Pochettino takes over as head coach for USMNT

Argentinian soccer , Pochettinowho has led some of Europe’s top club teams over the past decade, has been named to lead the U.S. men’s national soccer team through a much-anticipated run at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

“Mauricio is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams,” said Matt Crocker, U.S. Soccer’s sporting director.

After the U.S. team’s 0-1 defeat to Uruguay in a Copa America Group C match in Kansas City, Coach Gregg Berhalter was seen greeting goalkeeper Matt Turner, as the team faces elimination from the tournament.

The U.S. national team is now under increasing scrutiny, with many calling for Berhalter’s dismissal. The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the new coach would be a significant move, given his high-profile background.

Pochettino, known for his stints at top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, is considered one of the most distinguished coaches ever to be considered for the U.S. men’s national team role.

While Pochettino began his coaching journey in Spain, his rise to prominence came in England with Tottenham Hotspur, where he revitalized the club’s fortunes in the latter half of the 2010s.

His subsequent roles at major clubs have only further solidified his impressive coaching credentials. The prospect of hiring Pochettino is seen as a major step up for a U.S. team traditionally managed by coaches from Major League Soccer.

“His passion for the game, his innovative approach to coaching, and his ability to inspire and connect with players make him the perfect fit for this role. We are excited to have him leading our Men’s National Team,” said U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone.

The 16th-ranked U.S. men’s soccer team is set to play a friendly against New Zealand on Tuesday night, but Mauricio Pochettino will not be at the helm for this match. Pochettino’s first games in charge will be in October, when the team faces Mexico and Panama.

Historically, the U.S. men’s team has underperformed on the international stage, often falling short against nations where soccer is the dominant sport.

Despite this, expectations remain high, especially with the U.S. set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Mexico and Canada.

The decision to part ways with Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed after the team’s recent struggles, was driven by the upcoming World Cup.

Berhalter, who took over the team six years ago following a failed qualification for the 2018 World Cup, had led the U.S. to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup, signaling some progress.

However, the team’s poor showing at this summer’s Copa América, where they did not advance past the group stage, led to growing dissatisfaction among fans and former players, resulting in Berhalter’s departure.

Mauricio Pochettino has reached an agreement to take over as the new head coach of the United States men’s national team, with plans to guide the squad through the 2026 World Cup, ESPN reported on Thursday.

The 52-year-old Pochettino, who parted ways with Chelsea earlier this summer after just one season, will succeed Gregg Berhalter in the role.

Pochettino’s appointment follows extensive negotiations with Matt Crocker, the USSF technical director.

Crocker, who has a background with Southampton and the English Football Association, was tasked with finding a top-tier coach to prepare the USMNT for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Despite attempts to recruit Jürgen Klopp, Pochettino’s hiring represents a significant achievement for the USSF.

Pochettino is expected to assume his new role in time for the USMNT’s match against Canada in Kansas City on September 7.

He had also been considered for the England manager position but is set to focus on the U.S. team.

Jurgen Klopp declines offer to coach USMNT after sacking of Emma Hayes – Reports

Jurgen Klopp reportedly declined an offer from U.S. Soccer, which is in the process of finding a new head coach for the U.S. men’s national team.

This follows the dismissal of former head coach Gregg Berhalter. U.S. Soccer, which has a connection to Klopp through USWNT coach Emma Hayes, reached out to Klopp to explore his interest in the role.

According to The Athletic, Klopp rejected the approach, emphasizing his desire to take a break from football after leaving Liverpool earlier this year due to burnout and low energy levels.

Despite his refusal, U.S. Soccer remains interested in the possibility of securing the German coach for the position.

After finishing the Premier League season with Liverpool, Klopp has been enjoying a restful summer, taking time off from the sport.

“It is that I am running out of energy,” he said in January. “I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”

While Klopp is a prominent name on the USMNT’s potential coaching list, he is not the only candidate being considered. The federation’s search for a new head coach is in its early stages. The national team decided to make a change following their poor performance at the Copa America, where they, as the tournament hosts, were eliminated in the group stage.

U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker says the federation hopes to have a coach appointed by September when the U.S. will play a pair of friendlies. They’ll face Canada on September 7 in the first of those friendlies before hosting New Zealand three days later.

  • Pulisic told he’d get more than enough suitors amid Milan sale speculations

Pulisic told he’d get more than enough suitors amid Milan sale speculations

AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic could find himself in high demand if he considers a move away from the club in the upcoming transfer window.

The USMNT star has enjoyed a standout debut season at San Siro since his switch from Chelsea in 2023, notching up a personal-best tally of 13 goals.

