  • NPP Primaries: Police officer prevented from voting in Navrongo Central Constituency

Constituency executives in Navrongo Central have stopped a Police officer from casting his ballot in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

The Officer (name withheld) is a delegate but had the opportunity to train and serve in the Ghana Police Service this year.

The officer who arrived at the Adabayeri Primary School center, dressed as a civilian, was prevented by party executives with reason that he was ineligible.

The executives explained that his current position as a law enforcement officer was in contradiction with the constitution of the party.

According to them, the said officer’s name had been removed from the register. But checks by GhanaWeb showed that the name of the officer was still in the register.

The incident developed into a near-chaos one as he resisted and protested.

But the timely intervention of the Navrongo Municipal Police command doused tensions.

  • NPP Primaries: ‘I’m in to win’ – Tangoba Abayage brags

Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage, has expressed strong optimism in winning the Navrongo Central Parliamentary primary.

According to her, contrary to the perception that her candidature was to test the waters, her decision to contest the primary was to challenge herself.

She added that her excellence in managing the region, 19 months into her appointment as Minister was an indication of her capability and was very hopeful the delegates would massively endorse her bid to win the Parliamentary slot.

Speaking to GhanaWeb after monitoring the voting process, Ms. Abayage said, “I haven’t done badly as a regional minister. If I have been able to manage the region this far, one year and seven months in office, why can’t I manage a constituency”.

  • NPP Primaries: Avoid the thought of going independent – Boakye Agyarko to losing candidates

Former Energy Minister and current Chairman of the ER Reconciliation Committee of NPP, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has advised candidates who will lose in today’s primaries to discard any mindset of going independent.

He said the thought of going independent after losing a contest is a wrong thing to do.

“It means that you have an unbridled and an inordinate ambition,” he said.

Speaking to Ghanaweb during his visit to some voting centres in the New Juaben South Constituency, Mr. Agyarko said, for a candidate to go independent means he or she did not accept the rules.

“If you did not accept the rules, it means that you should not have contested to begin with.

“The rules are laid out and if you felt the rules were not fair then you should not have contested. But to go through the contest, accepting the rules and then turn round and say I’m going independent is much of certain insensitivity,” he stressed.

Mr. Agyarko urged losing candidates to dust off their shoes and get back to serve the party since there are so many ways of serving the party in diverse capacities.

“So, I will urge all candidates who lose in this contest to avoid the thoughts of going independent, stay within the fold of the party, work hard, and then wait for another time for another contest,” emphasised.

Voting has ended in almost all the centres in the New Juaben South as electoral officers are only waiting till 1 pm before counting begins.

The primaries have been calm generally with all the centres observing strictly the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

Veronica buckets filled with water with availability of soap and sanitizers are strategically placed and all voters were directed to wash their hands before being allowed to cast their votes. After casting their votes, they are giving sanitizers to sanitize their hands before leaving the voting centre.

Over one thousand delegates of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region have approved the candidature of Mr. Paul Essien, to contest the party’s parliamentary seat in the upcoming General Elections.

Mr. Paul Essien who is the sitting MP and the Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs was overwhelmingly endorsed by a popular acclamation by the delegates on Friday, June 19, 2020.

His acclamation followed a decision taken by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party to disqualify his two main contenders namely; Mrs. Christine Komba and Mr. Paul Hopeson Kwaw from contesting him.

The NDC in 2016 lost the Jomoro Parliamentary seat to the NPP for the first time since 1992.

Mr. Paul Essien won the seat for the NPP with 18,694 represented 39.49%. as against the NDC candidate, Mr. Thomas Yankey who pulled 14,241 represented 30.08%.

In this regard, the NPP’s NEC saw the need to allow the Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Paul Essien to run unopposed as an appreciation for winning the parliamentary seat for the first time for the party in 2016.

Before the popular acclamation, the NPP in Jomoro Constituency was divided into two camps of which some supporters of the incumbent MP called on President Akufo-Addo to sack the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area for allegedly sabotaging the MP.

