Ghana is intensifying its fight against gold smuggling, a practice that cost the country an estimated $1.2 billion in lost revenue in 2022.
In a bid to tackle this challenge, the government is partnering with the UK-Ghana Gold Programme to strengthen regulatory frameworks and curb illicit trade.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson revealed that about 60 tonnes of gold were illegally exported from Ghana at the height of the country’s economic crisis. “Imagine the impact if that wealth had stayed in our economy,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of addressing illegal mining and smuggling.
During a meeting with officials from the UK-Ghana Gold Programme, Dr. Forson discussed strategies to “ensure Ghana benefits fully from its gold resources while combating smuggling and illegal trade.” One of the key measures being introduced is the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), a regulatory body aimed at overseeing the gold sector and promoting responsible trade.
Dr. Forson explained that through the partnership, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) would be actively working to prevent gold smuggling at key border points, including Bole. Additionally, GoldBod is collaborating with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) to improve pricing mechanisms, introduce pre-financing for gold dealers, and encourage whistleblower reports to expose smuggling operations.
To enhance the sector’s financial stability, the government has committed to funding GoldBod to “purchase three tonnes of gold every week,” a move aimed at bolstering the country’s foreign exchange reserves. In a major policy shift, the finance minister also announced plans to remove the 1.5% withholding tax on unprocessed gold as part of the 2025 Budget, describing it as a step towards “encouraging more legal gold trade and driving economic growth.”
These reforms, according to Dr. Forson, will help Ghana regain control of its gold industry, dismantle illegal networks, and ensure that the country’s natural resources contribute directly to national development. “This is just the beginning—together, we will build a stronger, more prosperous Ghana,” he affirmed.
TheConservative Party has announced plans to push for higher salary thresholds on all work visas, proposing an increase to £38,700. They intend to introduce these changes as amendments to the government’s immigration bill currently under parliamentary review.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp emphasized the party’s commitment to ending what he described as the “era of mass migration.”
Additionally, the Conservatives are calling for stricter marriage visa regulations. Under their proposal, immigrants would only be allowed to bring their partners to the UK if they have been married for at least two years, are both at least 23 years old, and are not first cousins.
Responding, a Home Office spokesperson said: “The Tories had 14 years to reform immigration and asylum, yet they left a system in chaos and our borders weaker.”
Since April 2024, the minimum salary requirement for work visa applicants has been raised to £38,700—a nearly 50% increase from the previous threshold of £26,200. However, exemptions apply to certain professions, including those in health and social care.
The previous Conservative government initially planned to raise the salary threshold for sponsoring family members to £38,700 but later revised it to £29,000.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that the Conservatives had intended to implement the £38,700 threshold for UK-based immigrants seeking to bring a foreign spouse but alleged that Labour had suspended the policy.
Too many people arriving on work visas end up in minimum wage jobs, Philp told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, so a new focus should be on “a much smaller number of very high-skilled migrants, rather than mass low-skilled migration”. “For 20 or 30 years now, we’ve seen huge numbers arriving in the UK, often coming to work on low wages and in low-skilled jobs and it’s time, we think, that ends,” he said.
“We think actually it’s bad for the taxpayer, because recent OBR analysis shows that people coming here on lower wages actually cost the general taxpayer money because they consume more in services than they pay in tax. “It obviously puts pressure on public services, and in some cases, can undermine social cohesion as well.”
During the initial debate on the bill, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told MPs the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill would be effective, unlike the Conservatives’ plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, which Labour ditched as “a failed gimmick”.
The Border Security Bill sets out Labour’s plan to treat people smugglers like terrorists and repeals most of the Conservative’s Illegal Migration Act 2023, which laid the legal groundwork for the Rwanda policy. A Home Office spokesperson pointed out that the Conservatives had the opportunity to introduce all the measures they’re now suggesting during the party’s 14 years in government “including the three they passed whilst Chris Philp was a Home Office minister”.
“The Labour government is getting a grip on the system,” they said. “As part of our Plan for Change, Labour’s Border Security Bill will bring in counter-terror style powers to disrupt the criminal smuggling gangs making millions out of small boat crossings, as well as ensuring police and immigration officers have the powers they need to act where anyone poses a public safety threat. “As with all proposed amendments to government bills, these will be examined as part of the Parliamentary process.”]
EOCO and the UK’s NCA have launched a campaign to fight online romance scams in Ghana.
The goal is to educate people about these scams, where fraudsters trick victims into fake online relationships to steal money.
As part of the effort, EOCO and NCA will share information, work together to track down fraudsters, and encourage the public to report such crimes.
The campaign will use posters, social media, and community programs to spread awareness.
To report a scam, the public can call 0547-419-419 or 0800-910-910.
Collective Action
The NCA’s International Liaison Officer, Dominic Cummins, has raised concerns about the increasing threat of fraud and the need for countries to work together to fight it.
“Fraud accounts for over 40 percent of crimes in the UK, making it a key priority for the UK government to tackle both domestically and internationally,” he stated.
Mr. Cummins explained that scammers use clever tricks to target vulnerable people, often leaving them in serious financial and emotional distress. Since these crimes happen online, fraudsters can operate from anywhere in the world while staying hidden, making it essential for different countries to work together to catch and punish them.
He also stressed that the partnership between the NCA and EOCO has been vital in fighting organised crime that affects both Ghana and the UK.
Implications
The Deputy Director of Legal and Prosecutions at EOCO, Anthony Leo Siamah, has highlighted the serious effects of romance scams, pointing out both the legal consequences and ongoing efforts to stop them.
“Romance fraud not only drains victims of their hard-earned money but also causes emotional and psychological distress,” he said.
He cautioned that these scams are damaging Ghana’s reputation, as fraudsters use online platforms to deceive people, often targeting victims in other countries.
Mr. Siamah explained that with more people using the internet and mobile money, scammers have found new ways to operate, making it harder to catch and punish them.
However, he is confident that EOCO’s partnership with the NCA will strengthen investigations, improve international cooperation, educate the public, and introduce new regulations to crack down on romance scams.
India and the UK will resume discussions on a free trade agreement on Monday after nearly a year-long break due to elections in both countries.
The UK’s Business and Trade Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, is in Delhi to meet India’s Trade Minister, Piyush Goyal, for two days of negotiations.
Reynolds described the trade deal as an obvious opportunity, given India’s expected rise to become the world’s third-largest economy soon.
Since 2022, the two nations have held multiple negotiation rounds, but no final agreement has been reached. Key issues include India’s high tariffs on Scotch whisky and its request for lower fees and easier visa rules for Indian students and professionals moving to the UK.
This is the first round of talks since the Labour Party took charge in the UK, and Reynolds has emphasized that securing the trade deal is a top priority for his government.
“Growth will be the guiding principle in our trade negotiations with India and I’m excited about the opportunities on offer in this vibrant market,” he said in a statement.
India’s trade negotiations have gained fresh momentum, particularly in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent move to impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from various countries, including India.
The United Kingdomremains a key trade partner for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, which has set an ambitious goal of boosting exports to $1 trillion by the 2030 fiscal year.
Following a meeting between UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and PM Modi at the G20 summit in Brazil, Britain announced in November last year that trade discussions would resume in the new year.
Currently, trade between the two nations stands at £41 billion ($52 billion), according to a UK government report. A potential trade deal could open up new economic opportunities, with London highlighting key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and professional and trade services.
Additionally, an agreement could expand market access for British exports, including automobiles, Scotch whisky, and financial services, which hold multi-billion-dollar potential.
Meanwhile, India is advocating for improved mobility rights for its skilled professionals and students, alongside a push for faster visa processing times to facilitate smoother movement between the two nations.
The appeal was made during a courtesy call by the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, on Saturday, December 14, at Mr. Mahama’s office in Accra.
Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude for the United Kingdom’s ongoing support for Ghana’s development and highlighted the urgent need for intervention to stabilise the energy sector.
“If we don’t do something about the energy sector, it could crash everything we are doing. So, as quickly as possible, we want to look at what assistance we can get across the entire energy sector value chain to ensure a more sustainable sector going forward,” he noted.
