Two arrested for alleged involvement in murder of woman at Kokoase

Police in the Central North Region have apprehended two individuals suspected of playing a role in the killing of a woman identified as Tahiru Zenabu at Kokoase, a community near Twifo Praso.

The lifeless body of the victim was discovered in her room on April 3. She was reportedly found with a cloth tied around her neck and visible blood stains on her hands, pointing to a suspected case of foul play.

The suspects, Isaac Arhin and Richard Armah, were picked up by authorities on May 5, at Twifo Aboabo during a targeted police operation.

Investigations indicate that Richard Armah, a mobile phone technician and spinner residing in Twifo Aboabo, was tracked down after he used the deceased’s phone to contact one of her friends.

The friend, upon receiving the call, alerted the police, leading to his arrest. Following his interrogation, Armah named Isaac Arhin as an accomplice, resulting in Arhin’s subsequent arrest.

The deceased’s phone was retrieved and is currently in police custody as part of the ongoing probe.

Both suspects were arraigned before the court on May 7, and have been remanded into police custody.

They are expected to make their next court appearance on May 21, as investigations continue.

  • Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s murder, Daniel Koranteng, to appear in court today

Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s murder, Daniel Koranteng, to appear in court today

The main suspect in the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, is scheduled to appear in court today, Wednesday, April 2, after his recent arrest.

Koranteng faces charges related to the killing of Suale, who was known for his investigative work exposing corruption within Ghanaian politics.

Suale, a prominent member of the Tiger Eye PI team, was shot dead in January 2019 in Madina, Accra. His murder caused shockwaves both nationally and internationally, as he had been pivotal in revealing major corruption cases.

According to law enforcement sources, Daniel Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, was allegedly in the vicinity of the crime scene when the shooting took place. Suale was ambushed and shot at close range while driving, with the identity of the assailants remaining unknown.

In addition to the murder charges, Koranteng is accused of betrayal, with reports suggesting that he may have shared Suale’s photos with a politician involved in the crime prior to the killing.

This case has sparked renewed calls for justice and the defense of press freedom in Ghana, as authorities move ahead with legal action against the suspect.

Suspect in Ahmed Suale murder cases remanded in custody

A key suspect in the murder of undercover journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale has been remanded by the Madina Magistrates’ Court as investigations into the high-profile case intensify.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, Managing Director of ISPY Company and known by the alias Akwase Amakye, is facing a provisional charge of murder. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has long raised concerns over journalist safety in Ghana.

Hussein-Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI investigative team, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near his residence in Madina on January 16, 2019. His work, particularly a joint exposé with the BBC on corruption in African football, is believed to have made him a target.

Koranteng’s arrest follows an extensive investigation involving the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. Police prosecutors disclosed in court that phone records indicated communication between Koranteng and Hussein-Suale shortly before the killing. Additionally, evidence suggests Koranteng was in the vicinity of the crime scene on the night of the incident.

Further complicating the case, prosecutors revealed that Koranteng had admitted to taking photographs of the journalist but denied selling them to politician Kennedy Agyapong. Agyapong had previously displayed Hussein-Suale’s images on national television, calling on the public to attack him if spotted. According to the prosecution, Hussein-Suale’s lawyer identified Koranteng as the individual responsible for providing those photographs to Agyapong.

Koranteng’s lawyer, Kofi Essel, dismissed the accusations, describing the murder charge as “shambolic” and insisting that the allegations lacked solid evidence. He argued for his client’s release on bail, questioning whether the sale of photographs alone could serve as sufficient grounds for a murder charge.

Magistrate Suzzy Nyakotey adjourned the case to April 1 to allow further investigations. Authorities remain hopeful that Koranteng’s detention will lead to further revelations and bring justice to the slain journalist.

Suspect arrested in Ahmed Suale murder case – Report

A major breakthrough has reportedly been made in the long-running investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

It is reported that the Ghana Police Service has arrested a key suspect linked to the case.

The suspect, identified as a former close associate of the late journalist, according to JoyNews, is believed to have played a role in exposing his identity before his assassination. Reports suggest that he allegedly shared Suale’s photographs with a prominent Ghanaian politician prior to the killing.

Ahmed Suale was shot dead near his residence in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unidentified gunmen. His murder came shortly after he collaborated with the BBC on an investigative piece. Before his death, he worked with Tiger Eye Private Investigations, where he had a professional relationship with the suspect until the latter’s dismissal from the organization.

Authorities have revealed that the suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, fled the country after the police gathered intelligence on his possible involvement. His movements were tracked following an investigation by the FBI in the United States, which uncovered crucial phone records showing communication between him and the deceased just days before the murder.

As part of the probe, Suale’s mobile devices were sent to the U.S. for forensic analysis, leading to the discovery of vital information that strengthened the case against the suspect.

A source within the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) disclosed that Amakye, who was a frequent visitor to Suale’s Madina residence, left Ghana hurriedly when law enforcement officials began closing in on him.

“He used to visit the deceased regularly. But when the police picked up leads on his role in the case, he relocated to the U.S.,” the source revealed.

The suspect was apprehended last week upon his return to Ghana. He was arrested at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease, where he had been hiding.

However, concerns have emerged within the police service regarding potential interference in the case. A senior police officer is reportedly pushing for the suspect to be released on police enquiry bail rather than being put before the court, a development that has stirred unease at the police headquarters.

