  • My vote is for the NPP aspirant who can beat Mahama in 2024 – Akufo-Addo

My vote is for the NPP aspirant who can beat Mahama in 2024 – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed his commitment to backing any aspiring flagbearer from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who can effectively unite the party and secure victory in the upcoming presidential elections next year.

In a tweet on Wednesday, August 2, he disclosed that he, like all polling station executives nationwide, has the privilege to vote for a single aspirant.

This statement was made during his meeting with NPP communicators at the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo noted that he will cast his vote for an aspirant who he believes can “inflict a third successive defeat on the perennial NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.”

Furthermore, he highlighted the historical precedent of the ruling NPP, emphasizing that the party’s tradition has consistently rejected the notion of a president imposing a candidate. He underlined that the NPP has always steered clear of cultivating a cult of personality.

“The history of the NPP tells us that no President can foist a candidate on the party against its wishes. The NPP is not that kind of party. We have never subscribed to a cult of personality,” he said on Wednesday, August 2, when he met NPP communicators who called on him at Jubilee House.

“Indeed, our highly-respected former President, the first NPP President, John Agyekum Kufuor, in the aftermath of my election as NPP Presidential Candidate, by the 2007 National Congress, told the Congress that ‘the party has its spirit’, a spirit that cannot be ignored.”

Catherine Afeku abandons Alan, calls for ‘Skirt and Blouse’ voting in NPP Primaries

A senior member of Alan’s Campaign Team and a parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira constituency, Catherine Afeku, has encouraged delegates to exercise their right to vote ‘skirt and blouse’ in the upcoming NPP Presidential and Parliamentary primaries.

Speaking to party supporters after picking nomination forms, Madam Afeku urged the constituents to cast their ballots for her as their Member of Parliament (MP) while also endorsing any Presidential candidate of their choice vying for the NPP flagbearer position.

She highlighted the significance of local representation and emphasized that the role of an MP is paramount when it comes to addressing the day-to-day concerns of the constituency.

“When you come to the constituency, does the president come here? When you’re sick, I’m the one in the constituency to take care of you and not the presidential aspirant or president. When I win, I will go to Parliament, and the President goes to Jubilee House,” Catherine Afeku stated.

She passionately urged them to vote for her as the MP while exercising their discretion to support any Presidential aspirant they believed would best lead the party.

“If you support Presidential candidate A or B, it’s not part of the constituency election, so you can choose me as your parliamentary representative and vote for any Presidential aspirant you want. Don’t let anyone intimidate you into thinking otherwise,” she told the gathering.

  • Eugene Arhin to contest Awutu Senya West seat in NPP primaries

Eugene Arhin to contest Awutu Senya West seat in NPP primaries

Director of communications at the office of the President, Eugene Kofi Bentum Arhin, has announced his plans to contest the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Awutu Senya West Constituency in the Central Region.

He made the announcement in a Facebook post on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Although poised for victory, Mr Arhin noted that he would accept a result that indicates otherwise following and fair election.

According to him, his “commitment to ensuring the constituency returns to the fold of the NPP in 2024 is unwavering.”

The official announcement came a day before the NPP closes its nominations for ‘orphan’ constituencies. Nominations were opened on June 16 and close on July 14, 2023.

The people of Awutu Senya West are currently represented by Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui who sides with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The upcoming NPP primaries is slated for November 4, 2023.

Nominations for constituencies with sitting MPs will be opened from December 20, 2023 to January 4, 2024. Elections will be held on February 24, 2024.

The New Patriotic Party has barred its National, Regional, Constituency Party Executives as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from contesting incumbent MPs in the upcoming Parliamentary primaries.

It is believed that barring MMDCEs from contesting sitting MPs will curtail any party division.

  • Underdogs win all the time – Kwabena Agyepong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong says he remains unperturbed about not being considered a front runner in the party flagbearer race.

While launching his 2024 campaign at the Silicon Production House at Tesano, Mr Agyepong noted that he is poised for victory irrespective of the assertions of individuals and projections made by relevant authorities.

“Underdogs win all the time, it happens so don’t worry that I’m not seen as front runner,” he said.

The latest July 2023 national poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a 3% lead among all voters to emerge as the preferred candidate for the NPP in the 2024 election following the launch of his campaign.

The poll indicates that 36% of voters prefer Dr. Bawumia, while 33% prefer Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten (AKK) and 25% prefer Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (KOA).

Among NPP voters, Dr. Bawumia leads with approximately 50%, followed by Mr. Kyerematen with 33% and Mr. Agyapong with 16% of the vote.

In the event of a runoff among NPP voters, Dr. Bawumia leads Mr. Kyerematen by 55% to 45%. However, among all voters, Mr. Kyerematen leads Dr. Bawumia by 54% to 46%.

Despite this projection, Mr Kwabena Agyepong believes his plan to usher Ghanaians into a new era where there is a downsized government, law enforcement, a vibrant public sector, among others will win the votes of electorates.

  • NPP flagbearer elections: Bawumia, Alan, one other face vetting panel today

NPP flagbearer elections: Bawumia, Alan, one other face vetting panel today

Ahead of the highly anticipated primaries of the New Patriotic Party, a comprehensive vetting roster has been unveiled by the party to assess and evaluate the candidates vying for various positions.

According to a statement issued by Secretary to the National Presidential Vetting Committee, Evans Nimako, the vetting will take place from today, July 3, 2023, to July 6, 2023.

The first batch of candidates to face the panel today includes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan K Kyerematen, and Energy Expert Kwadwo Poku.

Dr. Bawumia is making his first attempt to vie for the NPP flagbearer position, after serving as the running mate and Vice President under President Nana Akufo-Addo for two terms.

Mr. Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash, has attempted to vie for the NPP flagbearer position twice in the past. The first time was in 2007, during the party’s primary elections for the 2008 general elections. The second attempt was in 2014, when he contested for the NPP flagbearer position ahead of the 2016 general elections. This becomes his third attempt to vie for the position.

Mr. Poku is a newcomer to the NPP flagbearer race, having declared his intention to contest earlier this year.

The second day of the vetting will see three more aspirants appearing before the committee. They are former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The remaining aspirants will undergo the vetting on July 5 and 6. They are former Food and Agriculture Minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former MP for Asante Mampong Edward Addai-Nimo, Economist Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey.

