Migrant stabbed student over deportation from UK

In order to be sent back home, an immigrant from Iraq stabbed a university student at this very moment.

After being stabbed by Rebaz Mohammed, 28, last December while walking through Southampton’s Hoglands Park, Ellis Wheeler, 18, was left fighting for his life.

In horrifying video, Mohammed is seen removing a kitchen knife from his coat and inserting it into the teenager’s back, puncturing his lung in front of witnesses.

Mr. Wheeler was able to avoid more strikes and flee, but before he could obtain medical attention, he eventually passed out.

Luckily, a ‘heroic’ friend was there to call 999 and put pressure on his wound until the police arrived.

Mohammed was arrested at the scene and told officers he had launched the attack because he wanted to be deported from the UK.

His defence lawyer, Richard Tutt, told Southampton Crown Court: ‘Mohammed believed, from what he had been told, that he needed to commit an offence that was serious enough.

‘He presents as a very naive person. He has experienced remorse, or at least sorrow.’

Mohammed, who initially came to the UK illegally on a small boat, lived in a hotel in Bournemouth, Dorset, at the time of the crime.

He had no work or money and had been ‘making what efforts he could to be deported’.

He had previously been cautioned for criminal damage and battery and in May 2022 and served 12 weeks in jail for racially aggravated harassment and stalking.

Jurors were told that Mr Wheeler, a first year Solent University student, remained under observation for five days after he underwent surgery for a collapsed lung.

He ended up missing his exams and still struggles to sleep as he his dogged by anxiety, the prosecution said.

Judge Brian Forster KC sentenced Mohammed, who admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife, to six years imprisonment with a four-year extended licence.

Speaking directly to the defendant, Judge Forster said: ‘When anyone carries out an attack with a knife it is down to chance.

‘This was an indiscriminate attack. Any member of our community could have been the victim.

‘You were willing to inflict a serious injury with a weapon to achieve your own end. You could have killed the victim.’

Commending the victim’s friend, the judge said he ‘may have saved his life’ and awarded him £250.

  • 2023 budget: ‘I didn’t sit in to listen to Ofori-Atta, I felt it was unprincipled to do so’ – Murtala

Tamale Central Member of Parliament Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has said that he did not sit in the chamber of Parliament to listen to the Finance Minister’s presentation of the 2023 budget statement.

He said he did so from his office.

He stated that it would have been unprincipled to sit in Parliament to listen to Mr Ken Ofori-Atta who is being asked to leave office.

“It was an unprincipled decision to sit in. This is a man who has been called to go by over half of Members of Parliament, he is no longer fit to man the office of the Ministry of Finance.

“As a Minority, we also think the man is no longer fit to be in office so I felt it was not principle for me to sit in. Those who had the courage to sit in said they were disappointed to sit in to listen to him,” Murtala said on the Big Issue on TV3 with Roland Walker on Friday November 25.

The opposition Members of Parliament through their leadership announced in a statement that they would be in Parliament Thursday November 24 for the 2023 budget presentation by the Finance Minister.

This, they said, was without prejudice to the investigation that is being done by the 8-member committee on the Finance Minister following the allegations they made against him.

“While we remain committed to seeing through the process to censure the Finance Minister , we are mindful of our duty to carry out oversight on the Executive and preserve the interest of the Ghanaian people whose livelihoods the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has severely undermined through mismanagement of the economy,” a statement issued by the Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said.

This was after the New Patriotic Party lawmakers rescinded their decision to boycott the presentation if Mr Ofori-Atta was going to present it.

The Members of Parliament wanted another person other than Mr Ofori-Atta to do so but after an intervention by the NPP leadership, they have agreed to allow him to present the statement.

The economy has been going through struggles with the local currency performing badly against the major trading currencies especially the Dollar.

  • Five communities in Techiman Municipality submerged, residents displaced

Some houses in five communities in the Techiman South Municipality of Bono East Region have been submerged, resulting in the displacement of some residents and inaccessible roads.

The Tano River, which is not far away from the communities, annually overflowed its banks, leaving residents stranded and unable to undertake their daily socio-economic activities.

“The waters drained into our rooms to destroy our properties whenever the river become flooded during the rainy season. We need urgent attention from stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament and the Assembly to desilt the river as sand and other solid objects have choked and silted the river”, the residents said.

Some inner roads linking the communities are occasionally flooded during rains, posing danger to residents, especially workers and traders, who use the roads daily.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Anyinabrem, Mr. Kasim Abdul Karim, the Assemblyman for the electoral area, expressed worry about the devastating situation and described it as a “threat to life and a nightmare whenever the rains set in”.

Mr. Karim said before the flooding, two schoolchildren who tried to pass through a flooded road leading to their homes nearly lost their lives and had to be rescued.

In an interview with the GNA, Mr. Kwame Mohammed, the Techiman Municipal Human Resource Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), said the organisation had taken steps to address the flooding problems and related challenges but needed the cooperation of the people to effectively address the situation.

Mr. Mohammed said as part of efforts to address flooding in the Municipality, the organisation in collaboration with the Municipal Assembly, had earmarked about five flood-prone areas, comprising Anyinabrem, New Onyinasi, Twimia-Kuase, Twimia-Nkwanta, and Nana Abena Market to improve the drainage systems to avert the reoccurring of floods.

He added that NADMO had demolished some weak structures, including houses that were built on waterways whilst some landlords had been arraigned before the law court to explain why they had built on waterways.

Mr. Mohammed said the Municipal office of the organisation had formed disaster prevention volunteer groups to monitor and report to the office individuals and groups engaging in activities likely to cause disasters while zonal officers were also on the ground providing education to the people on the need to stay away from disaster-prone areas.

  • Egypt court seeks live TV execution of woman killer

A court in Egypt has called for a legal amendment to allow live broadcast of the execution of the killer of a female student.

Egyptians were horrified after video footage went viral last month purportedly showing Mohammed Adel stabbing to death Nayera Ashraf, who rejected his advances, outside her university.

In a letter to parliament, the court that sentenced the 22-year-old to death said the broadcast of even a part of the proceedings could achieve the goal of deterrence.

Egypt does not broadcast executions, which are always carried out by hanging inside prisons.

A 2015 United Nations survey said nearly eight million Egyptian women were victims of violence.
