Sports funding will be improved under my administration – Bawumia

Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans for a substantial overhaul in sports funding under his government to propel Ghana towards modern sports development.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, as he unveiled his vision for Ghana, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the failure of Ghanaian sports to realize its full potential. He pinpointed inadequate and unsustainable funding as a primary obstacle hindering progress in the sector.

“Sports is a multi-million dollar industry and an enabler for the youth,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“However, we have not realized our full sports potential, and we cannot maximize the full potential of Ghana sports, with the same funding module we have operated with since independence.”

In his vision for the development of sports in Ghana, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of implementing policies, tax adjustments, and other incentives aimed at fostering increased private and public investment in the sector.

As part of his plan, he intends to prioritize measures that will create an environment conducive to attracting more financial support, both from private entities and the government, ultimately aiming to facilitate the thriving growth of sports in the country.

“My government will therefore, prioritise the creation of incentives for corporate sponsorship as a sustainable module of financing sports development and promotion for our national teams, including football, athletics and boxing at all levels.”

“This will take the financial pressure off government, and also enable government to redirect more support to other sports disciplines.”

“Our government has constructed more sports facilities than any other government since 1992,” he said.

Giving a breakdown of the facilities, he noted that: “We have completed six new multipurpose sports stadia and four ongoing each in each of the ten old regions.”

Among the completed projects is the University of Ghana stadium in Legon, a state-of-the-art facility serving as a hub for sports activities and competitions.

  • 2026 World Cup is a do or die affair, don’t go joking around – Sports analyst to Black Stars

2026 World Cup is a do or die affair, don’t go joking around – Sports analyst to Black Stars

Sports journalist, Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, has issued a stern warning to Black Stars players, urging them to approach the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with utmost seriousness.

According to Adams, it is imperative for Ghana to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and the Black Stars cannot afford to deny Ghanaians the opportunity to participate in the global tournament.

Adams emphasized that qualifying for the 2026 World Cup holds significant importance for Ghanaians, as the event will be jointly hosted by the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada.

Following the Africa draw for the 2026 World Cup, Adams revealed that his phone has been inundated with numerous messages from people inquiring about how they can attend and experience the tournament firsthand.

“The World Cup which will be played in Mexico, the US and Canada, you can go there as a player and miss a penalty in the final, Ghanaians won’t do anything. We just want to qualify.

“People have planned their lives since 2018 when they started telling me, they want to go and watch the World Cup and come back. It means a lot to Ghanaians and some people have started saving to go and watch the World Cup,” Saddick Adams said.

He emphasized that the World Cup is not merely about watching matches, but rather a tournament that possesses the potential to transform the lives of families and provide opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

He said, “This World Cup is not for football fans it’s for the general interest of Ghanaian youth. People have become interested in this World Cup. So, if you are a player don’t joke with this World Cup. If you know that you are old and can’t play retire.”

“There are travel and tour companies who have made plans for this tournament. People have become interested in the World Cup and want to support the Black Stars to qualify. Canada wants 1000 volunteers from Africa so we can’t afford to miss this. At least if they get 20 people from Ghana, they can change the destiny of their families forever,” he stated.

“It’s not only about going to watch the matches but it’s a year of massive emancipation,” the Sports journalist said.

The Black Stars have a significant responsibility to secure Ghana’s qualification for the upcoming World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ghana has been drawn into Group I for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and will face challenges from teams such as Madagascar, Comoros, Central African Republic, Chad, and Mali.

Let’s use films to decolonise ourselves, stop mental slavery – Actress Akofa Edjeani

Veteran actress, Akofa Edjeani has highlighted the significant impact of film in decolonizing the African mentality.

According to her, film possesses the power to effectively challenge the persistent influences of slavery and colonialism.

“…and again, if the colonial masters used film as part of their weapons in colonizing us, I think that the honor is on us to do the same, by using film to decolonize ourselves, the mental slavery is still there… we are not independent, we are still begging for things and so many things.”

During an interview with the media on July 1, 2023, Akofa Edjeani emphasized the historical use of film by colonial powers to maintain control over their colonies.

She called upon African governments to prioritize and support their local film industries in response.

Edjeani expressed her belief that film has the power to bring about significant positive change and create numerous opportunities if it receives the necessary attention and investment.

She questioned the disparity in financial support between sports and the film industry, highlighting the potential for job creation and revenue generation in the latter.

According to Edjeani, the film industry possesses immense potential and could surpass the benefits derived from sports.