Ghana’s energy sector is currently in a critical state, plagued by years of mismanagement, inefficiency, and poor financial oversight. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam recently revealed that the sector faces a staggering financing gap of $1.9 billion, which is now estimated to have grown to $2.5 billion (equivalent to over GH¢35 billion). This highlights the scale of the crisis.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also urged the Ghanaian government to overhaul the governance framework of the sector to address persistent challenges, including irregular electricity supply.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Thompson congratulated Mr. Mahama on his electoral victory and reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana.
“Your 120-day plan and our interests coincide, particularly in the areas of health, education, economic growth, and job creation,” she stated.
The two leaders discussed key issues, including trade, investment, and development cooperation. They also explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Mr. Mahama’s 120-day plan aims to reset the country’s economic and social policies, with a focus on tackling pressing issues such as the energy crisis.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment betweenGhana and the UK to work together towards sustainable growth and development.
UK Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has suggested that banning social media for children under the age of 16 is a potential measure under consideration.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Kyle stated his willingness to take necessary steps to protect children and the wider public from online harm.
He also announced plans for further research into the effects of technology, such as smartphones and social media, on young people. According to Kyle, there is currently a lack of conclusive, peer-reviewed evidence on the matter.
In a “letter of strategic intent” addressed to Ofcom, Kyle outlined his priorities as the regulator prepares to enforce new responsibilities under the Online Safety Act (OSA).
The Molly Rose Foundation, a campaign group, commended this initiative as a significant call for Ofcom to adopt a more assertive stance. However, the group emphasised that the Online Safety Act still requires significant strengthening to effectively safeguard users.
“Our research is clear. The public and parents back an updated Act that embeds an overarching duty of care on tech firms, and the Prime Minister must act quickly and decisively to deliver this unfinished job,” it said in a post on X.
Aping Australia The idea of legally restricting social media for young people has come into the spotlight after Australia’s government said it would introduce legislation to ban children under 16 from social media.
Asked whether the UK would follow suit, Kyle said “everything is on the table with me”, but said he wanted to see more evidence first.
He said he was also focused on making sure the powers contained in the OSA, which is coming into effect next year, were used “assertively” by the regulator.
“I just want to make sure that Ofcom knows that government expects them to be used,” he told the BBC.
The OSA demands tech firms take more responsibility for the content on their platforms to protect children from some legal but harmful material.
Kyle said he wanted to see evidence that tech firms were delivering suitable age verification for users, and that the sector was moving towards having “safety baked in from the outset.”
Social media and messaging platforms could face hefty fines, potentially running into billions, if they fail to meet the requirements set by the Online Safety Act (OSA).
In response, several companies have already implemented notable changes. For instance, Instagram introduced new account settings for teens in September, while Roblox restricted young children from messaging other users in November.
Despite these actions, critics argue that the government’s efforts remain insufficient.
In February, the mother of Brianna Ghey, a teenager who was tragically murdered, expressed to the BBC that the measures in place were not enough to prevent such tragedies.
University tuition fees in the UK are set to increase for the first time in eight years, The Telegraph reports.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is expected to announce the rise on Monday, aligning tuition fees with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation.
The change is likely to take effect from September 2025, impacting current A-level students applying to universities.
Fees have remained capped at £9,250 since 2017. While it’s not yet clear which month’s inflation rate Labour will apply, an increase based on the current RPI of 2.7% would push fees to approximately £9,500 next year.
Previous reports speculated that the government might lift fees to as high as £10,500 over the next five years, but no commitments have been made for increases beyond the 2025 academic year, as ministers consider a broader reform of the tuition fee structure.
The increase comes as nearly 40% of universities in England report anticipated deficits this year, facing financial strain exacerbated by a recent drop in international student numbers. Dependence on higher fees from foreign students, who typically pay significantly more than UK students, has kept many institutions afloat; however, recent visa restrictions have led to a 16% decline in applications, threatening the stability of university budgets.
While the higher fees aim to alleviate some financial strain, calls for a more comprehensive overhaul of the funding system continue. The government is also expected to explore adjustments to the tuition fee repayment model to address concerns that escalating student debt disproportionately affects graduates from less advantaged backgrounds.
Phillipson’s announcement will likely present the fee rise as an interim measure and a “first step” toward a deeper re-evaluation of higher education funding. Although Sir Keir Starmer previously pledged to abolish tuition fees, Labour has since moved away from this commitment, citing the challenging financial landscape. Labour’s latest position emphasizes finding fairer ways to fund fees and alleviating pressures on students and universities alike.

Ghanaians applying for UK visas will now use a new Visa Application Centre (VAC) operated by VFS Global, effective October 22.
This change marks the end of services previously provided by TLScontact, which VFS Global will replace.
All applicants, including those who initiated their applications with TLScontact, will now need to complete their processes through VFS Global. According to a statement on the UK government’s website, affected applicants will receive email notifications about the transition.
The new VAC location in Ghana is on the Mezzanine Floor of the Grand Oyeeman Building, South Liberation Link, Accra.
The UK government assured that the change will not impact visa decisions, processing times, or fees. The shift is aimed at enhancing service delivery, including shorter biometric and application submission times at the new VAC.
The UK’s VAC network is managed by third-party suppliers on behalf of UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Marc Owen, UKVI Director for Visa, Status, and Information Services, described the opening of the new centre in Ghana as an important milestone, offering improved digital services and convenience to applicants.
Miracle Films CEO Samuel Nyamekye has dismissed reports alleging that actressEmelia Brobbeystole in the UK eleven years ago.
In response to the resurfaced news about Emelia’s arrest in 2013, he stated that she did not steal the bracelet found in a baby trolley that day, calling the claims untrue.
Recently, concerns have emerged regarding Emelia’s past ordeal in the UK, with some individuals claiming she mistreated a friend who was innocently roped in the incident.
The theft case reportedly led to the wrongful arrest and deportation of Emelia’s innocent friend, Akua Agyeiwaa, who was jailed and sent back to Ghana.
Recently, family members and friends of Akua, still pained by the situation, took to social media to express their feelings of betrayal, alleging that Emelia abandoned her during her arrest.
But amidst the backlash, Samuel Nyamekye has come to Emelia’s defence, stating, “All the rumours circulating about Emelia Brobbey aren’t true.
This issue was brought to my attention long before it went viral.”
Akua’s family, while expressing their sentiments recently, recalled that during Emelia’s arrest in the UK, she provided the police with the address of her friend Akua, who she lived with at the time.
They said during a search of the residence, the police discovered that Akua did not have the proper documentation to remain in the UK, leading to her arrest and deportation.
But Samuel Nyamekye, who remains steadfast in defending Emelia Brobbey’s innocence against all the claims being made, stated,
“Emelia wasn’t even living with Akua when she went to London. She lived with Gloria. But because they were all friends, Akua usually passed by their end once in a while after work.
“It’s because Emelia was friends with Akua, and that’s why the incident rubbed off her,” he stated.
Regarding claims thatEmelia’s “baby daddy” provided her with funds to compensate Akua, the Miracle Films CEO stated, “That’s not true. Her husband gave her the money, not her baby daddy.”

Pius Hadzide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, has made a notable campaign promise to his constituents, pledging to facilitate opportunities for those seeking to travel abroad if elected.
During a recent campaign event, Mr. Hadzide promised to assist voters in traveling to the United States for the 2026 World Cup.
He emphasized that his connections and experience in the sports sector would enable him to help Ghanaian youth participate in major international sporting events.
“Nananom, did you know that it takes 18 hours to travel from Ghana to Australia? Yet, I was able to assist some individuals in making this journey. The 2026 World Cup will be held in America, which is just a 7-hour flight from Ghana.”
“If you, Nananom, desire for your children to travel to America to work and send money back home, or if you are a young person eager to explore opportunities abroad, I promise to support you when I become MP.
“Unlike my opponent, who has had the chance but failed to assist the youth, I will facilitate travel opportunities for all interested young people to destinations like Germany, America, UK, France, and Canada.
“So, I kindly ask for your support in the upcoming election, and I will ensure that I help you achieve your dreams of travelling abroad.”
Despite the backlash his promises have stirred, Pius Hadije has defended his statement asserting that there is nothing wrong with the remark.