The vetting process is part of the NPP’s preparations for its presidential primary, which will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general election.

The party has appealed to all presidential aspirants to respect the timetable and participate actively in the vetting process, which is crucial for assessing their visions, policies, and plans for the country.

As of now, 10 candidates have successfully filed their nominations for the flagbearer race. However, only five candidates will make it to the final round of the vetting process.

During the vetting process, aspirants are provided with an opportunity to showcase their visions, policies, and developmental plans for the country to the National Presidential Vetting Committee of the NPP.

The presidential primaries, according to the party, will take place on November 4, 2023.

  • Babgin never predicted Bawumia as winner of NPP primaries – Parliament clarifies

Babgin never predicted Bawumia as winner of NPP primaries – Parliament clarifies

The Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament has refuted reports suggesting an endorsement by Speaker Alban Bagbin for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s primaries.

During a courtesy call on the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale, at his residence in Damongo, the Speaker revealed the possibility of Ghanaians having to choose between two northerners to lead the country in the 2024 election.

“This is the time that the two main parties in Ghana are both deciding that the flagbearers will be our sons from the North. What I plead with all of you is for us to accept our differences and see how we can come together to prepare to receive the development that is coming our way.”

This statement, Parliament said has been misconstrued.

According to Parliament’s Public Affairs Directorate, although the Speaker made reference to the two politicians at the said event, it was not an exercise in prediction.

The Speaker is said to have suggested that what should be of interest to the people in northern Ghana, in which context he was speaking, is that they will be well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them.

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker explained that despite political differences, we are one people with a common destiny. Our common goal therefore should be to work towards the common good of all Ghanaians, irrespective of our political differences,” a statement from Parliament noted.

  • Presidential staffer endorses Alan Cash as Ghana’s next president

Presidential staffer endorses Alan Cash as Ghana’s next president

Presidential staffer, George Atsu Egbenunya, has publicly endorsed former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen as Ghana’s next president.

With a resolute voice, Mr. Egbenunya urged members of the party to rally behind Kyerematen in its bid to break the eight-year power rotational cycle.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Egbenunya emphasised his deep-rooted connection to the party as the son of the late R. K. Egbenunya, a founding member of the party from Hohoe Bla.

Drawing upon his extensive experience within the party, including serving as a deputy regional youth organiser in the Volta Region, constituency organiser for two terms, youth organiser for one term, and an elected assembly member for the Bla electoral area, Mr. Egbenunya highlighted the importance of Kyerematen’s leadership in guiding the party towards victory.

“After being in politics for 25 years, you know it is Alan Kyerematen who can lead the party to break the eight,” stated Mr. Egbenunya.

Citing his understanding of the inner workings of the party, he stressed the urgent need for unity and endorsement of Kyerematen to secure success in the upcoming elections.

Alan Kyerematen, renowned for his experience in the field of trade, industry, and investment, has been widely regarded as a formidable contender to lead the party.

Mr. Egbenunya praised Kyerematen’s leadership qualities, strategic vision, and proven track record, which he believes make him the ideal candidate to navigate the complexities of the economy and pave the way for sustainable development.

As the race to break the eight-year cycle intensifies, endorsement from the likes of George Atsu Egbenunya may bolster Kyerematen’s campaign and attract further support especially in the Volta region where the only cabinet minister from that part of the country, John Peter Amewu was also recently seen campaigning for the former Trade Minister.

Endorsement of the main candidates underscore the growing momentum behind them and sets the stage for a spirited political contest within the party.

As the nation watches closely, it remains to be seen how this declaration of support will impact the dynamics of the party and the broader political landscape.

  • Withdrawal of 2 MP contestants from NPP primaries, here is why

Withdrawal of 2 MP contestants from NPP primaries, here is why

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the Kumawu seat has stated his unwillingness to participate in the upcoming election.

Yaw Baah indicated this following his approval by the vetting committee for himself and some 5 others to contest the seat out of 8 persons who had picked up nomination forms.

In a statement, Lawyer Baah indicated his plans to expand his ‘political breath’ to the national front rather than limit himself to Kumawu.

According to him, he projects a bigger role in NPP’s vision to ‘Break the 8’ and wants to work towards that.

“Having considered my political status and pedigree within the larger family, I have come to the conclusion that the last atom of my ‘political breath’ should be at the disposal of the national front, rather than at the periphery of Kumawu,” he wrote on Thursday, April 20 to the chairman of his party’s by-election committee.

“I see myself as a great player in the scheme of things as far as ‘Breaking the 8’ mantra is concerned. I believe the interest of my beloved Kumawu will be better served, if I stay outside and help unify our party in the Constituency,” he said.
Mr. Baah’s close contender in the 2020 elections, Private Legal Practitioner, Edward Osei has also withdrawn from the race.

Addressing the media on April 19, 2023, Mr. Osei who had dual citizenship from both Ghana and the United States of America (USA) said his decision to withdraw follows concerns by his party – NPP, about his renunciation.

Mr. Osei who had begun processes to renounce his U.S citizenship however said the process would have been completed before the set date by the Electoral Commission for him to prove his eligibility.

“To prove my eligibility to contest in this by-election, I will have to prove that by May 5, 2023, which is about 2 weeks from now, and therefore under the law and the constitution of Ghana, no one could have disqualified me during the vetting. On April 4, 2023, I started the process with the US Embassy to begin the renunciation process.

“I was supposed to have my final interview for renunciation today (19th of April 2023). I also received an email from the USA, the overseas Citizens bureau that once I finish my renunciation process and all goes well, I will have my certificate of renunciation within 3 working days meaning that, by April 24 or 25, I would have received my certificate and have enough time to complete my documentation before the EC deadline of May 5,” he said.

Mr. Osei however noted that he had been massively supported for the position while apologizing to his supporters who may be disappointed by his decision.

“Data indicated that I had the majority of the support of delegates. In addition, at a meeting held just last week, the constituency executives, patrons, and council of Elders, endorsed me as their preferred candidate for this primaries. This they did due to my hard work in the constituency and the love and support I have built with the delegates.

“I also want to apologise to the people of Kumawu and all the thousands of my supporters all over the world who wanted to see me as MP,” Mr. Osei said.