Ahmed Suale’s murder sent shockwaves through Ghana’s media and investigative journalism community. His work, particularly with Tiger Eye PI, was instrumental in exposing corruption in African football, including in Ghana, making his assassination a case of both national and international interest.

  • Court orders fresh hearing in JB Danquah murder proceedings

Court orders fresh hearing in JB Danquah murder proceedings

The trial of Daniel Asiedu, charged with the murder of former Abuakwa North MP JB Danquah, is headed for a retrial after a hung jury delivered an inconclusive verdict.

The seven-member jury was split 4:3 in favor of a not-guilty verdict, leading Justice Lydia Osei Marfo to discharge the jury under Section 285(4) of the Criminal and Other Offenses (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30). The court deemed the decision insufficient to conclude the case.

Despite the split verdict, Asiedu remains in custody as ordered by the judge.

The case, which dates back to 2016, involves allegations that Asiedu robbed and fatally stabbed the late MP at his residence. Following a psychiatric evaluation in 2021 that deemed him fit for trial, Asiedu’s plea was taken, and the trial commenced.

The retrial aims to provide clarity and resolution to this high-profile murder case, which has captivated national attention.

The prosecution alleged that Daniel Asiedu accessed the late MP JB Danquah’s home by climbing a ladder to enter his room.

At the time of the attack, the night security guard was reportedly asleep. According to the prosecution, Asiedu struggled with the MP, overpowered him, and fatally stabbed him in the chest and neck before fleeing with three phones.

Police investigations revealed that Asiedu had sustained a knife wound on his palm during the attack and later washed off the blood at a neighboring house.

Following the incident, Asiedu handed over the stolen phones to a family friend of his girlfriend, asking him to charge and unlock them.

The prosecution’s third witness testified that one phone, unknowingly unlocked, contained pictures of the deceased MP.

Alarmed by this discovery, the witness contacted Ursula Owusu, whose number was found on the device. This led to a report being filed with the police and Asiedu’s subsequent arrest.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence from eight witnesses to establish their case of robbery and murder.

The late MP’s driver recounted his activities with the MP on the day of the murder, while the night security guard admitted to dozing off during his shift but raised an alarm after noticing a ladder repositioned under the MP’s window.

A neighbor testified that Asiedu washed blood off his hands at her house shortly after the attack. Additionally, forensic experts linked Asiedu to the crime scene through DNA evidence, and the investigator stated that Asiedu confessed to the crime.

The defense, however, argued that the prosecution’s narrative was fabricated and lacked credible evidence.

They questioned the reliability of the pathologist’s report, which was completed two years after the autopsy due to the theft of the pathologist’s laptop.

The defense also raised concerns about the competence of the DNA analyst, asserting that the analysis was conducted by a third-party company and not directly by the expert who testified.

Furthermore, they criticized the lack of forensic testing on the alleged murder weapon and challenged the jury’s inability to verify whether the phones belonged to the deceased.

Despite the prosecution’s evidence, the jury returned a split decision of 4:3 in favor of not guilty on both charges of robbery and murder. The presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, declared the verdict inconclusive and discharged the jury, citing the need for a retrial to resolve the case definitively.

  • Verdict on J.B. Danquah Adu’s murder case to be delivered on Dec 4

Verdict on J.B. Danquah Adu’s murder case to be delivered on Dec 4

An Accra High Court is expected to announce its verdict on December 4 in the case of Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Don Don, who is accused of murdering J.B. Danquah Adu.

The court has set this date to hear the final statements from both the prosecution and the defence. Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, a Court of Appeal judge with additional High Court duties, will provide a summary of the case before delivering the ruling.

On Thursday, Principal State Attorney Sefakor Batsa concluded the cross-examination of Asiedu, also known as Gucci Young Star.

During the session, Asiedu denied the allegations that his DNA was found at the home of the late MP, as well as on the property of a key witness,

Abigail Marfo, where he is said to have washed himself after the crime. He also rejected the claim that the red hat found on Marfo’s property contained 100% of his DNA.

“The Police never collected any mobile phone from me. They rather took the phone from another guy who I do not know.

“I later heard the guy they took the phone from, went to the house of Madam Ursula Ekuful and Kennedy Agyapong, and a meeting was held for about 30 minutes.

“The police refused to call all these people to come and testify in court,” Asiedu said.

Asiedu argued that he had only given one statement to the police and that all other statements attributed to him were coerced.

He insisted that the police had fabricated the additional statements, forcing him to thumbprint them.

The accused also denied the prosecution’s allegations that he not only stabbed the deceased but also stole his mobile phones. He claimed that the police had never recovered any mobile phone from him.

According to Asiedu, the police had taken a phone from another individual, whom he did not know. He further alleged that this individual had attended meetings at the homes of Ursula Ekuful and Kennedy Agyapong but was never called to testify in court.

Asiedu acknowledged that his name and alias were tattooed on his body and offered to show them to the jury if allowed.

However, he continued to maintain his innocence, denying any involvement in the death of J.B. Danquah Adu, who was fatally stabbed on February 8, 2016.

In response to questions from the jury, Asiedu explained that he had visited the Regional Police Command to report an incident involving a prostitute.

Regarding a bloodstained cup, which was allegedly given to him during the scene reconstruction, he confirmed having blood on his hands due to a head injury but could not confirm whether the cup contained his blood.

