Michael Blackson drags Finance Ministry to court over his locked-up Eurobond investment

Well-known American comedian and actor of Ghanaian heritage, Michael Blackson, has announced his intention to pursue legal action against the Ministry of Finance due to the mismanagement of his Eurobond investment.

He explained that he initially made the investment with the hopes of using the returns to support his school project.

However, due to the current situation, he is now seeking alternative funding sources for the school.

Since his investment has become inaccessible, Blackson has been vocal about his frustration on social media.

On October 14, 2024, he took to his platforms once more to express his discontent and inform his followers about the impending legal steps he plans to take.

He stated, “I’m seeking legal actions against the finance ministry of Ghana.

I have a free school I’m financing on my own, and they took away the potential earnings I was going to use to fund the school. Now I have to figure something else out for those poor kids.”

Previously, Blackson revealed that he acquired Eurobonds to fund his school, the Michael Blackson Academy, located in Agona Nsaba. However, he has encountered difficulties in recovering his investment.

He explained that his decision to invest in Eurobonds stemmed from the belief that it would provide financial support for the sustainability of the free school he established.

However, he said, “Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever and leave us hanging.”

Ghana’s reputation destroyed due to Michael Blackson’s rants – Sonnie Badu

Sonnie Badu has expressed concern that Michael Blackson’s recent social media comments about his investment challenges in Ghana have negatively impacted the country’s image.

The gospel musician and founder of Rockhill Chapel believes Blackson’s international influence makes his statements especially harmful to Ghana’s reputation, potentially deterring future investors.

Speaking to GHOne, Badu remarked that Blackson’s experience reflects a larger issue in Africa, where short-term gains often take precedence over long-term vision.

“You just read what Michael Blackson said happened to him. This guy is an International figure and everything he says carries a lot of weight. What he has done has damaged Ghana big time.

“This is what it’s going to do do, it is telling everybody don’t go and invest in Ghana. Again, this is Africa. It is not just happening in Ghana, it happening everywhere where people think about their pockets first before impact, where people don’t envision the future, they want it now. When you go to the white man’s land, they plan 50 years ahead even if they don’t benefit, they will rather their children come to benefit,” he said.

He pointed out that this mindset contrasts with the approach in more developed nations, where decisions are made with a view toward benefiting future generations.

Earlier, in a series of tweets, Blackson expressed frustration over the financial losses he incurred while investing in Ghana, particularly for a school he established to support talented but underprivileged students in his hometown.

My assistant in Ghana under threat over my Eurobond tweet – Michael Blackson

In a recent turn of events, Ghanaian-American comedian, Michael Blackson has revealed that his assistant’s life is now under threat, following his public outcry on social media over financial difficulties he attributes to government actions.

According to Blackson, his assistant, who resides in Ghana, has been receiving alarming threats in reaction to his earlier tweets.

“My assistant in Ghana called me yesterday and said he was getting threats because of my tweets,” parts of his tweets read.

Puzzled by the situation, Michael Blackson, questioned what wrongdoing he had committed, asking whether he didn’t have the right to voice his concerns after being robbed in the country.

“Let me get this straight, I decided to come home because of the love and passion I have for home but I get robbed and since I don’t have the power to fight back, I decided to tell the world my problem and now they threaten my people. Smh,” he added.

The Ghanaian-American actor also touched on his investments, sharing that after researching Ghana’s bond history, he initially believed they would be a secure option, but the outcome proved to be far worse than expected.

“I did my research on Ghana and bonds, in their history of existence there has never been an issue. So, I said to myself this interest can keep my school going. $10k a month will be good to pay teachers, cooks, cleaners, security, lunch, electricity, water, books, etc.

“I figured $1m would get me $10k, I got one payment and it stopped. It’s been 2 years, mind you they had my $1m and I had to find $10k each month. Now you know why I’m pissed,” he stated.

Michael Blackson criticised the Ghanaian government for using funds from Eurobond investments to pay off debts, leaving investors like him in a tough situation.

He explained that he invested in the Eurobonds, believing they would sustain the free school he built.

“Who’s the Minister of Finance in Ghana? I have issues with this guy. People from the diaspora chose to invest in our continent, and now our money is being used to pay off debt. We’re left with disappointing options: a 37% cut for 5% interest over 11 years, or no cut with just 1.9% interest over 15 years. I’m very disappointed in my people for this,” he expressed.

His remarks have sparked a flurry of responses on social media, particularly from celebrities and media figures.

