Arsenal set to increase ticket prices for the second consecutive year – Sources

Arsenal plans to increase ticket prices by an average of 3.7% next season, marking the second straight year of price hikes after a 5% increase this season, sources told ESPN.

Unlike Arsenal, clubs such as Liverpool, Brentford, and West Ham have committed to freezing ticket prices. Sources say Arsenal’s decision follows discussions with supporters and is partly influenced by the club’s financial results.

Last month, Arsenal reported a loss of £17.7 million ($21.8m) for the financial year ending May 31, 2024.

The financial report also revealed a £630,000 pay rise for Arsenal’s highest-paid director (whose name was not disclosed) and a 40% increase in player wages.

Over the past four years, the club has accumulated total losses of £238m. However, they recorded £617m in revenue last year, largely due to their return to Champions League football.

To support fans, Arsenal has kept discounts for senior citizens in line with recommendations from the Football Supporters’ Association.

The club is also introducing a 19-game season ticket, allowing fans to attend only Premier League matches. Those who opt for this plan could save nearly £400 compared to the current full-season ticket.

This season, Arsenal’s most expensive season ticket costs just over £2,000.

Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli set for return in April – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is hopeful that wingers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli will recover from injury in time for their home clash against Fulham on April 1.

Both players are sidelined with hamstring issues, while forwards Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Their absence has significantly impacted Arsenal’s attacking options, with the team failing to find the net in a 1-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday and a goalless draw against third-placed Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Arteta acknowledged that even if Saka and Martinelli return after the international break, their fitness will need to be carefully managed.

“I think so, but again let’s see how they evolve in the next few weeks to make the right steps,” he told reporters.
“After that, they’ve been out for a long, long time, so we’re going to have to integrate them as well gradually. They are evolving well but they’re still a bit far.

“We have a meeting tomorrow to discuss where they are, especially Gabi, who probably has a chance before Bukayo to come in, but how soon that is, we’ll have to see how it evolves in the next week or 10 days.”

Arsenal remain second after the draw at Forest but have fallen 13 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Arteta will now turn his attention to PSV Eindhoven for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday and must quickly find a solution for their goal-scoring woes.

“We have another day or two now to think before the PSV game, all the options that we have especially against a team that is in a low block,” Arteta said.

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta says it will be ‘over his dead body’ to give up on title race

Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he will never give up on Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League, saying, “Over my dead body.” However, he admitted that his team must achieve something never seen before in league history to claim the title.

Arsenal’s title hopes took a major hit last weekend after a shocking home defeat to West Ham. To make matters worse, Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City widened the gap, leaving Arsenal 11 points behind the league leaders.

When asked if he would concede the title, Arteta defiantly said: “Over my dead body.

“If not I will go home. Mathematically it is possible. You are there, you have to play every game, suddenly three days ago we could close a gap and you are like ‘you are one-and-a-half games away.’ It doesn’t matter, we have to continue to go.”

“The difficulty is higher than three days about but if you are going to win the Premier League you have to do something special. If you are going to win the Premier League with the circumstances we have you will probably have to do something that nobody else has done in the history of the Premier League.”

The loss to West Ham further highlighted Arsenal’s shortage of attacking with options, with Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri the only available forwards at the moment.

Arteta confirmed that injured duo Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are “progressing really well” but said they are still some way away from making a comeback.

The one positive Arsenal could take from the game was the return of Ben White, who made his first appearance since November after undergoing knee surgery.

“He is a player that has given us something very special, especially in that right unit. We haven’t played the right unit at all this season with him, Bukayo and Martin [Ødegaard]. It is great to have him back, more options, his energy, the way he is around the team. He certainly has been missed,” he said.

Arsenal will look to get their faltering title charge back on track at Nottingham Forest, and Arteta was full of praise for his counterpart Nuno Espirito Santo for the job he’s done to take the club into third-place this season.

“Unbelievable. Not only with [Forest] but what he did at Wolves, it was incredible. Huge pride for him, the coaching staff, the club as well,” he said.

“What they have generated after coming into the Premier League is a remarkable story so well done to them.”

I had no choice – Mikel Arteta explains Partey’s position in Aston Villa clash

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta has defended his decision to use Thomas Partey as a right-back during their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The Ghana international was deployed in that role against Unai Emery’s side last weekend. While Partey faced some criticism for his performance, Arteta explained the tactical reasoning behind the change.

“I had no choice. I didn’t have another right full-back,” he said.

“Who plays when Jurrien [Timber] isn’t available or his load is too high? I didn’t have another right-sided centre-back [against Aston Villa],” he added.

Arsenal seemed set for two wins in a row after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz gave them a 2-0 lead.

But Aston Villa responded, with Youri Tielemans scoring first and Ollie Watkins taking advantage of Partey’s defensive mistake to level the game against goalkeeper David Raya.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who earlier defeated Brentford 2-0 and still have a game in hand.

Arsenal will try to get back to winning ways when they face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League tonight, followed by a Premier League match against Wolves this weekend.

  • “We have to be prepared” – Mikel Arteta on Partey’s departure

“We have to be prepared” – Mikel Arteta on Partey’s departure

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has suggested that Thomas Partey, the Black Stars midfielder, could leave the club at the end of the season.

During a pre-match press conference, Arteta discussed Arsenal’s plans for the future, noting that some players will have expiring contracts.

When asked about the possibility of signing Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi, Arteta stressed the importance of being ready for changes in the squad.

“We have some situations with contracts expiring. We have to be prepared,” he said, as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Arteta’s remarks imply that Arsenal might not renew Partey’s contract, potentially ending the Ghanaian midfielder’s five-year tenure at the club.

Partey made the move to Arsenal in 2020 when the club triggered his £45 million release clause from Atlético Madrid.

Arsenal’s Arteta says EFL Cup balls fly a lot, they are tricky

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains confident that his team can still make it to the Carabao Cup final, despite admitting that they need to get better at handling the “tricky” ball used in the competition.

The Gunners suffered a 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the first leg of the semi-final on Tuesday, with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon sealing the win for the Magpies.

Arsenal created a lot of chances, taking 23 shots during the match. However, only three were on target. Gabriel Martinelli hit the post, and Kai Havertz missed a golden opportunity with a wayward header.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta addressed the missed opportunities, stating that he wouldn’t ask his players to change their approach but highlighted the challenges posed by the ball used in the tournament.

“We kicked a lot of balls over the bar, and it’s tricky that these balls fly a lot so there’s details that we can do better,” he said.

“But at the end that’s gone – there’s no way back, it’s about the next game and that’s our world, the reality is our world.

“It’s just half-time. When I see the team play, and how we deal with a lot of situations and play against a very good team, I must say I have full belief that we can go out there and do it.”

Prior to the defeat by Newcastle, the Gunners had scored 11 goals in three EFL Cup ties so far this season.

The ball in the competition is made by Puma, while the ball used in the Premier League is manufactured by Nike.

“It’s just different,” said Arteta when asked to go into more detail about the ball.

“It’s very different to a Premier League ball, and you have to adapt to that because it flies different.

“When you touch it the grip is very different as well, so you adapt to that.”

  • Partey’s future at Arsenal – Mikel Arteta speaks

Partey’s future at Arsenal – Mikel Arteta speaks

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed plans to hold talks regarding the future of midfielder Thomas Partey, recognizing the Ghanaian international’s crucial contribution to the squad.

At 31, Partey has enjoyed a strong comeback this season, having already accumulated 799 minutes in the Premier League—significantly more than his total playing time in the previous 2023/24 season.

Since his transfer from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, Partey has featured in 13 games this season, scoring once and starting in 12 of those matches. Despite occasional criticism, Arteta commended Partey’s current form and flexibility on the field, particularly as the player’s contract is set to expire next summer.

“The one thing we needed was Thomas to be at the level we wanted,” Arteta told reporters on Friday.

“He’s working hard and playing really well in different positions, adapting to various demands, and he’s coping excellently. He’s a big player for us,” Arteta said, adding, “He’s in a really good place, and we’ll have these discussions [about his future with Arsenal].”

Originally, Arsenal had planned to allow Thomas Partey’s contract to conclude without pursuing an extension. However, his recent performances have opened up the possibility of reconsidering this approach. Partey’s experience and strong form this season could prove invaluable for Arsenal’s squad depth as they look ahead to the 2025/26 season.