But, speaking to the delegates on Friday, June 19 at Half Assini, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Ernest Kofie who was the Constituency Chairman for the party in 2016 called on the delegates and party supporters to bury their differences and rally behind the incumbent MP Paul Essien to retain the seat.

He, therefore, seized the opportunity to urge the close followers of the MP to be mindful their communication not to give problems to the MP.

He said the NPP could not afford to lose the seat to the NDC in the coming general elections.

Mr. Ernest Kofie also called on the party faithful to work hard for President Akufo-Addo to governing this country for eight years as the NDC was given the opportunity to serve this country for good years.

He, however, hailed the incumbent MP for chalking success in the Constituency.

He said the MP had proven to the whole the Constituency that if giving another chance he would do more.

He, therefore, pledged to collaborate with the MP to develop the area.

On his part, the incumbent MP Paul Essien pledged to bring all aggrieved party members on deck to maintain the seat for the party.

He said he was ready to work with all NPP members and ready to accept all aggrieved members.

He stated that interest of the party should be their first priority and thanked those who supported him financially in 2016 to claim the Jomoro Parliamentary seat for the first time in the history of Ghana’s politics.

    New voter’s register

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area Mr. Ernest Kofie charged the NPP supporters to involve themselves in the exercise and asked them to be vigilant during the exercise.

He said the compilation of the new voter’s register should be embraced by all Ghanaians.

He assured his teeming supporters that the party would not allow foreigners to be registered and decide for this country.

The Jomoro NPP Parliamentary acclamation brought all the Constituency Executives together as a sign of cohesion.

Apart from Jomoro Constituency, aspirants in Evalue-Ajomoro Gwira, Prestea Huni-Valley, Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Sekondi and Essikado-Ketan Constituencies are contesting unopposed.

  • NPP man regrets curses in river

One of the four New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the Juaben Constituency that cursed their party leaders in a river has regretted his weird action.

Ransford Osei, an NPP Polling Station Executive at Juaben Anglican, and three other party members did the unthinkable by cursing their party leadership recently.

The four aggrieved party members had complained bitterly that their political idol had unfairly been disqualified from the upcoming NPP parliamentary polls at Juaben.

Instead of following laid-down party rules to make their voice heard, the four party members rather slaughtered a sheep in a river at Juaben to deal with some NPP leaders. As a result, Mr. Osei and the three other party members have since been suspended by the party to serve as a deterrent to other party members with a similar mindset.

He has now regretted his action and admitted that they had no right to call on a river deity, slaughter a sheep and rain curses on their party leaders no matter how badly they thought their man was being treated.

Speaking on radio, Mr. Osei said he had learnt his lessons, for which reason he would never stoop low by invoking curses on his party leaders in future. He said that, ideally, he and his group should have used the laid-down rules of the party to drum home their grievances, admitting that the decision to curse was in bad taste.

Sounding like someone that has turned over a new leaf, Mr. Osei admonished NPP members in the country not to emulate their reprehensible action in future.

According to him, it is important for party members to always respect and act according to the laws of the party, so that they would not find themselves in trouble.

He said the party was right to suspend them, stressing that he had decided to use every opportunity he would get to educate his party members to be tolerant and disciplined.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that the Juaben Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region had fined Mr. Osei and the three other NPP members 12 sheep for invoking the curse in contravention of traditional rules.

“I think that it is a bit childish when somebody says your father has done it so you should not do it. Nobody started off saying this is a legacy that should be given to me,” she said on the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News.

Her father, Kwamena Bartels, was elected MP for the Ablekuma North constituency in 1996 and served for three terms.

  • Youre a joker if you promise development as an MP – Frimpong Addo jabs

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Manso Adubia constituency, Mr. Yaw Fimpong Addo has suggested the decision of his only contender in the upcoming parliamentary primaries, Kofi Osei-Afoakwa could be of selfish motive.

