M4C has just 32 hours more to ‘live’ – NAPO’s camp reacts ahead of announcement as running mate

Constituency Organizer for Manhyia South, Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan, known as Aboba, has revealed that the unveiling of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), will mark a significant return of members from the Movement for Change back to the party.

According to him, this event, which will also introduce the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, is set to take place on Tuesday, July 10, 2024, at Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region.

Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan emphasized on Abusua 96.5 FM’s Abusua Nkomo show with host Kojo Marfo that the Movement for Change, previously separated from the NPP, will face internal challenges immediately following the endorsement by the National Council of the NPP.

“In the next 32 hours, when the National Council endorses the candidate, the Movement for Change will implode.

The only persons who will remain with Allan Kyerematen will be his confidants, like Joseph Amoah and the KNUST political science lecturer, Dr. Akwasi Amakye Boateng.”

“The members of the Movement have already spoken extensively with us behind closed doors and told us they are excited that one of their own has been chosen to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They are willing to return to the party,” Aboba stated.

He also revealed that before the grand event at Jubilee Park, the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, will be introduced to and seek the blessing of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

NAPO, as he is fondly known, will also be taken on a procession through the main streets of Kumasi before arriving at Jubilee Park.

Abubakar Alhasan debunked assertions that President Akufo-Addo had reservations about the choice of NAPO, insisting, “Per my information, the president commended Dr. Bawumia for presenting the very name he was waiting for.”

“The name of the flagbearer’s choice was packaged and sealed in a special luxurious envelope deliberately imported from Dubai and presented to the president,” he boasted.

Sources within the National Council indicate that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will proceed with the process to declare the Manhyia parliamentary candidacy vacant immediately after Thursday’s council meeting, allowing interested individuals to contest.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who doubles as the NPP’s flagbearer, has formally nominated Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his preferred running mate for the upcoming December 2024 presidential election.

Dr. Bawumia made this announcement following a crucial meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, where he informed the President of his choice.

Prior to the meeting, several names were speculated as potential running mates, but Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the current Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, emerged as the favored candidate.

The stakes are high for both the ruling NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP aims to secure a third consecutive term in office, while the NDC seeks to avoid a third consecutive electoral defeat.

Upon unveiling, Dr. Opoku Prempeh will compete against Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of opposition flagbearer John Mahama.

Both candidates have previous experience serving as education ministers, and their respective records in the education sector will be pivotal during the campaign.

In what appeared to be a closely watched contest within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the top choice for running mate in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

This decision comes after a competitive process involving nearly 20 potential candidates.

Among the contenders were notable figures who are said to have been actively lobbying, either directly or indirectly, for the position. Additionally, there were others whose names circulated in media reports as potential running mates, even though they did not explicitly express their interest.

The three most notable disappointed contenders are Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Supporters of these candidates were reportedly vying against Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for the coveted role.

Ultimately, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, secured the top spot. Several factors contributed to his selection: his resourcefulness, his ability to stand firm against the opposition, and his deep understanding of grassroots politics. Napo is also praised for his leadership skills, generosity, and unwavering loyalty to the party.

Surveys conducted on the candidates in contention consistently showed that Matthew Opoku Prempeh was the best option.

This decision follows the announcement by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the current Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections.

According to a report from Joy News, Vice President Bawumia introduced NAPO to the NPP’s National Executives at the party’s headquarters in Accra on July 1, 2024.

Napo qualifies to be a better fit for Bawumia – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has voiced his endorsement of Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a potential running mate to the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on Okay FM on July 1, 2024, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted Dr. Prempeh’s extensive experience in both parliamentary and ministerial roles as a significant advantage for the party’s ticket.

“The minister, who has served as a Member of Parliament and held ministerial positions twice, qualifies to be a better fit for Dr. Bawumia,” he asserted.

Addressing perceptions of Dr. Prempeh’s demeanour, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified, “Matthew Opoku Prempeh is confident, but people have been attributing it to arrogance.”

He elaborated further on Dr. Prempeh’s potential contribution, stating, “Matthew Opoku Prempeh will use his experience in parliament to complement Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, so I believe the two of them on one ticket will help the party.”

Reflecting on Dr. Prempeh’s character traits, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized, “Napo has become Minister of Education and Energy… he is courageous and confident but humble, and sometimes people misconstrue self-confidence with arrogance.”

NAPO is the ideal running mate for Bawumia – Nana Yaw Osei

Private Legal Practitioner, Nana Yaw Osei, has urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to boldly announce Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate, suggesting that such a move could enhance his chances in the upcoming Presidential Election scheduled for December.

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia, is yet to publicly disclose his choice for vice-presidential candidate, although reports indicate he has proposed the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to Akufo-Addo.

According to Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei, if indeed Dr. Bawumia’s preference is Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), he should promptly announce his decision without further delay.

“If it’s NAPO, he should announce it. While I can’t guarantee that choosing NAPO as VP will ensure victory, it could certainly bolster his prospects. Can you name another influential figure from the Ashanti Region, besides NAPO, who might also be of help?” he queried.

Speaking on Bresosem at Abusua FM with Kojo Marfo, Nana Yaw Osei emphasized the challenging nature of the upcoming 2024 election for the ruling party, citing issues of incumbency and waning trust among supporters.

He noted that “when people criticize the government and there is evidence to back their claims, it affects the party’s ticket.”

Addressing criticism from MP Andy Appiah Kubi of Asante Akim North regarding the Bawumia-NAPO ticket, Osei advised restraint and maturity in expressing dissent.

“Today, people have left the party because Bawumia is their flagbearer, but we say it’s a game of numbers.”

Osei highlighted Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s extensive political experience, arguing that no other potential VP candidate surpasses him in credentials.

“He recounted, “NAPO has been in Parliament since 2009, serving 16 years, and has held ministerial positions in the last eight years, including a stint at a troubled ministry.”

“I have heard the Chief of Staff’s name; she served two terms. I also heard about the Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, who is currently in his second term and is seeking re-election, even if he wants to be chosen. Naa Torshie and Ursula Owusu came to meet NAPO in Parliament,” he chuckled.

Regarding the nomination process, Mr Osei underscored that while the National Council must endorse the choice, the ultimate decision lies with the flagbearer, who understands the strategic needs of the campaign.

Bawumia selected NAPO as his running mate based on consultations – Nana B

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has announced that the selection of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections was based on extensive experience.

On Monday, Dr. Bawumia revealed his choice of running mate to the national executives of the NPP after consultations with President Akufo-Addo and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr. Boakye explained that Dr. Bawumia’s decision was influenced by his extensive experience as a running mate and vice president.

He highlighted that this decision was also shaped by consultations Dr. Bawumia conducted.

“His Excellency the Vice President is making this decision with a huge wealth of experience. Why do I say so? In 2008 he was the running mate, in 2012 he was the running mate, in 2016 he was the running mate and we won, in 2020 elections he was again. His Excellency the president nominated him again to be his running mate. So he’s been eight years or more running mate and eight years vice president.”

“He’s made this decision based on his own experience, the consultation he’s done. So clearly you will expect such a man to come before national executives with some convincing and detailed reasons why he wants Dr Matthew Opoku to partner him,” he stated.

The announcement was made following Dr Opoku Prempeh’s earlier nomination presentation to the majority caucus in Parliament.

“The meeting took place at the NPP’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, where Dr Bawumia informed the National Officers of the NPP about his decision,” Nana-B stated in his post.

