Chinese officials welcomed by Western leaders to Ukraine peace talks

Chinese representatives attending a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, last weekend gave European diplomats some little solace. The goal of the gathering was to settle the Ukrainian issue peacefully.

Although Beijing maintained its posture of neutrality, some sources contend that Beijing’s mere attendance at a meeting to which Russia claims it was not invited sent a signal to the world that it was unwilling to publicly align with Russia against the West.

Putin, the president of Russia, may not have gotten everything he wanted, but even a little success in the zero-sum game of diplomacy is cause for celebration.

A senior EU source told CNN, “We never anticipated China to go totally to the Western stance, but sponsoring this conference will be a significant disappointment to Russia.

“In our opinion, China is actively interacting with the West, speaking with the Ukrainians, and rebuffing Russia. The official said, “We truly appreciate that. This opinion is shared by other European sources.

Even if China’s involvement in world affairs may be a setback for Russia, Western allies continue to be wary of China, in part because the two nations continue to have close economic, diplomatic, and security relations.

Beijing hasn’t given the impression that it is cutting back on relations with Russia, despite the delegation’s attendance in Jeddah. A day after the Jeddah negotiations ended, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, called his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and reiterated Beijing’s “impartiality” in the crisis.

Throughout the conflict, the military of the two nations have continued to train together. Last week, a naval patrol was conducted off the coast of Alaska. According to Russian media, Putin will also travel to China in October after accepting Xi Jinping’s invitation in March.

The same senior EU source recognised that Beijing has few reasons to want to end the war outside of its relationships with trading partners. “From their viewpoint, the US, its main opponent, is preoccupied, and Russia has grown even more into a subordinate partner. The only drawback is how it influences others’ perceptions of China.

It’s no secret that China and Europe have a strained relationship. That, according to officials, is problematic for Chinese leaders who see European countries as targets in Beijing and Washington’s struggle for global supremacy.

It’s also no secret that China’s tight ties to Russia, along with Beijing’s unwillingness to denounce Moscow’s full-scale invasion, have unnerved a number of European nations, particularly those that are geographically close to Russia, and caused them to reevaluate how Europe should interact with China.

According to a European security source, “China’s main goal is to maintain ambiguity in the European position so they don’t go as far as the US would like.” “Retaining economic ties makes it more difficult for hawks to distance Europe from China. Jeddah may have been a response to Russia’s efforts to bring Europe closer to the US. China will feel compelled to get involved in Ukraine again.

Policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations Alicja Bachulska concurs:

“China’s recent actions unquestionably involve PR damage management. China is waiting to act, and it will do so as long as it can. Attending this kind of meeting fits in very well with this plan, especially if Russia is not present. For everyone who still has the foolish belief that China can make a difference, it makes for fantastic headlines.

In short, the EU’s most challenging but crucial international relationship hasn’t changed in Brussels as a result of China coming to the table.

According to several officials who spoke with CNN, the relationship with China is currently in a state of stasis as it tries to strike a balance between what Europe needs and what Europe wants.

Despite its dependence on China, Europe still imports far more from that country than it does. The trade imbalance increased significantly from 2020 to 2022, reaching €396 billion ($436 billion).

This has occurred despite Europe’s reluctance to ratify official treaties and agreements. Because China has penalised members of the European Parliament for criticising China’s human rights record, the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, which was negotiated for nearly ten years before a basic agreement was reached, is on hold.

The official position of Europe towards China has likewise altered, and as of 2019, it officially recognises Beijing as a “systemic rival.” In an effort to counter China’s hegemony in Eurasia, Brussels has launched distinct strategic actions since 2019.

According to a CNN interview with an EU official, Brussels has not yet “solidified” its stance on China. “A Jeddah-style declaration is nice, but it won’t change the rules of the game. Since the beginning of the war, we have wished for China to act in this manner.

The official emphasised that even positive actions like these are eventually judged in light of other actions like Beijing’s regard for human rights, its aggressive posture towards Taiwan, and its purported involvement in corporate espionage. In that sense, Brussels’ varied complaints against Beijing can be seen through yet another lens when it comes to China’s actions or inactivity in regard to Ukraine.

It’s this conflicting reality—China is needed by Europe for some things, but it’s also seen as a security danger and a bad actor on the international stage—that makes things so difficult.

In fact, despite the tense nature of their relations, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, as well as the leaders of France, Germany, and Spain, have all recently visited China.

In areas like climate change, setting the pace for emerging technology, and establishing a free-standing foreign policy, Brussels has set itself lofty goals. The EU chose a third option in which the US would continue to be its principal ally but closer commercial connections with China were established because it did not want to choose between the two major powers of the East and West.

In doing so, it intended to persuade China to adopt European viewpoints on a variety of issues, including human rights, the rules-based international order, and climate change.

European leaders in 2023 are aware of China’s significant security risks and the dangers of becoming unduly dependent on China. But they also acknowledge that they could need China’s assistance to accomplish their grandiose goals.

Future society will be heavily dependent on items like inexpensive electric cars, solar panels, and steel for wind farms. Sam Goodman from the China Strategic Risks Institute argues that China can create these items at a low cost and already has a good start in terms of being a significant supplier for the global market.

Additionally, Goodman points out that given the current economic situation for Europe, smaller governments may be more susceptible to the allure of Chinese funding for significant infrastructure projects.

“China has historically been keen to buy up or heavily invest in European infrastructure projects, be they nuclear power stations, roads, or water companies,” he said. “European nations have recently become less enthusiastic about this, but it might be tempting for countries with weak economies to accept some money as a temporary fix.”

Wide-ranging security issues have been raised by officials on numerous occasions. Senior EU security officials told CNN that China continues to be the main source of cyberattacks, with the majority of them concentrating on business espionage.

Others say that Europe doesn’t want to end up in the same position it did with Russia in terms of relying on one provider so heavily for energy or other resources, especially in the event China becomes even more forceful in its own backyard and goes from systemic rival to full-blown international pariah, as seen with Putin’s Moscow.

Between these fears over security, Europe’s international ambitions and China’s global ambitions, it might seem hard to pin down exactly what either side want from their future relationship.

“I don’t believe China has given up on Europe just yet. According to Charles Parton, a former first counsellor to the EU delegation in Beijing, “it hopes it can still influence the decisions of enough European nations to prevent America from fleeing in the struggle over new technology.”

“They have recently lost on things like Huawei and will be desperate to remain competitive on semiconductors, AI, and all the things that will matter a lot in the coming years,” the author continues.

More challenges arise for Europe. According to officials, Brussels is steadfast in defying Washington’s demands to entirely cut off relations with China while treading the fine line of the US remaining its closest partner. They assert that it will collaborate with China on some of the most significant global challenges at the same time as aiming to achieve its global goals without becoming unduly dependent on China.

It’s an ambitious strategy, but one that mostly leaves its own destiny up to chance. Or, at the very least, in the control of a nation that has seen its standing as a partner with Europe considerably decline over the past ten years.

Chris Hughton speaks on Partey’s Saudi links

Head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton, has made it clear that a potential move by Thomas Partey to the Saudi Arabia Pro League will not affect the player’s chances of being called up to the national team.

There have been speculations about Partey’s possible move to Saudi Arabia, although discussions about the transfer have recently quietened down.

According to Hughton, his primary criteria for selecting players for the Black Stars is based on their regular playing time, with the league they are competing in having minimal influence on his decision-making process.

“Thomas is an experienced player, he had a wonderful season at Arsenal. Firstly, is about playing. Players who are playing regularly so they can keep their level of fitness.

:And of course, is about the league that they are playing in and if you look at the Blck Stars they would be scattered around.

“Some play in the best league, and some also play in leagues that is not on the level but it’s about playing and playing regularly,” he told TalkSports.

At the moment, Thomas Partey is likely to continue at Arsenal despite the signing of Declan Rice who the Gunners deem as replacement for the Ghanaian.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, in a previous interview, confirmed that Partey is ‘super important’ to the team.

“I expect Thomas Partey to stay here. Every time I spoke to him and had a conversation with him he’s ready to stay with us. For me, there’s nothing there’s at all.”

Saint-Maximin confirms Newcastle departure from as he prepares for a move to Saudi Arabia

Allan Saint-Maximin has announced his departure from Newcastle as he prepares for a likely move to the wealthy Saudi Pro League.

The French winger, who has been strongly linked with a £30 million ($38.5 million) transfer to Al-Ahli, bid farewell to the Premier League club in a heartfelt message posted on his Instagram account.