In an interview with Accra-based GH One TV, the MP explained that his intention is to help improve the lives of his constituents.
He clarified that the offer to travel to the U.S. is part of his efforts to provide better opportunities and experiences for them.
Additionally, he mentioned that the upcoming FIFA World Cup presents a chance for his constituents to enjoy and have fun.
He has made another daring promise to electorates ahead of the 2024 general elections despite the backlash his earlier utterances have garnered.
In a recent interaction with Senior High School students, Pius Hadzide offered to provide them exeats anytime they require one to visit him.
He highlighted his relationship with the headmaster of the school, suggesting that their friendship will provide him the opportunity to grant their exeat requests.
“Your house as much as this is mine. When you have the time or have an exeat or you have the opportunity to go out and you want to come and say hello, you can.
“Your headmaster is my friend. I have a lot of good friends in your school so exeat should not be an issue. So if you want it, let…….know,” he said.
Man of the moment, Mr. Pius Hadzide speaking to a group of students of Akwamuman Senior High School, urged the students to feel free to visit his home as he’ll be in talks with their school authorities to allow them free exeats https://t.co/5tKprz3Jf7
A group of Ghanaian students studying at the University of Birmingham, UK, are facing deportation after theirstudent visaswere revoked.
According to a statement from the UK Visas and Immigration, this visa cancellation is due to the students’ failure to pay their tuition fees.
The majority of these students are on the Government of Ghana Scholarship Scheme, but due to the government’s delay in sending the necessary funds, they have been unable to meet their financial obligations.
A letter from the UK Visa and Immigration Office sent to the affected students outlined their limited options: either leave the country voluntarily or face legal consequences, including possible detention and prosecution. The students now face the threat of deportation if no resolution is found soon.

Recent updates from the Ghanaian community in the UKhave corrected an earlier report concerning a tragic stabbing incident involving the Obinim family.
Contrary to previous information, Elder Joshua Obinim, the husband of the deceased Ghanaian woman Alberta Obinim, is alive.
Earlier reports had suggested that Elder Joshua, 64, had died along with his wife, Alberta, 43, after being stabbed by their 22-year-old son.
However the initial information, provided by the Ghanaian community in the UK, was inaccurate.
The stabbing incident occurred late on Sunday night, August 18, 2024, at the family’s home on Barnard Road, Gorton.
During the attack, which began around 11:20 p.m., the son, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly assaulted his family with a knife.
While Alberta Obinim tragically lost her life, Elder Joshua Obinim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Their 17-year-old daughter, who was also severely injured, remains in critical condition at the hospital.
The son was apprehended at the scene and is now in police custody, facing charges related to the incident.
This update was confirmed by community leaders, including Obudo and Alex Appiah Mensah, who serve as Ghana Union Chairman in the US and New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Vice Chairman, respectively.
They shared the corrected information via a social media video.
A tragic incident occurred on the night of August 18, 2024, in Gorton, where a 43-year-old Ghanaian woman, Alberta Obinim, her 64-year-old husband, Elder Joshua, and her daughter were fatally attacked by their 22-year-old son.
The violent episode, which unfolded around 11:20 p.m. at their residence on Barnard Road, also left their 17-year-old daughter critically injured.
According to reports, the son, whose identity has not been disclosed, launched a knife attack on his family.
Both parents were severely wounded and rushed to the hospital.
Despite medical efforts, Elder Joshua died shortly after Alberta, who had been pronounced dead earlier.
Elder Joshua reportedly succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained from being stabbed by his 22-year-old son in Manchester.
The son was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody, facing charges of murder.
The Ghanaian community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, and the news has been shared widely, including by Obudo and Alex Appiah Mensah, prominent figures in the Ghana Union in the US and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK, respectively, through social media platforms.
“We took Elder Joshua to the hospital hoping that he would recover, but this morning, Elder Joshua has also died.
The child who stabbed his parents both of them have died, and now it is only his sister who is fighting for her life in the hospital. We are deeply saddened,” one of them said.
District of Columbia Court in theUnited States has ordered the Ghanaian government to pay $111,493,828.92, along with mandatory post-judgment interest, after granting a Motion for Default Judgment in favor of PGC.
This ruling follows Ghana’s disregard for a previous tribunal decision from the United Kingdom. The dispute originated after Ghana terminated a power purchase agreement with GPGC on February 18, 2018.
A UK tribunal, in its Final Award on January 26, 2021, ruled that Ghana had breached its contractual obligations.
Ghana had argued that the contract was terminated because the foreign power company failed to meet specific contractual requirements.
However, the tribunal disagreed, awarding GPGC $134,348,661 in damages, calculated using the Early Termination Payment formula from the purchase agreement.
The damages included compensation for GPGC’s arbitration fees and expenses totaling $3,309,877.74, with interest at three-month USD LIBOR, compounded quarterly, and an interest rate of six-month USD LIBOR + 6%.
After unsuccessful efforts to collect the outstanding payment from Ghana, GPGC filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court on January 19, 2024, seeking recovery of the growing debt under Chapter 2 of the Federal Arbitration Act and the New York Convention.
Court documents reveal that Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, received the petition from the US court on January 23, 2024, with the documents being officially delivered to Ghana on January 29, 2024.
However, Ghana failed to appear in court or respond by the deadline of March 29, 2024.
The court, citing the New York Convention—which the United States has adopted and which recognizes arbitral awards made in the United Kingdom—affirmed its jurisdiction over the case.
The court also noted that Ghana had consented to international arbitration in the power purchase agreement and had explicitly waived its sovereign immunity, as reported by adomonline.com.
In his memo ruling dated August 6, 2024, Chief Judge James E. Boasbergemphasized that the arbitral award between the non-U.S. parties stemmed from a commercial transaction, which falls under the New York Convention.
The Convention requires member states to recognize and enforce such awards, regardless of the parties’ nationality or residence.
Although the judge did not grant GPGC pre-judgment interest, Ghana still faces significant financial strain due to the court’s award of post-judgment interest at the rate specified in US regulations.
The attack took place around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday on Barnard Road, Gorton. Greater Manchester Police have detained a 22-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
In addition, a 17-year-old girl and a 64-year-old man were critically injured with severe stab wounds at the same location, as reported by Sky News.
Authorities have indicated that preliminary evidence suggests the suspect was known to Ms. Obinim and the other victims.
Police are interviewing witnesses to gather more information about the incident.
While the case is being treated as isolated, initial evidence suggests that the suspect was familiar with the victims.
Community leader Ibrahim Abu described Ms. Obinim as a “lovely woman” who “always made sure people were smiling.”.
He said the news of her death had come as a “big blow” to the community.
“Yesterday she was at church, dancing and praising. She was at church… and we wake up and hear she has died,” Mr. Abu said.
He said the community is “pleading to God” to help heal the two other injured victims.
“We hope they will come back to us in good health,” Abu said.
Detective Superintendent Toby Facey said: “We understand that the local community and further afield across Greater Manchester will be rightly shocked and concerned after waking up and hearing this tragic news this morning.
“Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them.”
Officers arrived on the site and made an arrest, according to DS Facey, minutes after the report was placed.
“An investigation has been launched, and we are in the very early stages of our inquiries. We have had detectives on the ground who have been working throughout the night trying to get to the bottom of what has happened and why,” he added.
“Local officers will remain in the area making inquiries, as well as an increased number of highly visible patrols.”
If anyone has any issues, he urged them to contact the local police.
A Kumasi-based trader has sparked a conversation with his bold assertion that Ghana is far better than the United Kingdom.
In a recent interview, the trader claimed that many Ghanaians who initially sought better opportunities in the UK have regretted their decisions and are now returning to Ghana.
“Ghana is far better than the UK. As I speak to you, all those who run to the UK have regretted it. The teachers and nurses have all returned,” the trader stated. He went on to emphasize the peace of mind that Ghana offers, saying, “In Ghana, you have your peace of mind. These nurses have money to buy my things. Unless you say you won’t use your hands to work.”
Expressing his admiration for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the trader hinted at his potential involvement in political campaigning. “I am not a politician, but I might close my shops to campaign for Bawumia. That Mamprusi fellow is very intelligent. I believe he will help Ghana,” he added.
