Napo stepped aside for Bawumia to contest for NPP flagbearer – Manasseh

The President Ghana Never Got, a book authored by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni discloses that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, stepped aside to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position.

This pivotal move influenced Bawumia’s decision to choose NAPO as his running mate.

Awuni explains that NAPO had expressed his intent to contest for the position but withdrew his candidacy to back Bawumia.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book reveals.

The book also highlights that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was taken aback to learn about Bawumia’s decision from external sources rather than from his own advisors. Notably, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had been aware of the choice two months prior to the official announcement to the President.

“The Asantehene had mentioned it to the President. Akufo-Addo was shocked to hear the news at his next door from someone about 250 kilometres away. But this was not accidental,” the book quotes.

Before formally informing the President, Bawumia had already discussed his choice with former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

The book reveals that although President Akufo-Addo and his family had hoped for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to be selected as the running mate, Bawumia preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah initially.

However, NAPO’s strong political standing, particularly his connection to the Ashanti Region, made him the final choice.

  • Why Bawumia chose Napo as his running mate

Why Bawumia chose Napo as his running mate

Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has in his recent book, The President Ghana Never Got, unveiled the reasons behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, as his running mate.

According to Awuni, NAPO played a crucial role in Bawumia’s decision to select him for the position.

Awuni reveals that NAPO, initially preparing to contest for the NPP flagbearer position himself, decided to step aside to support Bawumia’s candidacy.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book states.

The book also notes that Bawumia’s choice was influenced by NAPO’s strong political standing and connection to the Ashanti Region, despite concerns about his perceived arrogance.

Awuni further highlights that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was surprised to learn about Bawumia’s decision from external sources rather than from his own advisors.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had been aware of the choice two months before the official announcement to the President.

Additionally, Bawumia had discussed his decision with former President John Agyekum Kufuor before informing President Akufo-Addo.

While Akufo-Addo and his family had hoped for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bawumia initially preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah. Ultimately, NAPO’s political connections and his significance in the Ashanti Region made him the preferred choice.

Revealed: Otumfuo was informed about Napo’s running mate role 2 months before Akufo-Addo

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, in his latest book, The President Ghana Never Got, reveals intriguing details about how Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was chosen as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The book uncovers that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was privy to this decision a full two months before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was officially informed.

According to Awuni, President Akufo-Addo was surprised to learn about Bawumia’s selection from external sources rather than his own advisors. The revelation that Otumfuo knew of Bawumia’s decision weeks before it reached the President underscores the complexity of the situation.

“The Asantehene had mentioned it to the President. Akufo-Addo was shocked to hear the news at his next door from someone about 250 kilometres away. But this was not accidental,” the book quotes, according to MyJoyOnline.com.

Three weeks prior to Bawumia’s formal communication with the President, the Asantehene had already disclosed the choice during a conversation, leaving Akufo-Addo taken aback. Manasseh Azure Awuni notes that Bawumia had also consulted former President John Agyekum Kufuor before informing the President.

“The information about Bawumia’s choice of running mate was more secure with the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace than in Akufo-Addo’s Jubilee House and the state intelligence agency he trusted to conduct the research,” the book further reveals.

Manasseh recounts how NAPO had initially expressed his intentions to contest but stepped aside to support Bawumia when he learned of his candidacy. This gesture left a significant impression on Bawumia, who then earmarked NAPO for the running mate position.

Although NAPO was not considered the ideal candidate due to perceptions of arrogance, he was ultimately chosen because of his strong political ties, especially his connection to the Ashanti Region, which was seen as a crucial factor.

Interestingly, the book also notes that President Akufo-Addo and his family had hoped for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to be selected as the running mate. Initially, Bawumia preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, the former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, for the role, but NAPO’s political standing made him the final choice.

In his latest book, The President Ghana Never Got, investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni sheds light on how Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) was selected as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate.

Awuni reveals that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was taken aback to learn about Dr. Bawumia’s decision from external sources rather than from his own advisors. The book also notes that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was aware of the choice two months prior to the official announcement to the president.

“The Asantehene had mentioned it to the President. Akufo-Addo was shocked to hear the news at his next door from someone about 250 kilometres away. But this was not accidental,” myjoyonline.com quoted part of the book as saying.

The book highlighted that three weeks before Dr. Bawumia communicated his decision to Akufo-Addo, the Asantehene mentioned it to the president during a conversation, which left him shocked.

Manasseh further stated that before officially informing the president, Dr. Bawumia had already discussed his choice with former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“The information about Bawumia’s choice of running mate was more secure with the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace than in Akufo-Addo’s Jubilee House and the state intelligence agency he trusted to conduct the research.”

“NAPO was not the ideal candidate because of his perceived arrogance, but he checked all the boxes of political considerations, the foremost being that the running mate must come from the Ashanti Region.”

Manasseh also revealed that President Akufo-Addo and his family were hoping for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to be selected as the running mate.

The book added that Dr. Bawumia initially preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, the former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, as his running mate, rather than NAPO.

However, NAPO was chosen due to his strong political standing, particularly, his connection to the Ashanti Region.

  • Nkroful chiefs, Napo smoke the peace pipe over ‘derogatory’ Nkrumah comment

Nkroful chiefs, Napo smoke the peace pipe over ‘derogatory’ Nkrumah comment

Chiefs and people of Nkroful have accepted an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, after he made controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his introduction in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which led to widespread criticism.

While some people completely disagreed with the comparison, others took issue with the way it was presented.

Following the backlash, NAPO issued a public apology for his statements. However, the chiefs of Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, insisted that he apologize in person before they would accept it.

During his visit to the Nzema area, NAPO stopped by Nkroful to personally apologize for his remarks.

“I lived with Nzema people when I was growing up. Nzema people and I are one people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any way, anybody who attempts to disrespect Nkrumah will face the consequences of his actions.

“Nkrumah has done so much for the country. I was misconstrued, but I apologised to Ghanaians and I stand here before you to apologise for my comments again, forgive me, we’re all one people,” NAPO said.

In response, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua accepted the apology.

“NAPO’s comments received wide condemnation from Ghanaians because it was uncalled for. We hail the actions of Ghanaians, we thank them. We need to recognise that Nkrumah did a great job for the country.

“We’re a peaceful people, we don’t like violence, and we don’t want a situation where chaos will erupt in Ghana because of the Nzema people. We heard that NAPO apologised to Ghanaians for his comments. But he needed to come to Nzema to personally apologise to the traditional leaders and re-affirm his regrets.

“Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs, this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”

NAPO is not arrogant but brave – Denkyirahemaa

The queen mother of Denkyira, Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III, has strongly denied allegations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) is arrogant.

During Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s visit to the Boa-Amponsem Palace in Dunkwa-On-Offin as part of his campaign tour in the Central and Ashanti regions, the queen mother addressed the issue, explaining that his courage is often mistaken for arrogance.

She noted that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, an Ashanti royal with ties to Denkyira, reflects the bravery for which Denkyira people are known.

His boldness in tackling challenges has led some to wrongly perceive him as arrogant.

In his remarks, Dr. Opoku Prempeh shared that his royal upbringing has taught him to uphold the truth, which might sometimes be interpreted as arrogance.

He reassured that he remains committed to serving with humility and focusing on the nation’s development.

  • Napo rundown Nkrumah to please the UP tradition, they did it for years – Dr Sekou Nkrumah

Napo rundown Nkrumah to please the UP tradition, they did it for years – Dr Sekou Nkrumah

Dr Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has criticized the NPP vice presidential nominee for making belittling remarks about his father, calling the comments ridiculous.

Speaking on Joy News PM Express on Tuesday, Dr Sekou Nkrumah suggested that former Energy and Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, was pandering to his political base.

“I understand what he meant by trying to please his masters coming from the United Party (UP) tradition…that’s what they have done for years, running down Nkrumah,” Dr Sekou Nkrumah stated.

During his introduction as the running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Opoku Prempeh praised President Akufo-Addo, claiming no president had developed the nation like him, including Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah…no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Opoku Prempeh asserted.

However, Dr Sekou Nkrumah strongly disagreed. He expressed concern over the denigration of a global icon who was even honored with the African of the Millennium Award, surpassing Nelson Mandela.

“If somebody’s running down Nkrumah that way, I just couldn’t figure out what was going on, honestly, in his mind, on his mind,” he said.

Dr Sekou Nkrumah acknowledged the historical rivalry between the CPP and UP but emphasized that Nkrumah’s global stature made such criticisms embarrassing on the international stage.

“From the Ghanaian point of view, I had lived through and understood a division in our country between CPP and UP, the rivalry and so but for an outsider who sees Nkrumah in a larger-than-life light, I felt so embarrassed,” he explained.

He understood Opoku Prempeh’s motives, suggesting he was merely pleasing his political patrons.

“He was just trying to please his masters who have put him in this high position to represent them, so he was just playing to the gallery. Remember that after the 1966 coup, Nkrumah’s name was dragged into the gutters?”

Dr Sekou Nkrumah highlighted the enduring legacy of his father’s projects, such as the Akosombo Dam, despite their neglect after the coup.

“Even the things Nkrumah did and the physical things that he left behind, again, a lot of it was neglected after the coup but we still benefit from things like the Akosombo Dam,” he noted.

He also mentioned feeling inspired by his father’s visionary ideas whenever he drove through Tema, recognizing the lasting impact of Nkrumah’s infrastructure projects and ideas that helped decolonize Africa.

“The infrastructure that he left behind up to today, what have we done really beyond the significant things that he did? Not much. Yes, others came to do a bit, but Nkrumah left so much of a physical legacy, let alone his ideas that helped decolonize Africa,” he concluded.

Let’s support NAPO, he will deliver – Okuapemhene to Ghanaians

The Okuapemhene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, has urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) and cast their votes in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming general elections.

He praised the NPP flagbearer and his running mate for seeking the guidance and blessings of traditional and religious leaders before starting their campaigns, highlighting their humility and respect for tradition.

“I know you are humble, judging from your background as a royal. All we are looking for from you is to be forthright and candid in all your dealings. If you have accepted being the running mate of Dr Bawumia, then you have to be his partner to do all the necessary work for him to succeed,” he urged.

Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III commended Dr. Prempeh’s humility and royal background and urged him to be forthright and transparent in his efforts. He emphasized the importance of Dr. Prempeh fully supporting Dr. Bawumia as his running mate to ensure their success.

“If you have been chosen as the running mate, it means all of us will rely on you and the leader. It also means that you have to be the backbone of the leader to ensure victory is achieved. I strongly believe that when the NPP wins power, you will empower traditional leaders to reposition them in the development agenda of the country,” he emphasised.

The Okuapemhene encouraged Dr. Prempeh and his team to effectively promote President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to secure a strong voter turnout for the NPP.

“It is because of your hard work for the party and country that you have been chosen to partner with Dr. Bawumia, and I strongly believe that you will deliver,” he noted.

These remarks were made during Dr. Prempeh’s courtesy visit to the Okuapemhene at his residence in Akropong on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III praised the initiative to involve chieftaincy and religious leadership in national development, led by Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Prempeh.

He noted that Dr. Prempeh’s recognition of the role of traditional rulers in Ghana’s history demonstrates their commitment to empowering these institutions if given the mandate.

He congratulated Dr. Prempeh on his appointment as the NPP’s running mate, acknowledging the significant achievement and hard work behind it. He expressed confidence in Dr. Prempeh’s ability to support Dr. Bawumia and deliver victory for the party.

The Okuapemhene urged Dr. Prempeh to continue working diligently to help Dr. Bawumia win and secure the NPP’s position.

In response, Dr. Prempeh acknowledged the crucial role of traditional leaders in Ghana’s independence struggle and their ongoing prayers for peace, unity, and development.

He assured the traditional leaders that the NPP would recognize and enhance their contributions to national development if elected.

Dr. Prempeh also introduced the NPP’s parliamentary candidates for Akuapem South, Eric Apeadu Yeboah; Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku; and Okere, Daniel Nana Addo Kenneth, and requested the Okuapemhene’s support for these candidates.

NAPO asked chiefs to contribute to development, not join political parties – Fiifi Boafo clarifies

Fiifi Boafo, spokesperson for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, has clarified that Dr. Prempeh’s request for chiefs to weigh in on political matters does not violate Ghana’s constitution.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, during a meeting with the Nungua Traditional Council, encouraged traditional leaders to participate in political discussions, emphasizing their crucial role in Ghana’s development.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Fiifi Boafo stressed that Dr. Prempeh’s request aims at fostering collective progress rather than challenging constitutional principles.

Mr Boafo explained that Dr. Opoku Prempeh seeks robust input from traditional authorities on critical issues like natural resource management to ensure that decisions benefit the broader society rather than just politicians.

The spokesperson reiterated that NAPO, is not urging chiefs to align with political parties but to offer their valuable perspectives as important stakeholders in Ghana’s development.

“He was very categorically about it. He said that he’s not asking any chief to put on the political party colour, rather what he is asking for is that if there’s a proposal, for instance, how we handle our resources, for example, mineral resources, how must we handle it?

“There must be a strong position from our traditional authorities in indicating the things that we think we should do as a country to help develop the country.”