In his message, he expressed his love for the club and reminisced about their journey from battling relegation to achieving an impressive fourth-placed finish last season.

Under the management of Eddie Howe, Newcastle has been making significant investments since the club’s takeover by Saudi-backed owners in October 2021.

Saint-Maximin, 26, said: “I fell for Newcastle, I had great opportunities to leave during dark days, but that was too late. I was already in love, I wanted, I needed, I had to stay for helping my team to save the club from Premier League relegation because it meant the world for me.

“Of course during those dark days some may have had their doubts, but I always believed in this club and look where we are today, it’s just so beautiful.

I’m leaving Newcastle as it should always have been and that’s my greatest trophy because I was a part of it.”
Saint-Maximin has made 124 appearances for the club and scored 13 goals since joining from Nice in 2019.

A growing list of high-profile players have moved to Saudi Arabia.

Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy have already signed for Al-Ahli, while Karim Benzema, Jordan Henderson and N’Golo Kante have also joined Pro League clubs in recent weeks.

  • Ronaldo’s move to Saudi was for money not the love of football – Odion Ighalo alleges

Ronaldo’s move to Saudi was for money not the love of football – Odion Ighalo alleges

Odion Ighalo has asserted that Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia was primarily motivated by financial considerations rather than a genuine passion for the game.

Ighalo, who was the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League last season while playing for Al-Hilal, revealed that he made the move to the country for monetary reasons and suggests that Ronaldo is doing the same after joining Al-Nassr, along with Benzema.

Ighalo, 34, said to OmaSportsTV: “When you are young, yes, you play for passion. Back then, you don’t care about money.

“But at my age, I am in the final stretch of my career, I don’t know if it will be one, two years or when God will tell it to stop.

“I know it won’t be more than three years. I’ve played for passion all my life, now it’s for money. I’m not one of those players who come and say: ‘I play for passion’. Brother, it’s money. At the end of the day, it’s money.

“Is Ronaldo still playing out of passion? Ronaldo has earned 100 times more than I have in my entire life and yet he went to Saudi Arabia. Did he do that out of passion? It’s for money, bro.”

A clutch of players have moved to Saudi Arabia this summer, with the latest being Jordan Henderson.

The likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, and Roberto Firmino have also moved to the country in this transfer window.

The Saudi Pro League influx appears to show no signs of slowing down, with Fabinho linked with a move to Ittihad.

Bechem Utd’s Hafiz Konkoni claims he has received offers from Arab and European clubs

Striker for Bechem United, Wontah Konkoni, has garnered significant attention from clubs in Europe, Egypt, and Morocco, all competing for the opportunity to sign him.

Ghanaian football giants, Hearts of Oak, are also keen on acquiring the 24-year-old’s services as they aim to improve their goal-scoring performance in the upcoming season.

Having showcased his talents in the local league, Konkoni has firmly established himself as one of the top strikers in the region, demonstrating his readiness to take on new challenges.

During the last season, he impressively scored 15 goals, narrowly missing the club’s top scorer title, held by Abednego Tetteh, who outperformed him by just three goals.

Konkoni received a call-up to Ghana’s senior national team—an honor he earned under the watchful eye of head coach Chris Hughton.

In an interview with Ghanasportspage.com, the forward confirmed that clubs from Europe and Arab nations, including Egypt and Morocco, have expressed keen interest in securing his services.

“I have received offers from other countries including Europe and Arab. Clubs from Egypt and Morocco are also showing interest.”

Messi chose love for football over money – Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov speaks on Leo’s Saudi offers

Barcelona legend, Hristo Stoichkov, has revealed that Lionel Messi turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal, which would have earned him £400 million ($505 million).

Instead, Messi chose to sign for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). Stoichkov commended Messi for prioritizing his love for the game over chasing money in the Middle East.

Stoichkov emphasized that during their playing days, they didn’t play for financial gains but rather for the love of football.

“This shows greatness. It didn’t matter to me to know my salary or the bonuses, for me it was more important to play and that people value me.

“The agents take care of the other things. Messi comes to compete and play and he doesn’t care about money because he loves football.”

Messi has yet to make his debut for Inter Miami; he was scheduled to play against Cruz Azul later this month, but the club’s co-owner David Beckham has claimed that it may be pushed back as manager Tata Martino assesses the Argentine’s fitness.

Messi will hope to make his debut soon enough, with Inter Miami in desperate need of his magic after failing to win any of their last 11 MLS matches.

  •  Bruno Fernandes snubs multiple Saudi offers

Bruno Fernandes has reportedly rejected several offers from the Saudi Pro League in order to remain at Manchester United, where he is likely to be named the club captain.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese international has made it clear that he has no intentions of leaving Old Trafford this summer, despite receiving multiple approaches from the Gulf state in June.

While the specific clubs making the proposals remain undisclosed, it would require a substantial financial offer to entice a player of Fernandes’ caliber.

Rather than joining the trend of high-profile players moving to the Middle East, Fernandes has expressed his desire to continue his career at Manchester United.

Furthermore, it is expected that he will take over the captaincy from Harry Maguire, who was recently relieved of his duties as captain.

Fernandes has returned to United for pre-season training after an extended break, and he will doubtless continue to be a key cog for the club as they continue their progress under Erik ten Hag.

Tamale welcomes 1st batch of 433 pilgrims

The first group of 433 Hajj pilgrims, who were flown directly from Tamale International Airport to Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform this year’s Hajj, have safely returned.

At 4:45 a.m. Monday, the Saudi Commercial Airline’s Jumbo Jet Airbus 33-900 touched down at Tamale International Airport (TIA).

Family members thronged the Tamale International Airport (TIA) to greet their loved ones with joy and sung Allah’s praises to them.

There were greeted with fanfare, amid loud shouts of “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “Allah is great”.

To welcome back the Haj pilgrims, family members dressed in white to symbolize happiness.

This year, around 2,000 prospective pilgrims were airlifted from Tamale International Airport to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to perform Islamic spiritual duties.

In a press conference following the arrival of the Haj pilgrims, the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Shani Shaibu, praised the pilgrims for their good behavior while in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He claimed that wherever Ghanaian Muslims found themselves, they were always of good character.

“I’m impressed about the reports I received whilst you were staying in the holy land for the spiritual activities,” Alhaji Shaibu added.

He advised every Muslim living outside the borders of our country to be of good character at all times.

He also praised the local organisers of the Haj Board in Tamale for their efforts and asked them to keep up the good job.

The Minister, on the other hand, thanked Allah for their safe arrival and praised the Haj Board and pilgrims for their good behavior throughout the spiritual activities in the holy land.

Pogba may part ways with Juventus for Al Ahli soon

Paul Pogba has received a three-year, €100 million contract offer from the Saudi Arabian team Al Ahli, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 30-year-old French midfielder will join Edouard Mendy, a former Chelsea custodian, and Roberto Firmino, a former Liverpool striker, on Al Ahli’s roster.

The Saudi Pro League team, which has already spoken the terms of the deal to Pogba’s agent Rafaela Pimenta, will want to assess his physical condition before offering him the contract.

The revelation comes following an injury-plagued campaign in which Pogba, who Juventus re-signed from Manchester United as a free agent last summer, managed just 161 minutes from 10 appearances across all competitions.

There are also questions about whether or not Pogba wants to leave the Serie A side.

If Pogba tells Juventus that he wants to move, the Bianconeri will not block the deal and will look to bring in a €10m transfer fee.

Fellow midfielders Denis Zakaria, Weston McKennie and Arthur Melo could also leave Juventus, who are looking at Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, Barcelona’s Franck Kessie, Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo de Paul and Strasbourg’s Habib Diarra as possible candidates to strengthen that area.

No need to rush Partey, allow him choose – Kasim Adams on Partey’s Saudi links

Player of the Black Stars, Kasim Nuhu Adams, wants Thomas Partey to use his right to free agency during the summer transfer window.

There have been rumours that Thomas Partey will leave Arsenal. In order to add additional players for the upcoming season, the North London club is reportedly prepared to offload the Ghanaian.

Partey has received a $10 million annual offer from various Saudi clubs, but it seems the player is not interested, despite Juventus of Italy reportedly being linked to the player.

Many supporters of the game have urged the 30-year-old to put money first due to the huge offer from Saudi Arabia.

However, Kassim Nuhu Adams believes it is crucial to allow Partey to make his own decisions without feeling rushed into a choice he may later regret.