According to a trader in Kumasi during an interview with Global Trendz, nurses and teachers who ran to the UK for better job opportunities now regret their decision and wish to return because Ghana is now far better than the UK. pic.twitter.com/VpszzwuWb7
These remarks were echoed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a separate interview, Wontumi stirred further debate by asserting that Ghana is more enjoyable than London.
“I always say Ghana is better than London. If I say so, am I a joker, or is this a joking platform that I would say such things?” Wontumi remarked. He elaborated on his point by revealing that he has relocated his children to Ghana, citing the country’s pleasant environment and more affordable living costs. “Ghana is better than London. My children are in Ghana here because Ghana is more enjoyable than London,” he concluded.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Papa Owusu Ankomah, has noted that the Ghanaian community in the UK remains largely unscathed by the recent protests that erupted late last month.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Ankomah reassured that the Ghanaian community has not experienced significant harm amidst the disturbances.
“Except for one incident where a Ghanaian reported being threatened while taking a bus, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents affecting Ghanaians in the UK,” the High Commissioner confirmed.
Efforts are being made to ensure the continued safety of the Ghanaian community, Mr. Ankomah stated. “Even as of this morning, our officers are calling around the country, speaking with the leadership of the Ghanaian communities, asking for updates and urging them to encourage Ghanaians in the UK to try and be indoors by 7 pm.”
The protests, fueled by an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign, broke out following a tragic stabbing attack in Southport, northern England, which resulted in the deaths of three children.
On Tuesday, the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service announced that approximately 100 individuals have been charged in connection with the violent unrest that ensued. The protests, which began as anti-immigration marches, quickly devolved into disorder and violence.
He also noted that Ghanaians have been advised to stay indoors at night and avoid areas where protests are anticipated.
With the community’s safety being a priority, the High Commission continues to monitor the situation closely and remains in constant communication with local Ghanaian leaders to provide support and updates.
Ghanaians living in the United Kingdom say they are stranded and unable to leave their homes amid anti-immigration demonstrations across the country.
The UK has seen protests for a week, which have become increasingly volatile, with some demonstrators resorting to violent actions. Protesters set ablaze two Holiday Inn hotels in the town of Rotherham, northern England, and in Tamworth, in the Midlands, central England, which were believed to be housing asylum seekers awaiting a decision on their claims.
Engaging the media, UK-based Ghanaian journalist Kofi Marfo, who works with Rainbow Radio UK, revealed how Ghanaian immigrants in the UK have been cowed by fear of being attacked without provocation.
“They said they’re law-abiding migrants in this country. They do pay or honour their tax obligations. They don’t see any reason why one out of the millions as a result of someone committing a heinous criminal activity must affect each and everyone.”
He indicated that they are hopeful the recent tension will be quelled to prevent further escalation.
“[They hope] this will not get out of hand, this will not escalate to a different level,” he told JoyNews on The Pulse.
Protests first broke out late last month, after an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign stoked outrage over a stabbing attack that left three children dead in Southport, northern England.
The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service said on Tuesday that prosecutors have already charged around 100 people over the violent unrest.
The gatherings ostensibly started as anti-immigration marches but quickly turned disorderly and violent.
Lloyds Bank estimates that thousands of young people in the UK were duped into paying for fakePremier League football tickets last season.
The bank reported a significant increase in ticketing fraud, with cases up by approximately a third compared to the previous year, and advised fans to remain vigilant.
UK Finance, a banking industry group, noted that tickets for football matches sell out quickly, creating opportunities for scammers to exploit eager fans seeking deals.
The group also called on social media platforms to take stronger measures against fraud and urged consumers to stay cautious.
Lloyds Bank estimated that around 6,000 UK football fans fell victim to ticket scams last season, based on an analysis of its fraud data and the bank’s market share, which is about 20% of UK current accounts. This suggests that at least 1,200 of Lloyds’ own customers were scammed.
Most victims were aged between 18 and 34, with the average loss per customer being £177, though some individuals lost over £1,000. Scammers primarily targeted fans of major teams, with Arsenal and Liverpool supporters being the most frequently victimized.
The majority of scams, about 56%, originated on Facebook Marketplace, while 26% started on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Earlier this year, Lloyds Bank also reported that Taylor Swift fans lost over £1 million to ticket scammers ahead of her UK tour.
How did the scams work?
Criminals create fake posts on social media or online marketplaces to advertise tickets that do not exist, often with pictures of real tickets to convince the buyer they’re genuine.
The victim is then tricked into making a payment, usually by bank transfer.
Once the money has been transferred, the fraudster just disappears, and the victim gets nothing in return.
The problem with bank transfers is they are not designed for online transactions, so it is more difficult to get your money back once it has gone.
The banks can pay victims back, but the transactions don’t have the same protections as buying something with a bank card, for example.
What can fans do?
Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds Bank, said “missing out on the big match after falling victim to a ticket scam can be devastating”.
She urged fans to purchase tickets only through official channels and to be wary of offers that seem unusually cheap.
UK Finance cautioned fans to pause and consider carefully before spending any money. They emphasized that it’s perfectly acceptable to reject suspicious requests, as scammers often try to pressure or intimidate you into making quick decisions.
Using a credit card for purchases between £100 and £30,000 provides extra protection.
The Premier League also recommends that fans buy tickets directly from the clubs or their authorized partners.
“Tech and social media companies need to step up and tackle the criminality which is taking place on their platforms and contribute to cost of reimbursing victims,” the spokesperson said.
Facebook owner Meta and X were contacted for comment.

Veteran Ghanaian actress Julie Juu has openly discussed her move to the UK, calling it one of the most rewarding choices she has ever made. Known for her role in the popular TV series ‘Cantata,’ Julie Juu has been residing and working in the UK for over a decade.
At a recent Party in the Park event in the UK, she recounted her journey, revealing that her initial visit was intended to see her children, whom she had missed during significant life events like their graduations due to personal circumstances.
Julie Juu explained that the warm reception and unwavering support from her children during her visit provided her with a sense of comfort, especially as she was mourning her husband’s unexpected death. Her decision to relocate was influenced by her desire to be close to her family during this challenging time.
She noted that her children and other loved ones have been exceptionally attentive, covering all her needs from food and housing to insurance. Reflecting on her life in the UK, she shared that the support she receives has been pivotal in her well-being.
“I found immense comfort in my children’s company after my husband, Nana Bosomprah, passed away. Coping with such a loss is incredibly hard,” Julie Juu said. “Being with them brought me so much joy that I decided to make the UK my home.”
She expressed no regrets about her decision, stating that if she had stayed in Ghana, she might have struggled more with aging and health. “Even if I stopped working now, my children would ensure I’m well taken care of,” she added during her interview with Zionfelix, which has been shared on Instagram.
Julie Juu also highlighted the stark contrasts between her life in Ghana and her current life in the UK, emphasizing the comfort and ease she now enjoys. She made a trip back to Ghana last year to mark a decade of her life abroad.
Inside Out 2 has surged to become the highest-grossing animated film ever, amassing $1.46 billion globally just six weeks post-release. This sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out has surpassed the previous record held by Frozen II, which earned $1.45 billion in 2019. The film‘s earnings are expected to climb further, with its release in Japan still pending.
Currently, Inside Out 2 has outpaced Barbie—last year’s top-earning film, which brought in $1.45 billion. However, it still trails behind Disney’s 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King, which grossed $1.65 billion, although it is categorized as a live-action film despite its computer-generated nature.
With this achievement, Inside Out 2 stands as the 13th highest-grossing film of all time. It has a long way to go to surpass the leaders in the global box office race: Avatar at $2.9 billion and Avengers: Endgame at $2.7 billion.
Of the film’s total revenue, $601 million was generated in the US, while international markets contributed $861 million, including $61 million from the UK. Produced with a budget of around $200 million, Inside Out 2 represents a significant rebound for Pixar, which faced challenges during the pandemic with many films debuting on streaming platforms due to closed cinemas.
The sequel continues the story of emotions inside the mind of Riley, now a teenager, and introduces new characters such as Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment, alongside the returning Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear.
