Partey says he would have become a painter if he hadn’t been a player

Arsenal and Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has shared that if football hadn’t worked out for him, he likely would have pursued a career in painting.

Before choosing football, Partey had started training as a painter—a trade his father encouraged him to explore because of his natural talent. Although he gave it a shot, his love for the game eventually won.

“Maybe I would be a painter,” he told The Footy Culture during a quick-fire Q&A session. “I used to be good at it, but now I don’t know,” he added.

“I remember one day my father took me to a painting shop to start painting, but I went there once, and the rest of it was on the field.”

Despite his early interest, Partey didn’t confirm whether he plans to return to painting one day.

Meanwhile, his season with Arsenal took a hit after the club was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain.

Partey has been quite impressive following his injury return. He marked his comeback with an impressive display against RealMadrid after which many called for a contract extension for him.

Thomas Partey doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves- Declan Rice

Declan Rice has showered praise on Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, insisting that the Black Stars deputy captain is vastly underrated.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s high-stakes UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, Rice highlighted Partey’s importance to the team.

Arsenal head into the match in France trailing 1-0 on aggregate, having missed Partey’s presence in the first leg due to suspension.

The Gunners struggled early in that match, with PSG taking control and scoring the decisive goal in the fourth minute through Ousmane Dembele.

Reflecting on the upcoming clash set for Wednesday, May 7, Rice expressed his admiration for Partey, noting that the former Atletico Madrid star brings immense quality and composure to the midfield.

“The best thing about playing with Thomas [Partey] is the calmness he brings to play with the team. Before I came to Arsenal there was so much talk about how good he is.

He doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves. I am quite lucky Thomas is there and he lets me roam up and down.”

Partey is in the final months of his contract with Arsenal and negotiations between his camp and the Gunners on a new deal have been reported.

Partey expected to exit Arsenal this summer – Reports

Thomas Partey is drawing interest from several top European clubs as his Arsenal contract nears its end, setting the stage for a high-profile free transfer this summer.

With no renewal talks underway, sources close to the Ghanaian midfielder indicate that Arsenal is unlikely to extend his stay beyond the 2025/26 season.

Partey, who arrived in a £45 million move from Atletico Madrid in 2020, is now expected to depart as the club plans a midfield revamp.

Both Partey and Jorginho are approaching the end of their contracts, with Arsenal reportedly eyeing Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi as part of their restructuring plans.

Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus have all expressed interest in signing Partey, while clubs from Saudi Arabia have also made inquiries.

However, the 31-year-old prefers to stay in Europe, with a return to Spain—potentially to Barcelona—emerging as his favored option. Despite this, his next destination remains undecided.

“I would go for him” – Michael Essien’s response to comparison with Partey

Ghanaian football legend Michael Essien has made a surprising statement, saying that if he had to choose, he would pick Thomas Partey over himself at their best playing years.

Essien, who played for Ghana in the 2006 and 2014 World Cups held in Germany and Brazil, is considered one of the country’s greatest footballers.

During his career, he achieved major success with Chelsea, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Essien praised Partey’s outstanding skills and admitted that he would prefer the Arsenal midfielder over himself in his prime.

“Between myself and Thomas Partey in our primes, I don’t think I would pick myself. I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know,” Essien stated.

“I will never put myself ahead of Thomas Partey. It is two different generations, so I will put Partey ahead. He is that guy I love and I speak to him now and then,” he added.

Thomas Partey started his professional football journey with Atlético Madrid in 2015 and soon established himself as one of the top defensive midfielders of his time. During his spell at the club, he won major trophies, including La Liga, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

His outstanding performances earned him a €50 million transfer to Arsenal in 2020.

Since joining the English club, the 31-year-old has been an important part of the team, playing over 100 Premier League matches and helping them win the FA Community Shield.

I had no choice – Mikel Arteta explains Partey’s position in Aston Villa clash

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta has defended his decision to use Thomas Partey as a right-back during their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The Ghana international was deployed in that role against Unai Emery’s side last weekend. While Partey faced some criticism for his performance, Arteta explained the tactical reasoning behind the change.

“I had no choice. I didn’t have another right full-back,” he said.

“Who plays when Jurrien [Timber] isn’t available or his load is too high? I didn’t have another right-sided centre-back [against Aston Villa],” he added.

Arsenal seemed set for two wins in a row after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz gave them a 2-0 lead.

But Aston Villa responded, with Youri Tielemans scoring first and Ollie Watkins taking advantage of Partey’s defensive mistake to level the game against goalkeeper David Raya.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who earlier defeated Brentford 2-0 and still have a game in hand.

Arsenal will try to get back to winning ways when they face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League tonight, followed by a Premier League match against Wolves this weekend.