Speaking in an interview on Max24Gh, the former FC Basel player said, “Sometimes you cannot advise someone to choose a club because if something happens there, he will blame you.”

“We will stay back and let him choose if he wants to stay at Arsenal for me it’s a club.

They are going to play in the Champions League, they have a lot of competitions to play even though they have signed players. One player cannot play all the games.

“For me, I believe in him, when he tunes his mind that he wants to play and train he will even though if they have other players there. We don’t have to rush him that much to choose a club that he does not feel like choosing,” he stated.

Boost immune system for Hajj, Umrah – Medical practitioner

A physician at the University of Ghana Hospital, Dr. Abdul-Rahaman Al-Hassan, has counseled travelers planning to take part in the Hajj and Umrah in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to strengthen their immune systems prior to departure.

He recommends consuming vitamin C-rich foods, maintaining stable chronic conditions, adhering to routine medication, and ensuring proper hydration.

Dr. Al-Hassan emphasizes the importance of personal hygiene, cough etiquette, and avoiding cold drinks to prevent the spread of the “Hajj cough.”

This cough is commonly experienced by pilgrims due to the crowded conditions during the pilgrimage, which saw over two million people from around the world this year after COVID-19-related restrictions.

Medical brigades and country-level medical teams were deployed by Saudi authorities to address common ailments among pilgrims in hotels and camps.

Dr. Al-Hassan also notes that pilgrims are at risk of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and the coughs experienced may be symptoms of the disease.

“It is among the symptoms of MERS, especially at crowded place with poor ventilation. This worsens the symptoms of irritable cough and irritative sore-throat.
This is zoonotic infection transmissible from animal (camel) to people,” he said.

Dr. Al-Hassan highlighted that, similar to the coronavirus family, the transmission of diseases during Hajj and Umrah occurs through respiratory droplets.

“So individuals with MERS who sneeze and cough without appropriate etiquette, put others at risk.

“While some maybe asymptomatic, others may show mild to moderate symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. This can be complicated by pneumonia and gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea,” Dr Al-Hassan said.

Rio Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher engages in heated social media exchange over players move to Saudi

Two former English football stars, Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher, have engaged in a fiery social media exchange concerning the increasing involvement of Saudi Arabia in football transfers.

In a video shared online, Ferdinand accused Carragher of hypocrisy regarding Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in football.

The Middle-Eastern country’s investments in football clubs and players have become a significant topic of discussion within the football community.

Ferdinand specifically questioned Carragher’s silence regarding the transfer of their former teammate Steven Gerrard, who was recently appointed as the new manager of Al-Ettifaq on July 3rd.

The argument between the two former players highlights the ongoing debate surrounding Saudi Arabia’s influence on the football industry.

“Jamie. Jamie Carragher. Where are you, man? I heard a lot of talk, a lot of negativity about Saudi. Oh, Bernardo Silva, I can’t believe it. It’s a disgrace, it needs investigating, this league, et cetera. Steven Gerrard’s gone.

“You used to carry his boots and his bag at Anfield to games. Your boy’s gone over there and I’ve not heard a peep out of you. I’ve not heard how disappointed you are. I want to see him say “I can’t believe Stevie’s gone there”.

‘I’m actually buzzing for any of the guys that have gone out to Saudi. Because it’s Saudi, people are going mad, but all these other countries and leagues over the years have done exactly the same thing”, Ferdinand said in the video.

Carragher also took turns to hit back at the comments and cited Ferdinand’s questions silence over Qatar during the 2022 World Cup.

“Never criticized Silva, [Karim] Benzema, [Ruben] Neves or SG, I don’t like Saudi trying to buy football like they have Golf”, he tweeted.

“I knew you’d be all over it @rioferdy5 like you were in Qatar! That’s why you refused to do the opening game for @BBCMOTD didn’t want to criticize your paymaster!”, he added.

Saudi Arabia football is one of the fastest-growing competitions in world football and its vast wealth and recruitment have been the dominant story of this summer’s transfer window.

Notable among football stars who have made the Saudi Pro League one of the most talked about is Portuguese International Cristian Ronaldo who plays for Al-Nasr, Karim Benzema, and N’golo Kante who both joined AI-Ittihad in June. Roberto Firminho from Liverpool to Al-Ahli.

Others are; Ruben Neves from Wolves to Al Hilal, Jota from Celtic to Al-Ittihad, Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan to Al Nassr, and Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy from Chelsea respectively to Al Hilal.

Sadio Mane has denied reports suggesting an imminent transfer to a Saudi Arabian club

The future of Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane remains uncertain, as his manager has changed his stance regarding the player’s immediate destination.

Mane, who joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool, may be facing a potentially lengthy summer as he could be on the verge of leaving the club after just one season, despite being part of the reigning Bundesliga champions.

A reported falling out with teammate Leroy Sane and a struggle to adapt to the Bundesliga have added to speculation that Mane could be seeking a transfer away from Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, initial discussions between Mane and teams in the top tier of Saudi Arabian football have taken place, although they are still in the early stages.

    Mane’s agent denies transfer rumour

However, the player’s manager, Bacary Cisse, has recently denied the rumoured offers from clubs in the Middle Eastern country, even claiming discussions had not taken place at all.

He said, via @iMiaSanMia on Twitter, quoting 365Scores Arabia’s Ismaeel Mahmoud:

Earlier reports from Goal have stated that Mane has remained firm about staying with Bayern Munich despite the rumours, but the club might have different idea in mind.

With the Bavarians still pursuing Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane as Robert Lewandowski’s replacement up front, there may well be less room for the Senegalese star next term.

    Mane, Firmino reuniting in Saudi?

In news related to the forward, Sports Brief reported that if Mane joined the Saudi league, he would become part of a long list of players to sign up for the country’s top flight.

Al-Ahli are said to be interested in signing the Senegalese forward, wanting to reunite him with his ex-Liverpool teammate, Roberto Firmino, who joined earlier this week.

Di Maria shun Saudi, signs new deal with Benfica

Portuguese giants Benfica have officially announced the return of Argentina’s Angel Di Maria for a second spell, following his departure from Juventus.

The 35-year-old, who is a World Cup winner, left Juventus as a free agent last month amidst speculation that he might be pursued by a Saudi Arabian club.

Contrary to expectations, Di Maria, who previously spent seven successful years at Paris Saint-Germain before his brief stint at Juventus, has opted to join Benfica, marking his return to the Portuguese club.

“Angel Di Maria has signed a contract with Sport Lisboa e Benfica and is a new addition to the team led by Roger Schmidt,” Benfica said in a statement, without giving further details.

Di Maria was previously with the Lisbon club between 2007-10, before spending five seasons at Real Madrid and one at Manchester United ahead of his stay in Paris.

  • Sadio Mane to reunite with ex teammate as Saudi talks loom

Sadio Mane to reunite with ex teammate as Saudi talks loom

After spending only one season with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, there are indications that forward Sadio Mane might be departing from the Allianz Arena.

Despite the team’s overall success, Mane’s debut campaign in Germany did not go as smoothly as expected.

In 38 appearances, the Senegalese forward managed to score only 12 goals, which fell short of the desired impact.

Furthermore, in April, Mane faced suspension following a confrontation with his teammate Leroy Sane.

Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Bayern Munich could be open to considering offers for the 31-year-old, despite having spent £25 million to acquire him from Liverpool just a year ago.

    Mane to join Saudi league?

According to reports from transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, initial talks and approaches with the Saudi teams have taken place, but they are only at an early stage.

Mane would become the latest in a long list of names to join the Saudi Pro League this summer if he was to move on from Bayern.

The likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Ruben Neves have all already moved to the division, with several more names expected to follow suit in what are turning out to be mega-money moves.

Al-Ahli are said to be one club interested in signing the Senegalese forward, wanting to reunite him with former Liverpool team-mate, Roberto Firmino, who joined earlier this week.

Mane was voted Bundesliga flop of the season by the players themselves last term in a poll carried out by Sky Germany, as quoted by Givemesport.

He received 47.1 percent of the vote, with second-place Joshua Kimmich picking up 7.1 percent from his colleagues.

If he doesn’t leave, he could yet be given a chance to redeem himself at Bayern under Thomas Tuchel, who led the side to Bundesliga success for the 11th year in a row.

With the potential arrival of Harry Kane, a sale of Mané would not only free up more money for Bayern to use but it will also free up space for attacking options.

    Mane excited after winning Bundesliga

Sports Brief previously reported Mane shared his excitement after Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga on the final day of the season.

