Rema features Michael Jordan in a commercial

A new commercial featuring Rema and NBA legend Michael Jordan has returned him to the trending list.

Rema and Chicago Bulls legend Jordan could be seen posing for the “JUMPMAN 23” advertisement in the star-studded picture.

Some of the iconic stars in the commercial included Luka Doncic, Gabby Williams, Teyana Taylor, Ryota Brown, Zion Williamson, and Jayson Tatum.

In February, Rema had alongside Burna Boy and Tems headlined the NBA All-star game halftime show.

The Afrobeats-themed event which took place in Utah, United States of America saw the trio further spread the ‘gospel’ of Africa’s most popular music genre on the global stage.

  • Larsa Pippen addresses alleged Marcus Jordan romance after getting heckled at chargers game

After getting heckled at a recent Los Angeles Chargers game, Larsa Pippen has responded to critics of her alleged relationship with Michael Jordan’s son.

Pippen and Marcus Jordan were spotted in the stands of the game by a fellow spectator who questioned their romance. “Hey Larsa, that’s what you’re doing? You’re with the boy, Mike’s son?” said the individual in the clip below. “You a cold motherfucker, ain’t you! You’re cold as a motherfucker, homie.” While the pair appeared to laugh off the incident, Pippen has since offered a response of sorts.

“I just met him 3 years ago I never knew him or his family,” she wrote in the comments section of The Shade Room post. “I was 21 yrs old and in college when Scottie played that one year w MJ and we weren’t friends with them like everyone thinks.”

The heckler appeared to be calling them out because Marcus’ father played with Scottie Pippen—who Larsa finalized her divorce from in 2021—for years at the Chicago Bulls. While the two were responsible for helping the Bulls win multiple NBA titles, their relationship has soured over the years. As recently as earlier this year, Scottie trash talked his former teammate and suggested he should’ve been named Defensive Player of the Year at one point but everyone was “too busy watching Michael.”

Larsa has made it clear that she wasn’t friendly with Michael Jordan or his family during her marriage with Scottie, shutting down accusations that she knew Marcus since he was a child.

Marcus, 31, and Larsa, 48, have come under fire for the age gap between them. The recent comment is the first time either of them have publicly spoken about their relationship.

  • Auction: NBA legend Michael Jordan’s jersey sells for record breaking $10.1m

Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls wore the recognizable red and black vest for the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals.

The iconic jersey that Michael Jordan wore during the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals broke auction records when it sold for a record-breaking $10.1 million (£8.86 million).

The Chicago Bulls vest was well-known to be worn during the period of time known as “The Last Dance,” when Jordan won his sixth and final NBA championship.

It has become the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia in history – eclipsing the £7m paid for Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” shirt worn during the 1986 World Cup.

The red and black jersey, emblazoned with the number 23, is also the most valuable Michael Jordan item ever sold at auction.

It is also the highest-selling baseball jersey – meaning the former professional basketball ace has broken three new world records without setting foot on the court.

The Nike mesh vest was listed on New York auctioneer Sotheby’s website as being in “excellent condition, consistent with use”.

The winning bid was more than double the estimate of $3m (£2.6m) to $5m (£4.4m).

The jersey was accompanied by a photo matching the certificate of authenticity and a copy of Sports Illustrated published in June 1998, which showcases the jersey on the front cover.

The Sotheby’s website also shows a previous lot, a pair of Nike Air Jordan 9 “Player Sample” Baseball cleats which fetched more than $44,000 (£38,636) at auction yesterday.

The size 13.5 black and white boots were cut to Jordan’s specifications in 1994, months after he shocked the basketball community by announcing his retirement from the sport after three consecutive NBA Championships on 6 October 1993.

He threw fans a curve ball after revealing his intention to switch sports, embarking on a brief stint as a professional baseball player.

But the athlete returned to the NBA and Chicago Bulls in 1995 – just nine days after retiring from baseball.

In 1999, he bowed out of basketball for a second time, insisting he was “99.9% certain” he would not return.

But two years later in 2001, Jordan returned to the basketball court again, retiring for the third and final time in 2003.

Another pair of Nike Air Ship trainers, worn during Jordan’s fifth NBA game on 1 November 1984, sold for almost $1.5m (£1.3m) in October last year.

Head of Streetwear at Sotheby’s Brahm Wachter, said the sale “solidifies Michael Jordan as the undisputed GOAT, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was nearly 25 years ago.”

Jordan, now 59, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September 2009.

  • Michael Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’ jersey sold for $10.1m

Basketball icon, Michael Jordan, has had one of his jerseys, “Last Dance” sold for a record $10.1m (£8.8m).

This is the exact jersey he wore during the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals.