Partey has also attracted interest from clubs like Barcelona and Juventus. While these links remain speculative, his skill set and presence could be crucial assets, especially if Arsenal seeks to maintain a competitive edge both domestically and in European competitions.

  • ‘I will choose facts over words’ – Arteta on ‘dark arts’ claims

‘I will choose facts over words’ – Arteta on ‘dark arts’ claims

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended his team’s tactics in their 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday, calling them “normal.”

The Gunners conceded a 98th-minute equaliser at the Etihad Stadium after being reduced to 10 men when Leandro Trossard was sent off in stoppage time of the first half.

Arsenal faced criticism for time-wasting, with City players John Stones and Kyle Walker accusing them of using “dark arts” to protect their 2-1 lead.

However, Arteta argued that his team had no choice but to defend deeply due to City’s numerical advantage, pointing to a moment earlier in the match when Guardiola’s side was temporarily down to 10 men following Rodri’s injury.

“Well, we had to play the game that we had to play. The first 15 minutes, we couldn’t. They [City] played 30 seconds with 10 men. Look what they did. It’s normal what they did,” said Arteta.

“Unfortunately we’ve been in the same situation. We were in that same situation with Granit [Xhaka] when we lost 5-0 [in 2021]. So we’d better learn. If not, I would be very thick.”

David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Gabriel Martinelli all went down with cramps during the second half at the Etihad, leading to accusations of time-wasting.

But Arteta says the Gunners will be without injured players for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie against Bolton.

“I always prefer the facts to words, or supposing things,” said Arteta.

“Let’s see who’s available tomorrow, and then we can talk about dark arts or these things.

“Unfortunately, yes, there will be a few players not available.”

Asked if any of the injuries sustained against City were serious, Arteta said: “We have to wait. One of them.”

Trossard’s second booking at the Etihad came after he kicked the ball away following a foul on Bernardo Silva.

Arteta says Arsenal have been preparing for the Manchester City game since pre-season

Arsenal concludes a demanding week of away matches with a challenging encounter against defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League this Sunday.

Manager Mikel Arteta, 42, revealed that his team has been preparing for this pivotal clash since the pre-season.

Following their victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal traveled to Bergamo, where they secured a goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday.

However, there’s little time for recovery, as they now face City on the weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s squad has narrowly defeated Arsenal for the title in the past two seasons, and once again, both teams find themselves at the top of the league standings after four matches, with City holding a two-point advantage.

“We’ve been preparing for this since pre-season. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it’s extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days,” Arteta said.

“But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally, and tactically.

“We’re making sure that everyone is ready for it because we’re going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break.”

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder’s return date.

“We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he’ll be out for,” the Spaniard said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

“We wanted the same as them, we’re not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game,” he said.

Although City have had Arsenal’s number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta’s side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at The Etihad Stadium.

“We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances,” he said.

“This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we’ve made another step and we can compete.”

  • Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard to be sidelined for weeks over ankle injury

Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard to be sidelined for weeks over ankle injury

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard will be sidelined for an extended period due to a serious ankle injury sustained while representing Norway, according to manager Mikel Arteta’s statement on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old midfielder was forced to leave the pitch during Norway’s Nations League match against Austria on September 9 in Oslo and was seen returning to London on crutches.

Ødegaard’s injury caused him to miss Sunday’s North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Arteta provided this update in anticipation of Arsenal’s first Champions League match against Atalanta in Bergamo on Thursday.

“The scans showed that he’s got some damage, especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle,” said the Spaniard.

“It’s something quite significant, so we’re going to lose him for a while.”

Arteta, whose side are second in the league and two points behind Manchester City, said he hoped it would not be months, “but let’s see.”

Ødegaard has become a key player for Arsenal, missing only a handful of games over the last three seasons, and a lengthy absence will come as a huge blow.

“He’s our captain. He’s been one of the biggest and best players in our team,” continued Arteta.

“Our identity is very linked to how he plays and behaves. It’s a big test for the team to see how able we are to show a different face.”

Norway coach Stale Solbakken told VG newspaper he had been fully updated about the injury and was “preparing for a life without Martin.”

“We have to take it week by week and day by day. Some types of damage go faster and some go slower,” he said.

  • Arteta plans to negotiate a new contract with Arsenal after the summer

Arteta plans to negotiate a new contract with Arsenal after the summer

Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence in negotiating a new contract with Arsenal after the transfer window shuts, reaffirming his commitment to the club.

In a July interview with ESPN, the Spanish manager mentioned he didn’t foresee any problems in securing an extension.

However, the Premier League season has kicked off without any renewal of his current contract, which is set to expire next summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are close to completing their third signing of the window, as Mikel Merino nears a £32 million ($42m) move from Real Sociedad. This follows the recent acquisitions of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and the permanent signing of David Raya from Brentford.

Asked if the attention would shift to his own future once the window closed on Aug. 30, Arteta said: “Yes. The focus has been on the transfer window. We had quite a lot of things to do and discuss.

“We are on it and we will take care of that in the right moment. I am very grateful first of all for where I’m sitting and the people I work with every single day because it’s really difficult to find that harmony, trust, belief and alignment in the vision.

“It’s something I always mention because I believe we still have an unbelievable time ahead of us. It’s very exciting and I am very excited about it.”

Pushed on whether he saw emulating the nine-year tenures of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool as a target, Arteta said: “I see today and tomorrow. That is the reality as managers and we have to live with that urgency.

“Looking two, three years down the line, you have to plan because what happens to the club afterwards depends on how good the results we get are – that’s it. That’s the reality.

In the meantime, do your best and enjoy it if you can.”

Arsenal are actively exploring attacking prospects, with Nico Williams of Athletic Club being a top target.

When questioned about potential transfers as the window closes—especially with Eddie Nketiah nearing a £30 million transfer to Nottingham Forest—Mikel Arteta acknowledged the need for preparedness.

He stated, “We must stay vigilant as anything can occur, and it’s crucial to be ready, particularly in the final week of the window.”

“You have to be alert and prepared because a lot of surprises can come, for many different reasons and we are prepared.”

Arteta did however distance Arsenal from any potential move for Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.

Arteta speaks on future of Eddie Nketiah, Smith Rowe, Nelson with club

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken about the futures of Emile Smith Rowe (23), Eddie Nketiah (25) and Reiss Nelson (24) in his latest press conference.

After the Gunners’ 1-1 draw (won after penalties) with Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, Arteta has been open about the possibility of losing three top talents this summer.

Speaking on Smith Rowe the Arsenal boss said: “Yeah, there are things happening in the background at the moment. We decided the best thing to do was to keep him away from the game today.”

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Fulham in recent days and could leave the North London club if not given the chance in the first team.

Speaking on Nketiah and Nelson he said: “A lot of players are being linked with potential moves. One way or the other. It’s normal.

“What I really like are the players that we have, the levels that they are showing. Especially the commitment, you can see it today just talking about those two the way they performed.”

Arteta is clearly impressed by the duo after this morning’s performance but it is clear that many young players are looking to move away from the club as more game time is available elsewhere.

Arsenal’s Arteta lauds backup goalkeeper Karl Hein after penalty heroics in Los Angeles friendly

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised backup goalkeeper Karl Hein for his “good performance” following his penalty-saving heroics in a friendly against Bournemouth.

With regular keepers David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale on a break after their national teams, Spain and England, reached the Euro 2024 final, Hein took on the role of senior goalkeeper during Arsenal’s three-match tour in the United States.

The Estonian shot-stopper seized the opportunity to impress Arteta in the pre-season match against the Cherries.

The game at Dignity Health Sports Park ended in a 1-1 draw, with Fabio Vieira scoring for the Gunners in the 18th minute.

The match then went to a penalty shootout, where Hein shone by saving penalties from Philip Billing and Ryan Christie, ultimately leading Arsenal to a 5-4 victory in the shootout.

Arteta was delighted with Hein’s performance and stated: “I’m very happy for him. Obviously, he had to be really patient and wait for his opportunity.

He came back from his holidays really sharp and prepared; he knew that he had big games ahead of him and he started tonight, and I think he had a really good performance.”

Despite his impressive showing, a decision regarding Hein’s future at the club looms large.

The 22-year-old Estonia international signed a long-term contract extension in the summer, but the arrival of England youth international Tommy Setford from Ajax suggests Hein might be loaned out to gain regular playing time.

“That’s the conversation we are having,” said Arteta.