“He’s of the view that for example, the constitution states that when resources are found in the land, the resources work with the state, whereas if it was a case of the chief giving out the land for someone to farm, and the chief has shares in there, but then when it happens in the case of natural resources, the opportunity given to the chief is limited. Is that the best way to go?”

“These are some of the things he wants us to look out for as a people going forward, and not just limit everything to the hands of the political class, who take the decision and seek implementation, but rather as key stakeholders their voices are heard and they must be involved in the development of our country.”

Don’t wear party colours but speak on political issues – Napo tells chiefs

Running mate for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has called upon traditional leaders across Ghana to actively engage in the nation’s political discourse.

Emphasizing the significant role that chiefs play in shaping the country, NAPO highlighted the necessity for their voices to be heard on national issues.

During a recent meeting with the Nungua Traditional Council in Accra, Dr. Opoku Prempeh urged the electorate in the area to consider voting for the NPP and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December elections.

The former Energy Minister stressed that traditional rulers, as agents of development, have the right to express their opinions on political matters.

“Chiefs played a vital role in the fight for the country’s independence and, as such, should not be barred from expressing their opinions on political issues,” NAPO stated.

He underscored the importance of involving traditional leaders in political discussions to ensure their valuable perspectives contribute to the nation’s progress.

NAPO emphasized that his campaign approach is unique, focusing on engaging with royal houses and seeking their guidance and prayers.

“My campaign is different, I visit every royal house to tell them one thing. I tell them to help us, pray for us, guide us, counsel us, and give the direction to us. So, the Ghana that we’re developing is a Ghana that will be developed in freedom,” he remarked.

Addressing the chiefs directly, NAPO implored them to recognize their intrinsic right to speak on political issues, regardless of party affiliations.

“I implore every traditional leader, the elders that this game called politics, have you realised that the politicians have turned round to tell you not to do politics? If we didn’t do politics, how did we come by independence? I’m not saying wear NPP colours or NDC colours,” he clarified.

He encouraged the chiefs to provide honest and constructive feedback to politicians, advocating for the development of their communities.

“I’m saying that whether it is NPP or NDC, it’s your right to tell us what is right. It is not our right to tell you not to be part of us, it is your right, to crave it. The people of Nungua should crave Nungua, it’s theirs. Everything God put on Nungua was for the development of Nungua,” he affirmed.

“Confident” NAPO will soon shame his critics – Farouk Mahama on arrogant tag

MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has predicted that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, will soon shut all of his critics.

According to asaaseradio.com, Mahama is confident that NAPO’s selection will enhance the party’s vote count, particularly in their stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

He also asserted that people often mistake NAPO’s attitude for arrogance, but he disagrees, saying that “He speaks his mind, just like me.

He doesn’t know how to pretend; NAPO speaks his mind and he is a confident person. So, he has been misconstrued to be arrogant.”

Aliu Mahama said this during a TownHall Talk on Asaase 99.5.

He continued by saying that “Somebody who has been trained by royals can never have any sign or blood of arrogance in his system because his father was a humble man.

In politics, it is not all that everybody says about you, is right. But I believe it rather helps to shape him.”

Bawumia and Napo can’t win the election for NPP fairly – Nyaho Tamakloe claims

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed significant doubts about the party’s chances of success in the upcoming December elections.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned the viability of the ticket comprising NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

In an exclusive interview with JoySports’ Atsu Tamakloe, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, “That ticket I personally don’t believe can win a genuine election in this country.”

He suggested that the choice of running mate might hinder the ticket’s success.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also implied that Dr. Bawumia did not have a significant role in selecting his running mate, which he believes will affect the ticket’s overall effectiveness.

“And as I predicted earlier, that there is no way Bawumia will have a free hand to pick his running mate? Never. I said it earlier, I have the tape. [I said] his running mate was picked for him. And that’s exactly what happened,” he asserted.

He further questioned the rationale behind not allowing Dr. Bawumia to choose his own running mate, implying that this decision could create a lack of synergy between the two candidates.

“Why should Bawumia not be allowed to pick his own running mate? Whether he will gel with his running mate, that is his palava,” he added.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also criticized recent controversial statements made by Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, regarding Kwame Nkrumah. He suggested that Napo’s remarks have led to significant backlash, which could be challenging for him to overcome.

“Certain mistakes are made and they are difficult to correct. So that mistake made by Napo, look at the reaction as a result of his statement that has sort of degenerated almost everywhere, even outside the country. Nigerians are even talking about it,” he explained.

Additionally, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe issued a warning to the Electoral Commission, cautioning that any attempts to manipulate election results could have severe consequences.

“Any tricks they will play to change the results will lead this country into a serious disaster,” he warned.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dispelled rumours of internal discord regarding the party’s running mate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO.

In an interview with Onua FM on July 15, 2024, Wontumi affirmed his unwavering support for NAPO and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate.

Addressing speculation of rifts within the party, Wontumi clarified, “There are no internal conflicts. Bawumia was bold in selecting his running mate, NAPO, from the Ashanti region, and we have supported this decision wholeheartedly. We are not just supporting them; we are committed to ensuring their victory in the 2024 elections.”

He emphasized his role in the selection process, stating, “Wontumi was among the people who endorsed NAPO. Politics is a democracy, and I can confirm that I was one of the people who endorsed NAPO. So, between NAPO and me, the impression is what is giving the NDC a problem because they thought we would be divided.”

Further addressing his own aspirations, Wontumi humorously remarked, “No, me as Wontumi, I don’t want the running mate position. I can’t even speak better English to become a running mate. I have a limit to my English, so I won’t go and say anything for me to become a topic of discussion because of my English.”

Comparing NAPO to a football legend, Wontumi likened him to Ronaldo, emphasizing the misconceptions sometimes imposed on him.

“And I see NAPO as Ronaldo, of which some Ghanaians want to conclude and change his words. What he hasn’t said, they want to impose on him,” he added.

NAPO hailing from here does not guarantee that we will vote for you – Kumasi market women

Traders at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging Ashanti region voters to explore other options in the upcoming December 2024 general elections.

Their discontent is partly due to the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as the running mate for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At a press conference on July 15, 2024, the market women voiced their frustration, accusing the NPP of neglecting the region despite its longstanding support for the party.

In their message to the NPP, the Racecourse market women warned that,

“If Bawumia thinks we will vote for him because he is from the Ashanti Region, then he should forget about it. We are no more going to vote based on where we come from but rather who can bring development to Asanteman”.

The traders pointed to the halted construction of critical projects, such as the Kumasi Central Market and the Krofrom Market, as the basis for their grievances.

Spokesperson for the traders, Christabel Amoah, stressed that although Dr. Opoku Prempeh is from the Ashanti Region, his nearly two-decade tenure as MP has not resulted in significant benefits for the community.