According to reports, this is the most a piece of sporting memorabilia has fetched in history.

Auction house Sotheby’s says the item drew “palpable excitement” from sports fans and collectors.

It was reminiscent of a sporting season – chronicled in Netflix documentary The Last Dance – which saw Jordan winning his sixth and final NBA title.

On Thursday, Sotheby’s said Jordan’s Chicago Bulls jersey attracted a total of 20 bids.

Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, Brahm Wachter, said bidders were “eager to own a rarefied piece of history”.

“Today’s record-breaking result… solidifies Michael Jordan as the undisputed G.O.A.T, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was nearly 25 years ago,” Wachter said. G.O.A.T is an acronym for “greatest of all time”.

The jersey outstripped a previous record of $9.28m, paid for a shirt worn by football star Diego Maradona at the 1986 World Cup.

It was auctioned with a June 1998 Sports Illustrated magazine, which features Jordan on the cover.

Jordan is seen by many as the best player in the history of basketball. He spent most of his career with the Chicago Bulls, became a global icon and helped raise the NBA’s profile around the world.

Although the Chicago Bulls lost the opening game of the NBA Finals against Utah Jazz, it won the next three games. Then Utah Jazz took the next game by two points.

In the sixth game, Jordan put the Bulls up 87-86 with just 5.2 seconds left on the clock, and secured his final NBA title.

The comeback was cheered by basketball fans around the world.

Jordan had abruptly retired from basketball in October 1993, following the murder of his father in North Carolina. The star had won seven scoring titles and led the Chicago Bulls to three straight championships.

“I have always stressed… that when I lose the sense of motivation and the sense to prove something as a basketball player, it’s time to leave,” Jordan said.

Jordan, who is now aged 59, hung up his boots for the final time in 2003.

  • Michael Jordan’s Last Dance reminds of Thierry Henry – Ex-Arsenal star

Like virtually every sports fan across America and the world, Carlos Vela developed a Sunday routine over the last five weeks.

For the first time since Game of Thrones went off the air in summer 2019, the U.S. was united by a true television phenomenon: The Last Dance. The documentary, a 10-part event broadcast over five weeks, followed Michael Jordan’s rise to his place as the most revered basketball player of all time while focusing on his final season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98.

With American sports suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Last Dance became a phenomenon. The series of episodes offered deep dives into one of the greatest athletes and one of the greatest teams of all time, filling everyone’s Sunday with larger-than-life stories about Jordan and his six NBA titles.

Vela, a massive basketball fan, was instantly hooked.

“Of course. Every Sunday I was there,” Vela told Goal. “My wife wasn’t happy. But I said, ‘these two hours, these are for me’.”

The Los Angeles FC star has long been a fan of the NBA. In the past, Vela has stated that he actually prefers basketball to soccer and, in his free time, he chooses to spend his moments away from his own sport by following the NBA.

Vela recently uploaded a video of him, in full Los Angeles Lakers gear, dunking on his own hoop while the Mexican international also expressed excitement at starring alongside James Harden in a new ad for sports drink BODYARMOR.

Over the last five weeks, Vela, like the rest of the country, was offered an insight into Jordan’s mindset as a leader, for better or worse. The series detailed the famous grudges and perceived slights that fueled his career. It discussed Jordan’s gambling, or as he calls it “competition”, problems.

Most poignantly, the series revealed Jordan’s leadership style, which often pushed teammates to their limit physically and mentally. At the end of the seventh episode, an emotional Jordan reflected on criticisms of how far he pushed those that played alongside him before tearfully calling for a break in the interview.

“When people see this they are going say, ‘Well he wasn’t really a nice guy. He may have been a tyrant.’ Well, that’s you. Because you never won anything,” Jordan said.

“I wanted to win, but I wanted them to win to be a part of that as well. Look, I don’t have to do this. I am only doing it because it is who I am. That’s how I played the game. That was my mentality. If you don’t want to play that way, don’t play that way.”

Throughout his career, Vela has played with a number of big players. And, having watched Jordan’s leadership style and his ability to push teammates further than they thought they could be pushed, the Mexican star says he was reminded of former Arsenal star Thierry Henry.

Henry and Vela never took the field together at Arsenal, as Vela was loaned out throughout his early years with the club due to a work permit issue. But the Mexican star says Henry’s leadership still stood out, giving him a Jordan-like presence.

“Thierry Henry was a really hard guy,” he said. “He tried every day to be the best and he pushed the young guys to work more, to be professional, to try to bring everything to every training.

“He would say, ‘if you train hard, you can play hard’. Thierry Henry was an inspiration to me and you can see the career he had. I’m proud to have said I can play with him. He’s a good leader.”