On a dramatic day in the German league, Bayern needed a win against Koln with the hope that Borussia Dortmund would slip at home to Mainz.

Having taken the lead through Kingsley Coman, the Bavarians were pegged back with nine minutes remaining after Dejan Ljubicic levelled for the hosts from the spot.

With Dortmund losing 2-1 in the other game, the Black and Yellows were set to be crowned champions. However, their dreams were dashed after Jamal Musiala netted a late winner for Bayern Munich.

  • Liverpool’s Firmino signs deal with Saudi side Al Ahli

Liverpool’s Firmino signs deal with Saudi side Al Ahli

After leaving Liverpool as a free agent, Roberto Firmino, the Brazilian striker aged 31, has joined Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli.

Firmino’s departure from Anfield came after the expiration of his contract at the end of the previous season.

During his time at Liverpool, which began in 2015 following his transfer from Hoffenheim, Firmino made 362 appearances, scoring 111 goals, and providing 79 assists.

He played a pivotal role in Jurgen Klopp’s successful tenure, including winning the Champions League in 2019, securing the Premier League title the following season, and achieving the FA Cup and Carabao Cup double in 2022.

Firmino now follows in the footsteps of former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy by joining Al Ahli, based in Jeddah.

The club earned promotion to the Saudi Pro League last season after facing relegation in the 2021-2022 season.

Upon confirming his departure from Liverpool in May, Firmino expressed his heartfelt farewell message to the fans through Instagram, cementing his status as a beloved figure amongst the supporters.

It read: “My last match in Anfield was incredible!

“And my whole time in Liverpool has been nothing but wonderful. I will never forget the roar of the Kop and the passion from all of you.

“The family and myself will forever carry this great club in our hearts.

“We are so grateful for everything we were allowed to experience with you in these 8 years — the wins, the losses, the titles, the heartbreaks — this all helped me to become the man I am today.

“I can truly say that Liverpool has become a part of my family. Thank you all.”

  • List of confirmed Saudi transfer deals so far

List of confirmed Saudi transfer deals so far

The emergence of the Saudi Pro League has become a significant topic of discussion in this summer’s transfer window.

With the Public Investment Fund (PIF) now holding a 75% ownership stake in four of the nation’s prominent clubs, namely Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, and Al-Ahli, their financial capabilities have seen a remarkable surge.

Consequently, several prominent European football stars are opting to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and join the Saudi Arabian league.

Here, we provide an overview of all the significant completed transfers in this regard.

    Karim Benzema (Al-Ittihad)

Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, 35, got Saudi’s summer business under way by joining champions Al-Ittihad on a free transfer.

The Real Madrid icon signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year, which is reportedly worth around £100million per season.

    N’Golo Kante (Al-Ittihad)

N’Golo Kante, 32, chose to walk the same path as his compatriot Benzema by moving to the Jeddah-based outfit on a free transfer.

The all-action midfielder left Chelsea after seven years of quality service, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal worth a reported £86m per season.

    Ruben Neves (Al-Hilal)

Wolves received a club record fee of £47m from Al-Hilal for their former captain Ruben Neves, who had just one year remaining on his deal at Molineux.

The Portuguese midfielder — still only 26 — signed a three-year contract with the 18-time Saudi Pro League champions.

    Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal)

Neves will play alongside Kalidou Koulibaly in Riyadh next season following the centre-back’s departure from Chelsea just a year after signing from Napoli.

The deal for the 32-year-old defender cost Al-Hilal a reported £20m in transfer fees, with his contract running until 2026.

    Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli)

Edouard Mendy became the third Chelsea star to seal a Middle East move when joining Al-Ahli for an undisclosed fee.

Having played a key role in the Blues’ 2021 Champions League triumph, the Senegal stopper lost his starting spot at Stamford Bridge last term and has now headed for pastures new.

    Marcelo Brozovic (Al-Nassr)

Marcelo Brozovic, 30, decided to join Ronaldo at Al-Nassr for a reported fee of £15m, the Croatian midfielder signing a three-year contract with the nine-time Saudi Pro League winners.

The 87-cap international was a key figure at Inter Milan for many years and started in the Nerazzurri’s recent Champions League final defeat to Manchester City.

  • Lukaku turns down lucrative £45 million offer per anum from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal

Lukaku turns down lucrative £45 million offer per anum from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal

Romelu Lukaku has rejected a massive offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal worth £45 million ($57m), as he only wants to leave Chelsea for Inter.

Lukaku spent last season on loan at Inter and wants to remain at the San Siro for the 2023-24 season but Inter have yet to table a formal transfer bid, instead hoping to sign the Belgium international on loan once more.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Al-Hilal tabled an eye-watering offer worth £45m-per-season for Lukaku, but he has opted against following team-mates Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, and N’Golo Kante to the Middle East.

The Sun reports that Chelsea are unwilling to sanction another loan, and have told Lukaku that he will either have to leave permanently or stay and play under Mauricio Pochettino next season.

It remains to be seen if Inter will be able to fund a move for Lukaku, who scored 10 Serie A goals last season, but they are in talks with Manchester United over a deal to sell goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Lukaku now faces being left in limbo if Inter are unable to fund a bid. He has seemingly made it clear, however, that he has no intention of moving to Saudi Arabia, so there is a real possibility that he could be forced into staying at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku will return to Chelsea next month, if a deal to sell him is not brokered before then.

  • Hakim Ziyech’s potential move to Saudi Arabia uncertain after failed medicals

Hakim Ziyech’s potential move to Saudi Arabia uncertain after failed medicals

Hakim Ziyech’s transfer plans may once again be thwarted as recent reports suggest that he has not passed his medical examination ahead of a potential move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.

After a lackluster three-year spell at Chelsea, during which he failed to replicate the success he enjoyed at Ajax, Ziyech is poised to depart the club.

Despite Chelsea paying a significant fee of £34 million to acquire him in the summer of 2020, Ziyech struggled with injuries and inconsistencies, resulting in limited playing time.

Despite having multiple managers during his tenure at Stamford Bridge, he failed to win over any of them as a standout favorite.

According to ESPN, Ziyech had the opportunity to leave Chelsea in January, but his potential move to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed due to Chelsea mistakenly sending incorrect documentation three times on deadline day.

    Ziyech’s Saudi move in jeopardy

Hakim Ziyech’s transfer plans face uncertainty as it has been reported by Mirror UK that he did not pass his medical examination with Al-Nassr due to a knee problem being detected.

This development raises doubts about the move, which would have seen Chelsea receive £17 million, only half of what they initially paid for the 29-year-old Moroccan three years ago.

With Ziyech deemed surplus to requirements in London and new manager Mauricio Pochettino having different plans for the right wing position, the player will now have to consider other options.

The Saudi Pro League has served as an avenue for Chelsea to offload some of their unwanted players, with the likes of N’golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly being sent to the Gulf state.

  • Newcastle Utd in discussions to host friendly match between Saudi Arabia and Mexico at St James’ Park

Newcastle Utd in discussions to host friendly match between Saudi Arabia and Mexico at St James’ Park

Sources have informed ESPN that Newcastle United is currently in discussions to host a Saudi Arabia national team match at St James’ Park during the international break in September.

The Premier League club, which came under the majority ownership of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) in October 2021, successfully qualified for the Champions League at the conclusion of the previous season, marking their return to the competition after a 20-year absence.

Additionally, they reached a major final for the first time in this century, narrowly losing to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final held in February.

And sources have told ESPN that the club are now in discussions with the football federations of Saudi Arabia and Mexico over a friendly game between the two nations at Newcastle’s stadium on Sept. 7.

Mexico are planning to play two games in England — another fixture against South Korea at an English venue to be decided has been pencilled in for Sept. 12 — with their mini tour due to start with a game against Saudi, who they defeated 2-1 during the group stage of Qatar 2022 last November.

Sources have told ESPN that the game between Saudi Arabia and Mexico has still to be confirmed officially but that discussions are ongoing between the federations and Newcastle.

The English Football Association would also be required to grant permission for the game to be staged in this country.

Should the game take place at Newcastle, it would be the first time that the Saudi-owned club has staged a Saudi Arabia fixture at St James’ Park.

Newcastle sparked controversy last season by producing an away kit in the white-and-green colours of Saudi Arabia, but during the takeover process in 2021, assurances were given to the Premier League that the Saudi state would have no direct control over the club, despite the links between the PIF and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is the chairman of the PIF.