“We don’t have a proper place to use as our market. We live in water. Racecourse has been deserted. We stay under the sun from morning till dusk for our daily bread. Sometimes we are overrun by vehicles and some even lose their lives through it.

“NAPO has been MP for 16 years and the abandoned Krofrom Market is in his constituency so we expected him to fix it so we could use it but he didn’t. And we don’t expect him to address our problems at this juncture when he has been appointed as running mate,” onuaonline.com quoted her to have said during the press conference.

The traders also emphasized their lack of support during crises, such as fire outbreaks, noting that the MP has not engaged with them to help find solutions.

“A lot has happened in our market including fire outbreaks but there has not been a single instance where he has come to us to share in our problems to help solve them” she added.

FACT CHECK: Napo hasn’t resigned as Bawumia’s running mate

GhanaFact.com has investigated a widely circulated press statement claiming the resignation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, as the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The media house confirmed on July 16, 2024, that the letter alleging Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s resignation is not authentic and does not originate from the ruling party.

The press release in question, adorned with the NPP logo and Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s name, purported his resignation following controversial remarks he made about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The statement claimed Dr. Opoku Prempeh made the decision after reflecting on public reactions and consulting with family members, including the Asantehene, HRM Otumfour Osei Tutu.

According to GhanaFact’s investigation, the press release has been widely shared on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), garnering significant attention with over 91,000 views, 729 likes, and 185 comments. Various accounts amplified the false claim with captions suggesting his resignation was in the best interest of the country.

Background checks by GhanaFact revealed that neither the NPP nor Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s official spokesperson, Fiifi Boafo, have endorsed or published any resignation letter. Fiifi Boafo explicitly refuted the press release, labeling it as entirely false.

In conclusion, GhanaFact rates the claim as false and emphasizes that the purported resignation letter is fabricated. There is no credible evidence or official statement corroborating the misinformation spread on social media.

Napo engages Manya Krobo chief ahead of 2024 polls

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as Napo and the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid a courtesy call on Nene Sakite II, the Paramount Chief of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area.

The visit aimed to seek the chief’s prayers and guidance as Dr. Prempeh steps into his new role.

In his address, Dr. Prempeh emphasized the crucial role of traditional leaders in governance and national development.

“It is high time politicians paid attention to the important roles that chiefs play in governance to foster development,” he stated.

Napo, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, noted the importance of receiving blessings and guidance from chiefs across the country after being nominated as the NPP‘s vice-presidential candidate.

“Without the chiefs, it would be difficult to promote national unity, stability, growth, and development,” Dr. Prempeh remarked.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of chiefs to the nation’s independence struggles and called for them to be granted the respect and dignity they deserve to avoid conflicts.

Dr. Prempeh also appealed to the people of Manya Krobo to support the NPP in the upcoming general election to ensure their voices are represented in governance. He underscored the importance of their votes in shaping the future of the country.

In response, Nene Sakite II, who also serves as the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, highlighted the historical neglect of the chieftaincy institution by successive governments.

He urged that issues communicated by chiefs on behalf of their citizens be addressed promptly and not overlooked. Nene Sakite advised Dr. Prempeh to maintain his respect for chiefs even after being elected as Vice President.

The paramount chief praised Dr. Prempeh for his visit and recognition of the traditional leaders’ roles in governance, noting that it reflected Napo’s royal heritage.

    NAPO’s apology wasn’t genuine – Lecturer

Former head of the Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has cast doubt on the sincerity of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s (NAPO) apology.

“It is not sincere; the party leadership has asked you to apologise. The regional chairman of the Ashanti Region is also stoking the fire with his comments, and nobody is saying you have to apologise. You have to remain sincere. It is win at all costs for the party; they have forgotten what the truth is,” he said.

Speaking on TV3’s Newday on Monday, July 15, Dr. Baah criticized the apology as being prompted by party directives rather than genuine remorse.

“They have told lies for a long time; they do not know what truth is. How can a party make good decisions if the leaders lack wisdom? Every intention is to make money, and no wisdom is applied. Some people behave as if the country belongs to them,” he stated.

During a ceremony on July 12 to introduce him as the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpass those of any president since independence.

His remarks were widely criticized as a political misstep, prompting him to issue an apology through a later statement in response to the backlash.

Bawumia’s plan to integrate chieftaincy into governance commendable – Konor of Manya Krobo

The Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, has endorsed Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposal to integrate traditional leadership into modern governance, describing it as a commendable initiative.

“The stability of this country depends on the stability of the chieftaincy institution,” he noted.

Expressing his hope for an NPP victory in the upcoming elections to implement the policy, he emphasized the crucial role of the chieftaincy institution in ensuring national stability.

Nene Sakite II made these remarks during a visit by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, to his palace in Manya Krobo on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Highlighting the proximity of traditional rulers to the people compared to politicians, the Chief praised Dr. Bawumia’s vision to align traditional leadership with contemporary governance practices for enhanced community development and efficient administration.

He emphasized the need to integrate traditional wisdom and cultural values into governance to promote sustainable development and inclusive decision-making processes.

Nene Sakite II expressed optimism that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy, as a royal, would contribute significantly to realizing Dr. Bawumia’s vision.

“If you work harder, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will be the next Vice President of Ghana,” he urged the party followers.

He advised Dr. Prempeh and NPP supporters against complacency, urging them to work diligently to convey their achievements and future plans convincingly to the Ghanaian electorate.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh affirmed Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to empowering the chieftaincy institution in governance, stressing the importance of collaboration among government, religious leaders, and traditional authorities for national unity and progress.

“I know that Dr. Bawumia will not renege on his promise. In due course, the role of the chieftaincy institution will change, and traditional leaders will be asked to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation in the era of Dr. Bawumia as President of Ghana,” he noted.

He added, “As politicians, we must understand that for the unity, stability, progress, and development of this country, government, religious leaders, and the chieftaincy institution must be coordinated effectively, build consensus to bring proper development to the people of Ghana. I say this because we work closely with the people; hence, the need for proper synergies to be built to facilitate their wellbeing.”

He underscored the historic leadership roles of chiefs and religious leaders, advocating for mutual respect and cooperation among all stakeholders to foster societal advancement.

Therefore, “as politicians, we must not attempt to raise ourselves higher and laud it over the people; instead, we must all see ourselves playing different, equally important roles to make society better.”

  • Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

In a recent poll conducted by GhanaWeb, Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has emerged as the most popular president in the country’s history.

The poll, conducted from Thursday, July 11, 2024, to Sunday, July 14, 2024, drew participation from approximately 17,000 readers of GhanaWeb.