Here’s a snapshot of the top 10 highest-grossing animated films:
Inside Out 2 (2024) – $1.46 billion Frozen II (2019) – $1.45 billion The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) – $1.36 billion Frozen (2013) – $1.27 billion Incredibles 2 (2018) – $1.24 billion Minions (2015) – $1.16 billion Toy Story 4 (2019) – $1.072 billion Toy Story 3 (2010) – $1.068 billion Despicable Me 3 (2017) – $1.032 billion Finding Dory (2016) – $1.025 billion These figures are not adjusted for inflation, which means older films might appear lower on the list when inflation is considered.

The UK’s Home Office recently granted Nelson Shardey, a retired Ghanaian shopkeeper who has lived in the United Kingdom UK for nearly 50 years, indefinite leave to remain.
Shardey, 74, moved to the UK in 1977 as a student and settled in Wallasey, Wirral.
His application for a UK passport in 2019, following his mother’s death, initially faced rejection on grounds of residency status.
Despite being directed to a costly 10-year settlement route, his case was eventually recognized as exceptional by the government.
Shardey’s life in the UK included various jobs and community contributions, such as running his own newsagent business and receiving a police bravery award in 2007.
Married twice to British citizens, he has two sons.
His legal battle, supported by extensive community fundraising, successfully argued for his right to remain based on his long-term residence and contributions to society.
Following the Home Office’s decision to grant indefinite leave and waive fees, Shardey expressed immense relief and gratitude for the support received.
His family plans to donate raised funds to charitable causes.
Advocates hope his case prompts reforms to simplify immigration procedures and reduce financial burdens on applicants in similar situations.
Mr Shardey’s lawyer, Nicola Burgess of Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit, said she was thrilled at the decision.
“Nelson’s bravery in the face of dysfunctional immigration system has been inspirational,” said Ms Burgess.
She urged the new government to simplify the system to avoid “many more” like Mr Shardey, being forced into “an endless cycle of applications, bureaucracy and expensive fees”.
Mr Shardey’s sons, Aaron and Jacob, said his victory “means the absolute world to us”.
“We are so grateful to our legal team… and everyone who supported us… from sharing our story to donating, we cannot thank you enough,” they added.
Joe Biden’s recent press conference, where he reaffirmed his intention to continue his presidential campaign, has failed to quell dissent within his own party. Three Democratic leaders have now joined others in urging Biden to withdraw from the race.
Calls for the 81-year-old to step aside have intensified since his uneven performance in a televised debate against Republican Donald Trump last month.
During a lengthy briefing on Thursday night, Biden appeared more composed and articulate, but there were notable slip-ups. In one instance, he mistakenly referred to his vice president, Kamala Harris, as “Vice President Trump,” and earlier in the day at a NATO event, he initially referred to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin” before correcting himself.
Despite his efforts, doubts persist about Biden’s candidature, compounded by potential defections in the coming days. Several donors, including actor George Clooney, have withdrawn their financial support, questioning his competence for another term.
A Democratic fundraiser, speaking to the BBC, acknowledged Biden’s adequate performance at the conference but noted it wasn’t enough to sway sceptics within the party.
Looking ahead, Biden faces relentless scrutiny at every public appearance. Any misstep is seized upon as evidence of his alleged inadequacy to run for re-election. Shortly after the press conference, Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes praised Biden’s public service record but urged him to step aside from the campaign.
The strongest candidate to confront the “threat” posed by Trump, he wrote, was no longer Joe Biden. Illinois congressman Eric Sorensen also posted on social media that Mr Biden ran in 2020 “with the purpose of putting country over party. Today I am asking him to do that again”.
California congressman Scott Peters was the third to speak out, saying the “stakes are high, and we are losing course”. They bring the tally of Democratic politicians calling on Mr Biden to go to 19.
During the briefing, Biden insisted to reporters that he’s in the race to “complete the job”.
“If I slow down and can’t get the job done, that’s a sign I shouldn’t be doing it,” he said. “But there’s no indication of that yet.” Many of his supporters in Congress came out immediately after the news conference to echo his belief that he is the best candidate. “We’ve got to stop the nitpicking and then focus on the work ahead. This guy has done it, he’s done it in the past,” said Democratic National Committee chairman Jaime Harrison.
US allies have voiced their support for President Biden.UK Prime Minister Keir Starmerpraised Biden’s demeanour during their recent summit meeting, describing him as “very impressive.” French President Emmanuel Macron characterised Biden’s errors as minor slips of the tongue, emphasizing Biden’s command of issues.
Meanwhile, former President Trump took a jab at Biden over his Kamala Harris gaffe, sarcastically commenting, “Great job, Joe!” on Truth Social.
Three years ago, Sir Keir Starmer nearly stepped down as Labour leader. It was 2021, and his party had just suffered a defeat in the Hartlepool by-election to Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, losing the seat for the first time.
Fast forward to today, and those three years seem like a political eternity. Sir Keir has now become only the fifth person in British history to lead Labour from opposition to power.
His party has transformed from a significant defeat in the 2019 general election to a victorious 2024. The Hartlepool loss serves as a stark reminder that Sir Keir’s path to Downing Street was anything but smooth.
His life and career had been on a very different trajectory for a long time.
Baby Keir was born to Labour-supporting parents
Keir Starmer, raised in the town of Oxted on the border of Kent and Surrey, was one of four siblings. His upbringing was shaped by his father, a toolmaker, and his mother, a nurse who battled with Still’s disease, a severe form of arthritis.
Sir Keir has openly discussed the difficulties of his childhood, particularly during the high inflation era of the 1970s.
“If you’re working class, you’re scared of debt,” he said during the election campaign.
“My mum and dad were scared of debt, so they would choose the bill that they wouldn’t pay.” The choice was the phone bill.
A young Keir, on the right, excelled at music, playing the flute, piano, violin and recorder
In his youth, Sir Keir Starmer led a multifaceted life. He had a passion for football, often found on the left side of midfield, and showed musical talent, studying violin under Norman Cook, later known as DJ Fatboy Slim.
Known for his rebellious spirit, Sir Keir and his friends once found themselves in trouble with the police for illegally selling ice cream on a French beach to raise funds.
Politics also played a role from early on, evidenced by his name honoring Keir Hardie, the first leader of the Labour Party. Before entering Parliament, Sir Keir engaged in left-wing political activities, hinting at his future path in public service.
Sir Keir, pictured lying down, poses with flatmates during his student years in Leeds
That started at school, when he joined the Young Socialists, Labour’s youth movement.
After school, Sir Keir became the first person in his family to go to university, studying law at Leeds University and later at Oxford.
At Leeds, he was influenced by the indie music of the 1980s, from The Smiths and The Wedding Present to Orange Juice and Aztec Camera.
His biographer, Tom Baldwin, notes his favourite drink as a student was a mix of beer and cider – or Snakebite – and he had a taste for curry and chips.
During his tenure under the 2010-15 coalition government, Sir Keir Starmer faced the challenge of implementing substantial cuts, including reducing the Crown Prosecution Service’s budget by more than 25%.
His responsibilities also included overseeing high-profile cases such as prosecuting MPs involved in the parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009 and prosecuting Chris Huhne, then a Liberal Democrat cabinet minister, for perverting the course of justice by asking his wife to take speeding points for him.
In recognition of his legal achievements, Sir Keir was knighted in 2014. Evaluating his leadership, towards the end of his term, Sir Keir acknowledged in a BBC interview that the justice system continued to fail vulnerable victims, highlighting ongoing challenges despite his efforts.
For a while after graduating, Sir Keir lived above a brothel in north London.
Questions have persisted over Sir Keir’s backing of Jeremy Corbyn
At the age of 52, Sir Keir Starmer embarked on a career change by securing a safe Labour seat in north London, winning comfortably alongside his contemporary, Rishi Sunak. However, his entry into Parliament coincided with a challenging period for the Labour Party, freshly defeated in the general election and facing internal turmoil under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
Questions surrounding Sir Keir’s alignment with Jeremy Corbyn have been persistent throughout his journey from backbencher to Labour leader and now potentially to Downing Street.
