parties to disregard mischief by persons whose only objective is to malign the commission and sow a seed of mistrust and doubts. The memo in circulation demonstrates the commission’s resolve to operate in a transparent and accountable manner.

“We entreat the general public and political parties to read memos carefully by the EC which may find their way on social media so as not to be swayed by persons whose sole agenda is to cause fear and panic and tarnish the image of the Commission ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections.”

This clarification comes in response to concerns by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that has described the shortage of ballot papers in the Volta Region as an avoidable error and has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to thoroughly investigate the issue.

Dr. Boamah reiterated the NDC’s demand for a detailed explanation from the EC to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. He stressed that proactive measures are essential to ensuring a seamless and credible election in December.

In a Facebook post on Friday, November 29, Dr. Omane Boamah called for transparency in addressing the issue, stating:

“The brief from our team makes it abundantly clear that the Electoral Commission of Ghana has committed another avoidable error. Our agents make it clear to us that the ballot statistics submitted to Act Commercial (printhouse) were complied with.

“This being the case, we call on the Electoral Commission not to sweep the cause of this avoidable error under the carpet. That Volta Region, our stronghold, is experiencing such avoidable errors in series is not lost on us.

“The Electoral Commission must explain to Ghanaians how the shortfall occurred,” he posted.

  • Everything you need to know about the contagious Rubella outbreak in the Volta Region

Everything you need to know about the contagious Rubella outbreak in the Volta Region

The Volta Region is currently facing a concerning rise in Rubella cases, alongside reports of measles outbreaks in several districts.

This surge has coincided with a significant number of children—9,495 in the first half of this year—missing their Measles-Rubella vaccinations, which has heightened public health concerns.

Rubella, a highly contagious viral disease, spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While most children and adults experience only mild symptoms such as fever and rash, the disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if a woman contracts rubella early in her pregnancy, there is a 90% chance that she will pass the virus to her fetus, leading to severe complications.

“Rubella in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, can result in miscarriage, fetal death, stillbirth, or infants with congenital malformations, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS),” the WHO warns.

    Symptoms of Rubella

In children, rubella typically causes mild symptoms, including a rash, low fever (below 39°C), nausea, and mild conjunctivitis. The rash, which appears in 50-80% of cases, usually begins on the face and neck before spreading down the body and lasts 1-3 days. Swollen lymph glands behind the ears and in the neck are the most distinctive signs of the disease. In adults, particularly women, rubella can cause arthritis and painful joints, with symptoms lasting from 3 to 10 days.

After initial infection, the rubella virus spreads throughout the body in about 5-7 days, with symptoms appearing 2-3 weeks after exposure. The period when an infected person is most contagious is usually 1-5 days after the rash appears.

The rubella vaccine is a live attenuated strain, and a single dose gives more than 95% long-lasting immunity, which is similar to that induced by natural infection.

Rubella vaccines are available either in monovalent formulation (a vaccine directed at only one pathogen) or more commonly in combinations with other vaccines such as with vaccines against measles (MR), measles and mumps (MMR), or measles, mumps and varicella (MMRV).

Adverse reactions following vaccination are generally mild. They may include pain and redness at the injection site, low-grade fever, rash and muscle aches.

    Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)

When a pregnant woman contracts rubella, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy, there is a high risk of passing the virus to the fetus, resulting in Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). According to WHO, children born with CRS can suffer from severe health issues such as hearing impairments, eye and heart defects, and other lifelong disabilities like autism, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid dysfunction. Managing these conditions often requires extensive and costly medical care.

Countries where women of childbearing age lack immunity to rubella, either through vaccination or previous infection, face the highest risk of CRS. Before the introduction of the rubella vaccine, up to four out of every 1,000 live births could result in CRS, the WHO adds.

Meanwhile, Regional Director of Health Service for the Volta Region, Dr. Chrysantus Kubio, has called for immediate measures to address the gaps in routine immunization and the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in the region. Speaking at the Stakeholders’ Engagement and Second Quarter Risk Communication Sub-Committee Meeting, Dr. Kubio emphasized the urgent need to increase demand for vaccines.

Dr. Senanu Dzokoto also highlighted the significant public health risk posed by failing to vaccinate all eligible children against preventable diseases. To address this, a national mass vaccination campaign is planned from October 2nd to October 6th, 2024, across all districts in Ghana, including the Volta Region.

    National Vaccination Campaigns

The upcoming vaccination campaign aims to stop the spread of rubella and measles and improve overall vaccination coverage in the region. This initiative follows the 2018 national Measles-Rubella vaccination and Vitamin A supplement campaign, launched by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Health Partners. The 2018 campaign, under the theme “Measles-Rubella Kills; Vaccinate Your Child Now for Good Life,” aimed to immunize over four million children aged 9 months to under 5 years across all 216 districts in Ghana.

  • 2024 election: NDC targets 85% of total votes in the Volta Region

2024 election: NDC targets 85% of total votes in the Volta Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has set an ambitious target to secure over 85% of the votes in the Volta Region in the upcoming general elections in December 2024.

Egypt Kudeto, the Volta Regional NDC Vice Chairperson, made this announcement during a 24-hour health walk in Kpetoe, located in the Agotime Ziope District.

Mr Kudeto called on party members to actively participate in the party’s campaign machinery to achieve this goal. He urged supporters to contribute financially to help mobilize logistics and fuel vehicles for campaign activities.

“We are appealing that you help us financially to fuel our vehicles for campaigns. So on January 7, 2025, people will be transported to Independence Square for the swearing-in because John Mahama is winning the presidential election,” he stated confidently.

Mr Kudeto added, “Volta Region, we are giving JM more than 85%-90% of total votes.”

Charles Agbeve, the Member of Parliament for Agotime Ziope, echoed Kudeto’s sentiments, predicting a significant victory for the NDC in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He forecasted that the NDC would win 150 seats in parliament. Agbeve highlighted the development projects undertaken by the NDC in his constituency, contrasting them with the lack of initiatives from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“John Mahama is in opposition but he made available bulldozers to reshape our roads. If he is not a nation-builder, then what is he? He is constructing roads in opposition, imagine what will happen when he comes to power,” Agbeve remarked.

Mr Agbeve also criticized the NPP for not constructing the Ho-Denu Road despite budgeting for it in 2021, allegedly because the region did not support them in the elections.

He emphasized that Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy would help curb rising unemployment rates in the country.

“For our children and the youth to have the opportunity to be enrolled into the security services, get employed, it is the 24-hour economy under John Mahama that can see this manifested. Let us vote for him,” he urged.