The poll was prompted by remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (popularly known as NAPO), the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who asserted that the current President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has outperformed all past presidents, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Out of the respondents, over 60%—representing more than 10,000 participants—voted Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the best president in Ghana’s history.

His legacy as the country’s founding father and his role in leading Ghana to independence clearly resonated with the majority of voters.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured the second position in the poll with over 14% of respondents (2,421 participants) recognizing him as the second best president.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who NAPO suggested had surpassed Nkrumah in achievements, placed third in the poll with 1,964 participants, amounting to nearly 12% of respondents endorsing him as the third best president.

Former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings followed in the fourth and fifth positions respectively, with Kufuor garnering over 8% of the vote and Rawlings receiving nearly 3%.

The late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, who served as president from 2009 until his untimely death in 2012, ranked sixth in the poll with nearly 2% of respondents affirming his legacy.

Dr. Hilla Limann, who served briefly as president from 1979 to 1981, rounded out the poll in seventh place, receiving less than 1% of the votes.

The results underscore a strong sentiment among participants for Nkrumah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s history, despite differing views expressed by some political figures regarding contemporary achievements.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area have called on Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to make his way to Nzema and apologise for the comparison between the late Nkrumah and Akufo-Addo after his recent apology communicated in a statement.

Take advantage of gov’t’s skills training programmes – Napo tells youth

Vice-Presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on the youth of Ghana to take full advantage of the government’s skills training programmes to secure their futures.

This appeal was made during the annual church conference and the unveiling of a new constitution of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana on Sunday, July 14.

Addressing the congregation, Dr. Opoku Prempeh also known as Napo, highlighted the importance of practical skills in today’s rapidly evolving job market.

He underscored the significance of the government’s Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, which are tailored to provide young people with industry-relevant skills necessary for sustainable livelihoods.

He encouraged the youth to enroll in these TVET initiatives, emphasizing their potential to improve employment opportunities and foster economic independence.

“The NPP government has invested heavily in TVET. Between 2017 and 2020, we invested over US$700 million in upgrading, retooling, and refurbishing TVET facilities at both pre-tertiary and tertiary levels to make them fit for purpose in order to deliver quality skills training that are critical for our industrial agenda as a nation. It is essential that you take advantage of these opportunities,” Dr. Prempeh stated.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh pointed out that equipping oneself with practical skills not only empowers individuals but also contributes to national development by addressing skills gaps in various sectors.

He highlighted Ghana’s advantage of having a youthful and energetic population, willing to be trained and ready to work, which can effectively address youth unemployment and help young citizens lead sustainable lives.

“Ghana is blessed with a youthful and energetic population, willing to be trained and ready to work, which can address our youth unemployment challenges and help our young citizens live sustainable lives. With the right skills, you’ll be empowered to start your own businesses, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s development,” he added.

Come and apologise for disrespecting Nzemas – Chiefs tell Napo over Nkrumah comment

The chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area, the birthplace of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, have firmly rejected the apology issued by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, for his recent remarks about Dr. Nkrumah.

During his introduction event in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo had outperformed all previous Ghanaian presidents in terms of development, including Dr. Nkrumah. This comment sparked widespread criticism, leading Dr. Opoku Prempeh to issue a written apology.

However, in a press conference held over the weekend, Nana Kwasi Kutuah V, speaking on behalf of the Nzema chiefs, emphasized that the written apology was insufficient. The chiefs insist that Dr. Opoku Prempeh must personally visit Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, to offer a formal apology.

Nana Kwasi Kutuah V highlighted the profound respect and significance Dr. Nkrumah holds for the Nzema people and the entire nation of Ghana. He described any negative remarks about the late President as deeply offensive to the community.

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s statement was a disrespect to all Ghanaians, particularly to the Nzema people, the Western Region, and Nkrofulman,” Nana Kwasi Kutuah V stated. “We acknowledge his written apology, but we demand he come here in person to apologize to us, the chiefs, and Dr. Nkrumah’s family.”

The Nzema chiefs believe that a personal apology at Nkroful, a place symbolic of Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy, is crucial to restoring respect and goodwill.

They assert that this gesture would appropriately address the community’s grievances and honor their revered leader’s memory.

I missed NAPO’s unveiling because I was working on a report for Bawumia – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has explained the absence of key New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures from the event unveiling Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh(NAPO), as the party’s running mate in Kumasi.

In a recent interview shared on YouTube, Mensah-Bonsu clarified that his absence, along with that of the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu (Joe Wise), was due to their commitments to parliamentary and party responsibilities.

Mensah-Bonsu revealed that NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia tasked him with drafting the party’s manifesto for the 2024 elections.

This role required him to be engaged in intensive work sessions, including a crucial meeting the day before the unveiling ceremony.

“The work that the vice president tasked me with as the manifesto committee head required me to work with the team to draft the report for him. We worked on Monday, the day before the unveiling.

“We had other discussions that we needed to include in the manifesto, so we had to stay and work on those things because Bawumia needed such information for his regional tours a few days after the event.

“I have already informed my younger brother, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, about why I couldn’t go,” he said.

Mensah-Bonsu stated that he had informed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh about his inability to attend the event.

He also mentioned that Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, was engaged in parliamentary duties, specifically related to the National Service Authority Bill, where his presence was crucial as the sponsoring minister.

“I was in the office working during the time my younger brother NAPO was being unveiled. I was in the office working when they called from parliament, asking me to come help with the National Service Authority bill.

“So, I went to parliament and met former mayor Osei Assibey, who is the chief executive at the National Service Secretariat. He told me they had a problem with the bill, and Hon. Osei Owusu had told him to call me to come and help.

“The sponsoring minister for the national service is Adutwum, so he was also supposed to be in parliament as the Minister of Education. Bagbin was also occupied with other matters, so he had summoned Osei Owusu to sit in for the proceedings. When I arrived, I realized Osei Owusu was the one presiding,” he asserted.

Mr Mensah-Bonsu further noted that the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Bekwai Constituency, Joseph Osei Owusu, was also engaged in parliamentary proceedings, presiding over the session due to other commitments of Speaker Bagbin.

“We sat and worked on the bill, and even when I wanted to visit the washroom, Osei Assibey thought I was running away and had to follow me.

“Adutwum had to be there because of the national service bill, and Osei Owusu was also presiding that day, which is why he couldn’t go. I haven’t asked them yet, but based on what I saw, this is why I am saying this,” he added.

NAPO was unveiled as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate on June 9, 2024, in Kumasi.

You claim Akufo-Addo is the best president yet Ghana is in a mess – Lecturer to NAPO

Former head of the Political Science Department at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, for his recent statements comparing the legacies of President Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling event in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outshone Dr. Nkrumah in terms of achievements.