The Punch newspaper reported that ahead of his nomination, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh personally sought blessings and support from nearly all chiefs and queen mothers in the region for the responsibilities ahead.

While Napo’s father remains apolitical, he is said to have laid groundwork for his son’s emergence, including discussions with chiefs across Asanteman and neighboring regions.

An internal memo regarding Napo’s selection indicates that the 2024 election will be the first in Ghana where chiefs and traditional influencers in the Ashanti Region will take a keen interest due to Napo’s candidacy.

Wontumi and Napo make peace after intervention by Bawumia – Sources

Vice President and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is said to have successfully mediated a longstanding dispute between Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy.

The tensions between Wontumi and Napo within the NPP’s Ashanti Region, which included disagreements over party matters and Napo’s potential nomination as Bawumia’s running mate, have been effectively resolved, sources say.

This reconciliation effort was part of broader consultations undertaken by Dr Bawumia in preparation for announcing his running mate.

According to reports from Asaase Radio, Dr Bawumia convened a meeting at his official residence, attended by Wontumi, Napo, Nana Nkansah Boadu, and other senior party members.

The discussions, conducted in a constructive atmosphere, resulted in the resolution of all outstanding issues between the two influential NPP leaders.

Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that both Wontumi and Napo have committed to putting aside their differences and rallying behind Dr Bawumia’s leadership.

This unity paves the way for Dr Bawumia to present Napo as his nominee for running mate to the NPP’s national council, scheduled for endorsement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Once officially endorsed by the national council, Dr Bawumia is expected to formally announce Napo as his running mate in early July.

The path is now clear for the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to officially endorse Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as Napo, as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming December 7 elections.

This endorsement follows extensive consultations by the presidential candidate, which included the approval of Dr. Opoku Prempeh by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP majority in Parliament.

Prior to presenting his running mate to the party’s National Council, Dr. Bawumia held discussions with Dr. Opoku Prempeh and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, yesterday evening to reconcile differences and strategize for the future.

    Majority in full support

On Friday, June 28, 2024, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin affirmed the caucus’s unanimous backing of Dr. Bawumia’s selection of Napo as his running mate. This announcement came following a meeting between the Majority leadership and Dr. Bawumia to deliberate on his choice of running mate.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Afenyo-Markin indicated that the party’s national council will convene shortly to formalize the decision.

“Yes, the leader of our party and flagbearer met with the leadership of Parliament and had an extensive engagement with us regarding the way forward for the party going into the 2024 elections.

“The conclusion was that our respected colleague, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is his choice for running mate. And that is normally the practice, and out of respect, the caucus would have to be informed and engaged about the decision,” he said.

He added, “Afterward, I proceeded to engage the caucus, and so far, the feedback has been positive. The generality of the caucus members is in support of his choice. What it is, is that for it to become official or confirmed, there’s going to be a national council meeting.

“From what he tells us, it appears that there’s going to be a general consensus on that, and that will be no problem. We also enquired from him the views of the President on it, and it was very positive. So, this means that the various organs have been engaged with the information and that everything is set for our brother, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to join him to hold the flag of the party for the 2024 elections.”

Watch how you describe others – Afenyo-Markin reacts to critics of NAPO

Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from unjust criticism of potential candidates for the party’s vice-presidential ticket alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a press conference held in Parliament on the matter, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the imperfection of individuals and the need for respectful discourse when discussing potential running mates.

He stressed the importance of unity and cohesion within the party as Dr. Bawumia proceeds with the selection process for the 2024 General Elections.

Afenyo-Markin also highlighted the responsibility of Members of Parliament (MPs) to exercise caution in their public statements concerning candidates vying for the NPP’s vice-presidential candidacy.

“None of us can tick every box. So let’s be careful how we describe each other; how we say things about our colleagues; how we approach things and the language we use. It may not be helpful,” he noted.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s counsel seems to directly address comments made by NPP MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who previously voiced concerns about Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as a potential running mate.

Despite NAPO being seen as a valuable addition to the NPP’s electoral strategy by several seasoned political analysts, Appiah-Kubi was blunt in his assertion that NAPO was not suitable to partner with Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

  • NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

With an official announcement anticipated soon, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is poised to be named as the presidential running mate by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 general elections.

Political analysts and supporters of Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasize that his selection is pivotal in rallying support and strengthening the party’s dominance in the Ashanti Region.

They believe his nomination carries added significance due to his ties with the Ashanti royal family and the Manhyia Palace.

    NAPO’s connection with Manhyia

NAPO was born to Ohenena Kwame Kyeretwie and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko. His father, one of the many sons of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II, made significant contributions during his reign.

Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie played a key role in the establishment of Prempeh College, a well-regarded all-boys boarding school in Kumasi. He also donated land for the creation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which honored him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1969.

As the son of the Asantehene, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie served as the chief of Apagya in the Afigya Kwabre District for more than forty years until his passing on June 23, 2013.

    Leveraging royalty for political support

The Manhyia Palace, home to the Asantehene, stands not just as a physical landmark but as a central hub of cultural and political influence in the Ashanti Region.

NAPO’s deep-rooted connection with Manhyia has shaped both his personal identity and political career significantly.

As a direct descendant of Ashanti royalty, NAPO carries the weight of tradition and the expectations that come with his heritage.

His nomination as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate is seen as a strategic move that resonates strongly with the people of the Ashanti Region, who view him as a symbol of their values and aspirations.

The Ashanti Region has long been a stronghold for the NPP, and NAPO’s candidacy is expected to bolster this support even further. His royal lineage, combined with his political expertise, positions him uniquely within the party and makes him a compelling choice for voters.

In terms of political experience, NAPO has served as a Member of Parliament since 2009 and held the pivotal role of Minister for Education during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term.

His tenure as education minister was marked by significant achievements, notably the implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy.

Currently, NAPO serves as the Minister for Energy, overseeing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of energy policies, as well as coordinating activities across Energy Sector Agencies.

He will face off against Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also boasts a distinguished career as an education minister under a previous NDC administration.

Jane got only 35% approval from NDC’s Council, yet no member criticized her – Majority Leader

Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for calm within the Majority caucus following the announcement that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has chosen Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

He encouraged his colleagues to take a cue from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which accepted the presidential candidate’s choice of running mate despite significant internal opposition.

He revealed that over 60 percent of the National Council of the NDC’s votes were against Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate. Nevertheless, once the decision was approved and announced, no one publicly criticized it.

His remarks came in response to comments made by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who expressed that Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was not his preferred candidate.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, who is also a member of the NPP’s National Council, doubted NAPO’s ability to secure votes or be compliant with the presidency should the party win the elections.

The Majority Leader, however, urged MPs to respect the party’s decision and support the chosen individual, regardless of personal opposition. He acknowledged that the official communication of the chosen running mate had not yet been made but emphasized the importance of rallying behind the party’s selection to partner with Dr. Bawumia in the general elections.

“We haven’t received any official word from the party yet. Consultations are indeed ongoing, and we’ve heard various names.

“All the individuals mentioned are respected party members who have contributed significantly to our party. It would be inappropriate for anyone to single out an individual for criticism,” he stated.

“In politics, if destiny chooses you, your age, religion, or humility doesn’t matter. If God has chosen you, so be it.

“We need to maintain party unity, so let’s all wait and ensure that unity prevails. We know that when Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was selected, she received only 35% approval from the party’s national council, yet no one from the NDC publicly objected,” he added.