Meanwhile, Yaw Baah has endorsed Obaatanpa Serwaah who is also in the race as a preferred candidate. Mr. Osei on the other hand has thrown his support for all other candidates vying for the position of Kumawu Member of Parliament.

The NPP plans to elect its candidate for the May 23 by-election following the death of Philip Basoah.

  • We will lose our jobs if NDC wins 2024 elections – School Feeding Caterers

We will lose our jobs if NDC wins 2024 elections – School Feeding Caterers

According to some caterers of the School feeding Programme in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region they are likely yo lose their jobs should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) be ousted from power.

Dorothy Ofori-Sarpong, who provides meals for school children in basic schools in the region in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday claimed that all caterers in the region are bonafide members of the NPP.

According to her, there is no way they will be retained if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wins the 2024 elections.

She added that it is a known fact all current caterers must be members of the NPP.

Making a point for arrears owed them to be paid, Dorothy Ofori-Sarpong said caterers in the region have sacrificed for long, and it is time the government pays attention to their plight.

“We know that when the NDC wins power, we will all lose our jobs.,” Ofori-Sarpong told host Bernard Avle adding “All of us are members of the NPP”.

Dorothy also slammed the Ashanti Regional Minister for disrespecting them when they besieged his office to demand payments for their arrears.

She revealed that they have not been paid for three school terms and caterers have virtually run out of funds.

The caterers who are calling on the government to pay them their arrears and also increase the amount expressed their disappointment with the Regional Minister over how he received them.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah has justified his reason for reacting angrily to caterers under the government’s school feeding programme in the Ashanti Region when they presented a petition to him on Monday, April 3.

Speaking to the media however, Mr Simon Osei Mensah insists that the caterers did not follow due process and were protesting at the Regional Coordinating Council which compelled him to react the way he did.

“I was in a meeting yesterday when I heard some noise outside the office, and so I sent my special assistant to find out, and he came and told me it was caterers protesting outside. They did not even seek security clearance before demonstrating, so you can imagine what would have happened if the security personnel at the Regional Coordinating Council had reacted to them”.

“We must be truthful to ourselves in this country and stop pampering people because impunity is too much. Though I sympathise with the caterers, we should not allow people to break the law in their attempt to have their problems solved. We should solve our problems through legal means. You can’t just take the law into your hands and do what you want because I will not tolerate that.”

NPP Primaries: Akufo-Addo is not to blame for unfixed date – Nana B clarifies

National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party, has cleared the air on rumours that President Akufo-Addo is hampering the party from conducting an early congress.

Mounting a strong defence for President, he contended that Mr Akufo-Addo is not to blame for the party’s inability to set a date for its primaries.

According to him, such choices are made by the national executive committee of the party and not by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview with Neat FM, Nana B stated that, the national executive body must take into account all proposals before deciding on a date for the stated election because there have been a variety of views and perspectives expressed over the party’s election.

“I don’t have to buy them at all , I condemn such posts and views . Under no circumstance should anybody attribute this to his excellency the president . It is very unfortunate and I condemn it as the national organizer.

“…Look, these processes are democratic and gives room for everyone to share their opinions. This is extensively consultative. So it is very unfortunate for people to be making unfounded claims,” he said.

It maybe recalled that some party members including a political scientist Dr Amoako Baah accused President Akufo-Addo of personally hijacking the party’s bid to hold an early congress.

According to them, the president is preventing a possible switch of attention from himself and his government to the new candidate to be elected as flagbearer and that he is doing everything possible to delay the elections.

  • Parliament to meet on limping Fomena MP Haruna Iddrisu

Haruna Idrissu, the Minority Leader in Parliament, says leadership of the house will meet in the coming days to determine the status of Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

This is after the New Patriotic Party wrote to Parliament to notify it of the withdrawal of the membership of Andrew Amoako Asiamah who has decided to contest the December 7 elections as an independent candidate amid protest by leadership of the ruling party.

Mr Iddrisu says Parliament is threading cautiously on the matter due to its complex nature.

He stated in a Joy FM interview that the case is being studied with reference to certain articles in the constitution.

“It is a matter that we are studying carefully with constitutional law advisers. He did not walk in as an independent candidate.

“We will need to find out if being sacked by the party (NPP) makes him an independent candidate,” the Minority Leader told Joy FM.

According to him, due to the complex nature of the issue, “the case is being studied with reference to Article 112 and the provisions of Article 94 to determine his status as an independent candidate or not.”

He said that as things stand, Andrew Amoako is walking on one leg as his position in the house is a matter of discussion among the leadership.

He described Andrew Amoako as a “limping” MP and questioned, “whether he should be recognised as a Member of Parliament on the ticket of the party (NPP).”

“He is walking on a limping leg, for now, he is a limping candidate,” he said.

“When we are conclusive with our findings, we will make known to the public on what they think. That is whether he should be vacating his seat or continue to be an MP,” Mr Iddrisu added.

Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo, the Senior Minister has confirmed that Mrs. Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly called Ama Sey, Member of Parliament for Akwatia constituency is not going to contest in the 2020 elections as an independent candidate.

He said the MP who lost with four votes at the NPP parliamentary primaries, had made it clear that she was not going to contest the 2020 elections as an independent candidate.

The Senior Minister stressed that the loyalty of every NPP member is to the party and its symbol, not to individuals.

Ama Sey caused a stir in 2016 when he contested against Mr Baba Jamal, the then incumbent MP, and a Deputy Minister in the then NDC administration to become one of six MPs in the Eastern Region.

She was, however, defeated by Mr. Ernest Kumi with four votes at the NPP primaries held in June of this year.

  • I got zero vote at where I live in my constituency Kojo Frimpong

Sports Journalist Kojo Frimpong, who wanted to represent the people of Wenchi in Parliament has said, nobody voted for him at where he lives in the constituency where he votes.

“Where I live in Wenchi, the electoral area, I got zero,” he told Paul Adom-Otchere on Good Evening Ghana Thursday.

When asked if he did not vote for himself, Frimpong responded that, at the time of the elections he did not have voting rights.

This, according to him, makes it very difficult to trust the voters when it comes to politics.

“I look at all those who said honourable, we will vote for you and then I got zero out of 14 votes, some places too I got two…it becomes difficult to have a relationship of trust with the delegates,” disappointed Kojo Frimpong said with a sobering voice.