Michael Blackson recently took to social media to express his frustration over financial troubles caused by the Ghanaian government, revealing that his assistant in Ghana is now facing threats due to his outspoken tweets.

In his update, Blackson shared that his assistant had informed him of receiving threats following the actor’s criticism of the financial situation in Ghana.

“My assistant in Ghana called me yesterday and said he was getting threats because of my tweets,” parts of his tweets read.

Blackson questioned whether he was wrong to speak out after being robbed and struggling to get his investment back.

“Let me get this straight, I decided to come home because of the love and passion I have for home but I get robbed and since I don’t have the power to fight back, I decided to tell the world my problem and now they threaten my people. Smh,” he added.

He explained that his decision to invest in Ghana’s bonds was based on thorough research, which indicated a stable history of bond performance.

He had invested $1 million with the expectation of receiving $10,000 monthly to support his free school project, but after receiving only one payment, the funds stopped.

Blackson has been covering the $10,000 monthly expenses out of pocket for the past two years, which has added to his frustration.

Blackson criticized the Ghanaian government for reallocating Eurobond funds to address national debt, which he believes undermined his investment.

He expressed disappointment with the current financial options for investors, which include significant cuts or extremely low interest rates over long periods.

His remarks have sparked widespread reactions across social media, including from celebrities and media figures.

Michael Blackson considering GoFundMe to fund school in Ghana after sour Eurobond investment

Following the failure of his $1 million Eurobond investment, American comedian Michael Blackson has revealed he might resort to launching a GoFundMe campaign to keep his free school, the Michael Blackson Academy, running.

Blackson invested in Eurobonds, hoping that the returns would cover the school’s operational costs. However, the Ghanaian government’s diversion of his funds to settle external debts has left him unable to sustain the school’s future financially.

In his posts on X, Blackson lamented, “Now that Ghana has taken the money I invested in my school, I’ll have to feed the kids Naija jollof. I had no plans on opening up a nonprofit because I hate asking for anything, but Ghana took the $1 million I invested to use to pay for the life of the school.”

The comedian’s sense of betrayal and frustration has led him to consider alternative means of funding his academy, which provides free education and uniforms to underprivileged children.

The Michael Blackson Academy is a free-for-all school founded by Michael Blackson in Ghana. The school aims to provide children from underprivileged backgrounds with access to quality education and leadership development.

The school provides a safe and modern learning environment for children, with state-of-the-art facilities such as classrooms, gyms, computer labs and more.

The academy also provides a range of extracurricular activities, including sports and music, to help children develop their talents and interests. The school is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through education and empowering children to reach their full potential.

What Ghanaian decision-makers told Michael Blackson after bad $1m Eurobond investment

American comedian Michael Blackson has revealed his disappointment with the responses he received from Ghanaian decision-makers after the government redirected his $1 million Eurobond investment.

In his posts on X, the comedian shared how he reached out to key figures in the country’s leadership, only to be met with apologies that did little to address the situation.

Blackson wrote, “I even hit up the big guys that make decisions in Ghana, and they told me they’re sorry. Sorry for taking hardworking people’s money and paying your debt to China?”

He further expressed his frustration with the lack of accountability, noting that “Ghana’s favorite word when they do you wrong is ‘I’m sorry.’”

Blackson made it clear that while he remains committed to his school, he feels deeply betrayed by the government’s handling of his investment, stating, “Ghana robbed me and a lot of other people that trusted them enough to invest in that country.”

The Republic of Ghana has initiated a significant Eurobond debt restructuring offer, aiming to alleviate its growing debt burden as the country grapples with severe economic challenges, including inflationary pressures, a depreciating currency, and mounting fiscal deficits.

The Exchange Offer and Consent Solicitation, announced by the Ministry of Finance on September 5, 2024, forms a crucial part of the government’s strategy to restore fiscal stability and reduce its unsustainable debt load.

The initiative is seen as a vital component of Ghana’s broader recovery plan, which is backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under a $3 billion Extended Credit Facility.

Michael Blackson recently voiced his frustration with the Ghanaian government over financial losses tied to his investments.

In a series of posts on X, the comedian shared that he had purchased Eurobonds to support a free school he built in Ghana.

However, he now faces significant challenges in reclaiming his investment, as the government used the funds to pay off debts.

Blackson expressed his disappointment, stating that investors from the diaspora, like himself, are being unfairly affected.