“We’re all in this together; no one is perfect. The flagbearer has the party’s confidence, and I trust he will utilize the party’s structures in making his decisions,” he affirmed.

This is unacceptable! – Majority leader to Appiah Kubi over recent comments against NAPO

Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has stirred controversy among some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region following his criticism of the reported selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Mr. Appiah-Kubi expressed strong reservations about Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, potentially being chosen as the running mate.

“I wouldn’t speak for the majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus to state our position. But for me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him (Napo). He is not my preference,” the Asante Akim North MP said.

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced disappointment over Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s remarks, addressing reporters at Parliament House on the same day.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of respecting party protocols in selecting running mates and cautioned against publicly disparaging colleagues.

“We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in a manner that is unacceptable,” he charged.

“We are in this together. There is no perfect person in this world. Let us be measured in the language we use. The flagbearer has the confidence of the party, and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further called on the Asante Akim North MP to exercise caution in his language, emphasizing unity within the party and confidence in the leadership’s decision-making process. “The flagbearer has the party’s confidence, and decisions will be made through party structures,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, a group identifying as Concerned NPP Members in the Ashanti Region expressed dismay over Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s comments, calling for disciplinary action. They criticized his remarks as disrespectful not only to Dr. Opoku Prempeh but also to the President, Vice President, and the NPP as a whole.

The group endorsed Dr. Opoku Prempeh as an outstanding choice, citing his potential contributions to securing electoral victories for the party. Drawing parallels to past criticisms of Vice President Bawumia’s selection as running mate, they highlighted his subsequent pivotal role in electoral successes and effective vice presidency.

In conclusion, the Concerned NPP Members urged party leadership to address Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s remarks swiftly to uphold party unity and focus on achieving an “8-year mandate” in the upcoming elections.

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has suggested that the current Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, would be an excellent running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an interview on Channel One TV, Assafuah pointed out Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s impressive track record and his strong connections, especially in the Ashanti Region, as key advantages that could greatly boost the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections.

Mr Assafuah emphasized that Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s accomplishments and his rapport with significant figures, including those at Otumfuo’s palace, make him a powerful choice to support Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.

Responding to criticisms of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s tenure in the energy sector, Mr Assafuah dismissed these concerns, arguing that the minister has shown his worth to the party through his achievements and the broad support he enjoys in his political stronghold.

“With the kind of things that he has to his credit, there is no doubt that he would add a lot to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. People believe that he’s a royal, he comes from Otumfuo’s palace and because of his relationship with the giants in the Ashanti Region, how he carried himself, and how he’s been a helper to most people in the Ashanti region, clearly he brings a lot to the ticket.

“I think Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did his own research, he has done a lot of engagements with party stalwarts and I do not think that it would be a mistake for him to add him to his ticket.

“I think if the NPP would want to garner about 80% of the votes, which is clearly becoming the ambition of the party, of course, he’s going to play a critical role to be able to make sure that we garner such votes,” he added.

You can’t describe Napo in such an “unacceptable manner” – Majority Leader to Andy Appiah-Kubi

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has intervened in a recent internal party strife within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the selection of a running mate for the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Addressing the controversy sparked by Asante Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi’s remarks regarding the potential selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, Afenyo-Markin stressed unity and mutual respect among party members.

“We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in an unacceptable manner,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of measured language in intra-party discussions.

The Asante Akim North MP had expressed reservations about Dr Opoku Prempeh’s acceptability across the NPP base, particularly among MPs, suggesting potential challenges in his ability to effectively campaign and secure votes in various constituencies.

Afenyo-Markin, while acknowledging diverse opinions within the party, reiterated his confidence in the NPP’s leadership and decision-making processes, particularly regarding the selection of a running mate.

“The flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, has the confidence of the party and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” Afenyo-Markin affirmed, underlining the role of established party structures in guiding such crucial decisions.

The Majority Leader’s intervention comes amidst growing internal tensions and debate within the NPP ahead of the upcoming elections, highlighting the delicate balancing act required to maintain party cohesion while navigating differing viewpoints on key strategic decisions.

  • Bawumia was forced to choose NAPO as running mate – Nyaho-Tamakloe

A senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has claimed that the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was forced to choose his running mate for the upcoming December elections.

This statement follows reports that Dr. Bawumia has named Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

According to sources, a meeting was held on Tuesday night where Dr. Bawumia sought advice from President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate.

This decision has sparked intense debate within the party, with many questioning the suitability of Dr. Opoku Prempeh for the role.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, June 27, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe alleged that Dr. Bawumia was forced to accept Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his running mate, despite concerns over the Energy Minister’s perceived arrogant demeanor.

He reiterated his claim from several months ago that Dr. Bawumia would not be able to make his own decision.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned why Dr. Bawumia was not allowed to pick his running mate, unlike previous NPP leaders, including former President Akufo-Addo, who had the discretion to choose their running mates.

“I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of this almost seven months ago and the reason is that simple.”

“Bawumia’s position, he will find it difficult to pick his own running mate. Rawlings picked his own running mate, nobody would dare bring anyone to him and say ‘This one should go with you’. He fielded Ackaah and he failed, he changed him to another person. Kufuor picked his own running mate.”

“First round, second round, I was present. Not that someone was telling me. Atta Mills picked his own running mate, Mahama picked his own running mate. Akufo-Addo, scene one, picked his own running mate, scene two, picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate?”.

Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate? – Nyaho-Tamakloe quizzes

Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has raised eyebrows within the party by alleging that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was imposed as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his concerns in response to reports that Dr. Bawumia had presented Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s name as his choice for running mate.

In an interview with 3FM, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe reiterated his belief that Dr. Bawumia was not given the freedom to select his preferred running mate independently.

He referenced historical precedents within the NPP and other political parties, where presidential candidates traditionally had autonomy in choosing their running mates without external influence.

“I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of this almost seven months ago,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, highlighting his earlier predictions about potential interference in the selection process.

He compared Dr. Bawumia’s situation unfavorably with past presidential candidates from various political backgrounds who had the liberty to make their own decisions regarding running mates.

Akufo-Addo, scene one, picked his own running mate, scene two, picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate?” he quizzed.

Dr. Bawumia, the current NPP flagbearer, had reportedly requested more time to consult before finalizing his decision on a running mate.

However, the eventual announcement of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has sparked controversy and debate within political circles.

NAPO is the wrong choice to partner Bawumia! – NPP MP

A Member of Parliament (MP) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi of Asante Akim North, has voiced his concerns about the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, as the running mate for the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on JoyNews on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Appiah-Kubi expressed his belief that NAPO, the MP for Manhyia South, is not the right choice to secure the necessary votes for the 2024 general elections.

“Well, I wouldn’t speak for the majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus for us to state our position. But me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi emphasized that his preference would be someone who could effectively campaign alongside Dr. Bawumia and the MPs, suggesting that NAPO does not fit this role.

“It’s not my preference. Appiah-Kubi is saying that he is not my preference. But that doesn’t mean that he is not qualified. If there was an opportunity like that, I would express a candidate, however acceptable otherwise, to our presidential candidate. I would want someone who will be open with the people on the ground, who will be able to deliver the votes, and who would also submit to the presidency, and who will also be important in bringing parliament closer to the executive.”

Appiah-Kubi further stated, “I would probably select someone who is more acceptable to the generals going to war, the parliamentarians. We should find someone who, if the presidential candidate is not there, will hold the hand of a member of parliament and go and conduct a campaign in that member of parliament’s constituency. I don’t see that happening in this equation. He cannot hold my hand. So why would I say that I prefer him? He cannot hold my hand.”