The MP speaking on his chances and whether he was scared of any threats ahead said the former constituency chair who resigned to contest him, may not have any positive mindset for contesting him.

The legislator said his contender lacks understanding of parliamentary work hence goes round promising development when it is not the duty of an MP.

He has, therefore, advised him to focus his attention at the District Assembly and fight for the position as DCE if he wants to lead the development agenda.

Mr. Frimpong Addo in an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm stressed ”if you are promising development then your place is not parliament. Parliament is a place for lawmakers. If you are lucky and lobby for a project, you send it to the assembly and so, candidates who promise development when contesting as MPs are jokers.”

“It is a figment of your own imagination if you promise constituents to build them clinics, roads and other projects when contesting as an MP. That is not your job. The district executive projects even if you are the one who lobbied for them,” he added.

Party delegates he said are now wiser than before and will not accept just promises.

The MP disclosed he would have happier if he had gone unopposed since it would have cut down his cost.

“If he had expressed interest in contesting me, I would have relaxed and invested the resources in other activities. But now there is a competition and I have to live with it.”

The NPP will go to the polls on June 20, 2020, to elect parliamentary candidates.

The primaries are expected to be held at the electoral areas and not the previous format whereby all the delegates met to vote at one place.

The statement also confirmed that President Akufo-Addo has been accepted as the flagbearer of the party for the 2020 presidential election.

  • My delegates are loyal, I don’t fear them – Obour

Former President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour, who is aspiring to be elected as the member of parliament for Asante Akyem South constituency on the ticket of NPP has said he is confident that his delegates will not disappoint him in the upcoming primaries.

The NPP has slated its presidential and parliamentary primaries for Saturday, June 20 this year and already the party’s Parliamentary candidates have been pitching their campaign messages to the delegates.

Obour is poised to contest the sitting Member of Parliament for the constituency, Kwaku Asante Boateng but since votes by delegates cannot be predicted, the question then arises does Obour fear his delegates?

“Fear delegates” is a coinage by Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie aka Sir John, a former NPP General Secretary, and a term to describe the unsteady behaviour of political party delegates.

The popular term was associated with Sir John after he suffered an overwhelming defeat in the NPP primaries in 2014 although he had unflinching support of his delegates.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s morning programme ‘Kokrokoo’, Bice Osei Kuffour told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that he is absolutely certain of his victory in the primaries.

He explained that before he disclosed his interest in contesting the Asante Akyem South Parliamentary seat, he had already been behind the scenes working with the party delegates to improve the livelihood of the residents in the community.

He noted that he has built a strong relationship, cemented on goodwill, with the delegates and expressed confidence in his delegates describing them as trustworthy.

He strongly believes they will vote massively for him during the party’s primaries.

“They have promised to vote for me and since they’re dependable, I know they will honour their word to bring me victory.”

Obour further emphasized that he has “no fears because of my relationship with them. And looking at this year’s primaries which will be held at the electoral areas according to the leadership of the NPP, I know of some electoral areas in my constituency that, for instance, have six delegates and I know a number of the delegates who call me often to tell me how they adore me.”

“So, it is when we go for the primaries and I get only one out of these six delegates to vote for me that will tell me to fear the delegates just as Sir John said but should I get a good result, then I will know they’re trustworthy. But my delegates at Asante Akyem South are very loyal”.

  • NSS boss not responsible for stalling development in Yagaba/Kubori – NPP

The North East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sulley Sambian has refuted claims that the Chief Executive Officer of the National Service Secretariat, Yussif Mustapha, is behind the delay of payment to Tass-kalia Construction Ltd to complete a two-year road contract on the Yagaba/Kubori/Mankarigu road.

The road work which covers a distance of 36km from Yagaba to Kubore, and then to Wiase was to ease the discomfort that came with the bad road in the area.

According to Sulley Sambian, Yusif Mustapha is at the forefront of fighting for the development of his people and not sabotaging the project as stated by the opposition.