“Since independence in 1957, we’ve not had any president who has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

Dr. Amoako Baah condemned these remarks, labeling them disrespectful and lacking factual basis.

In an interview on Onua FM on July 11, 2024, Dr. Amoako Baah stressed that even President Akufo-Addo himself would disagree with NAPO’s assertion, stating, “Anybody who says that what NAPO said is good is a liar because this is called an unforced error”.

“It is a flawed judgment. You have become a minister for eight years to gain experience, so you can thank Nana Akufo-Addo for allowing you to serve and gain experience.

“But you can’t say he has performed better than Nkrumah because of what he did for you. Even Akufo-Addo himself won’t agree with what you are saying. He will never agree that he has performed better than Nkrumah”.

Dr. Baah expressed frustration over the country’s current economic challenges, criticizing NAPO for diverting attention away from pressing issues with unfounded comparisons.

He pointedly remarked, “Instead of addressing how to solve our problems, NAPO is engaging in baseless claims. His statement simply does not hold true.”

Meanwhile, NAPO has issued an apology for his comments comparing the achievements of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to those of President Akufo-Addo, clarifying that his remarks were personal opinions and expressing regret for any discomfort caused.

“The country is drowning in debt, and you are there saying this nonsense. Talk about how you will solve problems; that is what we want to hear about; what he is saying is not true, so he shouldn’t have said it. Does he have eyes different from what I have and those of Ghanaians?” he said.

“If he has done well, why is the country suffering? He should explain. Does he live in a different country? Best president, and they have stolen all the money, best president, and we are suffering,” he added.

NAPO’s remarks have triggered widespread criticism, prompting calls from the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for his resignation due to the controversy they have ignited.

“He has apologised; let’s move on” – Gyampo on NAPO over Nkrumah’s comments

Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has urged the Ghanaian public to accept the apology issued by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, recently apologized for his remarks comparing President Akufo-Addo’s contributions to those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In a statement on July 12, NAPO clarified that his comments were not intended to belittle Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” his statement said.

The former Energy Minister added that he’s noted the concerns raised after his statement and “regret any discomfort caused.”

NAPO’s apology came days after his statement has been met with condemnation, even from some party stalwarts.

He noted that his comment reflects his personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact.
Commenting on this on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday July 13, Prof Gaympi said “he has apologised; the fact that he had apologized and the public revulsion should serve as a guide. I think let us move on.”

He further stated that ”the outcome of 2024 have already been decided by Ghanaians in their hearts and minds.”

NAPO-Nkrumah comments : Kwaku Baako’s wife blasts him for arguing ‘anyhow’

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako, recently apologised to his wife and another individual after mistakenly downplaying the recency of a controversial comment made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This incident occurred following NAPO’s controversial remark during his official introduction in Kumasi on June 9, 2024.

NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo surpasses Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in spearheading development in the country’s history.

Kweku Baako explained that, due to his inability to monitor the event in real-time, he initially dismissed concerns brought to him by his wife and another lady, believing the comments were not recent but from years ago during discussions surrounding the Free SHS policy.

Reflecting on the incident during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on July 11, 2024, Baako explained, “I couldn’t monitor what happened in Kumasi, so in the evening, I was at the base, and Aisha called me and said that this is what NAPO has said and she felt so uncomfortable with it. So, I was like, Are you sure? And she said yes; NAPO has said that.

“So, I told her that NAPO had said the same thing some years ago about the Free SHS policy, so it is not current, but it was years ago. We ended up arguing because she was insisting that it was current.”

He continued, “Then I had another text message from Yaaba Bonney Coffee Shop, so I told her that this is an old script, so she should forget because it was mischievous.

“But late at night, when I scanned Facebook and saw the video, I realised that I had made a mistake by misinforming the two ladies.

I have sent an apology to my wife, and she said she wouldn’t accept it because I argue by heart without background. And I have sent Yaaba also a message for misrepresenting the situation.”

No NAPO campaign here if he wouldn’t offer a better apology – Western Region Concerned Youth

A group named Concerned Youth of Western Region has criticised Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh over his apology for claiming that President Akufo-Addo is a superior president compared to the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his outdoor ceremony, the former education minister asserted that no Ghanaian president had outperformed Nkrumah, a statement that sparked backlash across political divides, leading to demands for an apology.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh later visited some chiefs in the Western Region, reiterating that his comments were truthful but misinterpreted.

On July 11, 2024, he issued a statement clarifying that his comments were personal opinions and not meant to disparage Nkrumah, and he apologised.

However, the Concerned Youth of the Western Region deemed his apology insincere and demanded a public apology.

Prof. Boakye Yiadom, a group member, insisted that Dr. Opoku Prempeh should apologise unreservedly so Ghanaians would recognise his repentance.

He also urged the chiefs in the Western Region to prevent Dr. Opoku Prempeh and his party from campaigning in the region unless a public apology is issued.

He maintained that “we believe that NAPO should come again and apologise unreservedly for us to know that he has repented… We will not accept his apology.

We believe that Western regional chiefs should come together and also protest strongly against Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to render an unqualified apology to the Western region, the people, and Ghana as a whole because he is entitled to organise his campaign in the region.”

CPP refuses to accept NAPO’s apology over claims it doesn’t bear his signature

Convention People’s Party has reacted to NPP running mate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s apology following comments made at his unveiling, which they consider denigrating the achievements of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The secretary to the Independent Committee of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Botsio, speaking on JoyNews, questioned the authenticity of the apology letter, which has since gone viral.

According to him, the apology statement released on the official X account of NAPO does not bear his signature, thus asserting that the letter may be fake, myjoyonline.com reports.

“However, this apology letter does not bear the signature or any other signature so to say we can respond adequately to it will be an exercise in futility.”

NAPO, at his unveiling, said, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say that from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

In a statement issued on July 10, the CPP demanded NAPO’s immediate resignation from his roles as running mate and Energy Minister. The party also threatened to launch a nationwide protest if he did not resign honorably.

Subsequently, a letter claiming to be an apology from NAPO has surfaced.

His apology said, “My statement last Tuesday, 9th July, in Kumasi on the performance of President Akufo-Addo has elicited varied reactions. The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor. I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he apologised.

Frema Opare at loggerheads with Bawumia for naming Napo as running mate – Bobbie Ansah claims

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bobbie Ansah, has revealed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Chief of Staff Frema Opare are giving each other a cold shoulder.

Mr. Ansah mentioned that the grudge between the duo is as a result of the party’s decision to elect the then Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO as its running mate.

According to him, the selection of NAPO has brought conflict within the party.

NAPO in recent times, have received backlash from majority Ghanaians who accuse him of arrogance.

In their opinion, NAPO do possess the qualities of a good leader due to his perceived lack of communication skills.