  • Mourinho rejects huge €30M per season offer to coach Saudi Club

Mourinho rejects huge €30M per season offer to coach Saudi Club

Following his rejection of a huge offer from top Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal to stay with the Serie A club, Jose Mourinho has reaffirmed his allegiance to AS Roma.

The Portuguese manager declined the invitation to join the Saudi Pro League at this point in his career after leading Roma to the European Conference League championship in his debut campaign.

According to Sportskeeda, football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, claimed that Al-Hilal offered Mourinho a whopping €30 million per season, which the Portuguese manager rejected.

The ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United manager, a two-time UEFA Champions League winner, turned down the proposal by the top Saudi Pro League club as he is focused on his job at Roma.

Mourinho, who still has one year left on his Roma contract, aims to continue building on the success he achieved with the Italian outfit after leading them to the Europa League final last season.

    Mourinho gets 10-day suspension

Meanwhile, the Italian Football Authority have punished Mourinho with a 10-day suspension for his remarks criticising referee, Daniele Chiffi, the BBC reports.

The Portuguese tactician was also fined £43,000 for his remarks after Roma’s Mehmet Zeki Celik was sent off six minutes into stoppage time at the end of a 1-1 Serie A draw.

Last year was difficult for Mourinho on the sidelines: he was shown three red cards for altercations with referees, including one from Chiffi in Roma’s defeat to Atalanta in September.

    Jose Mourinho quits UEFA role

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Mourinho quitting the UEFA Football Board via an official letter addressed to the European organisation’s Chief of Football, Zvonimir Boban.

US consulate guard and alleged attacker found dead in shooting incident in Saudi Arabia

As reported by local authorities and a consulate spokesperson, at least two persons were killed in a shooting incident on Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, close to the American embassy. One of those killed was a security guard for a consulate.

“A person in a car stopped near the American consulate building in Jeddah Governorate and got out of it carrying a firearm in his hand,” Saudi state news agency SPA said quoting a statement by the spokesperson for the Mecca city police. According to the report, the victim was killed during a gunfight with security personnel.

It also stated that “a Nepalese employee who was employed as a security guard at the consulate was injured and later died.”

A spokesperson for the consulate confirmed the incident. “There were two fatalities, including a member of the Consulate’s local guard force as well as the assailant, who was killed by Saudi security forces,” they said.

The spokesperson said the consulate was locked down during the incident, no Americans were harmed in the attack, and all official American and locally employed staff have been accounted for.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased local guards member,” the spokesperson said.

Saudi authorities are investigating the the incident.

  • “I prefer a place where I am wanted” – Kalidou Koulibaly throws subtle jab at Chelsea after exit

“I prefer a place where I am wanted” – Kalidou Koulibaly throws subtle jab at Chelsea after exit

Following his departure from Stamford Bridge, Kalidou Koulibaly has taken a scathing swipe at Chelsea.

The Senegalese defender is part of a group of Chelsea players who have been transferred to Middle Eastern clubs this summer.

According to The Sun, Koulibaly finalized his £17 million move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, where he will be joining former Wolverhampton Wanderers player Ruben Neves.

This exit from the west London club comes just a year after Koulibaly joined Chelsea from Napoli for a fee of £30 million.

Koulibaly, who was once rated among the top defenders in Europe, failed to adapt at Stamford Bridge, as he managed just 23 Premier League appearances while being sent off only in his third match.

The 32-year-old has now fired a parting shot at Chelsea following his exit from the club.

Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, the Senegalese criticised Chelsea’s management and leadership, pointing out that he expected to be given more importance in the team.

“I had no guarantees to get regular playing time [at Chelsea].

I was always professional but I don’t like to sit on the bench doing nothing,” he explained.

“I prefer a place where I am wanted and at the centre of the project and can be an example for young players.

The Premier League is fantastic and there are great players.

“They [Chelsea] expected the Koulibaly of Napoli, but I think my season was not so bad.

I needed time and in one year I couldn’t prove what I wanted because of the coach’s and club’s choices,” he added.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Mateo Kovacic has opened up on his decision to dump Chelsea to seal a sensational summer transfer move to Manchester City.

The Croatian midfielder became City’s first signing of the summer after the Premier League champions agreed to pay Chelsea £25m plus £5m in add-ons for his signature.

  • Asamoah Gyan reacts to Thomas Partey’s links to Saudi Arabia

Asamoah Gyan reacts to Thomas Partey’s links to Saudi Arabia

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has responded to reports of a $200 million offer made by a Saudi Arabian club to tempt Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

Gyan took to Twitter and posted a zipped mouth emoji in reaction to a tweet discussing whether Partey, given his age, should accept or reject the offer and focus on staying in Europe.

Drawing from his own career experience, Gyan made a surprising move from Sunderland to the United Arab Emirates after only one season in England.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, he explained that UEA club Al Ain made him an offer ‘he could not resist’.

“I was enjoying my football, but Al Ain offered me wages that instantly made me the best-paid footballer in Africa. I couldn’t resist,” he said.

According to the Saudi offer for Partey, he would receive an annual salary of $100 million, tax free in a two-year deal.

“Arsenal star Thomas Partey has been offered $200 million in wages by a club in Saudi Arabia. Partey will earn an annual, tax-free salary of $100 million if he signs the two-year deal.

The Saudi clubs keen on Partey are Al Ahli, Al Nassr, and Al Khaleej,” former Ghana Football Association spokesperson Saanie Daara reported in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey, 30, has attracted interest from Italian side Juventus, which offered him a three-year contract.

Thomas Partey, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2020, has two years left on his current contract.

  • Tensions rise among Liverpool fans over Mo Salah’s alleged move to Saudi club, Al Adalah

Tensions rise among Liverpool fans over Mo Salah’s alleged move to Saudi club, Al Adalah

Liverpool fans initially panicked when they heard the news of Mohamed Salah’s supposed transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al Adalah.

However, their anxiety quickly turned into amusement as they realized the situation was rather humorous.

The Saudi Arabian league has gained attention recently for signing prominent European players, so the idea of Salah moving to the Middle East didn’t seem entirely implausible at first glance.

In fact, sections of Liverpool fans briefly went into a state of panic on Thursday, June 22 after it was confirmed that Mohammed Salah was officially an Al Adalah player.

However, it is not the Salah you’re thinking of, as according to Daily Star, Al Adalah have signed the Liverpool ace’s namesake who plays as a left back.

Al Adalah, through the club’s Twitter handle, confirmed their new signing, whose name is eerily similar to that of Liverpool’s top marksman.

And fans could not help but see the funny side to it, as they poked fun on social media.

    @Futinho joked:

“Salah looks a bit different here.”

Another Twitter user @sandeepunsea chimed in saying:

“Klopp’s star player leaves!! Liverpool will fall out of the top 8 this season, mark my words.”

    @VictoryOwai added:

“Hope they didn’t mistake him for Liverpool Salah?”

    While Okerechidebe said:

“I was scared for a sec.”

    Salah for Liverpool

Despite the exits of the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Salah remains an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

He remains the club’s leading marksman, and his performances led to Jurgen Klopp’s side rewarding him with a new contract last year, which extended his stay at Anfield until 2025.

    When Salah blasted Liverpool

Sports Brief also reported on how Mohammed Salah blasted Liverpool for missing out on Champions League places.

The Reds will have to play in the second-tier Europa League in the 2023-24 season after Manchester United’s win over Chelsea confirmed their place in the final Champions League spot.

Europa League will be unfamiliar territory for Salah, as it is the first time Liverpool have failed to qualify for the Champions League since 2017.

  • Jamie Carragher warns Bernado Silva to stay off Saudi deals

Jamie Carragher warns Bernado Silva to stay off Saudi deals

Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns about the increasing trend of football players leaving European leagues to join Middle Eastern clubs.

Carragher’s warning came in response to reports linking Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva with a potential move to the top flight in Saudi Arabia.

According to ESPN, Silva has received a lucrative offer from the Middle East, which presents a tempting proposition for the Portuguese star. Carragher’s remarks highlight the potential impact of such moves on European football and the allure of the financial incentives involved.

Several Premier League stars, including N’golo Kante and Hakim Ziyech, have all but secured moves to the Middle East, leading to a concern over the transfer dealings between the Middle Eastern nation and some European clubs.

While there is no doubt Saudi Arabia has made its presence known in the transfer market, Carragher is concerned about the future of European top-flight leagues, specifically the Premier League.

The former footballer-turned-pundit tweeted on Wednesday, June 21 that has since gone viral as it rang alarm bells over the potential of top football stars abandoning Europe in their prime to play in Saudi Arabia.