He also mentioned that due to the stress of the situation, he was unsure if the deceased’s house had security cameras.

Asiedu, who faces murder charges, has pleaded not guilty to the allegations. His alleged accomplice, Vincent Bossu, also known as Junior Agogo, was acquitted of conspiracy charges after the court ruled there was no case against him.

Kokrobitey: Man who killed daughter, German wife in sentenced to life

A High Court in Accra has sentenced 47-year-old Burkinabe, Boigouna Aloys, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his German wife, Claudia Weizmann, and their teenage daughter at their residence in Kokrobitey, Accra.

The conviction followed a unanimous guilty verdict from a seven-member jury on two counts of murder. Prosecutors revealed that Aloys struck his 53-year-old wife with a hammer during an argument, and then, fearing their 14-year-old daughter would report him, he strangled her as well.

Assistant State Attorney Yvonne Yaachie-Adomako led the prosecution, calling five witnesses to support their case. When presiding judge Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh gave Aloys an opportunity to speak before sentencing, he declined.

Details presented in court showed that Aloys buried both bodies at the edge of their 10-plot property in an attempt to cover up the crime. However, neighbors became suspicious due to the family’s sudden disappearance and a foul odor emanating from the compound.

They notified the police, leading to an investigation that eventually implicated Aloys. He later confessed to both murders, explaining that he had killed his wife in a violent altercation and then killed his daughter to prevent her from reporting him.

The family, who had relocated from Germany to Ghana in January 2020, was living on the expansive Kokrobitey property when the tragic incident occurred.

The Ghana Police Service has submitted a duplicate docket on the O’Reilly student murder case to the Attorney General’s office for legal advice.

This update was revealed by Chief Inspector Paul Osei during a recent court session, as reported by myjoyonline.com.

Chief Inspector Osei mentioned that he had instructed the case investigator to follow up on the progress of the matter.

The fatal incident occurred following a heated argument between the two students over whose father was wealthier.

Despite the frantic efforts of fellow students to secure medical help, Edward was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Investigations have since been launched by the Ghana Education Service, amidst allegations of negligence on the part of the school.

A student of O’Reilly SHS who witnessed the murder of 18-year-old General Arts student, Edward Sackey, and its aftermath has narrated to the media the alleged negligence on the part of the school authorities.

Edward was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a classmate from the Visual Arts Department on Monday, September 2.

According to reports, the altercation that led to Edward’s death was reportedly sparked by a dispute over personal wealth. Edward was stabbed three times in the chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect, Godwin, has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service.

Engaging the media on how Edward lost his life, a sister of the victim noted that she, together with the help of some students, had to transport Edward to a health facility as they were ignored by the teachers in the school.

She further noted that upon arrival at the school, none of the teachers inquired about the health of her brother.

Also, in an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, Enoch Sackey expressed profound frustration and demanded accountability from the school for the circumstances leading to his son’s death.

“We have to sue the school, we have to hold the school responsible,” Sackey asserted. “We want the school authority to come out and explain why such a thing would happen on school premises, where the teachers, nobody tried to interfere… they were all unconcerned until my son passed away.”

Sackey further criticized the school’s teachers for negligence, noting that his niece had called him to the school due to the fight but he did not understand why the teachers did not handle the situation. “I went to the school in Accra to understand the happenings, but sadly, I found my son covered in blood,” he said.

On Tuesday, Sackey and other family members, dressed in red and black, picketed the school to voice their dissatisfaction. They have expressed disappointment that neither the school administration, the attacker’s family, nor the police have contacted them regarding the incident.

A final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his classmate during a violent altercation on the school campus.

The tragic incident has left the school community in shock and mourning.

The altercation, which took place on Monday, September 2, began as a heated argument between the two students and escalated into a physical confrontation. Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly used a sharp object to stab his colleague three times.

The victim was immediately rushed to the LEKMA hospital by fellow students but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Enoch Sackey, the father of the deceased, recounted the tragic events leading to his son’s death. “What happened was yesterday [Monday, September 2] I saw my boy off to come to school and I also went to work. So I was at work and my niece called me that Edward was having a misunderstanding, one of the students was having a misunderstanding with Edward so I should come,” Sackey said.

Despite his niece’s urgent plea, Sackey was dismayed to learn that the teachers were not intervening in the situation. As he rushed to the school, he received another call informing him that Edward had been stabbed and was lying on the school premises. By the time Sackey arrived at the hospital, his son had already succumbed to his injuries.

“The doctor said Edward has passed away. So when they showed me the body, he had been stabbed three times on his chest,” he recounted.

Sackey expressed frustration over the lack of response from both the school authorities and the police. He criticized the school for its failure to provide immediate information and support.

“The school authority has not said anything from yesterday up till now. The police have not called, the school authority has not called, even the boy who killed my son, neither the family have even reached me. That is why we are here to seek justice for my son,” Sackey lamented.

His call for justice was further fueled by the presence of police officers blocking the school gates, preventing him from entering the premises.

“They have brought policemen to block every gate stopping us from going in…So that is why we are here,” he added.

Following his confession, police investigators, led by Detective Corporal Nii Armah Ashitey, located where Donkoh had buried Aboagye’s remains.

According to Agyadu Barima on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Donkoh and Aboagye were close friends who did everything together.