“Obviously, David and Aaron are away at the moment and we are really really short in that position, but we want to develop our players – especially a player like Karl who has big potential and a big future ahead of him.

He needs to play games, so we’re going to explore that option as well.”

Hein’s heroics in the penalty shootout against Bournemouth have showcased his potential and readiness to step up when needed.

As Arsenal continue their pre-season preparations, the young goalkeeper will have another chance to demonstrate his skills against Premier League giants Manchester United on July 27.

Iraola, Pep others in five-man shortlist for Premier League Manager of the Year award

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are among the five nominees for the award.

Iraola earned his spot on the shortlist following a remarkable debut season with Bournemouth.

Despite a challenging beginning, the coach successfully guided his team to the top half of the table, earning recognition alongside esteemed managers like Arteta, Guardiola, and Klopp.

Emery, who has also had a successful campaign with Aston Villa, joins the quartet. Villa aims to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the next season’s Champions League.

Bournemouth endured a winless streak in their initial nine matches of the season. However, Iraola’s squad secured a victory against Burnley on October 23rd, marking their first three-point haul.

As the Premier League resumes this weekend, all five managers and their teams are set to return to action.

Arteta and Klopp will persist in their title race, with City confronting Fulham and Arsenal visiting Manchester United.

In the meantime, Liverpool will clash against Aston Villa on Monday, with Emery’s squad eyeing a potential top-four finish if results align favorably.

Mikel Arteta still in high spirits after loss to Aston Villa

Following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta has called on his Arsenal players to rise to the occasion and ensure that one setback does not derail their season.

Goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins handed the Gunners their first Premier League loss since New Year’s Eve, paving the way for Manchester City to secure their fifth Premier League title in six seasons if they win their remaining six matches.

Arsenal now confront a pivotal week ahead, starting with a trip to Bayern Munich on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, finely balanced at 2-2.

This is followed by a challenging visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have previously claimed victories over both City and Tottenham Hotspur at home this season.

    Arteta engages players during match

Asked if there was a danger their season could quickly fizzle out, Arteta replied: “If one result is going to do that then we are not strong enough. That’s very simple. We had one of the best performances that we’ve had all season in the first half against a really good team.

“It should have been three, four or more. It didn’t happen. In the second half, the momentum shifted. We could not control and generate what we did in the first half. We conceded two very poor goals and we lost the game.

“Congratulate the opponent and stand up. The moment is now to stand up and be counted. When you win and win and win for four months, it’s very simple to do it. The moment to do it is now.

“We don’t have any other solution. If you want to win championships, if you want to be there in the Champions League, when you have these moments, you have to stand up. If not, that means that you don’t have a quality that is very necessary.

“Now it’s a big test for us.”

He better have his head here – Arteta supports Partey’s contentment at Arsenal

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has expressed his full support for Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, urging him to extend his stay with the club.

Arteta highlighted the Gunners’ promising project and emphasized the importance of Partey remaining an integral part of it.

The Spanish gaffer praised the Black Stars deputy skipper, expressing his satisfaction with the Ghanaian player, who has one year remaining on his contract.

“Partey said he’s happy here? He’d better have his head here because we are playing for big things,” he said, as quoted by renowned journalist Fabizio Romano.

“He’s a top player, he’s under contract for one more year and I’m really happy with Thomas”.

Thomas Partey, addressing his uncertain future at the club, stated that he is only focused on Arsenal.

“My head is always here,” Partey noted after Arsenal’s win over Luton Town.

“This is where I choose to play. I’m really happy every time I’m on the field. I know a lot of speculations have been going on, but for me, I’m really happy to be here and to continue playing for this club.”

Thomas Partey joined the North London club in 2020, signing a five-year contract. Since then, he has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s resurgence under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta speaks about Partey’s comeback after month of injury setback

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at the return of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey to action after a four-month absence due to injury.

Arteta emphasised the importance of Partey staying fit for the remainder of the season.

Partey made his comeback in Arsenal’s commanding 6-0 victory over Sheffield United in the English Premier League on Monday.

The Gunners swiftly took a three-goal lead within the first 13 minutes and added two more before halftime against the league’s bottom side.

Having been sidelined since October 2023, Partey returned to the pitch as a substitute for Jorginho in the 65th minute of the match.

He had only managed five Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season prior to this game, with his last appearance being against Manchester City in October.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta expressed gratitude for Partey’s return but stressed the importance of the midfielder continuing to work hard to maintain his fitness throughout the season.

“Today, obviously, Thomas is available now to play a certain number of minutes. He needs to build that because it was his first minute after four months, which is a long time.

“And then, like everybody, you need to have the right to earn the minutes,” he said after the game.
Thomas Partey will be eager to receive more playing time when Arsenal hosts Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

  • Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of his team mastering the art of being “tricky” and “streetwise” in specific situations following Arsenal’s loss to Porto in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday.

Statistics revealed that the ball was in play for approximately 50 minutes during the match, indicating that Porto’s tactics had unsettled Arteta’s side.

Declan Rice subsequently encouraged his teammates to demonstrate greater “savviness” in future encounters.

Asked whether his players are capable of being “bad guys” on the pitch, Arteta told a news conference on Friday: “I don’t know [about being a] bad guy but you have to be tricky. You have to be smart, you have to be streetwise, and you have to try to take advantage of every situation, and they know that.

“That’s a thing that has to be developed. The best players they have, they have that.”

Arsenal have been in superb form in the league in 2024; they have scored 21 goals and conceded just two, winning five consecutive matches in the process.

If Arsenal secures a victory against Newcastle on Saturday, they will narrow the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points. Liverpool, managed by Jurgen Klopp, are set to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Despite the potential for Arsenal to gain ground, Arteta believes that his team is perceived as outsiders in the Premier League title race.

“I feel a lot of excitement, especially internally, because we are right in the mix and we want to continue to be there because we are in the Champions League,” Arteta said.

“We have a fantastic game to play at the Emirates and externally, it probably is different because the expectations are much more focused in the other two teams [Liverpool and Manchester City].”

Arteta was cleared of a Football Association charge in December following comments he made about the officials in charge of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park in the reverse fixture in November.

The Arsenal boss branded the VAR’s decision to award Newcastle’s winning goal “a disgrace” in his post-match news conference, but said on Friday that he feels as though refereeing decisions have improved since he voiced his opinion.

Arteta downplays Arsenal’s Champions League history

Mikel Arteta dismissed Arsenal’s past shortcomings in the Champions League knockout stages as “irrelevant” and urged his players to forge their own path towards a dream final at Wembley.

The Gunners are set to take on FC Porto at Estadio do Dragao in the first leg of the round-of-16 clash on Tuesday, aiming to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.

Arsenal endured seven consecutive exits at the last-16 stage between 2011 and 2017, with Arteta himself involved in five of those defeats.

However, the Spaniard emphasised that the past does not define the present, especially as the club did not even qualify for the competition again until this season.

Only Mohamed Elneny remains from the squad that lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern in 2017 and Arteta said: “The players know that we have not been in the competition for seven years, obviously as some of them were here and they know the story.
“And they know that what happened in the past is irrelevant. It is the challenge and ambition that we have now to go through.

Someone called [Lionel] Messi was another obstacle [in those years] for Bayern Munich, that we faced three times.
“This competition is what it is. Individual quality is extremely important. It comes down to details and you need your players at their best when the occasion arises. Tomorrow, for sure, we’ll need that.

“We don’t have the experience; that’s the reality. Ninety-five percent of these players haven’t played in this competition, they haven’t played in the last 16; I haven’t [managed in this stage]. But they have so much energy and enthusiasm to play well and that’s our desire and how we’re going to play the game.”

Arsenal finished at the top of Group B, winning four out of six matches. Despite their relative lack of experience, the Gunners are viewed as favourites to advance against Porto, who suffered defeats both at home and away against Barcelona during their group stage.

When questioned about whether winning the competition should be seen as the ultimate achievement in European club football, Arteta pointed out the potential opportunity to play in this year’s final, which is scheduled to take place in London.

“I don’t know if it is the best [competition],” he said. “But it should be incredible to have that feeling to lift that cup, in London — the first of June.
“It is there. It is in our minds. It is a dream but there are a lot of things you have to earn the right to do before that and tomorrow we have a big obstacle ahead of us. We are really looking forward to it.”

Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all stayed back in London, but Fabio Vieira has been included in the travelling party as he nears a return following groyne surgery in November.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight following their impressive 5-0 victory against Burnley.