He instead accused the Member of Parliament for Yagaba Kubore Constituency, Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim, who he claimed failed to go back to the site after receiving GH¢8 million from the coffers of the Road Fund.

Sambian, alleging that the activities of Tass-kalia Construction Ltd, is controlled by the MP, also revealed that failure by the MP to return to the construction site agitated the youth in the constituency making them embark on a series of demonstrations.

This, he added, led to him [Tanko Ibrahim] being summoned at the Kubore Chief’s palace. While being interrogated on the matter, Sambian indicated that the MP denied receiving the said amount insisting that he received a part payment of about GH¢3 million and not GH¢8 million as reported.

However, following the delay, government terminated the contract with the MP and re-awarded it to another firm called Mawums Company Ltd, the NPP Secretary disclosed.

Sulley Sambian, in a release said “the new contractor went to site only to be confronted by thugs operating at the instance of Honorable Tanko. The Honourable MP has since resumed operations on the site under the pretext of executing a project that has been terminated, forcing the new contractor to move out of site for fear of his life.”

The NPP Secretary is, therefore, appealing to the security agencies to pay keen attention to the unhealthy development in Yagaba to prevent a breach of the peace.

    Below is his full statement

TERMINATION OF TASSKALIA CONTRACT AND MATTERS ARISING BACKGROUND: In August 2016, the government of Ghana awarded a contract to TASSKALIA Ltd, a company whose mind is directed by the Member of Parliament for Yagaba Kubore Constituency. The contract had a life span of two years and covered a distance of 36 kms from Yagaba to Kubore, and then to Wiase.

Following the inability of the company to promptly execute the project, the Government of Ghana through the Ghana Highways Authority reviewed the project to cover a distance of 12 Kilometers from Yagaba to Kubore

During the period, Honourable Tanko presented two certificates for payment totalling about 11 Million cedis. The Government of Ghana through the Road Fund honoured payment to the tune of about 8 Million Cedis.

Upon receipt of the payment, Honourable Tanko failed to go back to site, prompting the youth of the Constituency to embark on series of demonstrations. The matter eventually got to the Kubore Chief’s palace where Honorable Tanko admitted to a part payment of about 3 Million Cedis, a figure the NPP disputes.

The NDC in the North East Region, realising that their MP would court bad publicity for himself quickly released a pathetically lame statement accusing the NPP parliamentary candidate for Yagaba Kubore, Honourable Mustapha Ussif, of sabotaging the efforts of Honourable Tanko, and masterminding a grand scheme to have his contract terminated.

The Regional Secretariat of the NPP promptly issued a rejoinder daring Honorable Tanko to deny payment of the amount of about 8 Million to him by the Road Fund. Whilst the challenge was yet to be taken by Honorable Tanko, the Government of Ghana terminated the contract and re-awarded same to Mawums Company Ltd. Two days ago, the North-East Regional Minister, handed over site of Tanko’s abandoned and terminated project to Mawums Company Ltd. Yesterday, the new contractor went to site only to be confronted by thugs operating at the instance of Honorable Tanko. The Honourable MP has since resumed operations on the site under the pretext of executing a project that has been terminated, forcing the new contractor to move out of site for fear of his life.

As an honorable member of parliament, the conduct of Tanko is extremely unparliamentary. He has a duty to inculcate a culture of civility in the people he he seeks to lead. He has a duty to lead by example.

Do we really have to remind Honourable Tanko that the courts exist to give vent to civil rights and to enforce contractual obligations? If he feels his contract was wrongfully terminated, his recourse is the court, not this Rambo style. He must equally be reminded that, one man cannot be recipository of violence. The earlier he understood this for all of us to live harmoniously, the better!.

As a Region, we remember ingloriously, the physical attack Honourable Tanko meted out to a colleague member of parliament few years ago. It was bad enough; a replication of this conduct in his constituency cannot be the price the people have to pay for the undeserved honour of making him their member of parliament. At least if it is not a blessing, it must not be such a glaringly bad fortune. Macho theatrics as a means of ventilating rights is no longer even practised by lesser animals! Posterity will definitely not look kindly at us if we plunge our region into avoidable chaos and conflict. If the regional NPP had not timeously intervened, violent clash would have erupted in Yagaba.