Unforgivable! – Gary Neville slams Partey over costly error in Arsenal’s draw against Aston Villa

Former Manchester United player and football analyst, Gary Neville, has criticized Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey for his performance in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League on January 18, 2024.

Neville questioned why Partey failed to mark Ollie Watkins properly, which led to Watkins scoring a crucial goal.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville described Partey’s mistake as “unforgivable” and said it cost Arsenal the chance to stay ahead in the match.

However, he praised Watkins for capitalizing on the defensive error to secure a point for Aston Villa.

“You can see Partey marking Watkins, and then it’s unforgivable, really, that he just steps back out and doesn’t go with him. He deserved his goal,” Neville said while speaking on Sky Sports.

Despite Arsenal’s dominance in the game, they failed to retain their 2-0 lead after Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz put them ahead.

Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins scored two goals, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

Arsenal’s title hope now hang in the balance as they trail league leaders Liverpool by six points.

“We have to be prepared” – Mikel Arteta on Partey’s departure

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has suggested that Thomas Partey, the Black Stars midfielder, could leave the club at the end of the season.

During a pre-match press conference, Arteta discussed Arsenal’s plans for the future, noting that some players will have expiring contracts.

When asked about the possibility of signing Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi, Arteta stressed the importance of being ready for changes in the squad.

“We have some situations with contracts expiring. We have to be prepared,” he said, as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Arteta’s remarks imply that Arsenal might not renew Partey’s contract, potentially ending the Ghanaian midfielder’s five-year tenure at the club.

Partey made the move to Arsenal in 2020 when the club triggered his £45 million release clause from Atlético Madrid.

Man Utd fans jeered at Partey during the FA Cup match at the Emirates Stadium

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey faced boos and jeers during Arsenal’s FA Cup match against Manchester United on Sunday, January 12, 2024.

Partey came on as a substitute for Dutch defender Jurrien Timber during extra time in the third round of the FA Cup. However, Manchester United fans in the away section of the Emirates Stadium greeted his every touch with disapproval.

Despite the hostility, Partey stayed focused and successfully scored his penalty during the shootout for Arsenal.

Earlier in the match, Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United the lead with a brilliant goal after Alejandro Garnacho took advantage of a slip by Gabriel Magalhães to set him up.

United’s momentum was disrupted in the 61st minute when Diego Dalot was sent off for a dangerous foul, leaving the team with 10 players.

Arsenal seized the opportunity and applied intense pressure, eventually finding an equalizer through defender Gabriel.

Despite having the numerical advantage, Arsenal failed to secure a winner, and the game ended 1-1 after extra time.

In the penalty shootout, Kai Havertz missed a crucial penalty, allowing Manchester United to win 5-4 and progress to the fourth round of the competition.

  • Arsenal fans slam Partey after 0-2 defeat in Newscastle clash

Arsenal fans are upset with midfielder Thomas Partey after the team’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at the Emirates on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

The 31-year-old returned to his regular midfield position after playing as a right-back in the previous match against Brighton, with fans hoping for a solid performance.

However, Partey struggled to make an impact in the game and was substituted after 60 minutes, with Jorginho replacing him.

Jorginho immediately improved the team’s play, creating more chances, completing more touches, and making more accurate passes during his short time on the field.

Thomas Partey has been an important player for Arsenal in many matches, receiving praise for his efforts. However, his recent performance led to strong criticism from fans, who shared their frustrations on social media.

Some fans felt that Partey was unfairly blamed for the team’s overall poor performance, while others felt he didn’t meet expectations and played below his usual standard.

The Arsenal midfielder posted a picture of himself strolling through the streets of London, pushing his newborn in a baby stroller. Partey and his partner, Janine Mackson, celebrated the arrival of their first child in January 2024.

Due to his omission from the squad, Partey will not participate in the upcoming international games. Black Stars head coach Otto Addo remained discreet about the decision, only revealing that he had a “confidential” discussion with Partey regarding the matter.

“Partey wanted to come, but I made it quite clear to him that he cannot come,” Otto Addo told the media during the squad unveiling.

This is what Partey eats before every matches

Ghanaian footballer Thomas Partey has shared his favourite pre-match meal, revealing he relies on porridge with coconut milk before every game.

The 31-year-old Arsenal midfielder disclosed his go-to meal during an interview with Arsenal’s media team ahead of last Sunday’s match against Liverpool.

In a video posted by the club on social media, Partey responded with a simple “coconut milk and porridge” when asked about his pre-game food ritual, a routine he says keeps him prepared for the pitch.

Partey, who has excelled both in his primary midfield role and occasionally as a right-back, appears to be sticking with this unique food choice, and some Arsenal fans found his preference amusing and unexpected.