The journalist who was seeking to represent the people of Wenchi in parliament on the ticket of the NPP lost to Prof. George Yaw Gyan-Baffour, the incumbent MP.

Prof Gyan-Baffour polled 172 votes, followed closely by Ameyaw Albert who polled 167 votes. Kojo Frimpong had 148 votes, whilst Tina Abrefa Gyan and Yaw Opoku Atuahene had 61 and 19 votes respectively.

Prof. Gyan-Baffour first won the parliamentary primary in 2004 and has gone on to win in three subsequent elections in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

  • I bear no grudges against Sekyere East DCE who campaigned against me Dr Ayew Afriyie

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Effiduase-Asokore Constituency, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie has said that he is unperturbed by the attitude of the District Chief Executive(DCE) for Sekyere East, Mary Boatemaa Marfo who was recently caught on tape inciting a “skirt and blouse” vote against him in the upcoming elections.

He says though it was unfortunate for the DCE to have done that, he would hold no grudges against her but would rather focus on campaigning and selling his message to the electorate who are clothed with the power to unseat him or give him another four years mandate.

In leaked audio, the DCE was heard in a conversation with a party member threatening to frustrate voters on Election Day which will, in turn, reduce the votes of the NPP and the MP, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie; which subsequently saw the president revoking her appointment.

But days after her dismissal, President Akufo-Addo rescinded his decision to sack Mary Boatemaa Marfo and immediately reinstated her.

The action by the president is believed to have infuriated the chiefs and a section of the people in the area who have threatened to vote against the NPP in the upcoming election.

But speaking with Yaw Nimako on Angel in the Morning monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie pleaded with his constituents to respect the decision by the president and vote massively for the NPP as they always do since that is the surest way for him to secure development for them.

He said that decide to vote against the president, is as good as deciding to vote against him too, urging that they bury their differences and rally behind the NPP for their good.

Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency and Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has said there is the need to change the constitution of the political parties to enable all card-bearing members to be able to vote to elect executives of the party including parliamentary candidates.

He said on TV3s New Day Wednesday, September 23 that this will deepen the democratic credentials of the parties.

“The primaries we hold should not be limited to a small group of people by the polling station agents.

“We should allow all card-bearing members of the party to vote in the primaries. Not to only the NPP alone but also the NDC should also do same.

“If a person is in Parliament, we should look at the contribution of the person. If the person is noted by the leadership of the parliamentary caucus, the leaders can do a report on the individual. If the person is doing well, we can send the assessment to the constituency party and also the constituency part must also submit their report on the individual.

“If there is congruence between both parties claiming the individual is doing well in both Parliament and the constituency, why should the person be subjected to primaries? That entrenches on democracy.

“Every four years, you have to go and bang doors and give the people kola nuts and drinks and envelope to the people as a knocking fees, water testing money and thanksgiving fees after the election. It is sowing the seed of corruption.”

  • My unfair disqualification by NPP made me go independent – Damtse

A disgruntled member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Joseph Kofi Damtse who was disqualified in the parliamentary primaries says his decision to contest the Assin South Constituency seat as an independent candidate was based on how unfair he was treated.

According to him, he was unfairly disqualified even after spending on GHc52,000 on filing fee and development fee during the primaries.

He alleged that some persons at the constituency level have hijacked the party and doing things anyhow.

He told Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the principles and ideologies of the party have been ignored by the constituency executives.

”I was approved, paid my filing fee and was later disqualified without any reason. My money was also not refunded. The disqualification was unfair and unreasonable,” he added.

The candidate is hopeful he will win the polls massively because he is the obvious choice the constituents want.

He said the constituency needs leadership and strong governance to help the area develop.

He wants to work with traditional leaders, assembly members and all other opinion leaders to help the constituency transform.

He also wants to prioritise education, lobby to have more school infrastructure in the constituency, trained teachers and other facilities to help raise great leaders for the constituency.

  • Supreme Court throws out Phillip Addison

The General Legal Council, on Thursday July 30, 2020, dismissed a complaint of misconduct brought against Lawyer Charles Zwennes, by his colleague, Lawyer Phillip Addison.

The Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council upon hearing the complaint laid before it, said that it found no evidence whatsoever of misconduct on the part of Lawyer Zwennes in the ongoing case of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited which is currently pending before the High Court.

The Committee, therefore, threw out the complaint of Lawyer Addison, who had called for Lawyer Zwennes to be sanctioned by the General Legal Council which ensures that lawyers are of impeccable professional conduct.

In the view of the disciplinary committee, the matters giving rise to the complaint lodged by Lawyer Addison against his colleague, were matters before the High Court being hotly contested in litigation, and no act of misconduct on the part of Mr Zwennes, has been adduced, hence no punishment can be imposed on him.

Mr Addison’s complaint lodged against Mr Zwenness, was to find the latter guilty of misconduct, but the committee said it found no such evidence against him.

The General Legal Council decision was verbally delivered.

However, aside the decision of the Disciplinary Committee, the Supreme Court, also dismissed a certiorari application filed by Mr Addison to stop the High Court from delving into his dealings with Merlin.

The High Court can now look into the reported cases of forgery of documents at the Registrar General and how he became a secretary to the lottery company registered by Eric Gbeho and Peter Nkegbe, and going into its bank accounts.

Mr Addison was, therefore directed by the Supreme Court to return to the High Court and participate in its proceedings, where he has been sued for falsely holding himself out as the Company Secretary without having been duly appointed as such.

However, Mr Addison continues to be restrained from holding himself out as Company Secretary of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited or from operating its bank accounts in that capacity, until the final determination of that suit.

This year, The Herald broke the news on alleged falsification of documents at the Registrar General’s Department by a client of Mr Addison, lead counsel for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 election petition case, leading to his appointment as secretary of a company called Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited, operators of an SMS lottery, under some bizarre circumstances.

In possession of The Herald are several documents from the Registrar General’s Department, painting a sorry state of affairs in that vital state department which is supposed to protect companies’ records, as well as the interest of their owners.

The issue is currently a huge matter being investigated by the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Registrar General’s Department.