We are aware of Tanko’s schemes to cause confusion in Yagaba. We are equally aware of the late hour meeting he held with some youth of the NDC in other Constituencies from the region last night. A meeting which started from 10 pm till 2 a.m. this morning!

Honorable Tanko appears to be giving little thought to danger. It is called foolhardiness.

We appeal to the security agencies to pay keen attention to the unhealthy development in Yagaba to prevent a breach of the peace.

    Thank you

    Sulley Sambian

  • Declaring Akufo-Addo flagbearer without election undemocratic, inappropriate Agbodza

Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described as “inappropriate” the decision of the New Patriotic Party to declare President Akufo-Addo its candidate without an election or Congress even if he had no competitor.

The NPP last week said it accepted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the flag bearer of the party for Election 2020 and will declare him as the flag bearer of the party for the 2020 polls.

The General Secretary of the party, Mr John Boadu, announced this to the media after a National Council meeting of the party Wednesday night [June 3, 2020].

According to him, the National Vetting Committee of the party reported to the National Council that at the close of nomination, it was only President Akufo-Addo who had filed to contest as the flag bearer of the party.

Although the National Council accepted the report and in due time the President will be declared as the flag bearer by popular acclamation, Mr Agbodza said that was “not democracy”.

He was speaking on New Day on TV3 where he took the NPP to task for not showing they are real apostle of democracy as “they claim”. According to him, there should have been an election for the party to decide whether they are satisfied with the bad performance of Akufo-Addo. He said it was not too late for the party to “do the right thing”.

The NPP and the NDC have been trading accusations over who is most ready for the upcoming election. The NPP say the NDC has no running mate while the NDC says the NPP has no flagbearer for the 2020 poll.

  • NPP directs suspension of members who invoked curses on leadership

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu, has directed constituency executives of the party to suspend all persons who claim to have invoked curses on the party leadership on allegations that their preferred candidates were disqualified from contesting the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Mr Boadu addressing a press briefing Monday said the party was completely appalled by “such gross misconduct”.

“The party has observed, rather worryingly, the conduct of some members claiming to be invoking curses on the party’s leadership and in particular, on members of the NEC [National Executive Committee] on allegations that their preferred candidates have been disqualified by NEC from contesting in the primaries. We are completely appalled by such gross misconduct,” Mr Boadu said.

“Accordingly, the party is instructing the respective constituency executives in the constituencies where this unfortunate incident happened, to immediately suspend all those involved in this awkward behaviour while instituting appropriate disciplinary actions against them in line with Article 3 and 4 of the Party Constitution”.

    Background

About 300 NPP supporters in the Juaben constituency of the Ashanti Region on June 5 , 2020 defied Covid-19 safety protocols to demonstrate against the disqualification of their preferred aspiring parliamentary candidate.

They were protesting what they described as a party decision to allow the MP for the area, Madam Amma Pomaa Boateng to run unopposed in the NPP primaries.

They also slaughtered sheep and invoked curses on any member of the party leadership whose actions would result in the disqualification of their preferred candidate.

Similarly, some party members in the Tano North constituency, where Freda Prempeh was the Member of Parliament also invoked curses on the leadership of the party for allowing Freda Prempeh to re-contest the primaries unopposed.

  • NPP suspends all cursing delegates

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has instructed constituency executives to suspend, with immediate effect, all delegates who invoked curses on leadership over the disqualification of some parliamentary aspirants.

These delegates of the party resorted to invoking deities to register their dissatisfaction with the national executives for not allowing some aspirants to contest and others to be contested.

According to some of them, the grounds for disqualification of some of these aspirants were not legitimate and just a move to ensure that incumbent Members of Parliament, in particular, go unopposed.