Other Arsenal players also shared their pre-match meal favourites. Mikel Merino, who scored his first goal for Arsenal in their recent 2-2 draw with Liverpool, prefers spaghetti with tomato sauce, while Italy’s Jorginho and Oleksandr Zinchenko both opted for pasta—with Zinchenko adding a twist of “cajun pasta with chicken.”

In the hard-fought match, Arsenal held the lead twice but were met with strong resistance from Arne Slot’s Liverpool side, who equalized both times, ending the game in a draw.

Partey’s future at Arsenal – Mikel Arteta speaks

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed plans to hold talks regarding the future of midfielder Thomas Partey, recognizing the Ghanaian international’s crucial contribution to the squad.

At 31, Partey has enjoyed a strong comeback this season, having already accumulated 799 minutes in the Premier League—significantly more than his total playing time in the previous 2023/24 season.

Since his transfer from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, Partey has featured in 13 games this season, scoring once and starting in 12 of those matches. Despite occasional criticism, Arteta commended Partey’s current form and flexibility on the field, particularly as the player’s contract is set to expire next summer.

“The one thing we needed was Thomas to be at the level we wanted,” Arteta told reporters on Friday.

“He’s working hard and playing really well in different positions, adapting to various demands, and he’s coping excellently. He’s a big player for us,” Arteta said, adding, “He’s in a really good place, and we’ll have these discussions [about his future with Arsenal].”

Originally, Arsenal had planned to allow Thomas Partey’s contract to conclude without pursuing an extension. However, his recent performances have opened up the possibility of reconsidering this approach. Partey’s experience and strong form this season could prove invaluable for Arsenal’s squad depth as they look ahead to the 2025/26 season.

Partey has also attracted interest from clubs like Barcelona and Juventus. While these links remain speculative, his skill set and presence could be crucial assets, especially if Arsenal seeks to maintain a competitive edge both domestically and in European competitions.

Partey is firmly convinced that Otto Addo is on the path to becoming an elite coach, and Ghana will greatly benefit from his expertise.

“He [Otto Addo] has his ideas, and he makes them very clear. He makes sure everyone knows what he wants to do, and he translates that to the players. The technical team is always ready to help him, so I think he is on a good journey.

He is the one we have to look up to because he has experience, he has played in this team, and he knows everything around the team and what the team needs.

We have to follow him because he has the best ideas,” Partey told SuperSport.

Thomas Partey also assured the players’ readiness to do their best and win the game for Ghana.

“I think it will be difficult games, but we have a good team.

I have not watched our opponents, but we have played against them, and we know how difficult it is to play in Africa,” the 30-year-old told SuperSport.

“I think we don’t have to be favourites but rather go out and show our quality, do our best, and try to win because all we need is to qualify. If we don’t win, we don’t get to qualify, so we have to go all out and win,” he added.

Kick-off for the game against Angola is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Ian Wright slams Partey after draw against Brighton

Arsenal legend Ian Wright expressed his disappointment with Thomas Partey’s performance during the Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Wright was especially critical of Partey for not tracking a Brighton player in the buildup to their equaliser.

He argued that if Partey had followed the player more closely, he could have been in position to clear the rebound after David Raya’s initial save.

“When you look at the play, you look at Thomas Partey. He’s literally run past him,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“Thomas Partey has to recognise in that instant he has to go all the way with Pedro and at least make a challenge. Pedro blasts past him and he’s just kind of jogging back.

“Those are the things that, when you look back at that, you will say, well, that could have been avoided.”

Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2024/2025 Premier League season was halted after a 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

The Gunners took the lead in the first half when German forward Kai Havertz expertly lobbed the ball over the Brighton goalkeeper.

However, the match took a turn early in the second half when Declan Rice received a red card, forcing Arsenal to play defensively for much of the remaining time.

Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage and eventually found the equaliser through winger Joao Pedro.

Martinez’s admiration for Partey was evident after the Arsenal player scored a crucial goal in their match against Villa on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Reflecting on the goal he allowed, Martinez admitted that he didn’t react with full force because he didn’t immediately recognize that it was Partey who took the shot.

The Argentine keeper acknowledged the power and precision of Partey’s strike, further cementing his respect for the Arsenal star’s abilities on the pitch.

“I tried my best to save it. I didn’t know it was a shot from Partey until I raised my head after the ball went in. He’s one of the best midfielders in the league,” the 2022 World Cup winner said.

Thomas Partey sealed the win with a brilliant strike from outside the box, placing the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner in a 2-0 victory. Although Martinez got a hand to it, he couldn’t prevent the goal.

This marked Partey’s first goal of the season as Arsenal secured their second win of the new campaign.