Additionally, Mr Agbeve expressed frustration over the delay in clearing medical supplies donated by Global Fund at the Tema Port, warning that the Ministry of Health would face repercussions if the supplies were not cleared within two weeks.

Edem Agbana, the NDC Ketu North Parliamentary Candidate, praised Agbeve’s efforts in parliament despite the challenges of being in opposition.

He assured that Agbeve would be appointed to a ministerial position when Mahama wins, enabling further development in the area. Agbana also warned against split voting, known as “skirt and blouse” voting, urging constituents to vote consistently for the NDC.

Malik Bosintale, the National NDC Deputy Communications Officer, encouraged party members in Agotime Ziope to work diligently to reduce NPP votes in the upcoming elections.

He called for vigilance on election day to protect the ballot boxes, promising that the next NDC government would reward the Volta Region with significant development projects.

The Volta Regional Youth Organizer, Mathias Alagbo, urged NDC members to become vocal advocates for the party, spreading its message at every public gathering. “We must talk about the hardships in the country and the good message of NDC at every public gathering. We need volunteers to work and criticism to win the elections,” he said.

Julianna Azumah Mensah, the Former Member of Parliament for Agotime Ziope, reiterated the NDC’s commitment to establishing a Women’s Bank to provide financial support for women entrepreneurs.

“Under a John Mahama government, we will have a bank solely for women traders. Women will take money from the bank for their businesses and take care of their families,” she declared.

Sena Nutekpor, the Agotime Ziope Constituency Youth Organiser, emphasized the importance of grassroots mobilization to ensure the NDC’s return to power.

“Former President Mahama must return to rescue this country. This year’s campaign and election are just like a community service to save Ghana,” he concluded.

Our roads are deplorable, take immediate action – Volta Region clergy tells Bawumia

Members of the clergy in the Volta Region have expressed deep concerns about the deplorable state of roads in various parts of the region.

These concerns were raised during a recent meeting with Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate for the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is currently touring the region.

The clergy highlighted the severe impact of the poor road network on the daily lives of residents, especially those in rural areas.

They emphasized that the lack of adequate infrastructure hinders economic activities, affects healthcare delivery, and poses significant safety risks.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Reverend Emmanuel Kofi Nyarko, a prominent figure in the Volta religious community, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“Our roads are deplorable, making it extremely difficult for us to carry out our pastoral duties and for our congregants to go about their daily activities. The government must take immediate action to improve these roads to enhance the quality of life for our people,” Reverend Nyarko stated.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the challenges posed by the poor road infrastructure in response to the clergy’s concerns.

He assured them that the government is committed to addressing the issue and mentioned that several road projects are already in the pipeline as part of the government’s broader infrastructural development agenda.

“The government is fully aware of the difficulties faced by the people of the Volta Region due to the poor state of roads. We are doing everything possible to ensure that these roads are constructed and rehabilitated. However, we also believe that involving the private sector in road construction can expedite the process and ensure higher quality,” Dr Bawumia remarked.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the potential of public-private partnerships in enhancing infrastructure development nationwide. He suggested that involving the private sector could bring in expertise, efficiency, and funding needed to improve the road network more swiftly and sustainably.

His remarks have sparked a debate about the private sector’s role in national infrastructure development. While some stakeholders support the idea, others are concerned about potential cost implications for end-users and the need for robust regulatory frameworks to ensure accountability and quality.

As part of his tour of the Volta Region, the Vice President is meeting with various community leaders, stakeholders, and residents to address pressing issues and reinforce the government’s commitment to regional development.

Roofs of over 20 public schools in Volta Region ripped off after rainstorm

The recent heavy rainfall in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region has caused widespread destruction in numerous public Senior High Schools and basic schools.

The storm tore off the roofing of structures in seven Senior High Schools and 18 basic schools, leaving students and non-teaching staff exposed to harsh weather conditions and disrupting academic activities.

During visits to the affected schools, Wisdom Adeti, the head of Anlo SHS, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address the pressing issue. Adeti highlighted the devastation caused, with crucial facilities such as ICT labs, physics labs, and dining halls severely damaged.

He stressed the need for support to repair the infrastructure and ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Students themselves joined the call for assistance, highlighting the significant damage caused by the storm and appealing to the government for aid.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Anloga District Assembly, Seth Yormewu, emphasized the severity of the situation and urged intervention from the Ministry of Education to effectively address the damage.

“It’s not easy. I’ve not seen some before especially on public schools. When you go to VOLTASCO, it’s one of the new senior high schools in my district and because of the rain, all the roofs are ripped off. When you go to Anlo SHS and other public schools. The damage is so huge that the assembly alone cannot afford it.

“So that’s why we are appealing to the philanthropist if they come to our aid and support us with roofing sheets and anything. We are also appealing to the Ministry of Education. “

Richard Kwami Sefe, Member of Parliament for Anlo, pledged efforts to initiate parliamentary procedures to garner support from the education minister to aid the affected schools.

He expressed his commitment to addressing the issue promptly and ensuring necessary assistance is provided to rebuild the damaged structures and support for the affected schools.

“I’m thinking as soon as we are recalled to parliament, I’ll post an urgent question, especially with the Anlo SHS issue. Because that one is virtually finished so what’s holding the contractor up I think the minister will be in the position to answer that.”

Ayirebi is accused of tying the victim with a rope and subjecting her to sexual abuse. The court has reserved Ayirebi’s plea, and he is set to reappear on March 18, 2024.

The prosecution, led by Detective Inspector Henry Doku, revealed that the complainant, Mawuse Afordofe, a trader and maternal sister to the deceased, had disclosed four months prior that Ayirebi had allegedly raped Margaret Mireku after entrusting her with his laundry.

The deceased, feeling embarrassed due to the age difference, did not report the incident to the police.

On January 11, 2024, witnesses discovered Margaret Mireku in her house with her feet securely tied with a rope. She disclosed that Ayirebi had forcibly had sex with her the previous night. Despite efforts to revive her, she passed away.

The police arrested Ayirebi, and a subsequent examination of the deceased’s body revealed no visible marks of violence but foaming at the mouth.

The body was taken to Kpando Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital, where medical officers confirmed her death. A postmortem examination was conducted on January 12, 2024, and investigations are ongoing.

Volta REGSEC vows to shoot down any intruding drone sighted around restricted areas

The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has expressed concern over the repeated sighting of drones hovering over restricted areas and security installations within the Ho Municipality and other parts of the region.