However, uncertainty looms over his future amidst speculation surrounding manager Stefano Pioli’s tenure. Rumors suggest that Pioli may face the axe this summer, potentially leaving Pulisic surplus to requirements.

This scenario marks an ironic turn of events for a player who has excelled since his arrival at Milan.

Former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas has no concerns when it comes to Pulisic’s future, telling his State of the Union podcast of why another top club will not be hard to find: “I don’t have to tell Christian Pulisic, he has been around long enough, he knows this stuff.

He’s a grizzled veteran, even at a relatively young age in his career, in that he has seen how quickly things can change. I got a question about ‘Has he done enough?’ Yeah, he’s done more than enough to prove his worth, to prove his value to Milan.

“You could argue that he’s been their best player. But it doesn’t matter because when there is a changing of the guard, there is often a change of mentality and you have people that come in with their preconceived notions and their baggage and the direction they want to go.

Christian Pulisic might be in a situation where he is in a place where thousands of players have been, where they are just not part of the plans going forward. The good part for Christian Pulisic is that I think there will be a lot of suitors out there, there will be plenty of people that will want him going forward. It would be ironic that arguably the best season he’s had results in him having to go elsewhere.”

Pulisic, at just 25 years of age, has already spent time in Germany, England and Italy with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Milan. He has also collected 66 caps for his country and will be hoping to lead them into Copa America action on home soil this summer – before any questions regarding his club future are answered.

  • CONCACAF condemns homophobic chanting towards Matt Turner in statement

CONCACAF condemns homophobic chanting towards Matt Turner in statement

CONCACAF has issued a statement following the Nations League final between the USMNT and Mexico, which was disrupted due to homophobic chanting.

Despite the United States men’s national team securing a 2-0 victory over Mexico in the final of the Nations League, the match was overshadowed by instances of homophobic slurs directed at goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Throughout the game, Mexico fans were heard chanting expletives, particularly during goal kicks.

Despite warnings being issued over the PA system, the referee was forced to pause the game twice-once for five minutes and again before full-time.

While goals from Tyler Adams and Giovanni Reyna secured the win for the USMNT, the homophobic chanting cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory occasion.

This behaviour has unfortunately become increasingly common in recent years, with similar incidents occurring during last year’s Nations League semifinals between the two sides.

CONCACAF’s statement read: “Concacaf condemns the discriminatory chanting in the final minutes of the Nations League Final between Mexico and the United States men’s national teams. Security staff in the stadium identified and ejected a significant number of fans, and the referee and match officials activated the FIFA protocol.

In 2021 Concacaf launched its What’s Wrong Is Wrong campaign, through which it has consistently urged fans to cease the chant with regular digital communications and significant in-stadium messaging before and during all Concacaf events.

It is extremely disappointing that this matter continues to be an issue at some matches, particularly in the context of the next two years presenting such a tremendous opportunity to grow the sport in our region. We will continue to urge fans to support their teams positively and with respect for the opposition and all participants in the game.”

It remains to be seen if fines or further punishment will be meted out to the Mexican FA. In the meantime, the USMNT are next in action in June, against Colombia, while Mexico plays Bolivia in the same month.

  • Arteta hints USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner “will be back with us”

Arteta hints USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner “will be back with us”

Mikel Arteta expressed his strong support for USMNT’s Matt Turner, highlighting that the goalkeeper “is on a great trajectory”.

Turner’s outstanding performance, particularly in saving two penalties against Canada in the Gold Cup, showcased his exceptional skills.

Throughout his career, Turner has demonstrated his penalty-saving prowess, having saved 11 out of 25 spot-kicks he faced, spanning from the USL Championship to the World Cup.

It is evident that he is the top choice for the goalkeeper position in the United States national team.

However, at Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale remains the established starter, holding the undisputed position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

But Mikel Arteta believes that Turner could provide stiff competition to the English keeper as he has been on a “great trajectory”.

“First of all, the same as last year which is a great contribution to the squad and a great contribution to the goalkeeping unit as well because he’s so competitive and keeps everyone at their best level every single day.

Then when he played he’s been great with us and with the national team he’s been superb, so I think he’s on a great trajectory.

“Obviously he needed some holiday because it’s been a long, long year for him, I don’t know how many competitions he’s played in, but it was so many and so he needed a break.

“When it’s after his break he will be back with us,” he told reporters after the 5-0 friendly win over the MLS All-Stars on Wednesday.

Arsenal will be competing for silverware on multiple fronts in the 2023-24 season and Turner will hope to feature at least in the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup on a regular basis if not in the Premier League and the Champions League.

He has previously leap-frogged Zack Steffen to become USMNT’s World Cup goalkeeper in Qatar 2022 and Ramsdale must be on his toes, lest he loses his No. 1 spot.