His initial appointment as shadow immigration minister by Corbyn was short-lived, resigning less than a year later along with many others in protest following the Brexit referendum.
Despite these tensions, Sir Keir returned as shadow Brexit secretary, showcasing a pragmatic approach in navigating Labour’s stance on EU withdrawal.
Over time, Sir Keir’s stance on Corbyn evolved. Initially supportive in public statements and working towards electoral success, he later emerged as Corbyn’s successor after the 2019 election debacle for Labour.
Sir Keir made big changes to the Labour party during his time in opposition
Despite low expectations, Sir Keir’s leadership was seen as a potential catalyst for Labour’s rebuilding efforts, contrasting sharply with the long-standing assumption of Boris Johnson’s enduring governance.
Sir Keir’s Labour trailed Mr Johnson’s Conservatives in the polls for much of 2020 and 2021 when the Hartlepool by-election was held.
But that started to change after the first reports of Downing Street parties during the pandemic, when strict restrictions were in place around social gatherings.
There is a clear point in the polls where Labour overtakes the Conservatives in November 2021. Its lead increased significantly after the Liz Truss mini budget and has been consistent and significant ever since.
A ‘ruthless’ leader Sir Keir’s allies argue that wouldn’t have happened without big changes in the Labour Party. Sir Keir has sometimes been ruthless. Jeremy Corbyn was thrown out of the parliamentary party and ultimately barred from standing as a Labour candidate. Economic policy was tightened; meaning policies were junked if they weren’t seen as affordable. Sir Keir embraced British patriotism, using the union jack as a backdrop for speeches and getting his conference to sing God Save the King.
All of that has contributed to Sir Keir’s message of change. He spent the campaign arguing he had changed Labour and could change the country too.
The election result will also mean change for the Starmer family. Sir Keir, now 61, married his wife Victoria in 2007. Her intention is to keep working for the NHS in occupational health as he serves as prime minister.
Lady Starmer has been seen at some high-profile events like conference speeches, a rally last week – and at a Taylor Swift gig. But she is unlikely to play as prominent a role in public life as some partners have in the past.
Sir Keir and Victoria married in 2007
Sir Keir though has been candid about the impact high office could have, particularly on his teenage son and daughter. He told the BBC in 2021: “I am worried about my children. That is probably the single thing that does keep me awake – as to how we will protect them through this.” It’s a challenge the Starmers will now face as they move into Downing Street at the end of a testing, far from straightforward, journey.
A recent report has uncovered data revealing that nearly 1.8 million individuals in the UK now owe at least £50,000 in student loan.
According to figures from the Student Loans Company (SLC), over 61,000 people have debts exceeding £100,000, with an additional 50 individuals each owing over £200,000.
The release of these statistics follows a Freedom of Information (FOI) request seeking information on loan holders with above-average debts eligible to commence repayments.
Previously, the SLC reported that the average debt for borrowers in England starting repayments was just under £45,000, but recent government data shows this has risen to £48,470.
Debt levels can soar for students undertaking multiple or lengthy courses, compounded by accruing interest over time.
In the fiscal year 2023/24, approximately 2.8 million individuals in England made repayments on their student loans, highlighting that while only a small percentage face debts exceeding £100,000, a majority owe more than £50,000.
Earlier this year, the BBC revealed that the highest reported UK student debt stood at over £231,000. Recent updates now indicate that this figure has climbed to £252,000 within a span of three months.
Tom Allingham, from website Save The Student, said such debts were “alarming” but were “in no way indicative of the norm”.
The National Union of Students (NUS) branded it “ridiculous” that none of the main parties are offering “reform” of student finance in the election campaign.
BBC News has compileda table illustrating the number of student loan holders facing significant debts: more than £50,000, £100,000, and £200,000.
Graduates burdened with substantial debt have also voiced their apprehensions about the existing system.
One such individual is Titi, a senior electrical engineer based in Croydon, who preferred not to disclose his full name. His student debt has escalated to over £128,200, increasing by £788.11 from 6 April to 6 June this year.
A Ghanaian expatriate residing in the United Kingdom recently recounted her experiences navigatingthe UK healthcare system, highlighting the hurdles she encountered.
From the complexities of scheduling appointments to the challenges of accessing healthcare professionals, she expressed frustration with the system’s efficiency.
Despite following protocols diligently, she found it difficult to secure timely consultations with doctors.
In contrast, she praised Ghana’s healthcare system, noting its perceived superiority. In Ghana, she explained, patients can receive immediate care without the need for prior appointments.
This accessibility stands in stark contrast to her experiences in the UK, where she often faced delays and limited availability of medical professionals.
“In Ghana, you can simply go to the hospital when you feel unwell or have a fever. In the UK, you must register with a local hospital when you fall ill. You then have to call the hospital to schedule an appointment.
Appointment times are restricted, with some hospitals only allowing bookings between certain hours,” she explained in a video posted by Instablog9japbm on Instagram.
“If you call outside of those hours, you cannot book an appointment, even if you are sick. When you call at 9 o’clock, you might be told that you are the 20th person in line and will have to wait.
After waiting, you may be informed that the doctor can only see you the next day or later. All of this while you are unwell,” she added.
Solomon Amissah, aged 37 and a resident of Mount Lane, Bracknell, has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail following a fatal collision, according to Thames Valley Police.
The sentencing took place at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, June 20.
Amissah pleaded guilty to charges including causing death by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit, and driving without third party insurance. These charges stem from an incident that occurred on December 17, 2022.
The court heard that Amissah had attended a Christmas party and subsequently got into his car while under the influence of alcohol, driving above the speed limit on Mill Lane in Bracknell.
Shockingly, he proceeded along the wrong carriageway against the flow of traffic before entering the Mill Pond roundabout in the wrong direction. Continuing on the dual carriageway, Amissah collided with another vehicle.
Tragically, the collision resulted in the death of a woman in her 30s, described as a mother-of-three, who sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene.
Detective Constable Joy Jarvis, the investigating officer, condemned Amissah’s actions as “one of the most dangerous pieces of driving” she has investigated.
She highlighted Amissah’s blatant disregard for the safety of others by driving intoxicated and distracted by his mobile phone along the wrong carriageway for nearly a mile.
Jarvis emphasized the gravity of Amissah’s actions, stating that the sentencing underscores the severe consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and using mobile phones while driving. She expressed condolences to the victim’s family, underscoring the lasting impact of Amissah’s reckless behavior.
Amissah was arrested on the day of the incident and formally charged on February 8, 2024. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been disqualified from driving for eight years and must undergo an extended re-test to regain his license.
The nationality of Amissah has not been revealed but it is believed that he traces his origin to Ghana. The name Amissah is one adopted by some families coming from the Central Region in the West African country.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak returned home for an interview before attending the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Allied troops’ arrival in Normandy, France.
Domestically, his Conservative Party is trailing behind the Labour Party in the polls.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized on Friday for leaving D-Day anniversary commemorations in northern France early.
He left the Thursday event, held to commemorate the landing of Allied troops in German-occupied France 80 years ago, to conduct a television interview for his reelection campaign in the UK.
Sunak misses main D-Day ceremony Sunak returned home before he could attend a ceremony at Ohama Beach on the coast of the northwestern French region of Normandy.
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden attended the event. King Charles III also traveled to France to participate in the commemorations.
“After the conclusion of the British event in Normandy, I returned back to the UK,” Sunak said in a post on the platform X, formerly Twitter.
“On reflection, it was a mistake not to stay in France longer — and I apologize,” he said. “The last thing I want is for the commemorations to be overshadowed by politics.
“I care deeply about veterans and have been honored to represent the UK at a number of events in Portsmouthand France over the past two days and to meet those who fought so bravely,” he added.
Sunak was interviewed by Britain’s ITV news broadcaster. The program is due to air on Wednesday.
Opposition politicians criticize Sunak
Jonathan Ash, a member of Parliament for the main opposition Labour Party, accused Sunak of prioritizing “his own vanity TV appearances over our veterans.”
The head of the centrist Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, said Sunak had brought “shame” to the office of prime minister in a “total dereliction of duty” and had “let down” the UK.
Sunak has been serving as Britain’s prime minister since October 2022, after succeeding Liz Truss from the same party.