“Who’s the minister of finance in Ghana? I have beef with this guy. People from the diaspora chose to invest in our continent, and now our money is being used to pay debt, with two disappointing options: a 37% cut for 5% interest over 11 years, or no cut with just 1.9% interest over 15 years. I’m very disappointed in my people for this,” parts of his post read.

He criticized the financial management, highlighting the poor options for investors: either accept a 37% reduction with a 5% interest rate over 11 years or take no cut but receive only 1.9% interest over 15 years.

His remarks have ignited a conversation online, with several celebrities and media figures weighing in.

The general consensus among the public is one of disappointment, with many concerned that this mishandling of investments could discourage future investors from engaging with Ghana.

The issue has sparked debate on social media, calling into question the impact this could have on the country’s reputation.

In his posts on X, Blackson expressed his frustration, saying, “I’m taking Ghana to the world court; they won’t get away with this. Bonds only go bad if there’s some type of civil war. You don’t take your customers’ money and pay your debt with it.”

Michael Blackson, the American comedian of Ghanaian descent, has revealed how his $1 million Eurobond investment intended to fund the Michael Blackson Academy was “sabotaged” by the Ghanaian government.

Blackson shared in a series of posts on X that he had purchased the Eurobonds to ensure the longevity of his free school in Agona Nsaba, but the government allegedly diverted his investment to pay off debts to foreign creditors, including China.

Blackson wrote, “I did the Eurobonds because I figured that will help pay for the lifespan of the free school I built. Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever and leave us hanging.”

Despite initial promises of a 10% return on his investment, Blackson claims he was left with two unsatisfactory options: either accept a 37% cut with a reduced 5% interest over 11 years or maintain the principal amount with a mere 1.95% interest and a 15-year wait.

Michael Blackson has threatened to take the Ghanaian government to the World Court.

In June 2024, Ghana reached an agreement in principle with private creditors to restructure about $13 billion of debt, a key milestone in the West African country’s efforts to overhaul its loans. The nation’s bonds rallied.

Under terms of an accord announced on Monday, investors accepted nominal losses of 37% on their holdings, according to a statement issued by the advisers to an international creditor committee and the government.. Bondholders will forego $4.7 billion of their claims, while providing cash flow relief of about $4.4 billion during an International Monetary Fund loan program, it said.

American comedian and actor of Ghanaian descent, Michael Blackson, has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the Ghanaian government, specifically targeting the Finance Minister.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Blackson shared his frustration over difficulties in recovering funds he had invested in Eurobonds, which were intended to support the Michael Blackson Academy, a free school he established in Agona Nsaba.

Blackson explained that he invested in Eurobonds with the aim of using the returns to fund the long-term operation of his school. The Michael Blackson Academy, which was founded three years ago, provides free education to children from kindergarten to Basic 3, along with free uniforms. Despite the financial challenges, Blackson remains committed to his school and the children it serves.

  • Many affluent men in Ghana don’t know how to give – Michael Blackson

Many affluent men in Ghana don’t know how to give – Michael Blackson

Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson recently addressed a significant issue he believes contributes to his home country’s challenges, selfishness.

During a conversation with Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), Blackson shared his perspective, noting, “We have a reputation for being selfish, which is often a factor in the difficulties we face because we struggle with generosity… Many affluent individuals here only prioritize themselves.”

He pointed out the contrast between tax practices in the United States, where high-income earners contribute a substantial portion of their earnings, and Ghana, where the wealthy are not taxed as heavily.

“In the U.S., if you earn a million dollars annually, a significant chunk of that goes to taxes. But here, there’s less of that burden; wealthy individuals aren’t contributing as much,” Blackson remarked.

He emphasised that this presents an opportunity for the affluent to recognize their social obligations and give back to their communities.

“What are you doing for your people? It’s time to wake up and find ways to contribute,” he urged, highlighting the importance of philanthropy.

Blackson’s comments coincided with discussions about his ‘Michael Blackson Academy,’ an initiative offering free education to children in Ghana’s Central Region.

He expressed hope that such endeavours would inspire more wealthy individuals to support the less privileged in their country.

“I hope to open their eyes and encourage a shift in mindset, making everyone more compassionate,” he concluded.

  • I regret investing in Ghana’s Eurobond – Michael Blackson

Comedian Michael Blackson, in an interview with comedian Kwaku Sintim-Misa, shared the story of his investment misfortune, detailing how funds meant for his school were lost after investing in Ghana’s Eurobonds.

Blackson, known for his humour, had ambitious plans to secure his school’s future by investing in high-interest Ghanaian bonds.