While Turner enjoys his vacation, Arsenal will be back in action in a pre-season friendly against familiar rivals Manchester United on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford.

USMNT’s Musa edges close to an AC Milan move

United States and Valencia midfielder Yunus Musah is close to a move to AC Milan, according to Nicolo Schira.

Musah, 20, is reported to have agreed personal terms with the Rossoneri, having agreed to sign a four-year deal to make the switch from the Estadio Mestalla to San Siro.

Two clubs from the Premier League are believed to have been interested in him, but Musah has made his preference clear of wanting to join the Serie A side.

If he completes the move, he’ll join compatriot Christian Pulisic, who signed from Chelsea earlier this month for around €22 million ($25.9m).

Los Che have previously been reported to be looking for a fee in the region of €25m to part ways with Musah, who was a standout performer for the United States at the World Cup in Qatar.

Arteta reveals Arsenal’s plans for USMNT striker, Folarin Balogun

Mikel Arteta has shared Arsenal’s intentions regarding Folarin Balogun, emphasizing that the club will make the “best decision” for the talented United States international striker.

Balogun, a highly-rated 22-year-old forward, experienced a significant rise in his reputation last season, impressing with 21 goals during a successful loan spell at Ligue 1 side Reims.

He also made the decision to represent the USMNT, forsaking England, and has already opened his goal-scoring account for the national team.

While Balogun has made it clear that he won’t go out on loan again, it is anticipated that a permanent transfer will be arranged for him this summer.

In the meantime, he remains part of Arsenal’s pre-season plans, featuring in friendly matches.

Arteta stated that the Gunners are currently considering their options before making a final decision on Balogun’s future.

rteta has told reporters when asked about what the immediate future holds for Balogun: “It’s great because he’s done incredibly well.

Now we have to think about what is best to do.

We want to see him, we want to experience him in the next few games, he played the last game against Nuremberg and he will do so again in the next few games, then we’ll make the best decision.”

Balogun remains under contract at Arsenal until 2025, meaning that they can demand a sizeable fee from any transfer.

It has been suggested that a deal for the talented frontman this summer will cost any of his many suitors around £50 million ($64m).

  • Pulisic secures fresh start in Italy, as he completes a £17 million transfer from Chelsea to Milan

Pulisic secures fresh start in Italy, as he completes a £17 million transfer from Chelsea to Milan

Star player of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), Christian Pulisic has completed a transfer worth £17 million ($22 million) from Chelsea to AC Milan.

Pulisic successfully underwent a medical examination at his new club on Wednesday and subsequently signed a four-year contract that will keep him at San Siro until 2027, with an option to extend for another season.

Joining Milan, Pulisic follows in the footsteps of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who was signed from Chelsea for £15 million ($19 million) earlier this month.

Additionally, Pulisic reunites with former Chelsea teammates Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori at his new club.

Pulisic was originally signed by Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million ($75 million) in 2019 and made 146 appearances across various competitions for the London-based club, scoring 26 goals.

However, he struggled for form and fitness with Chelsea, and spent the majority of the 2022-23 campaign on the bench as the Blues slumped to their worst-ever Premier League finish.

Pulisic has now secured a fresh start with Milan, who will be expected to fight for the Serie A title again in 2023-24.

The winger could make his debut for the Rossoneri when they kick off their pre-season tour of the United States with a clash against Real Madrid on July 23.

  • Pulisic priding himself in USMNT’s goal record in history

Pulisic priding himself in USMNT’s goal record in history

Christian Pulisic believes the United States can find comfort from breaking the Grenada away goal record.

It was the first time they had scored seven goals in a match outside the United States when they won 7-1 on Friday in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Ricardo Pepi and Weston McKennie each scored twice in the USA’s first competitive match since the World Cup.

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic also scored and assisted on four other goals.

“We came out really strong with a lot of energy and just kind of put with them right away,” Pulisic said, per ESPN.

“So I think they were kind of surprised by that. Took our goals well and just a great all-around performance. Definitely gives us confidence.”

Pulisic added in his post-game press conference: “We love scoring goals and that’s what we do. So obviously good scoreline, positive result for the team. We definitely enjoyed ourselves out there.”

The game was also the first time USA played a competitive match without using a single MLS player since the league began in 1996.

Interim coach Anthony Hudson was impressed by what he saw from his team, but urged them to finish the job as they bid to reach the Nations League final four.

USA are top of their group ahead of hosting El Salvador on Monday at Exploria Stadium in Florida.

Hudson said: “With a [good] performance and a result like this, you don’t want to get carried away.

“The importance for us is just to make sure that we do all the right things between now and the next game and we finish the job off.

“But the actual performance, I thought it was the result of just a really, really good week.”
