Murray loses to Fritz in Washington 3-hour marathon

Andy Murray fell just short in a grueling three-hour battle against world number nine Taylor Fritz in the round of 16 at the Citi Open.

The 36-year-old, a runner-up in Washington 17 years ago, appeared to be on the cusp of another notable victory since his return from hip surgery. He had break point opportunities for a 4-2 advantage in the deciding set.

However, Fritz, the tournament’s top seed and the American number one, successfully fended off all three break points and ultimately secured his 40th victory of 2023 with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.

A thrilling contest faced a momentary interruption as a group of rowdy protesters, who had tossed oversized tennis balls onto the court, were escorted out of the stands.

Murray had already vented his frustration by smashing his racket against the floor after losing his serve in the opening game, which included two double faults among six unforced errors.

The Scottish player had been a point away from a 3-0 deficit, but he displayed improvement as the set unfolded. He managed to break back for 5-5 while Fritz served for the set, staving off two set points and converting his initial break point with a well-executed drop shot.

Murray claimed the tie-break in commanding fashion, capitalizing on Fritz’s visible frustration, and secured the set in 87 minutes with an almost dismissive forehand winner.

Nonetheless, Fritz quickly rallied, breaking early in the second set to level the match.

During the decider, Fritz withstood break points at 2-3, and Murray’s double fault presented the 25-year-old with three opportunities to break, with Fritz capitalizing on the second occasion when Murray’s backhand sailed long.

In a climactic final game, Murray brought forth three break-back points at 0-40, yet Fritz emerged unscathed. Fritz then saw two match points slip away before successfully converting the third.

Meanwhile, Dan Evans, who had experienced defeat in eight of his last nine matches prior to arriving in Washington, secured his second consecutive victory by defeating Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko with a 6-4, 6-3 outcome.

Due to rain, Evans will need to contest his quarter-final match later in the day, as both his and Murray’s matches were canceled on Thursday.

Fritz seals United Cup glory for USA

In the United Cup final, the United States dominated Italy with a commanding 3-0 lead thanks to Taylor Fritz’s game-winning goal.

In the preceding rounds of Sunday’s final in Sydney, Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe defeated Martina Trevisan and Lorenzo Musetti, setting the stage for Fritz to emerge as the winner.

While Pegula defeated Trevisan in straight sets, continuing her recent form that saw her upset Iga Swiatek in the USA’s victory over Poland in the semi-finals, Musetti injured herself and quit with a 6-2 deficit.

And Fritz, who defeated Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-6) after the Italian had recovered the first championship point but been unable to stop his opponent from capturing the second, made sure that his country won the first United Cup.

“It’s great. It’s amazing for the team to win this event. We came in with really high hopes, or at least I did, for the event,” said Fritz, who is ranked ninth in the world by the ATP after winning three titles in 2022.

“I was really happy to be in that position to clinch the match.”

There were jubilant scenes as the USA team rushed to celebrate with Fritz, though Tiafoe was perhaps slightly overzealous.

“Just the emotions when you win and everyone comes running at you, it’s amazing,” Fritz said. “I don’t know if you saw the replay but Frances basically headbutted me!”

  • ATP Finals: Fritz stuns Nadal in Turin opener

Taylor Fritz stunned Rafael Nadal on his ATP Finals debut on Sunday, producing a powerful display to beat the 22-time grand slam winner 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 in the duo’s group-stage opener.

The American put Nadal under pressure from the off in Turin, failing to give up a single break point as he dominated on his own serve to take the 36-year-old to a tie-break in the opening set.

Nadal allowed Fritz to seize the initiative with a double fault at the start of that tie-break, and the American grasped his opportunity by clinching the first set with a big forehand winner.

The top seed’s struggles continued into the second set as Fritz, moving well and dictating proceedings from the baseline, claimed the match’s first break four games in before going 5-1 up by repeating the trick in a back-and-forth sixth game.

Fritz then wrapped up the win with another dominant display of serving, clinching his second victory over Nadal and denting the Spaniard’s bid to win a title that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

Having been beaten by Tommy Paul at the Paris Masters and Frances Tiafoe at the US Open, Nadal has now suffered three consecutive defeats, and he must bounce back when he faces Felix Auger-Aliassime on Tuesday.