Indeed, an application to have Lawyer Charles William Zwennes jailed for Contempt of Court by an Accra High over the matter, could not be heard because Justice Gifty Adjei Addo, said to be a younger sister of Samuel Atta Akyea; Minister for Works and Housing, was reportedly indisposed just when the session was to begin.

Also in the custody of this paper are court records, documents from two law firms, as well as complaints to the General Legal Council, demanding disciplinary actions against two legal practitioners; Philip Addison and one Denis Adjei Dwomoh for falsely holding themselves as Company Secretary and Company Lawyer of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited, respectively.

However, among all the documents, those from the Registrar General, showed how persons with ulterior motives could walk in and obliterate documents in that Department, change ownership of companies and addresses, fake signatures, alter owners’ dates of birth and appoint officers without board resolutions. These doctored documents are then used to gain access to funds lodged in banks belonging to the companies.

The Herald’s information is that the Police CID is closing in on Francis Tachie Menson, not only on the forgery of documents of Merlin Ghana at the Registrar General’s Department, but the appointment of his lawyer, Philip Addison as Company Secretary and Denis Adjei Dwomoh as Company Lawyer, although there had not been board meetings and resolutions to that effect.

Messrs. Eric Gbeho and Peter Nkegbe, who have been identified as the real owners of Merlin Gaming with 50percent shares each, have denied the involvement of Mr Tachie Menson in their company, as well as board resolutions appointing Philip Addison and one Denis Adjei Dwomoh.

But interestingly, Lawyer Addison in his capacity as Company Secretary, wrote to Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited, warning the bank against allowing the signatories to Merlin Gaming Company account which includes, Lawyer Charles Zwennes.

However, one of the documents in the possession of The Herald is dated December 19, 2019 and addressed to The Registrar-General, Mrs. Jemima Oware, titled “Complaint of forgery & falsification of documents of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited on your register with intent to commit fraud by Francis Edward Tachie Menson Request for an investigation to ensue by the registrar. Section 177(1) (E) of Act 992”.

The letter written on behalf of one of the shareholders; Eric Gbeho in his capacity as Board Chairman and Company Secretary of Merlin Ghana, said “this complaint is made against Francis Edward Tachie Menson and its terms are that over the course of a yet unspecified period, he has committed various acts of forgery and falsification of documents filed in your department with the intent of defrauding the company and its members”.

The letter signed by Charles William Zwennes in his capacity as Solicitor for Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited, as well as Eric Gbeho, referred to Francis Tachie Menson, as a culprit, saying he had “embarked on this criminal enterprise by firstly inserting his name onto the Regulations and subscription page of the company as a director and subscriber of 8,000 shares, hoping thereby to hold himself out as a majority shareholder with the hope of enjoying in the pecuniary fortunes of the company”.

It further disclosed that Merlin Gaming “is currently engaged in negotiations of a settlement of a contract claim made by it against the National Lottery Authority, and expects to receive a settlement sum of GHC15, 000, 000, 00 in lieu of a damages claim for breach of contract. Through this means of perpetrated fraud, Mr. Francis Tachie Menson hopes to claim a major stake of this amount”.

The letter pointed to Mrs. Oware that her “investigations will show that Mr. Francis Tachie Menson has tampered, doctored and falsified the following: 1. The Regulation of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited. 2. The Forms 3 & 4 of Merlin Gaming Ghana Limited. 3. Form 17 Falsely appointing one John Dawonne without due process of board approval”.

It went further to state that “investigations will also show that the said culprit has also taken advantage of the company re-registration exercise embarked upon by your Registrar sometime last year, and submitted re-registration application forms with false information and personal details of the true members and directors of the company”.

Referring to the registration forms, it added that “on these forms as well, the culprit has forged the signature of our client, Mr. Gbeho as Company Secretary several times on Annual Returns for 2016 and 2017, application forms and the like. The falsity of these forms are residential addresses, dates of birth et cetera of the true owners and directors of the company are even wrong and fictitious in many instances. Strangely however, these same documents purport to bear the signature of our client.

The letter informed the informed Registrar General that “through the internal processes of data entry in your Department, this false data has been entered onto your Companies Register, thereby falsely distorting the entire ownership and corporate governance structure of Merlin Gaming Limited to you and unsuspecting persons”.

It pointed out to her “you will also see through your investigation that the said culprit has gone to the trouble of procuring “certified True Copy “stamps imprinted onto some of these doctored documents to create the false impression of authenticity, which is not so”

Mr Zwennes’ letter concluded by asking that “for the sake also of upholding the good name and stringent endeavours that you have made to preserve the integrity and accuracy of your record-keeping department, my client and our firm hereby undertake to offer you every corporation and assistance in your investigations”.

  • A/R NPP on alert after disqualified MP aspirant in Bekwai moves to run as independent

A lawyer, Akwasi Amofa-Agyemang, has declared his intentions to contest the 2020 Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Ahead of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries, he was disqualified from contesting allowing the incumbent, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, to run unopposed.

But following the recent developments, Ashanti Region NPP is rushing to dissuade Mr. Amofa-Agyemang from proceeding with his plans.

The Ashanti Regional Organiser for the NPP, Francis Adumako says, the party will find a solution to the impasse which he described as unfortunate.

“As a matter of urgency, the leaders of the party in the region will call all such people for a meeting and we will see how best we will address issues of this nature.”

Mr. Adumoko said it was imperative such sentiments were quelled before the spread to other constituencies.

“If we allow things of this sort to happen, today, one will erupt from Bekwai. Another one will erupt from a different place and it will go on and on and on.”

Mr. Amofa-Agyemang, announcing his intentions on Tuesday, said his decision was informed by growing calls from constituents for him to go independent following his disqualification.

“After wide consultations of diverse background, I have decided to respond to the persistent calls from the constituents of Bekwai to contest the election as an independent candidate.”

“I do this with mixed emotions; one of disappointment and the other a great sense of responsibility,” he said.

The Parliament hopeful lamented that “all my relentless efforts to contest the elections on the ticket of my party yielded nothing.”

But he said he had “a great sense of responsibility towards our people who have reposed so much confidence in me not to let them down.”

  • Ignore unfounded claims against our PC Lower West Akim NPP

The communication directorate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Lower West Akim Constituency together with the chiefs and elders of Osenase in the Eastern region have refuted claims by members of the Asamankese Concerned Youth Association that the NPP parliamentary candidate, Mr Charles Acheampong does not qualify to represent the party in the constituency.