In the Offinso South Constituency, for instance, some delegates slaughtered a ram in River Offin and performed some rituals after they complained that the National Vetting Committee is scheming to have incumbent MP Ben Abdallah Banda go unopposed.

But addressing a press conference on Monday, June 8, General Secretary John Boadu said all those delegates stand suspended.

He said the party will not countenance such behaviour and the necessary sanctions will apply.

The primaries are scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 20 across the country but only in constituencies where the NPP has sitting MPs

  • PLAYBACK: NPP gives details on its upcoming Parliamentary primaries

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding a press conference to give details on its upcoming Parliamentary primaries.

  • Wa Central: Hajia Humu’s campaign gets boost as Party Chair apologises to MCE

The campaign of Hajia Humu Awudu, the Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Wa Central Constituency, has received a major boost following a public apology to the Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) by the Constituency Chairman of the party.

Chairman Ali Abdul-Kareem Kunsangpou Kamara and Alhaaj Issahaku Tahiru Moomin, the Wa MCE, were said to be at each other’s throat since the NPP took over the reins of governance.

This was evident in the acrimonies thrown at each other by their admirers and well-wishers given the least opportunity especially, during the party’s elections to elect their executives and the last Parliament Primaries that saw the MCE’s third bid to represent the party in Wa Central at the 2020 polls hit a snag, losing out to Hajia Hummu, a first-timer.

With the emergence of Hajia Humu as the Parliamentary Candidate coming from the camp of the Chairman Kamara who was not in the good books of the former Parliamentary Candidate of the party and MCE of the Wa Municipality, many political pundits became very skeptical about her chances of wrestling the seat for the elephant family for the first time.

But the recent demeanor of the MCE in partaking in the programs of the Parliamentary Candidate has given hope to the party and political watchers alike in the constituency, that this was likely to ensure unity in the party ahead of the general elections in December 2020.

Even more heartwarming and assuring is the constituency chair’s move to offer the MCE an unqualified public apology today, Thursday, June 4, 2020, on Radio Progress, a Wa-based community radio transmitting on 98.1 Megahertz, in a rare show of political maturity.

Speaking to Muniru Ibrahim (IB), the host of the Morning Show Program, Chairman Ali Kamara apologized in very vivid terms to the MCE, Alhaaj Issahaku Moomen, without mincing his words, for all that might have happened between them in the past. He said it was time they buried the hatchet, came together with their sympathizers, unite and work to enhance the fortunes of the party while consolidating their gains as well.

According to him, it would only take collective efforts to chalk the much-needed success for the party and therefore wanted all hands on deck to ensure this is achieved since no one individual alone can bring that success to the party.

Commenting on the developmental strives of Hajia Humu, the Parliamentary Candidate, Chairman Ali Kunsangpou Kamara, taunted her many developmental achievements such as her women’s livelihood empowerment programs, the provision of educational scholarships abroad, the resurfacing of some roads within the municipality, the provision of boreholes, among others.

He claimed that it was due to these unprecedented developmental agenda by Hajia Humu that has made it impossible for the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpou, to remain in the capital for long as he hitherto did, without rushing back to the constituency for visibility.

Chairman Ali Kamara was also full of praises for Dr. Hafiz Bin Saleh, the Upper West Regional Minister, in coordinating the affairs of the region and for ensuring the smooth running of the party.

  • Angry NPP youth vandalize party office over disqualification of Emmanuel Kotin

Some aggrieved youth of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Saboba Constituency in the Northern region have vandalized the NPP constituency party office.

In the early hours of Saturday June 6, the youth were seen breaking louvre blades, burning car tyres amidst chanting of war songs.

This follows the disqualification of Emmanuel Kotin, a security analyst, from contesting the Saboba NPP parliamentary primaries schedule for June 20.

In a 2:28 minutes video which is in circulation, some of the youth were seen asking the National executives of the party to explain why Emmanuel Kotin was disqualified.

They blamed the Defence minister and Member of Parliament for Bimbila constituency Dominic Nitiwul for masterminding the disqualification of Mr. Kotin.