“Bernardo Silva is in his peak years & has been one of the best players in Europe for the last five years,” he tweeted.

“I wasn’t worried about the Saudi League taking players in their 30’s, a touch worried with players below the elite (Neves) but if this happens it feels like a game changer.”

Who else has joined Saudi Arabia?

Interestingly, Carragher’s colleague Gary Neville also recently called on investigations into the big money transfers and offers from Saudi Arabia to big names in European football.

Wolverhampton Wanderers playmaker Ruben Neves also stunned the football world recently, after it was confirmed that he would be joining the Saudi Arabia pro league, ending speculation of a potential move to Barcelona.

Karim Benzema also recently joined Al Ittihad, while there are rumours Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is also on his way to the Middle East.

Son Heung Min addresses Saudi rumours

Sports Brief also reported on Son Heung Min’s response when asked about rumours linking him to Saudi Arabia.

The South Korean maintained he had unfinished business in the Premier League, and would likely stay at Tottenham next season.

“I have many things to do in the Premier League,” he said as quoted on The Sun.

  • Saudi Arabian clubs allegedly set eyes Thomas Partey

Saudi Arabian clubs allegedly set eyes Thomas Partey

Unnamed Saudi Arabian clubs are reportedly preparing their initial offer for Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the clubs are willing to pay €40 million for the player in a structured payment plan.

“Understand Saudi clubs are prepared to pay €40m in instalments to Arsenal for Thomas Partey. He’s a concrete option for Saudi — his exit is possible as revealed on Sunday.”

Romano also confirmed that some European clubs have expressed interest in Partey who is yet to decide his future.

“No decision yet on player side. He also has approaches from Europe. No new deal talks at the moment.”

The Ghanaian is on Arsenals’ outgoing list as the club aims at freeing up their wage bill to make room for new signings.

However, the Gunners are only willing to cash in on Partey, who has two years left in his contract, for the right price.

Thomas Partey, who has been a big contributor to Arsenal’s resurgence, joined the Gunners in 2020.

The club is looking to replace the 30-year-old as they aim at signing West Ham United midfielder, Declan Rice to rebuild their midfield.

Arsenal have had their first bid of £90 million for Rice rejected. The Hammers are said to be demanding £120 million.

Son Heung Min refutes Saudi move news, says “money doesn’t matter” now

Son Heung Min has put an end to speculations surrounding a potential transfer to Saudi Arabia with a brief statement regarding his future.

The talented South Korean player did not perform at his peak for Spurs during the 2022/23 season, leading to discussions about the possibility of his departure from the Premier League.

ESPN reports had indicated that Son had caught the attention of clubs in Saudi Arabia, with Al-Ittihad being the most likely destination for the 30-year-old.

Al-Ittihad recently became the second Saudi Arabian club to secure a major signing after unveiling Karim Benzema, who signed for free after his Real Madrid contract ended.

    Son’s stance on his future

Despite links to Saudi Arabia, Son clarified that he would not be leaving the Premier League anytime soon as he believes he has ‘unfinished business’.

“I have many things to do in the Premier League,” he said as quoted on The Sun.

“Money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favourite league is important.

“I want to play more for Tottenham.”

The Middle East club, managed by former Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, were reportedly willing to offer Tottenham £51m for Son’s services.

Which other stars could join Saudi?

Despite Son’s unwillingness to leave the Premier League, the Saudi Arabia league is still set to reap massively from other big names.

Chelsea stars N’golo Kante, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly are all poised to leave London for the Middle East, with Kante set to become an Al Ittihad player.

Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also announced on Tuesday that Hakim Ziyech had verbally agreed with Al-Nassr, a club that Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays for.

European clubs call for Saudi investigations

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported growing suspicion over the transfer dealings between Saudi Arabia clubs and Chelsea.

The Middle Eastern nation has become a good hunting ground for elite football players following Cristiano Ronaldo’s blockbuster move to Al-Nassr in January.

There are concerns that Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers are using the lofty offers from the Middle East nation to balance out their books.

N’Golo Kanté to play for Saudi club Al-Ittihad in football

N’Golo Kanté, a French football player, has signed a contract to play with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ittihad announced on Wednesday their recruitment of the Chelsea midfielder and 2018 World Cup winner, who will join his fellow countryman Karim Benzema.

The 32-year-old signed a pre-contract in June for three years with the club. However, his recruitment was on condition of medical exams, after the player sustained several injuries this season. The contract was finalised on Tuesday.

The Jeddah-based club made the announcement on Twitter accompanied by a photo of the footballer wearing his yellow and black striped jersey.

The club also posted a video of Benzema who congratulated Kanté, saying, “I am very happy to be playing with you once again. And of course, in the best team in Saudi.”

In the same video, Kante replied saying he is “very excited to play with the Tigers in front of the fans at Al-Jawhara [stadium].”

Kanté joins Benzema, 35, who was welcomed in Jeddah in early June by by thousands of Al-Ittihad supporters. Benzema made the move after fourteen seasons with Real Madrid.
“Kanté’s arrival is considered as one of the most prestigious recruitments and one of the most important in the club’s history,” said Al-Ittihad.
The two French players’ recruitment comes amidst an offensive launched by Saudia Arabia on European football clubs. Cristiano Ronaldo joined Saudi club Al Nassr in late December 2022.
The kingdom, criticised for human rights abuses, is determined to use football to improve its image on the world stage and has plenty of petrodollars to satisfy its ambitions.

The deceased was believed to have hailed from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased was said to be on visiting visa, which is not allowed by Saudi authorities for pilgrimage.

Such persons are said to infiltrate the Ghanaian camp annually to observe the Hajj at the expense of government-registered pilgrims.

This year, the Ghana Hajj Board warned would-be pilgrims not to attempt to travel to Saudi Arabia with such visas as they would be arrested and handed over to the authorities.

Over the weekend, three of such persons were arrested. Zulfawu Ishaku was said to have travelled to Mecca during Umrah season with the intention to stay over and perform Hajj with those officially permitted to.

Unfortunately, on her part, she went through difficult times during her stay which led to a worsening medical situation, resulting in her demise.

Officials of the Ghana Consulate has been informed about the situation and processes are underway to have her buried.

Steven Gerrard rejects Saudi’s Al-Ettifaq managerial job

After rumours that the former Liverpool captain was debating accepting a job offer as coach of Saudi Premier League team Al-Ettifaq, Steven Gerrard has stated he has made the decision not to accept the position.

The 43-year-old moved to Aston Villa, where he was fired in October, after leading Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership championship in ten years in 2021.

“I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did,” the former England captain told Channel 4.

“I have been analysing that over the last couple of days. But, as we stand right now, I won’t be taking that offer up.”

Several high-profile names have been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia in recent months after Cristiano Ronaldo signed with Al-Nassr in December.

Silva turns down Saudi offer, while Barca, PSG show interest

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has received a lucrative offer to join the Saudi Pro League, and talks have already been held according to the Athletic.

However, Silva intends to turn down the opportunity.

Despite his rejection, the Saudi clubs remain determined in their pursuit of high-profile signings this summer.

It is reported that Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Edouard Mendy are also poised to join SPL clubs, while Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo have already made the move.

Silva is under contract with Man City until 2025, but has been strongly linked with a move away.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are both reportedly interested and the midfielder would prefer to continue to ply his trade in Europe.

Barcelona were interested in signing Silva in January but couldn’t raise the €70 million needed, while Man City were reluctant to part ways while the season was ongoing.

He played a vital role in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign last season, featuring 55 times across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and eight assists.

6,000 Ghanaians set to perform Hajj this year

As part of the five pillars of Islam, an estimated 6,000 Ghanaians are anticipated to participate in this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

As such, a first set of over 400 Muslims have left Accra for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj.

This comes after the first flight for the pilgrimage was delayed due to technical challenges.

Communications Director for the Hajj Board, Alhaji Rahman Gomda made this known in an interview in Accra on Monday.

“The flight has taken off already. 437 [persons] have taken off to Saudi Arabia. The aircraft came yesterday to start the flight, the maiden flight from Accra. So the second one has taken off. We will have the third one tomorrow and another one on Thursday.”

“This year we had a quota of 6000. Every year, the Saudi authorities give quota. Ghana’s quota this year is 6,000. Last year it was 3,069 as a result of COVID-19,” he stated.