NAPO in an interview during the inauguration of NPP Campaign Team in the Ashanti Region, urged individuals calling on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for a load-shedding timetable, to draw their own timetable if they feel it’s necessary.

“Let those who want the timetable bring it. I don’t know of any timetable because the ECG has said it is not necessary. Why would someone just wish evil for the country?” he asked.

Recently, NAPO had claimed that President Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpasses those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other former presidents.

He stated, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.

However, Mr Ansah, noted that the NPP should consider themselves losers in the upcoming December polls, as the majority of Ghanaians will vote against them.

He added that a recent survey conducted at the Jubilee House showed that sixty percent of its staff are not supporting the party.

    Kufuor’s $1 to GHC1 administration can’t be compared to Nkrumah’s – Kwaku Manu

Actor Kwaku Manu has criticized Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, the running mate of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), for suggesting that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has surpassed Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in achievements.

Kwaku Manu emphasized that President Nana Addo cannot be compared to former president John Agyekum Kufour, who maintained a stable exchange rate of $1 to GH₵1 during his tenure. He pointed out that even President Kufour never sought to equate his accomplishments with those of Kwame Nkrumah.

“Even our former president, Kufour, who maintained a one-dollar, one-cedi rate, never compared himself to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Not once. Listen to me, he never did that,” Kwaku Manu stated in a live TikTok video shared on X, formerly Twitter.

Kwaku Manu underscored Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s role as the pioneer of Ghana’s post-independence industrialization, responsible for numerous enduring infrastructures and factories.

“For instance, the Tema motorway, built over 50 years ago, is still in use today. Nowadays, governments construct roads that deteriorate within three days,” he remarked.

Kwaku Manu questioned NAPO’s comparison, highlighting, “Are you trying to compare yourself to Kwame Nkrumah? He established a shoe factory, I’m talking about what he did, not what he promised to do. He also set up a car tire factory; where is that factory now?”

Secretary to the Independent Committee of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Botsio, has indicated that the party will not react to the apology attributed to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, until the statement bears his signature.

This follows controversy sparked by remarks made by Dr. Opoku Prempeh during his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi, where he suggested that no president has contributed to Ghana’s development like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, including Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In response to the backlash on social media, Dr. Opoku Prempeh reportedly issued an apology in writing. However, Mr. Botsio clarified on JoyNews that the apology statement lacked a signature, making it difficult for the CPP to consider it as an official response.

“However, this apology letter does not bear the signature or any other signature so to say we can respond adequately to it will be an exercise in futility,” Mr. Botsio remarked during the interview.

He emphasized that without a signed statement or a direct verbal apology from Dr. Opoku Prempeh addressing the issue, the CPP would withhold any formal response.

Flashback: Aside your quick temper, you’ve not changed – Kwami Sefa Kayi to Napo

A video has emerged featuring Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, during an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show.

In the clip, the host posed a critical question to NAPO, asking whether politicians and government officials are aware that their tenure will eventually end and if they consider the implications of their decisions and actions while in office.

Kwame’s question stemmed from a story told by NAPO on how his pastor who visited him on a Friday to invite him fo a harvest service died late Sunday while resting from leading the church’s harvest service.

He advised the need to consider one’s ways life comes with so many uncertainties.

Consequently, Sefa Kayi inquired if holding power influences their personalities including NAPO or if they remain genuine and honest in all their dealings.

Citing his relationship with the host, he threw the question back at Sefa Kayi to give his opinion of his personality whether he has changed since assuming power.

In response, Kwame specifically addressed NAPO’s temper, mentioning that while NAPO has largely remained the same, his irritability and occasional sudden outbursts are notable exceptions.

“NAPO, apart from being easily irritated, you haven’t changed. Your temper is the only problem. Sometimes, out of the blue, you can just explode,” said Sefa Kayi.

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer (NPP) for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, has issued an apology following a controversial comparison he made between President Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Napo’s comments, made during his unveiling as the NPP’s vice-presidential candidate, sparked criticism from various quarters, including political figures and citizens.

In his statement on Tuesday, Napo suggested that President Akufo-Addo had surpassed all previous Ghanaian leaders, including Dr. Nkrumah, in terms of achievements.

This remark was met with backlash from many Ghanaians, including Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who represents the Ellembelle constituency, the birthplace of Dr. Nkrumah, and leaders of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

Following the public outcry, Dr. Opoku Prempeh issued an apology on Friday, July 12. In his statement, he clarified that his remarks were not intended to undermine the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah or any former Ghanaian heads of state.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had,” Napo explained. “I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor.”

Napo needs to see a psychiatrist to cure his inferiority complex – Nyaho Tamakloe

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, a revered founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has boldly suggested that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, seek psychiatric help to address what he perceives as an inferiority complex.

This striking recommendation follows NAPO’s recent statement praising President Nana Akufo-Addo as Ghana’s best leader since independence, which Dr. Tamakloe found disrespectful to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, Dr. Tamakloe did not mince words, stating, “It is not arrogance; it is inferiority complex, and he needs the help of a psychiatrist.”

He expressed concern over NAPO’s behavior and comments, suggesting that professional psychiatric assistance is necessary for his mental well-being.

His statement, according to Dr. Tamakloe, undermines the significant contributions of former President Kufuor. “The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologize to him,” Dr. Tamakloe insisted.

He further elaborated on Kufuor’s legacy, noting the state of the nation when Kufuor assumed office and the progress made during his presidency.

“When President Kufuor took over this country, it was in shambles. He was able to straighten things out,” Dr. Tamakloe emphasized, urging NAPO to show due respect and humility.

Dr. Tamakloe advised NAPO to apologize to Kufuor, describing how he should approach the former president.

“He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him, and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” he stated.

Dr. Tamakloe emphasized that without Kufuor’s leadership starting in 2000, Ghana would not have reached its current level of development.

Go and apologize to Kufuor for rubbishing his contributions to Ghana’s development – Nyaho Tamakloe to NAPO

A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, has urged the party’s running mate for the 2024 general election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to apologise to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In an interview with 3FM, Dr. Tamakloe insisted that the former energy minister should apologise to President Kufuor for belittling his contributions to Ghana’s development by claiming that President Akufo-Addo has outperformed every president in Ghana’s history.

“The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologise to him. That is the only person I want him [to go to]. He should apologise to Kufuor because when President Kufuor took over this country, this country was in shambles.

“He was able to straighten things. I wouldn’t even like to refer him to the demands that the CPP people are putting up. No, I am not a CPP man.

“I will ask him to go and apologise to Kufuor. Because without Kufuor when we took over in 2000, we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are today.”

“…He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” he stated.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, was recently nominated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling NPP, as his running mate, a choice which received the unanimous endorsement of the party’s National Executive Council.

