  • You can’t destool me, you’re not a king maker – Asaman-Tamfoe chief dares Okyenhene

The Benkumhene of the Asaman-Tamfoe, Nana Boakye Darkwa, has denied allegations of involvement in illegal mining and pointed out that the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, broke traditional norm by destooling him.

He has, therefore, dared Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II to provide evidence of his allegations.

“If Okyenhene has concluded that I am an illegal miner, then I urge him to report me to the relevant national and appropriate institutions for redress,” he stated in a rebuttal press conference on Thursday, December 1.

“I have never been into mining. In 2018, I was adjudged the Best District Cocoa Farmer in Atiwa West. I can therefore not renege on this honour by encouraging the desecration of cocoa farms.”

About a month ago, the Environmental Task Force of the Okyeman Traditional Council clashed with residents of Asaman-Tamfoe on allegations of illegal mining.

The Benkumhene, Nana Boakye Darkwa, held a press conference to deny his community members were involved in illegal mining and accused the Taskfoce of failing to do due diligence.

He was subsequently summoned by the Okyenhene over the issues arising from his press conference and alleged involvement in illegal mining and later destooled.

But during his address to the press, Nana Boakye Darkwa said Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Panin II cannot destool him and denied allegations of his involvement in illegal mining.

“The community members formed groups of miners and were allotted parcels of land, resulting from an MoU the community signed with Xtra Gold Mining Ltd to mine. This irked the traditional authorities who consequently orchestrated the ransacking of their sites and impounding of their equipment with some workers arrested in Rambo fashion. A press conference exposing the dastardly and cowardice actions of the Okyeman taskforce angered the overlord.”

He added: “As part of Corporate Social Responsibility agreement between the community and Xtra Gold, some monies were paid by the miners lodged in a credited account in the name of the community. Asaman-Tamfoe recognising and acknowledging the throne of Ofori Panin gave out GH¢115,000 on 7th October 2022 to the Ofori Panin Fie, disbursement as follows; Abontendomhene GH¢10,000, Osagyefo GH¢100,000.00 [and] Drinks GH¢5,000.”

The Benkumhene, who doubles as the 2018 Best Cocoa Farmer for Atiwa West, says Okyenhene’s destoolment does not hold.

“The Okyenhene broke traditional norm by decreeing that he had destooled me because as Omanhene, he is not a king maker. But in this case, he has now assumed that position hence the numerous chieftaincy issues bedevilling the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.”

He gave explanation to pictures making round of him prostrating before Okyehene.

“I did not prostrate as a sign of remorsefulness or of guilt but as sign of rendering an undeserved reverence because considering the venue of the gathering, any form of resistance and an insistence on not being guilty would not have resulted in any peaceful reactions. I am still the de-facto Benkumhene of Asaman-Tamfoe.”

  • Okyenhene wants galamseyers arrested as GWCL Shuts down Kyebi treatment plant again

The Ghana Water Company Limited has shut down its Kyebi Treatment Plant due to high turbidity as a result of the continuous pollution of river Birim by illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers.

This was made known by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, during a courtesy call on him by the Association of Small-Scale Miners.

The Okyehene called for the immediate arrest of illegal miners operating in Kyebi and its environs.

The Overlord of the Akyem Abuakwa State added that the recklessness of illegal miners who are mining day and night in the Birim river is posing a health risk to all residents in the enclave.

He described the illegal miners as criminals who must be arrested by the IGP and the Ghana Police Service to face prosecution.

Okyehene who bemoaned the lack of supervision of water bodies over the years in the fight against galamsey called for the retooling of the inspectorates division of the Minerals Commission and other responsible agencies in both human and logistical capacities to help achieve the needed results.

  • ‘Villagers, witches’ comment: Can Okyenhene please keep quiet? – NDC lawyer

Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, a member of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) legal team, made a statement on contentious remarks allegedly made by the Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin.

The Osagyefo has been quoted as saying that anyone who attack President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are either village children or witches or wizards.

Edudzi disagrees with the statement and believes that the chief would be better off remaining silent rather than insulting people.

The lawyer shared a video of the said comments with a caption that read:

“Can this chief be quite small? Your family member has destroyed this beautiful country and you are talking down and insulting people. Please keep quiet.”

The family member in question is President Akufo-Addo who is related to the chief. Akufo-Addo is currently battling with a twin crisis of illegal small-scale mining, alias galamsey, and an economic downturn.

The Okyenhene whiles making comments at a church service attended by the President over the weekend spoke about the two issues, defending the president over the economic downturn and citing global events.

On galamsey, he tasked chiefs to stand up to the task of rooting out the menace and not to look at short-term financial considerations and bequeath a long-term crisis to generations.

    The Okyenhene’s controversial comments:

“We must appreciate the feat of the President and show him [some] appreciation for what he has done for Ghana. We must defend and protect him,” he said.

Okyenhene stated categorically, ”those insulting the President are children of villagers. They are uncivilized. No well-nurtured person will insult an elderly. If you were raised in the Church, you will not insult an elder. If you are not a villager then you may be a witch or wizard.

“Not all will like you. Even Jesus Christ was crucified. It won’t bother me if they speak with sincerity but when you speak with hate, witchcraft, and envy, you must be careful because one day! one day! one day! one day!

“One day! the truth will overcome evil lies and envy,” Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II added when he spoke at the inauguration of the Archdeaconry Service held at the St. Martin Anglican Church in Kyebi on Sunday, October 23, 2022.