According to the Asamankese Concerned Youth Association, Mr Acheampong is not a registered voter and does not hail from the constituency, thus, do not qualify to contest as an MP in the locality.

Reacting to this development at a press conference, the NPP communication officer at the Lower West Akyem Constituency, Mr Addo Kwasi Annor described the allegations as “unfounded and unwarranted”.

Mr Acheampong won the NPP primaries to become the parliamentary candidate after beating his closest contender Sintim Aboagye Deputy CEO of the State Transport Corporation and three others.

  • E/R: Disqualified NPP aspirant defies party to go Independent

An aspirant disqualified by the Parliamentary vetting Committee of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Fanteakwa North Constituency of the Eastern Region has declared his intention to contest the 2020 Parliamentary polls as an Independent Candidate.

His declaration comes at the back of warning by the Eastern Regional Executives of the NPP that the party will physically or legally deal with any aspirant who goes independent.

Moro Sakyiama Yakubu was the only contender who was challenging the incumbent Member of Parliament Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah but was disqualified.

The disqualification of the aspirant has since sparked agitation among supporters of the party in the Constituency.

A week ago, over 300 Polling Station and some Constituency executives held a press conference calling on the National Executive Committee of the NPP to reconsider the decision to let their Member of Parliament unopposed.

According to the aggrieved Polling Station Executives, the MP has lost popularity among electorates in Fanteakwa North hence imposing him on the people would be disastrous .

They also threatened to vote skirt and blouse if the decision is not reversed. Nonetheless, the MP was acclaimed over the weekend.

Addressing the media in Begoro on Thursday, June 24, 2020, the disqualified aspirant said he was disqualified purely on tribal basis. He claimed some individuals insisted they will not allow a non-Akan to be MP in Fanteakwa North.

He said claims that he has no academic certificate is palpable falsehood.

“My intention to go as Independent Candidate in Fanteakwa North is based on one or two reasons. when I went to the vetting at the regional level the party did not treat me fairly . In addition to that, I was also related to some irregularities linking me to the major opposition party NDC by my own Constituency executives. In addition to that too, my tribe that is my minority tribe was also used against me. I love Fanteakwa North, I want to serve them, I have made my mind to contest as Independent Candidate so that I can serve my people of Fanteakwa North”.

Moro who is Chief Executive Officer of a gold mining company said, he is ready to face the consequences as a result of his decision to contest as Independent Candidate by his party.

  • NPP Primaries: I’m sad, disappointed Assibey-Yeboah wasn’t protected – Kweku Baako

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has expressed sorrow over the defeat of the Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, in the just-ended NPP primaries.

Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah lost the New Juaben South constituency to his contender Michael Okyere Baafi, the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, who polled 372 votes as against Dr. Assibey-Yeboah’s 200 votes, to clinch a landslide victory.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘kokrokoo’ programme on Wednesday, Kweku Baako Jnr. told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that Dr. Assibey-Yeboah going out of Parliament is a big loss due to his rich experience and competence.

Mr. Baako wondered why the NPP leadership didn’t protect Dr. Assibey-Yeboah like they ensured that some sitting MPs stood unopposed in the primaries.

“I’m sad. I’m disappointed that, at least, he wasn’t part of the core group that was protected,” he said, stressing ”no matter how brilliant and resourceful you are outside Parliament, the very first day you have to learn the ropes. No matter! You may be whoever you are, in terms of resources and academic or intellectual prowess, when it comes to Parliamentary practice; it’s going to take you a while to be able to move and deal with the issues that are brought before you. And some people have gained enough experience so that the new ones coming and definitely, there are new ones coming, a lot of new ones are coming; they’ll need some leadership in the house. So, I’m a bit sad”.

There is high security presence at the Kwadaso Constituency as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds its primary for the constituency.

Regional Youth Organiser, Dennis Kwakwa who led a three member committee to resolve issues of the register say the presence of the men is a precaution.

“You know it is the only constituency pending so we expect a lot of people to come in to support their friends so this is only to keep call here”.

The revised album has 390 delegates compiled with directions from the party at the Regional level.

  • Why didn’t Adwoa Safo go unopposed? – Kwesi Pratt asks NPP leadership

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has rebuked the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for protecting some Members of Parliament (MPs) by ensuring they contested the party’s primaries unopposed.

Sitting MPs in some constituencies were unanimously not contested by any person during the primaries that ended on Saturday, making them have an easy ride to be re-elected to represent the NPP in Parliament.

Among the MPs that went unopposed were the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu for Suame constituency, Manhyia South MP and Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, William Owuraku Aidoo for Afigya Kwabre South, Francis Manu Adabor, Ahafo Ano South East, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bosomtwe and MP for Afigya Kwabre East, Ms Mavis Nkansah Boadu who was the only female MP that went unopposed among others.

But the seasoned journalist believes even if the party deems it suitable for some members to go unopposed, although he is against such decision, it should however cover all others.

He thus wondered why the Dome-Kwabenya MP and Deputy Majoriy Leader, Adwoa Safo wasn’t protected by the NPP leadership if indeed it’s a sound judgement for some MPs to go unopposed.

Lawyer Adwoa Safo won the primaries by polling 496 votes while her competitor who is the son of the Speaker of Parliament and Ghana’s High Commissioner to India, Lawyer Mike Ocquaye Jnr polled 488 votes.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, Kwesi Pratt asked the NPP leadership “why didn’t they protect Adwoa Safo? Because Adwoa Safo is not an ordinary MP but also a Deputy Majority Leader who does her work effectively. So, while we were protecting, why didn’t anybody give Adwoa Safo any protection as well?”

He, therefore, advised the NPP to give a fair opportunity for every eligible person within the party to contest the primaries.

  • NPP to use court to stop defeated aspirants from going independent

The Eastern Regional Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Jeff Konadu, has said the governing party will go to court to stop any defeated aspirant in the just-ended parliamentary primaries from running as an independent candidate in the 7 December 2020 polls.

During the internal polls held on Saturday, 20 June 2020, 40 incumbents lost their tickets.

In the aftermath of the elections, there have been reports that some of the losers are planning to go solo.