In August 2023, following directives from REGSEC, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) issued a warning to the public regarding the unauthorized use of drones in and around specific locations, including the Residency, 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks), Ho Central Prisons, and other restricted areas in the region.

A statement by the REGSEC reminded “members of the general public that all restricted areas in the region and security installations are classified as security zones and must be recognised as such”.

The REGSEC revealed it has “authorised the Military, Police, and National Security to henceforth shoot down or capture any intruding drone or flying device sighted or being operated in and around all restricted areas and security installations in the region without requisite permission”.

It entreated members of the general public to “seek clearance” from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and other relevant State Security Institutions “at least five (5) clear working days before undertaking any drone operations in the region”.

  • Volta Region: 6,039 adolescent girls got pregnant in 2022 – Regional Minister

The Volta Region witnessed 6,039 adolescent pregnancies in 2022, as many young girls resorted to child marriage or cohabitation for survival.

This revelation was made by the Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, during the Gender Equality Males’ Empowerment School (GEMS 2023) held in Ho last week.

GEMS 2023, organized by the Department of Gender under the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), focused on the theme “GEMS Action for Gender Equality, Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights: Men and Boys as Key Partners.” The primary goal was to involve men and boys as allies in the fight to end child marriages.

The two-day program saw the participation of 32 assembly members, youth, religious leaders from the Keta municipality, Central Tongu, South Dayi, and North Dayi districts, along with 32 boys selected from schools in those areas.

Dr. Letsa referred to data from the regional secretariat of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) regarding adolescent pregnancies, expressing concerns about its implications for the future development of both girls and boys.

He noted that numerous adolescents engaged in unprotected and indiscriminate sexual activities, posing a severe threat.

Organizations such as the Department of Gender, in collaboration with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and UNFPA, have implemented various initiatives to educate and empower stakeholders, including adolescents, on issues like Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights.

These initiatives aim to garner support from various stakeholders, including parents, traditional authorities, community leaders, duty bearers, teachers, and adolescents, to raise awareness and eliminate or significantly reduce cases of SGBV, teenage pregnancy, and child marriage in the region.

The Regional Director of Gender,Thywill Eyra Kpe, highlighted the misconceptions surrounding gender equality advocacy, emphasizing that it involves both men and women, as well as boys and girls.

She noted that gender equality required active participation from men, dispelling the myth that men were adversaries in this endeavor.

GRA seizes more than 700 fake electricity metres at Dabala

The Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Division has seized more than 700 counterfeit meters at the Dabala Junction Checkpoint in the Volta Region.

This confiscation occurred on August 29, 2023, when customs officers inspected a bus traveling from Aflao to Accra.

During their inspection, the officers discovered the fake meters concealed in the bus’s luggage compartment. None of the passengers claimed ownership of these counterfeit meters, which were subsequently impounded by customs officials.

According to Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, the General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta Region, importing meters into the country without a license is illegal. Only the Electricity Company of Ghana, NEDCO, and the Ministry of Energy are authorized to import meters into the country.

Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo expressed concern about the negative impact of substandard meters installed without ECG’s knowledge, as they pose risks to customers and the company’s operations.

These risks include fire outbreaks, overloading, and damage to transformers, leading to outages and technical losses.

She advised customers to avoid purchasing meters from unauthorized sources and instead visit their nearest ECG office for meter services. Additionally, she encouraged customers to pay their electricity bills promptly to support the electricity supply chain.

Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo called on the public to report individuals using illegal meters and commended the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division and other security agencies for their support in addressing the issue of illegal meters.

She also urged customers to use the ECG PowerApp or dial *226# to pay their outstanding bills, contributing to stable power supply.

A pall of grief and outrage hangs over the Volta Region as the family of a 26-year-old man is demanding answers and justice following his untimely death while in police custody.

The deceased young man, whose identity has been revealed as Felix Azibodzi, was apprehended by police authorities in the area on August 9, 2023, on suspicion of robbery.

However, he never returned home until reports of his demise reached his family. The incident has hit the family like a sledgehammer, and are therefore demanding justice. They insist his demise was unjustified and suspicious, arguing that prior to his arrest, he was hale and hearty.

Speaking in an interview on Starr News on how they got to know of their relative’s arrest, an uncle to the deceased, Michael Azibodzi,  narrated that: “Two days after he [the deceased] left home, about 13 police officers led by the commander came here to look for the father.

“I called out the father (sick) from the room and we sat down with the police who informed us that they invited Felix (deceased) for interrogation and arrested him,” he continued.

“They went on to inform us that a day after his arrest, he complained of ill health and was taken to the hospital for treatment where he passed,” he added.

Upon checks with checks on the body at the Ho Teaching Hospital morgue, the Azibodzi family found out that the deceased was physically molested while in custody

“We were not told Felix had an accident but we were left distraught and disgusted when we went to view the body at the morgue. He had bruises on his back, one of his arms left disjointed and his legs fractured,” the family revealed.

Further checks from the hospital, according to the family, revealed that the deceased was brought to the facility dead.

While the police administration in the area has not yet provided a statement regarding the matter, insider sources from the police force have refuted any allegations of misconduct by the police.

However, it was verified that the individual who passed away had been apprehended in relation to a car theft on the mentioned Wednesday. Subsequently, he was found to be unwell the following day while in detention.

Reports indicate that he was reportedly taken to the hospital for medical treatment on Thursday, August 10, where he later passed away.

Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has asserted that politics stands as one of Ghana’s biggest woes.

He said if elected, he would ensure that these resources are well utilised if given the nod.

  • Togo wants to take over Ghana’s Volta Lake

Togo wants to take over Ghana’s Volta Lake

Dr. Clifford Braimah, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), the Republic of Togo has made attempts to lay claim to the Volta Lake. This issue arose during negotiations over the Sogakofe-Lome Transboundary Water Supply Project between Ghana and Togo.

Dr. Braimah disclosed this information while appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee in Accra. He mentioned that negotiations between the two countries have been slow, with both parties trying to find common ground before proceeding with the project.

One of the contentious points is that the Togolese authorities want Ghana to bear the majority of the risk associated with the project, while they would receive 85% of the water to be produced. Additionally, they wish to take raw water and treat it themselves, while Ghana wants to treat the water at Sogakofe and distribute it to communities along the route.

Furthermore, Togo has attempted to lay claim to the resource itself, arguing that both countries jointly own the Volta, and thus, Ghana cannot impose charges on them. However, Ghana contends that the water for the project originates from Burkina Faso.