However, the deceased pulled a knife on him, and because he did not have a knife, he pulled his gun and allegedly shot him. That was what he told the police.”

The reporter added that the police used a shovel to retrieve the remains of the deceased.

Lois was reportedly found unconscious in a hotel swimming pool during a business trip with her supervisor and a company driver in Takoradi on June 8, 2024.

Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The exact circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation by the Ghana Police Service, who conducted an autopsy revealing the causes as asphyxia, severe pulmonary edema, and drowning.

In a heartbreaking revelation, Lois’s family shared the immense grief they have endured this year, having already lost her mother and grandmother prior to Lois’s tragic passing. According to her uncle, Kwesi Kidman, the family was in the midst of arranging funeral proceedings for Lois’s mother and grandmother when they received the devastating news of Lois’s death.

“This year has been incredibly difficult for our family,” Kwesi Kidman lamented in a viral Facebook post. “We lost my sister, then my mother passed away due to shock shortly after. As we were preparing to lay them to rest, we received the tragic news of Lois’s death in Takoradi. It’s been a year of unbearable loss.”

George Agyenim Boateng, Lois’s brother, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the police investigation and the lack of communication from authorities regarding the progress made in Lois’s case. He emphasized the family’s plea for justice and transparency in uncovering the circumstances leading to her death.

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, recently reached out to the family, acknowledging their concerns and apologizing for the inadequate engagement initially experienced by the family. He assured them of ongoing efforts to thoroughly investigate the incident and pledged to keep the family updated on any developments.

As the investigation continues, the family remains determined to seek justice for Lois and to honor the memories of their loved ones who have tragically departed this year.

A/R: Man allegedly stabbed by assemblyman at Odumai Apeboso

The Assemblyman representing Abeposo electoral area in the Asante Akyem Municipality, Emmanuel Opoku, has been accused of stabbing a young man.

According to a report by Adom News, the incident unfolded after the young man’s brother was allegedly assaulted.

Idrisu Ibrahim, the victim, claimed that among those involved was Niri, a friend of his and the Assemblyman’s brother.

Ibrahim approached to investigate the situation, during which another individual named Kwesi Mintah reportedly slashed his back with a cutlass.

This led to a confrontation, with Ibrahim retaliating using the same cutlass after it fell from Mintah’s hands.

The situation escalated further, resulting in Ibrahim allegedly being attacked by multiple residents before the Assemblyman purportedly stabbed him in the rib with a cutlass.

Injured, Ibrahim sought refuge in a nearby store and was later taken to a health center for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Konongo Divisional Police have reportedly taken the Assemblyman into custody.

Tensions have escalted in Banvim, a community within the Kakpagyili electoral area of the Northern Region, following the suspected murder of two children.

The children, Arafat and Ayaa, went missing on Saturday, June 22, 2024, after telling their parents they were visiting a neighbor but never returned.

Community members searched the neighbor’s house but found no trace of the children, leading to increased agitation among the residents.

The assembly member for the Kakpagyili electoral area, Alhaji Hafiz Andani, stated that police investigations on Sunday revealed the bodies in an abandoned car behind the suspect’s house.

The bodies have been moved to the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue.

  • A/R: Jurors’ strike delays proceedings for Otumfuo’s Akyempimhene murder case, 8 others

A/R: Jurors’ strike delays proceedings for Otumfuo’s Akyempimhene murder case, 8 others

The murder case involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Akyempimhene and eight other murder and rape cases being heard at the High Court in Kumasi have been halted due to a strike by jurors in the Ashanti region.

The jurors have stopped court proceedings once again due to unpaid allowances.

They previously went on strike in November 2023 for several weeks but returned to work after Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo promised to resolve their arrears following a meeting in Kumasi.

Despite assurances of timely payments, the issue remains unresolved months later. Jurors are now on strike over outstanding allowances dating from August 2023 to May 2024, citing financial difficulties caused by the delay.

Albert Ackah, the jurors’ spokesperson in the Ashanti region, reiterated their plea for prompt payment “Yes, it is true that we are unable to come to court because of our allowance. Our allowances always delay until we take action before we receive our allowance. This is not good; it is not proper for us to always chase our allowance before we get it.

“Today, we have nine cases and because we couldn’t come due to non-payment of our allowance, the cases couldn’t come on. So please, I am appealing to the government to release money to the judicial service, so that they can pay their jurors so that they can return to court. Nobody ever should say that it is the jurors who delay the cases.

“So, this small, tiny allowance that we receive here, why always we need to follow, talk until these allowances are received?

During her previous meeting with jurors, Chief Justice Torkornoo suggested they use their salaries from other jobs to cover transportation costs, as many are public sector retirees. However, jurors argue their roles as jurors and their personal finances should be distinct, emphasizing the need for prompt allowance payments.

“Most of them were in the jury system before they retired. They are receiving only a retirement package, or better still, their pension salary. They are using this money to upkeep their houses and their homes.”

Kasoa ritual killing and other trials in limbo due to jury strike

The ongoing strike by jurors since May 16 has severely disrupted several important trials, including the highly publicized Ritual killing case involving two boys who have been accused of murdering a ten-year-old boy.

Trials like those of Gregory Afoko, JB Danquah, and the Abessim murder have also been significantly impacted due to jurors’ protests over unpaid allowances.