“Look at how much money we pump into sports and most times we go and, we don’t really win, …so if we can pump all that money into sports, the bonuses that they get…but the film can even do better so they should pay equal attention to film as well.

“Sports yes, but how many jobs can it create and how much money is it bringing compared to if you give the necessary push to film, so, there are so many reasons.

“The job creation and the fact that it is education as well. You know it is that medium that you can use to showcase your heritage… film is that powerful tool to create that identity, we use film to change policies, we use film to change perceptions.

“Film is a tool that can attract tourists, so when you are talking about tourism, the best tool is to showcase your tourist attraction, and your heritage in film, and that will make people flood to your country just to see those places,” she added.

Neymar to pay $3.3m for having lake in his mansion

Paris Saint-Germain football star, Neymar has been slapped with a hefty fine of 16 million reais (£2.6m/$3.3m) for constructing a lake at his mansion in Brazil.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 22, it came to light that the 31-year-old was being investigated by the local council in Mangaratiba, a coastal town near Rio de Janeiro, for various “irregularities” in a grand construction project.

Construction work was halted at that time, and Neymar is now facing the consequences for not adhering to planning regulations and carrying out building activities without the necessary permits.

    WHAT THEY SAID

The council issued a statement regarding the matter, stating that four fines have been imposed for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion.” It further highlighted that numerous infractions had been identified, including Neymar undertaking “environmentally regulated work without authorization,” as well as unauthorized land excavation, vegetation removal, and alteration of water sources without proper documentation.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neymar has faced criticism through social media posts, with his mansion site being cordoned off and construction work coming to a halt. Despite this, reports suggest that he has still visited the site and even hosted a party, but repercussions are now being enforced.

    WHAT NEXT?

Neymar, who has been out of action for PSG since February due to ankle surgery, acquired the property in question in 2016.

The mansion, boasting amenities like a spa and helipad, reportedly sits on a vast 10,000 square metre plot.

  • Football thrives on teamwork and collaboration – Asamoah Gyan advises Black Meteors

Football thrives on teamwork and collaboration – Asamoah Gyan advises Black Meteors

The legendary Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan, has shared valuable advice with the players of Ghana Black Meteors on how to excel in their football careers.

He emphasized the importance of being team players and explained that their ability to contribute to the team’s efforts when not in possession of the ball is vital for success.

Gyan believes that football is not solely about individual talent but requires collective teamwork.

Expressing his disappointment, Gyan acknowledged the potential of the Ghana Black Meteors to progress further in the tournament.

However, he attributed their early elimination to the presence of pride and selfishness among certain players.

These character traits, according to the iconic Ghanaian skipper, are detrimental to modern football and hinder the team’s overall performance.

Gyan urged the players to change their mindset and embrace a more selfless approach to the game.

He stressed the significance of not only showcasing individual skills but also actively defending and supporting the team when not in possession of the ball.

Gyan highlighted the evolving nature of football and emphasized that success comes from collective efforts rather than individual brilliance.

The veteran footballer’s advice serves as a reminder to aspiring players that true greatness in football is achieved through teamwork and selflessness.

Gyan’s words of wisdom carry weight, given his extensive experience and success in the sport. His message resonates with the need for players to prioritize the interests of the team above personal glory, as this is the key to unlocking their full potential and achieving remarkable results in modern football.

He said, “What I saw in this Black meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame? SHM.”

  • Hakimi’s wife breaks silence, says ‘I needed time to digest this shock’

Hakimi’s wife breaks silence, says ‘I needed time to digest this shock’

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi’s ex-wife, Hiba Abouk, has said that she needed time to recover from the shock.

Hiba Abouk, requested half of her ex-husband’s assets in a divorce petition.

However, the court informed her that everything was registered in his mother’s name, her “Millionaire”, therefore Achraf Hakimi had no property.

In an interview with ELLE, Abouk said, “I am fine. There are days when it is like this, and others in which you’ve to know how to take blows and make decisions, sometimes complicated, and get used to new situations.

Who would’ve imagined that in addition to facing the usual pain that a separation entails and accepting the grief that the failure of a family project to which I had given myself body and soul entails, I would’ve to face this ignominy. I needed time to digest this shock.”

Abouk continued, “When you separate, you restructure your life, but it’s not anything special either: you’ve to take iron out of the matter. It’s true that, with two children, it is emotionally complicated, but I’m not the first and I will not be the last. The important thing is that I have the peace of mind of having tried and having done everything I had to do.