The GWCL is engaged in negotiations to secure the best deal for Ghana, both financially and in terms of the project’s implementation. Dr. Braimah emphasized that Ghanaian authorities cannot afford to let Togo take advantage of the situation without getting a fair agreement.

The Sogakofe-Lome Transboundary Water Supply Project aims to transfer treated water from Sogakofe in the Volta Region to the Togolese capital, Lome, with an estimated cost of US$110 million in 2005.

In a separate matter, the Ghanaian government is actively working to increase water production to the Northern and Savannah regional capitals, Tamale and Damango, respectively, and their surrounding areas. The Damango water project has been delayed due to financial constraints, but necessary agreements for the release of the US$49 million project cost have been signed and are currently with Deutsche Bank.

To address the immediate water needs of Damango, the GWCL has developed an artesian well drilled in 2015 to treat water for the local community. The long-term plan is to build a larger treatment plant at Yapei on the White Volta and distribute water to Tamale and Damango.

He expressed confidence that the new technology deployed at the facility, equipped with state-of-the-art Microwave Treatment Equipment (Ecosteryl), will effectively safeguard public health.

The facility has a daily treatment capacity of 5,000Kg (5 tons) of hazardous waste and is expected to create around 200 direct and indirect jobs for residents in the region.

Mr. Said Haidar, the Executive Director of the Jospong Group of Companies (Environment and Sanitation Cluster), praised President Akufo-Addo for creating a conducive environment for the private sector to thrive.

“This medical waste treatment facility being commissioned is environmentally friendly as it uses unique technology which is a Microwave Treatment Equipment that will treat 5,000Kg of hazardous waste. This facility will minimize the health risks of improper medical waste treatment”, he emphasized.

He highlighted the company’s commitment to providing public health services, citing their work in larvae source management, mosquito population control, and COVID-19 disinfection.

The newly commissioned medical waste treatment facility uses environmentally friendly Microwave Treatment Equipment, specifically designed to treat hazardous waste, thereby minimizing health risks associated with improper medical waste treatment.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, explained that the government, as part of its initiatives, plans to establish 16 Integrated Recycling and Composting Plants (IRECOPs) and 14 Medical Waste Treatment facilities across the region.

The facility will cater to the health facilities in the region and its surroundings, generating employment opportunities while contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing.

The Paramount Queen Mother of Akrofu Traditional Area, Mamaga Akua Sebea Nyabor VII, expressed her gratitude to the Jospong Group of Companies and President Akufo-Addo for establishing the facility in her community. “When I was young, some white people came for me, and they wanted to take me away so my father has to sign before they can take me away, but because he doesn’t want to associate with me, he didn’t come, so my grandparents said I should remain as I am.”

He explained that as he grew older, he gradually discovered that his feet had five toes contrary to his mother’s initial claim that like with his fingers he had extra toes.

“With my current make up, I feel bad going into a relationship because maybe they might run away from me when they see how I am. Initially, I didn’t want to do that because I felt I will become somebody after school … but right now that I want to go into relationships, I am feeling shy to go and talk to them.”

According to Half Plot, despite having completed secondary school, his aspirations of furthering his education have been thwarted by financial constraints.

“I come from the Volta Region but for now, I am in Adansi Praso, my mother accepted me but for my father, he didn’t want to come close to me. …I did General Arts in Secondary school, I wanted to further my education but my mother said she doesn’t have money.”

He also recounted facing discrimination and rejection during job searches as employers were hesitant to hire him due to his physical appearance.

“ …I am old and I need to work but employers see how I look and they don’t want to help me. So, I am pleading with those that are watching to assist me in any anyway possible to help me overcome this feeling of being entirely different.

He then stated that he admires popular Ghanaian personalities, Nana Ama Mcbrown and Kojo Nkansah Lilwin, and aspires to follow in their footsteps.

“One thing I want in life Is to meet Nana Ama Mcbrown and Kojo Nkansah Lilwin, I want to be like them.”

  • Ho hit by worst floods in 30 years after heavy rain

Ho hit by worst floods in 30 years after heavy rain

Ho, the regional capital of Volta, was submerged in floods last Saturday, after a downpour that was the heaviest in three decades.

The rain, which lasted for six hours, measured 189.2 millimetres, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The second highest rainfall recorded in Ho during the period was 152.2 millimetres in 2006.

The floods affected several areas, including Ho-Bankoe, Ho-Donokodzi, Ho Barracks-New Town, Ho-Adzimakope, and Ho-Powerhouse. More than 1,000 people were displaced and many properties were damaged.

The EPA and the Ho District Meteorological Office attributed the floods to choked and narrow drains, as well as structures built on waterways.

The EPA Regional Director, Hope Smith Lomotey, warned that the people living in low-lying areas along water courses must relocate to higher grounds as soon as possible, as more rains were expected in the coming days.

He also urged the residents to respect the environment and dispose of their rubbish properly to avoid blocking the gutters.

He said the final destination of flowing water was the sea and once its course was blocked the result was often disastrous.

“We must all respect the environment to avoid a repetition of this kind of horror in future,” he said.

The Ho Central MP, Benjamin Kpodo, blamed the Ho Municipal Assembly for failing to enforce its environmental by-laws and building regulations.

He said the assembly was negligent in allowing people to build on waterways and not clearing the drains regularly.

He called on the assembly to take immediate action to prevent further floods in the area.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is still assessing the damage caused by the floods and providing relief to the affected people.

  • Houses in Volta Region submerge after downpour

Houses in Volta Region submerge after downpour

On Saturday, July 8, Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, experienced a relentless 3-hour downpour, resulting in widespread flooding in several areas of the city.

The excessive rainfall caused major drainage systems to overflow, aggravating the situation.

As a result, numerous stores and residential areas were submerged, forcing residents to evacuate and salvage their belongings from the fast-moving currents.

Although the floodwaters have since receded and the rainfall has lessened, residents remain concerned about the potential for more severe rainstorms and the subsequent threat of flooding. One resident expressed their frustration, questioning why the gutters and bridges overflowed and why certain areas were flooded despite the rain not being the heaviest they had experienced in Ho.

In the midst of this distressing situation, residents were seen screaming in helplessness as they witnessed their properties submerged in the floodwaters. The sight of their belongings being damaged or destroyed added to their anguish.

The occurrence of such floods highlights the need for better infrastructure and preparedness in the face of heavy rainfall. Authorities should focus on improving drainage systems to handle intense downpours, conducting effective urban planning to mitigate flooding risks, and implementing early warning systems to alert residents in advance. Public awareness and education on flood preparedness are also crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

Given the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, it is imperative to address these challenges promptly and comprehensively.