Jorginho’s contract renewal triggers debate regarding Partey’s prospects at Arsenal

There is a looming controversy in the camp of Arsenal over the future of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey after the club renewed the contract of Italian player Jorginho.

Jorginho signed a new short-term contract with Arsenal to keep him at the Emirates Stadium until at least next year.

The Italian international joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day in January 2023 for a fee of up to £12 million.

Although initially an unpopular addition, Jorginho has gone on to establish himself as a key member of Mikel Arteta’s squad, making 51 appearances.

With the renewal of the 32-year-old former Chelsea player’s contract, fans have begun expressing their concerns over the uncertainty of Thomas Partey’s future at the Emirates.

The 30-year-old Ghanaian, who joined Mikel Arteta’s side in 2020, has one year left on his contract.

Since joining the Gunners, Partey has become an instrumental force in the midfield, ensuring his dominance in the heart of the field and leading Arsenal to become one of the strongest title contenders for the Premier League title.

With Arteta having a number of options in midfield, such as Declan Rice, Jorginho, and Mohamed Elneny, it appears the Gunners might want to trade the former Atletico Madrid player.

Already, some clubs in the Saudi League have expressed interest in Partey, while the likes of Juventus and Barcelona are reported to be eyeing the midfielder.

Should Arsenal fail to renew Partey’s deal, the former Atletico Madrid man could leave for a fee between £20 and £25 million.

Since the renewal of Jorginho’s contract, fans have been reacting and asking for Partey’s contract to be renewed.

With Arsenal set to play five competitions next season, fans want the club to keep Partey.

Saudi interest in Partey heighten as he nears potential Arsenal exit – Reports

Saudi Arabian clubs are once again eyeing Thomas Partey, the talented midfielder of Ghana’s Black Stars, along with his Arsenal teammate Gabriel Jesus, reports Football Insider.

Last summer, Saudi Pro League clubs showed keen interest in Partey, who opted to stay focused on Arsenal at the time.

Among the clubs expressing interest were Al Ahli, Al Nassr, and Al Khaleej. Despite the attention, Partey remained committed to Arsenal. However, with his future at the London club uncertain, Saudi clubs are back in the picture.

Barcelona is also keeping a close watch on Partey as they seek to bolster their midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Although they had him on their radar in January 2024, concrete interest from the Catalan side didn’t materialize then.

Now, a report from Catalan journalist Adrian Sanchez indicates that Partey is back on Barcelona’s shortlist for a potential summer move. Arsenal seems willing to entertain offers for the former Atletico Madrid player, reportedly setting the price tag between £20 to £25 million.

Should Partey depart, Arsenal has reportedly earmarked Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz as his replacement. Partey, who joined Arsenal in 2020 on a five-year deal, now has just one year remaining on his contract.

Arsenal are facing a dilemma regarding the future of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, whose stint with the team has been rocked by injuries.

Thomas Partey’s recurring injuries have led to him missing a significant number of games this season, more than any previous season, casting doubts on his dependability.

Although he has faced challenges this season, Thomas Partey’s impressive performances in recent matches against Chelsea and Tottenham have sparked discussions among Arsenal supporters and commentators.

Having made only eleven appearances in the Premier League this season, Arsenal is confronted with the choice of either keeping the 30-year-old midfielder for another term, hoping he will surmount his injury issues and make a meaningful contribution to the team’s achievements, or capitalising on his value before his contract runs out.

As per Transfermarkt, Thomas Partey’s current market value stands at €20,000,000.

Arsenal is reportedly open to summer offers for midfielder Thomas Partey, largely due to his ongoing injury issues.

The decision follows Arsenal’s disappointing Champions League exit against Bayern Munich, with the team falling short with a 3-2 aggregate score in the quarterfinals.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal is planning to focus on offloading four players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

This list includes Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Aaron Ramsdale, and, notably, Thomas Partey.

Partey, a 30-year-old Ghanaian international, joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid on October 5, 2020. Despite a promising start, injuries have plagued his time at Arsenal, limiting him to just eight Premier League appearances this season.

Despite being valued at €20,000,000 by Transfermarkt, Arsenal seems inclined to reconsider its midfield options due to Partey’s frequent injuries.

Partey, at 30, has been limited to just four Premier League appearances this season due to injury, and his return to action is not anticipated until January.

Complicating matters, Arsenal is likely to miss Partey for an additional month as he joins the Ghana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Gunners were reportedly open to selling Partey earlier, particularly after the arrival of Declan Rice in July.

However, a suitable bid did not materialise before the transfer deadline.

Juventus has emerged as a potential destination for Thomas Partey, with the Italian club expressing interest in securing his services.

As Arsenal explores the possibility of Partey’s departure, it could pave the way for the club to address Arteta’s priorities in the transfer market and make the necessary additions to the squad.