There are decisions that cannot be made overnight. For me, it’s a premise not to rush in moments of crisis.”

However, there have been reports that the settlement could be challenging, as Hakimi has reportedly registered a significant portion of his wealth in his mother’s name.

Abouk and Hakimi have two children together, Amín, 3, and Naim, 1. The couple married in 2020, two years after meeting in 2018.

The situation is undoubtedly a difficult one for Abouk and her children, and it remains to be seen how the divorce settlement will ultimately be resolved.

However, Abouk’s calm and measured response is admirable, and it’s clear that she is prioritizing her emotional wellbeing and that of her children during this challenging time.

  • History of Pro Wrestling: How the sport came to be

History of Pro Wrestling: How the sport came to be

Wrestling has existed for over a century and was popularized in the United States—it actually began in the late 1800s, right after the Civil War. Wrestling was a sort of enjoyment that could be seen at carnivals and other traveling performances during the difficult postwar years. The majority were collegiate wrestlers seeking a fast buck. Pro wrestling would eventually develop into a highly popular social function. Soon enough, the sport became as popular as boxing, and we get to entertain ourselves with matches on 22Bet.

    The Beginnings

The primary event of wrestling matches were Frank Gotch and Martin Burns, and things were going great until they started to quickly deteriorate. It wouldn’t be long before news got out that wrestling was in trouble. While it was never proved, it was commonly assumed that the boxing commission disseminated the news at the time. Wrestling was becoming more popular at the time and drew a larger crowd than boxing.

Wrestling would be in jeopardy, whether it was because of sour apples or because the spectators had smartened up. Fans were abandoning the once-popular attraction in droves, and things were only about to get worse with Gotch’s retirement. Things were looking bleak for our beloved sport, with no public face to promote it and a sharp drop in attendance. However, just as a dying tree wilts and dies, its seeds are typically dispersed and new trees are produced.

Billy Sandow, Ed Lewis, and Toots Mondt would be the new faces that would save professional wrestling. Fans went on to call them the Goldust Trio. They would permanently change the way the public saw wrestling. Not only that, but they’d be the first to put time limitations and DQs in place. Realizing that wrestling was a job, the trio began to use dishonest techniques even when the referee was not looking. Nevertheless, these are only a handful of the modifications that might be made to wrestling. Signature holds and tag team wrestling would also be introduced by the three to the sports world.

However, the commencement of promotions was their most original and significant achievement. Unlike in the past, when events were made up of hired talent from all around, these three opted to employ and retain a core of wrestlers for a long time. This risky strategy would reward off in a variety of ways. The fans would be more familiar with the brand if the wrestlers stayed the same. It would also enable them to establish a new fan base by promoting the same wrestlers everywhere they went.

The ability to perform angles and stories was perhaps the most important factor in maintaining the same wrestlers. They were able to keep feuds running for lengthy periods of time without having to send their fighters to other areas to wrestle. For over a decade, this formula would maintain them at the peak of the wrestling world. They are, nevertheless, frequently replicated, as are most success tales. For the three, the outcome would be the same.

Local promotions began to appear all throughout the country. The Goldust Trio was quickly feeling the strain of their newfound rivalry. They were now up against local promotions around the country. Their reign of terror would come to an end in the late 1920s. But it wasn’t the competitors that became their biggest stumbling block. Their reign as wrestling monarchs ended at the hands of Stanislaus Zybyzko.

    The Transition

What was meant to be a simple title drop went horribly downhill. Wayne Munn, a newcomer, was slated to receive the belt from Zybysko. In an effort to keep, Zybysco would go against the odds and overcome Munn. To add insult to injury, out of spite, Zybysko would return a short time later and hand the title to Lewis’ rival, Joe Stecher. By repeatedly evading Lewis, Stecher would only make it tougher.

This whole ordeal would inflict so much harm that the belt would be useless by the time they got it back. It would eventually lead to the three’s supremacy in the wrestling business crumbling. The world of pro wrestling was significantly different in the 1930s and 1940s. Wrestling at carnies and farms was a thing of the past. We were about to enter a new business, the realm of wrestling.

Wrestling producers were generating more money as the sport grew in popularity. The term “Raiding Talent” was coined during this time period. As the industry expanded, the promoters began to see dollar signs. They would frequently destroy and plunder other local marketers of their talent in order to keep ahead of their competitors. As you can expect, this resulted in a number of heated battles between businesses.