By investing in resilient infrastructure, incorporating climate change adaptation measures, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the city can better protect its residents and minimize the impact of future floods.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring that the lack of safe water in rural areas of Ghana becomes a thing of the past.

“Regarding SDG 6 with demands that we provide clean water and sanitation for all, the Akufo-Addo government has made significant improvement towards this objective.”

“You may recall at a ceremony in the Ho West District on the same day I cut the sod for the commencement of five districts’ water project, I commissioned completed projects under the water supply improvements project of the Ghana Spain Debt Swap Development Programme implemented by the Community of Water Sanitation Agency (CWSA) at a total cost of $3.7 million,” he stated.

  • Roaring sea continues to wreak havoc in Keta

Roaring sea continues to wreak havoc in Keta

Three Coastal communities in the Keta Municipality of Volta Region have been submerged by the roaring sea

The once thriving hub for fishing activities years ago have now been completely washed away.

Consequently, the inhabitants have relocated to other parts of the country and neighboring West Africa countries in search of jobs and livelihoods.

Agorkedzi, Atiteti, Dzita, Kedzikope, Horvi, Blekusu, Adina and Agavedzi appear to be the next in line to submit to the roar of the Atlantic Ocean.

A colonial relic, Prinzenstein, built in 1784 by the Danes in Keta, which served as a prison, is in ruins on the stretch.

It had served as a transit point for slaves from Accra, Northern Volta, Togo and Dahomey in Benin.

The roof is almost gone, the wooden structures are weak, while portions of the walls have fallen.

Few meters away from the forts is the Saint Michael Cathedral, described as a magnificent worship centre built in 1982 by the Catholic Church.

At high tide, sea water hits the fence walls of the church.

A kilometer from the Cathedral is the residence of Joana Adiku, 60, who has lived in the area all her life.

“For those of us here, we sit on tenterhooks, especially from July onwards. Our situation is like being notified of a pending war but all border exits are closed,” she says in a still voice.

Growing up, she says going to the seashore was quite a distance, but now it is just three feet away.

Mr Joel Degue, 58, a development worker, and an indigene of the area, says the beautiful sandbar between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoon Complex is sinking.

Two thirds of Keta have been taken by the sea. It used to be the capital of Volta Region but lost that status in 1986 due to land loss.

“In the 1980’s, Keta used to be one of the most thriving business towns where traders from Togo, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Benin, Niger visited. The sea invasion, which damaged market centres robbed the area of such a mega business status leading to the exile of most talented and exuberant people,” he says.

Mr Deng recalls that although the area had a history of coastal erosion, the rate of intrusion has been rapid in the last four decades.

“I grew up in Keta, specifically Dzelukope and Abutsiakope. I remember crossing a very wide sandy beach before reaching another one, especially around Ghanakpedzi and Lokpodzi beach towards Zomayi beach, Tettekope beach,” he recounts.

“Vividly, I remember seeing a very wide beach around Tegbi-Kpota, Woe Lighthouse, Whuti, Srogbe, Adakordzi, Akplorwotokor as recently as the 1990s. Today, greater portions of those beaches are gone into sea and the communities are precariously exposed.”

He says erosion along the coastland, especially between the Volta Estuary and Aflao is the greatest environmental threat in Ghana besides illegal mining popularly known as “galamsey”.

     Causes
Multiple factors contribute to the vulnerability of Keta, particularly extraction of sand at the beach, geographical location, depletion of vegetative cover and rising sea level caused by climate change, says Dr Andrews Agyekumhene, Lecturer at the Department of Marine And Fisheries Sciences University of Ghana.

In Ghana, the waves normally move from west to east and Keta, which already is below sea level, is hit by high waves making that section vulnerable.

He explains that naturally, the sea tides flow to the shore with a quantity of sand and takes a quantity back when retreating.

“Once the sand deposit is extracted by the people, the tide has no choice than to  take the sand available back, and that causes the shore to erode.”

Dr Agyekumhene says the world is experiencing increase temperature as observed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN scientific body that provides regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation.

This is causing the sea to warm, while the ice cape (glacier) is also melting due to the warming.

The results are an increase in volumes of sea water.

He tells the GNA that Keta may be far from the glacier, but the seas are connected, so happenings elsewhere impact on all.

The quest for a lasting solution

Successive governments have attempted solutions by building defense walls at some sections but the threats still linger.

Mr Emmanuel Gamegah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Keta, expresses optimism that the development of the commercial port will help mitigate the effects of the waves.

“From where I sit, I have been part of the process leading to the completion of the port. When that happens, this tidal wave problem will be solved. I am aware that the project will reclaim one kilometer of the land taken by the sea,” he says.

Aside from that, Keta will be benefiting from the second phase of the West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project 2 (WACA ResIP 2).

The World Bank in 2022 announced the approval of a $150 million in finance for Ghana to improve ecosystem health and protect communities from erosion, which includes the Volta Delta and Keta Lagoon.

This will be done through the protection and restoration of mangrove forests; nourishment of sandy barriers; dune revegetation; and building of protective infrastructure such as groynes.

For Dr Agyekumhene, building of infrastructure like sea defense helps but the best approach is to use nature-based solutions- planting more mangroves, coconuts and other vegetative plants to solve coastal erosion.

“The structures will fall apart with time like in the case of Ada. The defense wall often shifts the problem from one location to the other…”

The mangrove expert explains that best practice has demonstrated that vegetation holds the soil together preventing sea water from easily taking the soil.

With nature-based solutions, Keta’s frontline communities, including Atiteti, Dzita, and others on the coast of Ghana and those around the world threatened by coastal erosion will be protected.

  • Rise in murder cases in Akatsi concerning – Chiefs

Rise in murder cases in Akatsi concerning – Chiefs

Chiefs in Akatsi South municipality in the Volta Region have bemoaned the rise of murder cases in the area.

More than 12 persons in the area have been killed between the last quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of this year.

Statistics suggest that the deaths are due to robbery, vehicular accidents, police brutality and domestic violence. On Tuesday 21 June, a 30-year-old man, Nelson Mandela Zanu, met his untimely death around 8pm.

He was shot twice and killed by unknown gunmen in his neighbourhood while he was on his way home after work.

Zanu, an Okada rider (commercial motorbike operator), owned a mobile money business near Akatsi College of Education.

According to his friends, Zanu left the Okada station to drop off his employee (mobile money operator) at home at about 7:30pm. News of his demise came an hour after the two had left the station. Zanu’s employee alleged that he (Zanu) left the station with seven smart phones and more than GHC18,000 cash in his bag.