    About NAPO’s Nomination

According to myjoyonline.com, Dr. Bawumia presented NAPO as his running mate during a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

NAPO, first elected to Parliament on June 1, 2008, has been successfully re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. He has served on the Health, Appointment, and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as Education Minister, and he currently holds the position of Energy Minister.

NAPO’s track record makes him a better option for vice president role – Assafuah

Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has voiced his strong support for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the ideal running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has proposed Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as his running mate to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Sources from the presidency informed Channel One News that a meeting was held on Tuesday night where Dr. Bawumia sought advice from President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate.

It is reported that President Akufo-Addo provided some guidance, shared his views, and eventually endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s selection.

In an interview on ‘Citiuation Room’ on Channel One TV, Mr. Assafuah compared Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s credentials to those of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He highlighted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s achievements as Education Minister, including the restoration of teacher trainee allowances and the payment of debts owed to special schools and school feeding programmes.

Assafuah believes Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s track record makes him a better option than Professor Opoku-Agyemang.

“When you juxtapose the credibility in terms of being an educational minister and that of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who has also been an educational minister before, one superintended over the cancellation of books and research allowances, one restored it, one superintended the cancellation of teacher trainee allowance, one made sure that that was restored.”

“One superintended over a number of amount of monies that were owed by certain categories of people in terms of special schools, in terms of school feeding and one made sure all these monies were paid. So that’s the ticket Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has.”

Bawumia pitches Napo for running mate to Akufo-Addo

Sources say President Akufo-Addo has been informed of the identity of the running mate of the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also his Vice.

According to JoyNews, Dr Bawumia personally informed his boss of his intention to contest the 2024 general elections with Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as his running mate.

It is reported that the president accepted the nominee Dr Bawumia presented and offered some counsel on Tuesday night at the Jubilee House.

Sources say Dr Bawumia broke the news to President Akufo-Addo as follows:

“…He was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and won re-election in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served on the Health Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

“In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Education Minister and he now serves as the Energy Minister. The name is Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia was elected NPP flagbearer in December 2023 and is yet to officially communicate to the public his choice for running mate.

As this announcement remains unspoken, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been tipped as the front-runner in the race for the running mate position.

On June 15, 2024, a survey conducted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) indicated that the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

According to the study, Dr Opoku Prempeh secured 76.2% of the responses from executives polled.

Following him was the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who garnered 10.16%.

A recent Party Level Expectations Survey conducted by Research Trust, a research entity associated with the Danquah Institute (DI), has revealed that Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the favored choice for the running mate position alongside Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the survey, which gauged the expectations of party members regarding the potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh emerged as the frontrunner, with 35% of delegate participants expressing preference for him. The survey also found that a significant portion of respondents (26.8%) were open to any choice Dr. Bawumia makes after his consultations.

Following Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in the rankings were Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Hon. Dr. Henry Kokofu, with 14.5% and 10.4% respectively. Additionally, some respondents anticipated the nomination of Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyina and Chief of Staff Frema Opare for the running mate position.

The survey also highlighted key qualities expected in the running mate, including grassroots mobilization, party unity, competence, human relations, and other attributes related to party support and leadership.

In conclusion, the report suggests that Dr. Bawumia may consider the findings of this survey, along with other research, to inform his decision on selecting a suitable running mate. While the views of party delegates are crucial, it is also important to choose a candidate who is acceptable to non-party members.

Although there were concerns among party delegates regarding the delay in nominating a running mate, the report indicates a strong indication of the running mate being named before the end of June 2024.

Napo debunks “Ghana in energy crisis” report

Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, demonstrated his expertise in addressing Ghana’s energy challenges by responding to questions from Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding recent power rationing and outages experienced in some parts of the country.

Dr. Prempeh, known affectionately as Napo, assured lawmakers during a plenary session that his management of the energy sector had prevented a crisis necessitating load-shedding due to power cuts.

He explained that the recent power outages were not indicative of a crisis but rather a result of unforeseen circumstances, such as rapid population growth and increased commercial activities.

For instance, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the transformation of areas like East Legon from residential to commercial zones, straining the existing power infrastructure.

This surge in demand, coupled with an unexpected gas leak at Cen Power causing an immediate power loss of 340 Mega Watts, and maintenance at the Amandi Power Plant, contributed to the outages. Additionally, GRIDCo requested emergency outages in some areas, further complicating the situation.

These events were unanticipated, preventing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from implementing a scheduled load-shedding program, he emphasized.

“Mr. Speaker, a myriad of factors caused power outages in different parts of the country at different times. The ECG couldn’t have announced a load-shedding program because most incidents were unplanned,” he noted.

Dr. Prempeh addressed an urgent query from Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, the NDC MP for South Dayi, acting on behalf of the absent NDC MP for Tamale North, Alhassan S. Suhuyini. Dafeamekpor asked whether the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had implemented load-shedding and, if not, what had caused the power outages.

Despite offering clarification, some Minority MPs sought further details on the current power situation, noting that the original inquiry pertained to events two months earlier.

Dr. Prempeh reiterated that the ECG has not implemented a scheduled load-shedding program but is committed to addressing any issues to ensure stable power distribution.

  • NAPO’s vice presidency bid: NIB report shows 89% of NPP supporters are open to any candidate

NAPO’s vice presidency bid: NIB report shows 89% of NPP supporters are open to any candidate

A confidential report from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) selection of a running mate has been leaked, causing significant upheaval in the political landscape.

Based on a nationwide survey of 5,116 party members over two days in mid-June, the report offers a deep look into the party’s internal dynamics and preferences.

The survey aimed to measure support for Dr. Yaw Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the current Minister of Energy from Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.

While initial speculation suggested strong support for NAPO, with some reports claiming up to 70 percent backing his candidacy as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, the leaked report reveals a different story.

It shows that 84 percent of respondents see NAPO as the best pairing for Dr. Bawumia, with 88 percent considering him the party’s preferred choice. Surprisingly, 89 percent are open to any candidate selected by Dr. Bawumia.

This revelation challenges previous assumptions and highlights party members’ flexibility regarding the running mate selection.

Critics have questioned the NIB’s methodology and conclusions, accusing the bureau of bias. They suggest the survey may have been designed to favor NAPO by limiting respondents’ options to him and a few others, potentially skewing the results.

The report has also sparked a broader debate about transparency and inclusivity within the NPP’s decision-making process. Questions have been raised about the exclusion of prominent female figures from consideration, despite their significant contributions to the party.

In response, party members have expressed mixed opinions. While some support NAPO’s candidacy, others criticize what they see as an attempt to pressure Dr. Bawumia into selecting NAPO as his running mate.

The leaked NIB report has exposed internal divisions within the NPP and ignited a debate about fairness and the integrity of the party’s nomination process.

With elections approaching, the NPP leadership faces a challenging task in navigating these issues to ensure electoral success.

NPP National Executives meet to discuss Bawumia’s prospects for running mate

Per recent reports the National Executives within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are deliberating on the names of two influential individuals in the country as the party’s vice presidential candidate.

A journalist with Oman FM has indicated that Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and a church elder are among those being considered for the role of running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“I am at NPP’s headquarters at Asylum Down where the party’s National  executives have met and information reaching me is that Bawumia will be handing the name of his vice president to the executives after which the name shall be announced publicly. I have gathered that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and one elder’s name are under consideration. However I don’t know which elder exactly,” he added.