To make matters worse, many names were losing their credibility. The reason for this is that many champion wrestlers would move to different promotions. Even the most opportunistic promoters recognized that it was a huge issue. The NWA was created in 1948 when all of the local promoters signed a vague pact.

It’s also worth mentioning that some wrestling purists think the NWA began in the late 1920s. Since the NWA was founded in the late 1920s, there is some validity to this. It’s also incorrect because the NWA attempted to unite local promoters in 1929.

  • Nike terminates endorsement deal with Kyrie Irving

As a result of Nike and Kyrie Irving’s split, the Brooklyn Nets player is now a shoe free agency. Shams Charania, an NBA insider, broke the news of the dismissal for the first time on Twitter on Monday.

When reached for comment by Complex on the matter, a Nike spokesperson confirms that “Kyrie Irving is no longer a Nike athlete.”

The termination of the deal with the Nets star guard comes after the brand announced last month it would be suspending its partnership with Irving and axing the release of his Kyrie 8 signature shoe after he shared a link to an antisemitic film on Instagram and refused to denounce antisemitic beliefs in the immediate press conferences that followed. Irving was also suspended by the Nets for eight games but has since been reinstated after he apologized for sharing a link to the film on social media.

Irving and Nike’s relationship began to sour last year when he publicly called his unreleased Kyrie Infinity sneaker “trash” in an Instagram comment. Shortly after, it was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne that Nike would not be renewing Irving’s endorsement deal following the 2022–23 season and that the Kyrie 8 would be his last sneaker release with the brand.

Irving first inked an endorsement deal with the Swoosh back in 2011, which has resulted in the release of seven official signature models as well as several takedown sneakers.

  • Brandon Thomas-Asante scores in West Brom’s win against Stoke

Brandon Thomas-Asante scored in West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 win against Stoke City at The Hawthorns on Saturday. His goal helped his club complete a hat-trick of victories under new manager Carlos Corberan.

West Brom made a flying start, almost taking the lead within the first minute when John Swift’s effort was cleared off the line.

In fact, Albion dominated nearly the entire first half. On the half-hour mark, Thomas-Asante went close with a header before Matty Phillips saw one deflected beyond, with Bartley also hitting the crossbar shortly after.

Fortunately, they were eventually rewarded for their continuous pressure. A superb John Swift cross was expertly driven home by Bartley six minutes before halftime.

A Stoke defender diverted Darnell Furlong‘s cross into the air in the 51st minute, allowing Thomas-Asante to acrobatically volley past Jack Bonham and deservedly increase Albion’s advantage.

In his debut season with West Brom Albion, the 23-year-old Ghanaian attacker scored three goals in 12 appearances in the English Championship.

  • Strengthening party-gov’t relations: Sports Minister visits NPP headquarters

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has paid a visit to the National Headquarters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as part of efforts to strengthen the link between the government and the party.

It also forms part of the initiatives to bridge the gap between government appointees and party officers in the party’s quest to mobilise its rank and file for a third consecutive electoral victory in 2024 and to “break the eight” as the popular mantra goes.

During the interactions, Mr Ussif said nearly 75 per cent of the country’s 31.8 million population fell within the youthful bracket, which fuelled government’s commitment to implement several youth-centred interventions.

    Interventions

He mentioned that interventions such as YouStart, Green Ghana, various modules of the Youth Employment Agency and the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) had led to employment, training, capacity building and the provision of financial support to the country’s youth.

The Youth and Sports Minister, therefore, encouraged the party to liaise with the appropriate government officials and agencies supervising these youth- centred interventions to ensure their success.

Mr Ussif further encouraged the party to emulate the youth structures of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress which, he said, had been crucial to the party’s long stay in power.

    Way forward

The General Secretary of the Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, who received the minister on behalf of party headquarters, reiterated the point that this initiative of holding regular party-government meetings would be replicated across the country, particularly in the regional capitals.

That, he said, was to provide a platform for government appointees, particularly ministers of state and chief executive officers (CEOs) to interact with party officers and grassroots.

As part of this initiative, the party headquarters have witnessed visits over the previous weeks by some government appointees, including the CEO of Ghana Water Company Limited, Dr Clifford Braimah, and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor.

Other appointees are expected to have their turn in the coming weeks.

  • Good news for football fans: C.K Gyamfi left an autobiography

When I became editor of the Ghana edition of Drum magazine in the early 1960s, I used to double as the paper’s main Sports Writer.