The unknown perpetrators took away Zanu’s money, phones and motorbike with registration number VR-436-13 after shooting and killing him. The police have recovered a pistol from the scene believed to have been used to commit the crime.

Friends of the deceased describe him as a calm and visionary young man. He was survived by two children – a seven-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy –, and a 34-year-old widow, Georgina Adifu.

The deceased’s father, Steven Senugbe, said his family has been depressed and short of words since the incident occurred. He has appealed to the police to speed up investigations and serve justice.

Senugbe bemoaned the immoral lifestyle of some youth in Akatsi, saying “…crime is increasing in Akatsi and this one is too painful. I plead for a military camp in this area. Maybe with that, the town will be safe.

“It’s risky going out to town…you see young people with weird hairstyles, smoking marijuana day and night without any fear. If you are not careful, they’ll easily attack you.”

On a visit to the deceased’s house, women from the neighbourhood had gone to commiserate with the widow. She pleaded that her late husband’s assailants be arrested and punished.

The deceased’s two-year-old son busy playing with toys and riding a bicycle, knowing nothing about the whereabout of his father.
    Press conference by traditional rulers

Three days after the murder, the Avenor traditional council held a press conference on the case, condemning the crime with a GHC20,000 ransom on the head of the perpetrators. The traditional council and Avenor Senior Peers Chambers raised the GHC20,000 ransom.

Torgbui Dorglo Anuma VI, the president of the council, said, “The Avenor traditional council expresses its deep condolences to the spouse, children and the entire family of Mandela Zanu.”

The traditional rulers called for calm amidst investigation, saying, “The Avenor traditional council calls for calm in these difficult times of recurrent incidents of loss of civilian lives and the consequent police-civilian tension.”

Torgbui Anuma IV called off a planned protest by the Akatsi South youth parliament in honour of the deceased.

He said, “The planned demonstration by the Akatsi South youth parliament should be called off with immediate effect. It is feared that fall outs from the intended demonstration may have the unintended consequence of diverting focus from ongoing investigation on the murder of Mandela Zanu, which we are aware has commenced.”

Daniel Amuzu Kale, speaker of the youth parliament, in a separate press briefing said “As a respectful and listening youth leadership, we have accepted the call by the Akatsi South police command and the traditional council to call off the demonstration.”

The youth, however, gave a two-week ultimatum to authorities to arrest the perpetrators.

For the bereaved family and many residents of Akatsi, Zanu’s case should be the last in the area.

  • Over 61,771 Ghana Cards remain unclaimed in Volta Region – NIA V/R Directorate says

Over 61,771 Ghana Cards remain unclaimed in Volta Region – NIA V/R Directorate says

Data from the Volta Regional Directorate of the National Identification Authority (NIA) indicates that a staggering 61,771 individuals are yet to collect their Ghana Cards, thereby impeding the effective implementation of various government services and identity verification processes.

Regional Director of the Authority, Mr Samuel Mawuli Dayi, shared this information during a press interaction, stating that the figure pertains to the end of May 2023.

Breaking down the numbers, Mr Dayi noted that Ketu South alone accounts for 10,567 unclaimed cards, followed by Akatsi South and Central Tongu with 7,589 and 7,513 unclaimed cards, respectively.

Additionally, he noted that the Regional Directorate in Ho possesses 845 unclaimed Ghana Cards, while the Akatsi North office holds 908, and Hohoe has 1,266 unclaimed cards.

Mr Dayi highlighted possible reasons for the high number of unclaimed cards, suspecting that some migrants may have undergone registration but have since left the jurisdiction, and others may have passed away.

However, he appealed to members of the public who do not fall under any of the aforementioned categories to collect their processed cards, as the Ghana Card is a permanent identification document.

Meanwhile, the National Identification Authority (NIA) has expanded its premium Ghana Card registration services to five additional regions across the country. Residents in Volta, Bono, Bono East, Northern, and Western North regions can now access enhanced registration facilities to obtain their Ghana Cards.

The premium Ghana Card registration service has proven to be highly convenient for individuals seeking swift acquisition of their national identification cards. In line with its commitment to broaden the coverage and accessibility of this service, the NIA has extended its premium registration facilities to the newly added regions.

A statement issued and signed by the Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Col. Peter Kwame Ghansah (Rtd.), announced the operation of new hubs alongside the existing premium centres at the NIA and CalBank Head Offices in Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, and Western regions.

Mr Dayi further stated that the premium services in Ho have received an average of 50 daily applicants since the exercise began on June 12, 2023.

He further noted that in the Volta Region, the premium registration services in Ho have seen an average of 50 applicants daily since the commencement of the exercise on June 12, 2023. Mr. Dayi expressed satisfaction with the response from residents in Ho, highlighting the steady influx of individuals seeking premium Ghana Card registration services. This positive trend indicates a strong demand for efficient and expedited registration processes.

He further highlighted that registrants who avail themselves of the premium registration services in Ho have the advantage of receiving their Ghana Cards on the same day, provided they arrive at the office early enough. This expedited process ensures that individuals can obtain their identification cards promptly and without any conflicts in the details.

The NIA has implemented measures to ensure that the registration process is efficient and accurate. In cases where there may be doubts or discrepancies in the information provided by applicants, the NIA relies on supporting documents such as affidavits and gazettes to verify and process the cards. This additional step ensures that the information recorded on the Ghana Cards is reliable and reflects the correct details of the individuals.

The premium registration centres will offer the following fee-based registration services: for first-time registration and issuance of a Ghana Card at GH¢280; replacement of lost, missing, or damaged cards attracts GH¢110; while update of personal records that requires printing of a new card costs GH¢110.

  • Floods damage 2 girls’ dormitories and kitchen at KETABUSCO

Floods damage 2 girls’ dormitories and kitchen at KETABUSCO

The headmistress of the Keta Business College (KETABUSCO), Matilda Dzotefe, has appealed to government to do a proper assessment of the school and put in place measures to avoid future incidents of flooding.

The appeal by the headmistress comes on the back of the recent floods that have hit the Ketu South and Keta Municipalities of the Volta Region.

The recent floods have displaced many residents of the area.

The flood situation has affected two of the school’s girls’ dormitories and the kitchen.

As a result of the flood, the dining hall has been turned into a kitchen at the school.

Ms Matilda Dzotefe explained the effects of the floods on KETABUSCO.