In the Kasoa case, Nicholas Kini, the second accused, concluded his defense on February 14, 2024. The court awaited closing arguments from the prosecution and defense, as well as final instructions from the judge to the jury for their deliberations and verdict.

Originally set for May 7, the proceedings were postponed to June 24 as the judge had not finished summing up. However, on June 24, court proceedings could not proceed due to the jury strike.

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, presiding over the case on Monday, lamented the strike, calling it regrettable for the judicial process.

  • Most wanted UK fugitive Nana Oppong arrested on murder charge

Most wanted UK fugitive Nana Oppong arrested on murder charge

A high-level drug dealer and one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives, Nana Oppong, was captured while trying to enter Morocco hidden in the back of a lorry.

Sky News reports that the 43-year-old, also known as “Enz,” has been extradited back to the UK and now faces a life sentence for orchestrating the execution of Robert Powell outside a party in Essex.

Robert Powell, 50, who managed rapper Dutchavelli, was shot eight times outside Hills House in Roydon in the early hours of April 13, 2020.

The attack, executed with a 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol, left Powell with 15 bullet wounds, some caused by the same bullet re-entering his body, including one that dislodged a gold grill from his mouth.

Despite bystanders’ efforts to save him, Powell succumbed to his injuries the following day in the hospital.

Prosecutors revealed that Mr Oppong orchestrated the execution due to a personal grievance with Powell.

The prosecution detailed how Mr Oppong led a team of accomplices, including drivers and spotters, to carry out the murder.

Following the shooting, Mr Oppong fled the country, declaring in messages from abroad, “Bro, don’t think I’m coming back” and “I ain’t doing no time, bro.”

The National Crime Agency named Mr Oppong one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives. He was eventually caught using a Maltese passport in Morocco.

Prosecutor Justin Rouse KC described Oppong as the “instigator, protagonist, and principal organizer” of the killing.

Oppong reportedly arrived at the scene in a Ford Kuga with cloned plates, where a gunman, possibly Oppong or another individual from the vehicle, executed Powell.

Oppong was tried at London’s Woolwich Crown Court and found guilty of murder, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, causing grievous bodily harm, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

His co-defendant, Israar Shah, 39, from Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, was also convicted of murder and firearm possession.

Shah fled to Spain post-murder but was extradited to face trial alongside Oppong.

The court learned that other participants in the murder, including Temitope Adeyinka, known as ‘Limo,’ remain at large.

Despite denying involvement, Shah admitted to being at the scene in his Toyota Prius with Adeyinka but claimed no active role in the murder.

Oppong, however, denied being present at the scene altogether.

Oppong’s criminal history includes previous charges and acquittals for multiple murders.

He was cleared of murdering Eugene Brown and Patrick Ford outside a birthday party in Forest Gate, London, in 2010 after juries failed to reach verdicts.

He did, however, receive a two-year sentence for perverting the course of justice after CCTV footage implicated him.

In 2015, he was acquitted of stabbing Ashley Latty to death but was sentenced to four years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

  • Residents of Jirapa express displeasure as Wa High Court transfers murder case to Kumasi

Residents of Jirapa express displeasure as Wa High Court transfers murder case to Kumasi

Residents of Jirapa in the Upper West Region have expressed dissatisfaction with the recent decision of the Wa High Court to suspend the murder trial proceedings of Eric Johnson, the CEO of the Royal Cosy Hills Hotel.

The court announced the suspension of the trial following claims made by the lawyers representing the accused that the Chief Justice had ordered the case to be transferred to Kumasi.

This decision has been met with disapproval from members of the Jirapa community, many of whom were present in court to observe the proceedings.

Mr. Johnson, the former CEO of the Royal Cosy Hills Hotel, was brutally murdered, and three individuals are currently on trial for his killing.

State prosecutors, led by Saed Abdul Shakuur, along with the defence team, were prepared to commence the hearing when the lead counsel for the accused, Clement Eledi, presented a letter claiming that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo had directed the case to be relocated to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Consequently, the court decided to pause the proceedings to authenticate the letter from the Chief Justice’s office.

Principal State Attorney Saed Abdul Shakuur expressed astonishment at this turn of events, highlighting that the prosecution was ready to proceed with 11 witnesses, seven of whom are located in Wa, and three are officers at the regional police headquarters.

“When we entered the court, the lawyer for the accused gave us a letter, purporting to be a letter from the CJ…instructing the district court to immediately transfer the matter to the high court in Kumasi. But I think that there’s more. We have 11 witnesses. Seven of them are in Wa.”

“Three are officers at the police regional headquarters. So, we intended to start the trial next week with the lawyers and we have since had conferences with everybody, we have filed witness cases and everything and so the case was about to start until this happened.”

Several residents from Jirapa, present at the court, voiced their opposition to the decision to relocate the case to Kumasi.

One resident questioned the authenticity of the petition that led to the Chief Justice’s directive. They suggested that if the petition originated from the accused’s mother, it might indicate a biased interest, making it equally pertinent for the local community of Jirapa.

The residents are worried that transferring the case to Kumasi would be unfair, considering that the murder occurred in Jirapa. They argued that traveling to Kumasi for every hearing would be inconvenient and costly. Consequently, they are urging that the trial be conducted in Wa, where the crime was committed.

  • Kabale district police arrest 2 officers for alleged murder of local resident

Kabale district police arrest 2 officers for alleged murder of local resident

The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Mr. Elly Maate, has confirmed the arrests of Sgt. John Tumwesigye, in charge of Nyanja police post, and his subordinate, PC James Owomuhangi.

Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the two officers, during an early morning patrol on Tuesday, shot and killed Chris Twinomujuni, a resident of Rujongoma village in Kaharo sub-county, Kabale District.

“While on an early morning patrol on Tuesday at Nyanja trading centre at around 3AM, the accused police officers encountered a group of individuals drinking alcohol and smoking bangi. A scuffle broke out, and Sgt Tumwesigye fired shots to disperse the crowd. A stray bullet hit Twinomujuni in the leg, causing him to bleed to death. The police apprehended three suspects, while others escaped,” Mr Maate said.

He clarified that the police officers and the suspected criminals were arrested to assist in investigating the case.

Ms Anah Twebaze and Jonan Kamuntu, both relatives to the deceased, asked the government to incur all burial expenses and later take care of the financial needs of the deceased’s family members.

“The deceased has been the sole breadwinner for his family and now that his life has been terminated by a government worker, the government should take care of all the financial needs of his wife and his two children,” they said.

The former LCIII chairman for Kaharo Sub County in Kabale District, Mr. Dustan Muhereza, described the deceased as a humble and hardworking resident who earned a respectable income from farming.

“I was surprised to learn that a police officer shot and killed the suspect yet he had other alternative means of handling the matter other than taking the law in his hands. It is my prayer that the accused police officer gets the punishment he deserves for the offence he committed,” he said.

JB Danquah murder trial: I admitted to guilt because of DSP Kofi Sarpong’s ‘brutal tactics’ – Sexy don don

Daniel Asiedu, also known as “sexy don don,” the prime suspect in the 2016 murder of a sitting Member of Parliament (MP), has implicated three prominent police officers in his defense during an open court session.

The officers mentioned include the current Inspector-General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, Superintendent of Police Kofi Sarpong, and retired SP Afia Tenge. Asiedu claimed that these officers were present immediately after his arrest on suspicion of murdering the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah, on February 8, 2016.

During cross-examination, Asiedu maintained his innocence, alleging that he was not at the murder scene.

Instead, he claimed to have spent the evening at Agbogboloshie, where he engaged in sexual activity with a call girl. He further alleged that a pimp associated with the call girl threatened him in his absence.

Asiedu stated that he attempted to report the threat at the Accra Central police station but was advised by a motorcycle rider to seek the assistance of a police informant named Adotey.

According to Asiedu, Adotey then accompanied him to the police station, where he was subsequently arrested as a murder suspect.

Asiedu claimed that he confessed to the murder under duress, alleging that Superintendent Sarpong violently attacked him in an engine room.

He stated that Sarpong threatened him with a machete, causing him to feel disoriented and fearful for his life. Asiedu asserted that he eventually capitulated to Sarpong’s demands out of concern for his safety.

The court adjourned the case until May 29 to allow for the continuation of Daniel Asiedu’s testimony.

Below are excerpts of his cross-examination:

    A. I made up my mind to report the matter at the regional police station but on my way to pick an okada the rider told me not to because he knows Mawuko‘s superior who goes by the name Adotey and that he would lead me to Adotey to report the matter to him so that he would warm Mawuko.

When the okada took me to Adotey, he gave me a seat and I explained to him what happened and that was the first time I met Adotey who is an informant.

Adotey told me to exercise patience and that he would lead me to the regional police station to report the issue and that was the first time I went to the regional police station.

When we got to the police station Adotey asked me to wait by a police officer while he went to see the police commander. When he returned from seeing the police commander, he asked me to come with him to see the police commander so the two of us went to the police commander’s office.

    Q. Tell this court what time was this?

    A. We got to the police at about 5:25 am

    Q. In your statement yesterday you mentioned Allotey and today you mentioned Adotey. Who are they?

    A. The name I mentioned yesterday is not Allotey. His name is Adotey and he is an informant. They (officers) mentioned their name to me as Dampare, ASP Kofi Sarpong and the female was Afia Tenge.

I turned around and saw that Adotey had left the office and was standing outside. Officer Dampare gave me a seat in front of him and two other officers sat by each side of me.

Dampare took his phone out and decided to record me and he asked me ‘who sent you?’ and I asked what was going on. He continued to ask me if one NDC man called Sorogho and one short NDC man with an Ewe name.

When I was at the police station I saw on the TV that he had been arrested at his office and sent to the CID HQ. He has an Ewe name that I cannot pronounce.

ASP Sarpong took me to the engine room and took a machete out of a fridge and hit my head with it. I was bleeding and dazed. He told me to accept whatever Dampare was telling me or else I would be killed. I stood there for a while because at that moment I couldn’t think straight. I did not answer the questions he was asking me.

    Q. When you were attacked with a machete by this gospel singer police officer and you felt dizzy and did not answer his questions, what happened after that?

    A. He stood behind me and slapped me from both sides. At that moment I knelt down and begged him that whatever he said I have said and I shall do as he had asked me.

    Q. Why did you kneel down to beg?

    A. I have not died and resurrected before so I did not want to take any decision that he would regret. So, I agreed to do whatever he asked me hoping that I could explain and understand what they were asking from me.

He understood me and took me back to the office and sat me down. Dampare once again took out his phones and started filming me. He mentioned those two names and asked if they were the persons who sent me? and I said yes. I was kept there from morning till about 6 pm and I was moved to the BNI office at Kawukudi.

