Trump and Biden triumph in Tuesday’s primaries in US

Joe Biden and Donald Trump won the most votes from their party in primaries on Tuesday. This helps them get closer to having a rematch in the November election.

Biden and Trump both won the primary elections in Ohio on Tuesday. Biden is a Democrat and Trump is a Republican. Trump won the election for the Republican candidate in Florida. Biden won all of Florida’s delegates without a contest because the Democrats there canceled their primary. This has happened before for other presidents. Trump and Biden are likely to win the primaries in Arizona and Kansas on Tuesday. This will give them more support after becoming the chosen nominees for their parties last week.

Other groups of people who are not the president could help us understand how the country feels about politics. In the Ohio Senate primary, a businessman named Bernie Moreno, backed by Trump, won against two other candidates, Frank LaRose and Matt Dolan. Dolan’s family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team.

In Chicago, people who can vote will choose if they want to add a tax on property just one time. This money will pay for new services for people who don’t have a home. Voters in California will soon choose a new person to take over for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who left his job after losing his position in the Republican party.

Trump and Biden have been concentrating on the big election for weeks. They are now focusing on states that could be close in November, instead of just ones that have primary elections.

Trump voted in Florida at a center in Palm Beach on Tuesday and said to reporters, “I voted for Donald Trump. ”

Trump went to Ohio on Saturday to give a speech and support the Republican party. Ohio used to be a state that showed which way the whole country might vote in presidential elections, but now it usually votes for the Republicans. Trump got eight percent more votes than the other candidate in the state in 2016 and 2020. However, there are indications that the state might be more likely to succeed in 2024. Last year, the majority of people in Ohio voted to make sure that abortions stay legal and also voted to allow marijuana to be used.

Biden is going to Nevada and Arizona on Tuesday. These states were very close in the last election and are still very important for both campaigns.

Trump and Biden are talking about the things they have done while in office and saying the other person is dangerous for the country. Trump, who is 77 years old, says that Biden, who is 81, is not mentally capable. The president said his Republican opponent is bad for democracy because he tried to change the election and he likes foreign leaders who are very powerful.

Those ideas were clear on Tuesday at a few voting places.

Trump supporter Linda Bennet, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida near Mar-a-Lago, says President Biden doesn’t know how to tie his shoes anymore.

She agreed with Trump about Biden’s arguments, but she doesn’t like the way Trump talks and acts. She thinks Trump keeps his promises and makes the country feel strong, especially the economy.

Brenda Woodfolk, a Democrat from Columbus, Ohio, voted for Biden and agreed with the president’s views on the upcoming election.

“It’s frightening,” she said about the possibility of Trump being president again. Trump wants to have all the power and control, and he talks about making America only for white people. It’s all nonsense. “There is too much hate happening. ”

Bennet and Woodfolk both think immigration is really important, but they have different reasons for why they feel that way.

Bennet, a Republican voter, said the border issue is really bad. “I believe the government is purposely bringing in these people to change things for their own gain, and it’s making me very angry. ”

Woodfolk, the Democrat, said she is okay with immigrants having the same opportunities in the US, but she’s concerned that it might make things harder for people who have been here a long time.

Trump and Republicans have strongly criticized Biden for the large number of people coming into the US from Mexico. They are trying to use this issue to their advantage, even in states that are not near the border. Biden has been fighting back more lately, after Senate Republicans stopped a deal on migration that they had agreed on with the White House. They only did this after Trump said he didn’t like the deal. Biden says Trump and Republicans don’t want to fix the problem, they just want to make voters angry for the election.

Trump has been dealing with legal problems while trying to become president for the past year. He has dozens of criminal and civil cases and could owe over $500 million in fines.

He was going to trial for hiding hush money payments by faking business records. The trial was supposed to start on Monday in New York. However, the trial was postponed for 30 days because new evidence was revealed and Trump’s lawyers needed time to look over it.

NPP firmly rejects proposal to shield experienced MPs in primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) dismisses proposals to protect seasoned Members of Parliament (MPs) in the upcoming primaries, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values.

The response follows comments by Kwame Ayimadu-Antwi, MP for Asante Akim Central, expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s perceived lack of support for experienced lawmakers.

While NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, acknowledges the worth of considering measures to safeguard experienced MPs, he underscores the need for careful evaluation to prevent compromising the democratic foundations of party primaries.

“The allegation that somebody is orchestrating somebody, that is just talk for people because maybe one thing is against them or the other. That should not be part of the conversation. But is it the expectation that the party should create a certain system? I think that I agree but my worry about that suggestion is what system is it and to what extent is it going to impact the basic allowance of democracy to prevail,” he remarked.

Further highlighting the potential advantages of open competition, Richard Ahiagbah suggested that it guarantees the selected candidate has the strongest public support and acts as an incentive for performance.

“If it is a system and arrangement that will affect a true and true practice of democracy then that will not be the system we want,” he added.

No MP to run unopposed in primaries – NPP Greater Accra Regional Secretary issues warning

Daniel Parker Odarlai France, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), delivered a stern warning, declaring that no sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) will be permitted to run unopposed in the upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Mr. France stressed that this decision aims to rectify past mistakes that contributed to the party losing numerous seats in the last general election. Contrary to any perception of protection for certain MPs, he clarified that there was no directive from higher authorities to that effect.

The regional decision is based on the party’s commitment to ensuring a competitive internal process.

Instances where MPs like Moses Anim and Tina Mensah went unopposed in the last primaries would face contests this time, emphasizing the need for hard work as no one will be protected. The recently concluded primaries in some orphan constituencies justified this approach, despite acknowledged complaints.

Mr. France mentioned Dr. Oko Boye’s case, assuring a comeback and highlighting the importance of healthy competition within the party.

He cautioned against stepping on people’s toes, emphasizing the region’s commitment to unity for victory in the 2024 election. The warning was issued during an appearance on Atinka TV on Saturday, December 9, 2023.

The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, made this known today after she met agents of all the three flagbearer hopefuls of the NDC; John Mahama, Dr Duffuor, and Kojo Bonsu.

According to the EC Chair, her outfit will only supervise the upcoming primaries after the current legal issues hovering around the primaries are resolved to prevent being cited for contempt.

Dr Kwabena Duffour has filed an interlocutory injunction application against the party’s upcoming primaries.

Dr Duffuor wants the primaries halted over some alleged discrepancies his team has identified in the party’s voters register.

In a writ filed at an Accra High Court, Dr Duffour indicated a partial photo album register given to his team on May 4, 2023, by the party recorded the number of constituencies at 220 as opposed to the alleged number of 228 constituencies currently being indicated.

He stated that verification of the 220 constituencies established basic errors and inaccuracies that render the Photo Album Register inaccurate and unreliable for a free, fair and credible elections.

Ahead of the suit, Dr Duffuor requested for a postponement of the elections until a full photo album register is secured.

Meanwhile, responding to the claims, Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says the accusations levelled against the party have no basis.

  • It’s unfair leadership supports Mahama but I’m not discouraged – Kojo Bonsu

One of the three presidential aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Bonsu, has faulted the leadership of the party of the decision to rally their support behind former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Mr Bonsu, who once served as the Mayor for Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, it is against the party’s rules for its Executives to declare support for a candidate running for a position.

“I’m doing a decent campaign. My issue is that the party has rules and the election regulations say that when you are an executive, you cannot support one person because you are part of the leadership of the party.

“But these things they are doing are wrong. Someone who wants a position would place his/her sticker alongside his contender and that’s not fair. Everybody is doing what they like, is that democracy,” he quizzed in an interview with Kumasi-base OTEC FM on Tuesday, May 9.

Former President John Mahama, former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor and Mr Kojo Bonsu want to participate in the 2024 Presidential elections on the ticket of the NDC.

Despite the current situation in the party, Mr Bonsu says he remains resolute in his efforts to emerge victorious.

According to him, such endorsement does not win elections as the NDC failed to win the 2016 general elections albeit millions showed support.

“I’m not discouraged, no way. I’m still focused, I’m a serious person. It doesn’t discourage me because, during the 2016 elections, there was a big rally in Accra, millions of people were there but after the elections were over, we lost over one million votes.

“So things like this do not frighten me,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Duffor has filed an interlocutory injunction at an Accra High Court to halt the primaries scheduled for May 13, over “faulty voters register.”