The goals were scored by Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka (twice), Leandro Trossard, and Kai Havertz, securing a convincing win for the visitors.

Arteta said: “We have to believe we can win every game and we are approaching every game that way. When the team has that belief and confidence, something good can happen.

“We know what standards are required and we have to keep elevating those standards if we want to have a chance.

“I have that belief and confidence (we can win the title) because I see the players train every single day.”

On goalscorer Havertz, he added: “It was a brilliant individual action and overall, his performance again, like the past few months, was top

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has confirmed that Thomas Partey won’t be playing in the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest. This adds to the team’s challenges as they get ready for Premier League action this week.

After a convincing 5-0 win against Crystal Palace in their last game, Arsenal aims to continue their winning streak.

However, they had a bit of a rough patch towards the end of 2023.

To get back into the race for the league title, Arsenal knows they need victories in the upcoming matches. Nottingham Forest, fighting to avoid relegation, poses a potential challenge.

Arteta stressed the importance of being well-prepared for this match.

In addressing the team’s fitness concerns, Arteta disclosed that Thomas Partey remains unavailable for the forthcoming fixture.

The manager also provided an update on Declan Rice’s status, stating, “We’ve got some late decisions to make. Thomas won’t be one of those. We are still uncertain about a few players. Thomas is not in the squad.”

Tonight, the Gunners aim to overcome challenges and put on a strong performance against Nottingham Forest as they try to make a mark in the Premier League title race.

Jesus receives praises from Arteta for outstanding performance in game against Forest

Mikel Arteta praised the performance of Gabriel Jesus after the Brazilian forward scored and provided an assist in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Jesus, 28, secured his fourth goal of the Premier League campaign by slotting the ball through the legs of his former teammate Matt Turner from a tight angle.

He then delivered a precise pass to set up Bukayo Saka for his second goal in three games, sealing the win for Arsenal. Although Taiwo Awoniyi scored a late goal for the hosts, it proved to be only a consolation.

Despite ongoing discussions in the January transfer window regarding Arsenal’s need for reinforcements upfront, Arteta expressed his satisfaction with the performance of his No. 9, Gabriel Jesus, at the City Ground.

He said: “We really need him [Jesus] at his best. I had a great feeling before the game and I told him.

“He had some fluid in the knee and he was struggling. He was kicking every physio out there two days ago saying, ‘I want to be on that pitch’.

“He pushed everybody to be there and when someone has that attitude, that desire in this moment, something good is going to happen because of the ability and the quality to do it.

“He was magnificent today, I think.”

Mikel Arteta downplayed a heated full-time discussion between defenders Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White after Arsenal’s 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest.

The two players were seen exchanging words, particularly in response to Forest’s late goal, but Arteta expressed that the incident was not a cause for concern as the team secured the win. The manager seemingly sought to minimize any potential impact of the on-field disagreement, emphasizing the overall positive outcome of the match for Arsenal.

Arteta added: “That’s pushing each other and being not happy, conceding nothing. And I have to encourage that and promote it in the right way, in a respectful way.

“Sometimes after the game, it’s too emotional and too heated, but I love that the players are pushing each other and demanding excellence.

“Today we conceded a goal that is not at the level that we want.

“Now we’re going to have a massive game against Liverpool at the top of the table. And we’re going to have to be even better than today, for sure.”

“We are better when Thomas is in the team” – Arteta fired up for Partey’s return

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has stressed the team’s immediate need for Thomas Partey to return to full fitness.

He highlighted how the presence of the Ghanaian midfielder significantly enhances the overall performance of the squad.

Since October, Partey has been sidelined, but now he is on the brink of making a competitive comeback after an extended absence. As Partey resumes team training with Arsenal, Arteta eagerly anticipates his full availability, emphasising Partey’s strength and positive form.

Arteta underscored the pivotal role Partey plays in elevating the team’s performance and expressed the squad’s anticipation for his return. The manager’s eagerness highlights the importance of having a key player like Partey back in action for the team’s success.

“He always looks strong and very good. That’s not the issue; it’s that we need him,” said the Arsenal manager.

“And we need him fit and available because he makes us better.

“We are better when Thomas is on the team.”

Thomas Partey, the Ghanaian international, last featured for Arsenal in October 2023. During this time, he also played for his country in matches against Mexico and the United States.

Following his last appearance, Partey has been absent for a total of 21 games across various competitions. In the current season, he has made only five appearances, with four in the Premier League and one in the FA Community Shield.

As Arsenal prepares to face Nottingham Forest on Tuesday in their return to Premier League action, there is hope that Partey’s comeback will significantly boost the team’s performance. The anticipation of Partey’s return adds a sense of optimism for Arsenal fans, eager to see his impact on the upcoming matches.

  • Baseless reports! I’m so upset – Arteta fumes over Barca coaching role links

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his displeasure on Monday over reports linking him to a move to Barcelona.

Speculation about Arteta’s potential move to Barcelona surfaced on Sunday, following the announcement by Barca’s current coach, Xavi, that he would be stepping down at the end of the season, citing the need for a change at the club.

Arteta, however, seemed perturbed by these reports.

“What you read yesterday … it’s totally untrue. I’m really upset about it,” Arteta told reporters on the eve of Tuesday’s Premier League game at Nottingham Forest.

“I could not believe (it). I don’t know where it’s coming from. It’s got no source; it’s got nothing. And I think we have to be very cautious when you talk about personal things.

“There is a lot to do (at Arsenal) and we all share that ambition. We want more; we aren’t satisfied and the club wants another push to go to another level. We have everyone on board to achieve it,” he added.

Arteta expressed his optimism about having midfielder Declan Rice and defender Gabriel Magalhaes back in the squad. Both players sustained injuries during Saturday’s 5-0 home victory against Crystal Palace, in which Gabriel scored twice. Arteta is hopeful that they will recover and be available for future matches.

“We had some issues at the end of the last game so we will assess those players,” he said. “Rice is one of those players. He has done some work but he has missed some work as well. Hopefully, he will be ok. Gabriel is another one.”

Arsenal, who were top in December, have slipped to third on 43 points, five behind leaders Liverpool. Forest, who have won two of their last three league matches, are in 16th place.

Arteta regrets team’s ‘weakest’ display of the season

Mikel Arteta has characterised Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham as their “worst performance of the season,” labelling it “painful.”

Despite Bukayo Saka opening the scoring in the fifth minute, goals from Raúl Jiménez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid resulted in Arsenal’s second consecutive Premier League defeat, leaving them in fourth place on the table.

With the FA Cup third-round clash against Liverpool on the horizon, Arsenal won’t feature in the league until January 20. Arteta expressed the need for his team to rectify their course after another disappointing performance, following Thursday’s loss to West Ham.

“We certainly need that reset after today, because that’s going to be in our tummy for a few days,” Arteta said.

“The game against West Ham feels very different, so you can move on. It’s football; it can happen.

“What happened today cannot happen again, because if you do that, we will never have the chance to be where we want to be. Today could have been a beautiful day to end the year, that’s for sure.

“But these are the margins, and you have to try and find the bar. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror because today’s performance is the worst we have played all season.

“Painful and a sad day, that’s how I would sum it up. We had the chance to be top of the table after 20 games with the consistency that we’ve shown.

“We haven’t managed well enough to earn the right to win the game. Three days ago, we lost a game that we deserved to win; today was a very different story.”

Midfielder Declan Rice insisted Arsenal needed to be more ruthless after Saka’s early opening goal.

“Today, when you go 1-0 up, you need to take more control, have more self-belief, have more desire and your mentality needs to be better. We need to demand more from each other,” Rice said on Sky Sports.

“I am not saying we didn’t do it, because we still tried to push for more. But ultimately, Fulham have won the game and we have to look at why they won the game.

“Once we went 1-0 up, we had to push on again and go for more. In this league, there is no room to mess up. There are so many good teams around you, and obviously we want to be pushing up the top end of the table. It is a tough one to take today.”

  • Mikel Arteta cleared of FA Charge over post-match comments after Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle

Mikel Arteta cleared of FA Charge over post-match comments after Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been exonerated from a charge by the Football Association (FA) in relation to comments he made after the team’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United last month.

Arteta expressed his frustration over the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s goal, despite three VAR checks for potential infractions such as the ball going out of play, a foul, and an offside in the build-up.

Speaking immediately after the match, Arteta said, “It’s a disgrace. It’s embarrassing. That’s how I feel and that’s how everybody feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve got saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing. I’m sorry, it’s embarrassing.