Presiding judge Lydia Osei Marfo adjourned the case to May 29 for the continuation of the witness testimony of Daniel Asiedu.

  • Verdict for 2 teens in Kasoa ritual murder trial postponed until June 24

Verdict for 2 teens in Kasoa ritual murder trial postponed until June 24

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, the trial judge overseeing the case involving a 15-year-old juvenile and an 18-year-old young offender accused of murdering 10-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdellah for an alleged money ritual, began with the statement, “The summing up is not ready.”

Their fate, anticipated to be determined on May 7, 2024, was postponed when the court declared that the summing up wasn’t prepared during the scheduled closing addresses and subsequent summing up for the jury.

Both individuals face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of the 10-year-old.

Upon calling the case, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo announced, “Our summing up is not ready,” setting June 24 as the new date for closing addresses and summing up, citing “circumstances beyond” its control.

The trial concluded on February 14, with the defense lawyers granted permission to submit their written submissions post-March 14, as per the court’s orders. Senior State Attorney Dorcas Fellie confirmed the prosecution’s compliance with the court’s directives regarding written submissions.

Disappointment rippled through the late Ishmael Mensah Abdellah’s family members present in court at the adjournment.

    Background:

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, the second accused (18-year-old) concluded his case without calling witnesses, following the State Prosecutors’ indication of the end of cross-examination led by Senior State Attorney Nana Adoma Osei.

After evidence closure, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo instructed both parties to file final closing addresses by March 14, with further directives promised post-compliance.

The prosecution called seven witnesses, including the 15-year-old juvenile’s father, mother, and sister. While the juvenile confessed to the offense, stating they “committed the crime together,” the young offender denied the charges.

  • You lied! Man who killed soldier at Kasoa is an operative – Adib to National Security Ministry

You lied! Man who killed soldier at Kasoa is an operative – Adib to National Security Ministry

A security and foreign policy analyst, Adib Saani, has expressed disappointment over the National Security’s swift denial of Benlord Ababio’s affiliation as a staff member, a suspect implicated in the killing of a military officer in Millennium City, a suburb of Kasoa in the Central Region.

Mr Saani finds the Ministry of National Security’s rapid denial of Ababio’s association peculiar and suggestive of potential concealment of information.

Last week, the Ministry refuted any connection between Benlord Ababio and their staff, despite allegations linking him to the fatal shooting of LCpl Michael Danso.

According to portions of the Ministry’s statement, “The Ministry of National Security has taken note of a news item in circulation on social media that alleges that a supposed staff member of the Ministry of National Security, by name Benlord Ababio, in an incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Millennium City, Kasoa, shot and killed a soldier.

“The Ministry wishes to put on record that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, who is currently in police custody, is not a staff member of the Ministry of National Security”.

However, Mr Saani contended that there exists evidence, including videos and photos of Ababio undergoing training, which substantiates his status as a national security operative.

During an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Saani disclosed discussions with another security analyst who possesses corroborating evidence of Ababio’s training.

The circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death prompt Saani to assert Ababio’s deliberate and calculated actions, indicating premeditation.

Mr Saani urged a thorough investigation into Ababio’s purported affiliation with national security, emphasizing the potential infiltration of vigilantes into security agencies, a concern he had previously raised.

“In fact, I discussed this with another friend of mine who is also a security analyst, and he disclosed to me that he had in his possession videos and photos of the training of the suspect, which proves that he is a national security official.

“The way the National Security released a statement denying that the suspect was a staff member is strange and shows that there is something they’re trying to hide.”

“The fact that he had the audacity to fire the shots — not a single shot for us to say maybe it was fired in error — but he fired multiple shots at his victims, killing one in the process, shows that he had planned to kill someone.

“He is such a powerful person. We need to therefore investigate this matter to determine if indeed he is a national security staffer.”

He warned that overlooking security lapses in Ghana poses a significant threat to democracy, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to safeguard national security.

In a shocking incident that unfolded in Abeka, within the Greater Accra Region, a man reportedly resorted to setting himself ablaze following a failed attempt to harm his wife.

The distressing event transpired during the early hours of Monday, May 6, 2024, after the husband had repeatedly threatened to end both his own life and that of his wife.

Martina Jones, a 38-year-old mother of three, recounted the terrifying ordeal to Adom News.

According to Martina, her estranged husband, Collins Jones, launched a brutal assault on her while she was asleep around 3 a.m. He struck her head with a sizable stick, inflicting severe injury and causing profuse bleeding.

The situation escalated as Collins attempted to strangle her.

However, Martina’s quick reflexes enabled her to escape his grip and flee the room. Prompt intervention from neighbors ensured she received immediate assistance and was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

In a desperate bid to evade accountability or driven by despair, Collins resorted to setting their residence on fire.

“To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity” – GJA on Kasoa murder

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a soldier during a land dispute in Millennium City, Kasoa, Central Region.

The soldier, believed to be in his late 30s, was shot dead on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, around 4:20 pm, while two other officers with him managed to escape unharmed.

Police have arrested a suspect, Benlord Ababio, in connection with the shooting.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day 2024 commemoration at the Koforidua Technical University on Friday, May 3, Dwumfour described the soldier’s murder as “the depth of insanity”.

