  • 2022 World Cup: Ghana sweating on Richard Ofori’s injury ahead of tournament

    Ghana are holding their breath over Richard Ofori’s fitness after the goalkeeper was removed from Orlando Pirates’ squad to face Kaizer Chiefs due to injury.

    With just 10 days to the global showpiece, the 29-year-old will hoping to recover in time as Ghana coach Otto Addo is set to name his final 26-man squad on Monday, November, 14, 2022.

    Orlando Pirates have confirmed that Ofori will miss their semi-final game alongside defenders Thabiso Monyane and Innocent Maela in the Carling Black Label Cup.

    Ofori has been named in the 55-man provisional squad for the World Cup. His impressive performance for Pirates this season has seen him fight for the number one spot in Ghana’s squad with Joe Wollacott, who features for League One side Charlton Athletic.

    Black Stars have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

    Ghana will take on Portugal in their first game on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

    Black Stars will play Switzerland in an International friendly on November 17, before travelling to Qatar for the World Cup.

  • I’m focused on Orlando Pirates now; it’s the most important thing for me – Richard Ofori

    Richard Ofori, a Ghanaian international player, has emphasized that his club is always his top priority.

    The highly regarded shot-stopper claims that he will always start for Orlando Pirates because it is his performance there that would even secure him a spot on the national squad.

    Richard Ofori stated he is only concentrating about the Soweto Derby versus Kaizer Chiefs while speaking at a Pirates media event in Northern Johannesburg.

    “The Orlando Pirates are the most significant factor since you work with your team on a regular basis.
    Based on your performance at your club, the national team will select you.

    “I’m not really thinking about the national team at the moment. If you are not fit and doing well at your club then the national team is useless,” Richard Ofori said.

    The goalkeeper only recently recovered from an injury setback and should be back in post for the much-anticipated Soweto derby.

    The clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will be played on Saturday, October 29. Kickoff is at 1:30pm.

  • Ghanaian defender Edwin Gyimah named MOTM

    Edwin Gyimah was named Man of the Match after an impressive performance for Sekhukhune in the win against Orlando Pirates in the South African PSL.

    The midfielder was in action on Tuesday afternoon for his team when they locked horns with their matchday opponent in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.

    Orlando Pirates player Thabiso Monyane was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 59th minute.

     

    Elias Mokwana scored in the 84th minute to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

    Vusimuzi Mncube scored the game’s second goal late in the added time to make it 2-0 at the end.

    Edwin Gyimah played full throttle for Sekhukhune and was named man of the match after the game.

  • Orlando Pirates pushing to sign versatile Edmund Arko-Mensah

    South African giant, Orlando Pirates are doing everything to sign talented Ghanaian attacker Edmund Arko-Mensah to bolster its squad for the upcoming football season.

    After a good campaign in the Premier Soccer League last season, Pirates have set sight on fighting for trophies in the 2022/23 season.

    As a result, the club has kept its top players and also worked on bringing in quality players to augment its squad.

    After six signings already, Orlando Pirates now want to sign Ghanaian winger Edmund Arko-Mensah.

    The club is impressed with the versatility of the Ghanaian youth player and wants to secure his services from Finnish club FC Honka.

    If the deal is completed, Edmund Arko-Mensah will join compatriots Richard Ofori and Kwame Peprah to become the third Ghanaian at the South African club.

  • Richard Ofori should be Orlando Pirates captain, says ex-skipper Edward Motale

    Former Orlando Pirates skipper Edward Motale has said Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori should be named the new captain of the international club.

    According to the Daily Sun, Edward Motale  believes Richard Ofori has garnered enough experience and would be able to lead Orlando Pirates.

    “If I have to be honest, I am not a big fan of goalkeeper captains. But now Ofori can lead Pirates. He has the experience and he’s an international player. I have seen him communicating with players and also shouting (on the pitch),” he said.

    “A captain needs to be someone vocal is the right man for me,” he continued as quoted by the Daily Sun.

    Ahead of the start of the 2022/23 football season of the South African top-flight league, several players have been chosen for the captaincy role of the club.

    Besides Richard Ofori, Thabang Monare, Thembinkosi Lorch, Olisa Ndah, and Ben Motshwari are being considered for the captaincy at Orlando Pirates.

    One will be chosen to replace Happy Jele who has left the club.