Mikel Arteta has avoided a ban for his comments in the aftermath of Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle United. Getty
“I feel sick. That’s how I feel. I feel sick to be part of this. It is not good enough and we cannot accept that.”

Mikel Arteta, charged by the Football Association (FA) under Rule E3.1 for alleged misconduct related to insulting comments towards match officials and actions detrimental to the game, has been found “not proven” by an independent commission. The decision came after an investigation that involved Arteta attending a personal hearing

In the written reasons accompanying the decision, Arteta is described as an “impressive witness” who successfully argued his comments focused on a wider frustration with the VAR process rather than targeting a match official.

It read, “[In the post-match interviews], MA expressed his frustration at the VAR decision and the standard of refereeing and VAR decision-making in the Premier League.

“He did not descend into language which insulted or cast aspersions about particular officials, nor to language which reflected anything other than his reasonably held view, supported by others, that VAR decision-making and officiating standards require improvement.’”

Former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock, now with Newcastle, reportedly informed his ex-teammates that he thought the ball had exited play in the lead-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal. Additionally, it is disclosed that Arteta’s use of the term “disgrace” in Spanish carried a different connotation

“The word ‘disgrace’ used by MA in the Interviews ‘has a very similar spelling and pronunciation to the Spanish ‘desgracia’ … the Spanish word has connotations of misfortune, tragedy or bad luck rather than the connotations of the English equivalent, which suggest contempt, dishonour or disrespect,” continued the written reasons.

“While the English meaning may lead to interpretations of abuse or insult, this was not the intended meaning of the comments.”

Arteta was also said to have made “considerable efforts that he has made in the past [and continues to make] to work with other stakeholders [including the PGMOL and the Chief Refereeing Officer] in the pursuit of improving the standards of match officiating [including VAR officiating] in the Premier League” and that he had “frustration that such efforts [on his part and by others] had ‘failed to produce any meaningful improvements’ in those standards.”

Gabriel Jesus minimises Arsenal’s penalty claim during their loss to Aston Villa

Arsenal player Gabriel Jesus has reluctantly agreed with the decision not to give him a penalty in the Gunners’ 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, even though he said he was touched.

The team from North London lost their second game of the Premier League season at Villa Park. John McGinn scored a goal after only seven minutes, which made the difference.

Arsenal was mostly in control of the game, especially before and after halftime. They had chances to score a goal to tie the game, but they didn’t take advantage of them.

The Gunners thought that the referees made some unfair decisions. They wanted a penalty for Jesus but the referees didn’t listen. Kai Havertz also had a goal ruled out because of handball.

Douglas Luiz touched his friend Jesus on the back of his leg while he was controlling the ball in the area, but the referee and video assistant referee didn’t think it was enough to give a penalty.

Manager Mikel Arteta disagreed with the decisions made against his team, saying they were very clear, but Jesus was a bit more polite about it.

Afterwards, he talked to Premier League Productions and said: “I felt someone touch me, but I’m not sure about the rules, so maybe for them, it’s not a penalty. ”

I can’t do anything about it. I felt someone touch me, but it’s their choice.

I’m not sure if the goal was a handball or not. We don’t know, but we have to accept it and focus on doing better in the next game. Then maybe we can make some better decisions.

He said that he thinks his team played better than in the last game at Villa Park.

“I believe we were in control of the game. ” I believe we gave up a goal early and that changed the direction of the game.

We did well in the game. They have a great team with great players and they play really well. You can see it when they play. I believe we can win the game, but we need to concentrate on the next game now.

Arsenal is now in second place in the Premier League. Liverpool moved up to first place after beating Crystal Palace. The two teams will play against each other at Anfield in two weeks.

Mikel Arteta is happy with how quickly Kai Havertz has been improving lately, but he admits that his team still needs the experience of Granit Xhaka.

The Arsenal manager didn’t want to, but he let the Swiss player leave in the summer. The player had his best season at the club.

Arteta took a big risk by deciding to swap Xhaka for Kai Havertz, agreeing to a £65million deal in hopes of turning the 24-year-old into a midfielder.

Havertz had a tough time at first, but now he seems to be understanding his new job better. He has scored three goals in his last four games, showing that he is improving.

Arteta says that even though the team is doing better, they still miss Xhaka who left. The team was doing well in the Premier League.

He said to Sky Sports: “He was a very important player for our team. ” We miss Granit, yes. We are sad because we don’t have Granit with us. I also miss him because I care about him.

Havertz is playing really well now because he feels more confident. Arteta also said that he thinks everyone can sense what’s happening around them.

“When things aren’t good, it can affect you. ” When it’s very good, it can affect you as well.

‘I believe he felt the encouragement from all his fellow players and his club supporting him. ‘ And now, he feels the help from our community, which is really important and can make him even better. That’s why I think we’re seeing a really good version now.

We need to have more than one idea for what we want. Ultimately, we need to make sure that the player’s qualities fit the position and its requirements in order to make them stronger.

If something isn’t working, we need to make small changes so that it can have a positive impact on the team.

‘I think he needs to feel at ease so he can do a good job. ’

Arteta stated that the priority is ensuring Partey makes a thorough recovery to reach his optimal performance level.

Providing an update on the injured players at the club, Arteta noted significant progress in the recovery of Emile Smith Rowe.

“Emile has already been on the pitch doing some jogging, so I don’t know how long it’s going to take,” he told the club’s official website.

“Normally he is a quick healer, and Thomas is the same. We have to make sure that when they come back, they are at their best as well.”

“We don’t want to rush them, but at the same time, the team needs them because, at the moment, we are missing some key players.”

Additionally, he made an inexplicable error by throwing the ball onto the turf while attempting to send it forward from his gloves.

Despite these shaky moments, Ramsdale regained composure in the second half.

However, Arteta might have lingering concerns about the goalkeeper’s overall performance.

“Courage. He has big courage and a big personality and that’s what we need,” Arteta told reporters. “This is football. I’m so happy with the team. The way the team performed with the clean sheet We move on.”

Mikel Arteta has commended Aaron Ramsdale for his mentality at Weapons store after the goalkeeper’s dad said his child had ‘lost his grin’ in the wake of being dropped.

Ramsdale was dazed by Armory’s choice to sign David Raya borrowed from Brentford in the late spring, while it’s perceived that the Heavy weapons specialists have previously selected to make the arrangement super durable for £27 million one year from now.

Talking during the global break, Ramsdale’s dad, Scratch, reprimanded Arteta for his treatment of the goalkeeping circumstance at Weapons store and addressed why his child was offered another agreement in May when the arrangement was to sign Raya only three months after the fact.

‘In the event that Mikel Arteta needed David Raya as a matter of some importance, that is verifiable, that is valid. My main issue is the point at which I addressed Mr Arteta on the telephone before he marked Aaron, he said he needed Aaron,’ Scratch Ramsdale said.

‘However, presently, you know, David Raya’s back available and he’s had David Raya. He will be purchased [after his loan].

Arteta has taken Aaron’s smile away, it’s diffucult – Ramsdale’s father fumes at Arteta’s replacement of son for David Raya

Arsenal’s goalkeeper situation has come under scrutiny from Aaron Ramsdale’s father, who has voiced concerns about Mikel Arteta’s decision-making, suggesting that the Arsenal manager has made mistakes.

Initially, it seemed that the Gunners had solidified their long-term No. 1 choice by entrusting England international Ramsdale with the starting duties.

However, Arteta brought in David Raya from Brentford over the summer, and the Spaniard swiftly assumed the position as the first-choice goalkeeper.

Ramsdale has admitted to “suffering and hurting” after surrendering his spot, with his father telling The Highbury Squad that a sense of joy has been lost in the game for a usually confident and enigmatic character.

Nick Ramsdale has said: “Aaron’s lost that smile to when he was holding onto that ball at this moment in time. And it is difficult. It really is difficult to see him there and we all keep saying you need to keep smiling.”

Ramsdale senior went on to say of how Arsenal kept transfer business close to their chest, before then taking the decision to hand starting duties to Raya: “When I spoke to Mr Arteta on the phone before he signed Aaron, he said he wanted Aaron. But now, you know, David Raya’s back on the market and he’s had David Raya. Aaron is going to be the cup goalkeeper, and David Raya is going to be the main man unless something happens—an injury or a sending-off.