  • Saudi making a huge mistake buying players in final stages of their career – UEFA boss

Saudi making a huge mistake buying players in final stages of their career – UEFA boss

Aleksander Ceferin, head of UEFA, stated on Sunday that European clubs should not be concerned about a player exodus to Saudi Arabia and that the Middle Eastern nation was misjudging its decision to invest in stars who were towards the end of their careers.

This year, record-breaking contracts were offered to Lionel Messi, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema by Saudi Arabian teams.

They are all at least 35 and have won every Ballon d’Or given since 2008.

More players are expected to follow after four top Saudi Arabian clubs were effectively nationalised this month when taken into majority ownership by the Public Investment Fund sovereign wealth operation chaired by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Portugal international Ruben Neves is the latest player to be linked with a move, with Sky Sports reporting that Wolverhampton Wanderers have accepted a £47m bid from Al Hilal for the 26-year-old, who had been a target for Barcelona.

Ceferin was asked by Dutch broadcaster NOS if he was afraid of a player exodus, and answered emphatically: “No, no, no.”

“I think that it’s mainly a mistake for Saudi Arabian football. Why is that a problem for them? Because they should invest in academies, they should bring coaches, and they should develop their own players.”

“The system of buying the players that almost ended their career is not the system that develops football,” he added. “It was a similar mistake in China when they all brought players who are at the end of their career.”

Didier Drogba was the star recruit to the Chinese league in 2012 as clubs there bought Europe-based forwards such as Nicolas Anelka and Frederic Kanoute. However, the Chinese league and men’s national team have made little progress internationally in the years since.

“Tell me one player who is top, top age and who starts his career and went to play in Saudi Arabia?” Ceferin asked during the interview on the sideline of the Nations League Finals hosted in the Netherlands. “But it’s not about money only. Players want to win top competitions. And top competition is in Europe.”

Ronaldo speaks on how Saudi heat has changed his training times after transfer to Al-Nassr

After making his transfer to Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo has acknowledged the challenges he faced in adapting to the heat and timing of training schedules.

The Portuguese forward made the move in December 2022, embarking on a new phase of his professional career.

However, the extreme heat in Saudi Arabia proved to be a hurdle initially, with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius during the summer. To combat this, training sessions are primarily conducted in the evening, a departure from the usual practice in European clubs.

Ronaldo conceded that it took him some time to acclimate to this difference but assured that he has now fully settled into his new environment.

“The biggest difference I have found in Saudi is obviously the heat and adapting schedules to train later in the day when it is cooler,” he said in his capacity as LiveScore ambassador. “But I have really gotten used to that now.

The fans here have been incredible to me, welcoming me, and those that follow me to continue on this amazing journey.

Every league and country is different and I am very proud to have experienced three different leagues in Europe (and won titles in them all).”

Following in Ronaldo’s footsteps, former Real Madrid skipper Karim Benzema and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante are also set to be part of the Saudi Pro League in the next campaign.

The Portuguese is excited about the arrival of more top-quality talent and believes that the league will develop immensely over the next few years.

“It hasn’t surprised me but it makes me really happy to see people all across the world now watching the Saudi Pro League. I believe the league will continue to develop and many more players from European leagues will come here to play,” he added.

After completing the 2022-23 Saudi Pro League campaign, Ronaldo will shift his focus to international football as he is set to return to action with Portugal against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 17, in a Euro 2024 qualifying fixture.

The French international has officially penned a three-year deal worth close to €200 million a year after tax.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is already here, he is a friend who shows that Saudi Arabia is starting to get ahead and I am here to win as I did in Europe.”

Real Madrid, on Sunday, June 3, 2023, confirmed that Karim Benzema will leave the club at the end of the 2022/2023 season after 14 years of service.

The European giants in a statement, cited that the two parties agreed to go their separate ways.

“Real Madrid C. F. and our captain @KarimBenzema have agreed to end his brilliant and unforgettable stage as a player for our club. Real Madrid want to show their gratitude and all their love to one of our greatest legends.”

Benzema played his last game for Madrid on Sunday in a one-all draw against Athletic Club, in which he scored.

Benzema won 24 titles during his time at Real Madrid including five UEFA Champions League titles.

  • Saudi Arabia’s planned output cuts send oil prices up

Saudi Arabia’s planned output cuts send oil prices up

Oil prices have experienced an increase following Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it would reduce its daily oil production by one million barrels in July.

Other members of OPEC+, a coalition of oil-producing nations, have also agreed to continue their production cuts in an effort to stabilize declining prices.

OPEC+ is responsible for approximately 40% of the world’s crude oil, and its decisions hold significant influence over oil prices. During Monday’s Asian trading, Brent crude oil saw a rise of up to 2.4% before settling around $77 per barrel.

In addition to the production cuts for July, OPEC+ has revealed plans to further decrease production targets by 1.4 million barrels per day starting in 2024.

The meeting of oil-rich nations, which lasted for seven hours on Sunday, took place amid a backdrop of falling energy prices. While oil prices surged when Russia invaded Ukraine last year, they have now returned to pre-conflict levels.

In October of the previous year, OPEC+ had agreed to a production cut of two million barrels per day, equivalent to around 2% of global demand.

In April 2023, the group had further extended these cuts until the end of the year. However, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that Sunday’s discussions resulted in an “extension of the deal until the end of 2024.”

On Sunday, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that his country’s cut of one million bpd could be extended beyond July if needed. “This is a Saudi lollipop,” he said, in what is seen as a bid to stabilise the market.

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his support for the notion of elite football stars like himself joining the Saudi Pro League.

In a daring move, Ronaldo departed Europe for the Middle East, signing a lucrative contract with Al-Nassr in January, following his controversial departure from Manchester United.

His transfer has generated unparalleled interest in Saudi football, with rumors suggesting that numerous European stars could follow in Ronaldo’s footsteps.

Speaking on the prospect of seeing big players switch to the Gulf state, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner – who has predicted the Saudi League to be among the best in the world in the coming years – suggested their presence in the competition will help in improving its quality.

“Life goes very well. The [Saudi] league is good. The big players are all welcome. If this happens, the league will improve,” he told SPL Chat, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

CR7 in an interview with Piers Morgan

Ronaldo’s former teammate, Karim Benzema has been heavily linked with a move to reigning Saudi champions, Al-Ittihad, while PSG superstar, Lionel Messi has also been tipped to join Al-Hilal, per Football Espana.

    Ronaldo ends Al-Nassr exit rumours

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has discussed his Saudi future with league side, Al-Nassr, amid speculation he is unhappy in the Gulf state, Sports Brief reported.

The Portuguese veteran’s Middle East sojourn ended on a disappointing note after failing to inspire the Knights of Nahd to silverware in his first season.

Ronaldo has since been linked with a return to Europe with Saudi-backed Premier League side, Newcastle United, but the veteran does not seem to agree.

Sports Brief also reported on Karim Benzema discussing his Real Madrid future after being heavily tipped to leave Spain favour of a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Frenchman’s future has been the subject of much speculation over the last few days, with many claiming he will join Ronaldo in the Middle East nation.

Fan advise Benzema to ditch Real Madrid for “the big bag” in Saudi

As rumors linking Karim Benzema to Saudi club Al Ittihad continue to circulate, the French striker has received advice to consider a move from Europe to the Middle East.

Benzema’s current contract with Real Madrid is due to expire this summer, and while there have been reports of a potential renewal, no official announcement has been made yet.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly urged Benzema to have a conversation about his future, particularly in light of the growing speculation surrounding a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, according to Football Espana.

    Carlo Ancelotti and Benzema

The 35-year-old, who has endured a topsy-turvy campaign, has reportedly been presented with a contract surpassing €400 million (£346m/$439m) for a span of two seasons, GOAL reports.

Additionally, this agreement includes compensation for his role as an ambassador in the upcoming World Cup bid.

Reports of Benzema’s purported mega contract have left tongues wagging on social media, with many urging the current Ballon d’Or holder to ditch Europe for the money bag in the Middle East.

    Fans advise Benzema to leave

A devout Real Madrid fan, @FAROUKATIPAGA, told Benzema:

“Benz, don’t think twice. Just go. You have won everything at club level with the best club in the world. Nothing to prove to anyone again. Go for the bag, Alhaji.”

    @Irunnia_ reasoned:

“These Saudi teams are crazy rich. What is Benzema still doing in Madrid? €100 per season is crazy, and he doesn’t have to pay tax. The money is all his. He’s won everything, after all.”

    @kwaku_majesty_ added:

“He should leave and go for the big bag.”

@Jack_at_joat reckons Benzema will eventually be tempted to join Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League:

“He’s done it all. He takes the 100m a year. Who the hell wouldn’t at that age?”