Speaking to the media after a press conference on Tuesday, 23 June, however, Mr Kondau said: “Anyone who picked forms to contest the primaries, which is a process from the opening of nomination, picking of forms to the day of the election and after the election, is expected to abide by the rules of the primaries”.

“If along the line you were not successful during vetting or the election, and you disregarded the reconciliation processes to be embarked on by a team led by the Regional Chairman and Regional Council of elders, and still go ahead to contest as an independent candidate, it means you have breached the constitution of the party, for which we will immediately chase you out of the party,” he said.

He added: “Secondly, because you signed to agree on the rules and regulations of the primaries, we will go to court to stop you from contesting as an independent candidate, and the police will go round to remove all your posters. We can even stop you physically from campaigning in the Constituency”.

  • NPP Primaries:Tribal Oda Chiefs caused my defeat – William Quaittoo

The defeated member of Parliament for the Oda constituency in the Eastern region, William Quaittoo, has blamed his defeat on Chiefs in his Constituency.

The chairman for the education committee in Parliament lost his bid to return to parliament in the primaries of the ruling party over the weekend to Alexander Akwasi Acquah.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mr Quaittoo disclosed chiefs in his constituency have never hidden their dislike for him as a result of his tribe.

“There are several factors that come into play when you are looking for a candidate to represent a group. One key factor is the tribal sentiments and it played in my area and I thought that candidates will rise above that.

“I came from a very small area called Gyedem, only three polling stations and it is the only Abuakwa town within the constituency. Since 1992, nobody from the Kotoku land has been an MP before and they said now they want their own to represent them, they want a Kotoku person to be an MP.”

“I know a number of Chiefs called some big men and said since 1992 we have not had our own son representing us and we want somebody to represent us…so they [Chiefs] won the seat.”

Meanwhile, the minority in Parliament has charged investigative bodies to probe the opulence that characterized the NPP primaries.

The primaries saw over 100,000 delegates casting their votes for 308 aspirants in various constituencies across the country.

Some sitting Members of Parliament lost their positions to new aspirants while others also went unopposed.

    ‘Moneycracy’

Prior to the NPP primaries, reports were rife about some aspirants distributing money and items such as TV sets, bicycles among others to buy the votes of the delegates.

At some constituency, it was alleged that the Parliamentary aspirants gave as much as $1,200 to each of his over 300 delegates but still lost the elections.

A defeated aspirant named Eric Amankwa Blay who distributed 250 bicycles to the delegates, after losing the primaries, has gone back for all the bicycles.

    Make The Best Decision

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt has advised the defeated aspirants to make the best decision as they move forward with their lives.

Although he wouldn’t suggest what decision is appropriate for them to make, Kwesi Pratt however noted should the aspirants become selfish; they might do things which won’t augur well for the New Patriotic Party and the entire nation.

“With the defeated ones, are they going to think about themselves or their party or their country? Should it be that they become selfish or think about themselves, it might not augur well for Ghana and their party,” he said.

  • NPP should have protected incumbent MPs if they cared about them – Ben Ephson

Pollster, Ben Ephson says if the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were able to save 65 MPs from being contested, they could have done same to prevent the high attrition rate in the recently held primaries.

About 36 incumbent MPs were defeated in the primaries held on Saturday.

A total of 374 aspirants contested in 168 constituencies. Of the number, 325 are men and 51 women. 67 of the aspirants were unopposed and were acclaimed by delegates of the party in the various constituencies.

Majority leader and Member of Parliament for Suame constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has bemoaned the number of incumbent MPs who were not able to hold on to their seats.

According to him, it reduces the quality of work delivery in the House.

Ben Ephson speaking in an interview on Neat FM, said the NPP “should have protected the MPs if they cared about them.”

  • Losing 40 incumbent parliamentarians must be a source of worry to government – Prof Gyampo

Renowned Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has said that the defeat of 40 Members of Parliament at the just ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries must be a source of worry to government.

He explained that the defeat of the incumbent MPs meant that the policies and good works of government may not have reflected in the various constituencies adding that the issue needed to be addressed quickly.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, Professor Ransford Gyampo said “although some aspirants who won the primaries are known favourites of the President, the loss of seats by over 40 incumbent parliamentarians must be a source of worry to the government. Had it not been the undemocratic intervention by the party echelons to protect some of the incumbents, there would have been a disaster as more heavy weights would have fallen.”

“This, by a proactive stretch of imagination, can point to a certain yet to be empirically tested view that, the parliamentarians have not served and reflected the achievements of the incumbent government well in the constituencies. If this is true, then even though some seats may still be safe, some votes may be lost, and this may have implications for the Presidential elections, which must be unpacked and quickly addressed.” He added.

Prof. Gyampo, on the hand, said the defeat served as a good omen with regards to representation in parliament stressing that the huge loss serves as a warning because the foremost function of a parliamentarian is to act in the interest of constituents.

In his view, the defeat of incumbent MPs would have been more if some of the aspirants had not been protected by the party to go unopposed.

“The idea of parliamentary representation simply connotes going to parliament to act in a manner responsive to the interest of constituents. Parliamentarians are therefore to act first in the interest of those who sent them there and also consult constituents in their decision-making on matters that directly bothers the constituency.” He averred.

  • NPP elects 22 females to contest 2020 parliamentary elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected 22 females out of the 51 who contested in its parliamentary primaries on Saturday to contest in the 2020 general election.

Some political pundits have been advocating the need for political parties to ‘protect’ parliamentary seats being occupied by women in the quest to promote gender balance in the Legislature.

Currently out of 275 legislators in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic, only 36 are females, obviously not impressive for a country touted as the beacon of democracy in Africa.

Out of the 22 females elected, 12 went unopposed, while 10 were keenly contested by other parliamentary candidates in the 168 constituencies with sitting members of Parliament.

The candidates who went unopposed were Freda Prempeh, Tano North, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, Afigya Sekyere East, Patricia Appiagyei, Asokwa, Francisca Oteng Mensah, Kwabre East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, Awutu Senya East, Naana Eyiah, Gomoa Central, Nana Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, Akuapem North, and Abena Osei-Asare, Atiwa East.

The rest were Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ablekuma West, Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah, Weija-Gbawe, Catherine Abelema Afeku, Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, and Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, Prestea Huni-Valley.