Vela’s personality, meanwhile, is a bit more laid back, but he’s still found plenty of success since making the move to MLS ahead of LAFC’s expansion season.

The winger smashed MLS records last season by scoring 34 goals in 31 matches, helping guide LAFC to a Supporters’ Shield and an MLS record for points in a season.

But, as he looks to add an MLS Cup to his resume, Vela says he learned a lot from watching Jordan’s rise to NBA immortality.

“I wasn’t surprised. You are not there to see it day by day, but when you see what Michael Jordan did, you feel something special, something different than the rest,” he said.

“I feel like I have a lot of things to learn from Michael Jordan to try and be the best. I take it as motivation. Maybe I have to be more hard, do more things to help my teammates to be better so we can win more championships.”

  • Michael Jordan: NBA legend’s trainers sell for record $560,000

Basketball legend Michael Jordan’s autographed trainers from 1985 sold for a record $560,000 (£463,000) in an online auction.

The Nike Air Jordan 1s, worn by Jordan during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, were expected to fetch between $100,00-$150,000 at Sotheby’s.

The previous record was $437,500 for a pair of Nike’s 1972 Moon Shoes.

Jordan wore mismatched trainers, with the left a size 13 and the right a size 13.5.

The Air Jordan 1s were sold by Jordan Geller, who founded the trainer museum Shoezeum in Las Vegas.

The sale coincided with a Netflix documentary – The Last Dance – with behind-the-scenes footage of the Bulls’ hunt for a sixth NBA title in the 1997-98 season.

  • Michael Jordan was offered $100 million to appear at an event for two hours, he said no

NBA superstar Michael Jordan may have retired years ago, but his off-court appeal remains as strong as ever.

The former Chicago Bulls star has largely stayed out of the limelight since he walked away from basketball nearly two decades ago. So much so, he once turned down a jaw-dropping amount of money for a two-hour appearance at an event, his former agent said this week.

David Falk appeared on WFAN’s “Boomer and Gio,” where he discussed how picky his famous client was when it came to projects.

“I brought him a deal three years ago for $100 million. All he had to do was, other than giving his name and likeness, make a one two-hour appearance to announce the deal and he turned it down,” Falk said Wednesday, without providing any additional details on the deal.

“God bless him. He’s been so successful, it gives him an opportunity to do whatever the hell he wants or not to do things he doesn’t want. I really admire that. He’s very, very selective in the things he wants to be involved in.”

Jordan made headlines last month after his documentary “The Last Dance” was released. The ESPN series premiered on April 19 and will air on Sunday nights over five weeks through May 17.

The 1990s Chicago Bulls, led by Jordan, remains one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. The ESPN series features never-before-seen footage from the 1997-98 season, along with interviews from a star-studded cast.

  • NBA legend Michael Jordan wins long-running China trademark dispute

China’s Supreme Court has ruled in favour of basketball legend Michael Jordan in a long-running trademark dispute, ending an eight-year legal battle with a Chinese sportswear firm that illegally used his name.

Upholding intellectual property rights is one of the core disputes of the US-China trade war, and a phase one deal signed in January saw Beijing pledge to improve protections of intellectual property.

The landmark ruling, made late last month, prohibits the Fujian-based Qiaodan Sports from using the Chinese translation of Jordan’s name, Qiao Dan.

The retired Chicago Bulls player and six-time NBA championship winner has a huge following in China, a country that has legions of avid basketball fans.

The Supreme Court decision overturns two previous verdicts in favour of the Chinese firm.

However, it still allows the firm to continue using its logo of a silhouetted basketball player — which has similarities with the “Jumpman” logo used by Nike to promote its “Air Jordan” line of sports shoes.

However the Supreme Court referred the case over the use of the logo for retrial by the State Intellectual Property Office.

In 2016, Jordan won the right to his name in Chinese characters, but the Supreme Court upheld the firm’s right to use its trademark “Qiaodan” in Romanised English.

Qiaodan Sports said in a Weibo statement Tuesday that the ruling “would not impact the normal use of [its] existing trademarks, nor would it affect normal business operations.”

Founded in 2000, the sportswear franchise operates more than 5,700 stores nationwide.

It has also applied for nearly 200 similarly named trademarks including different Chinese spellings of “Qiaodan”, “Flying Power” and “Qiaodan King”, according to the verdict.

In 2017, the sportswear brand New Balance was awarded $1.5 million in copyright damages by a Chinese court over its famous “N” logo, which was illegally copied by a local sports shoe firm.

The verdict — a rare victory for a Western brand in a Chinese intellectual property infringement case — was announced shortly after US President Donald Trump launched a sweeping investigation into China’s record on intellectual property.

The UN said this week that China became the world leader in international patent filings last year, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decades.