They said, the party will see more of such aggression if they fail to reinstate Mr. Kotin just as they have done in other constituencies.

They gave the party three days to reinstate their aspirant or they will go any length to disorganize activities of the party..

As at the time of filing this report, no arrest was made despite the matter being reported to the Saboba Police.

The police have since visited the area with some party executives to assess the extent of damage.

Efforts to get the party leadership to speak to the issue yielded no positive result.

Emmanuel Kotin was disqualified by the vetting committee chaired by Sammy Awuku in February this year.

  • MP for Gushegu painfully withdraws from NPP primaries

The Member of Parliament for Gushegu in the Northern Region, Dr. Ziblim Iddi has formally written to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on his decision to pull out of the upcoming parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs.

The primaries originally scheduled for April 25 was postponed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The NPP set June 20 as the new date for the election following the easing of restrictions on public gathering by President Akufo-Addo on May 31.

But Dr. Ziblim Iddi, who is also the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, in a letter dated June 4 addressed to the General Secretary of the NPP expressed the difficulty of his decision to step down.

“I arrived at this painful decision after a very broad consultation and deep introspection,” he said in the letter.

He copied Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chief of Staff at the Office of the President and National Campaign Manager of the NPP in the letter.

He has therefore asked the party to withdraw his application and delete his profile on the Notice of Poll and ballot paper for the elections.

  • NPP NEC clears disqualified aspirants

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the green light to some disqualified aspirants to contest its parliamentary primaries slated for June 20, 2020.

Most of the candidates in Greater Accra, Western North and Ashanti regions seeking to contest their incumbent Members of Parliament were disqualified by the regional vetting committees.

But NEC, after listening to their appeals, declared them eligible to contest in the elections.

However, some of the decisions taken by the vetting committees were also upheld.

    Below is the full list:

    Greater Accra Region

NEC upheld the recommendations of the Vetting Committee in respect of all the aspiring candidates. The decision by the appeals committee to clear the opponent of Moses Anim in Trobu, Edward Addo, who was initially disqualified by the vetting committee was thus reversed

    Western North

NEC reversed the decision of the Appeals Committee to disqualify former BOST CEO, Alfred Obeng in the Bibiani Constituency. He has therefore been reinstated as per the verdict of the vetting committee that initially cleared him

    Western Region

NEC upheld all the decisions of the Vetting Committee

    Northern Region

NEC approved the decision of the vetting committee to disqualify Emmanuel Kutin, the Security Analyst in the Saboba Constituency, but reversed the decision to disqualify Osman Mahama in the Saboba Constituency. So the Deputy Tourism Minister, Iddi Ziblim, will not go unopposed.

    Ahafo Region

NEC upheld the decisions of the vetting committee for all the candidates

    Central Region

All the decisions of the Vetting Committee upheld, except that in respect of Evans Coleman of Agona West. So the gender minister will be contested by one other person, and not two.

All decisions of the vetting committee upheld. The opponent of the health Minister disqualified in the Dormaa Central

    Eastern Region

All the decisions of the vetting committee upheld by NEC

Subin JB Danquah cleared by NEC

Manso Nkwanta- Hon Grace Addo, the former MP disqualified by NEC

Kwadaso Hilda Addo disqualified by NEC

  • Supporters of disqualified NPP MP invoke curses on party executives

Some governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Juaben Constituency of the Ashanti Region have invoked curses on the national executives of the party for disqualifying their preferred candidate from contesting in the parliamentary primaries.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the party, according to the aggrieved delegates who spoke to Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah, disqualified Mr Francis Owusu Achiaw, their preferred candidate and another aspirant without any tangible reason, to pave the way for the incumbent MP, Ama Pomah, to go unopposed.

The delegates, numbering over 200, do not understand why Mr Francis Owusu Achiaw has been disqualified because, according to them, he successfully got vetted in Kumasi.