He spoke of his intentions to ensure the school’s longevity, considering a time when he might step away from comedy.

“When I built the school, I tried to have a lifetime plan for the school. Because, let’s say, five years from now, I don’t want to tell jokes anymore. Then what will happen to the school?

“How can I make sure this thing lasts forever? So what I did was… that the difference between Ghana and America is that Ghana will give you a higher interest rate on your money.

“Because the Ghana bonds will give you a very high percentage. So I said to myself, ‘I’m going to invest money in my country and use that interest to manage the school forever’,” he said.

Despite warnings from his American bankers about the risks of investing in a developing country, Blackson remained confident in Ghana’s stability.

He disregarded concerns about potential losses and moved forward with the investment.

“I remember when I was sending the money little by little, my bankers in America were like, ‘Mike, this is a third world country. Are you sure you want to send your money?’

“I told them not to talk crap about my country. Because I know for a fact the only way a bond could go bad was through a civil war.

“And Ghana can’t have a civil war. We are too peaceful. We’re too loving. We’re not going to hurt each other. Nothing will happen. So I said, there’s no way my money could go wrong. And guess what? I was wrong.

“I did a Eurobonds thing and now… nothing,” he said.

Unfortunately, the Eurobond haircut blindsided Blackson, leaving him without the expected returns.

Despite this setback, he’s determined to keep the school running, turning to nonprofits and planning fundraising events in the United States as part of his efforts.

    What happened to the EuroBonds

In 2023, Ghana undertook a debt restructuring initiative, which included a reduction in the principal amount of its Eurobonds, aiming to alleviate $20 billion in external debt.

The government sought a 30 to 40 percent cut in principal and forgiveness of interest payments. Following the announcement, the value of Ghana’s sovereign dollar bonds fell sharply.

This restructuring aligned with IMF conditions to assist Ghana with its Balance of Payments, requiring $15 billion over three years.

Without effective debt management, Ghana risked financial strain on its reserves and currency.

The Eurobond haircut was part of Ghana’s strategy for economic relief, despite facing potential creditor resistance.

I was so close to marrying my housekeeper because of Ghana Jollof-Michael Blackson

Comedian and actor Michael Blackson, who is Ghanaian-American, has revealed that he is drawn to women who can cook.

In a recent interview, Mr. Blackson announced in a playful yet somewhat serious way, that any prospective life partner must be able to cook Ghana Jollof.

Speaking with Doreen Avio during his school’s first-anniversary festivities in Agona Nsaba, Central Region, Michael Blackson said a genuine Ghana Jollof is an essential requirement to win him over.

“Jollof test, you have to cook jollof and I have to taste it and it has to be great. I hang out with a lot of Nigerians, Sierra Leoneans, and even Chinese with fried rice. If my wife cannot represent my country with the perfect Ghana jollof, I can’t marry you,” Michael Blackson stated.

Blackson said he came very close to marrying his housekeeper because she made one of the best Jollof dishes, but it’s unclear if this culinary requirement is a must in his quest for love.

“I’m so close to marrying my housekeeper. She cooked some jollof the other day. It is part of the best jollof I have had in a very long time.”

A favourite cuisine of many Africans, jollof rice is a one-pot meal made with rice, tomatoes, onions, and a variety of spices.

In the 2010s, a friendly rivalry known as the “Jollof wars” arose between West African nations, particularly Nigeria and Ghana, over whose version is superior due to regional variances.

Till date, a winner has still not been declared as both countries are not ready to give up the ‘fight.’

Give me free drinks when I visit your club -Michael Blackson to club owners in Ghana

Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson has urged club owners in Ghana to provide him with free drinks when he visits.

In support of a free school in his hometown of Agona Nsabaa, he mentioned that he donates money to education.

In a tweet on Thursday, July 13, Blackson wrote, “If I’m in Ghana and I walk in your club be prepared to comp me a section with as much bottles as I want, I don’t spend my Money on alcohol I spend it on teachers so they can teach your kids Modasuckas. Get that bill out of here or imma start teaching the kids at my school myself.”

The comedian was referencing the Michael Blackson Academy, a free school he funded and opened in Agona Nsaba, in Ghana’s Central region.

The three-story school complex features classrooms, laboratories and other facilities to support quality education.

Blackson cut the sod for construction of the school in early 2020.

In December 2022, he announced on Twitter that the school was ready and the commissioning date.

The school began admitting its first students this year.

Blackson, 49, now wants recognition from club owners for his philanthropic efforts.