“Aaron’s got to live with that and he is living with that even though he’s not been told it. By anybody. You’ve got to give the guy a chance for God’s sake. Even though it’s been done, in my eyes, it’s been wrong and we can talk about that but it’s the decision. Really and truly, we’ve got to get behind David Raya. He’s part of the family now. Whether it’s only until May or June of next year, it won’t be; it’ll be longer in my eyes, but that’s by the by.”

Speculation has arisen about Aaron Ramsdale considering a move elsewhere, possibly in January or by the end of the season. The 25-year-old goalkeeper is contemplating his own future, aiming to secure regular playing time at the club level and enhance his prospects for further recognition with England as Euro 2024 approaches.

Arsenal have expressed their full support for manager Mikel Arteta following his criticism of the officiating during Saturday’s Premier League loss to Newcastle United.

Arteta called on the referees’ body (PGMOL) to examine the refereeing standards.

Arteta openly expressed his feelings of being “embarrassed” and “sick” after Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over his team.

He delivered a harsh critique of the match officials and the overall standards of the Premier League.

Despite an extended VAR review that considered whether the ball went out of play, if there was a foul in the build-up, and for potential offside, the goal was allowed to stand. This defeat marked Arsenal’s first loss of the league season.

“Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening,” the club said in a statement on Sunday.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world, with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.

“PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action, which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.”

The PGMOL has been under increasing pressure this season after several VAR decisions stirred debates, the most high-profile being the “human error” that led to a legitimate Liverpool goal against Tottenham Hotspur being chalked off.

‘Maybe he has seen something I haven’t’ – Eddie Howe on Arteta’s rants over Newcastle goal

Following Anthony Gordon’s controversial winning goal, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe responded to Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta’s post-match criticism of the refereeing decisions.

Gordon’s fourth goal of the year was initially awarded after three VAR reviews, involving a potential ball out-of-play situation, a foul by Joelinton on Gabriel, and Gordon’s potential offside.

Arteta expressed his frustration with the decision to the media after the game.

Howe disagreed with the Spaniard, as he said [via Shields Gazette]: “We’re stood by the side of the pitch, seeing VAR on the screen but with no pictures. I haven’t seen anything other than what I saw at the time. It looked like a good goal to me.

“Maybe he’s seen something I haven’t. I’ve only seen it with the naked eye, live. I had no idea what was going on with the VAR checks either so we were in the lap of the gods, really waiting like everyone else in the stadium.

“With every check it was going through, you’re thinking they’re going to find something wrong with it. It’s very bizarre to have three VAR checks but the goal was given.”

Arsenal suffered their first loss of the season, dropping them to third place in the standings.

They are currently three points behind defending champions Manchester City and two points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.

The Gunners will aim to rebound from this loss as they face Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday, November 8.

  • David Moyes defends Arteta’s line-up in Arsenal-West Ham clash

David Moyes defends Arteta’s line-up in Arsenal-West Ham clash

West Ham secured a well-deserved 3-1 victory at the London Stadium.

The goals came from Ben White’s own goal as well as strikes by Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, putting the home team in the lead.

Martin Odegaard managed to score a late consolation goal for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta made six changes to the Arsenal lineup, compared to the team that had achieved a 5-0 win against Sheffield United the previous Saturday.

Notable players like Declan Rice, William Saliba, and Bukayo Saka began the match on the bench against West Ham.

Arteta’s team selection had faced criticism from Arsenal supporters, but David Moyes, the West Ham manager, defended his counterpart’s decision to make changes for their Carabao Cup fixture.

When questioned about Arteta’s choice to shuffle his Arsenal lineup for the match, Moyes responded, “Having been involved in football for such an extended period and being one of the most experienced managers, I believe that managers are persistently queried about their team rotation decisions.”

‘It really surprises me that you haven’t; the journalists who watch all the football wouldn’t say, ‘Well, you’ve got 18 or 19 players in your squad who are probably good enough to play; you have a lot of football to play’.

‘They’ve got two games that those sort of questions you wouldn’t say you would take it near enough for granted that lots of the managers would change their team.

‘I find it quite surprising, really, not that you would ask, but I’m sure you’ve all considered that Arsenal have got Newcastle on Saturday, then they’ve got Sevilla, so they’ve got big games coming up.

‘That’s the way you see it but maybe there’s bigger things they see than maybe tonight’s game.’

West Ham will now play Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal in December.

  • Pochettino ‘protected me, he was like a father ‘ – Arsenal’s Arteta on relation with Chelsea manager

Pochettino ‘protected me, he was like a father ‘ – Arsenal’s Arteta on relation with Chelsea manager

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has disclosed that he shares a strong bond with Chelsea counterpart Mauricio Pochettino and regards him as a “father figure.”

Although they are presently coaching rival teams in the Premier League, they were once teammates at Paris Saint-Germain.

Arteta had a loan spell at PSG from Barcelona early in his professional career back in 2001, and it was during this period that he joined forces with Pochettino.

Despite Pochettino being a decade his senior, the Gunners boss has opened up about their close relationship.

Pochettino and Arteta spent a season and a half as teammates before Arteta’s move to Rangers. Nevertheless, they crossed paths once more when Arteta signed for Real Sociedad, while Pochettino returned to Espanyol.

Arteta has since flourished as a coach, with his Arsenal side delivering strong performances in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Pochettino has earned recognition as a respected manager through his tenures at Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, and PSG before his recent appointment with Chelsea in the summer.

Arteta has hailed Pochettino as a key influence on his career, alongside the likes of Pep Guardiola, Johan Cruyff and Arsene Wenger.

“Then one of the ones I have to say was Mauricio Pochettino because he was the first professional captain I had and he was like a father figure for me when I arrived at PSG,” he told Football365.

“We signed almost the same day and we all landed in the same hotel, five or ten minutes away from the training ground. We could not speak French; we were there by ourselves and we spent three months in that hotel together every single day.

“So we built a really strong relationship. He was 30 or 31 years old; I was 17/18 and he just put me under his arm, carried me and protected me. It was a joy to have someone like that.”

Arteta’s Arsenal is set to take on West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, while Chelsea will be facing Blackburn in their upcoming fixture.

  • Another injury sidelines Partey for weeks – Mikel Arteta confirms

Another injury sidelines Partey for weeks – Mikel Arteta confirms

Arsenal’s head coach, Mikel Arteta, has officially announced that Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey will be sidelined for several weeks due to a muscle injury he suffered.

During Arsenal’s commendable 2-1 victory against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 24 in Spain, the Black Stars’ deputy captain was notably absent from the squad.

This season, the defensive midfielder has participated in just five matches.

Fortunately, with the arrival of English midfielder Declan Rice, Arsenal has been able to secure some wins, a departure from previous seasons.

According to Arteta, he said, “He has got a muscle injury. We expect him to be out for a few weeks. He has more tests today. He picked it up in the last training session, the last kick on the ball before Sevilla”, according to Daily Telegraph reporter Sam Dean.

Partey made a return from a previous injury to contribute to Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City just before the international break.

While on international duty with the Ghana national team, he played a role in their 2-0 and 4-0 losses to Mexico and the United States in October.

However, concerns about Partey’s injuries have left many football fans uncertain about his future with the club. Fans have called on Arteta to sell him and find a suitable replacement to fill his position.

Currently, Partey, aged 30, is determined to work his way back into the team.

Nonetheless, there are reports indicating that he will consider his options in the upcoming Christmas period if the situation remains unchanged.

  • Arteta gives update on Declan, Saka others injury crisis ahead of Bournemouth clash

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, has disclosed that several key first-team players may be unavailable for their upcoming match against Bournemouth this Saturday.

Declan Rice, a summer signing for the team, had to be substituted at halftime during last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Arteta has revealed that Rice has not been able to participate in training this week due to a diagnosed back issue.

Furthermore, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the match against Spurs, have yet to return to training, raising concerns about their availability.

Additionally, Bukayo Saka, who was subbed out late in the north London derby and subsequently missed the midweek victory against Brentford in the Carabao Cup third round, may also be sidelined for the upcoming weekend fixture.

The Gunners boss told reporters: “Declan hasn’t trained yet; we have a session in an hour; we’ll get more news about him. Gabi [Martinelli] hasn’t trained; Leo is in the same situation; Saka is the same. They are all in the same pool; Willy [Saliba] had a knock, and Fabio [Viera] wasn’t involved. We have to assess them today.”