My pen name a tongue-in-cheek nomenclature if ever one existed was Kokooase Adowa [Duiker Found Under The Cocoa Trees]! I am sure this had something to do, subliminally, with the fact that I had long, thin legs as a child, and that could run so fast on errands for my elders that one of them renamed me “Motor!”

Anyway, in the guise of Kokooase Adowa, I once visited the Black Star camp when the national team was preparing for a match with another African country. As soon as the team’s glamorous right-winger, the late, inimitable Baba Yara, saw me, he launched an attack on me for something I had written about him in Drum:

“You said in your report that I should use my left foot every now and then, but that’s precisely what I did in that match! Maybe you didn’t watch the match closely?” Yara charged.

The Black Star player-coach, Charles Kumi Gyamfi, intervened at once to forestall an argument between myself and his most precious possession.

“What he was implying, in saying that, “Gyamfi explained, “is that he knows you’re an ambidextrous forward, but that your natural instinct is to use your right foot more often than your left. You, of course, can’t notice that you’re doing that, because your whole mind would be on the game as a whole and not on individual moves you might or might not make.

“There are some criticisms that are made of us as players from the point of view of an admirer, not that of a critic. You have to read an article carefully before you can detect such nuances. For instance, in that same article that you’re cheesed up, about, he remarked that a ball I had shot at goal would have earned us a goal had I passed it to someone else better placed than me!

“Now that’s a serious criticism to be levelled against a player-coach, who, after all, is in charge of strategy and should set a good example to his players. But he added that he wondered why “Gyamfi of all people” should have done that! In saying that, he was revealing something about me, which was that he expected me, with all my intelligence, to make an impeccable decision about what to do whenever I got the ball! You can’t call that a ‘criticism’!”

My head swelled when Gyamfi defended me like that. But Baba Yara, who had a very sharp wit, immediately retorted that “What he did is like when a Fulani man wants to punish you: he will hit you, but then immediately bend down to breathe air onto the stricken spot so that the blow wouldn’t hurt you too much!”

Everyone laughed. And the tension which was about to arise between me and the players was instantly dissolved. Gyamfi, as the players’ protector, had defused a situation that could have ignited into hostility by the players towards me.

This, of course, would have been reflected in my next report on the team’s performance. Yet football players long for adulation, and hostile criticism against them gets to them all too easily.

The intercession by Charles Kumi Gyamfi in the threatening altercation between me and Baba Yara revealed to me that Gyamfi wasn’t just simply a very good player who had risen to become the national coach, but also, that he was a first-class psychologist and an expert manager of men’s egos.

He had saved me from the tongue of Baba Yara, but at the same time, he had subtly taught Yara something about the delicate art of cultivating diplomatic relations between footballers and sportswriters.

Indeed, so broad was Gyamfi’s intellect that his coaching method was total he took charge of the players’ sensitivities, whilst, at the same time, exacting the best physical and mental performance from them. In other words, he was a coach whose qualities comprised both intellectual depth and technical prowess a ‘Mourinho’ before his time; an Alex Ferguson who didn’t allow the results of his man-management skills to be scuppered by a prickly personality.

I recall these things about “C.K” because I am in the very happy position of having been given a sneak preview of the Autobiography Gyamfi left behind when he passed on 2 September 2015. Apparently, C.K had been painfully putting down his recollections of his long, illustrious football career, during his retirement and even when was enfeebled by illness. He was fortunate enough to befriend by a very young student called Fiifi Anaman, who, as it happened, was a “football enthusiast.”

Despite the half a century of years that constituted the age-gap between the two men, they developed a rapport which enabled “C K” to entrust what he had written to Fiifi, to enable him to “ghostwrite” the fantastic Autobiography that is about to be published by that indefatigable and shrewd Publisher, Fred Labi, proprietor of Digibooks.

Entitled “Black Star: The Autobiography of C K Gyamfi”, the book is certain to become an instant best-seller when it appears in our bookshops in a few week’s time hopefully, before the 5th anniversary of Gyamfi’s passing.

It makes for enchanting reading. We learn all about Gyamfi’s beginnings as a footballer in junior and senior school. His crawl from club to club until he arrived at Asante Kotoko, to attain national stardom alongside James Agyei, Kwaku Duah, and others; how he got disaffected with Kotoko but instead of merely leaving the club, formed his own team to contest dangerously for local popularity, against Kotoko, in Kotoko’s own home-base Kumase.

And so on and so forth until he became the national coach of the Black Stars and won the African Cup of Nation three times

    for Ghana!

I can’t wait for a copy of the printed book. Can you?

Not if you are a real football fan say I!