Polls indicate that the Conservative Party, which has been in power for 14 years and seen five different prime ministers, may face a loss in the general election on July 4.
A high-level drug dealer and one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives, Nana Oppong, was captured while trying to enter Morocco hidden in the back of a lorry.
Sky News reports that the 43-year-old, also known as “Enz,” has been extradited back to the UK and now faces a life sentence for orchestrating the execution of Robert Powell outside a party in Essex.
Robert Powell, 50, who managed rapper Dutchavelli, was shot eight times outside Hills House in Roydon in the early hours of April 13, 2020.
The attack, executed with a 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol, left Powell with 15 bullet wounds, some caused by the same bullet re-entering his body, including one that dislodged a gold grill from his mouth.
Despite bystanders’ efforts to save him, Powell succumbed to his injuries the following day in the hospital.
Prosecutors revealed that Mr Oppong orchestrated the execution due to a personal grievance with Powell.
The prosecution detailed how Mr Oppong led a team of accomplices, including drivers and spotters, to carry out the murder.
Following the shooting, Mr Oppong fled the country, declaring in messages from abroad, “Bro, don’t think I’m coming back” and “I ain’t doing no time, bro.”
The National Crime Agency named Mr Oppong one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives. He was eventually caught using a Maltese passport in Morocco.
Prosecutor Justin Rouse KC described Oppong as the “instigator, protagonist, and principal organizer” of the killing.
Oppong reportedly arrived at the scene in a Ford Kuga with cloned plates, where a gunman, possibly Oppong or another individual from the vehicle, executed Powell.
Oppong was tried at London’s Woolwich Crown Court and found guilty of murder, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, causing grievous bodily harm, and possession of a prohibited weapon.
His co-defendant, Israar Shah, 39, from Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, was also convicted of murder and firearm possession.
Shah fled to Spain post-murder but was extradited to face trial alongside Oppong.
The court learned that other participants in the murder, including Temitope Adeyinka, known as ‘Limo,’ remain at large.
Despite denying involvement, Shah admitted to being at the scene in his Toyota Prius with Adeyinka but claimed no active role in the murder.
Oppong, however, denied being present at the scene altogether.
Oppong’s criminal history includes previous charges and acquittals for multiple murders.
He was cleared of murdering Eugene Brown and Patrick Ford outside a birthday party in Forest Gate, London, in 2010 after juries failed to reach verdicts.
He did, however, receive a two-year sentence for perverting the course of justice after CCTV footage implicated him.
In 2015, he was acquitted of stabbing Ashley Latty to death but was sentenced to four years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
After lots of talk about when there would be a new vote, Sunak, who is 44 years old, said outside his home at 10 Downing Street that he was calling the election earlier than some people thought he would. This is a risky move because his party is not doing well in the opinion polls.
Sunak is not doing well in the polls and doesn’t have much support within his party. He is relying on a small group of advisers to help him through the upcoming election.
However, he seems to have made up his mind that now is the right time to present his plans for a new term to voters, because the economy is doing well with inflation going down and the economy growing quickly.
The person who used to work in banking and finance became the prime minister just under two years ago. Since then, he has had a hard time figuring out what he believes in and is getting more and more frustrated because he thinks his accomplishments are not being recognized.
Both parties have started campaigning for an election. They are already attacking each other on the economy and defense.
Labour says the government has not managed the economy well for 14 years. This has made people’s lives worse, and businesses have not had the stability they need to grow.
Labour said they were prepared for an election before it was announced.
“We are prepared to go anytime the prime minister decides to have an election. ” We have a plan and we are ready for an election. We believe the country wants a general election, said Labour leader Starmer’s spokesperson.
When asked if the United Kingdom The UK said they would also stop giving weapons to Israel if they attacked Rafah. But the UK doesn’t give as many weapons to Israel as the US does.
“The UK only gives a small amount of Israel’s weapons and it’s not the main supplier,” Cameron said on the BBC. “We have a system for giving out permits, and we can take them away if it’s believed that there’s a high chance of a major human rights violation happening in other countries. ”
US President Joe Biden said that if Israel attacks Rafah, a major Hamas area in Gaza, then the US won’t give them weapons and military equipment anymore.
The Labour Party and human rights groups in Britain are saying that the UK should also stop selling weapons or parts for weapons used in an attack in Rafah.
On Friday, the US government said that Israel probably broke the rules of war by using weapons from the US in Gaza. However, they said that because of the war, US officials couldn’t be completely sure about the specific airstrikes.
He said this after hearing that the UK might send soldiers to help bring supplies from a pier the US is building.
Cameron said that his government thinks it’s not a good idea to have British soldiers on the beach. Instead, they will probably have someone else deliver the aid.
The auction for the napkin that famously kickstarted Lionel Messi’s career at Barcelona when he was just 13 years old has commenced this week, with an estimated price range of £300,000–£500,000 ($374,700–$624,500).
Current bidding for the item has reached £220,000, and the auction, hosted by the British auction house Bonhams, will remain open until May 17.
Originally scheduled for March, the auction was delayed due to a dispute over the ownership of the napkin, which has been in the possession of Horacio Gaggioli, an Argentine agent, for the past two decades.
Josep Minguella, another adviser involved in Messi’s transfer to Barcelona, has also laid claim to the napkin after news broke of its auction earlier this year.
Gaggioli disputed this, while Bonhams told ESPN there were “no problems” regarding the sale of the napkin, which is listed on their website as “property of Horacio Gaggioli.”
Minguella has yet to respond to ESPN’s request for comment. The story dates back to 2000 when Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge, began to express doubts about Barcelona’s commitment to his son’s development. At that time, Carles Rexach, the club’s director of football, hastily arranged an agreement on a napkin.
This impromptu contract was signed by Rexach, Minguella, who played a role in bringing Messi to Barcelona from South America, and Gaggioli, who facilitated the deal. It served as a promise for Messi’s first professional contract.
Since then, the napkin has been kept by Gaggioli in a secure vault in Andorra, a principality located north of Barcelona between Spain and France. Attempts to negotiate its inclusion in Barcelona’s museum at the Camp Nou stadium have fallen through in the past.
The agreement on the napkin was made on December 14, 2000, at a tennis club in Barcelona after Rexach received an urgent call from Jorge Messi, threatening to take his son back to Argentina.
“That was when, thinking on my feet, I decided everything,” Rexach told ESPN in 2020 to mark the 20th anniversary of the signing.
“Why a napkin? Because it was the only thing I had available to hand. I saw the only way to relax Jorge was signing something, giving him some proof, so I asked for a napkin from the waiter.
“I wrote: ‘In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000 and in the presence of Messrs Minguella and Horacio, Carles Rexach, FC Barcelona’s sporting director, hereby agrees, under his responsibility and regardless of any dissenting opinions, to sign the player Lionel Messi, provided that we keep to the amounts agreed upon.’
“I told Jorge that my signature was there and that there were witnesses, that with my name I would take direct responsibility, that there was nothing else to talk about and to bepatient for a few days because Leo could already consider himself a Barca player.”

The video of his arrest was reportedly first posted online in February 2024.
While admitting to engaging with the girls and travelling for five hours to meet one of them, Ishmael denied having any malicious intent towards the children.
“Why did you arrange to meet her then? Why did you ask for pictures just in her pants? And you were going to buy her a new phone just to have better pictures?” a male interrogator is heard saying.
“So you’ve asked for indecent images of a child as well,” the female official also adds.

Sunak announced a new law last year that would make it against the law to sell tobacco to people born after January 1, 2009. If the bill is approved, Britain will have some of the strongest laws against smoking in the world. Officials say it will make a new generation of people in Britain who do not smoke.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill says that kids who are 15 or younger will not be allowed to buy tobacco. Officials want to increase the legal age to buy cigarettes in England by one year each year until it becomes illegal for everyone to buy them. They hope to achieve this by 2027.
The law also stops young people from vaping. It makes it illegal to sell cheap throwaway vapes and limits the flavors, so kids can’t get hooked on nicotine.
On Tuesday, the lawmakers voted 383 to 67 to continue discussing the bill after talking about it all afternoon. Even though many health experts and the Labour Party supported the bill, Sunak faced opposition from some members of his own party who thought the proposals were not conservative.
