Just don’t nominate me! – Pained Dreams FC coach warns SWAG over awards snub

Dreams FC head coach, Abdul-Karim Zito has thrown shots at the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) for consistently overlooking him in their awards scheme despite his heroics in the country for the past years.

The experienced gaffer has been very impressive in both national and club football and is arguably the best on the local scene for the past five years.

In late 2020, he led the Black Satellites to glory by winning the WAFU U-20 Championship in Benin, and then topped up with the Africa Youth Championship later in Mauritania.

Last season, Zito, once again defied all odds by taking down then reigning champions Hearts of Oak to clinch the FA Cup, which earned Dreams FC a slot in this season’s CAF Confederations Cup and very close to playing in the semi-final after their first leg win in Bamako last week against Stade Malien.

Speaking on Onua TV, the ex-Kotoko star took a huge swipe at SWAG’s awards scheme and feels they have always been disrespecting and overlooking his work and that sometimes leaves him in so much pain.

Anxiously, he added by saying he will never attend their events anymore: hence, they shouldn’t bother to nominate him again.

“Last year (2023), there was a media house that selected their top 5 coaches. I wasn’t even named among the top 5. Anytime SWAG nominate me, they overlook me for the award,” he fumed on Onua TV

“So I have taken the decision not to attend any SWAG event event if I am nominated. Because, I know I will be overlooked for others perhaps underserving.

“For 13 years, we had been in the wilderness until I won WAFU Zone B for Ghana and eventually won the CAF U20 AFCON. But they handed the individual award to a coach aspiring to win a league in Ghana. You’ve sparked sadness in me this morning talking about this, I feel pain!

“So I’ve decided that SWAG should not call me again regarding any of their event. There is no way I will go! They should not even nominate again!!

“Three times I’ve been there, three times I’ve been denied. Meanwhile, I am not there because I am Karim Zito, I am there because of my performance.

“So it’s true! I don’t know if it’s because of where I come from (referring to Dreams FC). But I am happy that gradually some of you (journalists) are understanding me and now seeing exactly what I am doing for Ghana football.”

Dreams FC will face the Malian giants on Sunday, April 7, in the return encounter of the CAF Confederations Cup at the Ohene Gyan Stadium.

  • “Dismayed” SWAG blast assault on the US-based Ghanaian journalist

“Dismayed” SWAG blast assault on the US-based Ghanaian journalist

Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has issued a strong condemnation of the assault on respected sports journalist Seidu Adamu by a member of the Black Stars’ security detail.

Seidu Adamu, a US-based journalist who covered Ghana’s friendly match against Mexico, was reportedly attacked by a member of the Black Stars’ security team at the team’s base in the United States of America.

In a statement released on Monday, October 16, 2023, SWAG provided a detailed account of the incident, labelling it as an unprovoked attack that occurred in the hotel lobby.

“The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has condemned an assault on Ghanaian sports journalist and a member of the association, Mr Seidu Adamu, by one of the security details of the Black Stars at the team’s camp in the United States of America (USA) prior to Ghana’s international friendly match with Mexico last Saturday.

SWAG is dismayed by the unprovoked assault on Mr. Adamu by the overzealous security guard, Aziz Yaro, in the team’s hotel lobby.

The statement further outlined how Kurt Okraku, the head of the GFA, and Adamu held discussions before the attack.

“Ironically, the reported incident occurred several minutes after the victim had exchanged pleasantries with leading officials of the Ghana Football Association, including the FA’s President, Mr Kurt Simeon-Okraku, and the General Secretary, Mr Prosper Harrison Addo, in the presence of other Ghanaian journalists.

SWAG also indicated that its president, Kwabena Yeboah, informed the FA leaders about what had happened and also demanded that the culprit be dealt with, including an apology to Adamu.

“Following the incident, SWAG President, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, promptly engaged with some members of the FA’s leadership to voice his strong protest against the official’s actions and seek an amicable resolution to the case. Mr Yeboah also took the opportunity to emphasise the need for the FA leadership to hold their errant official accountable, given that he had previously been implicated in similar acts of aggression towards journalists in the course of their duties.”

“While the attack on Mr Adamu is unacceptable, SWAG is encouraged that the GFA President and General Secretary took the matter seriously and directed Mr Aziz Yaro to issue a personal apology to Mr Adamu in full view of the officials at the team’s camp.”

In a social media post, Seidu Adamu revealed that he had reported the incident to the Barclay Down Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. He expressed his appreciation for the individuals who had contacted him following the incident, which had garnered condemnation from the majority of journalists.