Once approved by the National Council, the submitted nominee’s name will be disclosed to the party.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has assured that Bawumia will unveil his running mate by the end of July.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program on June 5, 2024, Mr Kodua stressed that the decision regarding the running mate would not be delayed beyond July.

“I have had conversations with a lot of people, and I have also spoken to Dr. Bawumia. One thing I am very clear in my mind about is that we nominated our running mate in August 2008, but that did not help us. This time, as we aim to ‘break the 8’, if that is to happen, certain things that did not help us in the past must not be repeated. We are optimistic Bawumia will present the name of his running mate to Steering Committee latest by June, the name will be given to NEC and then National Committee. So his running mate will be named before August,” he stated.

With approximately six months remaining until the December 7 general elections, Dr. Bawumia has yet to reveal his choice of running mate.

The competition for the NPP’s running mate position is heating up, with several prominent figures under consideration.

Among the potential candidates are Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Bryan Acheampong.

Wontumi’s boy who peddled “John Kumah poison claim” attacks Napo again

An aide to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, (Chairman Wontumi), has criticized the performance of Matthew Opoku Prempeh, (NAPO), in his role as the Minister of Energy.

Oheneba Nana Asiedu expressed that NAPO has been underperforming and suggested that he be reassigned to the Gender Ministry.

The aide’s comments focused on the ongoing issues with inconsistent power supply, which he claimed are worsening and becoming unmanageable.

“Matthew Opoku Prempeh is performing poorly in the Energy Ministry. He should be moved to the Gender Ministry. He has failed the Energy Ministry. The inconsistent power supply is getting out of hand,” he stated.

This criticism adds to the growing concerns about the country’s energy sector and the government’s handling of the power supply crisis.

Many citizens and stakeholders have been vocal about the frequent power outages, urging the government to take decisive action to address the situation.

Meanwhile, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited have announced a three-week power interruption for three weeks.

A statement from the two entities said, “The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has explained in a statement that the reduction in gas supply is due to maintenance works being undertaken by a gas supplier in Nigeria and is projected to last three weeks.”

“The maintenance has caused a reduction in the overall power generation capacity in Ghana, which could result in load management over the period of the work,” the statement further added.

Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has emphasized the importance of fostering strong relationships among Ghanaian ethnic groups, citing them as fundamental to the nation’s progress and development.

During his visit to the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, at his residence in Accra, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories that collectively form the rich tapestry of Ghana.

“Our strength lies in our unity, and our progress is rooted in the cordiality and peaceful coexistence among our diverse ethnic groups,” he said.

The Minister recollected to His Royal Majesty, the extremely affectionate relations that have existed between Asantes and Gas as buttressed, for instance by the archival document of the programme line-up on 25th July 1946 of a durbar in honour of the then Asantehene, my grandfather, Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II at the Old Polo Ground, Accra.

Incidentally, the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is also scheduled to visit the Ga Mantse on Sunday, 9th June, 2024 in reciprocation of a similar gesture by the Ga Mantse, he added.

The Manhyia South law maker continued, “The UP tradition, front runner for the present day New Patriotic Party was not the endeavour of a single ethnic group, but a collective effort of Ghanaians from various backgrounds and so we are always reminded of the foundational principles of inclusivity and unity.”

The Ga Mantse expressed his satisfaction at meeting with the Energy Minister, highlighting the longstanding cordial relations that have existed between himself and the Asantehene. He noted that these relations date back to the time of their forebears.

“I believe that, we must guard the peace we have in our country jealously because it is in that co-existence that we can have development. I am always inclined to people who are not divisive and so I am happy to see you”he said

He continued, “On Sunday, I look forward to receiving my brother, Otumfuo and I believe it will be in furtherance of the close bond of affection and the great historical ties.”

The Energy Minister had previously visited the Awoamefia of Anlo land, Torgbui Sri, and the Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso, as part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between the political class and traditional authorities.

How Otumfuo influenced World Bank to back down on cancellation of $400m project

Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that Otumfuo’s timely intervention was crucial in reversing the World Bank’s decision to cancel two major educational projects when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed power in 2017.

Dr. Prempeh, who was then the Education Minister, stated that the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) and the Jobs and Skills Project were at risk of being canceled by the World Bank Group.

GALOP is a five-year initiative aimed at improving education quality in low-performing basic schools and enhancing equity and accountability in Ghana’s education sector. The Jobs and Skills Project focuses on supporting skills development and job creation.

Otumfuo’s intervention persuaded the World Bank to reconsider, leading to the restoration of approximately $200 million in funding for GALOP and an additional $200 million for the Jobs and Skills Project.

“This is the extraordinary traditional ruler we are celebrating through this commemorative gold coin,” Dr. Prempeh, popularly called NAPO, said when he received the gold coin at his office on February 22, 2022.

A delegation from the multi-functional entity E ON 3 Group and its key partners presented the gold coin to Dr. Prempeh.

    Value of the Gold Coin

Dr. Prempeh emphasized that the honor of receiving the gold coin was a testament to the nation’s appreciation of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s contributions to national development.

“Thank you for putting your good name on a good cause,” Dr. Prempeh told the E ON 3 Group and its partners.

    Investment in the Gold Coin

The Energy Minister urged Ghanaians to invest in the Otumfuo commemorative gold coin when it becomes available for sale. He explained that gold is a store of value, and since the commemorative coin has official authorization, it would be a beneficial investment.

“It is always good to store your money in gold, and I will encourage every able Ghanaian, willing and with the resources, to have this value stored for you.

“You buy it today and I’m sure in five years it is going to appreciate,” he stated.

“We are looking forward to you selling the gold coin so that we can also purchase some,” Dr. Prempeh added.

    From wars to education

Taking a journey into history, Dr. Prempeh said the tradition of the Asante has moved from warmongers to peacemaking, and from the battlefield to the classroom.

“From Prempeh I to Opoku Ware II to Osei Tutu II, the battle cry has been education,” he stated.

  • Ignore the joker – NAPO’s press aide on Kevin Taylor’s ‘Tullow contract claims

Ignore the joker – NAPO’s press aide on Kevin Taylor’s ‘Tullow contract claims

Press Aide to Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), Kofi Abrefa Afena, has dismissed the accusation made by Kevin Taylor on Sunday night, June 2, 2024, labeling it as laughable and portraying Taylor as nothing more than a joke.

Afena stated that the allegation was merely an attempt to tarnish and undermine the reputation of the Energy Minister, who has been a formidable opponent to the NDC.

“The oil and gas space is highly technical, so if you want to allege wrongdoing without any basis, you will definitely be exposed, and this is exactly what has happened to Kevin Taylor, who has thrown proper journalism to the dogs in satisfaction of his paymasters,” he said.

“If you follow his rendition closely, you will see that it clearly lacks depth, is full of inconsistencies, and has questionable logic.”

“If you recall, Kevin Taylor in his initial outburst said the contract was estimated at $204m, but now says it is estimated at $450m.

In his latest outburst, he admits that Tullow is awarding contracts, not NAPO, which is contrary to the earlier impression he created that NAPO had cooked, signed, and approved a certain contract,” Abrefa added.

According to the press aide of the minister, Kevin Taylor now mentions a certain Stephen Kermah as being involved in the deal, not a company owned by Bumpty as he erroneously painted initially.

“The writing on his Facebook wall of the name Qassim Shittu and asking if NAPO knows him and had met him to create an impression of a looming bombshell were all nothing short of theatrics.”