She told Class 91.3 FM’s Volta Regional Correspondent Kingsley Attitsogbui that: “This year is an exception – too much. The harm caused, I think, is unimaginable. The affected areas, I think, are the two main girls’ dormitories. As you see, they cannot go to the dormitory without passing through the water and because of that, our teachers have to put their heads together and come up with a make-shift footbridge for them to pass and to the dormitory.”

The headmistress also touched on the current state of the kitchen where meals are cooked for the students.

“Water has collected so much in the kitchen so they cannot cook over there. The dining hall is now the kitchen,” she said.

She further explained that: “We have moved the dining hall tables and benches to the uncompleted dining hall so that is where they are taking their meals now.”

According to the headmistress, the situation is affecting teaching and learning in the school.

“It is wasting a lot of time because of the distance conveying food from the dining hall to where they will have to eat. And they will have to be carrying tables and chairs because the hall – we use it for other programmes. When it’s time for those programmes, they have to pack the tables and benches aside use it. After using it, they have to pack them back,” she noted.

“It is affecting teaching and learning. Our contact hours are not effectively used,” the headmistress bemoaned.

She, therefore, called on government to come to the aid of the school and solve the problem once and for all.

  • Electric Vehicle policy will protect environment, promote sustainability – Transport minister

Electric Vehicle policy will protect environment, promote sustainability – Transport minister

Ghanaians have been encouraged to support the Electric Vehicle (EV) policy by the deputy minister of transportation, Frederick Obeng Adom.

Ghana has begun a campaign on energy transition to achieve universal energy access and chart a path to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13.

The ministry of transport recently launched the EV Policy to help reduce emission of greenhouse gases.

Speaking at a consultative meeting on the EV Policy in Ho on Wednesday 14 June, Adom said the use of fossil fuels continues to damage the environment and human health hence the need to prioritise energy transition, especially the use of electric cars.

According to the driver and vehicle licencing authority, there were about 3.2 million registered vehicles in the country in 2022.

The minister said out of the registered vehicles, “…72 percent are powered by petrol engines, 27 percent by diesel engines and less than one percent by liquefied petroleum gas and other energy sources.”

Adom also stated that, “The high dependency on fossil fuels, combined with other factors such as traffic congestion, has resulted in the transport sector becoming a net emitter of greenhouse gases.

“Emissions from vehicles are not only bad for our planet but they are also bad for our health. Air pollution has been partly blamed for cases of asthma, bronchitis and premature death,” hence the need for Ghana to begin to use electric cars.

The deputy director of renewable energy at the Ministry of Energy, Doris Duodu, said there is enough electricity to power the electric vehicles.

She said Ghana’s current installed electricity capacity is over 5,400 megawatts. The country consumes about 2,700 megawatts only, thus, there is excess power for the realisation of EV Policy.

Duodu also reiterated that the use of EV will contribute significantly to solving the negative impact of climate change. She called on Ghanaians to embrace the policy and blaze the trail for other African countries to follow.

Stakeholders from the public and private sectors in the Volta Region participated in the workshop. The participants discussed the objectives, strategies, values, principles and barriers of the policy with emphasis on how it can be implemented successfully.

Southern Volta to receive stable power as ECG constructs 33KV feeder

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully completed the construction of a 33KV feeder that stretches from Aflao to Keta, aiming to enhance power supply in the southwestern part of the Volta Region.

As part of this project, the power distribution company has undertaken various activities including the installation of new lines, the erection of poles, the upgrade of sections of existing lines, and the installation of transformers.

Ing. Michael Babin, the acting Volta Regional General Manager, emphasized that the primary objective of these efforts is to support the local economy by ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply to communities such as Keta, Kedzi, Adafienu, Adina, Agavedzi, Blekusu, Vodja, and the surrounding areas.

“The aim to provide quality, reliable and safe electricity services to support the socio- economic growth and development of Ghana informed management’s decision to complete this project to provide convenience for our customers”, he said in an interview with myjoyoline.com.

ECG constructs 33KV feeder to enhance power supply in southern Volta

Ing. Buabin explained that the under-listed communities experienced frequent power cuts and low voltage because they depended on supply from the Sogakope Bulk Supply Point. He added that the transmission lines also had a transformer exceeding its maximum capacity.

“These challenges led to occasional low voltage in some areas, hence the need to construct a dedicated line from the Aflao Bulk Supply Point to the Anloga Switching Station.

The benefits of the project include a reduction of system losses, improved reliability and stable power supply, operational efficiency and flexibility since the company can now supply power to the keta enclave from either Sogakope or Aflao Bulk Supply Point”, he said.

Ing. Buabin announced that the company has also undertaken a series of projects to enhance service delivery and ensure customer satisfaction.

“We are constructing a switching station at Peki and Dzrakate, a primary substation at Sokode, and an express line from Kpando to Hohoe to augment power supply in the region”, he said.

Ing. Buabin entreated the public to act as whistle blowers to guard against theft along ECG networks and illegal connection.

He reminded customers of ECG going cashless, and entreated them to use the ECG PowerApp to make prompt payments of their bills to enable the power distribution company undertake projects to enhance service delivery, which will inure to their benefit.

“We urge our customers to pay their bills by downloading the ECG PowerApp from google playstore or AppStore or pay through the shortcode *226# before our Revenue Officers visit their premises since this system enables customers to transact business with ECG anywhere or anytime. Customers can also pay at any bank.

Ambulance service accused of neglecting dying boy while enforcing ‘protocol’

The family of a seriously ailing boy had to go through a very distressing process just to get their son to the hospital, from their hard-to-reach community in the Volta Region.

Narrating how this came to be, a Facebook user with the name Gati Promise, explained that he was on his way to Ho, the capital of the region, when he encountered the situation.

He added that at a point, they chanced on some people frantically standing by the roadside with a ‘critically-ill boy.’

He said that their car was immediately stopped to allow them in and out of curiosity, he asked them what the challenge was.

“I was traveling to Ho this morning and then got to Ziope Clinic there was this woman with a critically ill boy and the Nurses.

“They stopped the car in which I was for the woman and her son to join the car, I quickly asked the nurse why can’t they call the Ambulance Service to come and pick up the boy at the Hospital,” he said.

Gati Promise continued that the nurse with the family then confirmed to him that they had had trouble getting an ambulance to convey the ailing boy.

He added that they then decided that, perhaps, while on the way, they would meet up with the ambulance and transfer the family into it, but what they found out instead was a shocking one.

He stressed that an officer of the Ambulance Service told him that they had to go through protocol to be able to access the ambulance.

“The nurse confirmed to me that they called them and they promised to come but they don’t know what is keeping them.