While Declan Rice’s substitution during the Spurs match was due to a reduction in his range of motion, Arsenal remains optimistic that his injury isn’t of a long-term nature.

Subsequent to his halftime departure from the game, a battery of tests has been conducted on the £105 million ($129 million) summer signing from West Ham in order to assess the extent of the issue.

Mikel Arteta faces a challenging dilemma in the next 24 hours regarding whom, if anyone, to take a risk with, especially considering the pivotal fixture against Manchester City in a week’s time and an upcoming Champions League journey to Lens on Tuesday.

As the match against Bournemouth approaches on Saturday, September 30 at the Vitality Stadium, Arteta is likely to have a severely depleted squad at his disposal.

  • Arteta commends Arsenal’s dominance but says team cannot keep relying on magic moments

Arteta commends Arsenal’s dominance but says team cannot keep relying on magic moments

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta commended his team’s mental fortitude following their dramatic 3-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

However, he emphasised the need for his team to secure wins earlier in matches rather than relying on late “magic moments.”

The win was sealed with Declan Rice’s goal in the 96th minute, and Gabriel Jesus added a third in the closing seconds, following Captain Martin Odegaard’s equaliser after Marcus Rashford’s opening goal.

“I love the mentality of the team—the determination, the eagerness to win,” Arteta said. “The team was very dominant and deserved to win the game, but the margins with this team are so small and it could have gone in a different way.”

Arsenal were held by Fulham the previous week after beating Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace by one-goal margins. They return to action on September 17 against Everton.

“The margins that we have in the later stages of the games are not big enough,” he added. “That’s something that we have to improve because you notice a lot of anxiety and you have to wait for a magic moment at the end. We don’t want to rely on that.”

Midfielder Rice, who joined from West Ham United for a club record 105 million pounds, scored his first Arsenal goal and said he felt no added pressure because of his transfer fee.

“I can’t control the price,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve been playing well at West Ham for a few years and I gave everything there. Since then, I’ve tried to block it out and do what I do best.

“There’s so much more to come. There’s more I can improve on and I’m feeling improvement.”

  • Gabriel Magalhaes receives message from Mikel Arteta after being benched

Gabriel Magalhaes receives message from Mikel Arteta after being benched

Mikel Arteta says Gabriel Magalhaes will play enough for Arsenal this season. He also said Gabriel knows why he hasn’t played in the team at the beginning of the new Premier League season.

Last year, the 25-year-old played in 48 matches for Arsenal. However, in their first two Premier League games this season, he has been a substitute instead of a starter.

Gabriel was supposed to play again in the game against Crystal Palace on Monday night after Jurrien Timber got injured. But instead, Arteta chose to keep Ben White playing with William Saliba in the middle of defense, and Thomas Partey started as the right-back.

Gabriel has been rumored to potentially join the Saudi Pro League, but Arteta strongly insists that he plans to play Gabriel extensively for Arsenal. Arteta also believes that Gabriel comprehends the reasons behind not starting in matches this season.

Gabi will play many games, and I am confident that he wants to increase the level of competition and help the team improve their performance. He wants them to become stronger, more dominant, and win more games. “That’s why we’re all here,” Arteta said.

Arteta discussed the upcoming Fulham game and the transfer window in Saudi Arabia during the press conference before the match.

When asked if he has told Gabriel the reasons, Arteta said yes, especially because Gabriel has played a lot of minutes and games with us in the past year.

I don’t know if he gets it, but I explained it to him.

I believe he knows why, but whether or not he agrees is another matter.

However, the most effective way to accomplish it is when you play. Simply inform me of my mistakes and errors, I am willing to accept criticism.

  • Mikel Arteta apologises to Fabio Vieira over less enough playing time

Mikel Arteta apologises to Fabio Vieira over less enough playing time

Mikel Arteta was very happy with Fabio Vieira’s performance in the second half against Fulham. He acknowledged that not granting the Portuguese player more opportunities to play this season was indeed his own error.

After a disappointing first year at Arsenal since his £35million transfer from Porto, Vieira might have thought that his opportunities to play in the first team would decrease even more with the arrival of Kai Havertz and the return of Emile Smith Rowe, who had recovered from his injury.

The 23-year-old player was absent in both of Arsenal’s opening matches against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace. He also began the game on the bench against the Cottagers.

Vieira came onto the field instead of Kai Havertz, 10 minutes into the second half. Arsenal was still losing the match, as Andreas Pereira scored in the first minute. The home crowd was surprised, but Vieira played really well for Arsenal.

The Portuguese player, who represents the Under-21 national team, earned a penalty for Arsenal. This allowed Bukayo Saka to score and bring the score level. The same player then set up Eddie Nketiah for what seemed like the winning goal, but Joao Paulinha scored a late goal to change the outcome.

Arteta said he should have done more after Arsenal didn’t win against Fulham.

  • Mikel Arteta receives significant boost as Gabriel Jesus was sighted returning to training

Mikel Arteta receives significant boost as Gabriel Jesus was sighted returning to training

On Thursday, Gabriel Jesus, an Arsenal player, rejoined the team for training sessions. This is good news for Mikel Arteta.

The Brazilian star has been unable to engage in any physical activities since the beginning of August after undergoing a knee operation.

Jesus was unable to play for around three months at the beginning of his time at the Emirates stadium because of a knee problem.

After the surgery earlier this month, fans were worried that the former Manchester City player would have to take a long break from playing.

Jesus was seen training with the Gunners today as they get ready for Fulham’s visit to north London.

Eddie Nketiah played in Arsenal’s first two Premier League matches this season because Jesus was not available.

The forward scored in a 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest, and caused a penalty in Monday’s victory against Crystal Palace.

Jesus probably won’t play against Fulham because he is working on getting physically fit.

  • Mikel Arteta provides update on health of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus ahead Crystal Palace game

Mikel Arteta provides update on health of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus ahead Crystal Palace game

Oleksandr Zinchenko is’very’ close to returning to full health, according to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, but the Gunners will be without Gabriel Jesus for a while.

Zinchenko missed the Gunners’ victory over Nottingham Forest on opening weekend as he continues to recover from a calf injury he suffered in May.

Since coming from Manchester City last season, the Ukraine captain has been a fan favourite, and now that Jurrien Timber is injured, his position in the team is even more crucial.

The good news is that Arteta claims the defender is getting closer to making a comeback.

On Thursday morning, Arteta told reporters, “He’s been training with us and hopefully we’re going to have him available very, very soon.”

Less encouraging news was reported regarding Jesus, who has been sidelined for the past two weeks due to having to have knee surgery.

The Brazilian is still a ways off from playing for the first squad, Arteta acknowledges.

“Gabby [Jesus] is still not available and not fit, but the rest are all good,” the Spaniard stated.

  • Arteta content with clubs current state, says this ‘where we want to be’

Arteta content with clubs current state, says this ‘where we want to be’

Mikel Arteta has emphasized that his Arsenal team isn’t burdened by the pressure of being anticipated to contend for the Premier League championship, expressing that “this is where we want to be.”

The Gunners came remarkably close to clinching their first Premier League title since the 2003/04 Invincibles season in the previous term.

Although they held the top position on the table for a significant portion of the season, a late stumble allowed Manchester City to surpass them and secure their third consecutive title.

With enhancements made to the squad through the acquisitions of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber and the potential addition of David Raya, Arsenal is anticipated to be in the mix once again.

Despite the potential pressure associated with such expectations, Arteta views them as more exhilarating than concerning, as he embraces this level of anticipation.

“I think it’s excitement. This is where we want to be. The competition for this year,, you see a lot of movements that they make,” he said via football.london.

New signings obviously swell the squad somewhat, giving Arteta more options, the lack of which hindered Arsenal down the stretch last season.

He highlighted the importance of making sure every player feels important no matter their role, along with the importance of having players that want the team to do well in any scenario.

“I think you have to treat everybody with the sense that they’re important, and to do that, you have to play matches,” he said.

“It tells you a lot about a human being what your contribution is when you’re not playing. I want players to have the feeling that they’re happy when the team wins regardless.”

Gabriel Jesus recently stated that due to surgery to address a knee issue, he would miss the start of the season.

He claims that his recuperation is progressing well and that he might return to play soon, but he will undoubtedly miss the first game.

“It’s a bit early still. He’s doing really well since his operation. Hopefully he can start to do some stuff next week,” Arteta added.