Unhappy with the circumstances of the disqualification, the delegates wore red armbands and marched to a river called “Asuo Abena” located at Nobowam in the constituency with schnapps and a sheep to invoke curses on anyone who was involved in disqualifying their candidate especially, Mr F.F. Anto, the first national vice-chairman of the party.

  • North East Region NDC calls for calm as confusion escalates among Nalerigu/Gambaga NPP

As tension continues to mount within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency, following the suspension of a parliamentary aspirant, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for calm.

A statement signed by the North East Regional Communication Officer of the NDC, Imoro Abdul Razak, says the call for peace follows recent confusion that rocked the NPP in the new region.

“The verbal tirade, although their stock in trade, being unleashed on each other by their parliamentary candidates has succinctly demonstrated the NPP undemocratic nature,” it read.

“The near clashes between supporters of the suspended aspirant, Peter Baaga and the Local Government Minister Hajia Alimah Mahama sent a signal of bad omen in the region”, the NDC admonished.

The statement added that, although the escalating confusion and chaos within the ruling party is not strange, the NDC appreciates peace and will urge the NPP to show leadership and respect the people of the North East Region.

The NDC also described the incidents leading to the suspension of  Peter Baaga as a clear manifestation of poor leadership and the apparent intolerance currently being exhibited by the Akufo-Addo led administration.

The statement, therefore, called “on the Elders of the NPP to reach out to the warring factions of suspended Aspirant Peter Baaga and Local Government Minister Hajia Alima Mahama to get their commitment to end the vicious circle of heightened tensions in each election that features the duo.”

The NDC in the region also says it has noted the shocking confessions of election rigging and smuggling of fertilisers and other farm inputs to neighboring countries by executives of the ruling party made by Peter Baaga for which reason he was sanctioned.

“The NDC knows and recalls painfully the damning revelations on Tizaa Fm by Peter Wuni Baaga (now suspended aspirant) i.e The NPP in collaboration with the EC, rigged the 2004 parliamentary election for Hajia Alimah Mahama, and President Kuffour in the constituency. The NPP Regional Chairman criminally diverted fertilizer meant for the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to Burkina Faso for a private purposes et al and we will soon contact the appropriate authorities to act on that,” the party hinted.

The opposition party praised “the candor of Mr Peter Wuni Baaga for openly applauding President Mahama and the NDC 2020 parliamentary candidate for having worked on the road network in the East Mamprusi Municipality which has since infuriated the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.”

“In conclusion, the NDC in the light of the foregoing, calls on the NPP National Leadership to take over the affairs of the NPP in the Region for it is on autopilot.

The NDC needs peace to conduct its activities with decorum and to explain to citizens of the region the failed and corrupt practices of the NPP. And the need for change.”

Confusion erupted in the ruling party in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency following months of tension between supporters of a former District Chief Executive, Peter Wuni Baaga, and the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Alimah.

Divisions emerged publicly last Thursday following the suspension of Peter Wuni Baaga, a former District Chief Executive and a founding member of the party in the area, after an interview, he granted in response to allegations made against him by Hajia Alimah Mahama and some members of her campaign team, including the regional chairman and the Municipal Chief Executive.

Peter was said to have been accused by Hajia Alimah of stealing and diverting public funds while in office as District Chief Executive and also disrespecting President Akufo-Addo.

The former DCE, who then fired back, accused Hajia Alimah of rigging the 2004 elections that took her to parliament for the first time. He also accused the Local Government and Rural Development Minister of betrayal and witch-hunting him.

Two days after his response, the regional chairman, Nurudeen Fuseini, issued a letter announcing the suspension of the aspirant from the party.
Some supporters of the party in the constituency have however rejected the suspension which they have described as “unconstitutional” and a breach of the fundamental human rights of the aspirant.

They have threatened to stage protest in support of the suspended aspirant. Meanwhile, some 75 members of the party in the constituency have already left to join the opposition NDC, citing the incompetence of the Member of Parliament and the growing confusion in the party.