During his official unveiling in Kumasi on Tuesday, June 9, 2024, NAPO asserted that not even Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rivals President Akufo-Addo in terms of spearheading development in the country’s history.

His statement has received widespread criticism, with some citing it as evidence of his alleged arrogance.

However, according to Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe, NAPO’s actions stem from an inferiority complex, and he suggested that NAPO seek psychiatric help.

This comes in response to Dr. Prempeh’s recent statement lauding President Nana Akufo-Addo as the best leader Ghana has had since independence, a remark that Dr. Tamakloe believes undermines Kufuor’s legacy.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, Dr. Tamakloe stressed the importance of acknowledging former President Kufuor’s significant contributions to Ghana during his tenure. He emphasized that Kufuor inherited a country in disarray and successfully restored stability and progress.

“The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologize to him. That is the only person I want him to go to,” Dr. Tamakloe insisted. He highlighted the transformative impact of Kufuor’s presidency, noting, “When President Kufuor took over this country, it was in shambles. He was able to straighten things out.”

Dr. Tamakloe firmly believes that without Kufuor’s leadership starting in 2000, Ghana would not have achieved its current progress. He advised Dr. Prempeh, known popularly as NAPO, to make amends by approaching Kufuor with humility.

“He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him, and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” Dr. Tamakloe asserted.

Former Regional Chairman of the NDC, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, now turned ‘NPP faithful’, has risen to the defence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) for his ‘not even your Nkrumah’ comments.

The former energy minister, during his grand unveiling at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, taunted the Akufo-Addo-led government as the best and one that has protected and developed Ghana more than any other president, including Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

I say from 1957 until today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… No president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

He faced heavy backlash and criticism for his ‘derogatory and disrespectful’ remarks about the former president.

However, Allotey Jacobs sees nothing wrong with NAPO’s comments. On his part, the NPP running mate spoke based on his ideology and a reaction to the NDC recently posing as the new Convention People’s Party.

“NAPO was speaking like a typical Domo person. The word is “their Kwame Nkrumah.”. Analytically, what he said was right, because if you look at the works of Akufo-Addo, the same thing they subjected Nkrumah to is exactly the same thing they have subjected Akufo-Addo to.

It has emerged that the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has the things of God at heart.

A supporter of the Energy Minister, also known as Napo, during an interview on Peace FM, noted that Dr Opoku Prempeh loved the ways of God as much that he was the Scripture Union President during his time at Prempeh College.

Napo started as a Form One student in 1980 and completed his sixth form in 1987.

In a related event, the 1985/87 Year Group of Prempeh College Old Students Association (Amanfoo 1985/87) has congratulated Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, on his selection as the running mate to the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the upcoming general election.

In a statement released on Tuesday [July 9, 2024], the association expressed their pride in NAPO’s achievements.

“It brings us great joy to see one of our classmates rise to become a Vice Presidential candidate in Ghana on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” the statement signed by Benjamin Kweku Acolatse, President of the 1985/87 year group read.

They highlighted his significant contributions to the school, including the naming of a house in his honour in 2023.

  • Comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah was needless – Kweku Baako to NAPO

Comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah was needless – Kweku Baako to NAPO

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), recently made remarks comparing President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

These remarks have drawn criticism, particularly from the Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako.

Appearing on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ Mr Kweku Baako criticized NAPO’s comparison as irrelevant and an unnecessary distraction.

Kweku Baako emphasized that while it is acceptable to highlight NPP projects and achievements under President Akufo-Addo, drawing comparisons to historical figures like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah only serves as a distraction during an election period.

“Let me be brutally frank, the comparison Napo made had no relevance. It was a needless distraction. It’s so unnecessary, completely irrelevant and needless. what is at stake right now is an election…as the running mate being outdoored; you can exalt NPP projects; President Akufo Addo’s projects, you’re entitled to that but don’t drag in another figure. Needless distraction; you don’t provide armour for your opponents or neutrals; needless and it lacks relevance…I’m disappointed” he lamented

During his unveiling in Kumasi, NAPO stated that no President, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has significantly contributed to Ghana’s development as President Akufo-Addo has.

He stated, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,”

Reacting to these comments James Kwabena Bomfeh, also known as Kabila, stated that NAPO statements were uncalled for, emphasizing the importance of respecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy and achievements in Ghana’s history.

“He goofed big time…He should not have made that statement, simply because he wouldn’t have had time to explain to the audience what he meant by the statement that Akufo Addo’s achievements surpass that of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. I believe that what added salt to injury was his comment of “your Kwame Nkrumah” which sends a wrong signal to the persona and the great achievements of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

“I want him to know and understand that, we don’t undermine Kwame Nkrumah. Admittedly, Kwame Nkrumah wasn’t a perfect human being, but he led Ghana to gain our Freedom, thereby making Ghana the first Country in sub-Sahara Africa to gain independence from colonial rulers. Beyond his great works, he has also penned down lots of articles and books more than any other President in the history of Ghana, intellectually contributing to the development of the minds of Ghanaians and the world at large, especially among the black race and the suffering people around the world” he stated.

  • How Kweku Baako had to apologize to his wife over NAPO

How Kweku Baako had to apologize to his wife over NAPO

The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, explained how he ended up apologizing to his wife over NAPO’s comment comparing Nkrumah and Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was unveiled as the NPP’s vice presidential candidate for the 2024 elections on Tuesday, May 9, 2024.

In his speech during the unveiling ceremony in Kumasi, NAPO praised Akufo-Addo as the best leader Ghana has had since independence.

Mr. Baako recounted that his wife informed him of NAPO’s statement that “from 1957 to now, whether you pick ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah… there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

Initially, Mr. Baako dismissed it as an old video resurfacing for mischief, as he had heard NAPO make a similar comment in the past.

However, when he later discovered that the comment was indeed recent, he felt compelled to apologize to his wife.

“I could not monitor any of what happened in Kumasi. But in the evening, Isha called me and told me that this is what NAPO has gone to say. “She feels uncomfortable with it.” So I asked her “are you sure?” she said ye, NAPO said this and that. Then I said I think I have heard NAPO make the same comment some years ago when there were conversations about FREE education. We ended up having an argument because she was insisting this was a current statement. But in no time, I recieved another text message from Nyaba (coffee shop). He also sent a script but I also told him that this is old so he should forget about it because it could be a mischief. But late in the night, I scanned through Facebook and I saw a video. Then I told myself I made a mistake by telling these two ladies that NAPO’s comment was an old one. As we speak, I have sent an apology to my wife but he said he will not accept the apology. I have also sent Nyaba a message for misrepresenting the situation,” Mr Kweku Baako explained.