He argues that while he enjoys drinking at clubs, he spends his money supporting the school, not on alcohol.

Ghana is a safe place – Michael Blackson to Americans

Ghanaian American actor, Michael Blackson, has emphasized the extent of peace and safety Ghana is blessed with.

In a discussion on Drink Champs with Nore, Blackson established that the peace, safety, and freedom experienced in Ghana is totally out of the world.

He made these statements while stating possible reasons that prompted Meek Mill’s act of shooting a music video inside the Jubilee House earlier this year.

Michael Blackson said Meek Mill, perhaps ‘overdosed’ on the warmth, freedom, peace, and safety in the country.

“He probably felt at home. He felt he was home and that he could probably do whatever he wanted.
Trust me, In Ghana, let me tell you something. You go out, you go to the club and come back home at night time. In America, you might not make it home at night time. Ghana is peaceful, nothing happens to you. You go out and you make it home at night. There is no violence, nobody gets killed. There’s no shoot out. Nothing!” he told the host.

Michael Blackson, who was made to give an account of what transpired at the Jubilee House when Meek Mill visited told his friends,

“In Africa, our White Houses are a little bit more different. I think he shot a music video in the Jubilee House. I wasn’t there but I think what happened was he went in there and took some pictures and videos and later on used it for a music video. I don’t know how it happened but Ghana is a very strict country. There are certain things you’re not allowed to capture in their White House.”

  • $10,000 to clear three boxes of clothes i shipped makes no sense -Michael Blankson

Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson has lamented the high rate of customs duties in Ghana.

In a tweet, he revealed that he had shipped things from the United States of America to Ghana in order to help his cousins who don’t have jobs.

Michael claims that the clothes he bought were worth $10,000, but customs asked him to pay another $10,000 for clearance fees or the items would be auctioned off.

“I have cousins in Ghana with no jobs and no income. Because the country lacked jobs, they wanted to open a store if I could help.

“I purchased about $10k of items and when they arrived thru DHL, customs said they will need to pay $10k to retrieve them. IT MAKES NO SENSE @GhanaRevenue,” he fumed.

While lamenting his ordeal, he advised people abroad to be prepared to spend so much on shipping to Ghana.

“If you are planning on shipping anything to Ghana, be prepared to pay a duty fee as high as the thing you shipped and if you don’t pick them up in a timely fashion they will auction your belongings. Why @GhanaRevenue?

Under the Hollywood star’s post, a user said, “I’m sure is the kind of items you are bringing to the country. You could have bought it here to promote local business instead of shipping $10k worth of items here. Pay $10k to retrieve so we can use it to support local businesses.”

Another added, “100% tax is extremely high. No matter how we try to justify the tax, it will only encourage more tax evasion and avoidance.”

“Well that is how they do in Ghana and is all nonsense because one will receive an old phone from the US and they will still charge almost the amount at the post office here,” a third added.

  • School built by  Michael Blackson opens in January

The school Michael Blackson built for his hometown in Ghana is scheduled to open its doors to students in January. In a Twitter post on Wednesday, the 49-year-old comedian and actor also announced that admission is free for everyone.

“My village is so excited about their new school I built,” Blackson shared alongside a video of the edifice. “Opens January and it’s free for them all.”

As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Blackson cut sod for the school project after he returned home in 2020. Taking to his Instagram, the Meet the Blacks actor shared a video of the supposed site currently under construction.

“Only thing that matters to me are the kids,” he captioned at the time. “Education can help them understand everything so I’m building them a school in my village. By the grace of God they will be in class next year.”

In the video, Blackson was surrounded by some excited kids and was also in the company of Ghanaian Afrobeats star Fuse ODG, assuring them the educational facility would be completed soon.

Blackson’s initiative follows a similar gesture by Lil Jon. The award-winning rapper and producer has so far built two schools in the West African nation.

“I’m all about helping children,” he told CNN in 2019. “Children are our future and every child deserves to have an environment where they can learn and flourish and gain knowledge.”

According to the musician, he was inspired to provide support when he visited the West African nation in 2017.

“When I saw the conditions where these children were trying to learn, one community they had a big mango tree and two classes were sitting under the mango tree and that’s not a condition conducive with learning,” he said. “Kids are going to get distracted, plus it’s extremely hot. It compelled me to want to do more.”

He added that being a father was also a contributing factor. “Children shouldn’t have to suffer for any reason,” he told CNN. “One of these kids could grow up to be a scientist, a lawyer, an astronaut, the president of their country. I could create an environment where all these things could happen.”