“The media have the mandate to uphold the 1992 Constitution and that includes the human rights provisions under Chapter 5 of the Constitution. It is on the basis of such mandate that we totally condemn the recent killing of a soldier at Millennium City near Kasoa over a land dispute.

“To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity any human being can sink to. Under normal circumstances, the military would have launched a reprisal attack on Millennium City by now, and whenever they did so, they were condemned for violating the rights of innocent people.”

He commended the military for their restraint in response to the murder of their colleague and urged the public to respect security officers and refrain from attacking them.

“While commending the military for exercising restraint in the face of extreme provocation, we call on the Police to investigate the matter as quickly as possible and prosecute the killer. We also appeal to the general public to respect security officers and refrain from attacking them,” he urged.

Mr. Dwumfour also called on Ghanaians to acknowledge and value the efforts of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

“Let me take this occasion to urge all Ghanaians to appreciate officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, who have played an important part in our country’s stability. They also safeguard our country’s territorial integrity, and we must always support them.”

Suspect in London sword assault charged with murder

A man dragged to court after he was accused of swinging a sword in a rampage in London. This incident killed a teenage boy and injured two police officers and two other men. He is facing charges of murder and attempted murder.

Marcus Arduini Monzo, who is 36 years old and has citizenship in both Spain and Brazil, has been accused of killing 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin. Daniel was killed while he was walking to school on Tuesday morning in a suburb in northeast London.

Lawyer David Burns said Monzo had an accident with his van in Hainault before 7 am on Tuesday and hit a man. Then he got out of the van and told the man he would kill him and then cut his neck.

Then he entered a house next door where a couple and their four-year-old daughter were sleeping. He yelled that he believed in God and then he hurt the girl’s dad by cutting his neck and arm.

Monzo surprised Anjorin and cut his neck and stabbed him in the chest while he was on the ground.

When the police came to help the boy, Monzo suddenly appeared from the bushes and ran away, according to Burns. The police chased after Monzo and he attacked a female officer, causing very serious injuries. Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said this on LBC Radio.

Rowley said the officer almost lost her hand and the doctors spent a long time fixing her arm.

The officer’s colleague also got hurt badly in the fight, with injuries to his arm and hand.

More police officers came and caught Monzo. They used a stun gun to make him stop and then took him away.

The police said the incident was not related to terrorism and did not seem to be deliberate.

Monzo was wearing a gray sweatsuit and holding his injured left arm. He did not say if he was guilty or not in court and was kept in jail. Another meeting was planned for Tuesday in the Old Bailey, which is a famous court.

He is accused of trying to kill two people and causing serious injury to them, as well as breaking into a home and having a weapon.

People in London are voting for their mayor and local council members. The court appearance happened at the same time. Crime and trust in the police were big issues during the election campaign.

Rowley, the boss of the Metropolitan Police, praised his officers for being brave and going towards danger. He said that they got there 12 minutes after getting the first call and caught the suspect 10 minutes after that.

The Chop bar vendor who is allegedly involved with the murder of three women in the Krobo area has been reportedly been arrested by Ghana police.

However she has denied her involvement in the allegations levelled against her by Richard Tetteh.

A self-confessed killer has revealed how he carried out the murder of three individuals at the behest of a chop bar operator.

A video circulating on social media, purportedly showing Richard Tetteh, being interrogated, depicts him seated in an office, handcuffed, clad in worn-out shorts and a T-shirt, fielding questions.

He admits, “Someone said she wanted body fluids of dead bodies for something, fluids from the mouth and vaginal area,” he is heard confessing. “She is a woman who operates a chop bar presently”.

The Kwamekrom District Court has remanded a 38-year-old trader, Tetteh Mawusi, also known as Joy Mawusi, into prison custody for alleged murder and use of an offensive weapon.

Tetteh’s plea was not taken, and he will reappear in court on May 14, 2024. His accomplice, Apreseh Joseph, also known as Dompey, is currently at large.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth-Vincent Kpodo, prosecuting, informed the court presided over by Madam Maame Abena Dartey Lartey that the complainant is an Assemblyman of Nkonya Nstumuru, while the suspect, Tetteh, is a resident of Alavanvo Wudidi.

According to ASP Kpodo, on August 1, 2022, at about 0700 hours, Daniel Yaw Brempong, aged 33 and now deceased, was on his way to his farm when he was ambushed, shot, and killed by the suspect and others who are currently at large.

A search conducted in the room of the suspect later led to the retrieval of two locally manufactured weapons, which were forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing, as two empty cartridges were found at the crime scene. Test results indicated that the empty cartridges were discharged by one of the weapons found in the suspect’s room.

During investigations, some suspects were arrested and put before the court, and a duplicate docket was prepared and forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for advice.

“Per the advice received, this suspect, Tetteh Mawusi, alias Joy Mawusi and one other, Apreseh Joseph, who is on the run should be arrested and charged for the offence of murder, while the earlier suspects be discharged for lack of evidence connecting them to the crime.”

“The pastor put his life on the line that he will do whatever it takes to save my life. Because we were told that if he saves me and he dies, he would use his soul to save me. The pastor did not focus on his position or fame. He doesn’t know me.

“The pastor did something that only family does. You see. Now the pastor says he will close down the church. Grace Gift, I’m also going to shut down Grace Gift. If God says the pastor will continue to run his church, not even pethidine can stop it,” she said.