Dr Duffuor files injunction application against NDC primaries

Dr Kwabena Duffour, a flagbearer candidate for the National Democratic Congress, has filed a lawsuit against the party over what he claims are errors in the party’s voters registration to be utilized for the election.

Dr Duffour alleged in a writ filed at an Accra High Court that the party failed to deliver the required picture album register five weeks before the elections, as specified in the party’s rules.

He added that his team received a partial photo album register on May 4, a few days before the polls, rather than in March, when they requested one.

“The Plaintiff adds that to their utmost surprise, upon verification, it was found that the number of constituencies on the hard drive given to his representatives was 220 in number as opposed to the alleged number of 228 constituencies indicated by the Defendant,” he stated.

“The Plaintiff adds further that an initial verification of the said 220 constituencies on the hard drive given to his representatives by the 2nd Defendant established basic errors and inaccuracies that render the Photo Album Register inaccurate and unreliable for a free, fair and credible elections.”

Kwabena Duffour seeks injunction against NDC primaries

Dr Duffour added that despite his request for a postponement of the elections until a full photo album register is secured, the party has failed to heed his request.

Thus, he is asking the court to grant an interlocutory injunction to restrain the party and sued persons – General Secretary, Election Director, co-contestants John Mahama and Kojo Bonsu, and the Electoral Commission – from holding the elections scheduled for May 13.

This is “pending the production of a complete and accurate photo album register and delivery of same to the Plaintiff and other Presidential aspirants of the National Democratic Congress at least five weeks ahead of the elections as per grounds deposed to in the accompanying affidavit and for any further orders the Honourable Court may deem fit.”

This comes after Dr Kwabena Duffuor, on May 9, asked the party to postpone its upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries scheduled for Saturday, May 13.

The party rejected the plea, while some officials accused his team of bad faith.

Mr Kofi Obeng Mensah, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) aspiring parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North, has secured insurance cover for 360 delegates in the Constituency from SAHAM Insurance Ghana Limited to cater for their welfare.

Out of the 417 delegates in the Constituency, the 360 took advantage to enroll. The beneficiaries include constituency and polling station executives.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, Mr Obeng-Mensah said the gesture formed part of his plans to mobilise the grassroots to sustain power for the NPP in the 2020 election.

He said elections were won at the polling stations, therefore, the polling station executives must be empowered to deliver on their mandate.

“Those at the polling station level have been underserved hence the need to turn more attention to their problems and give them the needed support for the constituency to improve,” he said.

Mr Obeng-Mensah said the polling station executives sometimes found it difficult to mobilise funds to foot their hospital bills and support marriage and funeral ceremonies among other things, hence the need to enroll on the life insurance package.

He said having interacted with the polling station executives for over two years and also understudied their plight, he and his team had come up with a policy dubbed; ”Grassroots First, Community Assured”.

He indicated three thematic policies to champion the grassroots mobilisation, which are grassroots welfare scheme, job search and job creation, and logistics and logistical improvement.

  • NPP primaries: Executives demand Philip Addisons reinstatement

Over four hundred polling station executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Akropong Constituency of the Eastern Region are to petition the National Executives of the party over the disqualification of Philip Addison and William Agyei Twumasi from the parliamentary primaries.

Their disqualification has left the incumbent Member of Parliament, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah as the sole runner in the upcoming primaries.

The two were part of 15 aspirants disqualified out of the 79 vetted in the Eastern Region.

Addressing the media after a march on the streets of Akropong Wednesday, March 11, 2020, the aggrieved delegates and supporters said the incumbent MP has become unpopular within the party and among the electorate at large and therefore would be suicidal for the NPP to impose her on the constituency.

The press conference addressed by Dr. Eric Danquah called on the National Vetting Committee to allow all three aspirants to contest the primaries. They contended that Mr. Addison has been contributing immensely to the party in the constituency describing as unturnable claims that he has not natured the party well.

They warn that the failure to reverse the decision of the vetting committee will lead to apathy in 2020.

“It is with deep regret that we the delegates who have signed this petition say to your office that if you do not as soon as possible consider our petition by reverting this dangerous decision to disqualify Mr.Philip Addison, we would be left with little option, but we shall determine which person should represent us in the next four years from this constituency. We shall only be available to work hard for the party only if there is a fair contest”.