“Kevin Taylor is only exciting the base of the NDC, creating a perception of corruption and some mirage of wrongdoing, just as the NDC did in the 2008 elections for electoral gains, but this time around, the people of Ghana are more discerning and can see through these old tactics,” Afena stated.

In a press release issued last week as a response to Kevin Taylor’s initial allegations, the Ministry of Energy clarified that it does not hold responsibility for signing and approving contracts within Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

Thus, contracts involving Tullow and its Partners mentioned do not require the Ministry’s approval.

The statement emphasized that contracting in the upstream sector undergoes a rigorous technical and commercial evaluation process by the operator, followed by independent assessments and evaluations by other partners.

This process, it asserted, is not under government control.

Regarding the ongoing attacks on Dr. Prempeh’s reputation by Kevin Taylor, particularly accusations of criminality, the Minister’s legal team intends to pursue appropriate legal action in due course.

Bawumia’s running mate will emerge from Manhyia – Afigya Kwabre MP hints

Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Constituency, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has hinted that the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has selected Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

According to him, Ghanaians had expressed a preference for a running mate from the Ashanti region, and in response, someone from Manhyia has been chosen—Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Reports from Ghanaweb reveal that the MP made this known this during an interview with Angel FM: “We say we want a running mate from the Ashanti region and isn’t the Ashanti region Manhyia, so what’s the problem? If you want a typical Ashanti, who is an Ashanti, and who is his nephew?”

The host then suggested that all fingers pointed to Napo. Collins Adomako in response said, “Do we have any better car than Rolls-Royce, and now we have someone who has a Rolls-Royce engine within him (Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh) what else will you want.”

He also addressed the perception of the Energy Minister being rude and arrogant, saying, “Matthew Opoku Prempeh is different; I don’t know why people think he is arrogant. Get close to him, and you will love him; he is a giver and does everything.”

The names of three prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who are all cabinet ministers and sitting Members of Parliament, have emerged as potential candidates for the position of running mate to the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the December 2024 general elections.

All three potential running mates bear the title Doctor (Dr). They are Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region and Minister for Education; Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency also in the Ashanti Region and Minister for Energy; and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi in the Eastern Region and Minister for Food and Agriculture.

On May 21, 2024, President Akufo-Addo announced that the flagbearer would reveal his running mate in June.

  • Three cheers for ‘Napo’

    Three cheers for ‘Napo’

Soon after the 2016 election, a UK-based friend I had come to know through Facebook, Kwame Kyei-Baffuor, called me. saying he wanted to recommend me as Press Secretary to Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Manhyia South MP (a.k.a ‘Napo’ ), upon his imminent appointment as Minister for Education.

I was intrigued yet highly flattered by his kind suggestion and allowed my name to be put forward.

I had never met Dr Prempeh in person even though he was and still is my MP. Kwame made the necessary arrangements to put us in touch and eventually, on March 1, 2017, I started work at the ministry, with the primary responsibilities of working on his speeches and providing communication support.

Relocating from Kumasi was like having a tooth pulled out without the benefit of anaesthetic, but that is a story for another day. With Dr Prempeh’s 56th birthday due to fall this Thursday, I cannot help but reflect on my public role over the past seven years, and on the man who has been central to this invaluable public service experience.

    Public service

Early into our working relationship, we had to establish an important demarcation. I had noted that Dr Prempeh, a surgeon by training and therefore a clinically precise person, preferred his speeches to reflect just that. I, on the other hand, a disciple of the liberal arts, had a more ‘Shakespearean’ disposition on writing, complete with ornamental, sometimes flowery language. Of course, I, rather than he, had to make the adjustment.

With the government’s decision to implement its flagship Free SHS programme at the start of the 2017/18 academic year, which was only six months away, I found myself thrown into the deep end almost as soon as I started work, as the ministry scrambled under Napo’s leadership to deliver.

It was an almost frantic situation. I would get to the ministry at 7 am to find his car already parked and several senior officials busy at work. I observed a man who would patiently listen to submissions during meetings, ask piercing questions and argue his point with aplomb, as if he had been in education all his working life ― a trait he has carried into the energy space as minister.

Officials got to know better than to turn up at meetings unprepared, and for me those early months were a huge learning curve. I quickly discovered that communicating particularly on social media while working in government required a completely different skills set from when in opposition.

Almost by default, there is a general mistrust of literally everything that any government says or does, which puts one on the ropes before even attempting to communicate policy or explain certain official decisions.

Relationships with media and party grass roots, in particular, constitute a tightrope to be carefully navigated if one is to avoid being tagged with ‘arrogance in power’.

    Perceptions

Ahead of taking up the job, a few friends had warned me that I would struggle to work with the minister, insisting I would leave the job in a few months. But I have long learnt in life to see things for myself and not to rely on others’ perceptions.

What I have found out for myself over the past seven years is that Dr. Prempeh is a strong-willed, highly focused and determined character, a man who does not countenance negativity when pursuing goals.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this alpha-male personality has been perceived as disrespect and even bellicosity, bordering on arrogance. It appears some prefer to take assertiveness for arrogance and docility for humility. But beneath it all lies an underbelly of jovial, light moments with a passion for a good debate, for Kumasi Asante Kotoko and for Kofi Kinaata’s music, to which he can dance to no end.

If we have crossed swords in the past seven years, it has mainly been over our respective schools. He is intensely proud of his alma mater, Prempeh College, as I am of mine, Opoku Ware School, and the ancient rivalry between our two schools sometimes spills unto the conference room table in light moments during meetings.

“My blood is green,” he would say, in reference to his school’s primary colour. “Mine is blue, Honourable,” I would retort, from the school colour perspective.

    Political future
Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Dr Prempeh is a big player in Ghanaian politics, with a passion for public service and a zeal to always succeed in any task he is given.
Quite unusually for a medical student, he became the local NUGS President at KNUST back in the day, perhaps heralding things to come.

With his many years in frontline politics as a Member of Parliament and a minister, together with several accomplishments to his name, I ardently believe that Dr Prempeh has a bright future in the politics of Ghana. Of course, ultimately, God is the lifter of men.

Come Thursday, on Napo’s 56th birthday, I, like many others, will certainly be raising a glass of vintage Dom Perignon champagne to his health and longevity. Cheers!

If you want electricity tell Parliament to approve loans – NAPO

Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called on Parliament, particularly opposition members to allow smooth approval of loans for critical projects such as that of the energy sector.

His calls comes after Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North Constituency in the Oti Region on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) questioned him on the current state of the Ghana China Water deal which was to finance and construct various infrastructure projects across Ghana including the extension of electricity to rural communities and this appears to have halted for sometime now.

According to the Minister, his constituency had about 19 communities connected to electricity in Phase 1, and 12 communities were awarded under Phase 2. However, since 2017, no community has been connected. He lamented the challenge of having to split the cost with the energy ministry, with 4000 thousand on buying poles.

Dr. Matthew called on Parliament to pass loans when it resumes sitting to help the government get more funds to extend electricity nationwide without hurdles. He continued that the China Water Deal has been plagued with funding challenges, especially due to Ghana’s recent partnership with the IMF and the dire impact of COVID-19 on the country’s economy. Hence, there is a need for the government to gain access to loans to address the crisis facing the energy sector.

“It was a contracted project and if they find out after going to site there are more projects or towns that should have been included in the project, these challenges pop up.

