Actress and socialite, Fella Makafui has opened up about her struggle with suicidal thoughts triggered by false news and online harassment in 2019.
In a candid interview on Hitz FM dated April 29, Fella Makafui, a mother of one, revealed how she was on the brink of taking her own life due to the emotional toll of a fabricated news story circulating on social media.
Recalling the distressing incident from 2019, Fella Makafui recounted receiving a call from her manager, alerting her to the damaging rumors.
“In 2019, there was some false news that circulated. That was where I had it.
“I was having a meeting with my manager, and he just called me. He’s like, ‘Precious, I know you wouldn’t do this, but this is what is going on. Could you tell me if it’s true?’ I said, ‘Richie, there’s no way I’ll ever do something like that,”
“It broke me. I almost took my life,” she said.
The traumatic experience compelled her to withdraw from publicly addressing or defending herself against such baseless allegations.
Instead, she opted to prioritize her mental well-being and focus on meaningful real-life connections rather than engaging with negativity online.
“I don’t come publicly to explain myself, defend myself or clear the air about certain news again. It’s because, at a point in my life, I just had it due to the trolling and all of that.
“Right now, you can say what you want about me. It’s okay. You don’t know me. It’s just social media. This is real life.
“The few good people around me know who I am. So I don’t think I have to say so much or do so much to prove a point because I almost took my life,” she said.
Her harrowing revelation coincides with a growing awareness of mental health challenges faced by public figures in the entertainment industry.
Various personalities, including Kuami Eugene, Wendy Shay, Kidi, and Mzvee, have spoken out about the pressures of fame and the detrimental effects of social media scrutiny on their mental well-being.
In a related development, comedian Funny Face recently made headlines after being involved in an accident in Kasoa, Central Region.
While thankfully no fatalities occurred, the incident underscored ongoing concerns about Funny Face’s mental health struggles.
He was subsequently remanded for two weeks and later granted GH¢120,000 bail by a Kasoa Circuit Court, marking yet another chapter in his tumultuous journey toward mental wellness.