He has a number of forward options to choose from; Kai Havertz started up top in the Community Shield, and only Jesus and Mohamed Elneny are confirmed to be out of the picture this week.

The manager is raring to get off on the right foot and wants the fans to see a proper opening fixture in an Emirates opener.

“We love playing in front of our people. We have created an incredible atmosphere, and the boys and everybody, I think, can’t wait to be there tomorrow ready for the kick-off and to put on the performance that they deserve and that we want to do,” he said.

  • Arteta ‘happy’ with Arsenal’s transfer choices this season but poised for the unexpected

    Arsenal are satisfied
with their early transfers ahead of the new Premier League season, but the club has not ruled out any more business before the window closes, manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday.

Arsenal signed Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber for a total of over 200 million pounds in the close season, which allowed them to play a part in pre-seas

The north London side, who finished runners-up in the league last season, are also linked with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to compete with Aaron Ramsdale, but Arteta kept his cards close to his chest.

“We have no news on any incomings,” Arteta told reporters ahead of Saturday’s league opener at home against Nottingham Forest.

“At the moment we’re not planning to do anything but the window obviously is very unpredictable,” he added on any further transfer business.

“Things can happen, things we probably don’t wish. But we’re happy with what we’ve got.”

Arsenal has a bloated roster, with players expected to leave before the transfer window ends on September 1.

Nonetheless, Arteta emphasised the importance of strengthening the squad as the club prepares to compete in the Champions League this year.

“We’ve been trying to increase the depth of the squad and the quality as well, the ability to be more flexible and have more interactions with players that can make us better, that’s the whole point of it,” he said.

When asked if he could keep the whole squad happy with intense competition for places, Arteta said: “Football is a collective sport, and only 11 players play, and there are another 11 players, most of the time, are not happy with the situation.

“It’s how they deal with that, how they accept their role, because it’s going to change. Every three days, we’ll have a game.

“That tells you about their professionalism, when they play or not, what is your contribution to the team … I want players that feel happy when the team wins, regardless (of if they play or not).”

Arteta confirmed striker Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined after undergoing a knee procedure, but Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jorginho have recovered from muscle injuries to be available.

  • Mikel Arteta ‘refuses’ to apologise for waving imaginary card around during City-Gunners clash

Mikel Arteta ‘refuses’ to apologise for waving imaginary card around during City-Gunners clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, in response to receiving a booking for mimicking a yellow card gesture, has asserted that he “cannot change in three days” and has refrained from offering any apologies.

In the 2023–24 season, Arteta became the inaugural Premier League manager to be penalised under the new regulations that emphasise strict actions against those who vocally request cautions from referees and engage in confrontations with them.

Referees have been instructed to be vigilant in curbing such behaviours. Despite Arteta’s knowledge of these guidelines prior to a Community Shield encounter against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium, his caution in the first half for gesturing a yellow card motion towards Stuart Attwell indicated that he may not have fully internalised these directives.

Arteta told reporters afterwards, when asked about the new rules that he has already broken: “I cannot change my behaviour in three days. It’s a very difficult thing to do, and next time we cannot ask him to say, Okay, tomorrow we play with no offsides’ and the linesman says, What is he doing?’.

“We try our best, and I try my best. I understand the rules, and I understand where they’re coming from. But we can get frustrated there because sometimes we don’t know what part of the technical area we are. But it’s fine, we will adapt.”

Following Arsenal’s penalty victory over City, Arteta appeared to be in high spirits. The Gunners capitalised on yet another new directive that involves extended stoppage time. In the 101st minute, Leandro Trossard’s deflected equaliser found the net.

The decision to prolong matches significantly beyond the traditional 90-minute mark has garnered a varied range of reactions.

Arteta is a fan, with the Spaniard saying: “At the end, it’s about effective time. I think it’s really good to do that because it was going too far I think and now teams are going to have to think twice. Now we have to be prepared to play 100 minutes because it’s going to happen every single week.”

Arsenal, with silverware already under their belt, are set to open their 2023–24 Premier League campaign at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

  • Pep Guardiola fumes over new stoppage time rules after Community Shield loss against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola fumes over new stoppage time rules after Community Shield loss against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration with the new stoppage time rules following Manchester City’s loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Arsenal eventually winning 4-1 on penalties at Wembley. City had taken the lead with a goal, but Leandro Trossard’s deflected strike in the 111th minute denied them the victory.

The game saw eight minutes of added time initially, but due to the new rules aimed at combating time-wasting, referee Stuart Atwell allowed 14 minutes of additional time.

“This was a result of Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey requiring treatment for a clash of heads during the match. The extended stoppage time seemed to have an impact on the outcome of the match, leaving Guardiola visibly dissatisfied with the situation.

After the game, Guardiola expressed his frustration with the new rules: “It is not annoying, we have to get used to it. I had the feeling, not because we were winning 1-0, but just because I had the feeling that much didn’t happen to extend by eight minutes.

“But it is a good question for the international board [rule-making body, the International Football Association Board] and all the people because they don’t consult the managers, they don’t consult the players.

“What is their opinion, we have to accept it. Now the games will be 100 minutes, that’s for sure. It never happened today, and it took eight minutes. Imagine if they extended for goals every time you scored a goal in a game [that is] 4-3. You put 30 or 45 seconds on for seven goals, tomorrow morning 9 a.m. I am here playing.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta saw the other side of the argument. “It’s about effective time,” he said. “I think it’s really good to do that, because it was going too far, I think, and now teams are going to have to think twice. Now we have to be prepared to play 100 minutes because it’s going to happen every single week.”

City took the lead through Cole Palmer’s stunning effort in the 77th minute, and didn’t look threatened until Trossard’s stoppage-time strike took a huge deflection off Manuel Akanji.

    Guardiola and his players would,
of course, have liked to have won; City have now lost three consecutive Community Shields. However, they will take solace in the fact that in the seasons following the two previous defeats, they went on to be crowned Premier League champions.

  • Arsenal’s Nketiah vows to step up in Gabriel Jesus’ absence

Arsenal’s Nketiah vows to step up in Gabriel Jesus’ absence

Expressing his commitment to Arsenal, Edward Nketiah emphasized that Manager Mikel Arteta has faith in his capabilities and understands that he can deliver when given the opportunity.

Nketiah is determined to step up and address the scoring gap arising from Gabriel Jesus’ knee injury.

Jesus is expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks due to a minor knee surgery, a similar issue that necessitated his surgery in December last year, keeping him off the field for more than three months.

During Jesus’ previous absence, Nketiah emerged as a prominent figure, netting six goals in Arsenal’s initial six games after the World Cup in Qatar. Nonetheless, he hasn’t scored since January 2022, spanning across 14 matches.

In the recent preseason clash against Monaco in the Emirates Cup, Nketiah found the net, contributing to Arsenal’s 5-4 victory in the penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. The confirmation of Jesus’ latest injury setback followed this match.

“I don’t think I’m here to fill in for anyone,” Nketiah said. “I’m here to play and contribute to the team.

“Obviously, I believe in my abilities and I know I can contribute. The manager has got a tough decision and whenever he calls me, he knows I can deliver and I can help the team, so it’s just about us all collectively playing our part to achieve our goals.”

Reflecting on his run on the team during Jesus’ absence last season, Nketiah continued: “I just really enjoyed it and was able to improve myself, test myself, I played some really big games and I was able to help and contribute.

“So that’s what it is about, obviously playing at the highest level, competing for trophies and that’s what I want to do. That’s what I want to contribute.

“I pride myself on always being ready and whatever role the manager needs me to fill I will always make sure I do my the best and to the best of my ability so I can help the team — that’s what it’s all about.”

Arteta has the option to deploy Nketiah in a central role, although he also possesses the alternative of United States international Folarin Balogun. Additionally, winger Gabriel Martinelli and the newly acquired Kai Havertz could be utilized as forwards if the situation demands.

Nketiah, however, has expressed his enthusiasm for embracing the responsibility of spearheading Arsenal’s efforts in a season where elevated expectations loom.

These anticipations arise following the team’s second-place finish last season and a substantial investment of over £200 million in new signings during the summer.

“Yeah, of course,” Nketiah said. “It’s what we play football for. We train hard every day to get the opportunity to play at the weekend. So not just myself, there’s many players that can obviously play in that position.

“So we’re all ready, we are all good players, we’re all able to contribute at different points in the season, everyone’s going to have different roles. It’s just about being ready and contribute and hopefully I can do that throughout the season.”