After the contractor has gone out for feasibility, they find out that there are many more communities that should have been included, it means they will have to come for extra funding and it is the extra funding that has been the major problem. especially after the COVID and IMF project.

Even when they get it passing it through Parliament is also another problem.

I won’t blame us but I will blame parliament that even getting loans through Parliment…You hear press conferences say the country that is broke we have taken 3.5 billion. I say don’t do that because if you do that and come and ask me for money for electrification how do I get the money when you don’t pass my loan” he noted.

He therefore urged Parliament to expedite its approval of pending loans on its table to help the government secure funds for all pending projects.

“So I think when we come back, there are loans that need to be quickly passed. Let us assist the government in approving those loans for your 12 communities,” he added.

Term Mahama’s era as dumsor, ours is dum siesie – NAPO reiterates

Ghana’s Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, insists that Ghana is experiencing “dumsiesie” and not “dumsor” amidst the recent power outages plaguing the country.

According to him, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, the country’s intermittent power supply is a result of efforts to resolve the power crisis compared to the situation under the previous administration.

During his appearance before the Government Assurances Committee Sitting on Friday, May 3, 2024, the minister responded to a question from the current member of parliament for the Ablekuma South Constituency regarding why the country is still experiencing power outages despite his claim that electrification in the country is 88.75% complete.

“I’m not sure I am here again to talk about dumsor as you will like to drag me into.

We are in the era of dumsie sie which is profoundly different from dumsor.Dumsor as it inflicted on Ghanaians has only happened as characterised His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.

He is the only President that four years he reigned, ruled governed it has been dum dum dum.
So if the non partisan colleague says that now it is worse then I don’t know where his realities lie” he noted.

NAPO is the best person to be Bawumia’s running mate – Allotey Jacobs

Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has indicated that the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is best placed to become the running mate of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 24, 2024, Allotey Jacobs dismissed the idea that regional biases play a role in the selection process, considering it a tactic to influence decision-making.

“They did the same to President Mahama, suggesting that if he didn’t choose a Voltarian, certain consequences would follow. Accusations were made that her (Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s) own people didn’t vote for her. All those things are just lies. Personally, I support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; I believe he is the best fit for that position,” he said.

He also noted that there is mounting pressure on New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to announce his running mate for the 2024 elections.

Allotey Jacobs described such pressures as common in politics, often driven by individuals seeking personal benefits.

“I am on the issue of pressure being mounted on Dr. Bawumia to name his running mate. Yes, there is indeed too much pressure. It’s a common practice; others have faced similar pressure,” he said in an interview.

He compared this situation to the pressure former President John Mahama faced before he announced his running mate.

A group known as the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia is urging the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to announce his running mate before the end of May 2024.

The pro-NPP group argues that an early announcement of the running mate would allow the party to kickstart a robust campaign, thus increasing their chances of success in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

During a press conference held in Kumasi on Sunday, April 21, 2024, the group stressed the importance of selecting a running mate to expand the party’s campaign outreach. They believe that the chosen individual will play a crucial role in disseminating the party’s message across the country.

James Aggrey Fiifi Eshun, the spokesperson for the group and the second vice chairperson for the Oforikrom Constituency, cautioned Dr. Bawumia against succumbing to pressure from individuals vying for the running mate position.

  • Only NAPO holds power to release ‘dumsor’ timetable – Osafo-Maafo reveals

Only NAPO holds power to release ‘dumsor’ timetable – Osafo-Maafo reveals

Senior Presidential Advisor Nana Yaw Osafo-Maafo has revealed that only the Energy Minister, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, known as Napo, has the authority to issue a load-shedding timetable.

Amidst Ghana’s ongoing power supply challenges, Osafo-Maafo emphasized that such decisions fall under the minister’s jurisdiction due to his role in overseeing the energy sector.

Highlighting the minister’s exclusive jurisdiction over the matter, Osafo-Maafo emphasized that only Napo, who oversees the energy generation ecosystem, possesses the power to issue such a directive.

He affirmed that although load-shedding schedules are feasible, they necessitate Napo’s command due to his oversight of power generation and distribution.

“To publish the rationing of power, nobody can do it except the Minister of Energy because he is overseeing the generation and they [ECG] are looking at the utilization. So, they can look at it and say that in this particular area, this is how it should be done,” Osafo-Maafo stated during a forum on open government partnerships and construction sector transparency in Accra.

The sector minister recently dismissed public calls for a load-shedding timetable, asserting that such demands were baseless and unsubstantiated.

In recent months, Ghana has faced erratic power supply, causing significant disruptions to businesses and citizens’ daily lives.

The resurgence of power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’, has raised concerns among the populace. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has called for a timetable from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), a demand that has been met with resistance.

Despite mounting pressure, government officials maintain that the current outages do not constitute ‘dumsor’ and argue against the necessity of a published timetable.

The issue escalated when Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh challenged those advocating for a timetable to create one themselves, further fueling public frustration.

  • Nobody can order the publication of dumsor timetable except NAPO – Osafo-Maafo

Nobody can order the publication of dumsor timetable except NAPO – Osafo-Maafo

Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Maafo has stated that the responsibility for releasing a load-shedding timetable lies with the Energy Minister, citing the minister’s oversight of power generation as the basis for this authority.

He clarified that the decision to publish such a schedule can indeed be implemented, highlighting the importance of effectively managing available power resources.

Osafo-Maafo made these remarks during a forum on open government partnerships and construction sector transparency in Accra, on Tuesday, April 23.

He emphasized the need for coordination between power generation and utilization to determine the areas and timings for rationing electricity.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Dr. Opoku Prempeh has dismissed calls for a timetable, asserting that the country is not currently experiencing power outages.

This assertion contradicts the widespread reports of sporadic power cuts, commonly referred to as ‘Dumsor,’ that have affected various sectors.

In Parliament, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assured the public that the government is actively addressing the issue.

He expressed confidence in the government’s ability to resolve the situation effectively, citing past successes in maintaining a steady power supply under challenging circumstances.

Despite these assurances, the persistence of ‘Dumsor’ continues to impact businesses and communities across Ghana, raising concerns about its long-term effects on the economy and livelihoods.

Why the ‘hatred’? Where did NAPO go wrong – Kwesi Pratt asks Ghanaians

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has voiced his disapproval of what he sees as relentless attacks on Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Pratt expressed concern over reports of groups targeting the minister, who also holds the position of Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South constituency.

He pointed out recent incidents, such as controversies surrounding Opoku Prempeh’s marriage and criticisms related to speculation about his potential selection as a running mate.

“One of today’s papers reports that a group of people are sabotaging Napo so that Bawumia won’t appoint him as his running mate. But where from this too?

“Truth be told, I haven’t heard Napo himself say that he wants to become Vice President. People are only expressing their views on the matter, that if he gets such an appointment, it would be good and that it would help the NPP and Ghana as a whole, which is not bad,” Pratt said on a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 15, 2024.

He raised doubts about the credibility of these rumours regarding the selection of a running mate and whether there is a deliberate attempt to hinder Opoku Prempeh’s political ambitions.

“So why should there be a conspiracy against him?

“What wrong has Napo done for people in the Ashanti region to sabotage him, That is not fair. When Napo got married recently, people were making a lot of noise about it,” he added.

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has expressed his admiration for the wife of Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

On Peace FM’s Kokrokro show, Mr Pratt noted that Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, deliberately handpicked his wife.

Mr Pratt believes that NAPO’s spouse gives off an aura that represents the wife of a vice president.