@Supreme_Utd rehashed the suggestions of most fans:

“Secure the bag, Benzema. You have won it all already.”

    Benzema receives lucrative offer

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema could be on his way to Saudi Arabia – if recent reports are anything to go by.

The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract extension to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium last season but is also said to have received a €200 million offer to the Middle East.

The current Ballon d’Or holder has had a hit-and-miss season as Los Blancos have only won one of the three trophies they were vying for, along with the Club World Cup.

  • China abstains from the G20 summit hosted by India in Kashmir

China abstains from the G20 summit hosted by India in Kashmir

Despite opposition from rights organisations and anticipated boycotts from a few nations, India has defended its intention to host a Group of 20 (G20) conference in the Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian government has promoted this week’s tourism summit in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, as an opportunity to highlight the culture of the area.

Since India revoked its special status and divided the erstwhile state into two federal regions in 2019, this is the first large-scale international event to be conducted in the contested, Muslim-dominated region. Ladakh, which had previously been a part of the state, was divided into its own independent province.

Ladakh is a disputed region along the Line of Actual Control, a de-facto border between India and China. Both countries claim parts of it.

China on Friday said it would not attend the meeting, citing its opposition “to holding any kind of G20 meetings in disputed territory,” according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

Since a clash involving hand-to-hand fighting in 2020 claimed the lives of at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers, both sides have deployed thousands of troops to the area, where they remain in what appears to be a semi-permanent stand-off.

Tensions along the de factor border have been simmering for more than 60 years and have spilled over into war before. In 1962 a month-long conflict ended in a Chinese victory and India losing thousands of square miles of territory.

Other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey, were expected to boycott the event.

Kashmir is one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints. Claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, the mountainous region has been the epicenter for more than 70 years of an often violent territorial struggle between the nuclear-armed neighbors. A de facto border called the Line of Control divides it between New Delhi and Islamabad.

India said the move to revoke Kashmir’s semi-autonomy was to ensure the nation’s laws were equal for all citizens and to increase economic development in the region, as well as to end separatism and terrorism it alleged was aided and abetted by Pakistan.

On Saturday, India’s tourism secretary, Arvind Singh, said the meeting will not only to “showcase (Kashmir’s) potential for tourism” but also “signal globally the restoration of stability and normalcy in the region.”

In April, Pakistan, which is not a G20 member, criticized India’s decision to hold the tourism meeting in Kashmir, calling it an “irresponsible” move.

Last week, Fernand de Varennes, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, said the Indian government was “seeking to normalize what some have described as a military operation by instrumentalizing a G20 meeting” in a region where fears of human rights violations and violence are rife.

In a statement on Twitter, India’s permanent mission to Geneva rejected de Varennes’s criticism, calling the allegations “baseless and unwarranted.”

Earlier this month, India said the G20 meeting in Srinagar “aims to strengthen economic growth, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable development of the region.”

India, the world’s largest democracy with a population of more than 1.4 billion, has been keen to position itself as a leader of emerging and developing nations since it assumed the G20 presidency.

Arguably India’s most celebrated event of the year, the G20 has been heavily promoted domestically, with sprawling billboards featuring Modi’s face plastered across the country.

Modi’s political allies were keen to push his international credentials, portraying him as a key player in the global order.

Hajj Board sends delegation to inspect facilities in Saudi Arabia ahead of pilgrimage

A delegation led by Board Chair of the Pilgrims Affairs of Ghana, Ben Abdallah Banda, is in Saudi Arabia to inspect facilities ahead of this year’s Hajj.

The inspection is expected to last for three days to ensure the about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are well catered for.

The first batch of Ghana’s Hajj pilgrims are expected to leave Ghana for Saudi Arabia on June 9, 2023.

Things looked out for include accommodation and transportation.

These facilities and logistics were procured before the new board was established and the visit, according to the board.

“Since our appointment, we have had series of engagements with various stakeholders in Ghana, and this visit is to give us a deep insight into what has been arranged,” Ben Abdallah Banda said.

“We have to see things on the ground for first hand information and further engage, where necessary, to ensure all is well before the pilgrims start arriving,” he added.

Messi’s dad and agent blasts media for false publication about son’s future

There is still uncertainty regarding Lionel Messi’s footballing future, as he has yet to decide where he will play next season.

His father and agent, Jorge Messi, wanted to dispel recent rumors about his son’s future.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, it was claimed that Messi had already agreed to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

The report suggested that the World Cup winner would sign a contract worth £522 million with Al-Hilal and reignite his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi’s father has since shot down the rumours, saying that the media sources knowingly publishing fake news lack respect, Football Espana reported. Jorge released a statement on social media, explaining that his son has not agreed on a deal with any club.

“There is absolutely nothing with any club for next year. The decision will not be made before Lionel finishes the season with PSG. Once the season is over, it will be time to analyse and see what is there, and then make a decision,” part of the statement read.

The statement criticised the publications that use Messi’s name to gain publicity.

“It seems to me a lack of respect towards the media that do their due diligence, that there are those who consciously and deliberately deceive, without providing any proof of their claims,” Jorge said in the statement.

    Messi’s wife hesitant about move

Lionel Messi’s potential move to Saudi Arabia has received a subtle blow, with his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, reportedly hesitant about the deal.

Messi has received a mega offer from Al-Hilal in a deal believed to be valued at least 400 million euros per year to ditch European football for the Middle East.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this season, Sports Brief reported.

PSG announces Messi’s return to training after ban for Saudi Arabia trip

Lionel Messi has resumed training with Paris St-Germain after being suspended for taking an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia.

The Ligue 1 club announced on their official Twitter account on Monday that the 35-year-old Argentine player had returned to the team after being fined and suspended for visiting the Middle Eastern country without permission, as it was a promotional visit.

The post, which was accompanied by a photograph of the World Cup winner in training kit, said simply: “Leo Messi back in training this Monday morning.”

Messi, who is an ambassador for the Saudi Tourism Authority, was pictured in Riyadh the day after his side had suffered a surprise defeat to Lorient.

He later revealed in a video posted on his official Instagram account that he had to make the trip for contractual reasons, having previously cancelled it, and had assumed he had a day off.

Messi said: “I wanted to make this video due to everything that is happening.

“First of all, I want to say sorry to my team-mates and to the club. I honestly thought that we were going to be free after the game, as had been the case in previous weeks.

“I had organised this trip to Saudi Arabia, which had been cancelled previously and this time I couldn’t. I apologise again and I’m here for whatever the club decide. All the best.”

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner joined PSG from Barcelona in August 2021 after the Catalan club ran into severe financial difficulties and, although a return has been mooted, those difficulties make that unlikely.

In recent days, he has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia’s Pro League amid reports he could earn up to £320million a year.

In the first confirmation that the meetings had started, the Saudi foreign ministry said both sides recognised the need to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people.

It said, as well as stopping the fighting, the aim was to ensure the delivery of relief supplies and the restoration of essential services.

There’s been no comment from the Sudanese army or its rivals from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on the talks.

The meetings in Jeddah are the first since the fighting broke out more than three weeks ago.

Messi’s Saudi travel bruised PSG’s pride – Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry has implied that Lionel Messi’s trip to Saudi Arabia may have caused a blow to the ego of Paris Saint-Germain’s owners, resulting in the club’s decision to fine the Argentine player and suspend him for two weeks.

The trip was taken without the permission of manager Christophe Galtier.

As per the report by Goal, Henry has further disclosed that since PSG’s owners belong to Qatar, a country at odds with Saudi Arabia, Messi’s visit to the Middle Eastern country may have resulted in the club feeling aggrieved.

“They hit a shot, maybe because he’s not going to stay. Or did the destination he went to affect their pride a little? But there were much more serious things that happened at PSG. Was Messi right? No, you don’t miss a practice.”

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been at loggerheads since the beginning of the Arab Spring, which left a power vacuum both states sought to fill. Qatar supported the revolutionary wave and Saudi Arabia opposed it.

    PSG responds to Messi’s apology

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi was excluded from Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash against Troyes this weekend despite apologising for his unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia, Daily Mirror reports.

Kylian Mbappe, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz all scored for the Parisians who ran out 3-1 winners against Troyes to tighten their grip on the Ligue 1 title this season.

PSG have now garnered 78 points from 34 matches played thus far and are six points clear of second place who have 72 points from same number of matches played this season.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is not expected to feature in the games against Troyes and Ajaccio.