However, in a swift rebuttal, the Constituency Organizer Emmanuel Appienti has discredited the signatories on the petition claiming majority were secured through deception.

He accused the popular lawyer of attempts to cause confusion in the constituency akin to what happened at Korle Klottey in Accra in 2016 leading to the defeat of the party in the constituency.

  • Asante-Akim Central NPP youth invade party office over nomination forms

Some youth belonging to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality, on Monday massed up in front of the Constituency Office of the Party to protest the alleged refusal by constituency executives to make nomination forms available for aspiring parliamentary candidates.

Clad in red and chanting war songs, the placard-wielding group calling itself “Concerned NPP Youth” vandalized the metal door of the office and set ablaze posters of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Kwame Anyimadu Antwi.

They are accusing the constituency executives of scheming to allow Mr. Anyimadu to go unopposed by frustrating two other aspirants from accessing the nomination forms.

This is the latest protestation over alleged denial of access to nomination forms to interested aspirants of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, they said.

The last couple of weeks has witnessed such disturbances in the Bekwai and Mampong Constituencies of the NPP.

The angry protesters feared the situation if left unchecked, could lead to voter apathy among Party members in the Constituency and thus affect the fortunes of the NPP in the upcoming general elections.

According to the Asante Akim Central protesters, the executives had deliberately created an artificial shortage of the forms, yet they could not mention even one aspirant who had picked a form apart from the incumbent.

They, therefore, vowed to resist any attempt to protect the incumbent whom they accused of doing little to improve the lives of the people after serving two terms.

Two aspirants who have expressed interest in contesting in the forthcoming primaries are Mr. Ofosu Nkansah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Accra Digital Centre and one Nana Agyemang, a banker by profession.

Sources from the Party in the Constituency say all efforts by the two to pick the forms at the Constituency, regional and national levels have proved futile and accused the executives of employing flimsy excuses to deny them the forms.

Mr. Nicholas Adu Berko, leader of the group, said they embarked on the action to bring the issue to the attention of the hierarchy of the Party after all efforts to compel the executives to do the right thing did not yield any results.

He said the NPP was a democratic Party that adhered to democratic principles, hence the action of the executives was a clear violation of the Party’s constitution.

He, therefore, appealed to the Regional and National leadership to intervene as a matter of urgency, to ensure sanity in the Constituency.

Failure to do so, he noted, would compel them to support any independent candidate who emerges from the Party.

Speaking on the behalf of polling station executives, the electoral area coordinator for Binde, Chempong Iddrisu said, the decision to declare love, commitment, and support for the Regional Minister is based on observation and evaluation of the perspectives and agendas of the various candidates in the upcoming elections.

According to him, the MP has been tried, tested and proven to be the best bet for the constituency and it is for this reason that they are declaring and endorsing “him as their parliamentary candidate for election 2020”.

He described Mr Boar as someone who has acquired a great deal of experience of dealing with local politics and also earned respect from the public as well as lawmakers and Government officials at large.

    NPP B Solomon Boar

“Honesty, pragmatism and selfless dedication to duty and humility, and hopeful insights into our constituency’s problems and needs coupled with your willingness to examine the issues and listen closely to the general public concerns of Solomon Boar, sets him far apart from other candidates’ expected techniques and talk,” Mr Chempong stated.

The constituency secretary who represented the executives, Paul Louknaan also said Mr Boar has worked effectively in parliamentary affairs for the past seven years and brings excellent credentials to the position.

In response, the MP thanked the delegates and said it was another opportunity for members of the party to rally behind him to maintain the seat for the NPP.

He promised more jobs for the youth and urged residents of the newly created region to trust President Akuffo Addo and his administration to bring rapid development to the area.

“I can assure every tom, dick and harry, that Nana means well for this country,” he said.

Reacting to the open endorsement, other aspirants indicated that the actions of the constituency executives go contrary to the party’s regulations that bar election committee members from declaring support for or promoting candidates and have called on the party’s regional executives to act.

An aspirant, Dr Francis Tingoti told JoyNews he expects the party executives at the regional level to bring down sanctions on the constituency chairman and his team.

Mr. Tingoti, who is a Finance officer at the Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale, described Saturday’s episode as “populism” and mind games” which will attract no attention from him.