“So, we decided to pick up the boy and the mother with the sense that we will meet the ambulance on the way and handover to them.

“We drove to Kpetoe and found out that the ambulance was at the station, I went to the station and met Mr. Dogbey, I narrated the whole story to him and asked him to pick up the boy with the ambulance to Ho but to my surprise, Mr. Dogbey told me he can’t pick up the boy. When I called the regional office, they told me I have to go through protocol,” he narrated.

The narrator also explained that after further investigations from the nurses at the Ziope health facility, he came to the understanding that that terrain was common.

He added that the nurses told him that due to this attitude and behaviour of the Ghana National Ambulance Service, lives had been lost.

“I quickly called the nurses at Ziope Clinic to find out if they called the ambulance service or not, and they confirmed to me that this is not the first time this is happening, they lost lives because of delays and refusal of service from the ambulance service, hmmm. I pray that nothing happens to this boy,” he added.

  • Peace Council calls for calm in Nogokpo-Agyinasare brouhaha to maintain religious peaceful coexistence

Peace Council calls for calm in Nogokpo-Agyinasare brouhaha to maintain religious peaceful coexistence

The National Peace Council has begun mediating peace talks between Nogokpo Traditional Authorities and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare of Perez Chapel International.

This follows an impasse between the Nogokpo people and the Perez Chapel leader.

The church and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare have been criticised by a section of the public following one of the sermons of the church in which the founder said Nogokpo was the “demonic headquarters” of the Volta Region.

Indigenes of Nogokpo have called out the Archbishop to apologise over his comments which the Archbishop has done in his Sunday, May 28, 2023, service.

Even though Archbishop Agyinasare has rendered an apology over his comments, saying he did not in any way mean to denigrate the people of Nogokpo and the Volta Region as a whole, the Nogokpo traditional authorities have given the Archbishop a 14-day ultimatum to appear before them.

The Nogokpo traditional authorities issued the ultimatum on Friday, June 2, 2023.

But the Peace Council in a statement on today, Tuesday, June 6, 2023, signed by its Chairman, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, said “The National Peace Council has noted with concern the current impasse between Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder of Perez Chapel International and Nogokpo Traditional Authorities.”

It added, “Recognizing the fact that the impasse if not quickly addressed may have consequences on peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance in the country, the National Peace Council, in pursuit of its mandate to facilitate conflict prevention, appeals to the Nogokpo Traditional Authorities and Perez Chapel International to remain calm and not give in to provocations as efforts are being undertaken to address the situation.”

The Peace Council also called on all those who have been affected in any way by the stalemate to exercise restraint and circumspection in their comments and pronouncements on the matter.

Similarly, the National Peace Council also urged the media and all those who make statements on the matter to exercise maximum restraint in their narratives to protect the peace, stability, and the integrity of our beloved country.

“We want to inform the public that the Volta Regional Peace Council has begun the process to engage the parties for amicable redress,” Peace Council’s Chairman stated, adding “The Council concludes by respectfully reminding Ghanaians of how far we have come as one nation, living together as one people for many years.”

Ho Technical University has not recorded any HIV/AIDS outbreak – GHS

The Volta Regional Health Directorate of Ghana Health Service (GHS) has denounced rumors regarding an outbreak of AIDS/HIV at the Ho Technical University.

The story first reported by a blog claimed that over 400 students have tested positive and have been asked to go home. Various social media actors shared and quoted the unverified report without conducting proper due diligence.

But the Regional Health Directorate has unequivocally declared the publication to be false and unfounded, urging the public to disregard it.

According to the Volta Regional Health Directorate, a comprehensive review of HIV testing data from health facilities in the Ho Municipality and the entire Volta Region revealed no increase in recorded HIV cases within any facility or the region as a whole.

They emphasized that there had been no surge of HIV cases at Ho Technical University or any other tertiary institution in the Volta Region.

    Below is the full statement

FALSE REPORTAGE ON THE HIV INCIDENCE IN THE HO TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY

The attention of the Volta Regional Health Directorate has been drawn to an online publication by an unverified and unknown news portal ‘ajnewonline.com’ with the headline “Hookup Trend Leads to HIV Outbreak at Ho Technical University: Over 400 students suspected positive”.

The publication has subsequently been quoted by various social media actors without any form of due diligence.

The Regional Health Directorate by this release is informing the public to disregard the said
publication since it is false and unfounded.

A review of the HIV testing data in all the health facilities in the Ho Municipality and the rest of the Volta Region does not suggest an increase in recorded HIV cases within any facility or the Region as a whole. For the avoidance of doubt, the region states emphatically that there has not been a surge of HIV cases in the Ho Technical University or any other tertiary institution in the Volta Region.

The Volta Regional Health Directorate and its partners have over the period successfully implemented several strategies to fight HIV/AIDS. These strategies seek to reduce new infections by 85% and eliminate mother-to-child transmission.

The Region however encourages its inhabitants to avoid stigmatization and fully lend themselves to the disease awareness campaigns and tailor-made services that meet their specific needs so as to consolidate the gains made in HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. HIV services are available in all private and public health facilities in the Volta Region.

The public is assured that their right to privacy and confidentiality will always be upheld as is the case in all disease conditions.

In conclusion, let us take note that HIV is still real, and all must endeavor to live positively
through sexual abstinence or by both uninfected partners being faithful to each other, and by the consistent use of condoms.

  • Dr Letsa laments devastating impact of climate change; says angry sea has washed away communities

Dr Letsa laments devastating impact of climate change; says angry sea has washed away communities

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, has lamented the devastating impact of climate change on communities in the region.

He said many communities have been wiped out as a result of climate change.

He explained that in recent years, the effects of the sea have been so drastic that a number of communities have been completely wiped away by its effects.

Speaking on the first day of a two-day National Blue Economy Summit in Accra, the minister stressed that the sea is angry and as such, it is spewing its anger at many of such communities in the region.

“I dare say that the sea is now fighting back. We see an increase in the storm surge, coastal flooding and coastal erosion, with ravaging effects on farmlands, infrastructure, important ecosystems, and the people.

“In the Volta Region, many communities have been, literally, wiped out by the sea, while many more live in constant fear of what the angry sea will spew out next,”

Dr. Archibald Letsa further called for the country to, literally, be at peace with the sea so that it does not continue to exact its ‘anger’ at communities, destroying many properties.

“It will be in our own interest to amend our ways and rather live in harmony with the sea,” he added.

The National Blue Economy Summit enters its second day on Thursday, June 1, 2023.