“She is very beautiful. Napo took his time and deliberately chose her. You can tell, the Second Lady aura. He deliberately chose her,” he said.

GHS500k has been offered by some NPP chairmen to make NAPO vice president hopeful – Chairman Aluta alleges

The chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Juaben constituency, Alex Sarfo Kantanka, has raised allegations suggesting that Ashanti regional constituency chairpersons are facing pressure to endorse Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), as the running mate for Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Kantanka revealed that he was contacted by Fiifi Mensah, the chairman of Bantama constituency, who urged him to sign a petition in support of NAPO as the potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia.

Expressing his reservations, Kantanka emphasized that decisions of such importance should not be swayed by financial incentives or endorsements from party officials.

During an interview on Okay FM on April 9, 2024, Kantanka disclosed that he had been invited to sign the petition alongside other constituency chairpersons but opted not to participate in the process.

When questioned by the host regarding rumors of monetary inducements, Chairman Aluta confirmed the existence of such pressure, recounting his own experience of being approached by Chairman Fiifi to endorse NAPO.

He highlighted the importance of selecting a running mate based on merit and suitability rather than monetary influences.

Chairman Aluta further expressed concern over the notion of party chairpersons being involved in endorsing a candidate for the vice presidency, emphasizing the need for transparent and merit-based selection processes within the party.

He concluded by condemning the idea of the vice presidential slot being allocated to the highest bidder, stressing the importance of upholding the integrity and principles of the party.

“He mentioned that the letter was with Joe Carl, the chairman of Nhyiaeso. I agreed to come and sign. On my way to the location, the Kumawu chairman called me to inquire if I had been contacted. I confirmed, but I pretended not to understand the nature of the conversation.”

“He also mentioned that Fiifi had called him to come and sign. I felt distressed, so I decided not to go, and he did the same.

“The party shouldn’t be run based on who can pay money.

“Since I became chairman, I have never encountered a situation where chairmen are supposed to endorse a candidate for the vice presidency as a running mate. Never in my life as an NPP member have I seen such a scenario where the selection of a running mate should be based on the endorsement of party chairmen.

“So, what is going on? It confirms what people are saying. The running mate slot is being given to the highest bidder,” he added.

Stop joking and fix dumsor, your disturbing utterances – Domelevo to NAPO

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo has advised Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to exercise caution in his remarks towards Ghanaians.

Domelevo criticized some of the recent comments made by the minister, labeling them as troubling and disrespectful, especially considering his position.

Opoku Prempeh’s recent statement challenging those advocating for a load-shedding timetable from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has stirred controversy.

Amid ongoing power challenges, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, there have been growing calls for a structured load-shedding timetable. However, ECG has resisted implementing one, citing the absence of an official “dumsor” situation and erratic demands from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to shed load.

Opoku Prempeh’s comments, made during the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, received criticism, prompting Domelevo to call for a more respectful approach towards Ghanaians.

In an interview with JoyNews, Domelevo emphasized that Ghanaians are the minister’s employers, stressing the importance of showing them respect and a sense of duty.

“I would advise him to be mindful of some of his utterances. I found it a bit disturbing when he told people that they should bring their own load-shedding timetable. I said. No. He should be joking because that is not acceptable.”

GRIDCo’s letter to Energy Minister bid to escape accountability – ACEP

The Executive Director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye, suggests that the recent letter from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to the Minister of Energy, expressing concerns over the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) failure to provide a load-shedding timetable amidst the ongoing power outages, is an attempt to deflect blame.

In the letter dated March 28 and addressed to the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, GRIDCo raised serious concerns regarding ECG’s non-compliance with load-shedding management instructions issued by the National System Control Center (NSCC).

During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Friday, April 5, Ben Boakye elaborated on the contents of GRIDCo’s letter, indicating that it serves as an official attempt by GRIDCo to distance itself from the ongoing power crisis.

Boakye explained, “GRIDCo acknowledges the existing challenges within the power sector, including the generation deficit. Therefore, the letter to the Energy Minister aims to absolve GRIDCo from any responsibility for the current situation.”

GRIDCo’s letter highlighted ECG’s failure to adhere to directives from the National System Control Center, warning that this non-compliance poses a significant risk to the stability of the power grid.

It cited instances where ECG’s actions led to a drop in system frequency in certain areas.

Additionally, Boakye emphasized the potential negative impact of the power challenges on ECG‘s revenue generation.

He pointed out that the Burkinabe authorities had recently communicated with their citizens about similar power challenges and mentioned plans to acquire a power plant, which could further exacerbate the situation in Ghana.

Overall, Boakye’s remarks underscore the complexity of the ongoing power crisis and highlight the need for coordinated efforts to address the underlying issues affecting the sector.

“GRIDCo is aware of the generational gap in the power sector and all other stakeholders are aware of the challenges affecting the sector so the letter to the Energy Minister is to officially take itself out of what is happening in the sector because the gas to generate the power is not enough.”

“Burkinabe authorities communicated recently about the power challenges to their people and said they are considering getting a power plant which will be a shoot in our foot.”

Your dumsor timetable comment was cruel – Mahama tells NAPO

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has criticized Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh for his dismissal of those requesting a schedule for power outages, branding it as “most disrespectful.”

Mahama’s remarks came in response to Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s statement that individuals seeking a dumsor timetable are harboring malicious intentions towards Ghana and should create their own schedule if they desire one.

“Ask those who want it to bring it if there is [one],” the Manhyia South MP told journalists on Monday, 25 March 2024, at the inauguration of the governing New Patriotic Party’s campaign team in the Ashanti Region.

“I haven’t seen any timetable,” he noted, adding: “The Electricity Company of Ghana says that there’s no timetable coming,” so “why do you want to bring a timetable?”

“For what purpose? Why would somebody wake up and wish for evil and wish bad for the country?” he wondered.

During the inauguration of the governing New Patriotic Party’s campaign team in the Ashanti Region on Monday, March 25, 2024, the Manhyia South MP asserted, “Ask those who want it to bring it if there is [one].”

He emphasized that he hasn’t seen any such timetable and questioned the purpose behind its creation, particularly when the Electricity Company of Ghana has stated that no such schedule is forthcoming.

Expressing concern over the lack of planning due to the erratic power supply, Mahama addressed members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) during a stakeholder engagement.

He highlighted mismanagement in generating assets and the use of ESLA funds, which were intended to finance debt, as contributing factors to the return of dumsor.

Mahama emphasized the importance of citizens having a schedule to plan effectively and criticized Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s assertion that those seeking a timetable have malicious intentions towards the country. He described this stance as disrespectful to Ghanaians and customers of electricity, emphasizing the necessity of a stable macroeconomic environment for business growth and fiscal consolidation.

“The country has been plunged into darkness. Mismanagement about generating assets and collateralisation of ESLA, which was meant to provide the resources to finance current and legacy debt, has led us back to dumsor. The best government can do is eat a humble pie, take responsibility for the problem and work to address it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I’m aware that businesses and households cannot plan because of the erratic power situation”.

“While citizens demand a schedule to enable them to plan, which is the least the responsible government should be doing, Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who was one of the frontline participants of the ‘Dumsor must stop’ campaign while in opposition, is reported to have said, those asking for a load-shedding timetable wish ill for the country, and they should publish their schedule”.

“This is most disrespectful to Ghanaians and the customers of electric power. There is absolutely no doubt that businesses strive in a stable macroeconomic environment where revenue measures are designed to motivate the local production for growth and fiscal consolidation.”