“Thank you is not enough to all those who reached out to me after my unprovoked attack by the Security detailed to the Black Stars of Ghana. your calls, texts, and comments have been a strength to me.

“For me, it was a normal day to cover activities of the national team, but individually or collectively, the people around the Black Stars had a different idea.

“At this moment, I cannot say the attack on me was planned by the top hierarchy of the Ghana FA or a singular act of senseless Bravado from my attacker, whom I identified as AZIZ.

“Since the Leadership of the Ghana FA cannot guarantee my safety in and around the National Team, I have taken the hard decision to return to my base and not make the journey to Tennessee where the Black Stars are due to play the US Men’s National Team”, he said on social media.

  • Comparison of Kotoko to NPP and NDC by Amponsah has no empirical evidence – Maurice Quansah

The vice president of Sports Writers Association Ghana (SWAG), has revealed that Nana Yaw Amponsah‘s comparison of the Kumasi-based club to political parties in size has no data backing it.

Amponsah, after his official confirmation as CEO of Kotoko, boldly stated that the club is bigger than the two political parties in Ghana , NPP and NDC.

“You know you have to say the right things to the people. Kotoko is a big club with so much untapped potential. I have travelled across the continent. You go to Egypt, Algeria, Morrocco [they respect Kotoko],” Quansah told Joy FM.

“But, Kotoko have their problems so they have not been able to tap into that huge potential so a lot of things are speculation. Yes they [Nana Yaw Amponsah] talks about Kotoko being bigger than NPP or NDC but there are no scientific basis to it.”

  • SWAG is 52 years today

Fifty-two years in the life of anyone or an organization is significant enough as it defines the direction of the next 50 years after the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Despite the changing phases of the industry which has evolved around the traditional media to electronic and now the new media, our industry has thrived, providing the spring required to make the industry successful.

Organizations and associations such as ours, thrive on the commitment and dedication of its members and while some that began the journey with us have fallen off the way, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has remained true to the ideals of the founding fathers.

For the past five decades, batons have changed hands with generations after generations playing their roles steadily, helping to remain the conscience of the people and the voice of the sportsmen and sportswomen as well as a key stakeholder in the development and promotion of the industry.

As we chart the path leading us steadily towards 60 years, it is important to take stock of where we have come from and where we are heading towards and the need for us to also keep abreast of the fast-changing technology-driven the industry to remain relevant and protect our means of livelihood.

That has become even more important as unexpectedly, the world was hit by a crisis that took everyone unawares and which is threatening the very existence of people of which our industry has not been spared the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as all competitions both at the local and international levels, that fuel our jobs had to be cancelled, leaving many of us to draw deep and show our ingenuity and innovativeness.

Now more than ever, we will have to individually and collectively work towards safeguarding our work, adapting to the changing trends to ensure that we thrive no matter what and by so doing, give life to our association, because it can only be when we are.

As we commemorate this 52nd anniversary, it is important to yet again pay glowing tribute to our forebearers namely Joe Lartey, Willie Kwarteng, Oheneba Charles, Joe Aggrey, Ebo Quansah, Ackah Anthony and all that served SWAG in various capacities whose tireless efforts have helped build brands and images that have placed SWAG where it stands today one of the active members of our mother body, the Association of International Sports Press (AIPS) and it is heartwarming to note that members are also not just participating in the activities of the mother body, but excelling.

SWAG was inaugurated on August 3, 1968, with 12 members in Accra, has grown in membership to about 300 from the Ashanti, Bono, Eastern, Volta regions, and will soon inaugurate the Western and all the northern branches.

However, it will not be enough to have just the numbers thus it is important to emulate our forebearers whose commitment, dedication, and sense of duty has turned our association into one of the biggest umbrella bodies in the media industry in the country.

It is in order to pat ourselves on the shoulders for the good job done so far, but this is also a strong reminder that there is still a lot more to be achieved.
We can confidently say SWAG has grown bigger and better, become more relevant and building the capacity of the sports media in Ghana.

Though we are celebrating, we are also saddened by the news of the demise of Mr. George Painstil, the CEO of Presence Ghana Limited, who designed the logo that has given us our identity. He was for a very long time, a good friend of the association, and played key roles in keeping the prestigious SWAG Awards going.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family. May his soul and that of all sports stakeholders who have also departed rest in peace.

As we proudly commemorate our 52nd Anniversary we salute all sports journalists for the watchdog role played, their effort in influencing development and promotion but urge all our members and practitioners to imbibe a true sense of professionalism, objectivity, integrity, and strong principles, qualities our forbears bequeathed to us, and which defines our profession.