Conservative lawmakers were allowed to vote however they personally wanted instead of having to follow the rules of their party.
Critics, like the smokers’ rights group FOREST, said the change could make a black market and will make it harder for adults. Some important people in the Conservative Party, like Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, said the plans are not in line with conservative values because they limit personal freedoms.
Truss said the bill was trying to show good intentions but didn’t really do much to help adults in the future. She said this during a debate in Parliament on Tuesday.
Other well-known members of the Conservative party, like the business secretary Kemi Badenoch, who is also a Cabinet minister, did not support the bill.
The plans were thought to have been inspired by similar ideas from New Zealand, but the new government in that country cancelled the plans earlier this year.
The number of people who smoke in the UK has gone down by two-thirds since the 1970s. But there are still about 6. 4 million people in the country who smoke, which is about 13% of the population. These are official numbers.
Officials say that smoking leads to around 80,000 deaths each year in the UK, and is still the main reason for death, disability and bad health that can be avoided.

Iran’s United Nations mission said that if the UN Security Council had punished the people responsible for the attack, then Iran wouldn’t feel the need to punish them.
“We will harm anyone who hurts us. ” “We are ready to protect Israel’s security, both by defending and attacking,” he said after visiting an air force base.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock asked the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian to be very careful and not make things worse.
Russia’s government says it’s best for its citizens to avoid going to the Middle East, especially to Israel, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories.
“Everyone needs to be careful not to make the situation in the region worse. It’s not very stable or predictable, so it’s crucial to act responsibly. ” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference.
‘Possibility of making a mistake’
British foreign minister David Cameron told Amirabdollahian that Iran should not involve the Middle East in a bigger fight.
Cameron said he is very worried that making a mistake could lead to more fighting.

During Christmas, they said they were responsible for the few people crossing the border. But now, with almost 800 people coming in over the weekend, where are the Home Secretary and Prime Minister.
This is a total mess. It’s time for the Conservative party to take action and use the same plan as the Labour party to catch criminal smuggling gangs. They should create a new police unit that can work across borders and set up a new team to send back people who are not supposed to be in the country.

The UK agriculture has been greatly impacted by Britain leaving the EU, which meant that Britain was no longer part of the EU’s free trade area and complicated farming regulations.
Many British farmers supported Brexit because they didn’t like the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy. Many people are saying that after Brexit, trade deals with countries like Australia and New Zealand are allowing cheap imports to come into the UK and compete with products made in Britain.
The UK has decided to wait before checking imports that were supposed to start after the country finished breaking ties with the EU in 2020. Farmers are worried this could harm efforts to keep diseases out.
Liz Webster, a farmer who grows beef and crops in western England, is one of the protest leaders. She said the government has completely let us down.
She said that people support British farming and food and want to keep high standards and help local producers. “We need to completely change our trade deals and stop them quickly because they will greatly harm British food. “
Experts in the US and Europe say that the hacking group “APT31” is working for China’s Ministry of State Security. The officials said that defense contractors, people who criticize the government, and security companies were also affected.

Harry and over 40 other people are taking legal action against News Group Newspapers (NGN) because they think the Sun and the News of the World invaded their privacy unlawfully from the mid-1990s to 2016.
Other people who are also claiming money include British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, actor Hugh Grant, and some former important politicians. Doreen Lawrence is also part of another case against the company that prints the Daily Mail newspaper, along with Harry.
The trial for the case against NGN will start in January and could last up to eight weeks.
On Wednesday, the claimants’ lawyers asked Judge Timothy Fancourt for permission to add new accusations to their case against NGN. They want to say that senior executives gave incorrect information to parliament and a public inquiry.
Murdoch, who is 93 years old, is accused of giving false information on purpose. Rebekah Brooks, the chief executive of News UK, is also accused of lying or giving misleading information during her trial in 2014.
A person from NGN said that the people making accusations against NGN staff are being dishonest and trying to harm their reputation.
“These claims are not about getting money for people who were victims of hacking or getting information illegally. Be very careful when thinking about them,” said the spokesperson.
NGN’s lawyers said the new accusations, which included 200 new journalists, executives, and private investigators, were not needed, too much, and not related.
“It is becoming more obvious that some people in the claimant group are using this document to campaign against tabloid newspapers,” said Anthony Hudson, the lawyer for NGN, in court.
Hudson said in legal documents that accusations against Brooks and others would make NGN have to redo criminal trials or investigate the investigation.
Old accusations
In 2011, NGN said sorry for lots of journalists at the News of the World hacking phones. The owner, Murdoch, who was born in Australia, closed the newspaper because of the angry reaction.
NGN has solved over 1,300 complaints, but the group has always said that the staff at the Sun did not do anything wrong. Brooks, a person who used to be in charge of a newspaper, was found not guilty of hacking and other crimes after a long trial in 2014.
David Sherborne, the lawyer for Harry and the other people suing, said in court that both Murdoch and Brooks knew that the original statement from NGN, saying only one reporter was breaking the law, was not true.
Get all the important news about the Royal Family in one place.
They and other leaders were not honest when they made these statements because they knew they were not true at the time.
NGN’s Hudson said the changed claims were based on old documents, and in the past versions, Murdoch was only mentioned briefly with no accusations against him.
The people suing also said they want to use evidence from a former IT worker. They believe that Brooks’ computer hard drive was hidden and maybe broken on purpose in 2011 to hide her involvement in something wrong.
The court will listen to Harry’s request to change his case for the next two days. They will decide later if they can include the new accusations.

“Dark rumours circulating in Accra of a politically exposed Ghanaian bigshot knocking heads with British airport customs about millions of sterling being moved through the UK without the necessary paperwork. Frantic digging for trusted sources all over,” the originator of the claim, Bright Simons, stated on X.
Following Bright Simon’s post, some media houses including Citinewsroom,Daily Guide Network, Asaase Radio, Modern Ghana and Peace FM published reports indicating that the UK authorities have denied seizing any monies.
“Following checks by Citi FM from both agencies to verify the claims, the two agencies stated that they have no record of any such amount seized from any Ghanaian,” the March 18, 2024, Citinews report said.
Fact-Check Ghana sent the UK’s His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) office questions on Monday, March 18, 2024.
In response to Fact-Check Ghana on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the HMRC says it could not confirm or deny investigations into the matter.
“We neither confirm nor deny investigations,” the email response signed by Ashleigh Prince, Press Officer – Law Enforcement, HMRC stated.
Security expert Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired) says the response from the HMRC could mean that “given the sensitivity of the case, the authorities may not want to jeopardize the investigations, if any.” “It can also mean they don’t have enough information or evidence to definitely confirm or refute the claim or statement. It indicates ambiguity or lack of clarity to acknowledge the uncertainty rather than making a definitive statement without proper evidence,” he said.
The United Kingdom’s His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is the tax authority of the U.K. government. The agency is responsible for collecting taxes, paying child benefits, regulating tax and customs laws, and enforcing the payment of minimum wage by employers. Last year, a digger driver named Greg Crawley found a marble head of a Roman lady at the Burghley House in England. He was doing renovations at the 16th century estate when he made the discovery.
Two weeks later, another statue was discovered near the first one. The artifacts were cleaned, checked, and put back together by an expert. The expert said the statue was made in the 1st or 2nd century.
Specialists observed that a metal rod was put into the statue so it could be connected to a bust or pedestal. This was something that Italian sellers did in the late 1700s when they were selling old things to rich people visiting Italy.
“It is thought that the ninth Earl bought the sculpture during his trips to Italy in the 1760s and brought it back to Burghley,” the house explained.
The UK Financial Intelligence Unit and the Border Agency are reported to have refuted claims suggesting that £15 million has been seized from an individual from Ghana.
Earlier, Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, revealed that it is rumoured that a Ghanaian bigshot was battling with British Airport customs over some millions being moved through the UK without the necessary paperwork.
Following this, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was said to have been arrested in the UK with £15 million confiscated from him.
Now, Citi FM reports that both agencies say they have no record of such an amount being impounded from any Ghanaian.