Those who were contested by other candidates were Sheila Bartels-Sam, Ablekuma North, Sarah Adwoa Safo, Dome Kwabenya, Darkoa Newman, Okaikwei South, Tangoba Abayage, Navrongo Central, Amma Pomaah Boateng, Juaben, Cynthia Morrison, Agona West, Barbara Asher-Ayisi, Cape Coast North, Gifty Twum Ampofo, Abuakwa North, Abena Duruwaa Mensah, Assin North, and Lariba Abudu, Walewale.

A total of 374 aspirants contested in the 168 constituencies where the NPP has sitting MPs. They comprise 325 males and 51 females.

Sixty-five candidates went unopposed and were endorsed through acclamation in their respective constituencies.

It is imperative that the major political parties in the country found ways of reviewing their mode of electing candidates to contest on their tickets in order to favour female parliamentary aspirants and protect female legislators.

As a nation, it is time we took a firm decision on female participation in the governance process since 51 per cent of the population are females to champion the cause of women better.

It is hoped that the Affirmative Action Bill, which is currently before Parliament, would be passed into law soon to promote women’s voice and participation in the country’s fledgling democracy.

  • NPP Primaries: Those who disregarded court injunction should be disqualified – Prof. Gyampo

Renowned Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has said that unscrupulous party officials and aspirants who disregarded the court injunctions but went ahead with the elections should be sanctioned outright.

Prof Gyampo suggested that those involved should be disqualified adding that fresh primaries election should be held.

Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Akim North constituency of the Ashanti Region Saturday defied a pending injunction application to hold parliamentary primaries in the area with claims that neither did the EC or Police served them with the application prior to the elections.

There was an injunction at the constituency after some 145 delegates of the party claimed their names have been “unlawfully” and “fraudulently” missing from the register a day to the election.

Reacting to this development, Professor Ransford Gyampo such lawlessness should not be encouraged by any party in country.

“There were two reported instances where some unscrupulous party officials and aspirants, decided to act lawlessly in disregarding court injunctions and going ahead to organized unsupervised elections. This should never be countenanced by any party of law. Those culpable of this offense, should face a sanction of outright disqualification and fresh primary elections should be held for only law abiding candidates,” he said in an interview with GhanaWeb.

  • ‘Akufo-Addo stabbed Mark Assibey-Yeboah at the back’- NPP MP confirms

Member of Parliament(MP) for Okaikwei-North in the Greater Accra Region Honourable Issah Fuseini has said with caution that the Flagstaff house didn’t help Mark Assibey-Yeboah, MP for New Juabeng South in the Eastern Region by not talking to persons who wanted to contest him in the primaries to step down as done for others.

The MP made this comments in a follow up answer to comments made by an Honourable on the new day show on Tv3 on Monday 22nd June,2020.

Kwame Governs Agbodza who was also on the show said: “The NPP should be threading with caution. Although am an NDC MP, there are matters that concern all humans.”

“How can the party allow some MPs to go unopposed amd others opposed? Akufo Addo didn’t try for the likes of Mark Assibey-Yeboah.”

“From my sources, it is said that if you are not a Cabinet minister you should be contested. Is he fair to others? What of those who are not in Cabinet but went unopposed, he asked?”

But Honourable Fuseini Issah couldn’t agree more when the Host, Berla Mundi asked him of his opinion.

He said: “I think I will agree to some extent. Mark Assibey is one of the hard working MPs in this Government. He heads the finance committee. He does lots of Government businesses.”

“He even sits in committee meetings that has nothing to do with him. Sometimes I could go to parliament very early only to see his car parked at the car park. He was very hard working.”

But the MP continued that it is high time the NPP party considered certain job descriptions of some MPs just like what has been done for the majority leader in order to allow them not to be contested at certain times.

  • Sammy Gyamfi pooh-poohs NPP primaries

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has lashed out at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the manner in which its primaries were conducted on Saturday.

He said the entire exercise was conducted in “an environment where those who could afford the biggest pecuniary or monetary inducements carried the day”.

Speaking at the weekly press briefing of his party in Accra, Sammy Gyamfi said the primaries by the ruling party were characterized by “obscene violence and unprecedented levels of vote-buying and showboating”.

The NPP on Saturday elected parliamentary candidates for the December 7 elections in constituencies where it has sitting members of Parliament (MPs).

About 40 MPs lost their candidature to fresh entrants.

Violence marred the exercise at some constituencies. At Effiduase Asokore Constituency, for instance, legal practitioner Adom Appiah, an aspirant, was allegedly assaulted by some military officers.

Sammy Gyamfi said even aside the violence, “huge amounts of money” exchanged hands, giving an accurate picture of the corruption in the Akufo-Addo-led government.

“Huge amounts of money in some cases GH¢6,000, GH¢5,000 per delegate, GH¢4,000 per delegate exchanged hands in the full glare of the media while material gifts such as refrigerators, flat-screen televisions, motorbike, tricycles and other valuables were distributed to bribe and induce party delegates.”

He wondered “how a party which few years ago was begging for money from kayayei and street hawkers, how a party which few years ago toured the world with a cup in hand begging for money can afford this level of opulence and ostentation three and half years after coming into office speaks volumes of the endemic corruption and thievery that has engulfed the Akufo-Addo [government]”.

  • Limiting number of voters in internal party polls a threat to democracy – Mubarak

National Democratic Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Ras Mubarak has admonished political parties to review their internal primaries process to help solve vote-buying in party primaries.

The legislator says the limitation of delegates who vote to elect representatives in national elections has caused some individuals with money to manipulate the voting process in internal party primaries.

In his view, political parties should not limit the number of delegates who vote in primaries when every party member pay dues.

Ras Mubarak told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that every member of the party in good standing should be allowed to vote for representatives.

He noted limiting the number will lead to manipulation of the voting system, blackmail, extortion and corruption.

Ras Mubarak explained this current system could allow drug barons and other persons whose source of money are questionable to contest elections, buy votes and prevent persons who are genuine and competent for the job from getting elected.

”Party members pay dues but when it comes to voting to elect representatives, we allow only a few to decide. That is dangerous. It is dangerous because it provides an opportunity for big gurus sitting somewhere to use their resources to manipulate the system,” he said.

He also told the host when such persons get elected, they find ways to recoup the money they spent in their campaigns.
